"The consolidation of mine backfill by free zing is a concept which has been under study in the mining engineering laboratories at Laurentian University during the past three years. The proposed underground application of freezing involves the artificial freezing of in-situ backfill by means of a refrigerated brine solution which would be circulated through a circuit off freeze pipes. The most interesting findings to date are: (I) The uniaxial compressive strength off frozen fill is considerably higher than that of cemented fill in a ratio of 20:1 (aggregate to cement), and (2) load deformation characteristics of the frozen fill suggest that a higher ice content results in more brittle failure and that samples which have initially failed can still support up 10 one-half the ultimate load without additional failure.Although at this early stage a derailed economic analysis of the procedure has not been possible, a general evaluation of the costs involved suggests that the method could be competitive with the hydraulic placement of cemented backfill. Results obtained from laboratory investigations indicate that the freezing of backfill is a structurally feasible option .IntroductionGround consolidation by freezing is based on the principle of transformation o f water contained in an aggregate-slurry into ice, which act s as a binding agent between the bulk particles, and which results in the transformation of a granular soil into a ""rock -type"" material. The abrasive nature of the particles enhance s the strength o f the ice by providing internal friction. As a result of this internal friction, the chances of plastic flow of the frozen mass when in a loaded condition are reduced(1). T he strength of a frozen aggregate is al so dependent on the grain shape of the aggregate particles which may or may not promote particle interlocking(2) and on the temperature since, below the freezing point of the water/aggregate mixture, the strength of the frozen mass increase s with decreasing temperatures.In the shaft sinking industry, artificial freezing of loose , unconsolidated soils has been in practice for several decades. Shafts for Saskatchewan 's potash industry have been sun k to depths of 3000 feet by employing artificial freezing to stabilize the Blairmore Formation(3). The common procedure for freezing ground for shaft sinking is summarized as follows(4,5): I) 150 mm diameter bore holes spaced on 1.5 m centres are drilled in a circular pattern with a radius of 1.5 m outside the periphery of the proposed shaft."

IE the molecular constitution of molten slags were better known, the nature of chemical reactions in slags and between slags and metals could be better understood and as a consequence might be better controlled. Constitutional information can be obtained by studies on either the molten or the solidified slags. Valuable as the studies on solidified slags admittedly are for many purposes, especially as control methods in steelmaking, they are always of questionable value in giving information on the molecular constitution of liquid slags. However, the characteristics of molten slags such as viscosity, rates of dilfusion, and electrica1 conductivity can be determined experimentally and interpreted along with other knowledge on slag-metal and slag-gas reactions so as to provide direct information on liquid slags. Metallurgists are accustomed to regard reactions in molten slags as involving only neutral molecules, whereas it is quite possible that ionic constituents are actually involved. For example, the dissociation of calcium silicate usually is represented us Ca2SiO4 = 2CaO + SiO2 although a reasonable alternative would be to write Ca2SiO4 = 2Ca+2 + Si04-4 Such ionic dissociation has been suggested frequently without adequate experimental proof. This paper deals especially with electrical conductivity measurements on slags oi the blast-furnace type. These measurements were made to determine whether or not slags are ionized and, if so, to provide a qualitative estimate of the extent of ionization. Electrolysis experiments that indicate the identity of the ions present are also reported. Since the presence of ions has not been considered carefully in modern slag studies, the relevant literature will be reviewed. Review of Literature In 1906 Aikenl obtained a patent for a continuous process of producing iron electrolytically by passing a direct currenl through a bath of FeO.SiO2 to which iron oxide was added periodically to maintain a uniform concentration. The patent also included the addition of CaO and MgO to the bath to lower its melting point. The silicate melts involved were thus in the same system as basic open-hearth slags but with higher FeO and lower CaO contents. One year ago this month, we in Central Florida witnessed the beginning of a most exciting and glamorous attraction. After three years of construction and anticipation, Walt Disney World opened its gates near Orlando and during its first year of operation received a flood of over 10 million visitors---half of all who came to Florida last year! The side effects of this newest addition to Florida have been phenomenal. Traffic on heavy days has been backed up for 30 miles from the amusement park along a major interstate highway. Hotels and motels have been jammed packed for months, and reservations are still difficult to make. Gasoline stations, restaurants and souvenir shops are doing a booming business. Everywhere you look as you ride the highways of Central Florida you see the signs of growth. New hotels spring up almost overnight. Golf courses galore. New housing projects and apartments sprawl where orange groves used to be. New roads criss-cross areas which were once deserted. There seems to be no end to the steady influx of tourists and new residents to the Sunshine State. And it's mainly because that we are the Sunshine State that they come. Air and water pollution is and has been at a minimum in Florida. Pollution and emissions are fighting words among some groups dedicated to preserving the bountiful environment we share in Florida. Little wonder then that some of these people display concern when they learn that just 50 miles from the entrance to the Magic Kingdom of Disney, phosphate draglines strip away thousands of acres of land each year to extract one of our nation's most precious

Western Coalfield?s Tandsi Mine, has difficult support conditions and a history of roof falls, resulting in mining roadway widths and depths being restricted for safety reasons. Rock Mechanics Technology Ltd was contracted to improve the support system to allow the introduction of mechanised room and pillar mining. The introduction of a ?world best practice? bolting system resulted in major improvement in roof stability, allowing mining restrictions to be lifted and Tandsi to become one of the first two Indian mines to introduce a mechanised continuous miner system. The first year?s production was some six times previous levels. Because of the improvement in the support system, RMT was also able to design a partial de-pillaring system suitable for the Tandsi continuous miner districts together with the introduction of monitoring procedures and guidelines to maintain safe roof support conditions. In situ monitoring of pillar and roof behaviour was undertaken as the first pillars were extracted to confirm the design. De-pillaring operations have also proved highly productive, and to date there has been no associated support related major injury or dangerous occurrence. The success of this project demonstrates the potential for mechanised room and pillar mining in India.

Historically, production from sublevels of the Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) started from blind uphole rises at the end of slot drives. Where previous investigations considered removing these slot drives and starting production with independent ore drives, any development savings were consumed when drives were extended to minimise ore loss. Since 2017, EHM and Orica have been investigating opportunities to optimise drill and blast practices by implementing Orica’s Wireless Electronic Blasting System (WEBS). To reduce ore drive development metres, a novel design was proposed utilising the WebGen™ 100 system to combine a rise with pre-charged widening firings. Initially these new rise and widening firings achieved results similar to previous EHM designs, achieving on average 81 per cent of design height and width. Due to poor performance of the fourth trial a significant re-design was required. Modifications included drill hole re-positioning, in-hole primer relocation and initiation delay adjustments. Since the re-design a step change in rise performance has been observed with rise and pre-charged widening shots averaging 95 per cent of design height and width. With rise and widening performance exceeding expectations, the removal of slot drives has allowed a substantial reduction in lateral development. Development savings of 165 m and 169 m from the RL1325 and RL1300 levels have been achieved. Primary draw and ore recovery has also increased due to the later addition of pre charged forward stripping rings. Level design changes have also significantly improved the mining cycle by allowing for a reduction in required ground support, improved secondary ventilation, a reduction of critical path development, simpler production scheduling and less wear and tear on machinery. Future mine level designs now incorporate key learnings and are proving beneficial to a variety of scenarios including changing orebody boundaries at depth.

After the explosion at Middelbult Colliery, South Africa in May1993, which claimed 53 lives, the South African Coal Mining Industry and the Safety In Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) united forces to establish a surface facility to develop and test on-board flame suppression systems for continuous miners and roadheaders. The first test that was conducted in this newly constructed test tunnel at the Kloppersbos Research Facility, CSIR was in July 1995.Since then 70 tests have been conducted using the facility and have focused on on-board active ignition suppression systems for continuous miners (CM) and road heading (RH) machines to enhance the safety of South African mine workers in collieries. These suppression systems are mounted on the CM or RH machine and detect the occurrence of an ignition by means of light-sensitive sensors. The electronic signal from the sensor triggers the suppression system, creating a flame-suppression curtain, containing and extinguishing the flame in the immediate vicinity of the ignition. Forty-three tests have been conducted with an active on-board suppression system present inside the test tunnel. Since flame propagation speed is an extremely important parameter, the CSIR-Miningtek made the results of the test programme available for re-analysis. Flame speed depended on whether a machine was present in the heading or not, the geometry of the heading and the volume and composition of the explosive mixture of gas. Flame speeds of up to 190 m/s were recorded. However, the active suppression systems were almost always successful in containing flame propagation.

For the period January 1st, 1942, to January 1st, 1946, the American Bureau of Metal Statistics records the gold production of the world as 118,788,000 fine ounces. If we include 1946 at the same rate as 1945 (26,- 590,000), we arrive at a total of 145,378,000 fine ounces in the past five years . Included in these figures are estimates of Russian output at 4,000,000 ounces per annum for the five years, and 1,300,000 ounces per annum for Korea and Japan. The remaining 120,000,000 ounces represent the aggregate production from official reports of the other gold producing areas of the world, with the exception of the 1946 figures, as noted above. At $35.00 per fine ounce, this represents $5,188,230,000. According to the reports of the Federal Reserve System of the United States, on December 31st, 1941, the monetary gold reserves of the United States were $22,736,- 600,000 (at $35.00 per fine ounce) , while on October 31st, 1946 (latest available) , they had fallen to $20,402,000,000, a decline of $2,334,600,000. Adding this decline to the value of the new production for the five years, we have a total of $7,522,830,000, which has been absorbed by the rest of the world since Pearl Harbour, a rate of absorption of over $1,500,000,000 per annum. This has taken place at a rime when the advocates of purely managed currencies had convinced many people that gold performed no really essential function in the world's economy, and that we could get along perfectly well without it. It was pointed out that gold could not be eaten, it could not clothe our nakedness, it could not shelter us from storms, and, therefore, it was a non-essential, even though it could be used to settle international balances of trade. Apparently, the world as a whole still regards it as preferable to the paper promises of governments, however sound, relatively, they may appear. Actually, we have no way of measuring the true strength of this feeling, because the principal governments of the world have made it legally impossible for their citizens to own gold, except in the form of ornaments.

"The New Brunswick gypsum and an-hydrite deposits make up part of the Windsor group in the Upper Mississippian. The present deposits were formed by surface hydration of the underlying anhydrite beds. The sub-hydrate, hydrate, and di-hydrate stages of gypsum are formed from the anhydrite by this hydration. The anhydrite was precipitated from sea water in embayments that were separated from the sea by a reef or bay-mouth bar. The anhydrite is the original form of the calcium sulphate precipitate.One gypsum deposit near Plaster Rock in northern New Brunswick was precipitated from sea water directly as gypsum, which is its present form."

"The paper describes the author's experiences in the startup of autogenous and semiautogenous grinding circuits gained over the last twenty years on both large and small grinding circuits. Typical phases in commissioning from construction to startup with ore are covered. The paper also describes experiences with material handling systems, slurry pumping, vibrating screens, trommel screens and pebbles crushing systems. INTRODUCTIONThe commissioning of any new mineral processing plant is an important and exciting milestone in any project. It is at this point in time that the efforts of developers, design engineers, equipment suppliers and operators culminate in a finished product. The successful completion of any project requires that the plant achieve design throughput as quickly as possible. The success of any startup can generally be anticipated by the amount of careful planning which takes place before equipment is operated. The first part of this paper describes the steps in going from construction through to introduction of ore. The organization and planning of startup activities is also covered.The second part of this paper describes some typical problem areas and past experiences in the startup of semi-autogenous grinding circuits. Semi-autogenous grinding circuits present some special challenges in the startup phase. The description of some of these problems and experiences will hopefully provide other operators with suggestions on how to avoid (or at least prepare for) these problems."

This paper enumerates various difficulties encountered in the design and construction of deep caisson foundations for the Second Bassein Creek Bridge constructed over a creek with very difficult site conditions. The designer of the bridge had anticipated the problems associated with the construction of large diameter floating caissons and limited the maximum size of caisson to 12.5m O.D. facilitated by the means of Shock Transmission Units (STUs). This is the first road bridge in India where STUs are installed to distribute seismic horizontal loads among piers installed with fixed and unidirectional bearings. Besides the usual difficulties of tilts, shifts, and sinking in the construction of floating caissons, the paper also describes a novel methodology used to retrieve a circular 12.5m O.D. caisson which had been swept away during a storm and stuck into the creek bed.

The paper point out that shaft hoists operated in Polish mines represent the average wolrd standard. In this sense, transport of mining personnel and mined material from increased depths causes no major problems, the number of hoists of considerable loading capacity still increases despite the increase in the shaft depth; the output per one mine hoist has grown considerably and high safety standards in personnel transport are provided (in the last 10 years no life was lost during personnel transport).

The Laurentian University Virtual Reality Laboratory (VRL) has provided a unique platform for the development and testing of novel seismic and microseismic data processing and visualization technology. In collaboration with Vale?s Creighton Mine, the technology was implemented at the mine site and consists of a VRL system and site calibrated Seismic Excavation Hazard Map (SEHM) software. The SEHM was developed as a practical solution for the mine operator to identify areas of elevated, active rock mass damage processes caused by recent mining activity. This paper is a pictorial representation of the 3D stereoscopic demonstration of the Creighton Mine seismic data distribution and interpreted SEHM for the first quarter of 2009. A live demonstration is scheduled at the Laurentian University VRL as one of the conference field trips. The demonstration highlights the technology transfer of research concepts into a near-real-time excavation hazard system that utilizes the key aspects of virtual reality technology; the ability to integrate large datasets (geology, mine excavation, (seismic) monitoring data, production scheduling, stress model, etc.); the ability to manipulate and visualize large datasets in both space and in time (mining sequence); and the ability to review the datasets by a group of experts in an immersive (3D stereoscopic), collaborative environment to better understand the processes and context of the mining-induced seismicity and evaluate potential risks to the mining operation.

THIS PUBLICATION is the third to be prepared as a result of a cooperative project by the Bureau of Ships and the Bureau of Mines for accumulating literature published on zirconium and hafnium. The undertaking also resulted in the establishment of an information center on zirconium and hafnium at the Bureau of Mines station at Albany, Oreg., for the use of research organizations and others. The present bibliography consists of references (with abstracts) to pertinent literature on zirconium. The first publication in this series was Information Circular 7771, Bibliography of Zirconium, published in April 1957. It consists of 969 abstracted reports and 645 U.S. and foreign patents. The second publication, called a supplement to Information Circular 7771, is numbered Information Circular 7830 and consists of 844 abstracted reports and 62 U.S. and foreign patents. It was published in October 1958.

National Society of Professional Engineers has thrown its full sup- port behind pending legislation to appropriate $500 million for national conversion efforts that would provide employment opportunities for engineers, scientists, and technicians who are currently unemployed because of the decline in defense and aerospace programs. Known as the Davis-Giaimo bill, the proposed legislation would raise total Federal investment in science and technology to an adequate annual spending level and keep it proportionally equal to the growth in the GNP. If passed, the bill would increase and maintain Federal obligations for civilian-oriented research and development activities to a parity level with similar obligations for defense research development. U. S. Bureau of Mines has cataloged and placed on open file an inventory of U.S. coal deposits which can be economically strip mined at today's production costs. The costs include charges for reclaiming the mined land as required by 21 states. The report claims that some 46 billion tons of bituminous coal and lignite can be strip mined under present economic conditions, and that 32 billion tons of the total is classified as having less than 1% S. The report reviews strippable coal deposits by state, by county, by coal seam, by coal-seam thickness and by sulfur content. The report also gives an up-to-date summary of state laws on surface mine reclamation. Open-file copies of "Strippable Reserves of Bituminous Coal and Lignite in the U.S." may be consulted in Washington, D.C., at the Department of the Interior library and at U.S. Bureau of Mines offices in Pittsburgh, Denver, San Francisco. I. Introduction The experimental work described in this paper was carried out during 1967 and 1968 in an inclined reinforced concrete adit which had been driven during 1965 and 1966 to provide primary access for a new gypsum mine. The new mine was situated near the village of Sherburn-in-Elmet in central Yorkshire in an area of extensive post-glacial plains of deltaic and lacustrine origin. These plains cover a large area of this part of Yorkshire extending inland from the coast for a distance of about 35 miles. The gypsum deposit at Sherburn dates from Permian times and it is considered" to have been associated with the western-most edges of the ancient Zechstein Sea which was also responsible for the formation of the extensive evaporite deposits in north-east Yorkshire. The gypsum deposit, which varies in thickness from 10 to 15 feet, is extremely pure and it occurs quite close to the surface; in the Sherburn area the overburden is only 120 feet thick. The proximity of the deposit to the surface, however, tends to give a somewhat false idea of the magnitude of the problems associated with its extraction. These problems were all related to the nature of the overlying strata. As has already been mentioned, the surface deposits are post-glacial and they consist of an extremely large number of thin layers of varved clays, fine silts and sands extending down to a depth of 75 feet. From the bottom of the post-glacial deposits to the seam, a distance of about 45 feet, the strata consists of a succession of marls, weak sandstones, and siltstones, which although they are inherently incompetent materials, are appreciably stronger

India bestowed with 6000km of the coastal belt, contains some of the richest and largest placer deposits with a mixture of heavy minerals like ilmenite, rutile, leucoxene, zircon, monazite, sillimanite and garnet. Each of the minerals is having economic value due to its inherent characteristics for industrial use in fields of paints, metallurgy, refractory, abrasive and so on. The reserves of titanium bearing minerals (ilmenite, leucoxene, and rutile) in the country is around 378 million tonnes. More than 90% of the titanium based minerals produced worldwide are utilised for making value added products in the pigment industries. Approximately 8 million tonnes of monazite reserves are available in the country from which several rare earth elements like cerium, neodymium, lanthanum, yttrium etc. can be extracted for use in several industries. The country contains a deposit of about 20 million tonnes of zircon, which is used in foundries, refractories, ceramics and chemicals. India has a reserve of 107 million tonnes of garnet and 131 million tonnes of sillimanite required for the abrasive and refractory industries respectively. Keeping in view the multifarious uses, the beach sand minerals are being exploited to have the economic growth of the nation. Although the process adopted for the separations are simple, the equipment involved are specially designed because of the nature of the material of construction. Starting from the spirals to magnetic separators, all equipments are manufactured outside India, which is not only costly, but the availability also takes much time for fulfilling the import formalities. Unlike open cast mining, beach sand mining is a environment friendly mining because dredging is implemented to cut and pump the loose sand through a slurry pump causing less damage to the surface topography as both mining and backfilling takes place simultaneously. Therefore all out efforts are made to explore the beach sand placer deposits in an economic manner to emerge as a leader in the global mineral industries.

Velocity, kinetic energy and shear in crossflow beneath three-cone jet bits may influence cleaning of the bottom of the borehole and the teeth of the bit. Laboratory investigation shows that each of these parameters is a function of the diameter of the borehole and the product of the volume rate of flow and velocity through the nozzles (QVn). Increasing QV, or decreasing the diameter of the borehole increases each parameter. These functions provide means of predicting the magnitude of each parameter and of scaling the cleaning forces. INTRODUCTION In drilling operations using conventional jet-type rock bits, the impinging jels create an important flow mechanism. Called crossflow, this flow mechanism originates in the impact area of the jets, spreads across the bottom of the hole and supplies the principal source of energy to clean the teeth of the bit and most of the bottom.' Besides providing the means of cleaning cuttings from the bit and the hole bottom, crossflow may also have other, less direct, effects on the rate of penetration. The shear stress generated on the bottom by crossflow will inIluence the thickness and permeability of any filter cake of mud solids or crushed material which forms on the bottom.' These factors may affect the rate of penetration. A previous pulblication introduced some fundamental concepts of crossflow.' Crossllow was shown to occur in a thin layer adjacent to the bottom, and to cover the bottom completely. The maximum velocity in the crossflow above any position on the bottom was found to be directly proporlional to the square root of the product of the volume rate of flow and velocity through the nozzles—the jct QV,,—and inversely proportional to the diameter of the borehole. This information indicated that the effectiveness of crossllow in scavenging the bottom can be improved by maximizing the jet QV. The investigation reported herein amplifies the definition of crossflow. Complete velocity profile data above a representative position on the bottom are analyzed. These data better illustrate control of the capacity of crossflow to scavenge the bottom, and also relate shear stress on the bottom to known, controllable parameters. The conclusion reached in the previous publication that maximization of the jet QV. produces the maximunl cleaning beneath current jet bits is unchanged by these new data; rather, it is strcngthened. Data presented here show that the kinetic energy flux above a representative position on the bottom is maximized by maximizing the jet QV. The shear stress on the bottom will also be shown to be maximized in the same manner. Since the functions relating the jet QV. to velocity, shear stress and kinetic energy also involve the diameter of the borehole, means of equating, or scaling, these quantities in different sizes of boreholes will be illustrated. EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT AND TECHNIQUE JET BIT MODEL Data were recorded from the same laboratory model as used in the aforementioned investigation of the flow around a jet bit.' The model consisted of a 43/4-in. three-cone, jet-type rock bit in a smooth, flat-bottomed borehole constructed of lucite. The bit had a shape and nozzle placement closely resembling larger three-cone jet bits commonly used in field operations. Fig. 1 illustrates the impact area on the bottom of a jet from this bit. Details of the orientation of the jets may be found in the previous publication. TECHNIOU'E OF MEASUREMENT Measurements of the crossflow were made by inserting a very small Pitot tube through the bottom of the simulatetl boreholc. Extreme thinness of the layer of crossflow necessitated accurate measurements of the height of the Pitot tube above the bottom to achieve close definition of the velocity profile. A cathetometer, which could be read to the nearest 0.005 cm, was used to make this measurement.

ABSTRACT: Despite many years of practical applications in mineral processing plants, the potential of column flotation has still not been fully exploited. The challenge in measuring some key variables is certainly an important contributing factor to this situation. Reliable online measurement of variables, such as the froth depth, bias, gas hold-up, frother concentration, bubble surface area flux, and bubble size distribution, provides opportunities for the application of various advanced control strategies and real-time optimization based on an economic criterion. For several years, Université Laval’sLaboratoire d’observation et d’optimisation des procédés researchers have been working on these opportunities. This paper describes the most recent advances and current research trends.

Nowadays, stakeholders have a strong say to the enforcement of best practices by mining and quarrying companies. In most cases there is a direct relationship between sustainable development principles and best practices. Mining companies try to apply best practices in order to sustain their operation without lost time and effort to litigation, and other obstacles. However, when and where there is a lack of state or regional mineral policy, or when the mineral policy is fragmented and touching on conflicting laws, mining operations may be subject to additional administrative hassles, and, thus, operators feel threatened and tend to apply best practices loosely. This paper argues that the only way that mining and minerals operations can be a source of development is to ensure that they are working within the framework of sustainable development. Furthermore, in order to follow the paradigm of sustainable development they would need to be guided by a regional, national or even transnational (i.e. European) minerals policy.
