Using a modified capillary-reservoir technique, electromigration of dilute solutions of silver in liquid bismuth has been measured with relatively good precision. The effects of experiment duration, temperature. current density, and silver concentration have been investigated. Chemical diffusion coefficients of silver in liquid bismuth were also measured at temperatures ranging from 300°to 600°C. The effective valence of silver in bismuth was calculated as a function of temperature from a comparison of electric mobilities and diffusion coefficients. In an alloy containing 1 wt pct Ag, the electric mobility of silver increased from 1.65 x X sq cm per v-sec at 300°C to 2.38 x 10-4at 600°C; the diffusion coefficient in-creased from 3.0 to 17.5 x 10-5 sq cm per sec over the same temperature range. Calculated values of effective valence decreased from 0.28 at 300°C to 0.10 at 600°c. ALTHOUGH there has been considerable progress in the theoretical treatment of electron-transport properties in liquid metals, the mechanisms of mass-transport phenomena in liquid metals are still not clearly understood. This is especially true for the case of electro migration, alternatively termed elec-trotransport or electrodiffusion, which is mass transport induced by an applied electric field. A thorough knowledge of the mechanisms governing electromigration will considerably aid in understanding the electronic state of an impurity atom in a liquid metal. Electromigration has been long observed and studied in liquid metals and alloys. However, no satisfactory theory to explain the observed effects has been developed. The disparity in the present theoretical treatments, summarized by Verhoeven,1 has been attributed to the difficulty in describing the momentum transfer between electrons and ions and to the lack of precise measurements in liquid metals, especially at elevated temperatures. Prior to the last decade most of the electromigration studies were qualitative, in that only the direction of migration of alloy constituents was determined with any degree of reliability. These results have been summarized by schwarz,2 who was able to measure the electric mobility of several elements in mercury. More recently electromigration in liquid metals has been measured by a variety of techniques, with a varying degree of success. Mangelsdorf3,4 made precise measurements on dilute amalgams at room temperature, using a technique relating changes in composition to changes in alloy resistivity, but was unable to make measurements at elevated temperatures. Using a modification of this technique, Verhoeven and Hucke5 measured electromigration and resistivities in liquid Bi-Sn alloys. However, the resistivity technique is not sensitive to small composition changes and is impractical for very dilute alloys. Verhoeven and Hucke6 also measured electromigration of several solutes in liquid bismuth by adapting the capillary-reservoir method for determining diffusion coefficients in liquids. The reported precision of these measurements was poor, however, primarily due to the large uncertainties in the chemical analyses to determine concentration changes. Belashchenko7 has summarized the recent Russian investigations of electromigration, many of which, however, are of questionable accuracy. The present study was initiated to develop an experimental technique which would be both versatile and sufficiently sensitive to yield precise measurements of electromigration of solutes in dilute metal alloys at elevated temperatures. Using this technique, a comprehensive study of silver in liquid bismuth was made to determine the effects of experimental variables on the apparent electric mobilities. Chemical diffusion coefficients of silver in liquid bismuth were also measured over the same temperature range for comparison with the electromigration data. Preliminary safe distances for blasting wiring from typical electromagnetic sources are presented. The distances are for underground coal mines and electromagnetic sources in the frequency range below 10 MHz. The distances are based on measurements performed at 3 locations in each of 3 coal mines. The measurement apparatus, measurement procedure, measurement results and the rationale used in the calculation of the safe distances are all described. The safe distances presented are dependent on the measurement results and their interpretation. More measurements are clearly necessary to establish the validity of the suggested distances.

The objective of this paper is to describe a study sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy during which a model was developed to optimize haulback mining procedures in single and multiple seam contour mines, The study objective was to achieve financial- based productivity increases approaching twenty percent. This paper reviews the results of the first year's Phase I activities, which include four main tasks: formulate a methodology that can be used to select equipment and mining procedures that result in optimal performance in a particular haulback mining situation; conduct field studies of representative single and multiple seam mines to obtain quantitative background information for development of the formulated methodology: develop the methodology into a useful design tool for mine operators; and prepare plans for field tests to evaluate the effectiveness of the developed tool.

Introduction Pebble mill grinding can be defined as wet or dry grinding in a tumbling mill with pebbles used as grinding media instead of metal balls. To clarify the terminology, which may differ in the various mineral industries, it is essential to point out the differences between grinding with partially sized and carefully sized grinding media. When grinding with partially sized media (limited top size only), sizing is usually the setting of the primary crusher and there is no bottom sizing-all fines, chips, sand, and small sizes are included. This is often called run-of-mine or primary autogenous grinding. In this case the entire crusher discharge is fed into the mill and part of it becomes "charge" and the rest is "sand feed." When grinding with carefully sized media (i.e., media that is sized both at the top and bottom of the size range), no fines or chips should be present in the charge to the mill. This is pebble milling and the grinding media consists of ore, rock, Danish pebbles, gravel pebbles, or ceramic pebbles-media that is appreciably lighter than steel balls. The grind¬ing charge is fed to the mill to maintain a load and it does the grinding usually on a classified sand product of suitable size. If the grinding media is the same as the raw material being ground, this type of grinding is also called secondary autogenous grinding. Pebble milling was in common use in the gold mines of South Africa in the early 1900s. It is by far the oldest form of autogenous grinding. It may be used to grind crushed ores from a maximum size of about -% in. to all -10 µm. Pebble milling differs from "run of mine" grinding in many ways, but two big differences are: I) The ore itself is crushed to approximately t/4 in., or it may be further reduced to 8 or 10 mesh in a rod mill or fine crusher. 2) Then carefully screened ore of the correct size is placed in one or more stages of pebble mills to grind the ore to its desired final size. The media size is carefully selected to be the most efficient for the particular size reduction required in each stage. This is a precise practice, and pebble mills can be designed as easily and accu¬rately as can rod mills or ball mills by those skilled in the art. A pebble mill is a rotating cylinder in which the grinding media has been carefully sized for the job in hand. If the mill is doing coarse grinding, the media will be correspondingly large and the mill might be called a primary (or intermediate) pebble mill or a lump mill. If it is to do fine grinding, the media selected is proportionately smaller and the mill would be called a secondary or tertiary pebble mill. The media itself is normally rounded pebbles made from screened ore from the primary-crusher discharge. The charge could be rounded pebbles of the correct size removed from a primary autogenous mill, or the pebbles could be carefully sized gravel, sized beach pebbles, or sized flint pebbles. Usually the specific gravity of a pebble is from 35 to 55% of that of steel balls. It commonly varies from 2.66 to 4.2, depending on the specific gravity of the ore. Primary pebble mills, or lump mills, would be charged with pieces of rock up to 10 in. maximum and 5 in. minimum and would grind crusher discharge with a maximum size of 1/4 in. on hard ores and 3/8 in. on softer ores. Secondary pebble mills could be charged with pieces of rock screened on 4 x 4-in. square mesh and retained on 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 in. These mills would grind material with a top size of 8 to 10 mesh. Tertiary pebble mills could be charged with screened rock that would pass 3 x 3 in. and be retained on 1 x 1 in. and grind 35 to 48 mesh sands. Principles of Operation Media Size To operate a pebble mill efficiently it is imperative that great care be taken in screening the rock feed that is fed into the mill to round up into a range of pebble sizes that are suitable for grinding of the sands that are also being fed into the mill, having regard to the top size and the average size of such sands. Since most mill operators know from experience the correct size of steel balls to be used in a mill to handle different sizes of sand feed, it is convenient to relate the pebble size to a ball size. If the correct ball size is not known, it is relatively simple to conduct batch laboratory tests in 12- to 18-in. laboratory mills to determine the optimum size of steel ball. Also, Bond and others have published formulas for calculating the optimum ball size. When the correct size of the individual steel ball is known, then a pebble of the same weight will perform the same grinding if used in the proper size of mill and under the proper conditions, which will be defined later. This media size, as defined by the average weight of the individual pieces, is most important. The following tests will serve to clarify this point. Laboratory Tests Using Steel Balls or Pebbles. Several labora¬tory grinds were made to compare a given size and weight of steel ball with a pebble of the same weight but larger size, and of the same size but lighter weight. The following loads were used in the 12-in. laboratory mill: All 1 1/4-in. steel balls weighing 122 ± 10 g. All 1 3/4-in. pebbles weighing 123 ± 5 g. All 1 1/4-in. pebbles weighing 45 ± 3 g. To equalize capacity, the test with the steel balls was run only 34% as long as the tests with pebbles. In each case, 2,500 g of primary sands were ground at the optimum gravity for the media being tested at a speed 78 1/2 % of critical speed, and for 170, 340, and 680 revolu¬tions for the steel balls, and 500, 1,000, and 2,000 revolutions for the pebbles. The first test is summarized in Table 74 by showing the 80% passing size in microns for the feed and for each of the grinds. Two other tests are summarized in Table 75 showing the screen analyses

Currently there is a constant and essential concern of preserving nature. Over the years the concern with the environment is increasing, new environmental laws are emerging and being applied more rigorously and consequently emerge economic needs and mineral processing practices and other materials. In this sense briquetting becomes an alternative to fine particles agglomeration by means of pressure and or temperature, with the aid or not of a binder, which allows to get a product not only compressed, which presents shape, size, and adequate mechanical properties. The reduction in volume of the material in some cases (beyond the technological benefits) also allows fine materials can be transported and stored more economically, safely and effectively. The production of coke is greater as the content of better coking coal is, thus he low capacity coking coal is not much used in coke ovens. This research aims to demonstrate that briquetting of mineral coals with low coking coal capacity is possible, additionally allows increased coke production, obtaining then a better yield of coke. Basically they take advantage of low price of no coking coals without changing the quality of the coke produced. Anyway, briquetting became a smart alternative to aggregate values, economy and care for the environment.

Goldcorp Inc. has mining operations and exploration projects throughout Canada, the United States, Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras; as well as partnerships in Argentina and the Dominican Republic. In rural areas of developing countries it is very common to have mining operations surrounded by diverse communities consisting of people with limited, or no formal education. This is fertile ground for anti-mining NGOs to cultivate. The limited educational backgrounds of the people, coupled with a company desire to maintain a low profile can lead to a problematic lack of trust between the local communities and the mining company. As part of its commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development, Goldcorp has implemented various programs to build trust at these operations, as well as incorporating this policy into any new projects prior to commencement of operations. This paper is intended to describe two initiatives that have shown positive results for both the communities and the Marlin Mine.

For the three full-scale pile installations, two different high-energy hydraulic hammers were selected for the installation. However, these hammers may not have sufficient energy to drive these large diameter piles at their ultimate capacity following long-term set-up. Nevertheless, these hammers were selected because, soil plug behavior, the generation of excess pore pressures and remolding of soil during driving were expected to reduce the shaft and end bearing resistance, and therefore reduce the energy required to drive these piles to design penetration. Data collected during continuous installation driving and after a series of re-strikes at different set-up times ranging from 1 to 33 days were used as input data for CAPWAP analyses. These results were used to estimate the soil resistance along the pile length and at the toe of the pile, and the soil pile set-up behavior. Validity of the procedures used to predict the soil resistance to driving and predicted blow counts were verified with the field observed blow counts and the energy that was delivered to the pile. Based on combined CAPWAP analyses, the soil pile set-up with time was predicted.

Calcium metal was found to deoxidize thorizcm at 1000° to 1200° C. The reaction kinetics were determilled and related to the diffusion coefficients of oxygen in thorium. The solubility of oxygen in thorium, the minimum oxygen concentration, and the diffusion coefficient were determined from 1000° to 1200°C. This firocess results in the lowest oxygen concentrations zohich have been reported for thorium metal. FOR many years it has been known that calcium metal will reduce thorium oxide to thorium metal. This reaction has been the basis for several methods of preparing thorium metal. From the equations giv-by Kubaschewski and vans, ' AF" for the reaction Cao, + Tho,(,) - CaO(,, + Th(,) was calculated and found to be -3.4 kcal at 1000°C, -2.5 kcal at llOO°C, and -2.0 kcal at 1200°c. Thorium is very slightly soluble in liquid calcium, and the solubility of calcium in solid thorium is very low. Consequently these metals would be in essentially their reference states. If thorium containing oxygen were equilibrated with liquid calcium between 1000° and 1200°C, the oxygen content of the thorium would have to be below the solubility limit in thorium. Oxygen is one of the impurities most difficult to remove from thorium and is the most abundant impurity in metal prepared by almost all known methods. Fortunately, oxygen does not have a large influence on the properties of thorium because the solubility in solid thorium is very low. EvenT in thorium containing 100 ppm of 0, particles of thorium oxide can be observed in the microstructure. In view of the incompatibility of thorium oxide and liquid calcium and the low solubility of thorium oxide in thorium, the deoxidation of thorium by this method was investigated. For thorium containing an amount of oxygen well in excess of the solubility limit, the reaction should proceed in the following sequence. The oxygen content of the thorium matrix near the surface would be depleted by the diffusion of oxygen to the surface. At the surface, the oxygen would react with calcium to form calcium oxide. To maintain equilibrium within the thorium, thorium oxide would dissolve to keep the matrix saturated. Consequently, the thorium-oxide particles would disappear first at the surface and then the particle-free rim would grow in thickness. If the rate-controlling step were the diffusion of oxygen through this layer of thorium which was growing in thickness in direct proportion to the amount of oxygen removed, the well known parabolic time law should be observed. If the oxygen concentration at the surface of the thorium and at the inner surface of the deoxidized rim were known, the diffusion coefficient of oxygen in thorium could be calculated from the parabolic rate constant. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The thorium metal used in this study was prepared by calcium reduction of ThF, by the method described by Wilhelm.' The analysis of this metal is given in Table I. The carbon was determined by combustion, the oxygen by the HC1-insoluble residue method, nitrogen by the Kjeldahl method, and the other elements by emission spectroscopy. A section of this ingot was hot rolled at 600°C to 1/4 and 1/8-in. thick plates. Specimens approximately 7/8 in. square were cut from these plates, and all surfaces of the specimens were cleaned and smoothed by filing with a clean file. Individual specimens were placed in 1-in. diam by 2-in.-long tantalum capsules. Approximately 1 g of clean, high-purity calcium was placed in the capsules and an end closure arc-welded in place. The tantalum capsules were sealed in Inconel crucibles to protect the reactive metals from oxidation. The entire loading procedure was done in a glove box filled with pure argon. The loaded crucibles were placed in a muffle furnace, controlled within 2OC of the desired temperature, for a measured length of time. After the specimen had cooled to room temperature, it was sectioned perpendicular to the large faces and through the mid-point of two of the sides. The sectioned specimen was mounted and polished through Linde A abrasive. The rim which was free of thorium-oxide particles could be clearly observed microscopically as mechanically polished. INTRODUCTION The enquiry of the Royal Commission on Health and Safety of Workers in Mines of 1976, known as the Ham Commission after its chairman, Dr. J. Ham , now president of the University of Toronto, was one of the activities surrounding the upturn in the fortunes of the Canadian uranium industry and its markets in the mid-seventies. Although the regulation and licensing of Canada's ten major mine/mill facilities employing six thousand or more uranium mines is a federal concern under the Atomic Energy Control Act, this Commission, which paid particular attention to health and safety in uranium mines, was appointed by the Province of Ontario. Further provincial enquiries in British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland have been aimed at quantifying, reducing or eliminating the environmental and health impact of uranium production. This work has created a mosaic of provincial regulation in what is essentially a field of federal jurisdiction. Various organizations of the federal government related to its regulatory function in the uranium industry are outlined in Figure 1 showing the matrices of regulatory, advisory and research activities associated with the exploitation of Canadian uranium resources. A more detailed examination [ ] of the governmental (federal and provincial) activities, commissions, etc., in the Canadian uranium industry indicates a definite parallelism of effort, if not of scale between the two levels of government in the execution of their roles in occupational and environmental health and safety and is presented here to explain the complex stage onto which the Canadian Institute for Radiation Safety has just entered. The development of the Institute and its precursors together with current and planned research activities are described. BACKGROUND Traditionally and constitutionally, natural resource exploitation and its regulation is under provincial jurisdiction; however, the uranium industry has been under federal control since the Second World War when security measures necessitated the creation of the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB). Health and safety aspects, in terms of inspection, compliance and environmental monitoring are performed on behalf of the AECB by provincial labour inspectors (Saskatchewan and Ontario) and Ministries of Environment. Non-radiation health and safety matters are also enforced under the federal Canada Labour Code by provincial inspectors. In support of licensing and standard-setting functions, major research programs have been initiated and expanded at both the AECB and the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET), formerly the Mines Branch of the Federal Department of Energy, Mines and Resources). CANMET established a Mining Research Laboratory at Elliot Lake, Ontario in 1965 to conduct research and development aimed at improving production capability, providing information on the security of uranium supply and investigating the hazards of mining and their implications for the health and safety of the miners. The provincial route in assessing the costs and benefits of uranium production has attempted to be far more conclusive in nature. While some on-going studies are funded, periodic inquiries by Royal Commission have become the accepted practice. Six such inquiries have been conducted in four provinces and widely differing policies have resulted from their findings and recommendations. For example, while the government of British Columbia in the Fall of 1980 declared a seven-year moratorium on(2) uranium mining and exploration in the province, the province of Ontario's crown utility "Ontario Hydro" financed the rehabilitation of a mine/mill complex at Elliot Lake. The latter instance is not surprising considering that the final report of Ontario's "Royal Commission on Electric Power Planning",(3) concluded that nuclear energy has a continuing role to play in the expansion of Ontario Hydro.

"Abstract - In many mining areas, potentially profitable mineral projects can be at risk because local people do not trust their governments and mining companies on many issues, including human rights. Projects will continue to be vulnerable to potential failure, delays, and higher costs. This paper suggests that geoscientists need to be aware of the global challenges they face from issues of corporate social responsibility, sustainable development, and human rights. These are not areas in which geoscience education has traditionally focused.This paper examines the types of conflict concerning human rights that are encountered by geoscientists involved in mineral exploration and development. It provides a background to human rights issues and presents a classification of the types of issue encountered. It reports on a survey of case studies that provide examples of the breadth, complexities, and consequences of such issues. The paper then concludes by outlining the development of codes and standards to improve performance, and suggests approaches for positive, practical engagement."

At Brunswick Mine, an increase in the number of seismically-related falls of ground and in particular rockbursts occurred during 1999. This was due to the ever-increasing stress levels in the remaining ore reserves, mining in difficult highly stressed areas and in particular troublesome geological features. In conjunction with the Noranda Technology Centre, development of rockburst support systems started at the Brunswick Mine in 1996 and efforts were accelerated in 1999. A support package consisting of #6 gauge chain link mesh, #0 gauge heavy mesh straps, and a 1 m by 1 m pattern of modified conebolts was developed. The conebolts were modified to enable mixing of the resin anchoring. Two major rockbursts occurred during an intense seismic episode at the Brunswick Mine from October 13th to 17th , 2000.The area was evacuated approximately four hours before the first burst hit, and remained closed during the seismic ?flurry??. The first damaging activity occurred around midnight on Friday the 13th, and a second damaging episode occurred on the 17th that included a local Richter Magnitude 2.7 event. The second rockburst had dimensions of approximately 5 m by 5 m by 20 m or 2150 tonnes of massive sulphide material (density 4300 kg/m3). The first failure area was more extensive, caving approximately six metres of an intersection back with the lateral extent not safely measurable. This paper briefly describes the mining conditions that led to the bursting, the seismic response of the region, the mechanisms thought to have caused the bursts, and a yielding support system which had been partially installed before the burst.

"A review of historic operating practices of the heap leach pads at the Los Filos Mine, Mexico, revealed periods of restricted cyanide addition, reduced leach time, and insufficient irrigation flow. These issues all led to the buildup of partially leached recoverable gold inventory within the leach pads. Drawing down this inventory represented an opportunity to bring value forward. This paper outlines the strategic initiatives which were implemented as efforts to accelerate the inventory drawdown, including geophysical mapping and pressure injection.INTRODUCTION Los Filos is a heap-leach operation located in the Guerrero gold belt in southern Mexico. Operational and hydraulic challenges at the Los Filos Mine have led to a buildup of gold in inventory within the leach pads. Operationally, periods of restricted reagent addition, reduced leach time, and insufficient irrigation flow have compounded over the last eight years, and resulted in significant inventory growth. Hydraulically, the leach pad has issues with low permeability and solution channeling due to the fines and clay content of the ore. The leach pad is storing high-grade pregnant leach solution (PLS) as perched aquifers above areas that are compacted and difficult to drain. These operational and hydraulic challenges made it particularly difficult to spatially predict the precise locations of the inventory build-up. Fortunately, the challenges at Los Filos are not unique to the mine, and others have taken steps elsewhere to reduce metal inventory through a program that targets areas for inventory drawdown. For example, Ghorbani et al. (2016) noted that a method of injecting barren reagent solutions, applied directly to specific areas of a leach pad to reduce inventory, was presented by Wan and Brierley (1997) and Wan (1997). Seal (2004; 2007), Seal and Jung (2005), and Seal et al. (2012) have put the injection methodology into practice in Nevada and Colorado gold mines with a technology called Hydro-Jex®. The goal of Hydro-Jex has been to supply reagents at a high pressure over a short duration, followed by periodical low pressure rinse periods to remove leached metal and resupply fresh reagent to the ore."

In planning an underground room and pillar mine, the selection of the shaft or portal location and the orientation of the main haulage arteries is of paramount importance, particularly in view of the high dependence of the cost of truck haulage on the proper definition of these parameters. In an effort to facilitate this selection a computer program was written which, by relating the truck characteristics to the areal configuration of the property or ore-body, derives the volume-weighted total fuel and time requirements for hauling ore from every panel within the property to a specified portal or shaft location through a predetermined gridwork of haulage drifts. By varying the size and orientation of the gridwork and the location of the portal or shaft access, an infinite number of configurations can be investigated. The results of this analysis can be plotted to indicate the optimum conditions.

It is calculated that since the beginning of last century, which practically coincides with the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, our civilization has consumed around 239.5 million tons of copper (see: Table 1). According to the most pessimistic projections of today, with only a 2.5% annual growth rate in demand, we are bound until the end of this century to consume another 200 million tons of copper in remaining 17 years. A recent study made by US Bureau of Mines (1) indicates that the proven ore reserves of 150 major operating mines and about 120 deposits sufficiently explored for development and feasibility studies accumulate a total mass of 49.3 billion tons of ore, assaying an average of 0.82% Cu and containing around 324 million tons of recoverable copper. Consequently, there is a high grade of probability that the bulk of our future ore supplies, for our demand of, say, next 25 years will cane precisely from these mines. The interesting point in USBM study is that it indicates the recoverable byproduct content of these ores and which is: 118.2 million troy ounces of gold 2277.4 million troy ounces of silver 7.1 million tons of lead 24.7 million tons of zinc 1.3 million tons of nickel 3.1 million tons of molybdenum 765 thousand tons of cobalt, and 720 thousand troy ounces of platinum. This information gives us a relatively reliable profile of our future ores for next 25 years, and thus makes possible evaluation of byproduct credits in our future copper mining and producing activities.

The Don River & Central Waterfront Coxwell Sanitary Bypass Tunnel (CBT) Project in Toronto will extend approximately 10.5 km and be lined using a precast concrete segmental tunnel liner with an internal diameter of 6,300 mm and external diameter of 6,900 mm. The CBT liner was grouted through ports drilled in the segments. The Westerly Storage Tunnel (WST) in Cleveland will extend approximately 2.93 km long and will be lined by using a similar precast concrete segmental tunnel liner with an internal diameter of 7,620 mm and external diameter of 8,230 mm. The WST liner was grouted using both grout ports built into the tail can of the TBM and through segments. Each tunnel was mined primarily in shale with varying levels of weathering and both tunnels had dry and wet sections. This paper will document the means and methods for grouting in each tunnel as well as the methods utilized to proof grout and the results found.

A metallographic study was made of deformation twinning (Neumann lamellae) in ingot iron slowly deformed in tension at —196O and —150°C. The results showed that twinning is initiated mainly during the initial stages of plastic deformation. However, the breadth of the twins generally increases with increase in strain up to fracture of the specimen. HE results of an investigation of the effect of low I temperatures on the flow, fracture, strain hardening, and strain aging characteristics, and the true stress-strain relationship for specimens of ingot iron deformed in tension were reported recently.1,2 In that study specimens of ingot iron, in different initial conditions, were slowly deformed in tension at various temperatures between —196" and +100°C. A phenomenon observed, but only briefly reported, was the formation of deformation twins (Neumann lamellae) in the specimens deformed at the lower temperatures. Preliminary metallographic examination of these specimens indicated that there was apparently some correlation between the deformation twinning and the strain of the specimen and that this factor merited further investigation. Some recent investigations have indicated a direct association of Neumann lamellae and the fracture of the metal. Bruckner".' * postulated that the twinning immediately precedes the fracture and the latter is initiated by the stopping of the propagation of twins, either at subgrain boundaries or at other structural features. Tipper and Sullivan5 postulated that Neumann lamellae are initiated by the shock or a shock wave set up at fracture in the still highly stressed unbroken metal, and that a high rate of deformation is a necessary condition for their formation. An extensive metallographic examination, therefore, was made of many of the specimens used in the study of ingot iron at this Bureau and of additional specimens deformed to selected strains under various conditions. The present paper summarizes the effects of deformation under these conditions upon the breadth and scope of the deformation twins. Other features of twinning will be discussed in another paper. Material and Testing Procedure All of the specimens were prepared from one lot of ingot iron, as hot-rolled, of chemical composition other than iron as follows: C, 0.02 pct; Mn, 0.02; P, 0.005; S, 0.018; Si, 0.002; Cu, 0.10; 0, 0.058; and N, 0.002. Cylindrical tensile specimens with a 2 in. gage length were used. The reduced section was slightly tapered from each end; the diameter (0.438 in.) at the midsection of the gage length was about 0.003 in. less than at the ends. The specimens were finished to the final dimensions by grinding and polishing in the axial direction. The ends of the specimens were machined with 3/4 in. x 10 threads and the shoulder fillets were machined to a radius of 0.75 in. The specimens were extended slowly in tension (deformation rate less than 0.5 pct reduction in area per minute) while immersed in an appropriate cryogenic liquid maintained at the desired temperature. The minimum diameter of the specimen was measured during the test by means of a specially designed reduction of area gage accurate to 0.0001 in." A detailed description of the testing equipment and the method of maintaining the desired temperature is given in a previous paper.' Each specimen, after deformation to a specified strain at a selected temperature, was sectioned longitudinally and examined metallographically. The preparation of specimens for metallographic examination was carried out in the usual manner by mechanical polishing and etching. Results and Discussion Deformation twins in specimens of ingot iron extended slowly in tension at —196" and —150°C are shown by the representative micrographs of Figs. 1

Aluminum alloys, in common with most other metallic alloys exhibit slight density changes with variations in temper achieved by heat-treatment, which usually are the result of the variation with temperature of the solid solubility of the various alloy constituents in the solvent metal. Changes in density are, of course, most marked in conditions that exhibit the maximum variation in solid solubility of the constituents. In aluminum alloys these conditions usually prevail when alloys are quenched from just below the melting point and are subsequently reheated to some lower temperature. Since commercial heat-treatments may be of this type, the density changes, although small (of the order of 0.3 per cent which may be compared with the density change of about 1.5 per cent involved in the transformation, at ordinary temperatures, of gamma to alpha iron during the hardening of steel), may in some specific applications necessitate quantitative consideration. This phenomenon has been investigated extensively in the laboratories of the Aluminum Company of America over a period of years. A number of investigators '-5t have observed and measured the density changes accompanying the heat-treatment of aluminum alloys. In general, these changes have not been directly translated to dimensional changes and their significance has been overlooked to some extent by the practical user of aluminum alloys. It is the purpose of this paper to consider some practical aspects of these density and dimensional changes. These density changes were given some consideration in 1917 in connection with the use of aluminum-alloy pistons for aircraft engines. Investigations by Lea and Shakespear were reported in some confidential reports of the British Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, Light Alloys Subcommittee, during 1917 and 1918, which are not generally available in published form. (written discussion*)..-The mode of intercrystalline oxidation which the authors" have so well observed and described is characteristic of nickel that has been exposed' to: the action of an oxidizing atmosphere at higher temperatures, such as, those at which; it is annealed or heated for rolling or forging. Oxidation under such conditions proceeds inward from the surface along the, crystal boundaries' producing a net-work, probably of oxide; which causes a very brittle condition of this surface material. This, in turn, generally results in surface cracking and checking during further, rolling and a defective sheet or other product is produced. An example of this is shown in Fig. 2, which shows the surface, of a badly surface-cracked sheet of nickel produced by incorrect heating con-ditions. A cross-section of this sheet etched with nitric acid is shown in Fig. 1, which reveals the intercrystalline oxidation network adjacent to both surfaces.These layers are so brittle that it is not possible to deform them by rolling without severe cracking along these lines or, planes of weakness. The best, and possibly only, remedy for this condition lies in its prevention by the maintenance of a neutral soft flame for heating and annealing nickel during the entire course of its manufacture. I should like to suggest that, those making microscopic investigations of nickel and nickel-rich alloys try the use of acetic-acid .solutions of nitric acid for etching these metals rather than aqueous solutions, of nitric acid. I have found that a solution containing 50 per cent. nitric acid, from 25-45 -per. cent. acetic acid, and from 25-5 per cent. water gives excellent results with. Wrought and cast nickel and Morsel metal and superior results to those obtained with nitric acid, alone. The acetic. acid seems to inhibit the passivity that nickel often assumes toward nitric acid and much more uniform etching may, be obtained. The proportions of nitric and acetic, acid may be varied somewhat from those given without mate-rially altering the quality of the etching, although without any distinct improvement in it.
