THE production of titanium in 15-1b. lots and with a purity sufficient to be consolidated into ductile metal, as described in a previous paper,1 has provided adequate material for a study of the : physical properties of titanium and a more thorough examination of its working qualities. Data on the physical properties reported in that paper were obtained on metal fabricated by a fixed procedure, standardized for the purpose of control of the reduction, and are representative only of material fabricated under those conditions. There are many possible variables in the working schedule, which will have significant effects on the properties of the finished material; and since the previous working methods were not necessarily the best, an investigation of the fabrication of titanium by other methods was undertaken. In this work the consolidation of the powder by pressing and sintering was conducted essentially as outlined in the report cited' and all efforts were centered on fabrication methods for those powders and the properties produced by them. Hardness, density, microstructure, and tensile properties were determined at various stages in the working and annealing; and resistivity measurements were made on a few bars and drawn wire. [ ] CONSOLIDATION OF THE POWDER The screen analysis of the available titanium powder is given in Table I. No attempt was made to alter the size distribution from that noted because this powder, although coarse by normal powder-metallurgy standards, produced acceptable compacts suitable for the present work. Because of their large specific surface, finer powders are more contaminated by oxygen and produce harder compacts, which are difficult to work. The powder as produced is soft, compresses in a normal fashion, and exhibits very little tendency to adhere to the die surfaces. Avmin have developed a flowsheet for the refining of copper, nickel and cobalt from Nkomati concentrates. Cobalt is recovered from calcium-saturated solution using Cyanex® 272. Nickel is subsequently extracted using versatic acid. The loaded organic is stripped using spent electrolyte, producing advance electrolyte for recovery of nickel by electrowinning. Cobalt was recovered with >99.5% extraction efficiency, reducing cobalt from 1.8 g/l to <10 mg/l. The cobalt/nickel ratio in the cobalt product solution was >1500. Nickel solvent extraction was optimized to recover 99%, reducing the nickel concentration from 32 g/l to <0.3 g/l, while minimizing calcium deportment to the nickel electrowinning circuit.

The Meikle Mine is a high-grade, underground gold mine that utilizes a primary and secondary stoping method with delayed backfill. The newly developed Rodeo Mine will start production using similar mining methods in late 2001. The combined production for the mines will be 4100 stpd of ore in 2002. Dilution of the secondary stopes resulting from blast induced overbreak of the backfill placed in the primary stopes was an issue identified as being a major contributor to the total mining cost at the Meikle Mine. To address the overbreak issue, a low-density, polystyrene enhanced bulk emulsion was developed and introduced to the mine. The density and energy of the emulsion was varied until an optimal level was reached. The use of a low-density bulk emulsion has greatly reduced the overbreak of the primary stope backfill when blasting the secondary stopes. Benefits to the mines include reduced secondary stope dilution, lowered total mining cost, and increased revenues.1

For more than a century, the AAC (ammonia I ammonium carbonate) process has been applied to the recovery of various metals. A variation of it, the Caron Process was first used in the early 1940&apos;s in Cuba for the extraction and recovery of nickel from laterites. The original Nicaro plant has been in continuous operation since then. Years later the Caron process was used again in Australia at the Greenvale (Yabulu) NickelICobalt plant, commissioned in 1974. Other projects (Sered, Niquelandia, Nonoc, Punta Gorda, Albania) as well as several studies have been carried out. The Caron Process is alive and still promising. Members of our organization have been working with AAC and the Caron Process since 1952. This paper will review current approaches and potential improvements (enhancement of recoveries of Ni and Co, reduced energy consumption and maintenance simplification). The extension of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge north of Iceland has collectively been referred to as the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridges (AMOR). The AMOR extends from the northern shelf of Iceland, to the Siberian shelf in the Laptev Sea, passing en route through the Norwegian- Greenland Sea, the narrow gateway of the Fram Strait, and across the Eurasia Basin. The AMOR is 4000 km long and is divided into six super segments: 1) the Kolbeinsey Ridge, 2) the Mohns Ridge, 3) the Knipovich Ridge, 4) the Molloy Ridge, 5) the Lena Trough, and 6) the Gakkel Ridge. After continental rifting at 60-50 million years ago, around 2.5 million km2 of oceanic seafloor has formed by seafloor spreading - resulting in the formation of the Norwegian- Greenland Sea and the Eurasian Basin. This northernmost part of the global ridge system is anomalous in several ways: The seafloor spreading takes place at an ultraslow rate (less than 2 cm/y) with spreading rates decreasing northward to around 1 cm/y at the Gakkel Ridge - which is the most slow-spreading ridge on Earth. As a result, the volcanic activity along the northern part of the AMOR is low, the oceanic crust is unusually thin (around 3,5 km at the Knipovich Ridge, Kandilarov et al.2010), and the rift valley is deep (average water depth > 3 km). In the southern part of the AMOR, the ridge system is affected by the Icelandic plume and a hot spot below Jan Mayen. The ridge-plume interaction results in higher volcanic productivity, unusually thick oceanic crust (9-11 km, Kandilarov et al. 2012) and shallow ridge segments (1500-100 m). The AMOR also display contrasting spreading regimes, whereas some super segments are dominated by orthogonal spreading (Kolbeinsey and Gakkel Ridge) others are characterized by highly oblique spreading (Mohns and Knipovich ridges). Some ridge segment displays asymmetric spreading, like the Mohns Ridge where core complexes preferentially form along the northwestern flank. Together these variations in ridge characteristics results in large diversity of hydrothermal systems and associated mineral deposits.

The Government of Canada recently passed a new regulation to control the liquid discharges from metal mines in Canada. The Metal Mining Effluent Regulation of the Federal Fisheries Act will come into force within the next six months. As a result the Ontario Regional Office of Environment Canada has developed a compliance promotion program to accompany the new regulation. How the mines implement the regulation will be key to its success. This paper will briefly outline the components of this regulation, including the reporting structure, the discharge parameters and limits, as well as the requirement for the mines to conduct long-term environmental effects monitoring on their effluent discharge. The presentation will give a brief account of the compliance promotion program, and then focus on the spill trends from Ontario mining operations. The province of Ontario has the largest concentration of metal mining operations in the country with approximately 40 active mines.

Concrete-infused cloth is used in several civil and mining surface applications whose circumstances are similar to some of those in underground mining. A feature of this material is that it cannot be overhydrated. In underground conditions, however, the excess supply of water to the cloth for hydration could lead to muddy and potentially unsafe working conditions, as well as resource wastage by supplying more water to the construction site than is needed. The objective of this study is to verify the water-to-cloth ratio and study the effect of hydration level on the strength of the Concrete Cloth product. We found that the strength increases with increased hydration up to a 1:2 water-to-cloth ratio by weight, after which the strength holds steady regardless of additional hydration. This confirms the 1:2 water-tocloth ratio by weight for hydration and confirms that strength is retained even if the cloth is excessively hydrated.

This chapter presents proportionate mortality ratios (PMRs) derived from death certificate data in the National Occupational Mortality Surveillance (NOMS) database for the years 1986 through 1993. At the time this report was prepared, 1993 was the latest year for which data were available. Industry is classified under the 1980 U.S. Bureau of the Census classification system [Bureau of the Census 1982]; cause of death, under the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) [World Health Organization 1977]. A PMR of 100 indicates a mortality risk for a particular industry group that is similar to that for all industry groups combined. A PMR over 100 suggests a higher risk; a PMR under 100 suggests a lower risk. PMRs are subject to many factors that affect their reliability and validity and may not be comparable across populations with very different causes of death. An elevated PMR for a specified cause of death among an occupational or industry group may indicate a relationship between a work exposure and the cause of death specified. However, there are many limitations of PMRs as a measure of risk; they are most useful for generating hypotheses about exposure-disease relationships, which can then be tested in other studies. Selected PMRs are presented separately for males and females for coal mining, metal mining, nonmetallic mineral mining and quarrying (which includes nonmetal, stone, and sand and gravel), and for oil and gas extraction. All PMRs have been adjusted for age and race. In general, PMRs are presented only if the lower 95% confidence limit exceeded 100. If a PMR in an ICD-9 subcategory was above 100, however, the PMR for the larger category into which the subcategory falls is always presented and may be less than 100. PMRs can be expected to be elevated for conditions that have a high prevalence in particular occupational groups. PMRs showed elevated values for conditions known to affect miners, such as coal workers&apos; pneumoconiosis, pneumoconiosis due to silica, tuberculosis, chronic pulmonary heart disease, and injuries. Additional findings of interest were- • An elevated PMR for myocardial infarction among male coal miners (table 2-1); • Elevated PMRs for neurologic disease in general and anterior horn cell disease, in particular among male metal miners (table 2-3); • An elevated PMR for rheumatic heart disease in male metal miners (table 2-3); • Elevated PMRs for malignant neoplasms of the digestive organs and peritoneum and for malignant neoplasms of the colon and rectum in female nonmetal miners (table 2-6); and • Elevated PMRs for non-A, non-B hepatitis and arteriosclerotic heart disease among male oil and gas workers (table 2-7).

The mineral industry of Benin contributed less than 1% of the 1977 gross domestic product (GDP), which was estimated at $500 million.&apos; Other than limestone and salt, no exploitable mineral deposits have yet been discovered in Benin, which has been rated by the United Nations as one of the world&apos;s least developed nations. In 1977, the economy was further weakened by petroleum price increases and severe drought. The country continued to depend on foreign assistance, which averaged $20 million per year, to finance development projects. The country&apos;s first 3-year plan, which was put into operation in October 1977 after many delays, allocated more than $1 billion to projects in infrastructure, agriculture, and light industry. The most important infrastructure project was the expansion and modernization of the port of Cotonou, valued as an entrepôt port for the transit of goods to the neighboring countries of Niger and Nigeria. Plans called for an increase in handling capacity to 1 million tons of cargo annually, the improvement of port and cargo handling operations, and the upgrading of the efficiency of the Port Autonome de Cotonou (PAC) management system. The $46 million project was to be financed by a consortium led by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and including Canada, France, Nigeria, and Abu Dhabi. Construction was scheduled to begin in 1978 and be completed in 1980.

O processo usual para elaboração de aços utilizados na indústria de petróleo e gás é a laminação controlada, porém, não é adequado para fabricação de peças de geometria complexa, como juntas e conexões. Nestes casos, o forjamento é a melhor opção, pois permite maior diversidade de conformação. A produção de componentes por esta técnica exige tratamentos de têmpera e revenimento para obtenção das propriedades exigidas em trabalho. O objetivo deste projeto é avaliar o comportamento em tração e a microestrutura de um aço microligado submetido ao aquecimento a 855, 900 e 1000°C. Modelos termodinâmicos de Kasatkin foram utilizados para cálculo das temperaturas de transformação austenítica. Os resultados mostram que o tratamento realizado na zona de transformação intercrítica favorece a formação de uma estrutura bifásica de ferrita e martensita com maiores valores da tensão de escoamento e resistência máxima à tração. Nos tratamentos térmicos realizados em maiores temperaturas há diminuição na resistência mecânica, porém com aumento no alongamento em consequência de uma estrutura composta de bainita e ferrita acicular.

The need for the hydraulic transportation of coal in the New South Wales coal industry, both from the coal face to the surface and from the coal mine to the consumer or the port for export, is explained. Details of research projects currently in&apos;progress and involving the hydraulic transportation of New South Wales coals are given together with information on the hydraulic transportation of coal in the United States of America.The potential of hydraulic transportation as a viable alternative to the proposed expansion and upgrading of the New South Wales railway system to meet the projected New South Wales coal production to the year 2000 is described.

The study presented in this paper is based on the Kiirunavaara underground mine located in the northern part of Sweden. The deposit is mined using the sublevel caving (SLC) mining method. This paper briefly reviews the alternative SLC layouts, as well as presents challenges for the application. In Kiirunavaara currently, the traditional SLC design is employed, however, continuous improvement of material transportation systems used in mines generates a need for investigation of the current and future production area layouts in sublevel caving mines. When identifying the potential benefits of the alternative production area layouts, the production targets and effects must be further investigated to understand the benefits and potential effects. In this study, several different layouts have been investigated and evaluated. The designs include different development configurations and orepass infrastructure moved further away from the orebody and still require further investigation.

Thermal etch patterns developed on poly crystalline 3.5 pct Si-Fe by heating in hydrogen or in argon have been examined. The most prominent feature of the etching is the development of striations on grains with (100) planes near the plane of the surface. These striations are probably produced by the resoution of a random, high-energy plane into (100) facets of lower energy. THE thermal etching of iron and iron-base alloys has a long history. The phenomenon was observed by Osmondl more than 70 years ago. The literature on thermal etching between that time and 1951 was reviewed by Olney,2 and a briefer review appeared in 1958. 3 The only articles which have been found dealing with the thermal etching of silicon iron are those of Dunn and Lionetti4 and of Dunn, Daniels, and Bolton,5 and they reported only grain boundary etching. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES A cast 3.5 pet Si-Fe alloy was given a metallo-graphic polish and etch, then placed in flowing purified hydrogen for 6 hr at 2200°F. The same specimen was later repolished and etched to remove the thermal etching. The specimen was then held in flowing purified argon at 2200°F for 72 hr. In both instances the specimen was rapidly cooled by being pulled up quickly into the cold zone of the furnace. All photomicrographs shown are of the surface as removed from the furnace. Oblique illumination was essential for observation of the thermal-etching effects with a light microscope and was used for all the photomicrographs. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Grain boundary etching, grain boundary movement, and contouring within grains are illustrated in Fig. 1. The contours within a single grain followed behind the advancing grain boundary. To determine the average contour interval, or step height, white light was used in an interference microscope. The steps were of the correct magnitude to separate while light into its spectrum of colors. A green light was focused at the top of a contoured area, shifting to red across the field. By using the difference in the dominant wave length of red and green light,6 and counting the number of steps across the area, it was possible to obtain a value of about 80A for the average step height. Laue back-reflection patterns of four grains with contour lines showed that the grains had a (100) plane slightly inclined to the plane of the surface (± 5 deg). Insofar as this could be determined from their irregular traces, the contour lines within a grain had a common direction, <100> ± 5 deg.

The first session was held in the rooms of the American Philosophical Society, on Tuesday evening, February 26th. The President, Dr. T. Sterry Hunt, called the meeting to order, and after a few introductory remarks concerning the importance of theoretical and speculative science, which often involves principles of the highest economic value, and, more than all that, serves to enlarge our conceptions of the universe, and ennoble us, by the cultivation which it affords to our most exalted faculties, proceeded to discuss some points in the chemistry of the atmosphere. It is known that there is in the crust of the earth a great amount of oxidized carbon, not only in the shape of coal, but also in the graphite or plunlbago of the crystalline rocks, in the various bituminous shales or pyroschists, which are found in all succeeding rock-formations, and also in the forms of bitumen and petroleum. All the analogies of nature lead us to conclude that these various carbonaceous substances have had an organic origin, and have been generated by the deoxidation of carbonic acid, a process effected by the growing plant, and attended with the liberation of oxygen. He showed that the carbon of a layer of coal covering the whole earth&apos;s surface to the thickness of one meter, would, in its production from carbonic dioxide, liberate an amount of oxygen equal to that now present in our atmosphere. But bituminous coal contains also a large amount of hydrogen, derived from the deoxidation of water, which implies the liberation of a farther portion of oxygen. The amount from this latter source would equal, for the various coals and asphalts, from one-eighth to one-fourth, and, for the petroleums, onehalf of that set free in the deoxidation of the carbon which these hydrocarbonaceous bodies contain. From what we know of the composition of the stratified rocks, it is probable that they include an amount of deoxidized carbon and hydrogen many times greater than that contained in a layer of coal one meter in thickness, and, consequently, that the disengaged oxygen in past ages must have far exceeded that now present in our atmosphere. This investigation addressed the possibility of producing pellet feed at a silica content of = 1.0% using a representative sample of Samarco´s mechanical flotation tailings. This sample contained 11.0% Fe and presented an F80 = 116 µm and a d50 = 63 µm. The higher silica content was verified in the coarser fractions and the higher iron content in the fraction -37 µm. Specular hematite is the most abundant mineralogical phase in the fraction -37 µm. The technological tests used one of four methods: magnetic concentration using a wet high-intensity magnetic separator, magnetic concentration using a SLon high-gradient magnetic separator, reverse flotation or direct flotation. The methods using the magnetic concentrator SLon, reverse flotation and direct flotation did not present results meeting the target of the study: iron content in the concentrate (rougher stage) greater than 34% or iron recovery greater than 80%. Cleaner stages were not achievable with the resulting concentrates. In contrast, the most successful method consisted of using wet high-intensity magnetic separators (WHIMS) as a rougher stage and reverse flotation as a cleaner stage. Using this route, it was possible to produce a pellet feed with a silica grade of 1.0% and high specular hematite content.

The concept of an Automated Continuous Explosive Excavation system (ACEE) for the underground mining applications of development drifting and room and pillar mining has been evaluated in comparison with conventional drill, blast and muck operations. The role and possible extent of application as this method was identified. The evaluation examined each element of existing and of proposed ACEE design concepts in a defined mine environment. Step by step procedures were developed to quantify the evaluation process where this appeared feasible. One conclusion drawn was that a system approach to ACEE design is not only feasible but attainable within the state of the art. Several preliminary design concepts were formulated and examined in order to determine what further research or development might be needed to realize them.

I. INTRODUCTION THE following article concerns the geological occurrence of the iron-ore deposits on the south coast of Cuba. The article is based on a detailed field study, made in the hope that some information would I gained which might be of value in the search for further orebodies, Or in the economic development of the ore already found. LOCATION The iron-ore deposits of the Firmeza district lie near the coast, in the southeastern part of Cuba, in the Province of Oriente. The orebodies of this district form part of a belt of deposits that extends from Sigua, 25 miles east of Santiago, to Sevilla, 5 miles east of Santiago, and lies on the seaward slope of the Sierra Maestra range of mountains.

Glencore operates zinc concentrators at both Mount Isa and McArthur River. Both orebodies have a history of complexity and required the development of new technologies to maximise the value from these long-life assets. The Mount Isa orebodies were plagued since operations started in 1931 with complex mineral textures making separation challenging and many areas uneconomic. Examples are given in Figure 1 with different grain sizes from the same orebody in different areas. The McArthur River deposit, located in the Northern Territory, was discovered by Mount Isa Mines geologists in 1955 (Logan, Murray and Williams 1990). The extremely fine-grained nature of the ore was quickly recognised and the difficult separation of the minerals was soon obvious. The geographical, metallurgical and economic factors resulted in the orebody not being developed until the technologies for the mineral separation had been developed. The development of the IsaMill allowed for an economic mineral separation flowsheet to be developed and ore treatment commenced in May 1995 (Nihill, Stewart and Bowen 1998).
