"INTRODUCTION The Sullivan Mine was examined by Thomas L. Chapman, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in March 1943. Samples taken from the few mineralized exposures justified further investigation of the property. To determine whether extensive exploration of the property would be warranted, the Bureau did a small amount of trenching and underground work during April 1943, 3/ under Bureau project 1462.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its, primary objective the, more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratary project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Cable bolting is a relatively new strata reinforcement technique that has been used successfully in Australia and the United Kingdom. Jim Walter Resources, Inc. has examined the principles and can visualize its useful application in many areas, such as: a) Longwall pull-out areas, b) Roadway junctions, particularly those involving yield pillars, c) Rib reinforcement, and d) Possible replacement of cribbing in roadways, especially longwall tailgates. This paper describes the conditions which led to cable bolt testing, the results of tests conducted to date, and conclusions about the direction that Jim Walter Resources, Inc. is heading as far as testing and potential applications are concerned.

An alternative use for recycling of waste from bag house of iron ore sinter plant was tested by producing and evaluating" at laboratory scale, the self reducing cold bonded pellets. This waste was characterized and the self-reducing pellets were produced using anthracite coal fines as reductant and Portland cement or hydrated lime/Blast Furnace slag as binder. It was used the molar ratio of Fe2O3/C (fix) equal to 3. Evolution of cold strength with curing time, for different contents of binder, was evaluated. Cold strength of 200N/pellet was obtained, for sinter dust, after 10 days of curing. Suitable hot strength was also presented and no decrepitation and swelling were observed. Good fractional reduction was obtained at 950°C and 1137°C. These results show that this material may be used by the Self-Reducing Processes for hot metal production, as an alternative route for this dust destination.

As part of the Bureau of Mines program for conserving domestic mineral resources, a survey was made of the methods used for identifying scrap metals. Because of the large number of alloys currently being scrapped, correct identification of these materials is essential if they are to be recycled effectively. The methods and instruments used to identify scrap metals are described and evaluated. These include object recognition, color, density, magnetic testing, spark testing, chemical spot testing, thermoelectric measurements, eddy current measurements, and elemental analysis by chemical and instrumental methods. Other potential techniques are discussed also.

JIGGING is the stratification of a mass of solid particles in upward pulsations of water or in alternating upward and downward pulsa¬tions. The stratification usually is effected in a rectangular open¬top container having a perforated bottom through which the pulsations of water are applied to the materials to be separated; in separating coal, to a mass of coal and refuse. Jigging usually is a continuous process involving three steps: (1) the reception of the raw coal, (91) the stratification of the coal and refuse so that the refuse settles to the screen plate, and (3) the overflow of the cleaned coal and the withdrawal of the refuse collected on the screen. The jig is the most universal washer ever devised. It is handling in practice a wide range of closely sized coals and ores, mixed sizes of coal from 8-in. to 0 through %-in. to 0, and mixed sizes of ores down to %3 O-in. to 0 and even smaller. It is treating materials ranging in specific gravity from that of gold at 19 to that of coal at 1.30. It is handling feeds in which the proportions of high-gravity materials range from 90 per cent or higher, as for some iron ores, to 10 percent or less for some coals. It is handling feeds containing all shapes of particles-round, rectangular, and flat. It is handling simple separation problems and difficult separation problems. Thus, it is an almost universal separating device. One might add that it has been one of the most misunderstood types of washers, from both a theoretical and a practical point of view. Although con¬siderable progress has been made in coal jigging in the past 10 years, the jig probably has more unexplored possibilities than any other type of washer. In this chapter the object has been to treat the jigging process in a practical manner and to give information that will help the reader to improve his particular operation. Inasmuch as performance data from operating plants would contribute little of value, none has been given. Instead, the emphasis is upon jigging principles as a foundation for attacking the problems that arise. These principles are in reality tenta¬tive conclusions from research in the field of jigging during the past 10 years and most of this chapter should be regarded as a progress report on an investigation still under way.

During the calendar year 1927 the United States Bureau f Mines conducted, for the third consecutive year, a safety contest among more than 250 mines and quarries. Aside from its underlying purpose to promote safety, the object of the contest was to learn which mine or quarry had completed the year's work with the smallest proportionate loss of time from accidents to its employees. Competing companies were grouped into five classes, namely, anthracite mines, bituminous teal mines, metal mines, nonmetallic mineral mines, and quarries and open-pit mines. To the winning company in each group was awarded the bronze trophy "Sentinels of Safety," the gift of The Explosives Engineer magazine. The winner in each group was the mine or quarry whose record showed the smallest loss of time from accidents in proportion to the total amount of time worked by 411 employees. This proportion is designated the "accident-severity"3 rate; it indicates the number of days of disability resulting from personal injuries per thousand man-hours of work performed by all employees. Each company's standing was determined by the Bureau of Mines from detailed records furnished by the contestants. Records of the leading companies were made known to a committee of seven men well known to the mining industry but not connected with the Bureau of Mines. This committee selected the winning companies in accordance with rules governing the Competition. According to the contest rules, the competition for the trophy was restricted to mines employing at least 50 men underground and to quarries and open-pit mines employing at least 25 men in the pit. As several plants fell below these figures during the year, their records could not be considered in connection with the award of the trophy. Figures covering these plants are, however, included in the attached tables.

It also recom¬mends that rock-dust barriers be used to sectionalize the mine as additional defense; but these should not be regarded as a substitute for generalized rock-dusting."" The Appalachian coal region is an area here the small mining operation dominates. The large number of small operations makes the coal industry in chat area very competitive, the industry concentration ratio being low. This feature is reflected in the nature and behavior of the coal supply and demand viz a viz the coal market. The vast majority of the small coal operations in Eastern Kentucky for example, are contractors. The circumstances under which a large mining company can elect to use contractors to supplement their coal production are examined. The pros and cons of small underground single unit mines and larger multiple unit mines are discussed.

"The magnetic properties of the magnetic materials were deeply dependent on the microstructures. In this study, the novel technique to produce the desired microstructures in a controlled manner was proposed. The technique consisted of the production of the amorphous alloys and the control of the crystallization process. The technique was applied to improve the magnetic properties of Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets. The microstructural control of the magnets exhibited the excellently high energy-products of higher than 430 kJm-1. The relationship between the magnetic properties and the microstructures of the Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets was discussed.IntroductionThe intrinsic properties of the materials are basically determined by the properties of the constituent elements or the compounds. However, it is often noticed the difference between the observed properties and the theoretical values expected from the intrinsic properties of the materials. This indicates that the observed properties of the materials are determined not only by the properties of the constituent elements. In other words, the observed properties of the materials are also strongly dependent on the morphology of materials. This means that the microstructural control may creates a great improvement of the properties of materials.In Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets, the superiority arises from the uniaxial intermetallic Nd2Fe14B compound which has a large saturation magnetization and a high anisotropy field [1,2]. The magnetic properties of the Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets are dependent on the microstructure, that is, the size, shape and degree of the crystallographic alignment of the Nd2Fe14B phase. Currently, the Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets have been produced by either sintering or melt-spinning [3,4]. In the sintered magnets, alignment of the Nd2Fe14B phase is achieved by the prior green compaction of the crushed ingot powders in an applied magnetic field [3]. In the melt-spinning approach, alignment of the Nd2Fe14B phase is achieved by hot deformation [5]. Amorphous melt-spun ribbons are comminuted and then are consolidated into bulk form by hot pressing before hot deformation. As-hot-pressed magnets have randomly oriented Nd2Fe1~ grains [6]. Subsequent die upsetting of as-hot-pressed magnets gives rise to the crystallographic alignment of the Nd2Fe14B phase."

In hybrid foundation system or piled raft foundation (PRF), the raft has adequate bearing capacity and piles are usually required to ensure overall stability of foundation and also to act as settlement reducer for high rise structures. When piles are connected to the raft, a high axial stress may develop and one alternative is to disconnect the piles from raft and consider them as stiffeners for supporting soil. This system is known as disconnected piled raft foundation (DCPRF). Cushion, a compacted coarse grained soil layer, can be used beneath the raft to redistribute and adjust the stress ratio of piles to subsoil and plays an important role in mobilizing the bearing capacity of subsoil and modifying the load transfer mechanism of piles. In this study, finite element method (FEM) has been employed to investigate the effect of different parameters such as cushion stiffness, gap height, raft thickness and piling configuration on the behavior of disconnected piled raft foundation. The analysis is performed on different foundations of hypothetical and real case histories. Results indicate that increasing the raft thickness reduces the differential settlement and pile head axial stress. Concentrating the longer disconnected piles similar to connected ones beneath the central area of raft, decreases settlement of raft. With increasing cushion stiffness, vertical stress ratio of piles to subsoil increases, but settlement decreases. Increasing gap height from 0.1 m to 1 m decreases the vertical stress ratio of piles to subsoil.

This review is based on a questionnaire sent out to 24 Canadian exploration companies, known to be active in the mineral exploration field, concerning their practice in the use of applied geochemical techniques in Precambrian terrains. Of the companies questioned, 16 returned completed questionnaires and of these, ten companies stated that they had some experience in this type of work. Of the companies who did not answer or return the questionnaire in time I know that at least three have been quite heavily engaged in applied geochemical work in the glaciated Precambrian areas. I also know that these three companies have been reasonably successful in their ventures, so I feel the following figures and opinions are, if anything, on the pessimistic side. Before continuing with the paper I would like to express my personal thanks to the Chief Geologists, Geologists and Exploration Managers of the various companies who cooperated in making this review possible by answering the questionnaires and making available summaries of their work in the glaciated terrains. Of the companies who stated that they had no experience in geochemical prospecting in glaciated Precambrian areas it is interesting to note that only two have reported that they do not use applied geochemistry at all. Two companies have reported that they make use of applied geochemistry in New Brunswick in areas of-light glaciation. Their opinion is that it is a useful aid to other techniques in evaluating mineralized areas.

(communication to the Secretary*).—In that part of Mr. Wilson's paper describing the Gilman cut-and-fill system, a few features do not appear to be fully explained. In what way is the waste used for filling obtained? The text mentions that if waste is encountered when driving the filling raises, these raises are stopped until the fill is needed; that seems to suggest mining the capping for fill, which might make the backs of the stopes bad as the stopes approach the top of the ore. If, on the other hand, the fill is brought to the raises in cars, are the crosscuts that are necessary in ore or waste? Is the cost of this fill included in the stoping costs given? The second, or lower, series of stopes will present a different problem to that which the first series (under the capping) gave. Although no mention is made in the text, it would seem that the second series of stopes will have to be worked on center lines which are offset half the stope width, 20 ft., from the centers of the stopes above, in order to take advantage of the "rafter" effect of the stringers so named. How is the fill to be introduced into the lower stopes? There are no crosscuts mentioned to provide for this; or is it intended to tap the filled stopes above for the fill? In the latter case the method of control of this fill will be of interest. Ore that will admit of a stoping width of 40 ft. with the lengths mentioned in the description is stronger than any with which many mining men are familiar. We are currently studying the effects on recrys-tallization of impurities diffused into dispersion-hardened alloys. Our interest in this phenomenon was originally aroused by the observation that the recrystallization temperature range of tungsten "doped" with alumina and silica, or with thoria, is lowered drastically if nickel is plated onto the tungsten prior to heat treatment.' In this note, we report a similar effect that sulfur has on the recrystallization behavior of thoriated nickel. The experimental procedure for this exploratory phase of the investigation has consisted simply in heating commercially obtained stress-relieved samples of thoriated nickel for varying temperatures and times in sealed capsules containing air and small quantities of sulfur. The samples contain 2.4 vol pct thoria and initially less than 18 ppm S by weight; they are prepared either from 0.5-in.-ciiam rod stock or from 0.092-in. sheet and are in the "as-received" (stress-relieved) condition prior to exposure. In an atmosphere free of sulfur, such samples do not show evidence of recrystallization after being annealed for 1 hr at a temperature of 2500°F (1372C).2 The photomicrograph in Fig. 1 shows the microstructure of one of our samples annealed for 75 hr at 1000° C (1832°F) in a sulfur-free capsule. The grain structure is hardly evident (if at all) at 465 times magnification. In contrast, the photomicrograph of Fig. 2 shows the recrystallization that has taken place in a sample exposed to sulfur for 5 hr at 1000°C (1832°F). A nickel sulfide phase is visible at the grain boundaries of the light-appearing grains. We have also observed recrystallization to occur in a sample annealed at 600°C (1112°F) for 25 hr. This temperature is below the 637°C (1178°F) eutectic in the Ni-S system. In the latter case, no nickel sulfide phase is evident in the microstructure. Moreover, we have noticed the occur-

This report describes the development of a dynamic strain gage and a companion amplifier and recording camera -an apparatus designed to pick up and record the strain waves produced in rock by a nearby explosion. Also included in the report is a discussion of the relationships connecting the strain with the displacement, velocity, and acceleration for both plane and spherical waves. The proposed tests for which the strain gages were intended required making measurements in solid rock, a factor that necessitated the development of a gage that could be inserted and anchored in a small-diameter diamond-drill hole. The restriction on the diameter of the drill hole is required so that the presence of the hole in the medium will not influence the propagation of the strain wave. The gage should respond with fidelity to the frequencies present in a wave pulse generated by the nearby detonation of a small quantity of high-velocity explosive. Preliminary tests showed that this frequency range extends from 200 to 10,000 c.p.s. or greater. Also, the gage should be capable of measuring strains ranging from a few micro-inches per inch to several thousand micro-inches per inch. Other desirable design specifications included a low gage output impedance to permit the use of long cables, and a low gage cost, particularly in view of the fact that for the final design none of the gages can be recovered from the medium.

Discussion of the paper of R. DAWSON HALL, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 105, September, 1915, pp. 2013 to 2021. R. DAWSON HALL, New York, N. Y.-The general practice in the past has been to view the roof as being somewhat subject only to shear. In fact the action of the roof under the stress of its own weight has been but little considered, not because the matter is unimportant but because it is so complicated that it has been felt that an analysis of it would not result in any conclusions definite enough to justify the inquiry. The result has been that the consideration of the subject has fallen into the hands of persons who are not experts in the study of beam and plate stress. They have been disposed naturally to view the destruction of the roof as the outcome of the simplest of stresses-vertical shear. In the lack of a careful consideration of the conditions of roof fracture it was thought that the roof consisted of a number of horizontal layers, which were each of them weak, because, no matter how strong they might be they usually lacked sufficient depth. This view of the condition of the roof would naturally lead one to expect that it would yield to bending moment, the various layers succumbing one by one to their lack of the necessary radius of gyration to meet such severe stresses. Conference themes are usually chosen by organizers to reflect the current state of the industry. The Colorado Section MPD came up with what may be the most appropriate theme of a mining conference during the last few years. The local SME MPD section’s theme of its 56th annual conference was “The Wild, Wild World of Mining.” The current boom can be felt in all aspects of the industry, including exploration, mining, processing, sustainability, and economic and political issues. Each of the 25 speakers at the conference, held in Colorado Springs, CO, touched on how the boom has impacted each of those aspects. The meeting attracted about 110 people from around the world.

"In order to recover nickel ion in a spent electroless nickel - phosphorus alloy plating bath and, at the same time, to remove impurities such as iron and zinc, the applicability of solvent extraction with LlX84I as the extractant has been investigated using actual spent solution. Although the extraction efficiency of nickel from the spent solution is considerably lower than that from the nickel sulfate-nitrate solution, nickel in the spent solution is selectively extracted with high efficiency at the pH of 6 - 7. The extracted nickel is effectively stripped by sulfuric acid at a pH of less .than· 3. On the basis of these results, a· flowsheet for recovering nickel from the spent solution is proposed Chemical equilibrium calculations of the spent solution has shown that the complex formations of nickel with anions such as lactate and phosphonate ions become predominant in the pH range between 2 and 6. This results in the depression of nickel extraction efficiency from the spent solution as compared with that from the .nickel sulfate-nitrate solution. By combining these aqueous equilibrium calculations with the· extraction model considering the extraction stoichiometry and the aggregation of the extractant in the organic phase, the extraction behavior of nickel is quantitatively predicted.IntroductionElectroless plating is indispensable for the recent advanced industries such as the electronic and mechanical industries. Electroless plating baths are repeatedly used by supplying the metal salts; however, the accumulation of the counter anions of the metal ions, the components formed by the oxidation of the reducing reagents in the plating baths, and the metal ions as impurities dissolved from the surface of the objective materials degrades the· quality of the plating. Thus, the baths are finally treated by a precipitation method to form a large amount of metal sludge, which is disposed in dumping sites. Therefore, from the standpoints of environmental protection and resource preservation, it is highly desired to establish a recycling process of the plating baths with minimum emission. Solvent extraction seems to be one of the 'suitable methods to recover metals from the spent electroless plating baths, because the concentration of the metal ion in the baths is relatively high, which is advantageous to solvent extraction as compared with the ion-exchange and adsorption methods. Some studies about the application of solvent extraction have already been carried out using simulated spe11t electroless plating baths [1-3]."

"In-situ observation of unidirectional solidification using transparent substance has been performed to investigate the growth direction of solid phase. Cell or dendrite of which preferred growth direction is not parallel to the heat flow direction was observed with various solidification conditions. Dimensionless growth direction (p) changes from 0 to 1 with increasing growth velocity at a constant temperature gradient. Introducing the dimensionless growth velocity, the relation between p and growth condition could be correlated.IntroductionTransition in macroscopic solidified structure from chill to columnar zone which is found in normal castings takes place via grain selection1). Cast products such as turbine blades are unidirectionally solidified, grain selection plays an important role to choose suitable crystals which have reasonable orientation in the region called ""starter"", which is a very initial part of casting2). Therefore, grain selection is a very important process in the formation of casting structure. The present authors have been studying on the process of grain selection using succinonitrile, which is a transparent organic substance and have found that the growth distance necessary for grain selection depends upon the solidification condition3-5). When the solid/liquid interface is dendritic, the grain selection occurs quickly. On the other hand, when the solid/liquid interface is cellular, it occurs slowly. We supposed that the growth direction of dendrite is different from that of cell when the substance is unidirectionally solidified. Indeed, Kurz and Fisher wrote in their text book that dendrite grows along its preferred growth direction, <100>, regardless of heat flow direction and that cell grows along heat flow direction regardless of its preferred growth direction1). However, there is no quantitative description about the growth direction when the solid/liquid interfacial morphology is cellular. Furthermore, there have been little works6) to study the growth direction of cell and dendrite."

Stress has a significant effect on the stability of pillars. In order to get an accurate picture of pillar stability, one needs information not only on the primary Stress distribution but also on all the Subsequent Stress changes as time passes. Sonic methods are some of the fastest, most economical and least destructive means of stress prediction. The wave propagation velocity has long been applied to the investigation of the upper mantle and crust stress. Recently, it has also been applied to the prediction of rock bursts and to mine site investigations. Another parameter for investigating stresses in rocks is the attenuation coefficient. Attenuation has been observed to be more sensitive to stress changes than wave velocity; however, the measurement of attenuation is more difficult than that of wave velocity. In this paper, the mechanism of sonic attenuation in rock is reviewed. Both the velocity and the attenuation of sound waves in five different rock types under various stress fields were examined in the laboratory. It was found that for a specific rock type the relationship between the velocity ratio and stress, as well as that between the attenuation coefficient ratio and stress, can be expressed by simplified second order polynomial equations.Research showed the attenuation coefficient to be more sensitive to stress change than the velocity ratio. A field investigation method was proposed using a Schmidt hammer as a repeatable energy source. Initial trials appeared to show that monitoring by the wave attenuation method gave more repeatable data than monitoring wave velocity.

Several inorganic reagents and organic polymers were tested as depressants in the single mineral flotation of ultrafine iron oxide and hydroxylapatite with Dowfroth 250 as a frother. It was observed that the inorganic reagents and the low molecular weight polymers generally caused dispersion of the ultrafine particles, and consequently their recovery into froth products more or less equaled the recovery of water. On the other hand, the high molecular weight polymers caused different degrees of flocculation of the ultrafine particles, and their recoveries were much lower than the recovery of water. These observations pointed to a need to re-define flotation depressants in fine particle flotation. The traditional definition of a flotation depressant, i.e., to make particle surfaces hydrophilic by forming a hydrophilic film and/or by removing collector and activator coatings, is sufficient for relatively coarse particles. However, to prevent fine and ultrafine particles from floating, a successful depressant should not only make the particles hydrophilic, but also enlarge the particle sizes so that they do not enter the froth product by mechanical entrainment. Polymeric depressants are ideal for these purposes.
