Introduction The success of preventive methods for the mitigation of coal mine drainage formation will require a marriage of the minimization of initial coal mine drainage formation, the minimization of toxic fluid formation after toxic material disposal, the minimization of the mobilization and transpor¬tation of formed toxic fluids, and the maximization of the rate of diultion and attenuation of the formed toxic fluids. This paper contributes to the understanding of factors af¬fecting mobilization and dilution and attenuation of formed toxic fluids. When water containing a salt content different from in situ pore water in the soil is passed through a body of soil, the concentration of salts in the outflow will gradually change composition in a manner that depends on the kinds of hydraulic processes that occur in the soil. These processes are molecular diffusion, lateral dispersion, longitudinal dispersion, chemical reactions or exchange, physical adsorp¬tion, and biological retardation. This note considers only the first three processes. These three microscopic processes can be analyzed statistically on a probability basis. Such results, confirmed experimentally, indicate that a tracer introduced instantaneously as a point source will tend to form a Gaussian normal distribution as it moves downstream (Todd, 1964). Dilution During Flow The closed-form soltuion for pulse or instantaneous injec¬tion of a tracer during confined flow in a homogeneous porous medium shows that the maximum tracer concen¬tration at a point in space, x, after the time interval, t*, is given by [ ] where Aa is the effective flow cross-sectional area; A is the column cross-sectional area; a is soil porosity; M is mass of the injected tracer; C is concentration of the tracer in the permeating fluid and is a function of x and t*; D is the longitudinal dispersion coefficient; and va is the interstitial fluid velocity (Klotz and Moser, 1974). Therefore, the following conclusion can be made: • For a medium with a constant longitudinal dispersion coefficient, D, a constant soil porosity, a, a constant cross¬sectional area, A, and a fixed mass of injected tracer, M, Cmax will decrease as the time of peak outflow concen¬tration t* increases. • For a medium with a constant longitudinal dispersion coefficient, D, a constant soil porosity, a, a constant cross¬sectional area, A, a fixed mass of injected tracer, M, and a constant interstitial fluid velocity, va Cmax will decrease as the distance of travel, x, increases. • For a medium of constant cross sectional area, A, con¬stant soil porosity, a, a constant mass of injected tracer, M, and a fixed distance of travel, x, Cmax will decrease as D/va increases. Klotz and Moser (1974) concluded that D is about proportional to no.3 where r) is the kinematic viscosity; D is about proportional to a-3 where a is soil porosity; D in¬creases with increasing grain size; D increases as grains become less spherical; D increases with greater grain rough¬ness and angularity; D increases with increasing uniformity coefficient; and D is significantly affected by grain size and uniformity coefficient. The remaining parameters are not significant. Numerical Simulation Studies Numerical simulation studies were used to investigate the nature of flow and the optimum length of a toxic package within a saturated porous medium of fixed dimensions and configuration (Fig. 1). The subject with which the Council of the American Institute of Mining Engineers has entrusted me is one of much interest. It has been so admirably treated in America by Prof. Carl Barus* that I should have hesitated to deal with it had not the adoption of pyrometric methods in England recently occupied much attention, especially in relation to metallurgical industries and research. I shall endeavor to show what is the present state of our knowledge of practical pyrometry by briefly tracing the history of the efforts which have been made to measure high temperatures. This paper will, therefore, be limited to the consideration of those forms of appliance which have either marked distinct stages of advance, or have remained in use with more or less modification through a considerable range of time. The earliest pyrometers were essentially thermoscopes, and although their graduation presented great difficulties, their importance as affording a means for the measurement of high temperatures has been recognized for centuries. It would be difficult to illustrate this better than by a brief record of the testimony which has from time to time been offered by those who have had to apply the heat of furnaces in research or in industry, and it is mainly for the sake of the light incidentally thrown on the progress of both that the following historical notes are offered. In the eighth century, Geber, the chemist, wrote a treatise on furnaces, and showed that he was familiar with many and varied means of applying heat; but he points to the difficulties that are met with in conducting operations at high temperatures, which he attributed to inability to measure heat, his actual words being: " sed quoniam non est res ignis, quae mensuari possit." t

"IntroductionTHE PROBLEM of producing synthetic liquid fuels from coal and other raw materials is of increasing importance in Canada as well as in the United States. This is due, to a large extent, to the continually increasing demand for gasoline and other liquid products which are now obtained solely from petroleum. The United States has reached a position where domestic supplies of crude petroleum must be augmented by imports and Canada is still a long way from self-sufficiency. In the event of war, there might well be an immediate need to find supplementary sources of liquid fuels. It is, therefore, expedient to consider alternative sources of production now -well in advance of the time when supplies of petroleum may prove inadequate to meet requirements.The purpose of the present paper is to give a short review of the history of liquid fuel production from coal, to describe briefly the research sponsored by the Federal Government on the coal hydrogenation process, and finally to evaluate the present status and future trend of the synthetic fuel industry, with special reference to necessary research work.History of the Oil-From-Coal IndustryThe history -of coal liquefaction began in 1913, in Germany, with the work of Frederick Bergius. Experiment results and operation practice on reutilizing old tailings dumped at SCIM (Shang-chang Iron Mine) of KISCO (Kunming Iron and Steel Corp.) are presented. In a production period over 30 years SCIM dumped about 8 million tons of iron ore tailings. For improving resources utilization instead of wasting, experiments on processing for reutilization of the old tailings are con-ducted. These tailings are fine size fractions of weathered iluvial ores rejected out by classification- des-liming in ore washing and dressing processes, containing TFe 21%~22% in hematite mainly and limonite occasionally. Their particle size distribution, in average, is of 72.26% minus 0.037mm and 30.88% minus 0.005mm. Existence of plenty of micro-fine particles makes the tailings refractory to process, resulting in poor metallurgy. The whole sample of the old tailings without size-classification is fed into experimental process. Slon-100 type high grads WHIMS (wet high intensity magnetic separator) with cyc-pulsing is adopted, which magnetism-focusing rod?s diameter is changed from 3mm into 2mm. Operational conditions of optimizing rougher separation tests are strengthened. An iron concentrate assaying 52.21% Fe at quantity rate of 18.39% and iron recovery of 44.40% is obtained. Operational practice shows that metallurgy and economy of the old tailings treatment are close to what achieved at experiments. It is estimated, therefore, that some 1.4 million tons of this iron concentrate may be recovered from the old tailings. This means that KISCO has moved its key one-step in re-mining and reutilizing the secondary resources, which would be a good demonstration in this industry. This is also of social and economic significance in response to China government?s request on reducing consumption of resources and establishing society with economy for achieving sustainable development.

"The first commercial installation in the mineral industry of the ""Verti-Press"" pressure filter was made by Falconbridge Limited at the Strathcona Concentrator to filter copper concentrate. The filtercake produced contains 6 - 7% H2O, an improvement from the 12 - 13% H2O produced by an internal drum filter, at rates of up to 20 t/hr. A novel slurry feed system incorporates a hose pump and a pressurized slurry accumulator.INTRODUCTIONIncreased copper production from Falconbridge Limited operational mines in the Sudbury Area has exceeded the current refinery capacity. A copper concentrate has been produced to overcome this constraint and has been shipped to custom smelters either as a slurry or as a 12 - 13% moisture filtercake utilizing an internal drum filter.With the treatment of the new Deep Copper Zone from the Strathcona Mine, copper concentrate production was forecast in excess of the installed dewatering capacity. The filtercake was too wet to transport by truck and the custom smelter refused to handle this product at the truck unloading site. The filtercake had to be trucked to a rail spur and transloaded into gondola cars. This system was expensive, incurred unaccountable losses and the concentrate was assessed a moisture penalty.To reduce the concentrate moisture content to permit direct shipment by truck, two basic systems were available; vacuum filter followed by a thermal dryer or a pressure filter. Past experience with the high capital and operating costs of dryers led Falconbridge to closely examine the pressure filter alternative.COPPER CONCENTRATE PRODUCTIONThere are two separate circuits at the Strathcona Mill; one treating nickel ore and the other treating copper ore.The rougher concentrates produced by both circuits are conditioned with lime and cyanide before the copper-nickel separation in a flotation columns. The concentrate consisting of cha lcopyrite with mi nor cubanite is very clean as shown in Table I. Currently 50% of the copper in the plant feed reports as copper concentrate, in the past, this has been as high as 70%."

"The future of the marine mining industry is tied to the resource potential of the seafloor. Everything from economic feasibility, policy decisions and environmental impact assessments to extraction techniques and mining tool design rely on an understanding of the size, composition, and distribution of the deposits. Development and regulatory decisions must ultimately be tied to not only the grade and tonnage estimates of individual deposits or groups of deposits, but also an understanding of the uncertainty of these estimates. Here, we will discuss how seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) deposit grades and tonnages are evaluated, and the sources of the uncertainties associated with these values.TONNAGE UNCERTAINTYFirst-order tonnage (size) estimates for SMS deposits are primarily determined from calculating the volumes of material that occurs as positive bathymetric features on the seafloor. The extent of sulfide mineralization on the seafloor can be determined either from visual surveys (camera-tow, remotely-operated vehicle (ROV), or human-occupied submersible surveys) or from volume calculations of bathymetric features identified from digital elevation models of the seafloor, or a combination of both methods. For bathymetric models to be used to identify deposits in the absence of visual groundtruthing, data resolution of 1 m or less is generally required to confidently identify a feature as being hydrothermal in origin (as opposed to a volcanic or tectonic feature), and therefore near-bottom multibeam data acquisition (e.g., using autonomous underwater vehicle (AUVs) or remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) is required (Fig. 1). Specific characteristics of bathymetric features, such as shape, slope angles and surface roughness can be used to identify features of hydrothermal origin (Fig. 1). However, so far, bathymetric features mapped at a resolution of ~1 m cannot be relied upon to unambiguously distinguish a sulfide mound, and the additional use of multiple AUVmounted sensors, such as magnetometers, which can be used to detect hydrothermal upflow zones, or self-potential sensors, which detect electrical fields related to the oxidation of sulfide minerals, can increase the confidence that a bathymetric feature is indeed a sulfide body, without the need for expensive and time-consuming visual surveys (c.f. Petersen et al., this volume)."

Depletion of coals most suitable for metallurgical fuel has made necessary a general survey of coking coal reserves in the United States. These investigations were begunn 1948 at the joint request of the Munitions Board, Department of Defense, and a number of coal companies. This report, which is one in a series, by counties, describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Harlan County, Ky. From these data it is possible to determine: (a) Which coals, either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation, are chemically suitable under present standards for producing metallurgical coke, (b) Which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced; and (c) Which coals cannot be considered to be potential sources of metallurgical fuel regardless of preparation.

"The solidification behaviors and velocity of atomized droplets during flight is formulated by a mathematical model, in which the concept of transient nucleation is applied. During the flight, the droplet velocity shows a maximum, followed by an inflection phenomenon. The velocity of large droplet is lower than that of small droplet at shorter flight distance, and higher than that of small droplet at longer flight distance. The effect of the gas flow pattern is more significant at longer flight distance than at shorter flight distance at a given flight distance, large droplet has higher temperature than small droplets prior to nucleation. Large droplet has higher nucleation temperature than small droplet. Medium size droplet flies over the shortest flight distance before the nucleation starts. At the end of recalescence, large droplet has less solid fraction than small droplet has.IntroductionTraditional concept of steady state nucleation was used in all the previous models describing the solidification of molten droplets. [1-5] However, during atomization, the solidification rate of the molten metal droplets is very high, and therefore there is very little time for the nucleation event to occur. In the present work, the concept of transient nucleation [6] is considered to model such short nucleation event during solidification of the atomized droplets. The solidification behaviors and velocity of atomized droplets are modeled and the effects of the atomization gas flow pattern are also presented."

"Significant resources have been spent throughout the years in the investigation of production of aluminum by carbothermic reduction. Due to the technological challenges involved, the efforts have not yet resulted in a commercial process. An initiative to overcome issues that prevented previous attempts to succeed was taken by Alcoa through the Advanced Reactor Process. The research program has resulted in technical developments which have resolved many of the previous issues. The knowledge about the process has continuously improved through physical and computer modeling as well as by experimentation at various scales. The technical achievements together with improved process understanding have resulted in a reactor design able to continuously operate the process for several weeks at the time, with hundreds of kilograms of alloy in every tap.IntroductionThe Hall-Heroult process has since its invention in the late 19th century, been essentially the only process used for commercial production of primary aluminum. "Currently mine process studies and geochemical waste characterisation are considered as two interdependent studies, necessary for the development of the mine and inclusion in the environmental impact statement (EIS). Geochemical waste characterisation will utilise the simulated tailings produced by the mine process studies team to understand the behaviour of the tailings, but the two teams rarely integrate these to develop a coherent and agreed final design.Thorough mine waste geochemical assessments can develop processes to minimise environmental harm, resulting in substantial savings in the decommissioning, closure and rehabilitation phases, and may also be able to address changes in mineral processing methods that can result in substantial savings in process inputs, or even recovery of metal concentrates.Based on geochemical waste characterisation, the full cost of waste management can be calculated and incorporated into the costing of milling.  This allows for a more effective evaluation of the metallurgy.  A number of examples are presented in which substantial improvements have been made from the collaboration of both the metallurgical and geochemical teams during planning and the metallurgical team and environmental team during operations.*This paper is only available for individual download. The Karangahake adularia-sericite epithermal gold-silver deposit, located at the southern end of the Waitekauri Corridor, Hauraki Goldfield, occurs as quartz veins with associated alteration haloes. Integrated geophysical studies were undertaken to determine the expression, location, and extent of these alteration zones. Aeromagnetic data show an extensive, magnetic æquietÆ zone over Karangahake and the southern Rahu Ridge that represents a zone of magnetite destruction resulting from hydrothermal alteration. Analytic signal data are used to define the boundary of this zone; the resulting 6 km2 area is elongate north-south with an irregular boundary. A detailed gravity survey over the area reveals a positive residual gravity anomaly, up to 30 gu in amplitude, over the Karangahake deposit. Density measurements on near-surface rocks give low values indicating that the source of this positive gravity anomaly must be deep; possible causative bodies include an igneous intrusion or dense sulfide mineralisation. To the west and east of the host Waipupu Formation, strong gravity gradients of 100 gu/km and 65 gu/km reflect the faulted boundary of the Hauraki Rift, and the edge of the Waihi Basin respectively. High resolution airborne radiometric data define a 2.2 km2 area of potassium enrichment. This area is elongate north-south and has an irregular boundary. It coincides approximately with the centre of the magnetic quiet zone and the peak of the gravity high, and correlates with known areas of intense mineralisation. Anomalously high potassium counts and elevated K/Th ratios correlate with areas of potassic alteration that have undergone K-metasomatism. Underexplored portions of this zone may indicate areas of gold-silver prospectivity. Combined geophysical data therefore reveal the extent of hydrothermal alteration, and the central zone of Kmetasomatism that is most likely to contain orebodies.

JoughinProduction planning is a subject that lies at the interface between the computing centre and mine management. Discus¬sion during this session was thus largely concerned, directly or indirectly, with communication between computing and mining personnel, and as such was relevant to the symposium as a whole.Mr A. Weiss set the tone of this discussion by referring to `user-orientated systems'. He congratulated Mr Burne in this regard, pointing out that his long-term production scheduling program, as a computer system, was similar in approach to the manual system it replaced, and was therefore easily understood by planning engineers. He asked whether the schedule engineer had his 'hands on' the system, to which Mr Burne replied that the engineer did in fact spend several days running alternative schemes through the computer. Mr Weiss commented on the advantage of having terminals on site for this sort of engineer-computer interaction. He also commented on the flexibility of Mr Burne's approach to scheduling and how preferable this was to a one-step optimization package. This was brought home by a question from Mr H. D. Small: Mr Burne's program sometimes found it necessary to temporarily halt an advancing face, and he asked whether the logic of the program could be altered to avoid this (e.g. by suitably slowing down the rate of face advance). Mr Burne replied that it was in fact easier for the planning engineer to sort this problem out manually. The way in which the computer results were presented made it particularly simple for the production engineer to see how to avoid or remedy a stopped face.On the technical side, both Mr Weiss and Mr H. M. Wells questioned Mr Burne on the handling of grade control by his program. From answers by Mr Burne and his colleague Mr K. H. Thomson it emerged that a spot-check on grade every now and then was all that was necessary at Mufulira, and that the idea of actual grade control was more a question of short-term than of long-term planning."

Inadequate understanding and/or assessment of technical and economic risk associated with geological uncertainty are key reasons many mining projects do not achieve forecast profitability. In the last 20 years many new and existing mines have experienced geology related problems, including lower than planned development and production rates, geotechnical/stability issues, unplanned dilution, ore loss, reduced metallurgical performance, environmental management concerns and unbudgeted capital/operating costs. Greater emphasis on the evaluation and communication of uncertainty associated with geological interpretations for feasibility and operations management results in better decision-making. The outcome of better decision-making is more efficient mining yielding enhanced financial returns for the mining industry.

INTRODUCTION It was not very many years ago that tunneling machine manufacturers spent considerable time trying to convince contractors and mine operators of the advantages of mechanical tunnel boring over conventional drill and blast methods. Today there are few doubters left. There is universal agreement that, not only are tunneling machines here to stay, but the ratio of bored rock tunnels to blasted rock tunnels is increasing at an accelerated pace, and within the next twenty years I predict almost all tunnels will be bored by machine. I believe we are today at a very important mile-post in the development of tunnel boring systems. Felix Gaye stated in his recent article (1) "It is important to disseminate between the efficiency of cutting tools and the overall efficiency of the boring operation". Mechanized tunnel boring in the past placed almost total emphasis on the rock cutting and boring ability of the tunneling machine. With advancements in technology and better solutions to the problems of rock fracture, steering control, and structural design, the emphasis today can be placed on the total-system concept. Tunneling machine design, as one of the key elements in the overall system, presents many problems that are not totally solved today. These design problems are, in the most part, not related with rock fracture, but rather with criteria associated with the over-all operation.

Too often in mine planning, maximising revenue-generating material takes precedence over minimising costs. The ability to target both revenue and cost optimisation enables mine plans to fulfil corporate objectives of targeting maximal project net present value (NPV). The state of current mining costs and increasing government regulations in Australia are forcing many mine planners to pay closer attention to cost minimisation. Dumping waste material, which ultimately forms waste landforms, represents a large cost to mining operations. A general mine, with a waste to ore strip ration of 6:1, allocates approximately 32 per cent of total mining costs to waste haulage alone (Gregory, 2003).Most scheduling packages do not dynamically build economic or minimal cost dumps as part of the scheduling process. In most cases, waste dumps are built after a mining schedule has been defined. Automated software is now available which dynamically schedules the pit and waste dumps together. The overall shape of the waste dump is therefore dictated by minimum cost or minimum haulage hours.The purpose of this paper is to compare dynamic pit and waste schedules to traditional methods which apply haulage estimations after defining the mining schedule. This paper includes a case study on the large open pit operation at Tropicana Gold Mine, a joint venture between AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ltd (70 per cent) and Independence Group NL (30 per cent). The operation will focus on mining three large open pits over a 13-year mining life. A total of 397 Mt of waste is mined and directed to multiple destinations including waste dumps, the run-of-mine (ROM) pad and tailings storage facility (TSF) perimeter.Due to these complexities, management of the haulage fleet, especially during the critical period of operation readiness and start-up, is essential. Critical infrastructure such as the TSF and ROM pad will need to be built early and these areas, as well as the sequential development of the waste dump, will need to be developed within the constraints of structured mining fleet build-up.This paper investigates the influences of haulage estimation accuracy and compares traditional approaches for waste planning to automated approaches using EVORELUTIONÖ.CITATION:Graskoski, S, Craig, S and Myburgh, C, 2013. A new office complex is being constructed within 25m of the Hudson River in New Jersey. The project, about 140 m by 100 m, will include 4 basements under the entire footprint. The perimeter was to be secured by a 0.8 m thick diaphragm wall, laterally supported by high capacity tieback anchors to rock. Columns were to be supported on footings or piers to rock at a nominal bearing pressure of 3.8 MPa at depths up to 17m. Although some variation in rock quality was observed in borings, a substantial vertical seam of weathered and/or decomposed rock, 1 to 2 meters wide by as much as 8 meters deep, was encountered during construction necessitating field redesign. In some locations the seam dipped below more competent rock. Footings were redesigned for support on drilled caissons, or soft rock was excavated and replaced with concrete necessitating a reduction in bearing pressure of the footings by one half.

New Zealand SteelÆs Waikato North Head mine, situated at the mouth of the Waikato River, supplies approximately 1.2 million tonnes per annum of titanomagnetite concentrate to the Glenbrook steel mill. The mine draws its fresh water supply from the Waikato River, abstracting approximately 38 000 cubic metres per day. During the concentration process of the ironsand, slimes are liberated into the plant wastewater. The plant wastewater, storm water and groundwater from the mining operation is treated and passed through settling ponds. Around 118 400 cubic metres per day of water are drawn from the recycle settling ponds for use in the concentration plant. Typically a daily average of up to 15 100 cubic metres of the treated water is discharged back to the Waikato River. Since the early 1990s significant improvements have been made to the water treatment at Waikato North Head mine and regularly the mine discharge water quality is similar or better than background river water quality.

The relative stabilities of various REE compounds and differences in vapor pressures are exploited to selectively separate rare earth chlorides, with dysprosium and europium chlorides used as proof-of-concept experimental materials.

Keywords: Wire Drawing, OFHC Copper, Recrystallization, Orientation imaging Microscopy (OIM), Texture inhomogeneity Textural inhomogeneities have been investigated in oxygen free high conducting (OFHC) copper wire drawn at room temperature to a true strain of 2.31, and isothermally annealed at 250°C and 750°C for annealing times ranging from 10 s to 1 hr. Local orientations were mapped by means of orientation imaging microscopy (OIM). The microtexture of the drawn wires showed a strong <111> + weak <100> duplex fiber texture at the inner core, whereas the mid and surface regions had a comparatively weak texture. Annealing at 250°C resulted into a recrystallization which originated from the mid section, proceed towards the surface regions and ends in the inner core. Recrystallization resulted into a strong<100>+weak<111> duplex fiber texture. A similar textural inhomogeneity was observed during short annealing at 750°C. However, prolonged annealing gave rise to abnormal grain-growth that proceed from the inner core to the outer surfaces with a dominant <111> fiber component at the inner region and mixed components of <111>, <100>, and <112> at the outer surfaces.
