Shovels and excavators have significant blind spots due to their large sizes, increasing the chances of collision with other surrounding equipment such as haul trucks, loaders, and dozers. While a camera surveillance system is very useful in preventing collision, it can benefit from two additional features: (i) the ability to display the distance of the closest object within the view, and more importantly (ii) the ability to warn the operator if objects are getting too close. After a comparison between few different technologies, it is explained how these features can be provided by integrating rugged pulsar radar sensors with a camera system. The specific radar technology is already field proven in the harsh mining environments. Motion Metrics International Corp. has developed this exact product, which combines its 4-camera surveillance system (ViewMetricsTM) with a series of rugged radar sensor elements, named ViewMetricsTM-Radar. The radar system employs intelligent CAN bus communication to reduce wiring, hence improving hardware reliability with built-in troubleshooting features. A USB connection is the only hardware bridge between the radar sensors and the embedded computer. As such, an existing ViewMetricsTM system can be easily upgraded to ViewMetricsTM-Radar. As addition of new interfaces to the cab could result in operator distraction, this paper explains how ViewMetricsTM-Radar reduces distraction compared to other radar collision prevention systems.

"Seismic waves from explosions can be used to characterize physical processes in and around the source. The quantification of absolute levels of ground motion is important for minimizing impact on nearby people and structures. We contrast work in characterizing seismic radiation from contained nuclear explosions with ground motions from multiple explosion quarry blasts. A physical basedunderstanding of the explosion source function allows prediction and extrapolation to new environments where experimental data may not exist."

This paper describes the local estimation of mineral inventory by kriging. A mineral deposit located between two working levels of a copper mine was examined. Data for this estimation was obtained by underground diamond drilling. The mineral inventory that was computed by this method was compared to the results obtained by global estimation techniques, which were based on information front surface boreholes. A comparison between the ore reserves estimated through kriging and the ore reserves estimated at the mine using conventional methods was also made. This analysis shows that geostatistical methods can be applied to evaluate base-metal deposits similar to the deposit examined in this study. In the part of the mine that was examined, the kriging estimates show an overall increase in metal content at all cutoff grades, compared to the estimates obtained through conventional methods. Also, the ore body profiles are more continuous and regular through kriging, but they are not radically different from the profiles that were previously obtained at the mine. However, the global estimate of the deposit using kriging could not provide reliable results.

The Mt Wright Underground Mine is located near the town of Ravenswood in North Queensland and is operated by Carpentaria Gold – a wholly owned subsidiary of Resolute Mining Limited. Following the evolution of the mine plan through a number of stages, the ‘sublevel shrinkage (SLS) with continuous fill’ mining method was implemented in 2010 to extract the Mt Wright orebody. The production front in this mining method is similar to a sublevel cave (SLC) operation; however, backfill is placed into the top of the production zone as opposed to requiring the overlying strata to cave.Continuous fill to replace the void created by extracting the ore was required to manage the potential risks associated with the proximity of infrastructure to the footwall, associated long-term stability and air blast potential due to the limited ‘cavability’ of the material within the cave zone. The available fill material was sourced from a disused waste dump from a previous open pit operation, which introduced further technical and economic risks associated with dilution from ‘no grade’ broken material. Procedures and processes to manage these risks have been incorporated into the operation of the mine.Despite encountering a number of challenges, the SLS method has been in use for approximately three years at Mt Wright and has proven to be viable economically, technically and operationally. This paper will discuss the challenges encountered and what was done to overcome them, the operational and financial performance to date, along with the outcomes of some successful continuous improvement projects that have improved the efficiency of the operation.CITATION:Mackay, D, Long, S and Koen, A J, 2014. Aperam is a global player in producing of stainless, electrical and special steel qualities. The steelmaking plant in Timoteo Brasil is equipped with one AODconverter for stainless steel and one MRPL-converter for special steel production. After almost 20 years of operation Aperam decided to exchange the existing 80 t MRP-L converter by a new one including a new trunnion ring and a state of the art suspension system. Due to an optimized design the inner volume of the new converter could be increased which comes along with improved production. A special feature is a flange connection in the barrel section of the converter. This allowed to avoid any critical site welding and the time between shut down of the old and cold commissioning of the new converter could be done with 17 days only.

However, use of longwall systems during the past 10 years has increased much more slowly than was anticipated. This paper reports the results of flammability studies for methane, propane. hydrogen, and deuterium gases in air conducted by the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. Knowledge of the explosion hazards of these gases is important to the coal mining industry and to other industries that produce or use flammable gases. The experimental research was conducted in 20 L and 120 L closed explosion chambers under both quiescent and turbulent conditions, using both electric spark and pyrotechnic ignition sources. The data reported here generally confirm the data of previous investigators, but they are more comprehensive than those reported previously. The results illustrate the complications associated with buoyancy, turbulence, selective diffusion, and ignitor strength versus chamber size. Although the lower flammable limits (LFLs) are well defined for methane (CH,) and Propane (CA), the LFLs for hydrogen (HZ) and its heavier isotope deuterium (D2) are much more dependent on the limit criterion chosen. A similar behavior is observed for the upper flammable limit of propane. The data presented include lower and upper flammable limits, maximum pressures, and maximum rates of pressure rise. The rates of pressure rise, even when normalized by the cube root of the chamber volume (V 1/3), are shown to be sensitive to chamber size.

A seismic monitoring system was installed in 2005 at Dongguashan Copper Mine, the deepest metal mine in China. Based on the seismic events monitored in situ, the possibility of rockburst prediction and prevention is investigated in this paper. The characteristics of space-timeintensity of mining-induced seismicity and the seismic response to mining are studied in detail using the seismic data in Dongguashan Mine. A conceptual model and a criterion of assessment of hazard seismic nucleation are proposed for Dongguashan Mine. In this model, the mine seismic stiffness method is adopted for rockburst prediction within the framework of the unstable failure theory. To analyze rock failure cases in Donggauashan Mine, the rate of the ratio of stiffness of rock in nucleation area to its surrounding area is proposed as a criterion for rockburst prediction.

The U.S. economy was considerably stronger in 1976 than in 1974 or 1975. Real gross national product (GNP) rose sharply in the first quarter of 1976 and then increased at a more moderate rate for the remainder of the year. The unemployment rate fell until June and then increased for moat of the remainder of the year, finishing at the same rate as it had started the year. The inflation rate continued to decline in 1976. Reasons for the relatively low rate (compared with those of 1974 and 1975) included small increases in food prices and only moderate increases in energy prices. Total U.S. output measured in terms of GNP increased 11.6% in 1976. Real GNP in 1972 constant dollars rose 6.2%. Inflation as measured by the implicit price deflator increased 5.1%. In real terms, gross private domestic investment for residential structures rose 22.7% in 1976 after declining 14.7%a in 1975; State and local Government expenditures increased 1.4% in 1976; and personal consumption expenditures for services rose 4.5%. The Federal Reserve Board (FRB) index of industrial production increased 10.2%.

Results of preliminary research on the use of small diameter water jets at high pressure for cutting rocks has demonstrated the possibility of effective cutting of anthracite. Detailed research has, therefore, been conducted at the Skotchinsky Institute of Mining to study the dynamics and structure of the small water jets and the mechanism by which they cut coal. One of the objects of this research was to obtain data for the design of a machine for cutting rock, based on the same principles as that for cutting coal. The productivity of water jet mining machines depends on the hydro- dynamic parameters of the jet. Therefore, the research on small diameter water jets was directed, initially to a study of the nature of the variation of these parameters, and to obtain a profile of dynamic pressure distribution over the section of the jet. As has been confirmed previously, the required jet pressure (to cut coal) lies in the range of 100 to 500 atmospheres. These pressures were utilized for the research. The diameter of the nozzle was changed as ~follows; 0.97; 1.24; 1.5; 2.17; 2.87; and 3.57 mm. Graphs showing dynamic pressures for each nozzle diameter and varied axial dynamic pressure were obtained over distances ranging from 2 to 70 cm from the nozzle. One of the most important hydrodynamic parameters of a jet, closely related to the dynamics of jet disturbance in air, is the magnitude of the axial dynhmic pressure. A study of the variation in this pressure with increasing distance from the nozzle led to the separation of the jet into three specific parts, which differ from each other not only in the nature of the change in dynamic pressure, but also in structural properties.

This Tunnel Connection project will include construction of two short tunnels to connect the existing subway tunnels (Red and Blue lines) in the northern loop area of downtown Chicago through a new station. The Southeast Tunnel will connect the Red Line to the new station below the intersection of State and Washington Streets and the Northwest Tunnel will connect the Blue Line to the new station below the intersection of Dearborn and Randolph Streets. The connection tunnels are located in a very dense urban area of downtown Chicago and under several important historical buildings. Both tunnels are curved at the intersections and located at a depth of about 7.5 m below ground surface in saturated soft clay with an average undrained shear strength of approximately 25 kPa. The design calls for minimizing surface disruption and ground displacement while maintaining normal operation of the existing subways during the construction of the connections tunnels. This paper presents mining and cut and cover tunneling alternatives for the project.

Minerales Monclova S.A. de C.V. (MIMOSA) has applied different methane gas drainage technologies, according to the top industry requirements in order to keep the methane gas at the lowest possible concentration in our operations, both in the development sections and longwall sections. Our staff has used the horizontal rotary technique. In 2004 MIMOSA bought a re-built drill machine and signed a contract with Resource Enterprises Inc. (REI), which included a training program in Horizontal Directional Drilling using the reflex system. The training system was developed for a period of three months in Mine VII, with very good performance by the MIMOSA staff. After the training the equipment was moved to Esmeralda Mine, where we had already drilled holes at the development section, 2,500 ft. It was the longest distance that could be reached with our original equipment, obviously; the directional drilling program is another challenge for us and our staff, but we are very confident that our result will be better every time. We will be evaluating each borehole and expect to improve our results in each progressive borehole, until we can drill up to the capacity of the equipment. We are in the process of buying another drill with an electronic monitoring device (DD DMecca) in the following months.

The Homestake mine, located in western South Dakota, was discovered in 1876. The first reported production was in I 878. Total production through 1965 is 6,554,249 troy ounces of silver and 27,961,276 troy ounces of gold, worth $987,000,000 at present prices. Precambrian sedimentary formations at Lead total 20,000 feet. The Poorman Formation, the oldest, is chiefly ankerite carbonate. The Homestake Formation is iron-magnesium carbonate. The younger formations are argillaceous with some quartzites. The Cambrian Deadwood Formation unconformably overlies the Precambrian. All are cut by Tertiary intrusives. Sideroplesite schist of the Homestake Formation was converted to cummingtonite schist in the zones of higher-grade metamorphism. The Precambrian rocks show the effects of extreme isoclinal folding. A second stage of folding ( cross folds) may have been caused by the Tertiary intrusives. All folds plunge to the southeast. The Homestake ore bodies are pipe-like replacements of the Homestake Formation in zones of cross folding. It is believed that dilatation of the schists has increased permeability in these zones. Chloritization of the schists is the most widespread effect of the mineralization which is divided into four stages. Principal minerals of the first stage are quartz, chlorite, and arsenopyrite; in the second stage, quartz, ankerite, and pyrrhotite. In the third stage only pyrrhotite was deposited. The fourth stage followed the intrusions of Tertiary dikes and deposited mostly pyrite and calcite. Gold accompanies all stages and is always the last mineral to be deposited. It is most closely associated with arsenopyrite of the first stage but can be interpreted as having been deposited during the fourth stage and superimposed on the products of the earlier stages.

Over the past five years in coalmine slope evaluation the application of 3D modelling has increased significantly as software has become more user friendly but also areas requiring evaluation have become increasingly complex. Often simplistic 2D Limit Equilibrium modelling and analysis has been poorly used to solve slope stability issues by back analysis and subsequent forward predictive analysis. A plane strain condition with slope movement perpendicular to the slope strike is assumed where in reality the problem is more complex. This often leads to a misinterpretation of the failure mechanism because the failure mechanism being modelled in 2D does not generally represent the actual failure mechanism observed in the pit, with 2D modelling often oversimplifying a slope. This paper presents a case study where the initial slope assessment and remedial design evaluation was undertaken as a 2D Limit Equilibrium model which led to an overly conservative and costly remedial solution being implemented. Subsequent modelling of the slope using both 3D Limit Equilibrium and Finite Element methods were able to provide a better understanding of the structural complexities associated and correlate well with slope monitoring data to create a more realistic outcome.

In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 550-acre Carson-Iceberg Wilderness Study Area (NV-030-532), in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The Wilderness Study Area is located in Alpine County, CA, 11 mi southeast of Markleeville, CA. Tertiary volcanic and granitic rocks, as well as alluvium, underlie the area. Hydrothermal alteration and faulting have affected some rocks; argillic, silicic, and limonitic alteration are found, particularly near faults. No mineral resources were identified in the Wilderness Study Area. The area has one small pit and no mines or claims. Samples from the Wilderness Study Area and vicinity contained uneconomic amounts of gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, mercury, arsenic, and molybdenum. Mineral occurrences are too small and low grade to be of interest within the foreseeable future.

Author's Note: Since the paper on "All-Flotation at North Broken Hill Limited" was read and discussed, the metallurgical results obtained have conclusively justified the adoption of the All-Flotation treatment.At present the shipping grades of lead concentrate produced from North mine ore range between 74% and 75% Pb, carrying approximately 43 oz. Ag and 4.5%-5% Zn. The lead recovery in lead concentrate is recording 95%-96% of the lead content of crude ore, and the milling and treatment cost on 6400 tons crude ore perweek of 96 hours has dropped to 6s. 3.6d. per ton on ore. With an increased ore tonnage, and with a new mill, considerable further reduction in costs is certain.New flotation machines, with 30 in. vertical depth of overflow (instead of 42 in. depth), are now being tried for the secondary granular treatment, with advantageous results. The treatment to-day is practically the same as that outlined in the paper, excepting that additional concentrate is returned for retreatment in the existing units.(Signed) A. LOWRY.Mr. T. A.
