The subject of this paper is one to which there are many references in the literature but on which few actual data have been published. Such data are here presented showing the absorption of sulfur from producer gas in two open-hearth heats. This absorption occurs during the melting-down stage. Results of analyses of slag and metal samples taken simultaneously from the bath are given. THE subject of this paper is one to which there are many references in the literature on the manufacture of steel in the open-hearth furnace, but few actual experimental data have been published. For that reason, the presentation of results obtained from two open-hearth heats where attempts were made to measure the sulfur absorption will be of considerable interest and value. The two heats on which the experiments were made were Armco ingot-iron heats and differ from the usual open-hearth heat of medium- or mild-carbon steel in that the refining is carried further; in this product the carbon and manganese are reduced practically to traces. Inmost other respects, and especially in respect to the absorption of sulfur from the producer gas, the two heats are typical of usual open-hearth practice. The object of the experiments made on the first Armco iron heat was to determine the fluctuation of the composition of the metal bath and the slag throughout the course of the heat, with especial reference to the variations in sulfur. It was hoped to, determine whether there was an increase in sulfur in the bath from the producer gas and if so at what stage in the process the increase occurred. The experimental method consisted of charging analyzed scrap and pig iron, so that the sulfur in the charge could be calculated. Then, throughout the duration of the heat, metal and slag samples were taken every half hour, beginning as soon as there was enough molten metal to take a sample. The hazards which naturally prevail in underground coal mines, always severe and unpredictable due to the loosely-consolidated strata in which coal is frequently found, are increased by the commonly-occurring combination of coal dust, methane, and explosives. It was recognized by the mid-nineteenth century that coal dust was the basic factor contributing to disastrous explosions killing hundreds of miners, and that the ignition of methane gas was often the source of the coal dust explosions. It was apparent that preventing the ignition of methane was a critical part of avoiding these disasters, and it was also apparent that one cause of such ignitions was the firing of explosives. In addition, it was found that dust explosions were often initiated by blown-out shots of explosives in the absence of methane.

Gold extraction along the Carlin trend requires large withdrawals of ground water, which can be perched, unconfined at shallow depth, and (or) confined at depth. Five hydrogeologic units-Quaternary basin-fill sediments, Tertiary basin-fill sediments and sedimentary rocks, Tertiary volcanic rocks, Devonian to Ordovician siltstones, and Devonian to Ordovician carbonate rocks--form the framework for two aquifer systems that discharge along some reaches of the Humboldt River and its tributaries and are recharged by streamflow along other reaches. Ground-water withdrawals eventually could affect these stream-aquifer interactions. Further work is needed to quantify regional hydrologic processes and evaluate potential effects of mining on water resources.

THERE has been considerable discussion among A metallurgists and others interested in the development of titanium alloys as to the nature of the fine line markings which appear in the microstruc-tures of unalloyed titanium and a titanium alloys. These markings have been variously called x phase, etching pits, and twins. Figs. 1 to 3 show typical examples of the line markings as they appear, respectively, in high purity iodide titanium, commercial purity titanium rod, and a high purity a alloy containing 0.2 pct N. The commercial purity titanium sample, shown in Fig. 2, contains both line markings and some spheroidal retained-ß phase. The ß phase seen in this micrograph should not be confused with the line marking, since it originates from the iron present as an impurity in the sponge metal. It will be noted that the line markings seem to have a definite orientation pattern with respect to the grains and in titanium noticeably resemble the precipitation occurring in artificially aged high purity Al-Cu alloys. This similarity led to the hypothesis that the line markings observed in titanium and a titanium alloys resulted from precipitation of some unknown phase. With the work of Hägg1 and McQuillan2 as background, there was little reason to suspect hydrogen of being responsible for the line markings. Hagg reported that up to 33 atomic pct H was soluble in a titanium, and McQuillan reported an a solubility of up to 8 atomic pct. Furthermore, McQuillan examined metallographically a 5.1 atomic pct H alloy quenched from 300°C and stated that the structure appeared to be a single-phase a solid solution. Line markings have been observed frequently and were first noted by Jaffee and Campbell3 in 1949. They did not observe them in vacuum-annealed titanium and a Ti-O and Ti-N alloys, but did observe them in Ti-H alloys containing 0.25, 0.5, and 1 atomic pct H. They stated that it was doubtful that the markings were a second phase based on hydrogen, because 1 atomic pct was far from the accepted solid solubility of hydrogen in titanium. Finlay, Resketo, and Vordahl,4 in 1950, concluded that the markings were a true second phase as a result of observations on their etching characteristics. Anderson5 Commenting on these markings in titanium was inclined to associate them with hydrogen, but was loath to call them titanium hydride, because of the reported high solubility of hydrogen. Work at Battelle Memorial Institute for the Navy Bureau of Aeronautics," done concurrently with the work described in this paper, provided information on the experiment converse to that described by Jaffee and Campbell in 1949. This work showed that the amount of line markings in unalloyed titanium could be decreased by vacuum annealing at elevated temperature. It was suggested that this was the result of removal of hydrogen; previously, the data of Jaffee and Campbell9 howed that the markings appeared when hydrogen was added. Recent work at Battelle for the Ordnance Corps, Department of the Army, which is described here, now establishes the identity of the markings as a titanium hydride phase. A sample of high-purity titanium rod 1/4 in. diam, 0.009±0.001 wt pct H (0.43 atomic pct), Fig. 1, was resistance heated in a 0.05 micron vacuum for 41/2 hr at 1500°C. During the early states of heating, the pressure increased to 150 microns, indicating that gases were being evolved. After cooling in vacuum, the iodide titanium rod was analyzed for hydrogen. Vacuum-fusion analysis showed 0.0006 ±0.0003 wt pct H (0.03 atomic pct) to be present.* Metallographic examination of the vacuum-annealed rod showed only a transformed ß structure. "The possibilities of greenhouse gas mitigation using various methods are brought out. The special case of utilization of mixture of CO2 with other greenhouse gases in a synergetic way inside non-thermal plasma based system is described in detail.Measurements on pilot system comprising pyrolysis chamber as alternative energy system (production of hydrogen and liquid tar) were made for various biomass and waste as the input material. The exhaust from this system was treated with non-thermal plasma gap suitable for up to 650Nm3/hour of exhaust gas flow. Condensable portion of exhaust is liquefied in distillation unit; produced hydrogen is stored on-line inside nano sized carbon of our own production.The CO2 removal efficiency varies depending on exhaust composition between 45 to 98%. Other oxides as CO, NOx, SOx and several hydrocarbons and VOC are also removed. The main product connected with CO2 removal is a solid powder of proteinoid nature. There exist strong probability, that precursor of the origin of life on the Earth from primary atmosphere were formed in the similar way as it is present in the electric discharge system used. Our system is equipped with on-line as well as ex-post analysis of all forms of products. We have also developed a system for recuperation of all forms of produced heat. It is stored inside as latent heat of waxes.IntroductionNatural greenhouse effect on the Earth is caused mainly by water vapour with the average absolute concentration about 4%. Other gases able to absorb long-wave radiation and thus this causing greenhouse effect are CO2, CH4, N2O, halocarbons and as precursors ozone and NOX. Some of them we produce and introduce into atmosphere in large quantities during production of energy and in transport. This factor leads to permanent increase of average temperature of air, sea and oceans, so called global warming.Nowadays large amount of data exists showing that the temperature of Earth in the last 150 years has been continually increasing. It represents about 03°C per ten years and the most of climatologist believe, that the increased concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is responsible for this effect.The most important greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide CO2. Majority of CO2 emissions comes from electric power stations working with fossil fuels, cars and industry. Burning of fossil fuels contribute up to 80% to world wide anthropogenetic emissions of CO2."

A simple gravimetric procedure was developed for the rapid determination of carbon dioxide in coal mine roadway dust samples and the result is used for the subsequent calculation of incombustible matter contentaccording to the requirements of the Queensland Coal Mining Act. The carbon dioxide is determined through loss of mass by a semi-enclosed apparatus, following room-temper.ature hydrochloric acid attack on the sample.With a sample containing 36 per cent carbon dioxide, the achieved standard deviation (ls) of 0·3 per cent CO. is adequate for coal mine roadway dust analysis.This simple procedure enables relatively unskilled labour in mine laboratories, to analyze coal mine roadway dust samples in accordance with the Act. Some 50 analyses can be achieved per day compared with 8 by the Australian Standard Method for coal.

Prior to rehabilitation, plant cover on quartz gravel overburden at Wangaloa coal mine was highly patchy. Stabilisation techniques have since considerably altered the condition of the main overburden yet deposits in the east and west remain largely intact. On the eastern overburden, three distinct zones of revegetation have naturally developed: Zone 1 represents a dense plant cover, Zone 2 a patchy cover and Zone 3 a sparse cover of isolated plants. Aerial photographs show much of the eastern overburden was deposited between 1940 and 1960s. Yet we found that the temporal scale of deposition did not wholly account for the differences observed in vegetation development. To investigate other influential factors, we set up 12 study plots using four replicates in each vegetation zone. The diversity and density of plants in each plot were measured to quantify the degree of vegetation development. Samples from the substrate in each plot were collected using soil cores to a depth of 10 cm. Cores were analysed for indicators of nutrient availability, metal content and physical composition. We found that substrate chemistry varied between individual study plots, but showed little difference overall along the vegetation gradient. Substrate physical differences were much greater. The ratio of coarse quartz pebbles: fines was considerably higher in Zone 3 than other zones, and within zones where plants were not growing. Bulk density also increased successively from Zone 1 - 3. We found clear evidence for the reversed stratigraphy of excavation superimposed over the time scale of deposition, and the corresponding nature of fine particles. The rate of revegetation was therefore highly dependent upon the substrate composition of the last surface deposit from the dumping truck. Our data suggests an optimum ratio exists between inert coarse material and a fine matrix for progressive natural vegetation development on mine substrates.

Magnesium and its alloys have long been characterized as possessing limited capacity for mechanical forming at atmospheric temperatures prior to rupturing despite their outstanding performances in this respect at elevated temperatures. Responsible for this behavior are the fundamental facts that these hexagonal-type metals have comparatively few slip elements at low temperatures for any extensive deformation and that, at high temperatures, additional slip elements become operative, thus enhancing greater plasticity under strain. The transitionai point has been set at 2 25°C by Schmidl for single crystals, and at 250°C by Morel1 and Hanawalt² for extruded magnesium metal. In a recent X-ray investigation on poly-crystalline magnesium-alloy sheets, Barrett and Haller3 have revealed that, below the transitional tempelature, the initial plastic deformation proceeds mostly by a twinning action; that, above such a temperature, the action is mostly by slip. The deep-drawing performance of the magnesium + 1.5 pct alloy sheet† over a wide range of temperatures has been investigated by Weber and Vanden Berg,' and their results are presented in Fig I. It should be noted from this work that a maximum drawability of about 25 pct at room temperature has been obtained on this alloy under the conventional deep-drawing operations. For the same alloy, it is now possible to augment the cold drawability to about 40 pct by a process to be disclosed. Hitherto, this value has been obtained only by deep-drawing the alloy at around 230°C. That greater plastic flow is attainable at atmospheric temperatures on magnesium under certain deformational techniques was discovered by the authors6 in their analyses of plastic-deformational behaviors of pure magnesium. This fact is best illustrated in Fig 2 from the Har-greaves analysis6 performed by the authors under two different modes of loading. For direct test, a separate unstrained specimen was used for each load duration, whereas for the integrated test the same specimen was employed for all the five intermittent loadings so that the load duration was made additive throughout the investigation. The higher plastic flow-rate at room temperature, as designated by the Har-greaves constant S, was obtained by the integrated or intermittent loading procedure. The authors6 in further tests showed that, under such a procedure greater plastic flow was also realized with a progressive increase in deformatione 1 loads. These findings have been applicd

The use of activated carbon to improve the selectivity in the separation of base metal minerals from bulk concentrates played an important role in the development of separation techniques employed at Tsumeb and Kombat mines. The Kombat mine, owned and operated by Tsumeb Corp. Ltd., is located in the Otavi Valley in the northern part of South West Africa, approximately 213 air miles north of Windhoek and 38 air miles south of Tsumeb, at latitude 19° 43'S and longitude 17º 41'E. The mine is linked to all major centers by both national railroad and tarmac highway systems which pass right through the town. The Otavi Minen- and Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (OMEG) mined ore on the farm Asis from 1908-1925. Tsumeb Corp. Ltd. acquired the mineral rights in 1947, started diamond drilling in 1954 and commenced mine development in 1960. The mill started production in 1962 when proven ore reserves were 3,378,084 st containing 2.85% Cu and 2.90%Pb. Annual production of 248,411 st was increased in May, 1967 to the rate of 422,990 st, which was still being maintained in 1971, when ore reserves stood at 3,054,701 st of grade 1,91% Cu and 2.5% Pb.

THIS paper describes the results of microscopic examination of a series of brass pipes removed from apartment and office buildings in New York City, adjacent localities on Long Island, and Philadelphia. They were selected as typical of approximately four hundred pipe specimens obtained over a period of five years during an investigation of corrosion in hot-water installations. A part of the investigation is reported in this paper and includes a brief history of the pipes, a description of their inside surface and microstructure, and a study of the effects of corrosion, with particular reference to the structural aspects of local and selective dezincification. Although the bibliography on the corrosion of brass pipes is quite extensive, it refers almost entirely to corrosion in sea water. The authors believe that their examination of this series of pipes, which had been subjected to the corrosive action of fresh water for various lengths of time, may throw some additional light on the problem of corrosion. PIPES EXAMINED The pipes were made by different manufacturers and their sizes range from ¾ in. to 4 in. nominal inside diameter, the majority being within I to 2 in. They can be divided into two groups according to chemical composition: (I) with a copper content of 60 to 62 per cent and (2) with a copper content of 65 to 68 per cent. The first group (pipes made of Muntz metal) comprises 22 pipes and the second (pipes made of high brass) comprises 18 pipes. The pipes had been in service in various locations in the hot-water systems of the buildings involved. Some were taken from horizontal lines in the basement, some from overhead distributors and some from vertical risers. The distance, in terms of feet of pipe, of the specimens from the hot-water generator was no less than 75 ft. and often 100 to 300 ft. In the majority of cases the water-heating equipment was provided with a regulator to limit the temperature of the hot water supply. The normal range of temperature in pipe systems of this kind is 100° to 160°F. WATER SUPPLIES The average chemical composition of the water supplies carried by the pipes is shown in Table I. In evaluating the corrosiveness of a natural water, four factors are considered of prime importance: namely, hardness, alkalinity, pH and silica content. The waters listed in Table I are characterized by relatively low hardness, low alkalinity, low pH and low silica content. The waters of lower pH and higher CO2 content are more corrosive. "The Nechalacho rare metal deposit, located in the Northwest Territories, Canada, is currently being taken through Feasibility Study by Avalon Rare Metals Inc. QEMSCAN analysis and supplementary electron microprobe analysis were utilized to identify and quantify the mineralogy of the deposit, and determine REE distribution among the minerals. QEMSCAN mineralogy was performed to provide textural information on the mineralization, determine the variability of the ore and identify REE domains, and the liberation and association of the REE minerals. The sample matrix consists predominantly of silicate minerals. The REE minerals include allanite, monazite, synchysite, columbite, fergusonite, and bastnaesite. Zircon is present in considerable amounts and is a REE carrier. Fergusonite and zircon account for most of the HREE, and monazite, allanite, synchysite and bastnaesite the LREE. QEMSCAN mineralogical data is extremely valuable in assessing the mineralogy of the ore. The data are implemented to define the mineralogy of the ore body, support metallurgical test work, and predict recoveries and grades.INTRODUCTIONThe term rare earth elements (REE) is used to describe the 15 lanthanide elements or metals and, more recently, the metals yttrium and scandium, which display similar physical and chemical properties.Economic and potentially economic REE deposits form two main groups, a more commonly occurring “light rare earth element” (LREE) group containing lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, and samarium and a less commonly occurring “heavy rare earth element” (HREE) group which, in addition to the LREE, contains elevated concentrations of the more valuable REE, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, yttrium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, lutetium and scandium. The first group is hosted primarily by carbonatites and the second by highly alkaline (Na + K > Al) silicate igneous rocks. The LREE are produced mainly from bastnaesite, monazite, etc., while HREE are produced almost exclusively from low-grade secondary ion adsorption clay deposits in which the REE are adsorbed onto the surfaces of kaolinite and halloysite, clay minerals produced by the weathering of granite and sediments. HREE are also found in fegusonite, zircon, xenotime, etc but are not produced presently from these minerals. China is responsible for 97% of the World’s production of the REE, mainly from the giant Bayan Obo, carbonatite-related deposit and from the clay deposits mentioned above.Quantitative automated mineralogy is increasingly being applied to ore deposits. It helps users to understand and improve mineralogical parameters for geological and metallurgical purposes. Data include textural characterization, to quantification and distribution of ore and gangue minerals, liberation and association of the REE minerals. The data can be used to define mineralogical domains and predict the metallurgical response of the ore (Gunning, de Souza, & Grammatikopoulos, 2009)."

The Belizean economy registered a modest real growth of 1.3% during 1981. The gross domestic product (GDP), based on current prim was $121 million' with an inflation-rate of 10%. The country received $19 million in economic aid during 1981. In early 1981, Belize'e four commercial banks raised the interest on deposits to 15% in an effort to curb capital outflow. During 1981, the financial situation deteriorated somewhat, particularly the balance of payments. For the year the total value of imports exceeded exports by almost $38 million, while the Government continued to maintain a fairly free trade policy. Import duties and term averaged about 8% on essential item and 40% on nonessential ones.

A portable electronic instrument was developed which will measure change of longitudinal wave velocity with change of uniaxial stress in rock columns. The instrument is a solid-state device powered by nickel-cadmium batteries. It uses a probe of two piezo-electric crystals spaced inches apart to send and receive a pulse through a stressed rock. A one-inch cathode ray oscilloscope visually displays the longitudinal wave. A reference chart is used to find the stress. Laboratory results have indicated that the average stress on a sandstone column can be found to within 35 psi. The feasibility of using this instrument to determine stresses in mine pillars is to be studied. The instrument may be used to investigate physical properties of rock.

High temperature mechanical properties of 50Cr5MoV roll steel was investigated by Gleeble 1500 thermal simulator testing machine The morphology, composition and microstructure of fracture surface were observed and analyzed by OM, SEM and EDS The results are indicative of that, there are two brittle temperature zones of 50Cr5MoV roll steel at the temperature of 600°C~950°C and 1300°C~1450°C, respectively. The section shrinkage rate is less than 60% The fracture mode changes from mixed ones dominated by intergranular to toughness transgranular one with the increase of temperature at the range of 650°C~1300°C. The fracture is along the solid--liquid phase at the range of 1300°C~ melting point It is crucial to formulate the 50Cr5MoV casting technology, to prevent the cracks and improve the quality of 50Cr5MoV roll steel.

Rock bolting or anchoring are methods of stabilization which are not being fully utilized in California and probably in other parts of the world due to lack of understanding of the principles, or due to poor results in actual installation. The problem is greater in California because so much of the rock is either soft or badly fractured and broken. Almost any recognized type of rock bolt or anchor will perform successfully is hard, fresh rock, but the problems become many-fold when working in decomposed granites, shales, soft sandstones or other soft, highly-broken rock. There has been an enormous amount of research by manufacturers, consultants, private organizations, and governmental agencies on rock bolting. It would be impossible to discuss all the methods and philosophies of rock bolting in this paper. Therefore, with the indulgence of the experts, I will give only a very generalized coverage on rock bolting techniques. However, My main purpose is to point out some of the problems of rock bolting in soft rock.

Risk assessment in the mining industry is currently a topic of great interest with risk methodologies being increasingly applied beyond the traditional areas of finance and feasibility to analyses of risks due to various physical hazards including chemical, electrical, mechanical and geotechnical sources. The application of risk analysis and evaluation techniques to the management of personnel safety is being promoted by both industry and regulators but, particularly for geotechnical hazards, often there are inadequate databases for a meaningful quantitative calculation of risk. In Western Australia over the decade 1987 - 1997, the annual fatality rate for underground mining has averaged at approximately 1.3 in 1000 employees with rockfalls/rockbursts accounting for over half of these deaths (Prevention of Mining Fatalities Taskforce, 1997). Recent improvements have been made since this time, perhaps halving the annual fatality rate, mainly due to industry improving ground control measures and implementing various recommendations from the Prevention of Mining Fatalities Taskforce (1997). However there still remain a large number of unknowns when trying to address the complex area of geotechnical risk in mining. Risk calculations require information about the source of the hazard, the people or assets exposed to the hazard (the æelements at riskÆ) and the effects on these vulnerable elements if the hazard actually occurs (the potential consequences). To date, little information has been available on the exposure of mining personnel and equipment to underground hazards other than occupational safety studies on chemicals, heat, dust, etc. This paper concentrates on underground geotechnical risks and presents a data collection and rating system for the exposure of both the underground workforce and equipment to rockfalls and rockbursts. The methodology considers exposure times, personnel protection levels and hazard proximities to give exposure ratings for the major underground mining activities and hence rate different locations within a mine. This exposure methodology is then applied to the workforce and production/ development cycles in an actual WA underground mine, creating a snapshot map of differing levels of personnel exposure across the mine.

THE 1941 fall meeting of the Iron and Steel and the Institute- of Metal, Division held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Philadelphia, during the first three days (Oct. 20-22) of the National Metal Congress was well attended as usual, and the seven technical sessions and the joint round table on order-disorder transformations were this year of considerably more than routine interest. Despite unseasonably warm weather, a scarcity of hotels (there were rumors, apparently well-founded, that , some of the metal man attending the Congress had to stay in tourist camp), and a multiplicity of technical and other ions of the co-operating societies that gave the Congress this year the general air of a three-ring circus the A.I.M.E. sessions attracted audiences that ragged from seventy or eighty up to 350
