INTRODUCTION Where and how to spend the exploration dollar to net the greatest economic return, has always been a major problem for mining companies. Minerals are being consumed in ever increasing quantitie: throughout the world and the mining industry is being called on to meet this demand. In view of the present world-wide nationalistic trend, it is becoming more difficult to determine where exploration money can be spent most profitably. An exploration project should be evaluated continually--in the beginning, to define economic targets and later to determine, as early as possible, whether a project has a chance of developing into a venture that will make a profit acceptable to top management. At this point, a decision can be made whether or not to proceed with plans to bring in a new mine. Exploration, evaluation, and development, therefore, must be fully integrated in transforming an exploration project into a profitable mining venture. DEMAND FOR LEAD AND ZINC Lead and zinc are metals basic to our economy and the demand for them will continue to rise as the population in the world increases. If the population continues to grow at the present rate, it will about double by the year 2000. The accelerating demand for these metals is shown by statistics. Nearly half as much lead (48%) and more than half as much zinc (55%) have been mined between the two world wars as in all pre- ceding history. (1)

IN providing 65,000 tons of broken muck per day for shovel operation in a large open pit copper mine, drilling equipment and efficient use of that equipment is of prime importance. To improve existing drilling efficiencies, a large electric rotary drill capable of drilling 12-in. holes was purchased in May 1955. At Chino 96 pct of the blasting is done with 12-in. holes because: 1) the large holes break the optimum amount of material to reduce trackshifting to a minimum, 2) better fragmentation is obtained from a relatively short column of powder, and 3) longer spacing results in greater tonnage broken per foot drilled. From 1955, when it was purchased, through October 1956, the rotary drill has drilled 95,701 ft at a rate of 167.4 per shift in various locations and types of ground encountered in the mine. (This includes moving time and all other delays while a crew is on the machine.) The machine has been worked two shifts per day, seven days per week, and has been available 68 pct of this time.

Muito se tem estudado sobre materiais alternativos, como os compósitos de matriz polimérica reforçados por fibras lignocelulósicas. Isso se justifica pelo fato das fibras naturais terem vantagens no que tange ao meio ambiente, bem como relativo baixo custo. Além disso, a fibra natural apresenta características de interface com a matriz polimérica que favorecem as propriedades mecânicas pela estrutura do compósito. Esse presente trabalho objetiva analisar as propriedades de tração de compósitos de matriz de poliéster reforçados com 10,20 e 30% em fração volumétrica de fibras de cânhamo, que foram preparados alinhando as fibras em moldes e deixando-os curar por 24 horas em temperatura ambiente. Os corpos de prova foram testados numa máquina de ensaios Instron e os resultados mostraram um aumento na tensão máxima de ruptura com o aumento da porcentagem de fibra incorporada.

Due to the increasing environmental and public concerns over cyanidation, there has been a large amount of research into viable alternative lixiviants. Despite these studies, there is little published data directly comparing the kinetics of gold leaching for each of these alternatives: most of the literature is concerned with gold extraction from ores. This paper presents a detailed kinetic study of gold leaching in cyanide, armmonia/thiosulfate and chloride/hypochlorite solutions. The gold leach rates were measured using a rotating electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (REQCM). This instrument allows the mass of a gold sample to measured in?situ, with a sensitivity of less than 10 ng. From the results of these studies, it is possible to select experimental conditions where the leach rates of the alternative lixiviants are similar to that for the traditional cyanide system.

The Wangaloa coal mine closed in 1989, and an attempt to grow Pinus radiata on quartz-rich overburden dumps was not successful. The site is currently being rehabilitated with re-profiling and native plant establishment. Plants are being established in a range of substrates that consist of variably disaggregated Tertiary coal measure sediments derived from the mine sequence. This material has low organic matter content (typically <10 %), originating from coal fines or carbonaceous sediment. Substrate samples were collected during December 2003 from a range of sites varying in age, slope, and parent material. Nutrient analysis includes nitrate, ammonia, total N, total P, available P and readily exchangeable base cations. Total nitrogen and phosphorus are low on areas of recently disturbed, quartz-rich overburden, with total N =1200 mg/kg, and total P =200 mg/kg. Background forested areas have total N ranging between 2800 - 3300 mg/kg and total P of 420 - 500 mg/kg. Quartz-rich overburden sites contain available nitrogen levels of less than 6 mg/kg, while background forested areas are generally >20 mg/kg. The soils and water runoff are generally acid, with pH down to three. Water samples have been collected from both ground and surface resources on a monthly basis since December 2003. The main lake on the site had pH of 4.6 in 1999, and this remained relatively unchanged when 850 tonnes of lime were added in 2002. However, the lake pH changed to 6.4 within a one month period in 2004, and has fluctuated since that time.

Conventional concrete block plastered with a cementitious coating is the most common material used in the construction of permanent stoppings to direct airflow in underground mines in the US. All mines experience various degrees of strata convergence depending on depth of overburden, geological conditions, and type of roof support employed. Strata convergence will cause cracks and joint openings in masonry stoppings, resulting insignificant air leakage losses. Where strata convergence is severe, complete structural failure of the stopping can ultimately occur. Reconstruction of damaged or destroyed stoppings adds expensive overhead to mining operations, and even greater expenses are incurred from the additional fan horsepower required to overcome leakage losses. Ideally, a stopping should maintain high resistance to airflow while yielding to strata convergence. By properly incorporating a polyisocyanurate rigid foam material within the masonry block structure, stopping service life can be increased in mines experiencing strata convergence problems such as floor heave, roof loading, and lateral rib movement.

Several common ratios used for determining spontaneous combustion activity rely on comparing the amount of various products of oxidation with the amount of oxygen consumed to produce these products. As coal gets hotter, oxidation reactions become more efficient meaning more products produced for less oxygen consumed. There are many problems associated with accurately determining the true amount of oxygen used. These problems relate to the monitoring technique (and its associated uncertainties) used to generate the results, deficiencies in the established equations utilized in calculations, dilution with other gases and other sources of oxygen depletion. Typically the oxygen deficiency is over estimated, resulting in the under estimation of the indicating ratio. For this reason the use of ?one off? calculations to determine the status of the underground environment is not recommended. Instead trends of these ratios should be used to identify increases which indicate an increase in oxidation intensity. This paper outlines problems associated with the monitoring techniques and equations used to determine the oxygen deficiency.

Coal is one of our oldest known commodities. Historic evidence indicates that this fossil-formed fuel was used in China and in Wales some 3000 to 4000 pears ago. Coal was discovered in North America in 1679 by French explorers in northern Illinois, and in 1700 a colony of Huguenots came across bituminous coal in Virginia. One might think by this long history of a single commodity that the string was about played out. Quite the contrary, coal is in greater demand than ever before and coal mining today is a modern industry. It is in an unprecedented growth period as the nation-and the world-demands more and more energy coincident with dwindling reserves of other fossil fuels. By the year 2000 the demand for coal is expected to at least double the current level of some 600 million tons annually despite the advent of nuclear power. To meet this challenge, the coal industry is vitally in need of an increasing supply of technically trained and progressive manpower. And, coupled with a serious shortage of engineers and technicians, it represents a rich vein of occupation opportunities-all the way up to top career levels. Today, coal mining is a complex, highly specialized industry concerned with more than just getting coal from the earth and putting it into the furnaces of the consumer. The industry is concerned with the environment, with maintaining a viable ecology. Recognizing the ramifications of global economics, the industry is very much aware of its important position in contributing to a constantly rising standard of living throughout the world. The key to rewarding employment in the coal industry is skill-skill that has been developed by education, training, and experience. None of these alone is enough; all three are necessary today to produce the skill needed to meet the employment requirements of the coal industry. Routine manual labor will no longer do the job in coal mining. Nas indústrias petroquímicas, nucleares e farmacêuticas o avanço tecnológico tem como objetivo a segurança e confiabilidade dos equipamentos com relação à resistência mecânica e à corrosão. Atualmente, o uso dos aços inoxidáveis superausteniticos é uma solução interessante, para uma maior vida útil dos componentes industriais submetidos a ambientes agressivos, como em meios salinos. Esse trabalho tem como objetivo investigar o aparecimento de pites em um aço comercial superaustenitico de composição química aproximada 25Cr28Ni4Mo em solução salina de cloreto de sódio. O aço foi fundido e tratado termicamente por solubilização a 1050ºC por 1h com o objetivo de eliminar os precipitados. As análises microestruturais antes e após os ensaios de corrosão foram feitas por microscopia óptica e eletrônica de varredura. Observou-se com os ensaios eletroquímicos de Polarização linear e impedância, que o aço inoxidável superaustenítico apresenta excelente resistência à corrosão em meio salino, caracterizado também pelas imagens que não revelaram a formação de pites, mesmo quando submetidos a elevados potenciais.

Sporosarcina ureae was able to grow in the presence of tip to 10-ppm L-asparagine complexed gold. However, 10 ppm Au3+ was found to be highly toxic to Sporosarcina ureae, killing 109 bacteria/mL within a few seconds. To compare the effects of these responses on gold mobility, an in vitro bacterial biofilm model was developed to examine the interaction be¬tween Sporosarcina ureae and ionic gold or L-asparagine gold complexes in gravity fed columns. The immobilization of ionic gold was between 80% and 90% over a period of one week. But, as the available cellular reactive sites became saturated, immobilization decreased to 14% within two weeks. In the L¬asparagine-gold system, gold immobilization in the cytoplasm occurred at a high rate (80% to 90%) throughout the experi¬ment, with limited toxicity towards Sporosarcina ureae. The bacterial immobilization and detoxification of L-asparagine¬complexed ionic gold was associated with a low molecular weight, i.e, <5,000 dalton (atomic mass unit), intracellular protein fraction. This peptide-complexed gold would allow for the continued biogeochemical cycling of gold under ambient (<100°C) surface or near-surface conditions.

THE loading of bituminous coal mechan¬ically was recognized about the year 1900, but during the following 28 years less than 5 per cent of the bituminous pro¬duction in the United States was loaded by mechanical means. During the past i6 years, however, the usage of some form of mechanical loader has had a very rapid and accelerated growth, until at present production of bituminous coal by mechanical means has reached an all¬time high of approximately 46 per cent, and is still increasing. This rapid growth in the use of the mechanical loader has been supplemented by an increase in mechanical cleaning. The importance of mechanical cleaning of coal was recognized many years before the mechanical loader was introduced, because of the impossibility of cleaning manually the sizes below 2 in., and the increasing competition from other fuels. Utilization of mechanical loaders without mechanical cleaning on the surface for at least one or more sizes is the exception, rather than the rule. One exception is a mine that employs caterpillar-mounted mobile loaders exclusively, and mines the entire seam without any selectivity, and yet loads and ships six grades of coal of the very highest quality without mechanical cleaning. Such a fortunate situation can exist only where mining conditions are ideal, where top and bottom are exceptional and there are no impurity partings, and where there is loader height. The conversion from hand loading to mechanical loading has definitely intro¬duced many problems in the preparation plant of yesterday and in the modern streamline plant as well. Many of these problems have been solved by good, sound, conscientious initiative on the part of the plant personnel, with minor expendi¬tures; the solution taking the pattern of rearranging and improving the equipment at hand. Other problems have caused, and are causing, considerable concern and difficulty. LARGE IMPURITIES The removal of large quantities of large impurities from the lump coal, and their handling and disposal, is definitely a troublesome and costly problem. The cost of manually removing the impurities from the picking table alone, based on the actual recovered lump coal, can reach a cost of 42 cents per ton or more. In the design of future plants it would be wise to give this phase of preparation considerably more time and thought, particularly if the seam of coal contains one or more heavy partings and the mining procedure is all seam. This same caution applies to seams that may not contain heavy partings but have poor and heavy draw-slate top, which falls with the coal during the mining cycle. One of the more recent of the modern preparation plants has answered this problem by installing a rock crusher under the picking table in such a manner that the impurities can be diverted by gravity directly to the crusher. This guide considers only nine of the many wire rope terminations used in the mining industry so use of the information presented for terminations not specifically addressed can be done, but with some risk. The nine terminations considered are: Flemish Loop with Steel Sleeve & Thimble, Flemish Loop with Steel Sleeve, Wedge Socket, Swaged Socket, Turn Back Loop with Aluminum Sleeve & Thimble, Thimble Splice with Four Tucks, V-Bolt Clip with Thimble, Zinc Poured Socket, and Epoxy Resin Poured Socket. The guide uses pull test data, axial fatigue test data, and data on sensitivity to poor workmanship, to rank the nine terminations with respect to these performance measures. A selection procedure is suggested and illustrated with an example. Failure data is used to identify the common modes of failure of each termination and so help the inspector direct his attention to the likely location for a failure and describe what he should be looking for. The data on which this guide is based is included so that as new data becomes available, the ranking order can be adjusted accordingly.

RECOVERY METHODS AS RELATED TO PROPERTIES OF SILVER ORES The earliest metallurgical process for treating silver ores was amalgamation with mercury which was in use in the early 1500&apos;s. Closely following was the development of the Patio process for treating ores at Pachuca, Mexico. Silver often occurs as the native metal and in deposits associated with other metals such as gold, copper, lead and zinc. Principal silver minerals include compounds of sulfur, antimony, arsenic, and copper. Silver chloride, and argentiferous galena are also prime sources. Native silver and the chloride characterize the oxide zone of most deposits. Native silver can be concentrated, amalgamated, or cyanided. Silver chloride rapidly dissolves in cyanide without oxygen. Oxidized silver ores containing the higher oxides of manganese are generally refractory to metallurgical treatment. A refractory compound of manganese and silver is formed, probably a manganite , which is insoluble in cyanide solutions. Argentite is the predominant silver mineral. Other important economic minerals are native silver, argentiferous galena, cerargyrite, pyrargyrite and tetrahedrite. Argentite dissolves slowly, the reaction being reversible requires an excess of cyanide. Argentite with disseminated fine grained gold occurring in quartz veins with minor amounts of chalcopyrite and galena may be cyanided directly after grinding, with high silver and gold recoveries. The flowsheet adapted to this type of ore is the Minas de San Luis, Tayoltita cyanide plant, which treats a high grade argentite silver ore containing gold. It is a standard cyanidation circuit but employs long periods of agitation contact for the high silver sulfide content ore. Lead-zinc base metal semi-oxidized- complex ores in pipes and chimneys are replacement deposits in limestone at El Mochito Mine, Honduras. Mineralization comprises galena, cerussite, anglesite, sphalerite, calamine, and smithsonite. The silver content of about 16 ounces occurs as native silver globs, wire and the mineral argentite. After flotation of lead and zinc concentrates, the tailings are cyanided for gold and silver recovery. The great Huelva pyritic copper deposits of Spain carry a little gold and silver. At Cerro Colorado, these metals were concentrated above the chalcocite zone into the so-labeled Mgossanu. This material with a content of 0.08-0.09 oz Au and 1.50 oz Ag per ton is amenable to cyanidation. See Cerro Colorado flowsheet. In southern Hidalgo, about 60 miles north of Mexico City, are the great silver--gold veins of one of the foremost silver mining districts of the world. Real del Monte, Pachuca. Most of the future phosphate resources in Florida, which accounts for 70  percent of production in the United States, are contaminated with too much dolomite that is difficult to remove with existing industrial practices. The low-grade ore quality coupled with increased phosphate demand is of concern to the Florida phosphate industry. In order to resolve the dolomite issue, various beneficiation technologies were designed and evaluated, but none have been sufficiently successful [1].

"The quantitative particle concentration can give important information about the cleanliness of melts for quality control in primary and secondary production of aluminum. Manual quantification of the particle concentration is normally a time consuming process and human control can bias the acquired images and particle count.The present paper explains the automated image-processing steps for the quantification of SiC-particles, with equivalent diameters from 2 to 25 µm, in solidified A356. A total of 700 micrographs, acquired with a standard white light microscope with 10 x magnification, were analyzed. The applied software (Image Pro-Plus 7.0 from MediaCybemetics®) allows for programming of macros which in tum provides the user with a higher degree of control. The automated results are compared with the results obtained by manually counting the particles in the same micrographs. The impact of the automated results on the estimated filtration efficiency was established to be only -3%.IntroductionInclusions are both indigenous and exogenous particulates that are present in commercial metals such as aluminum. If large individual or large numbers of inclusions are present, they can have a significant negative impact on the appearance, mechanical and chemical behavior of products produced from the metal. Aluminum is known to contain large numbers of inclusions: =50 µm in size, e.g. typically <l ppm by volume or <100,000 inclusions of>20 µm per kg of metal as detectable using a Liquid Metal Cleanliness Analyzer, LiMCA [1]. Depending on the final application of the aluminum, inclusions can render the metal 'not fit for purpose', and result in serious economic consequences to metal producers.It is not surprising that the aluminum industry has developed a number of treatment processes to improve metal cleanliness, given the large number of high value products whose quality can be adversely affected by inclusions. CFFs are the most commonly applied filtration process and have been used to filter >50% of the world production of aluminum since the 1990's [2].Inclusions in aluminum may be particles, bifilms [3] or clusters of: oxides (Al2O3 , SiO2), spinels (MgO· Al2O3), carbides (SiC, Al4C3), nitrides (AlN), borides (TiB2), sulfides, phosphides and intermetallics [ 4]."

HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE OF EXPLOSIVES TO MINERAL PRODUCTION The ancient method of breaking rock was to build a wood fire against the face, heat the rock through and then pour water on the heated ore-bearing rock to cause it to break by tension. It was too slow and costly as the forests around the mines were cleared and transport of wood became difficult. Black powder had been used for 300 years as a gun propel- lant. (&apos;Black&apos; after Berthold Schwartz, a German monk, Figure 1, and the inventor of the gun who was given the epitaph `Here lies Berthold the Black, the most abominable of inhumans who by his invention has brought misery to the rest of humanity&apos;). Only at the beginning of the 17th Century, black powder was introduced for loosening rock in European mines. In 1802 Dupont started black powder manufacture on the Brandywine Creek. The ignition train of powder was enclosed in goose quills, straws, rushes, paper or wooden tubes. The time interval between igni- tion and blast was pure speculation.

Longwall mining techniques were introduced into U.S. bituminous coal mining operations in the early 1960s. These techniques were gradually adopted by many mines during the 1970s. By 1983, considered to be the peak of the longwall mine census, there were 118 active longwall faces in 79 coal mines throughout the United States. Beginning in 1984, longwall faces began a decline in numbers that has continued to the present day (Fig. 1). The geographic distribution of longwall faces today is shown in Fig.2 according to region. A breakdown of recent longwall mine production by region is shown in Table 1. An approximate breakdown of present longwall face installations by product (metallurgical and steam) is shown in Table 2.
