Elimination of zinc by the reduction of iron works dusts is examined. The process consists of blending, filtration, drying, balling, preheating and reduction in the rotary kiln. Dust slurries and dry dusts are mixed and stored in slurry basins and the blended slurry is filtered. In the balling process it is important to make green pellets which will withstand Thermal shock in the preheater and rotary kiln. Preheating to about 2000C is preferred to ensure effective use of coke fines in the blast furnace dust. The coke retained in the pellets accelerates the reduction rate. However, at the initial stage of the reduction the pellets become weakened and have to be heated slowly to prevent ring formation. In order to ensure zinc vaporization, pellets should be heated to a temperature of 1100-11500C in the kiln with injection of l ignite fines from the discharge end. Pellets having a degree of metallization of more than 90% and containing less than 0. 1% zinc have been obtained using a test kiln. The final pellet product is intended for use as blast furnace feed. A new plant with a capacity of 20, 000 tonne of dust per month is now under construct- ion and will be in operation next year.

There is a lack of information concerning the movements of water on the continental shelf, particularly with regard to data obtained regularly over significant periods of time. The Horace Lamb Centre for Oceanographic Research has recently deployed data acquisition systems on the sea bed off the coast of South Australia to record tides, swell, and ocean temperatures. Some of these early records are described. The swell data are pertinent to future offshore operations with drilling rigs, barges, and other equipment, while the temperature variations give evidence of significant bottom currents, apart from those due to swell.

Authorities that regulate environmental issues pertaining to industrial wastes in South Africa regard landfill disposal as the only effective environmental management option for slag and other inorganic by-products from the ferro-alloy industry. Metallurgical slags are widely utilised in civil engineering and construction applications in other countries in the world and in line with the overall philosophy of conserving mineral and other natural resources, these materials should be assessed for the possibility of resource recovery, recycling, reclamation, direct re-use or alternative uses. This presentation describes a risk-based approach for the assessment of by-products from the ferro-alloy industry for alternative use. Once a by-product from an industrial process has been identified for alternative use, its intended use would be defined, but it will not be possible to control its actual use or misuse in society, nor will it be possible to control its fate during the application life cycle. In the interest of protection of human health and the environment, potential risks associated with the handling and uses of a material throughout its life cycle therefore have to be quantified. The assessment has to include both human health and ecological risks and must cover the entire life cycle of a product, from its production up to its end-of-life disposal. The presentation introduces the concept of tiered risk assessment and demonstrates how this applies in the overall assessment of by-products from metallurgical industry sector for safe use in society.

A sample of crude copper powder produced by the CLEAR Process was refined by dissolution and recovery in sulfate media using the Parker Process. The Parker Process offers an alternative method of copper recovery to electrorefining and allows a range of Eh and pH conditions to be used to provide further discrimination of impurities. High purity copper powder was recovered by the Parker Process even in the presence of added impurities when the Eh and pH was maintained near constant throughout the refining step.

Laboratory settling and filtration testing was conducted on wet processed fly ash in order to determine the applicability of conventional dewatering techniques to reduce the moisture content prior to drying. Settling tests showed that acceptable clarity (<1.5 g/l suspended solids) could be achieved after as little as 6 minutes of settling. After settling to a consistency of 40 weight % solids, continuous laboratory vacuum filtration testing produced a cake containing below 20% moisture with throughput exceeding 150 lb/ft2/hr.

In both laboratory flotation experiments and from analysing the composition of the lead concentrate at the Boliden Tara lead-zinc mine in Ireland, it has been found that F-250 may replace cyanide as a pyrite depressant. Replacement or reduction of the cyanide consumption is highly desirable from a safety perspective given the toxicity of cyanide. Scrutiny of results from the plant trial indicate that F-250 is less efficient as a cyanide depressant when the flotation feed contains high levels of pyrite. Statistical analysis of the results does not capture this trend, illustrating a need to collect more data at higher pyrite ore levels. A recent model proposed for biopolymer-induced pyrite depression is reviewed and discussed next to the suggested mechanism for pyrite depression via cyanide. Review of the interactions causing pyrite depression point to different manners in achieving depression. In light of the less efficient F-250 pyrite depression at high pyrite levels, it is speculated if the two depressants may act synergistically at high levels of pyrite in the feed. Pure tin and Sn-0.5pct Pb ingots have been frozen unidirectionally from the base. For quiescent melts that were initially undercooled, a transition from lower eqlciaxed structure to an upper columnar structure is found in the alloy ingots. Columnar to equi-axed back to columnar transitions are observed in superheated alloy ingots, but no such equiaxed band is observed impure tin. The reproducible equiaxed band is associated with a thermal undercooling followed by a recalescence. This undercooling is <5"C, whereas the critical (maximum obtainable) under-cooling for both the pure tin and the alloys used is -20°C. A similar undercooling is observed at the same position in the pure tin ingots, although in this case no clear transition in structure can be seen. The structure of the pure tin ingots is either entirely columnar or mixed columnar-equiaxed. A consideration of the detailed thermal history of the ingots indicates that the ingot macrostructures are determined by the occurrence of a local therlnal undercooling in conjunction with nuclei multiplication and transport mechanisrris. GENERALLY it is found that a pure metal ingot solidifies so as to produce an entirely columnar structure. Frequently an alloy ingot is found to have a columnar outer zone and an equiaxed central portion. Early systematic work to examine the factors controlling the formation of the equiaxed structure was reported by Northcott&apos; who showed that, for copper alloys frozen unidirectionally with a given ingot practice, the alloying element influenced the length of columnar crystals and the extent of the equiaxed structure. Northcott showed that alloys with a wider freezing range more readily produced the equiaxed structure. The nucleation process can be important in producing equiaxed structures; frequently an alloy which readily solidifies with an entirely columnar structure will produce an entirely equiaxed structure when a nucleating agent is added to the melt.&apos; The formation of the equiaxed structure was attributed by Winegard and chalmers3 to the presence of constitutional supercooling; that is, a region of liquid in front of the growing solid could have a temperature below its equilibrium liquidus temperature. Thus, with a small enough temperature gradient in the liquid, it was suggested that the presence of constitutional supercooling may be sufficient to bring about the nuclea-tion necessary for the formation of an equiaxed structure. Although this explanation is plausible, and may be relevant in many ingots, Walker has described an experiment&apos; for which constitutional supercooling seems to be an unlikely cause of nucleation. A Ni-20 pct Cu alloy, repeatedly undercooled more than 50"C, was crystallized and found to show the typical colum-nar-equiaxed structure. The separation between the liquidus and the solidus for the alloy is 40°C. Thus, in this experiment the nucleation required for the formation of the equiaxed structure must have come about in some other way than by the nucleation catalysis constitutional supercooling hypothesis. Chalmers has suggested more recently5 that nuclei (in a typical ingot) are present immediately after pouring and are prevented from redissolving by the constitutional supercooling effect. More recently Uhlman, Seward, Jackson, and ~unt&apos; have shown direct evidence using ice and organic materials that freeze dendritically that the "remelt mechanism" may be an extremely effective crystal multiplication process during the freezing of ingots under conditions involving dendritic growth. JSlia" experimentally demonstrated the detachment of dendrite arms. chernov14 has analyzed the dendrite arm detachment process as a coarsening phenomena driven by the minimization of interphase area. Katta-mis and ~lemings" working with undercooled steel melts give evidence supporting this mechanism. Mechanisms of dendrite arm detachment such as those assisted by convection are believed to be the origin of the macrostructures obtained in this study. This study makes no attempt to distinguish the relative contributions of these mechanisms. The object of the present work was to obtain accurate temperature measurements during the solidification of an ingot and to correlate these measurements with the formation of equiaxed grains in the resulting ingot structures. Similar previous work is very limited. The measurements carried out by Northcott are neither sufficiently extensive nor sufficiently accurate for any interpretation. Plaskett and winegard7 carried out experiments on A1-Mg alloys in which they observed values of the temperature gradient, G, in the liquid and rate of freezing, R (for a given alloy solute content Co), at the transition from a columnar to an equiaxed structure. They reported that equiaxed crystals were produced at values of G/G approximately proportional to the solidus composition. Similar experiments using Pb-Sn alloys carried out by £111011" showed a linear relation between G/R and the solidus composition. However, the thermocouples were in the mold wall rather than in the melt and, in one case, ingot surfaces were examined. There is ambiguity in the meaning of the values of G and R measured in all these experiments. APPARATUS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys were prepared by induction melting 99.999 pct Sn and 99.999 pct Pb to form a Sn-0.5 wt pct Pb alloy in air in a graphite crucible and casting into a cylindrical graphite mold 6 in. long, 1 in. in diarn , and with a & in. wall thickness. Numerous different instruments and techniques have been developed for the purpose of measuring rock stress and stress changes around excavations. The interpretation of the output from many of these instruments has often been problematic. This paper covers the research performed in attempting to analyze one particular stress measuring instrument called the Borehole Platened Flatjack (BPF) . The approach used in this analysis was to combine the analytical solution for the displacements around a borehole and the analytical solution for the bore- hole-platen interaction with the empirical stiffness behavior of the flatjack. The resulting model of the BPF response was then verified using measured laboratory data with very good results. In addition, techniques for applying the method to the field are briefly discussed. The major accomplishments of this comprehensive modeling and testing program are; 1) the establishment of the critical installation and site parameters of the hydraulic pressure cell and 2) the development of a systematic procedure for calibrating the cell based on the given values of these critical parameters.

The Gladstone Hill area hosts epithermal veins similar to those at Martha Hill, which is less than one kilometre away. There are several vein types in the Gladstone Hill area including (1) pyrite-marcasite, (2) quartz, (3) base metal sulfide, and (4) calcite. Pyrite veinlets formed first, whereas the quartz and carbonate veins formed later. The base metal sulfide vein occurs at depth and is predominantly comprised of quartz and chlorite intimately intergrown with pyrite, sphalerite, galena, and rare chalcopyrite. Platy calcite and massive calcite veinlets were the last vein types to form. Several vein textures occur in the Gladstone Hill area, including colloform and crustiform banding, lattice-bladed, zonal, comb, massive and feathery textures. Crustiform banded veins are the dominant texture and contain variable gold-silver grades. Colloform banded veins consist of ubiquitous quartz and minor chalcedony with gold grades as high as 60 g/t. The lattice-bladed texture forms from the deposition of calcite, which has been replaced in many samples by quartz, indicating that boiling and later cooling has taken place. Unreplaced platy calcite only occurs at deeper levels (&gt;300 m). Zonal and comb textures are preserved in quartz and late-stage amethyst veins. Feathery textures within quartz are commonly associated with breccias and some colloform banding, and with significant Au-Ag grades. &nbsp; The homogenisation temperatures (Th) of primary and secondary inclusions in quartz, amethyst and platy calcite range from 166 to 274¦C, with salinities &lt;1.3 wt% NaCI equiv. The presence of vapor-dominated inclusions and primary fluid inclusions in platy calcite suggests that boiling occurred intermittently throughout deposition. The veins formed under a relatively flat lying paleowater table that occurred 280 - 300 m above sea level. The fluids involved in vein formation were alkali chloride in composition and low in CO2.

"Western Mines Limited produces gold, silver, copper, lead and zinc from a number of Paleozoic volcanogenic deposits near Buttle Lake on Vancouver Island. The deposits were emplaced along a series of submarine linear volcanic ridges that extended for at least 6,000 metres in a northwesterly direction.Rock types mapped include: andesitic, dacitic and rhyolitic flow s and volcanic breccias; detrital breccias, tuffs and hematitic silts; black and green cherts; and a variety of dykes and sills, including quartz porphyry and diorite. Orebodies are associated invariably, and in places intimately, with quartzsericite schist and rhyolitic rocks. The ore is complex, varying in mineralogy and tenor both within each deposit and from one deposit to another.Recent studies have increased our knowledge of the structure and left no doubt that the orebodies were deposited both within the throats of the linear vents and on paleoslopes adjacent to these vents.IntroductionWestern Mines Limited operates an 850-tonne-per-day mine, located 85 km south of Campbell River, B.C. The mine is at approximately 400 metres elevation, near the south end of Buttle Lake on Vancouver Island (Fig . I). It has operated since early 1967 and produced 3,650,000 tonnes with an average grade of 1.9 g (0.06 oz) gold, 93 g (3.0 oz) silver, 1.6 per cent copper, 1.0 per cent lead and 7.5 per cent zinc per tonne by the end of 1978. Current reserves are 1,157,000 tonnes of 2.7 g (0.09 oz) gold, 117 g (3 .8 oz) silver , 1.2 per cent copper, 1.2 per cent lead and 8.0 percent zinc per tonne (December 31, 1978).Ore from one zone, known as Myra High-Grade, is mined and milled separately because of its grade. Ore milled prior to December 31,1978, plus reserves, 180,715 tonnes of6.6 g (0.21 oz) gold, 554.5 g (17 .7 oz) silver, 0 .8 per cent copper, 3.2 per cent lead and 10.6 per cent zinc are included in the figures listed in the preceding paragraphs."

Background- History The most significant change in mining since the late 1970?s has been the emergence of very large scale mining operations , which have been developed to ensure profitability with relatively low grade ores. These large tonnage operations have resulted in the development of larger unit sized machines in all operations of beneficiation, solid-liquid separation and dewatering. Often only a few flotation lines are installed and tonnages up to 25 ktpd and beyond are not uncommon. The increased throughputs have led to the development of circular, reactor type tank designs. The reactor cell system is the most up to date flotation cell design to utilise the principles of circular cell design. The Svedala DV mechanism was specially developed to suit the RCS machine giving good solids handling characteristics and excellent metallurgical performance. Development of UG2 ore type flotation equipment The equipment was developed and optimised by Svedala process from 1995. A higher energy specification was requested by industry. This amounted to 3kW/m3 for installed volume. Existing designs were at 1.5kW/m3. Hence various modifications were required to achieve the required power input. The first 50m3 machines were installed and developed at Impala Platinum?s UG2 circuit over a one year period. Once reliability and performance was achieved, over 300 large volume flotation cells were installed at Anglo Platinum and Lonmin operations as well. Pilot Plant Development The Impala Platinum High Energy pilot plant was commissioned in 2002 and had an installed power exceeding 5kW/m3. It was operated for over a year at the tailings dam booster station and was fundamental to the large scale scavenging plant design. All experience in overcoming mechanical and operational problems was applied in scale up design principles. A very robust mechanism was designed to accommodate the additional power input from installed motors, as well as the high SG (>1.5) of the feed source. The pilot plant flowsheet is shown in the figure below.

"Abstract - Large differences in gold content between rock fragments or small volumes of unbroken rock, commonly referred to as the nugget effect, are related to sample and subsample weights, crushing and pulverizing sizes, and density, shape and size distribution of gold grains. Gy’s sampling theory, which relates gold grain characteristics to sample weight, fragment size, and error, provides a method of estimating a sampling constant that quantifies deposit characteristics that contribute to the nugget effect.Sampling control tests provide methods for determining the sampling constant. Sampling control charts, comprising nomographs that relate sample weight, error and particle size, use the sampling constant to optimize sample weights and comminution sizes, and to minimize the variability introduced by incorrect or inadequate sampling and sub-sampling procedures. The sampling constant is useful in classifying ores into arbitrary categories according to expected sampling difficulties. Spatial variations in the sampling constant can be used to aid in defining ore types for modeling geological domains, which should have unique sampling protocols. Examples that illustrate the relationship between the sampling constant and expected sampling problems, and the spatial variation of the sampling constant, are given for various deposits. Case histories of sampling programs are presented.Quality control procedures consist of monitoring sample contamination amd accuracy and precision of analytical results. Accuracy, precision and contamination are monitored by including standards, duplicates and blanks into batches of samples being analyzed. Analytical results of standards and blanks are plotted on a batch-and-time basis with control lines at plus or minus two/three standard deviations as confidence limits of the accepted round-robin value. Examples are given that illustrate a laboratory system in statistical control and the various types of problems encountered when interpreting quality control data. These include sample transcription errors, degradation, contamination, sampling errors, detection limit problems, instrumental drift, lack of statistical control, laboratory bias, procedural problems and data tampering.Where bias is negligible, precision, as a function of concentration, can be obtained from duplicates using the Thompson-Howarth precision algorithm, which also allows calculation of the practical detection limit. Examples are given that illustrate variations in precision, with grain size, for different types of duplicates, as well as mineralogical changes and sampling errors."

THE Pocahontas coal field comprises the area in Tazewell County, Va., and Mercer and McDowell Counties, W. Va., in which Nos. 3 and 4 Pocahontas seams of bituminous coal are mined. It is a mountainous region with ridges rising 300 to 1000 ft. (91 to 305m.) above the very narrow valleys and, except for some poorly kept farms along the tops of the ridges and the area occupied by the mining and coking plants and villages, is wooded throughout. First shipments were made from Pocahontas in 1883. There are now, about 100 mines, 95 per cent. of which are drift mines. At the end of 1920, approximately 298,000,000 gross tons of coal had been produced and 35,000 acres of coal mined. No. 3 seam is from 4 to 10 ft. (1.2 to 3 m.) thick, but the change is gradual and the thickness fairly uniform in any particular locality. It has a streak of bone, about 2 in. (5 cm.) thick, io which the coal adheres on both sides. In parts of the field this bone is replaced by hard slate, usually from 2 to 4 in. thick. The seam has a slate or fireclay bottom and a draw-slate top. No. 4 seam is from 65 to 80 ft. (19.8 to 24 m.) above No. 3 seam, and of minable section only in the western part of the field. It is from 3 to 8 ft. thick and has two streaks off bone, each from 1 to 2 in. thick. It has a fireclay or slate bottom and is overlaid by from 4 to 24 in. of a laminated coal and slate, locally termed "black rash," which is separated from the coal seam by about 3 in. of slate. This "black rash" averages about 25 per cent. ash, but contains some clean coal. The coal in both seams is quite soft. Cleavage sufficiently well defined to exert an influence on the mining is rare. Overlying strata are slates, shales, and sandstones, the sandstones predominating, extending from .30 to 1000 ft. above No. 3 seam. The strata directly above the. draw slate of No. 3 seam, or "black rash" of No., 4 seam, and up to the first sandstone are usually slates or shales, about 10 ft. thick over the

The aqueous chemistry of niobium and tantalum compounds with hydrofluoric acid is a mature field of investigation. In contrast, very little attention has been paid to reactions of these compounds in non-aqueous environments. Similarly, reactions of elemental fluorine with niobium and tantalum compounds have received little more than cursory attention in literature. This work discusses the isothermal reaction kinetics derived from thermogravimetry, using a less redundant approach than is currently the standard. We also discuss the most likely kinetic models for this reaction.

DURING the war there was introduced a new higher strength aircraft alloy designated 75S.1,2.3 The properties of this alloy assure extensive applications in both military and commercial aircraft. It is therefore important to understand its limitations as well as advantages. The properties of 75S alloy in the heat-treated tempers, like those of many other aluminum alloys, are affected by the rate of quenching. In general, low quenching rates tend to cause low strengths and to adversely affect the resistance to corrosion. Commercial quenching procedures are usually sufficiently rapid to permit the development of maximum properties. However, in the center of heavy sections, such as large rolled and extruded shapes, the quenching rates may not be rapid enough to develop maximum strength or resistance to corrosion. The investigations of 75S alloy described herein reveal the most critical range of temperature and the effects of quenching sheet and extrusions at different rates through that temperature range, on the tensile properties and resistance to corrosion. PROCEDURE Preparation of Specimens Sheet specimens (3 in. by 9 in.) were prepared from a commercial lot of 75S "as rolled" sheet (0.064 in. thick). The composition° was as follows: Weight Percentage Cu Mn Mg Zn Cr Al with Normal Impurities 1.64 0.16 2.58 5.66 0.27 Remainder The specimens employed for the determination of the time-temperature relations during quenching of sheet were prepared by the following procedure: the hot junction of a 28-ga. iron-constantan thermoelement (asbestos insulated) was brazed to a thin strip of aluminum which was in turn brazed into the end of a 3/16 in. i.d. by ¼ -in. o.d. by 30 in. long aluminum protection tube. Before brazing, the tube was flattened to 0.064 in. thickness over the junction and adjacent lead wires for a distance of 1 ½ in. The flattened end of the tube was fitted into a slot cut from one edge to the center of the 3 in. by 9 in. by 0.064 in. sheet and brazed into place. The brazed joint was dressed to the thickness of the sheet and the entire specimen buffed to approximately the brightness of "as rolled" material. Because of the brazing operations required, these specimens were prepared using 3S alloy. For the investigation of quenching rates in heavy sections, there were used 75S extrusions which had compositions similar to that of the sheet. The specimens consisted of 14 in. lengths of ¾ in., 2 in., 3 in. and 4 in. diam cylindrical rods and a roughly rectangular extruded section which was approximately 4 in. by 7 ½ in. Una muy común mala práctica en minería subterránea es no monitorear y reducir los consumos energéticos relacionados a los sistemas de ventilación auxiliar por considerarse de baja cuantía, sin embargo, existen estudios que demuestran que el coste económico que afrontan las corporaciones mineras en materia de ventilación auxiliar puede variar entre el 60 y 70 % de su consumo energético total de ventilación.

This study emphasizes the importance of understanding the factors that influence the throwing of flyrock in mining operations, a significant hazard to both workers and nearby structures. Moreover, it highlights how blasting engineers, when estimating flyrock occurrences and their travel distance, typically rely on input parameters such as powder factor (PF), hole length (HL), subdrill (SD), spacing (S), hole diameter (D), burden (B) and stemming length (ST), while overlooking crucial factors like velocity of detonation (VOD) and charge per bank cubic meter (CPBCM). Through analysis using support vector machine (SVM) modeling in MATLAB, the study underscores the impact of including or excluding VOD and CPBCM on flyrock throw distance.

"The electrostatic charge on spray droplets of ionic surfactant solutions and coal particles was measured and the results were correlated with the dust collection efficiency. When various surfactant were added, the magnitude of the droplet charge increased significantly and it was observed to be a function of surfactant type and concentration. The concentration of maximum droplet charge coincided with surfactant concentration where maximum collection efficiency was observed for these surfactants. Particles of coal also carried substantial amount of charge magnitude of which seemed to be a function of coal rank.Based on the results presented in this paper, it was concluded that ionic surfactant primarily act as a strong electrostatic charge inducer for droplets. Due to interactions between these highly charged droplets and naturally charged particles, the efficiency of droplet-particle collisions play a primary role when compared to the wetting and engulfment phenomenon which could only follow a successful collision. INTRODUCTIONWater spray are widely used to suppress airborne dust in mine atmospheres (Walton and Woolcock, 1960; Kobrick, 1970; Hamilton, 1974; Jayaraman et al., 1986). Several investigators have considered the use of surfactants to enhance the effectiveness of water sprays especially for difficult to wet particles such as those of coal (Glanville and Wightman, 1979). The capture of dust particles by water droplets involves droplet-particle collisions, adhesion of particles to droplets, and engulfment of particles into droplets. Surfactants affect these sub processes through their influence on droplet charge, surface tension, and wetting. The last two mechanism have been thoroughly studied in recent years (Walker et al., 1952; Cohen and Rosen, 1981; Glenville and Haley, 1982; Chander et al., 1988; 1991). However, little attention has been paid to the role of electrical charge on particles and droplets on the collision and adhesion of spray droplets and dust particles."
