When advanced high strength steel (AHSS) is rolled at a high reduction ratio, the forward slip ratio in cold rolling tends to be lower than that of the other softer strips such as low-carbon steels, and the work roll sometimes skids the strip. To identify why forward slip ratio of AHSS at a high reduction ratio becomes smaller than that of low-carbon steel, the relationship between the reduction ratio and forward slip ratio was investigated by a rolling experiment. For this trial, a 4Hi laboratory cold mill was used. AHSS and low-carbon steel coils were rolled by two different rolls that were set to 0.3 and 0.6 μmRa to create two types of friction conditions. Furthermore, the rolling conditions were numerically analyzed to determine the influence of friction coefficient and flow stress on the relationship between forward slip ratio and reduction ratio. The experimental investigation and numerical analysis revealed that the forward slip ratio reduced with increasing rolling reduction ratio in a low friction state; contrarily, it increased with increasing rolling reduction ratio in a high friction state. This feature was clearly visible when harder materials were rolled.

Thermodynamic properties of chromium oxides in molten slags are very important for optimization of stainless steel refining processes as well as reduction processes of chromium ores. The solubility of chromite into molten slags has been found to vary considerably with oxygen partial pressure and slag composition in former studies by the authors. In the present study, activity data and redox equilibria of chromium oxides measured under moderately reducing conditions, PO2= 6.95x10–11atm, at 1873 K are summarized. For the CaO-SiO2-CrOXsystem, the activity coefficient of chromium oxide increased with increasing basicity, and the optimized slag composition for stainless steel refining is assessed as that saturated with CaCr2O4and Cr2O3usingthe phase relations determined. On the other hand, the presence of MgO and Al2O3brings about different behaviour of chromium oxide activity and redox equilibiria and the 44 mass per centCaO-39 mass per cent SiO2-11 mass per cent Al2O3-6 mass per cent MgO slag is recommended toreduce the chromium oxidation loss in the practical stainless steel refining process at 1873 K. Injection luminescence of single crystals of rare-earth-activated CdS was investigated. Crystals of CdS:Nd, CdS:Er, and CdS:Yb, grown by the vapor transport technique, were suitably etched and hetero-junctions of Cu2S-CdS were fabricated on one side of the CdS substrate by chemical reaction. The device was then heated to 200°C in an inert atmosphere for 5 min. Static V-I measurements show that at low voltages (V < 1 v) the current is controlled by the junction, while at higher voltages the bulk Properties of the CdS substrate effectively control the current. Because of the large thicknesses no negative resistance was found. Reverse breakdown voltage varied from 5 v, for junctions that were not heat-treated, to 100 v, for diodes that received the proper heat treatment. The rectification ratio, measured in the range of 2 to 10 v, varied from 300 to 3000. Capacitance- voltage measurements indicate a weak dependence of the junction capacity on applied voltage. The capacity was found to increase appreciably with room light illumination. The variation of capacitance with frequency is indicative of a p+-i-n structure. An open-circuit voltage of 0.4 v was measured under an illumination of 100 mw per sq cm. Under forward bias, the bluish-green edge emission characteristic of CdS was observed. No sharp rare earth emission line was observed, which is in contrast to our results using ZnS:Tb, where, under high-voltage excitation, the rare earth emission was dominat over the lattice emission. The absence of rare earth emission implies that either the nature of the rare earth ion is different at the het-erojunction than in the bulk or the probability of energy transfer to the rare earth ion is small. A quantitative chemical model of the rocks of the Broken Hill lode environment is presented to illustrate a stratiform orebody in a meaningful form to scientists interested in environmental control on the chemicalcomposition of sediments.Even though this study was restricted by the narrow range of rock analyses available it is obvious that significant chemical differences exist between the various rock units and also that some association of metallic sulphides with Ca, Mn, Fe, and P is indicated.Correlation of this evidence with that from other mining fields may point out more definite chemical relationships and elucidate the puzzle of the mode of formation of many stratiform orebodies.

The Wyoming craton in the western United States is a favorable terrane for diamond deposits. The craton hosts a variety of ultramafic, ultrabasic, and ultrapotassic rocks. Additionally, a few hundred &apos;kimberlitic&apos; heavy mineral anomalies and some geophysical and remote sensing anomalies indicate the presence of undiscovered, mantle-derived, pipes in the craton. The Wyoming craton is separated into a Wyoming &apos;archon&apos; known as the Wyoming Province, and the Colorado &apos;proton&apos; known as the Colorado Province. The &apos;archon&apos; underlies much of Montana and Wyoming and continues north into Alberta and Saskatchewan; the Colorado &apos;proton&apos; underlies much of Colorado and a small portion of Wyoming. Although most exploration geologists would consider the &apos;archon&apos; the most favorable terrane for commercial diamond deposits, the &apos;proton&apos; has produced more than 120,000 diamonds, while the &apos;archon&apos; has not been very productive.

Mispah form (FAO: Lithosol) soil contaminated with >380 000 mg kg-1 creosote was co-composted with sewage sludge and poultry manure for a period of 19 months. The soil was mixed in a ratio of 1:1 (v/v) with wood chips to improve aeration. The soil-wood chips mixture was then mixed in a ratio of four soil-wood chips mixture: one compost material (sewage sludge or poultry manure). Compost heaps were set up in triplicate on wood palettes overlaid with double layers of nylon straw bags. Control experiments, which contained the contaminated soil-wood chips mixture without sewage sludge or poultry manure were set up in triplicate. Moisture, temperature, pH, ash content, C:N ratio of the compost and the creosote concentration of the soil was monitored monthly. The concentration of selected creosote components in the soil was also determined at the end of the incubation period. Temperature was observed to rise to about 60¦C in the poultry manure and about 58¦C in the sewage sludge within two months of incubation, while temperature in the control fluctuated between 15¦C and 35¦C throughout the incubation period. Creosote concentration in the control was reduced by 17 per cent at the end of the incubation period while concentration of creosote in the sewage sludge and poultry manure compost was reduced by about 99 per cent. The percentage rate of creosote reduction in the poultry manure compost was initially lower than observed in the sewage sludge compost. However, the reduction rate became similar towards the end of the treatment period. The concentrations of selected creosote components were reduced by about 100 per cent within the same period. Respiration of compost microorganisms and counts of microbial populations showed that microbial activity correlated with reduction in creosote concentration.

Particles finer than 10 um often cause problems in flotation. The current under- standing of the nature of the following effects is discussed: slime coatings on particles, carrier flotation, increased froth stability, entrainment of ultrafine gangue, excess reagent consumption, slower rate of flotation, more reactive surfaces. The review emphasizes the principles underlying these effects rather than details of progress in practical solutions to the problems they cause. The princi- ples of selective flocculation and floc flotation and the various approaches to achieving selectivity are discussed. Hydrodynamic effects on floc growth are reviewed. The evidence suggests that satisfactory performance in the ultrafines fraction will be achieved only by simul- taneously increasing the rate of flotation of the ultrafine valuable mineral and de- creasing the rate of entrainment of ultra- fine gangue.

Ferrograde manganese ore or its equivalent is essential to the manufacture of every ton of steel produced; although it is well-known that there are largo deposits of low-grade ore in the United States, production of substantial amounts of ferrograde material from domestic sources presents a problem that becomes more and more critical as the stock piled ore is depleted through inability to obtain adequate supplies from foreign sources. Consequently, a program of laboratory and pilot-plant investigations designed to solve the problem of obtaining a domestic supply of manganese has been undertaken by the Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines. This paper is one of a new series that will include reports of results obtained in the various investigations conducted under the manganese program. The scope of the program and the organization that was set up to direct and supervise the work were discussed in the foreword of the first paper of this series, Report of Investigations 3506, Manganese Investigations 1. One of the main advantages of the supported liquid membrane(SLM) would be that different kinds of ions can be extracted selectively or simultaneously from multi-component solutions by parallel treatments with multi-SLM units. This distinctive feature of the SLM extraction is originated from its non-dispersive contacting operation between organic and aqueous phases. In this study, simultaneous and selective extractions of zinc and copper ions from their mixed solutions have been demonstrated using two parallel modules of SLMs. PC88A and LIX84 were used as the extractants for zinc and copper, respectively, and the Hoechst Celanese hollow fiber modules(Liqui-Cel Lab Module) as the supporters. The performance of the simultaneous system was compared with those of the system in which the extraction of each component was achieved by individual runs

In 1995 Standards Australia International Limited æSAIÆ published a risk management standard titled AS/NZS 4360 Risk Management. It was the first such standard published by a recognised formal standards body anywhere in the world and it put Australia at the leading edge of the risk management discipline. Many Australian and international organisations have utilised the risk management standard and it is one of SAIÆs most important and popular standards. Since its publication in 1995, the risk management standard has gone through a major revision in 1999 and is currently undergoing another such review, which is due for completion in 2004. This paper will chart the application of the standard within certain key organisations since its inception in 1995. A brief overview of the methodology behind AS/NZS 4360 will be presented as well as an overview of supporting and related standards. It is prudent to base risk management and other management system issues on existing and tested standards rather than creating new proprietary approaches. Examples of areas in which the risk management standard might be applied in the mining industry are given, subject to the specific operations of each company: technical, commercial, environmental, informational, and safety and regulatory.

Recovery of metals from reserves with low grade and from waste with high presence of contamination is a challenge to be overcome. Metals like nickel, cobalt and copper could be recovery from nickel laterite leach waste by many different processes. Among recovery processes that could be applied are ion exchange, solvent extraction and precipitation. The aim of this work was recover copper from liquor of nickel laterite by precipitation using chemical reduction. Copper concentration in liquor was 146 mg L −1 and reducing agent used was sodium dithionite 1 mol L −1. Influence of stirring speed was studied between 0–200 rpm. Results indicated a selective precipitation of copper on solution with others metals at 240 mV. The analyzes were conducted in SEM, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and XRD, that indicated presence of copper and sulfur.

A mine is essentially a vast materials-handling system. All other systems found in the mine exist to one degree or another to support the materials-handling functions, from the cutting at the face to the hoisting in the shaft. In this chapter computerized planning of underground materials-handling systems will be examined by dividing this function into: (1) the planning of the production section, and (2) the planning of underground rail or belt haulage from the production section to the shaft, slope, or surface. While alternative divisions might focus on the different materials- handling functions, i.e., production, supply, and manpower transportation, historical computer analysis has focused on the various systems rather than functions. The emphasis in this chapter is directed toward coal mine applications; however, most of the programs and methods are equally applicable to other underground mines. Markedly different methods are encountered in each system, and moreover, marked differences exist in the nature and the degree to which the materials-handling subsystems in each interact with the environmental or support systems. The most intimate interaction exists at the faces where geologic, human, and machine performance factors are closely related and constantly varying. In view of this, the planning of the materials-handling systems for the face will usually stress flexibility, while the outby materials-handling systems will generally place decreasing emphasis on flexibility and more on system reliability, capacity, and cost effectiveness. Thus, hoisting and main haulage systems are generally designed and constructed as permanent installations and cannot be readily changed, whereas secondary haulage systems and face operations are relatively mobile. These differences may have considerable significance for the mine planner in making technical and financial comparisons of alternatives to provide the scheduled mine production.

THE theory of hardening by interference with slip which has been so clearly developed by Jeffries and his co-workers requires that an alloy to be amenable to age or heat hardening should contain among its components some that will stay in solid solution at high temperatures and precipitate as a secondary phase on cooling. This secondary phase may be either a more or less pure individual element (chromium in the case of copper, anti-mony in the case of lead), or some intermetallic com-pound. Those cases of hardening which depend on the precipitation of a compound are not only the most frequent, but are also far superior in the efficiency of hardening obtained. However, the slip interference theory as stated in its most general form is not sufficient to foretell new cases of this type of hardening and also will not explain some phenomena of a more intricate nature. It is not sufficient that a secondary phase might be absorbed by the main one at high temperatures and precipitated at the lower ones. The kinetics of this precipitation and the accompanying. physical phenomena of dimensional changes play independent and highly important parts. These kinetics, while not yet sufficiently studied to he formulated in the shape of physicochemical equations, might find their expression-in a qualitative systema-tization of the phenomena of precipitation according to two different viewpoints. To begin with, we encounter the question as to the velocities of the precipitation and of the growth of the phase precipitated. To harden a metal in an efficient manner we must be able to control the precipitation on one hand and also to bring the total of the secondary phase to such a number and size of the particles pre-cipitated as, will produce a desirable hardening effect under commercially feasible conditions of. age or heat hardening. From this viewpoint six different cases may be dis-cerned.

The GPM Gold Project is located in Armenia, and consists of an open cut mine at Zod, near the Azerbaijan border, and a CIL processing plant at Ararat near the Turkish border. Mining at Zod commenced in 1976, and focused on near surface oxide ores, which overlay deeper refractory sulphides. Historical mining has now almost depleted the oxide ores, and the sulphide content of ore delivered to the processing plant at Ararat is increasing. Gold and silver recoveries through the Ararat plant were declining steadily.GeoProMining, the owners of the project, have expanded the Ararat facility to deal with the increasing sulphide content in the ore. In 2014, GeoProMining refurbished an existing concentrator on site to recover a sulphide concentrate from the ore, and have constructed an Albion ProcessTM plant to oxidize the refractory concentrate. Glencore Technology (GT) provided the Albion ProcessTM plant as a technology package.In July 2014, the progress of the GPM Gold Project Albion ProcessTM Plant was reported (Hourn, Voigt and Turner, 2014). At the time of writing, the construction of the plant was nearly complete. This paper presents an update of project progress, covering commissioning and ramp up of the GPM Gold Project.The commissioning phase occurred over June to August 2014, which included an M3,000 IsaMillTM fine grinding plant, a 6 tph limestone milling plant, a 60 tpd vacuum pressure swing adsorption oxygen plant, a 10 m residue thickener and a 12 tph Albion ProcessTM oxidative leach plant. The behaviors and stress distributions of the inclined jointed rock masses with different dip angles obtained from DDA are compared to the results of laboratory tests. By calculating the block stress distributions, it is confirmed that DDA can reproduce the arching around the trap door when lowering the trap door. The shapes of arching change with the angles of inclined layers. In addition, the earth pressures acting on the trap door shows non-symmetrical distributions when the layers are not horizontal. The stress concentration occurs in one side of the rock masses close to the trap door. Furthermore, the surface settlements are also related to the inclined angle, and the loosening zone in rock masses can be different from Terzghi’s theory [1]. Since, simulations have good agreements with the laboratory test , it demonstrates the applicability of DDA to explain the mechanical behaviors of tunnel, such as arching phenomenon, non-symmetrical earth pressure distributions acting on the trap door, and the surface settlement profile in the jointed rock masses. Dans cet article est décrite l’étude numérique du perçage d’un tunnel dans un massif de couches rocheuses jointes inclinées. La simulation à l’aide de l’Analyse de Déformation Discontinue (DDA), en faisant varier l’angle d’inclinaison des couches de roche, nous apporte des résultats en termes de distributions de contraintes et de comportement des couches, résultats qui sont ensuite comparés avec des résultats de tests en laboratoire. Les résultats confirment le fait que la DDA est capable de reproduire le phénomène d’arcage autour de la trappe lorsque la trappe s’abaisse. Les formes d’arcage varient selon l’angle d’inclinaison des couches de roche. Par ailleurs, lorsque les couches ne sont pas horizontales, la distribution de pression agissant sur la trappe est assymmétrique. La concentration de contraintes se produit du coté proche de la trappe. De plus, les tassements de surface dépendent eux aussi de l’angle d’inclinaison. En conséquence, les résultats de simulation sont en accord avec les tests en laboratoire, ce qui prouve que la DDA permet d’expliquer des comportements mécaniques du tunnel tels que l’arcage, les distributions assymmétiques de pression du sol sur la trappe, ainsi que le profil du tassement de surface dans la masse de roches jointes. Die Resultate bestätigen, dass DDA der Gewölbewirkung im „Trapdoor“ Experiment gut reproduzieren kann. Die Form des Gewölbes, ändert sich mit unterschiedlichen Neigungswinkeln der Schichten. Bei geneigten Schichten entstehen unsymmetrische Druckverteilungen. Auch die Oberflächenabsenkung ist von dem Neigungswinkel abhängig. Die gute Übereinstimmung der Simulationen mit den Laborversuchen zeigt, dass die DDA-Methode gut geeignet ist, um das mechanische Verhalten von Tunneln, wie z.B. den Effekt der Gewölbewirkung, die unsymmetrischen Druckverteilungen bei geneigten Schichten, oder die Oberflächenabsenkung in geklüfteten Felsenmassen, zu erklären.
