ASX's mining market has been successful because of the high reporting standards in the JORC Code and the high standards of professionalism and the intellectual capital that has been built up among the participants - the mining professionals, brokers, analysts, mining investors, professional advisers and the market operator. The balance of knowledge and understanding among these participants combined with the competition for capital, contributes to the standards for our mining market in a way that the market operator simply cannot replicate by market rules alone.

This paper's aim is to demonstrate, by reviewing findings and conclusions of earlier authors and through recording and interpreting the outcome of recent laboratory study of the ores, that the ores around the Gem stocks are metamorphosed equivalents of common siderite-sulfide ores far from the stocks, as was first proposed by Hershey (1912, 1913). That is, all the ores probably have the Precambrian age of 1250 million years reported by Long et al. (1960). Those near the Gem stocks, however, were extensively metamorphosed in Cretaceous time during the emplacement of stocks so their resemblance and relation to other veins in the district are camouflaged.

Utilization of true in situ technologies for mining copper in Arizona will involve a complex environmental permitting process. This process is a key factor in determining the feasibility, costs, and implementing time frames required for development of this innovative mining method. The regulatory structure in Arizona is presently changing due to enactment of the Environmental Quality Act (EQA) of 1986 and development of new aquifer protection rules and regulations. The Bureau of Mines has reviewed the comprehensive hydrogeologic characterization, ground water monitoring, mechanical integrity testing, well construction, contingency planning, and other regulatory elements that will serve as mechanisms to assure protection of ground water resources. The purpose of this paper is to inform the domestic copper industry of the significance of the new Arizona regulatory structure and its implications for prospective in situ operators.

Tight control of electrode paste additions, hard and soft paste levels, baked zone position and electrode temperatures are integral to superior Söderberg electrode management practices. Paste addition is typically effected through briquettes, cylinders or large blocks. Each electrode paste form has its advantages and disadvantages, but probably a more crucial element from an electrode control perspective is the frequency and amount of electrode paste addition into a Söderberg electrode column. The detrimental effects of excessive soft paste levels leading to Stokes? Law segregation of paste in the electrode column are well documented, while several operators have effectively implemented the use of electrode thermocouples to monitor paste temperatures and automated slipping algorithms to control baking conditions within electrodes. Somewhat less well appreciated are the negative influences of inadequate soft paste levels, especially when coupled with excessive paste cylinder or block additions and resulting high hard paste levels. The alternative of insufficient hard paste levels and associated overheated electrode paste must also be considered, and can contribute to paste segregation directly. This condition also has the potential to generate gas mixtures in the electrode column that are concurrently a potential health hazard, while being prone to spontaneous combustion. Results of industrial trials on electric furnaces using Söderberg electrodes in a variety of applications from ferrochromium, to ferromanganese and even platinum-bearing base metal sulphides smelting are presented to illustrate the influence of paste loading practices on the dynamics of hard and soft paste levels. Possible electrode failure mechanisms attributable to inadequate paste level control will be discussed through some industrial examples. Suitable paste loading practices to mitigate the risks of inappropriate paste levels and associated electrode incidents are presented.

O Alto-Forno é o principal equipamento em uso para a produção do ferro gusa. Para a redução do minério de ferro em gusa são alimentados pelo topo do alto forno a carga composta por minério de ferro, carvão vegetal ou coque e calcário. Durante o processo de redução os gases redutores ascendentes entram em contato com a carga e geram pós no interior do alto forno. Para que esse resíduo não seja lançado diretamente na atmosfera é necessário que haja a recuperação desse material particulado e uma das etapas é a lavagem da poeira do gás de alto-forno que permite a separação dos particulados sólidos na forma de lama, denominada lama de alto-forno. O objetivo do presente trabalho é a caracterização físico e química da lama do alto-forno a carvão vegetal de uma siderúrgica integrada localizada na região sudeste do estado do Pará, e assim fornecer subsídios para estudos que busquem o reaproveitamento desse resíduo através da sinterização para torná-lo um material mais reativo e dar uma destinação ecologicamente correta e de acordo com as normas ambientas. Para isso, foram realizadas, em laboratório, análises como a granulometria, massa específica, difratometria de raios - x e fluorescência de raios - x. Os teores dos óxidos predominantes foram 57,33 % de Fe2O3, 8,14 % de CaO, 5,6 % de SiO2 e 1,37 % de ZnO).

"Until recently, liquefaction-related studies concentrated on clean sands believing that only sands are susceptible to liquefaction. However, a few earthquakes like 1976 Tangshan earthquake, the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the 1999 Kocaeli earthquake, the 2010 Chile earthquake, and the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, etc. showed that sand with fines could also liquefy. The research findings on liquefaction of silty soils are limited, and several structures constructed on such soil deposits are damaged during the past earthquakes. Some previous results of research on earthquake events show an increase of liquefaction resistance in silt soils with increase the fines content, but some report the opposite trend. This study presents the results based on undrained triaxial cyclic tests which were carried out on the fine sand with fines (0%, 10%, 20% and 40% fines). The samples were prepared at the required unit weight (Dr = 50%) and saturated by using back pressure and cell pressure increments. Each consolidated sample is subjected to cyclic loading with sinusoidal wave load form at a frequency of 1 Hz. The liquefaction resistance is evaluated in terms of cyclic stress ratio required to cause 100% pore pressure or 20% failure strain occur at 15 numbers of load cycles. Results are presented in forms of pore pressure build up and axial strain propagation plots. As the fines content increased, an increase in liquefaction potential was observed.INTRODUCTIONLiquefaction and related phenomenon have been responsible for tremendous amounts of damage all around the world. In general, the liquefaction may occur in fully saturated sands, silts and low plastic clays. When the saturated soil mass is subjected to seismic or dynamic loads, there is a sudden buildup of pore water within a short duration, and it could not dissipate which leads to reducing the effective shear strength of soil mass. In this state, the soil mass behaves like a liquid and causes large deformations, settlements, flow failures, etc. This phenomenon is called soil liquefaction. As a result, the ability of soil deposit to support the foundations of buildings, bridges, dams, etc. is reduced. Liquefiable soil also exerts a higher pressure on retaining walls.This lateral movement of soil could cause settlement of the retained soil. A sudden build-up of pore water pressure during quake also triggers landslides. Liquefaction damages of structures are commonly observed in low-lying areas near the rivers, lakes, and oceans."

This information circular, which describes the methods and costs of sinking a small underground shaft with steel supports at the Keystone mine of American Smelting and Refining Co., near Crested Butte, Colo., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on current shaft-sinking practices in various mining districts of the United States. Preparations for sinking a combined exploration, development, and production shaft from the lowest level of the Keystone mine began early in 1957. This vertical, three-compartment, 6-1/4-by 16-foot rectangular shaft was to be sunk in separate stages or lifts so as to correspond with the progress of an associated lateral exploration and development program. The first section of the shaft was collared and sunk to a depth of 209 feet between September 1957 and April 1958. Because of the depressed base-metal market, the mine was shut down as soon as the initial phase of the exploration and development program had been completed and before any deeper sinking could be attempted.

Column experiments were performed to determine the ability of Madison aquifer material to adsorb arsenic and other constituents in a heavily mined watershed of the Black Hills in western South Dakota. The Madison aquifer is a karstic dolomite and limestone reservoir that is exposed on the flanks of the Black Hills. Streams that cross the Madison in the eastern Black Hills typically lose all their flow to the aquifer at sinkholes. In this work, Madison aquifer material was obtained for loading of six-inch diameter columns, which were backfilled with Madison aquifer water. Stream water then was allowed to displace the aquifer water during column testing in order to simulate mixing of the two waters at sinkholes and to determined adsorption of arsenic and other dissolved constituents. Initial results show that some adsorption of arsenic occurred when compared to more conservative tracers such as nitrate.

INTRODUCTION The heavy risk inherent in all underground construction projects contributes significantly to the high cost of transportation tunnels. First, the knowledge of this risk leads the engineer to design conservatively. Second, the cost overruns are still common with a high proportion of them originating from corrective measures needed when unforeseen problems develop during excavation. These unforeseen problems includes - encountering unexpected objects, materials and water conditions - experiencing an unforeseen behavior of the materials - damaging property beyond the expected range of influence of the tunnel construction. To minimize these expenses, more emphasis is being placed on well planned and interpreted site investigation programs in the final design and planning stages of the project. It is well known that the cost of a planned excavation is less than the cost of dealing with the same conditions when they are encountered unexpectedly. Therefore, the objective of site investigation is to provide a complete set of reliable data for designers and contractors that is continuous along the projected tunnel alignment. Two alternatives axe available to achieve this objective; - for shallow tunnels, it is often feasible to generate continuous data by drilling appropriately spaced, vertical bore holes and applying sensing techniques for interpolation (1, 8). - for deep tunnels, or certain urban tunnels under existing structures, closely spaced, vertical bore holes are not feasible except for narrow zones at the portals. In such cases direct horizontal penetration may be required that may be complemented by radial sensing to extend the range of information.

INTRODUCTION The selective sensitivity of plastic nuclear track detectors (PNTD's) to low energy 4He particles in an environment which also contains gamma and beta radiations has made these detectors prime candidates for the dosimetric measurement of the concentrations of radon and its daughter products in mine air. Their passive, integrating mode of measurement, small size, low weight and inexpensiveness are attractive characteristics for large scale personnel dosimetry. The detectors can be used in either active or passive dosimeters. In active devices, the PNTD is placed in close proximity to a sampling filter. The filter collects, from a calibrated air flow, all the daughter nuclei which are in suspension. As the daughter nuclei pass through the decay chain, through 214Po, a fraction of the 4He particles emitted are registered as latent tracks in the plastic. In passive devices, the PNTD is placed in direct contact with the ambient air containing the radio-nuclei concentrations to be determined. The active dosimeters have the advantage of excellent sensitivity, and the measured track densities yield very close approximations to accumulated Working Level (WL)** exposures. They have the disadvantage that the simplicity of the passive PNTD is lost, since a battery-driven constant flow-rate air pump is a necessity. The passive dosimeters are simple in construction and use, but they have the disadvantage that WL exposures are not directly measured and certain assumptions concerning radon and daughter equilibrium conditions must be made in determining WL exposures from the measured track densities. Also the sensitivities, in track densities per Working Level Hour (WLH) exposure, are much less than for active dosimeters. Dosimeters of both types have been investigated. Passive devices have been tested extensively both in the laboratory and in mines. Active devices have been laboratory tested. In our earlier measurements, cellulose nitrate plastic detectors were used exclusively, since this material had the highest sensitivity of the PNTD's then in use. When the properties of CR-39 plastic were discovered (Cartwright, 1978; Cassou and Benton, 1978), this material was used, where possible, to take advantage of its superior sensitivity. The results of our earlier work have previously been published (Frank and Benton, 1977). * Research sponsored by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of Interior, under Contract No. JO-188003. ** A Working Level is defined as any combination of the short-lived radon daughters containing 1.3 x 105 MeV of potential 4He-particle energy per liter of ambient air. PASSIVE DOSIMETRY In the earliest testing of PNTD's for passive WL dosimetry, a single strip of cellulose nitrate plastic was used to determine the total cumulative 4He-particle activity in the air of simulated uranium mine and uranium mine environments (Rock, 1968; Rock [et al], 1969; White, 1969). The measurements yielded a close relationship between track densities and WL exposures in a controlled, static environment, but poor accuracy in the active mine tests. It was assumed that equilibrium differences contributed largely to the variations found. The response of PNTD's to airborne 4He-particle emitters, derived by Lovett (1969), demonstrated that detectors such as cellulose nitrate, which has a sensitivity cutoff at 4He-particle energies below the emission energies of radon and its daughters, are equally sensitive to the activity concentrations of radon, 218po(RaA) and 214Po(RaC'). Since radon does not contribute to WL as it is defined, and since, under normal ventilated uranium mine conditions, the radon activity constitutes about 40% to 70% of the total 4He-particle activity, the WL exposures calculated from measured track densities are very sensitive to the particular radon daughter equilibrium conditions. Also, the detector does not weight the individual daughter activities in proportion to their importance to WL. The equation for WL is WL = 0.00103C2 + 0.00507C3 + 0.00373C4 (1) where C2, C3 and C4 are the activity concentrations of RaA, RaB and RaC-C', respectively, in pCi/[L]. The detector leaves C3 unmeasured and weights C2 and C4, equally. [This problem has been approached by Domanski et al (1975, 1979), for some non-uranium mines, by measuring equilibrium conditions throughout the mines to determine a mean value for A, the inverse of the Working Level Ratio (WLR = 100 WL where C1 is the activity of radon-222 in pCi/[L].) The distribution of values allowed Domanski to determine probable errors in calculating WL exposures from track densities. However, measurements of equilibrium conditions in U.S. uranium mines (Breslin et al, 1969; Holub and Droullard, 1978) indicate that this method would not be accurate enough for uranium miner personal dosimetry.] A two-element dosimeter was designed at our laboratory to compensate for equilibrium variations. The first element is a radon detector; the second is a detector for the total 4He-particle activity in the ambient air, just as in the single element dosimeters cited above. The addition of the radon detector allows the equilibrium conditions for the individual nuclei to be determined, given certain assumptions concerning the interrelationships between the nuclei concentrations in mine air. The two detectors and the problems involved in calculating WL exposures from their measurements are discussed below.

The investigation of a 50 pct Co alloy was undertaken to determine whether there was any direct correlation between the structure and properties of Co-Fe alloys which were given various magnetic heat treatments. The magnetic anisotropy and texture of the 0.002-in. cold-reduced 98 pct material tend to decrease and change in nature with increasing temperature of the recrystallization anneal. Annealing samples in a magnetic field had little effect on either the magnetic properties or texture. However, cooling them in a magnetic field greatly improved their magnetic properties. THE beneficial influence of a magnetic field applied during the heat treatment of certain soft magnetic materials has been known for a long time. Early work showed that the presence of a magnetic field of a few oersteds during the heat treatment of Fe-Ni alloys will cause a large increase in maximum permeability. A pronounced increase in the residual induction which is produced by the magnetic anneal causes the hysteresis loop to approach the shape of a rectangle. Such results are beneficial since the desired properties are high permeability, high induction at maximum permeability, high residual induction, and low coercive force. More recently Libsch and coworkers1 studied the effect of magnetic annealing on the hysteresis properties of a series of Co-Fe alloys prepared from powders. They observed good response for the 35 and 50 pct Co alloys but little response for the 42 pct Co alloy. They pointed out that this was somewhat surprising since the 42 pct alloy has a high linear magnetostriction and zero crystal anisotropy and similar conditions in Fe-Ni alloys give excellent response to magnetic annealing. They found optimum properties to be at the 50 pct composition with residual induction, Br = 19,000 gauss and coercive force, Hc = 0.68 oersteds after the magnetic anneal. Before the magnetic anneal these values were B, = 12,600 gauss and Hc = 1.15 oersteds. The optimum treatment consisted of cooling from above the y-a transformation temperature to 900°C in a field of 20 oersteds, holding 11/2 hr at 900°C, then cooling at a rate of 20° to 25°C per min in the field to below 230°C. Cooling rate mainly affected coercive force with the value decreasing from 1.09 to 0.88 oersteds as the rate was increased from 3° to 48°C per min. Cooling from 1020" to 900°C in a field followed by further cooling to 230°C without the field gave properties decidedly inferior to those for samples annealed with the field applied throughout the cooling. They concluded that to get the best properties the samples must be cooled in a field to a threshold temperature above which the alloy is plastic enough to be affected by magnetostriction. In this respect the holding temperature must be high enough so that the alloy exhibits good plasticity to permit the optimum orienting of magnetic domains by relaxation of magnetostriction. In contrast, the holding time was of less significance for there was little improvement when the time exceeded 1/2 hr. The improvement in properties effected by magnetic annealing has usually been attributed to the establishment of a domain texture caused by the "freezing in" of magnetic strains. On the other hand, Smoluchowski and Turner2,3 apparently found that a magnetic field applied during recrystallization could alter the crystal texture. If the particles produced and transported in your plant are as chunky as rough crushed coal or as fine as cement, there are probably several conveying and elevating systems suitable for your operation. The problem is deciding which is most suitable in terms of space, energy cost, allowable product degradation, productivity, and angle of movement. Each conveying and elevating method should be fit to the products it can handle successfully, to desirable economics, and to suitability for the overall operating scheme. Matching along these lines will result in selection guides that should be useful for many years, although design evolution is expected for the materials handling equipment involved. There are several common bulk material handling devices for moving solids: belt conveyors, screw conveyors, bucket elevators, chain conveyors, and en-masse conveyors/ elevators. En-masse conveyor/elevator equipment is commonly compared and contrasted with the other devices. These comparisons often involve en-masse versus all others. En-masse has developed into a versatile technique because the machines can move materials horizontally, vertically, or in closed circuit. Such machines unload, elevate, store, reclaim, and distribute materials-all without ancillary equipment except for chutes and gates. Bulk material can be carried, as with a belt conveyor or bucket elevator; pushed, as with a flight or screw conveyor; bumped, as with a vibrating conveyor; blown, as with a pneumatic conveyor; fluidized, as with a dense phase pneumatic conveyor; or by applying internal forces to it to induce "en-masse" flow. Conveying en-masse is analogous to the flow of a fluid in an open channel, and elevating en-masse is analogous to the flow of fluid in a pipe. In the case of a fluid, flow is caused by a differential in pressure. With en-masse movement, flow results from resistance to shear induced by the movement of chain and flights.

Around 90% of the chromite resources of India are concentrated in the Boula-Nuasahi Sukinda belt of Orissa state. In order to conserve these valuable ore resources strategically, several companies established chrome ore beneficiation plants in this region. The general beneficiation process in these plants consists of gravity unit operations such as Floatex density separator, spiral, wet shaking table etc. Most of these gravity circuits suffer huge losses of valuable minerals in the tailing. Any attempt towards decreasing these losses would not only increase the limited reserves in India but also make the economics of the operations more attractive. Apart from the liberation phenomena, in many of the operating plants considerable quantity of values are lost in the tailings, due to inconsistent feed quality, inappropriate selection of operating and design parameters. Mineral engineers in this regard have to play a proactive and continuous role to improve the performance of all separating units by modifying even small changes based on tests conducted in laboratory under controlled conditions followed by attempts to make necessary changes in the plant. For such improvements, accurate data collection and proper data interpretation followed by making necessary change which is implementable in an operating plant play a very critical role in performance of the circuit. Databank collected over a period of time under various conditions would also help in overcoming the future problems related to either variation in the feed characteristics or specific demand by metallurgical industries. The above concept was adopted in one of the operating chromite beneficiation plant at Sukinda. The approach adopted and practical problems encountered during the study were reported in this paper. The result of trial campaign has shown that, an overall product assaying 30.2% Cr2O3 from the feed (18% Cr2O3 ) can be produced to in single stage. "The analysis of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) combines remote sensing techniques with laser spectroscopy. Over variable distances different rock types are identified or changes in the quality of one rock type are recognised. LIF Analysers operate non-destructive, non-contact, on-line and in real-time. Installed over conveyors or over driveways the analysers ""look"" at the moving bulk solids 20 times per second and provide in real-time information for downstream sorting, blending or optimisation of processing. LIF Analysers recognise rock types (hardness information or dilution control), degrees of alteration, degrees of oxidation and –semi-quantitative- content of certain minerals in an ore. Only under favourable conditions quantitative assay information can be obtained, as e.g. the phosphorus content of Kiruna type iron ore.The main application of LIF Analysers is seen in big open pit operations, where the muck is trucked to an in-pit crusher and the crushed rock conveyed out of the pit to its respective destination: e.g. the primary high grade ore to the mill, the low grade or oxidised ore to the leach pads and the internal waste to the dumps.In underground mining and especially in block caving operations dilution control is of utmost importance. Here a LIF Analyser mounted on the back of a pick-up truck can be moved from drawpoint to drawpoint and quickly assess the degree of dilution.Closer to the mill the stockpile management based on LIF analysis will lead to stockpiles sorted according to rock type (hardness), degrees of alteration and oxidation. In case of direct feeding rom ore to the mill the knowledge of the type and quality of all the material between the in-pit crusher and the mill facilitates optimisation of e.g. reagent dosage."

Wellington lies in a seismically active area 150 km from a subduction zone and in the vicinity of several active faults, which poses a risk to its infrastructure and inhabitants. One of these major faults, the Wellington Fault, runs through the centre of the city and across several lifelines, including the natural gas pipeline and the freshwater pipeline. The first settlement in the area was severely damaged in 1848, soon after its establishment, by an earthquake of approximate magnitude Mw 7.4 - 7.5 (Grapes, Little, & Downes, 1998). In 1855, another earthquake of magnitude Mw 8.2 generated by a nearby fault uplifted the eastern part of the current Wellington area and caused several landslides in the surrounding hills (Grapes & Downes, 1997). The Central Business District lies in the area of a sedimentary basin and partly on reclaimed land. Many residential areas, as well as some vital infrastructure, however, lie on or along the slopes in the surrounding hills. The bedrock in the area comprises predominantly the Torlesse greywacke of Permian – Late Triassic age. The greywacke is tilted to a steep angle, intensively faulted and fractured (Cook, 2001). Even though several studies in the past assessed the seismic risk in the area (e.g. Brabhaharan, Hancox, Perrin, & Dellow, 1994), the studies either focussed solely on the area of the sedimentary basin or based their assessment of the hilly terrain purely on slope morphology (slope angle). Previous studies have shown that slope shape and contrasting materials in the slope can amplify earthquake ground motions, such factors are typically called site effects (e.g. Geli, Bard, & Jullien, 1988). Any attempt to systematically quantify the site effects and consequent seismic response of the slopes and use it to predict the consequences of the next large-magnitude earthquake, has not yet been carried out. In this extended abstract we outline the methodology of a PhD research project, focussed on investigating the site effects on the slopes around Wellington and on creating representative numerical models of ‘characteristic’ Wellington slopes and materials. This extended abstract presents the methodology adopted for the assessment using the Te Ahumairangi Hill site as an example.

The kaolinite presence in bauxite ores increases caustic soda consumption during the digestion step in the Bayer process. Depending on the kaolinite content, the utilization of the ore in the Bayer process may be unfeasible. This investigation addressed the variables involved in kaolinite flotation through microflotation experiments in a Hallimond tube and zeta potential determinations. The tests were performed with a pure sample of kaolinite (96%). Five collectors were tested: Duomeen T (DT), cetyl pyridinium chloride (CPC), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), dodecylamine (DDA) and Flotigam EDA (EDA). Four of them performed well as collectors, at a concentration of 1x10-4 mol/L: CPC, CTAB, DDA and EDA. The kaolinite isoelectric point (IEP) was determined at pH = 4.6. The IEP was shifted towards higher pH values in the collectors? presence, indicating specific adsorption onto the mineral surface.

As the mining industry begins efforts to examine the feasibility of extraterrestrial resource utilization, the extraction and processing of icy regolith containing water and other volatile materials will be the initial focus for future expansion of capabilities. Pure water is essential for human consumption, and a source of oxygen and hydrogen. The latter, along with the volatile materials, lend themselves to the creation of fuels that may be used for further space exploration at distances not currently feasible. For any extraterrestrial scoping project, the transport of materials to geoscientists remains virtually impossible. Therefore, analysis must be done in-situ, possibly millions of miles away from the nearest human. To address the need for geologic resource estimation in the absence of geoscientists, an infrared framework has been developed for the analysis of water ice content in simulants of permanently shaded lunar regolith. This framework relies on a convolutional neural network model for the rapid analysis of percent water ice content in samples, at which point standard geostatistical methods may be employed.

The relevance of reliability studies for deep foundations is considered in this paper with special reference to pile foundations. Attention is drawn to uncertainties related to applied loads, the load-carrying capacity and the safety margin of a pile foundation. The essential steps in a reliability study are outlined. An essential goal of any study is the determination of the Reliability Index or Safety Index under different conditions of loading and operation. Calculations concerning probability of failure or success require an assumption to be made concerning the probability distribution of the safety margin. The significance of this and other assumptions should be clearly understood. Reliability approaches should be used to complement conventional deterministic studies.
