This paper describes the MillMapper technology developed for condition monitoring of liners and other operational parameters in grinding mills used for mineral comminution, by presenting a case study of its application. MillMapper provides maintenance engineers, operations managers and process and plant metallurgists with quantitative, accurate and reliable condition monitoring data for informed decision making regarding the maintenance and metallurgical aspects of such mills. MillMapper uses calibrated laser scanners for the capture of three-dimensional surface representations inside a mill during a shutdown so as to determine shell, feed and discharge liner thickness at a resolution of several million data points, a procedure that nominally takes five minutes to complete. Once several data sets over time have been collected inside a mill, MillMapper can be used for liner wear, liner wear zone, liner weight, ball charge volume, ball charge weight and intelligent profile tracking over time. Liner tracking in combination with site defined reline and failure criteria and with throughput tonnage data is utilised for change out prediction of each separate liner segment type.

Anthracite has been mined from the Narragansett Basin of Rode Island and Massachusetts sporadically, and with limited success, for more than 170 years. Beginning in 1974, interest in the coal of the Basin was renewed because of increasing prices and supply uncertainties involving petroleum products. During 1974-77 the Bureau of Mines analyzed 28 samples of Basin coals and conducted washing tests on 20 of them. Results, reported herein, indicate that the coals are low-sulfur, moderate- to high-ash anthracites and semianthracites, suitable for physical preparation to a product generally containing less than 10 percent ash. Additional exploration, sampling and testing will be required to permit appraisal of the potential value of the Narragansett Basin coal resources.

"As an extension of the work on the effect of OH- on various cations in hydrometallurgical systems, the effect of Cl-, Br-, I- and CN- on cations such as Ag+, Cd2+, Hg2+, Cu+, Cu2+, Co2+, Zn2+, Pb2+ and Sn2+ has been examined in detail. The Newton-Raphson technique has been used to determine the amounts of various metal species as a function of the concentration of anions. Some practical implications of various metal complexes in metal separation and removal from solutions have been examined and discussed.IntroductionUnderstanding the role of anions in hydrometallurgical processes often determines the success of an operation. The successful choice of concentration and type of anions not only leads to an effective extraction and removal of metals (Esmaeili et al., 2005; Brbooti et al., 2011; Wei et al., 2005; Jeppesen et al., 2009; Al-Tarazi et al., 2004), but also to assisting effective separation of various metals, whether it is a solvent extraction, ion exchange operation or even a simple precipitation (Farha et al., 2011; Sevenich and Fritz, 1983; Rashid, 1974).This paper continues the discussion of the role of anions in hydrometallurgical systems beyond the role of OH-, which was the topic of a previous paper (Kim et al., 2014). Table 1 lists various anions that are frequently used in conjunction with metal ions to be selectively separated or precipitated. As seen in the table, many anions are used frequently in hydrometallurgical practices. Some of the more frequently used anions include OH-, SO4 2- and CO3 2-. The halogen elements, Cl-, Br- and I- , as well as CN-, are also used in hydrometallurgical applications, especially in relation to noble metal recoveries (Meng and Han, 1994; Zhang et al., 1996; Sun et al., 1996; Starovoytov et al., 2007)."

One of the most important problems of reservoir mechanics is the prediction of the behavior of a gas and oil producing reservoir for a variety of production programs. In the absence of a knowledge of the behavior of even idealized systems, it has been difficult, if not impossible, to determine which production program would yield maximum economic recovery. The problem was formulated mathematically many years ago, hilt a solution of the equations had never been obtained because of their extreme complexity. The solution of the problem became possible, however, with the advent of modern computing machines. This paper describes a digital method of solving the problem and discusses some of the results which have been obtained to date. The IBM Type 701 Electronic Data Processing Machines located at IBM's New York Scientific Computing Service were used successfully to perform the computations. The flow of gas and oil through a reservoir can be described mathematically by two second-order, nonlinear partial differential equations which must be solved simultaneously. All derivatives were replaced by finite differences to bring the equations into a form suitable for digital calculations. A number of finite ditference formulations were investigated and one form was found which resulted in stable, convergent solutions. This form was used to obtain .solutions for both radial and linear systems producing by solution gas drive. The results presented in this paper are: (a) saturation profile within the hypothetical reservoir vs. time, (b) pres.strre profile within the hypothetical reservoir vs. time. (c) gas-oil ratio vs. cumulative recovery, and (d) ultimate recovery. The saturation profile clearly shows the effect of critical gas saturation. The saturation near the well-bore drops quickly to the critical gas saturation and remains essentially at that value until the remainder of the reservoir also has dropped to the critical gas saturation. The pressure profile shows a smooth variation of pressure across the reservoir. The gas-oil ratio drops slightly during the early stage of production until the critical gas saturation is reached, rises rapidly from then on and eventually passes through a sharp maximum just before the economic limit of production is reached. For the radial example presented in this paper, the average oil .saturation of the reservoir at a time corresponding to the limit of economic production was 56.5 per cent and the ultimate recovery was 6.86 per cent. The difference between change in saturation and ultimate recovery is caused by .shrinkage of the oil phase. The solution time with the 701 Computer is sufficiently short to permit an economically feasible investigation of the effects of variation of the many parameters which describe an oil reservoir. In particular, the ultimate recovery for various systems can he determined as a function of rock and fluid properties, of well spacing. and of production rate. Economical cleaning of dirty water usually requires flocculation with an efficient organic polyelectrolyte. This paper discusses identification of optimum flocculant systems. Supporting laboratory data with on-site tests and full scale field trials supplies information necessary for matching the polymer to the plant.

In the preparation of this paper, the author has drawn upon experience with the operation of a blast furnace on Ioo per cent scrap burden, which he believes was the first operation of its kind in the country. It is the writer's further belief that much of the controversy attending discussions of this subject may be obviated by the presentation of a group of facts that should be known by blast-furnace men and open-hearth men alike. The following question has been raised: "Is iron made with scrap in the blastfurnace charge as good iron as that made without scrap—made with straight ore?" This question may he answered in part by the fact that the open-hearth men of the Bethlehem Steel Co. who used pig iron from a blast furnace that operated on Ioo per cent steel scrap found no difficulty in the processing of such iron other than that to be expected from the known analysis. Operation with ioo PeR Cent Steel Scrap During World War I, there was accumulated at the Bethlehem plant of the Bethlehem Steel Co. some 22,000 tons of alloy-steel turnings and borings. This scrap material was highly corroded and, like alloy-steel turnings of that period, were as a drug on the market. There was also a small tonnage of scale, rich in valuable metal. If this scrap could be worked up into pig iron, it would become readily available for use in the open hearth. In order that the pig iron should contain the maximum percentage of nickel, permission was obtained from the Management to try a Ioo per cent scrap operation. Accordingly, a blast furnace was swung over on July 25, 1919; the percentage of steel scrap increased more or less irregularly until July 29, when Ioo per cent steel turnings were charged. Except for occasional charges of nickel scale as an "cxtra," the operation continued uninterruptedly until Aug. 27, when the furnace was swung back to the regular ore—ore and scrap—operation. During this period, the furnace production ranged from a low of 568.60 tons to a maximum of 766.07 tons. At the swing-over from Ioo per cent scrap to the regular burden, the charge I hung up rather severely. While the latter condition has nothing to do with the object of the paper, a brief discussion of the experience will appear later because of the interest it may have for blast-furnace operators. In Table I, results of the first and last days of the ore charge are shown, July 25 and July 29. The last column shows a summary for the period of maximum scrap ' charge. The furnace employed had a hearth 16 ft. o in., bosh 22 ft. o in., stock line 15 ft. 6 in., bell 11 ft. 6 in., batter in., bosh angle 73' 27' and a Balrer-Neuman top, with gas-engine blowers. The mining district of the Quadrilátero Ferrífero (QF) in southeastern Brazil contributes to 70 per cent of the Brazilian iron ore production, which reached 370 Mt in 2010. Traditionally, four iron ore types were mined in the QF region:1. soft haematite,2. hard haematite,3. friable ‘itabirite’ (the Brazilian name for metamorphosed banded iron formation), and4. canga (an indurated iron-rich crust).With the exception of the hard haematite, these categories derive from supergene enrichment of the Paleoproterozoic Cauê Itabirite. High current iron ore demand means that the QF high grade supergene ores will be depleted in a few decades. Consequently, several mining projects are being developed to exploit unenriched, fresh itabirite. Among them, the Mineração Usiminas Serra Azul project in northwestern QF is one of the most advanced. Four major itabirite types occur in the QF region:1. siliceous (or standard),2. dolomitic,3. amphibolitic, and4. magnetitic.The dominant type in Serra Azul region is a fresh siliceous itabirite, composed essentially of haematite, martite and quartz that averages 36 per cent Fe (51.5 per cent Fe2O3) and 47 per cent SiO2. The second type, the magnetitic itabirite, consisting of magnetite, martite, gruneritecummingtonite, quartz, dolomite, stilpnomelane, and subordinate haematite, is typically a strongly magnetic greenish banded iron formation with the iron grade varying between 25 and 35 per cent. Chemically, it differs from the siliceous itabirite due to the relatively high CaO, MgO and, consequently, high LOI contents. Together with supergene ores, fresh itabirites have been included in the ore reserves of the Serra Azul project. We anticipate that all the four types of fresh itabirite will be incorporated as ore in the QF region, causing a huge increase on the iron ore resources of the district, and representing enormous environmental and technological challenges for the local iron ore industry.

It is now recognized that several important types of reactions in metallic systems proceed by the formation of nuclei and the growth of these nuclei. The process of freezing is a simple example of this, as Tammann pointed out years ago.1 Tammann held that the rate of freezing is determined by a rate of nucleation, expressed as the number of nuclei formed per unit volume of unfrozen liquid per second, and a rate of growth of these nuclei, expressed as the linear rate of radial growth in units of length per second. For isothermal freezing the conception is simple; for ordinary freezing, extending over a range of temperature, it is not as simple, for the values of the two constants must change with change in temperature. There is ample evidence that the postulated mechanism is correct even though a quantitative derivation of the rate of isothermal or of ordinary freezing in terms of the two constants has been lacking. In recent years other reactions have been found to proceed in a similar fashion. It has been well established, particularly by Bain12-8 that the formation of pearlite from the eutectoid decomposition of the solid solution austenite proceeds in such a way, and Polanyi and Schmid, Tammann and Crone, Karnop and Sachs, and others9-11 have shown that the process of recrystallization proceeds in a similar way. Isothermal reaction rates have been determined for eutectoid decomposition by a number of investigators. Bain's2-8 work on the formation of pearlite from austenite is especially valuable in this respect—the type of isothermal reaction curve obtained, as illustrated in Fig. 13, showed an initial slow rate, accelerating to an intermediate maximum rate which then decelerated to the completion of the reaction; similar curves have been obtained by Wever and his collaborators.12 Other eutectoid decompositions show similar behavior: for example, the decomposition of the beta eutectoid in the copper-aluminum system, studied by Smith

The influence of organic acids simple salts and A. niger saccharose and molasses worts on sodium oleate adsorption on the salt-type mineral surfaces has been studied. It was found that salts of organic acids had an effect on the sodium oleate adsorption on barite calcite and magnesite. The collector adsorption on the barite and calcite surfaces decreased under the influence of investigated worts. Experimental data suggest that the biomodification of salt-type mineral surfaces can be used for the selective separation of these minerals.

Fox the purpose of this paper all steels will be divided into two divisions: effervescing and non-effervescing. This classification must be borne in mind as many statements true of one class are not true of the other. Effervescing steels are those that effervesce in the molds, evolving large volumes of gases, which, in escaping, throw up a spray of molten particles of steel and give the molten metal in the mold a rapid stirring or churning motion until it freezes, or, at least, becomes pasty. This effervescing is intended and proper. The non-effervescing steels, which are more or less completely killed, should not evolve any gas in the molds. Many years ago the writer proposed to call the two classes of steels evolution and solution steels, depending on whether the gases in the molds are evolved or kept in solution, but the present designations seen to be better. In America, at least, effervescing steels are in a class by themselves and include steels made for boiler, tank, and ship plates, steel pipe, soft steel wire, wire nails, soft machinery, and structural steels. These are all low-carbon steels with less than 0.40 per cent. carbon. Low-carbon steels that do not effervesce but are killed are also made; these are put into ingots and castings but they are outside the limits of this paper. Effervescing steel is cast into square or slab molds, either top or bottom poured. Most of the effervescing steel is made in the basic open-hearth furnace, though much is made by the acid Bessemer process and a little is made in the acid open-hearth. It is not made by the crucible or electric-furnace process, in which the volume of gas required cannot be produced in the steel and evolved from it in the mold to give the effervescence desired. Any steel ingot, when teeming is finished, is of a certain size or volume. Leaving out of consideration for the moment the lessening of the over-all dimensions of the ingot through contraction due to loss of heat, the ingot may be placed in one of three classes: It may settle, losing in volume; it may stand, that is, remain constant in volume; it may rise, that is, increase in volume.

QUANTITATIVE measurements of the temper brittleness of steel are made by comparing the difference between embrittled and unembrittled specimens in the temperature of transition from ductile to brittle fracture. Since hardness affects the transition temperature, a study of the combined effects of hardness and temper brittleness appeared desirable. In this investigation a commercial SAE 3140 steel, which has been reported on previously in temper brittleness studies,* was used. Blanks from this steel were austenitized for 1 hr at 900°C and water quenched. The blanks were then divided into six groups and further heat treated as follows: Group 1—tempered at 675°C for 4 hr and water quenched; Groups 2, 3, 4, and 5—tempered at 675", 650°, 625', and 600 °C respectively for 1 hr and water quenched; and Group 6—tempered at 500°C for y2 hr and water quenched. Each of these groups was divided into two parts; one part was tested without further heat treatment, and the other was embrittled for 48 hr at 500°C and water quenched. Tempering treatments between 500" and 600°C were avoided because of the rapid embrittlement occurring in that range for this steel. The heat-treated blanks were machined into standard V-notched Charpy bars. Each group was tested over a range of temperatures on a 217 ft-lb Charpy machine. The energies necessary to fracture the bars and the percentage fibrous fracture of each bar were recorded. The transition temperatures were obtained from a plot of the percentage fibrous fracture as a function of testing temperature. They were taken as the lowest point on these curves at which the fracture was 100 pct fibrous. The transition temperatures for both embrittled and unembrittled specimens are presented in Fig. 1 as function of the hardness. It will be noticed in this figure that the point for the unembrittled condition at 21 Rockwell C is out of line. These specimens were tempered for 4 hr at 675 °C and this point indicated that under isothermal conditions at this temperature, as is well known, embrittlement may develop fast enough to more than offset the effects of softening. From this data, it was concluded that the difference between transition temperatures for the embrittled and unembrittled conditions at any given hardness, within the range of Rockwell C 24 % to 32lh, is constant. It is also concluded that, within the hardness range studied, the transition temperatures for embrittled and unembrittled specimens rise in a parallel fashion with an increase in hardness. "Every year during the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Annual Meeting in Washington D.C., the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) National Geotechnical Team (NGT) takes time to talk about what we are doing in research, training development and policy support. At times, I have jokingly referred to it as the State of the Program Address, but we do see it as an important opportunity to update our transportation partners on priorities and needs for the program.This update is really a snapshot of the program during the previous year, with a look at projects that are currently active. Activities undertaken by the NGT are funded from multiyear roadmaps maintained by the FHWA program and research offices, and reflect trends and opportunities affecting and influencing transportation geotechnics now and in the future. The roadmaps identify activities in research, development, guidance, technology transfer and training that will be accomplished by the NGT through and beyond FY 2020 in eight broadly-defined focus areas: • Extreme events, geohazards and sustainable geotechnics• Performance management• Reliability-based design and construction• Advanced geotechnical modeling• Alternative delivery methods• Design and construction optimization• Site characterization• Quality assuranceThe process to identify focus areas and to develop activities that will be addressed by the NGT is guided and informed through input from the FHWA NGT members, and considers feedback and input from State Departments of Transportation (DOTs), FHWA Division offices, industry and academia. This process is revisited annually to review not only the activities that are currently funded, or will be funded, but also to review the relevance of the focus areas with respect to the future needs of the FHWA, State DOTs and the transportation community.In 2016, the NGT was successful in delivering several products that will advance the state of the practice and that better support policy. Products developed included research reports, design and construction guidance, and training courses. In 2017, the research and program offices will continue to work on projects that fit within our prioritized plan and that positively impact the geotechnical community as a whole. A listing of recently completed and currently active projects is provided below."

This report describes the tri-n-butyl phosphate extraction of cerium (IV) from a sulfate leach liquor prepared from a bastnaesite concentrate as well as from pure eerie nitrate solutions. The work was done on a laboratory scale using separatory funnels. Extraction from pure cerium solutions entailed no great difficulties; however, extraction from the bastnaesite solution proved more difficult, mainly because of the inhibiting effect of the sulfate ion. Despite this, procedures were developed for obtaining good single-state cerium extraction (95+ percent) and a high-purity product (99+ percent), although the maximization of both cannot be achieved simultaneously. This necessitates a compromise in any extraction scheme.

"A three dimensional nonlinear finite element model was constructed to simulate and analyze the behavior of large diameter segmentally lined shafts when subjected to seismic waves. To reduce computation time, a less complex shell model was also constructed. Transient excitation was applied to the supported nodes of both models, at the base of the shaft, with a time-function representing the 1994 Northridge earthquake. The models are developed at the end of an original phased construction-stage analysis of the shaft. Displacements, forces and moments are monitored and compared during the analyses steps. During the initial 15 seconds of the earthquake, the top and bottom of the shaft show similar displacements. The maximum horizontal displacement within the shaft is approximately 3.5 inches in the solid model and the shell model results conform to this by a factor of 50%. Keywords: Segmentally Lined Shaft, Soil Structure Interaction, Seismic Analysis, Finite Element Modeling, Ground Modification INTRODUCTION TO SEGMENTALLY LINED SHAFTS Large diameter segmentally lined shafts (SLS) are underground systems, constructed sequentially using precast concrete segments to form a ring which provides both temporary earth support during excavation and permanent structural support. The segments are connected via alignment pins, bolts, packer material and other structural components that ensure the continuity of the SLS. In this analysis, the construction process uses a top-down sequence wherein each soil layer is excavated, damp-proofing is installed and concrete segments are assembled to form each ring. This process is repeated until design depths are achieved completing the shaft. It is known that cylindrical structures sustain lateral (earth) pressure mainly through the mechanism of hoop-stress. As Timoshenko’s ring theory goes, a cylinder shell structure is prone to buckling under external pressure [1]. In typical designs of small diameter shafts and tunnel linings with small diameter to wall thickness ratios, nonlinear buckling analysis (i.e., nonlinear geometric analysis) is not considered, since the buckling capacities for those structures are much higher than typical pressures encountered at their design depths. However, in shafts with large diameter to wall thickness ratios, buckling could become a critical issue. In any given mode, as buckling occurs in a ring, some sections of the structure move inward while alternating sections protrude. Although the presence of the surrounding soil could mitigate the buckling by resisting the movement (Soil structure interaction) seismic loads can cause ground movements and lateral pressures, exceeding the capacity of the structure. It is therefore essential to design the load bearing capacities of the shaft to minimize the possibility of any catastrophic failure due to earthquakes. This study explores the structural response of the SLS when subjected to seismic loads."

For the first time, surface subsidence prediction theory was used to investigate roof movement around longwall face mining in a steeply dipping coal seam. A physical simulation experiment was conducted to quantitatively study the roof migration patterns, the gob materials, and the characteristics of bed separation and compression caused by mining two adjacent panels to gain a better understanding of ground control issues in multipanel mining in steeply dipping seam. This approach provides an in-depth analysis of the movement of the roof. Compared to movement observation of survey point using total station, the Photogrammetry Analysis for Physical Modeling of Mine Subsidence Program (PAPMMSP) method is easier to perform, faster and yields the much higher accuracy required for scale physical modeling. It is also a more effective observation method for underground-mining physical simulation experiments.

INTRODUCTION The components of the radiological hazard in uranium mines are: 1. exposure to radon and its short-lived daughters 2. exposure to long-lived ore dust 3. external irradiation With usual ventilation rates, the dosimetry relative to the first component only requires to know each miner&apos;s exposure to a potential energy of short-lived radon daughters, (EXP[a]). Presently in France, (EXP [a]) is determined monthly from radon concentration measurements. This is an indirect method based on ambient monitoring. After technical improvements achieved during the last years it is now possible to measure (EXP [a] directly with an individual portable monitor developed by the CEA. The purpose of this study is to analyze and compare monitoring results obtained by these methods. DETERMINATION OF INDIVIDUAL MONTHLY EXPOSURES TO[ a] POTENTIAL ENERGY OF SHORT-LIVED RADON DAUGHTERS [(EXP a) amb, by ambient monitoring] In this case, it is necessary to know individual monthly exposures to radon, (EXP Rn). As mentioned by Pradel, J.,et al., 1976, (EXP Rn) is estimated for each worker from informations both on radon concentrations (CRn) measured as described by Pradel, J., 1962 and times (t) elapsed in the various workplaces. (EXP Rn) is obtained by summing up the elementary radon exposures CRn x t relative to all the workplaces where the miner was successively engaged during the month. (EXP Rn) values are then corrected by an average equilibrium factor of 0.17 deduced from many measurements and taken as representative for all the French mines. Finally: [ ] (EXP [a])ind are obtained directly with an individual portable instrument described by Chapuis, A.M., et al., 1972. Samples of the air breathed by the miners are pumped continuously and radioactive aerosols containing the short-lived radon daughters are trapped on a filter. The principle of the measurement lies on track-etch detection of the a particles emitted by the deposited material. The technical aspects have been described by Duport, P., et al., 1980a, Mouden, A., et al., 1980 and Chapuis, A.M., 1980. As mentioned by Duport, P., et al., 1980, fiability is good. Indications on measurement reproducibility are given by Pradel, J., et al., 1977. PRESENTATION OF THE STUDY The underground miner population of a French mine was followed during a period of 8 months (October 1978 - May 1979). Monthly exposure values for each miner determined either by ambient or individual monitoring, (EXP [a])amb or (EXP[ a])ind, had been previously collected by Le Gac, J., 1980, who had also defined miner categories according to the characteristics of the work performed. Four groups are considered here, the "whole mine" and three categories as described in table 1. Data on the individual monthly exposures,(EXP [a])ind and (EXP [a])amb, were taken again to analyze the individual cumulative exposures instead of the "month by month" values. The influence of the mean habits of each individual on its surveillance results is thus taken into account. Each miner has a cumulative exposure as an individual of the "whole mine" and as an individual of each category in which he has worked. The results obtained by ambient or individual monitoring were analyzed (characteristics and adjustements of the distributions) and then compared (description of the discrepancies observed). Obviously, such a study is possible only if all the exposures are cumulated on a same duration. As miners have not worked during the same number of months in the course of the data collecting period, one must considerer the individual average monthly exposures, [(EXP a)]amb and[ (EXP a)]ind, instead of the individual cumulative exposures, which is typically the same thing. To be sure that the exposure values of a given group (A, B, C or D) are representative, only those miners really present for at least 3 months in this group were taken into account. Finally, each individual of the "whole mine" and of the various work categories has a pair of average monthly exposure values : [(EXP a)amb] determined by ambient monitoring and[ (EXP a)ind] deduced from the track-etch recording of the individual portable monitor.
