To reduce operator exposure to noise from vibrating screens at coal preparation plants. Background Hearing loss is one of the most common occupational illnesses in the United States. In the U.S. mining industry, hearing loss is 2.5 to 3 times greater than what is expected for the average population that is not exposed to occupational noise. Furthermore, studies by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) showed that by age 50, 90% of coal miners have a hearing impairment versus only 10% of the population that is not exposed to occupational noise. A NIOSH cross-sectional survey of coal preparation plants showed that 43.5% of employees were overexposed to noise. The study also found that vibrating screens were one of the top five loudest types of equipment at these plants?as well as the most numerous?making them a key noise source to address.

Silica films hare been rleposited 011 silicon substmtes at 400° to 600°C by a chemical-transport technique using hydrogen fluoride as the transport agent ill a closed system. This transport takes place from a source materia1 1071: temperature to substrates at higher temperatures, as indicated by the thermochemistry of the transport reaction. The experimental variables of- the transport process, such as the substrate temperature, the pressure pi the transport agent, and so forth, have been studied. The rate -determining step of the transport process appears to he the ),ale of chemical reaction in the source region. The transported films are similar to thermally grown silica films in physical proper-ties with the exception of 'some what higher dissolrrtion rates. SILICA films deposited on suitable substrates serve many purposes in electronic devices. They are used for the fabrication of tunneling devices, the surface passivation of devices, and the shielding of devices from nuclear radiation: and as selective masks against the diffusion of specific impurities into semiconductors. Doped silica films can also be used as sources for the diffusion of impurities into semiconductors. Several oxidation and deposition techniques for the preparation of silica films have been developed to meet the requirements of these applications. The therma1 oxidation of silicon by oxygen or steam at temperatures above 900 C is commonly used in silicon technology. The deposition techniques are perhaps more advantageous since they usually require lower temperatures and are not limited to silicon substrates. Silica films have been deposited on silicon and other substrates by reactive sputtering and chemical reactions. The sputtering of silicon in an oxygen atmosphere is capable of depositing good-quality silica films on silicon' and gallium arenide. Many chemical reactions are known to yield silica at room temperature or higher. These reactions may involve intermediate steps. However, the final step yielding silica should take place predominately on the substrate surface in order to produce adherent films. When silica is formed in the gas phase by volume reactions, no adherent deposit can be obtained. Generally, the experimental conditions of a reaction can be varied so that the surface reaction predominates over the volume reaction. The chemical reactions which have been used successfully for the deposition of silica films are briefly as follows. The pyrolysis of alkoxysilanes in an inert atmosphere or under reduced pressure has been employed to deposit silica films on germanium3 and silicon4 at 650" to 750°C in a flow system. The deposition of silica films from alkoxysilanes has also been achieved at nearly room temperature by a low-pressure plasma. Device quality silica films have been deposited on germanium and gallium arsenide by the deposition of an amorphous thin silicon film followed by oxidation at 600" to 700" . Silica films for high-temperature capacitors have been produced by the hydrolysis of silicon tetrabromide at 950°C in argon and hydrogen atmospheres.7 We have developed a chemical-transport technique for the deposition of silica films on semiconductor substrates at relatively low temperatures. The thermochemistry of the transport reaction, the experimental variables of the transport process, and the properties of the transported silica films are described in this paper. THERMOCHEMICAL CONSDERATIONS The transport of solid substances by chemical reactions in the presence of a temperature gradient has been used for the preparation of films and crystals of many electronic materials. In this technique, a gaseous reagent is chosen so that it reacts reversibly with the solid substance under consideration to form volatile products. Since the equilibrium constants of most reactions are temperature-dependent, the transport of these products to regions of suitable temperature in the reaction system would cause the reverse reaction to take place. depositing the original solid. When the equilibrium is shifted toward the formation of the solid as the temperature is decreased, the solid is transported from a high-temperature zone to a lower-temperature region, and vice versa. This chemical-transport technique can be carried out in a closed or gas-flow system. In a closed system, chemical equilibrium is presumably established in the different temperature regions of the system, and the transport agent regenerated in the deposition region repeats the transport process in a cyclic manner. The local chemical equilibrium may not be approached in a flow system: however, this system offers a greater degree of flexibility. Silica reacts reversibly with hydrogen fluoride and this reaction was chosen for the transport process. The over-all reaction between silica and hydrogen fluoride may be written as: SiO2(s) + 4HF(g-) = SiF4Ur) + 2H2O(^)

The Peñasquito deposit in Mexico is one of the largest grassroots precious metal discoveries to be developed in recent years. Goldcorp Inc. acquired the gold-silver-lead-zinc property with the acquisition of Glamis in 2006. The company has since committed US$1.5 billion to construct the mine, mill and associated facilities. The first of two 50-kt/d (55,000-stpd) mill and flotation lines is currently being commissioned while engineering and construction continues on the second line. A high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) will ultimately take total throughput to 130 kt/d (142,000 stpd). The Peñasquito property is located in the northeast corner of Zacatecas state, Mexico. The elevation of the property averages 1,900 m (6,200 ft) above sea level and it is situated in a wide east-west valley. Except for one small outcrop (Peñasquito), the area is covered by up to 30 m (98 ft) of alluvium.

Four massive pillar collapses in limestone mines, and one in a marble mine, occurred between 2011 and 2021 in benched areas at the Appalachian physiographic province. We characterized the rock mass at 43 limestone mines using the Geological Strength Index and, by plotting the results on a physiographic relief map, determined that GSI values between 55 and 70 preferentially occur in the Appalachian and Ouachita Mountains, which were subject to deformation during the Ouachita and Alleghanian Orogenies. Limestone mines located in formations of similar age in the Interior Plains, where deformation was less developed, are characterized by Geological Strength Index values over 80. We present the results of pillar strength calculations that incorporate the Geological Strength Index from mines that experienced massive collapse, as well as from mines with benched areas that did not collapse, to demonstrate the negative effect that a jointed rock mass has on pillar stability. We suggest that pillar designs, particularly those in which benching will be incorporated, should include allowance for rock mass quality. Because of the preferential dominance of lower GSI values in the Appalachians, we further suggest that pillar designs in this environment may require additional engineering assessment, especially where benching is intended. Lower GSI values may often translate into greater overbreak, which results in loss of pillar volume, corresponding wider back spans, and a decreased width-to-height ratio.

"The ancestral Ringarooma River in northeast Tasmania has transported alluvial tin and other heavy minerals from their onshore source of stanniferous Devonian granites downstream into what is now Ringarooma Bay. Previous exploration work has demonstrated the presence of potentially economic tin mineralisation within the palaeochannels and terraces associated with the submerged river.The offshore tin resource lies directly on the seabed or with less than 2 m of overburden, and within 5 - 50 m water depths in the wider bay area. The main river channel continues offshore for at least 13 km, with high tin grades found within the palaeochannel but also dispersed across the sea floor as a sheet wash, a result of Quaternary sea level change reworking the placer deposits. This drowned portion of the coastal plain contains a continuation of rich tin leads as low gradient anastomosing channels, and has been delineated by marine seismic and drilling activity since the 1960s. Tin grades in the Tertiary and Quaternary alluvial profiles vary from 50 - 300 g/m3, with the highest concentrations in the coarser basal horizons. A previous offshore explorer estimated a resource of 194 Mm3 at 150 - 250 g/m3.Kenex Ltd created 3D models of the paleochannels and the mineralisation with the aim of better constraining the resource estimate and identifying additional depositional areas. The modelling was undertaken with the input of geophysical data, bathymetry and geochemical sampling of the seabed surface and from historic offshore drill holes. A prospectivity model covering Ringarooma Bay was produced to target tin-bearing gravels. Predictive maps were created to represent various features of the offshore mineral system, including assessing gradient changes in palaeochannels and their sinuosity. The model identifies areas with higher potential for alluvial tin mineralisation and will be used to focus the exploration programme over tenements currently held by Kenex Ltd."

Grain boundary dij]usion coefficienls were measured in tungsten between 1400° and 2200° C and can be expressed by the equation sq cm per sec This activation energy confirms some eavlier estimates made .from tungsten sintering experiments. Grain boundary diffusion was found to occur in sub-bozrndavies having -misorientations of less than 10 deg. The actiuation energy for this subboundavy diffusion is equal to that for dijjusion in incoherent grain boundaries with in the limits of error. This is shown to be consistent with the dislocation model of Low-angle boundaries wheve diffusion occlcvs along- the dislocation 'YPipes" comprising -tile boundary. RECENT investigations of the sintering of tungsten powders all report activation energies which are considerably less than the activation energy for tungsten volume diffusion. Kothari' reports a value of 100 * 5 kcal per mole, Hayden and Brophy' obtained 90 kcal per mole, and Vasilos and smith3 found 110.7 kcal per mole from their sintering studies. Since most determinations of the activation energy for volume diffu-sion4-' fall between 120 and 160 kcal per mole (the true value seems most likely to be nearer 150 kcal per mole), the conclusion is drawn that the mass transport leading to densification during sintering is accomplished by grain boundary diffusion. This interpretation is consistent with various diffusion models of the sintering process. 10-12 Vasilos and Smith calculate diffusion coefficients from their data which fit the equation D * 1.36 x 10* exp(-llO,700/HD However, no direct measurements of tungsten grain boundary diffusion have been made. Furthermore, considerable disagreement exists between the directly measured values of tungsten volume diffusion.'-' In order to corroborate the inferred results of the sintering experiments concerning grain boundary diffusion and to provide accurate diffusion data essential to the analysis of the kinetics of creep, oxidation, precipitation, and so forth, the present work was undertaken to measure self-diffusion in single-crystal and polycrystalline tungsten between 1400" and 2200°C. It is within this temperature range that tungsten sintering is done, the re crystallization of tungsten occurs, and the widest application of tungsten as a high-temperature material will probably be made. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Radioactive WlE5 was produced by irradiating tungstic acid in a neutron flux of 1.2 x 1012 neutrons per sq cm per sec for 36 hr. A 2-week waiting period was allowed for the decay of w"~ also produced by the irradiation. (w"~ has a half-life of 24 hr.) The half-life of the remaining isotope was determined to be 75 days confirming the presence of w lE5 and the absence of any undesired radionuclide. Specimens 4 in. in diam and $ in. thick were cut from polycrystalline swaged tungsten rods (recrystal-lized) and from Linde single-crystal rods. Chemical analyses of these materials appear in Table I. Actually upon closer examination, the single-crystal specimens were found to consist of several subgrains separated primarily by tilt boundaries in which the misor-ientation ranged from 3 to 10 deg. Thus, it was possible to measure boundary diffusion coefficients in these low-angle subboundaries as well as in the incoherent boundaries of the polycrystalline specimens. The two faces of each specimen were ground flat and parallel within 0.0001 in. The radioactive tungstic acid was dissolved in concentrated ammonium hydroxide, placed on the ground flat of the specimen, and evaporated to dryness. The oxide was then reduced in hydrogen at 1000°C resulting in a layer of wlE5 approximately 1 p thick. The diffusion anneals were performed in vacuum in a tantalum resistance furnace. Time at temperature ranged from 10 hr at 1400°C to 2 hr at 2200°C. The penetration profile was determined by measuring the residual activity after successive removal of surface layers by grinding on metallographic polishing paper. Extreme care was exercised to insure that sections were always taken normal to the diffusion direction; this was verified repeatedly by checking that front and back surfaces of the specimen remained parallel. L’objectif de cet article est d’analyser l’efficacité de la conception des bancs miniers de la fosse Tiriganiaq du projet minier Meliadine par rapport à des critères de fiabilité rencontrés dans la littérature et la pratique. L’article présente les similitudes et les différences entre les résultats obtenus pour les différents critères et propose une approche multicritère systématique pour évaluer la fiabilité des bancs miniers à l’aide de cartes de susceptibilité.

Heat treatment of ore prior to comminution reduces power requirements for grinding, reduces grinding media wear, and improves recovery of iron values from a typical Minnesota magnetic taconite. Test data demonstrating this, as well as an analysis of the economics of commercial application of the technique, are presented. THE taconites in general are hard, tough ores, difficult to grind. Liberation of iron mineral constituents usually is accomplished by grinding the ore through at least 100 mesh, and often it has been found necessary to grind substantially through 325 mesh to achieve satisfactory recovery and grade in the concentration process. Because of the fineness of grind required and the enormous tonnages of material contemplated for treatment in the future, costs resulting from grinding media wear and power consumption, together with capital investment required for comminution, approach astronomical figures. Economy in any one of these elements per ton of material ground could very well reflect a considerable saving to the ferrous industry in yearly costs. With this in mind, the Research Laboratories of Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. have launched a program to discover means of effecting this economy. The initial phase of the work as described here deals with a heat treatment of crushed raw ore, followed by thermal shock in cooling, for the preparation of rod mill feed. Several investigators1-" ave noted an improvement in the grindabilities of ores treated in this manner. One investigator2 subjected low grade iron ores to heat treatment in an electric furnace. Basing his conclusions on screen analyses of crushed products, he observed that treated ore was more easily crushed than the untreated. He reported that observation of the treated and untreated ore through a microscope revealed cracks following the grain boundaries in treated ore, whereas no cracks were present in untreated ore. However, few if any have quantified the improvement in terms of total hp hours saved, reduction of wear of grinding media, or reduction of capital costs of grinding equipment involved. By means of Bond rod mill and ball mill grindabilitiesh nd by comparative wear tests, the conditions maintained during this investigation have been definitely evaluated. Heat treatment experiments have been made on a batch scale in a muffle furnace, followed by continuous scale experiments in a rotary kiln under various conditions of temperature, atmosphere, retention time, and quenching to determine the combination that would give the greatest improvement in the grindability of a taconite without affecting adversely the magnetic susceptibility of the magnetite. From these data, relative costs have been calculated for grinding both untreated and heat- treated ore on a basis of plant capacity of 120 tons per hour. Heat requirements for a rotary kiln, as well as the kiln capacity required for the treatment, have been estimated. For these tests 50 tons of ore were obtained from the Aurora mine of the Erie Mining Co., Hibbing, Minn. The ore was reported7 to have been selected from the magnetic portion of the lower chert horizons. An average chemical analysis of' this portion is shown in Table I and an approximate mineralogi-cal analysis is shown in Table 11. No attempt was made to differentiate between the various silicates because the compositions vary widely on the different horizons and depend on the degree of oxidation. Minnesotite, however, is the predominant silicate. The siderite grains were dispersed throughout the ore but were essentially associated with the rock-forming minerals. Exploration and mining title administration in the Northern Territory has changed dramatically over the last 20 years. These changes have occurred due to legislative amendments, technological developments, and the changing face of the mining industry. The first legislation to control mining in the Northern Territory was the Northern Territory Gold Mining Act (1873) of South Australia. In 1911, control of the Northern Territory was passed from South Australia to the Commonwealth. As a result of the mining boom which followed the discovery of gold in Tennant Creek in 1932, the Commonwealth passed the Mining Ordinance of 1939. This legislation was amended 39 times and stayed in force until July 1982, when the self-governing Northern Territory passed the Mining Act 1980. This Act is still in force and is continuously under review. The first computerised mining titles system, REGIS, was created in 1984/85 and was, to all intents and purposes, just a computerised index. Various modifications ensued, and in 1989 the Titles Database was unveiled. The database has developed to be one of the most sophisticated yet user-friendly mining titles databases in Australia. In excess of 50 companies have access to the database from their own offices. Work continues on its development and fine-tuning. The paper outlines the development of the database since inception.

Mineral exploration and development can have a significant impact on the environment and local communities, in some circumstances extending well beyond the mine site. Poor environmental performance and consequent social impacts by some companies have affected the reputation of the whole industry to the extent that the principal public concern about mining is its impact on the environment. This is consistent with public attitudes about other major natural resource sectors such as forestry and commercial fishing. Traditionally the community has relied on governments to set the benchmark for acceptable environmental and social performance through establishing and revising regulations governing the mining industry. This however assumes that regulations keep pace with community expectations. It also does not take into account those circumstances where governments can have conflicting roles as both watchdog and project partner. Government regulations and industry self-regulation are not in of themselves sufficient for the minerals sector to demonstrate that it has adequately addressed environmental and social issues associated with the sector. For the minerals sector to improve its reputation it must first improve its environmental and social performance. To do this requires the sector to operate to acceptable standards of environmental and social performance and for the sector to be able to credibly communicate this to its stakeholders such as investors, non-government organisations (NGOs), customers, staff, regulators and local communities. Independent third party certification of environmental and social performance (æcertificationÆ), already operational in forest and fisheries management, is proposed as a mechanism to enable the minerals sector to achieve this. World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and industry partners will be collaborating in a project to ascertain the applicability of æcertificationÆ to the minerals sector. A number of economic, social and environmental benefits are identified that could accrue should mining companies be able to differentiate themselves on the basis of environmental and social performance, an attribute evident in æcertificationÆ schemes. External audiences are seeking increasing levels of information and data on environmental and social performance of mining companies, be it local communities, investors, financial institutions or NGOs. Environmental and social reporting should be a key communications device that stakeholders can rely on as a reliable, credible source of information on environmental and social performance. WWFÆs contribution to the debate about environmental and social reporting has been to develop a process to assess the quality of environmental and social reports against reporting ingredients which WWF believe are important if a report is to be an accurate reflection of the reporting entitiesÆ environmental and social performance.

"After several successful projects on the Garden State Parkway and New Jersey Turnpike for support of single-stage MSE (Mechanically Stabilized Earth) walls using rigid inclusions (Controlled Modulus Columns) as an alternate to two-stage MSE walls and surcharge, the Bass River Bridge Widening project presented additional challenges in terms of soil conditions and height of embankment that created opportunities for the design-build ground improvement contractor and its MSE wall-designing partner to enhance their design and construction methods. The specialist contractor decided, in association with the wall system supplier, to perform an independent large scale instrumented test area on the project to demonstrate the ability of the design techniques to model the behavior of the system, as well as the capacity of the rigid inclusions to provide the necessary bearing capacity and settlement control to allow the construction of the highway without any consolidation period. This paper presents a detailed description of the design of the ground improvement system and MSE wall system, as well as the results and conclusions of the monitoring data gathered on the large scale test program. The combination of rigid inclusion ground improvement technologies, such as the CMC system, together with an MSE wall system allows for the rapid and economical construction of high embankment without waiting for a surcharge and consolidation period or the necessity to use a two-stage wall system. In-depth understanding of the design techniques and advantages of this combination will be provided and should be beneficial for any geotechnical engineer or owner looking for innovative solutions to save both time and cost on their projects.1. IntroductionAs development continues on sites with poor ground conditions throughout the world, conventional MSE walls remain a flexible design solution; however, construction of MSE walls in combination with ground improvement is becoming more frequent where extreme differential and/or total settlement prevail due to soft ground conditions. Various techniques have been used in the past in such conditions (e.g. conventional surcharge, staged construction, or two-stage MSE walls), even though these design solutions have typically involved longer waiting times for settlement to occur. As a result, conventional MSE wall design has been combined with a variety of ground improvement techniques consisting of rigid inclusions for an economical and efficient solution with the potential to accelerate construction and limit long term settlement. For the particular subject of this paper, the specialist contractor (Menard) proposed to use CMCs (Controlled Modulus Columns) to support the highest part of the MSE wall. CMCs are grouted displacement rigid inclusions installed in a grid-like pattern using a displacement auger. Before the CMCs are installed, a working platform may first need to be placed to allow equipment to move around the site depending on the ground conditions. Following the CMC ground improvement, an LTP (Load Transfer Platform) is installed prior to the construction of the MSE wall."

"Tunnels and galleries are the most important structures in coal mines. They are used for variety of purposes, such as transporting ore and people and for ventilation. A well-designed support system is necessary to stabilize structures and prevent collapse.Using rock bolts increases the strength of the rock in which tunnels are made. Rock bolts are used extensively in most underground mines today, and coal mines are no exception. Almost all galleries in a typical coal mine use some type of rock bolt, at least, as a means of partial or supplementary support.In this research, changing the support system from expensive methods to the use of rock bolts as the primary means of support is discussed, with the focus on a particular gallery in Hejdak coal mine. Visionary design methods, in conjunction with rock mass classification schedules, were used to determine an optimal rock bolt pattern. For this purpose, rock mass rating (RlVIR) and quality index (Q) classification systems were used. Several empirical methods were also used to design an optimal pattern for rock bolt installation in the particular tunnel under analysis.As such, the tunnel support system was designed using both finite element and empirical methods. Finally, the results obtained from both numerical and empirical methods were compared under different load conditions. The methodology prescribed in this paper, together with the comparison, can be a useful tool when selecting a support system. The results can also be used to design a support system in this and any other coal mine with similar conditions.INTRODUCTIONSince the advent of underground excavation techniques, one of the biggest challenges has been stabilizing tunnel walls and preventing roof collapse in tunnels and other underground openings, such as galleries. Loose rocks and layers drop into tunnels and galleries, except in very hard rock. Underground roof collapse and falling rocks can have devastating effects on the safety of operation personnel and equipment and can seriously affect production. When designing an underground coal mine, the stability of tunnels and galleries is an important parameter that should be studied carefully because it has an important role in the production process of the mine. Therefore, an appropriate and well-designed support system is necessary for preventing collapse and helping to stabilize the tunnels and galleries."

In blasting large tonnages of ore or material, the economy of the operation 'depends mainly on the mine manager's judgment in placing the holes to the best possible advantage and in determining the most effective size of hole to suit the conditions and requirements.The placing of holes is often looked upon as a problem involving so many uncertain factors that the application of simple mathematics is impossible. The uncertain factors arise when dealing with strata of different character, in hardness toughness and resistance to shearing.A study of the practice at many mines where all types of strata from hard ore to relatively soft overburden, and even coal, is being mined, suggests that the problem is not as complex as generally believed. There is, without doubt, some uniformity in the amount of burden given to holes of equivalent dimensions, regardless of the material being mined. The reason is simple. With too great a burden hard rock will not break out and soft rock will "bull". The nature of the strata is taken care of by the strength, quantity and distribution of the explosive charge and, to some extent, the spacing of the holes.It is because burdens are uniform in all classes of strata met with in mining, that a formula can be used to design blast hole layouts.The formula introduced in this paper is empirical as it is based on prevailing practice. It has been tested and proved remarkably accurate against every example available to the writer. Many thousands of blast holes, at many different mines, are represented by the examples given in the attached tables; to give further examples would only mean, unnecessary repetition. "Significant advances in mining and metallurgical operations have occurred over the last two decades, to define ore bodies via geological mapping, mineralogical analyses, geostatistical models and resource reserve modeling. Metallurgical process measurement, controls and modeling have also significantly progressed, with advanced instrumentation, control software, data capture systems and simulation tools. This progress together with development of the science of geometallurgy has allowed geologists, mineralogists, miners and metallurgists to start working together to define geometallurgical ore units and link these to mine planning and projected metallurgical performance. However, application of full geometallurgical programs into existing mine-processing operations or into new “greenfield” projects has been slow. This is mainly due to higher costs, limited dedicated technical resources and little or no corporate leadership. Additionally, life-of-mine cash flow models, the “dollars”, have been largely driven by ore tonnage rates, pay-metal grades and fixed pay-metal percentage recoveries, with few or no geometallurgical parameters included.Here defined, the “electrons” represent intrinsic ore characteristics embracing chemical composition, mineralogy, gangue components and their associated fundamental metallurgical processing phenomena. With its ever expanding treasure chest of measurement and modeling tools, geometallurgy paints a much clearer picture of the “electrons” for the geologist and metallurgist. But to fully understand and realize the real net value of ores over the life of a mine, a comprehensive link of “electrons to the dollars” is essential. Intrinsic characteristics of geometallurgical ore units are by definition linked to their metallurgical processing, but importantly need also to be related to operating costs, capital requirements and revenue.This paper discusses this important linkage under topics of ore geology and mineralogy, metallurgical processing, waste disposal, environmental issues, metal refining, project engineering and lifeof- mine models. "A study of the coal-based direct reduction behaviors of composite binder magnetite pellets was carried out in a simulating coal-based grate-rotary kiln process. It is shown that preheated pellets possess much better reducibility than fired oxide pellets: 40 min are required for preheated pellets to reach over 90% metallization degree compared to 100 min for fired oxide pellets. The compressive strength of preheated pellets decreases dramatically at the earlier stage of reduction, climbs quickly after reducing for 30min and achieves a high value at the end of reduction. However, the compressive strength of metallized pellets from reducing of fired pellets is much lower, more cracks and fractures being formed. In the preheated pellets, crystallite of metal iron is coarse. In the oxide pellet, a large number of interconnected crystals of metal iron are formed inside pellets, and pellet structure is very compact.IntroductionDirectly reduced iron is an excellent feed in electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking, and possesses low tramp element content and steady component. It is generally preferred in the production of high quality steel [1-3]. Nearly 64.44 million tons of DRI were produced in 2009 over the world, over 80% of which were produced by gas-based processes, the left by coal-based processes. However, the DRI capacity was only 600 thousand tons in China in 2009. The EAF steel production has exceeded 40 million tons annually, and most of EAF operate on hot metal as feed [4]."

Liquid metals were investigated as alloy diaphragms in molten salt electrolysis. Liquid metals have higher diffusion rates of elements than those of solid metals during electrolysis. Sn electrodes were used for the first step to study the electrochemical formation of Dy and Nd alloys in LiCl-KCl eutectic melts, demonstrating selective recovery of rare earth metals into liquid tin electrodes.

The Andover-Sulphur Hill iron mines in Sussex County, N. J., have a production record extending over 100 years. The last production recorded was about 1880. These mines produced high-grade ore of two types: Bed ore (hematite) and blue ore (magnetite. Some sulfides (lead, zinc, and copper) were found underlying the iron deposits. Data as to size and grade of these sulfide bodies are very sketchy, Toward. J. Hewitt of Elizabeth, N. J., lessee of the Sulphur Hill mines from 194045, prospected for lead, zinc, and copper. .His Only production was several hundred tons of low-grade iron ore, which was crushed and used as heavy aggregate to make concrete blocks for ship ballast. In October and November 1942 made a magnetic survey of this area and bored six-diamond-drill holes with the dual objective of prospecting for sulfides and testing for extensions of the iron-ore deposits indicated by the magnetic survey. In 1944, an iron-mining company examined this property and diamond-drilled seven holes Between December 1949 and March 1950, the Bureau Of Mines in search of sulfide deposits, bored three additional diamond-drill holes. Two of these were on the Sulphur Hill tract and one on the adjoining Tar Hill tract.

The Heavy Media Separation plant operated at Lidsdale siding, eight miles from Lithgow, by the N.S.W. Mining Co. is a product of the Western Machinery Company, of D.S.A.This mill, designed to use finely ground magnetite as the heavy medium, was prefabricated in America and shipped to Australia for erection.First operated early in December, 1951 it has worked on a two-shift basis since. Designed for an input rate of 330 tons per hour, this mill is capable of washing 4 in. x /u in. coal down to its inherent ash by removing all heavy material, including high-ash coal.The principle is quite simple. A stream of raw coal is fed into the separatory vessel which contains a liquid medium, the density of which is adjusted to produce the desired split between coal and refuse. In this bath the lightest coal floats, and all material heavier than the specific gravity of the medium sinks, and is removed separately. Such a system is,. ideally suited to Western coal, as there is no definite splitting point between coal and refuse. Inherent ash of the coal fed to the plant ranges from 8 to 25%, the corresponding density range being from 1.28 up to 1.8.Generally speaking, the higher the density the higher the ash content of the coal.The density in the separatory vessel (hereafter called the cone) can be quickly and easily adjusted throughout the above range to any desired value. This Technical Note was presented as a poster at the Western Cape Mineral Processing Symposium held in August 2001 The cleaning of fine coal (-1000 µm) in today?s coal preparation plants is an economically important factor. Coals with high ash contents are, in general, commercially undesirable. Current well-known techniques for treating fine coal include froth flotation and spirals. The primary critical factor with regards to spirals is the efficiency of the process whereas that of flotation, is the cost of there agents used. Research into enhanced gravity separation techniques has resulted in several commercially available enhanced gravity separators. This project was based on a preliminary investigation into the feasibility of one such separator, to effectively treat fine (-500 µm) coal. Experimental variables included particle size and speed of rotation of the said instrument. The performance of the separator was compared to the results obtained from liquid density separations done for the two coal fractions evaluated. From the results obtained in this preliminary study it appears that the piece of equipment investigated does not measure up to expectations. Recommendations for further investigation include the evaluation of the instrument on other South African coals to obtain conclusive results.
