Many maintenance managers find it difficult to justify investments in maintenance improvement initiatives. In part, this is due to a tendency by mine managers to regard maintenance purely as a cost centre, and not as a process able to influence productive capacity and profit. It is also hindered by a lack of alignment between commonly used maintenance performance measures and key business drivers, and the lack of formal business training amongst maintenance professionals. With this in mind, a model to assist maintenance managers in evaluating the benefits of maintenance improvement projects was recently formulated. The model considers four cost saving dimensions. These are: 1. reduction in the cost of unplanned repairs and maintenance,2. increased or accelerated production and/or sales,3. spares inventory reduction, and4. reduction in over-investment in physical assets and operating costs. This paper discusses the application of this model and a number of numerical examples are given to justify investments in maintenance improvement projects having varying objectives.

THE BULOLO gold-dredging operations were described at some length by Frank W. Griffin at the Oct. 11 meeting of the San Francisco Section. This enterprise is on the island of New Guinea, about 1800 miles north of Sydney, Australia. The area in which the present placers exist originally was German territory but later the location was taken over by Australians. Gold was discovered in 1923 by prospectors who required 8 to 9 days to pack into the country over severe mountain trails. In 1926 a rich discovery was made on Edie Creek and in 1927 the deposit on the Bulolo River was discovered.

Due to the growing share of electrical cars, the use of lithium ion batteries significantly increased. Recycling of these batteries is essential to safely dispose hazardous materials as well as to recover valuables (Cu, Ni, Co, etc.). In order to optimise the recycling process, accurate information is required on the slag phase equilibria for battery smelting. The slag is a multi-component system containing alumina from the battery cases, silica and lime from fluxes, and manganese and lithium from the electrode materials. The present study accurately determined the phase equilibria in the "MnO"-Al2O3-SiO2 sub-ternary system at metal alloy saturation. Particular attention was given to the accuracy and reliability of the final results by highlighting the different reaction pathways, mass transfer- and reaction mechanisms taking place in the system during experiments. This attention enabled improved experimental methodology and measurements. Based on the present study, further measurements will be undertaken in the quaternary "MnO"-Al2O3-CaO-SiO2 system at low "MnO" concentrations, which closely represents the future recycling industrial slags.

Coal has been mined in the Kailuan mining area for more than 130 years. The remaining reserves consist of, in large part, coals that would have been considered economically unminable or technically not feasible by the previous generations. Some of the current operations have to resort to overmining because the lower seams had been extracted in the past. This paper deals with the feasibility and proper layout of mining roadways of overmining carried out in the No. 5 seam of Qianjiaying coal mine of Kailuan mining area using numerical and physical simulation. FLAC2D was used to investigate the characteristics of stress and displacement in the overburden after extraction of the lower seams. It also analyzed the proper layouts of gateroads in the upper seams, i.e. locating them in the stress-relief zone of the gob so that their stability can be easily maintained. In addition, a two-dimensional physical model was constructed for investigation of damages to the upper seams due to mining of the lower seams. Finally, based on the results of investigations, proper gateroads layout was designed and successful extraction was implemented for panel 1357 in the No.5 seam.

"The Marconaflo slurry system was originally developed to reduce costs and solve technical problems in the marine transport of mineral cargoes. In the short time since its inception, it has been found to offer economies and advantages for land-based and in-plant materials handling. This efficient method of reclaiming and slurrying particulate materials at very high pulp densities can be directly utilized in a wide variety of mineral process systems. These include: storage-reclaim applications, where even cohesive, compacted materials can be reclaimed from settled storage ""on demand""; the growing number of hydrometallurgical operations wherein slurried materials are processed to extract or yield metals; certain applications associated with pyrometallurgical treatment; and as a means of augmenting the performance of conventional mineral dressing equipment, such as thickeners.INTRODUCTIONIn the continuing effort to lower costs of producing minerals and extracting metals, the field of handling and transportation often receives too little attention from those engaged in the mining and winning of ores and metals. This comment, which pertains to ferrous and non-ferrous as well as to non-metallic producers, is especially pertinent to products having relatively low value, where transport costs can be a major portion of the delivered selling price to the minerals receiver.One method which was developed recently for the purpose of reducing costs and solving technical problems in marine transport and handling of mineral cargoes is the MARCONAFLO slurry system. A notable feature of this system is its versatility; in addition to its use in marine transport1*, some of its diverse applications have included the mining and reclaiming of tailings2 and in-plant materials handling3. As the concept and fundamentals of this system have been well explained previously4,5, the mechanics of the system will not be elaborated upon here. Rather some specific ways in which MARCONAFLO can be applied to processing and extraction will be explored."

The current design method for soil-cement (SC) columns improved soft clayey ground under the highway embankments assumes a slip circle failure surface shearing through the columns and the soils using a weighted average shear strength. However, the results from the laboratory centrifuge model test and numerical analysis indicate that in many cases, the SC columns fail by bending. Some researchers have proposed methods for estimating the maximum embankment loading for bending failure of SC columns, but those methods have limitations in correctly considering the internal shear stresses or not applicable for the group SC column improvement. Numerous model embankments on SC columns have been simulated by three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis (FEA) and the mechanism of bending failure and the magnitude of the bending moment in the SC columns under embankment load has been investigated. Based on the simulated results, the design method for the estimation of the bending failure of floating SC columns has been proposed. The predicted results from the proposed method agreed with the existing field condition of one embankment in Saga, Japan reported in the literature in terms of the stability of columns. Hence the proposed method can be used for the design of floating SC columns in the soft ground.

There are new applications growing at a very strong pace (such as battery alloy), applications that are now penetrating their target markets with significantly increased growth rates (such as bonded NdFeB), and some applications that became more complex requiring much more sophisticated products (such as catalysis). Rare Earth producers have to spend significant ressources in order to monitor the market trends in order to predict the demand and then adjust their raw material mix. Even though there is a greater diversity of raw material available, there is still some Rare Earth elements that are in excess, while other are just in balance. As a consequence rare earth producers invest heavily in R&D in order to develop new applications for these excess elements.

A laboratory investigation has been made of the effects of mud hydraulics upon the formation and erosion of mud filter cakes. The tests were conducted to simulate drilling conditions as nearly as possible. The formation of mud filter cake in a drilling well does not proceed at a uniform and unbroken rate. Instead, the rate of cake accumulation depends upon whether or not the mud is being circulated. If the mud column is quiescent, filter cake formation is a smooth function of the filtration characteristics of the system. If the mud is being circulated filter cake formation depends not only upon the filtration characteristics of the mud but also upon the erosive action of the flowing mud column Filter cakes formed during continuous mud circulation were observed to reach an equilibrium thickness after several hours' circulation. Mud circulation was maintained at a constant volumetric rate throughout each experiment. The fluid velocity at equilibrium cake thickness was dependent upon the thickness of the filter cake. Muds having exceptionally high water loss deposited thick filter cakes in spite of very high eroding velocities. The muds having good filtration characteristics deposited thin filter cakes at equilibrium circulating velocities well within tile range of those in a drilling well. It was observed that filter cakes deposited during stagnant filtration were quite difficult to erode by mud circulation. The - rate of crosion computed from the rate of filtrate accumulation after equilibrium cake thickness had been reached was in reasonable agreement with the rate of erosion obtained by direct observation. Continuous mud circulation usually caused the permeability of the filter cake to decrease with time. INTRODUCTION Many of the difficulties encountered during tile drilling of a well have been attributed to the loss of water from the mud and the attendant deposition of solids upon the walls of the hole. Past experience has shown that a reduction of the filtration rate of the drilling fluid eliminates or greatly reduces these difficulties. Definite filtration requirements, however, are hard to establish for a given set of conditions. This is due. in part, to the fact that the usual filtration test performed upon mud doe? not simulate well conditions as closely as desirable. The filtration characteristics of a mud are customarily determined by means of the standard low-pressure API wall-building tester.' In this instrument a filter cake is deposited upon a horizontal bed under a pressure differential of 100 psi. The rnud is quiescent during the filtration period. In actual practice. mud filtration occurs within a well under quite different conditions. One of the major differences is that mud flows upward across the filter bed as the filter cake forms. This undoubtedly produces a change in the filter cake which cannot be reflected in the results of the API test. The laboratory work described in this paper had as its primary objective a better understanding of the influence of mud circulation upon the thickness and ,characteristics of the filter cakes deposited under conditions similar to those existing in a drilling well. ANALYSIS OF PROBLEM Once a permeable formation is penetrated by the bit, filtrate from the mud flows into the formation. 'he mud solids plaster against the walls of the hole, forming a filter cake. If the mud column is stagnant, that is, if it is not being circulated. the filter cake will increase in thickness until the hole is filled. Prior to the time that the hole is filled, the thickness of filter cake existing at any given time will be a function of the filtration characteristics of the mud, the temperature, and the pressure differential. The effects of these variables have been investigated in the past for both flat bed filtration2'3 and for radial filtration.' When the mud is circulated in a hole in which a filter cake i. being deposited. some of the solids that would ordinarily deposit in the filter cake will be carried away by the eroding action of the mud. This will limit. filter cake thickness. Some work has been done to determine the effect of flow upon the filtration rate in a circulating mud system' but little work has been done upon the factors which determine the filter cake thickness existing in a circulating system. On first sight it would appear that the major factors controlling filter cake formation in a circulating system should be: 1. The rate of deposition of solids from the mud. 2. The erosive force that the flowing mud exerts upon the filter cake. 'A. The erodabilitv of the filter cake. 4. Any change in filter cake characteristics attributable to the scouring action of the mud. This paper presents the results of s study involving characterization of ground subsidence of abandoned lead-zinc mines in northeastern Oklahoma. Two coordinated efforts were undertaken: (1) collection and analysis of available data such as driller's logs, geologic cross-sections, structure contour naps and stratigraphic sections, and (2) development of a numerical (finite element) technique for prediction of collapse and mine subsidence. An in-depth analysis of a major collapse in the region was conducted. The factors which contributed to this collapse were identified.

TO obtain the best results from hammer drills, close attention must be paid to two factors in drill maintenance, which are of equal importance; one is lubrication, the other is the shank. With the exception of stoping drills, most modern rock drills require both oil and grease. The oil ports are in the lubricator, on or behind the hammer cylinder; the grease port for the lubrication of the chuck sleeve and rotating mechanism is on the chuck end. Ordinary machine oil is not adapted to rock drills; a heavier more gelatinous oil such as castor machine oil or liquid grease should be used. The lubricators should be filled once for every 12 or 14 ft. (3.5 to 4 m.) of hole drilled. Grease guns should be used to fill the port in the chuck end once a shift; a medium (No. 3) grease is well adapted to this purpose. Hard grease must not be put into the lubricators, as it will not flow through that part. Contrary to the popular belief, oiling a machine once or twice a shift does not provide sufficient lubrication; the drills should be oiled once for every 12 or 14 ft. of hole drilled. The rotating handle of a stoping drill is an oil reservoir and is provided with a port for oiling. The rotating handle is packed with wick-ing, or similar material, which causes the oil to feed slowly from the handle to the other parts of the machine. Stoping drills require oil at least twice a shift; lighter oils than castor, such as Arctic Ammonia, may be used. Drills used in shaft sinking can be oiled satisfactorily by placing a good-sized, drop, sight lubricator on the station above the sinking operations and connecting it with the air-line supplying the sinking drills. If this lubricator is properly filled and adjusted, a uniform oiling of the sinking machines will be effected without the necessity of oiling the drills individually. The grease end should be filled at the station or surface before each drilling period. The shift boss should see that the machines are greased and also that the lubricators at the station function properly. The life of the air-drill hose is somewhat shortened by this method, as oil attacks the inner tube; but as some oil is always present in the compressed air, this is not a serious objection to the method.

The Cu/Al composite wires have been widely used in cable industry. Especially in the development of aerospace, the light weight character of wires is particularly important. The wires are fabricated by a drawing process and heat treatment. Mechanical and electrical properties are measured and analyzed. The bending behavior is studied by scanning electron microscope. INTRODUCTION Cu/Al composite is a typical bimetallic composite that has been used in plenty of fields such as automobile and aerospace. The composite has the advantages of excellent conductivity as well as low weight, which cannot be obtained from single copper or aluminum. Industrial products of Cu/Al composite include Cu/Al composite joints (Uscinowicz, R., 2013), Cu/Al bimetallic sheets (Li, X. et al., 2011), Cu/Al flat bar (Wu, Y. & Liu, X. & Xie, J., 2014) and CCA wires (Ahmed N., 1978). CCA wires refer to the composite wires that copper layer concentrically coated on the surface of aluminum core conductor, implementing solid combination of two metals on the interface and forming an integral. At present, the aircraft cable generally use copper or copper alloy conductor, which makes the wire in the aircraft occupy a considerable proportion due to the large density of copper. Therefore, the use of Cu/Al composite wires instead of copper wires for weight loss, is of great significance to the development of aerospace technology industry. Heat treatment is an indispensable procedure to improve plasticity during cold working process, which is of great importance to preparation of wires (Wang, Q. et al., 2008). During the heat treatment, the Intermetallic Compounds (IMCs) are inevitable formed at the contact area of Cu/Al due to the occurrence of diffusion (Lee, S. et al., 2012). According to the results of former researchers, kinds of IMCs were discovered. Antoine Gueydan (2014) identified the formation of three IMCs (Al2Cu, AlCu, and Al4Cu9) at the interface between copper and aluminum after thermal aging. IMCs have a significant effect to the properties of Cu/Al wires. Bending performance is a vital property for the actual application of wires. The brittle IMCs may create a stress concentration that can cause crack initiation during bending process. This work focus on the mechanical properties of Cu/Al composite wires after heat treatment. The effect of various annealing condition on mechanical and electrical properties are studied, in order to find the appropriate annealing conditions, which produce optimal combination properties of Cu/Al clad composite wires. Bending fracture of composite wires is discussed by morphology observation.

Tennessee was the leading producer state with 63 percent of domestic production, followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky. Amorphous adherent filnzs of silicon dioxide have been deposited on silicon substrates by the oxidation of silane at temperatures ranging from 650 to 1050C. Various diluents (argon, nitrogen, hydrogen) were used to suppress the formation of SiO2 in the gas phase. Deposition rates of the oxide were determined over the temperature range in question as functions of' re-actant flow rates. Etch rate studies were used for a cursory comparison of structural properties of deposited and thermally grown oxides. From electrical evaluation of metal-insulator-silicon capacitors it was determined that the interface charge density of deposited films is similar go that of dry-oxygen-grown films in the 850° to 1050 C temperature range. Deposited films exhibit several ionic instability effects which differ in detail from those reported for thermal oxides. Stable passivating films of silicon nitride over deposited oxides appear to be practical for use in silicon planar device fabrication. Such films can be prepared under temperature conditions which have less effect on substrate impurity distributions than in the case of grown oxides. AMORPHOUS silicon dioxide (silica) is compatible with silicon in electrical properties and is the most widely used dielectric in silicon devices at present. Silica films can be prepared by the oxidation of silicon or deposited on silicon or other substrate surfaces by chemical reactions or vacuum techniques. The ability of thermally grown silicon dioxide films to passivate silicon surfaces forms one of the practical bases of the planar device technology. Properly produced and treated films of grown SiO 2 can have low densities of interface charge (-1 X 10" charges per sq cm) and can be stable as regards fast migrating ionic sgecies. 1 To maintain these properties, even with an otherwise hermetically sealed ambient, the Sia layers must be at least l000 A thick. Such thicknesses require oxidation in dry oxygen for periods of 7.8 hr at 900°C or 2 hr at 1000°C. Although oxidation in steam or wet oxygen can reduce these times to 17 and 5 min, the resulting oxides must be annealed to produce acceptable levels of interface charge., Oxidation or annealing involving moderate to high temperatures for extended periods of time can be undesirable. Under some conditions, there can be changes in the distribution of impurities within the underlying substrate. A chemical deposition technique using gaseous am-bients is particularly attractive and flexible for preparing oxide films. With a wide range of deposition rates available, films can be produced under condi- tions of time and temperature less detrimental to impurity distributions in the silicon than in the case of thermal oxidation. The pyrolysis of alkoxysilanes, the hydrolysis of silicon halides, and various modifications of these reactions are most commonly used for the deposition of silica films.3 Silica films obtained in this manner are likely to be contaminated by the by-products of the reaction, organic impurities, or hydrogen halides. The use of the oxidation of silane for the deposition process has been reported recently.4 The deposition of silica films on single-crystal silicon substrates by the oxidation of silane in a gas flow system has been studied in this work. The deposition variables studied were the crystallographic orientation of the substrate surface, the substrate temperature, and the nature of the diluent gas. The electrical charge behavior of Si-SiO2-A1 structures prepared under various conditions was investigated by capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements of metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) capacitors. The experimental approaches and results are discussed in this paper. 1) DEPOSITION OF SILICA FILMS The overall reaction for the oxidation of silane is: The equilibrium constants of this reaction in the temperature range 500° to 1500°K, calculated from the JANAF thermochemical data,= are shown in Fig. 1. In addition to the large equilibrium constants, the oxidation of silane is also kinetically feasible at room temperature and above. However, the strong reactivity of silane toward oxygen tends to promote the nucleation of silica in the gas phase through homogeneous reactions, and the deposition of this silica on the substrate would yield nonadherent material. The formation of silica in the gas phase can be reduced by using low partial pressures of the reactants. Argon, hydrogen, and nitrogen were used as diluents in this work. 1.1) Experimental. The deposition of silica films by the oxidation of silane was carried out in a gas flow system using an apparatus shown schematically in Fig. 2. Appropriate flow meters and valves were used to control the flow of various reactants, i.e., argon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and silane. Semiconductor-grade silane, argon of 99.999 pct minimum purity, oxygen of 99.95 pct minimum purity, and nitrogen of 99.997 pct minimum purity, all purchased from the Matheson Co., were used without further purification. In several instances, a silicon nitride film was deposited over the silica film. This was achieved by the nitridation of silane with ammonia using anhydrous ammonia of better than 99.99 pct purity supplied by the Matheson CO.' The reactant mixture of the desired composition was passed through a Millipore filter into a horizontal water-cooled fused silica tube of 55 mm

The U. S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on blasting methods that reduce highwall overbreak and the associated rockfall hazards. This paper presents the results of tests using a low-density water gel to improve the quality of air-decked presplit blasts at a surface coal mine in New Mexico. The explosive's specific gravity averaged 0.50 and was bulk loaded using a modified truck which injected the gassing agent. Reductions in overbreak and resulting rockfall were achieved in comparison to a highwall presplit with ANFO. The test sections used 15° angled blast holes and resulted in 1,119 m (3,672 ft) of air deck presplit highwall using a low-density water gel which was then compared to 894 m (2,934 ft) of highwall shot with an ANFO air decked presplit design. The total quantity of explosives per hole ranged from 68 to 113 kg (150 to 250 lbs) and the 27 cm (10-5/8in) holes were 19- to 33-m (62- to 108-ft) deep on 5.5 m (18-ft) centers. Periodic visual examination and photographic surveys of the highwall test areas were used to document the amount of rockfall. In addition, laser profiles of selected sections were conducted to further delineate the damage and highwall contour differences.

Approximately 42 t of mercury were produced from Puhipuhi from the late nineteenth century until the end of World War II, with no significant gold or silver production. Sinter, eruption breccias and veins, mined for mercury at Puhipuhi and essentially barren of gold, are inferred in many geological models to represent the surficial levels of adularia-sericite style low sulfidation gold-silver systems. These systems may contain economic gold-silver mineralisation at depth. Conceptual geological models have been employed at Puhipuhi in the search for buried gold mineralisation. Homestake Mining utilised a McLaughlin model for exploration from 1982 to 1987, targeting mainly the vicinity of the sinter deposits. From 1987 to 1989 BHP sought deeper structurally controlled gold mineralisation within the basement greywackes, utilising models derived from studies of Round Mountain, USA and Hishikari, Japan. Macraes Mining Company Limited have accessed the previous work and applied a conceptual geological which invokes a north-south structural control for the emplacement of high-level felsic intrusions at depth. Dextral movement on these structures associated with oblique convergence facilitated the formation of a pull-apart basin in which lacustrine sediments overlie basement greywackes and are in tum overlain by Pliocene basalts. Continued activation of the NS structures created a series of inferred NE-trending dilational structures, which are targeted as fluid upflow centres for the surficial outflows. Upflows occur as eruption breccias (e.g., Plumduff) and outflow as silica sinters (eg Mt Mitchell, Williams) which are also partly obscured by the basalt cover. Argillic alteration and mercury mineralisation occur at elevated crustal levels (eg Puhipuhi mine). Modelling from structure and alteration zonations have targeted a fluid upflow in the vicinity of Bush Hill, which was not accessed by previous workers. This target was subsequently supported by surface geology and multi-element soil geochemistry.
