The heat of solution at infinite dilution of selenium in bismuth, the heat of mixing of selenium and bismuth, and the limit of solubility of selenium in bis~rzuth have been determined at 573, 623; and 663°K by metal solution calorimetry. The heat of forrrzation of the compound Bi2Se at these temperatures has been determined from the heat effects associated with the precipitation of the compound from a saturated solution oj selenium and bismuth. The published information on the thermodynamic properties of the system Bi-Se is limited. The heat of solution at infinite dilution of selenium in bismuth at 623°K has been measured.' The heat of formation at 273 K1 and room temperature2 and the heat capacity at 80 K3 of the compound Bi2Se3 have been reported. An estimate of the heat of formation of the compound BiSe at room temperature has been published.2 Information on the phase relations in the system Bi-Se is available.' In the investigation reported here the following quantities have been determined at 573", 623", and 663°K: 1) the heat of solution at infinite dilution of selenium in bismuth, 2) the heat of mixing of selenium and bismuth in bismuth-rich solutions, 3) the limit of solubility of selenium in bismuth, and 4) the heat of formation of the compound BizSe. These quantities were determined by the addition of selenium to bismuth-rich solutions in a metal solution calorimeter. The determination of the heat of formation at the tem- perature of the calorimeter bath involved the precipitation of the compound from a saturated solution in the calorimeter. 5,6 This method differs from that commonly used which requires the addition of the compound and of a mechanical mixture of its components and yields the heat of formation at the temperature from which the additions are made (273 K EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE AND CALCULATIONS The solution calorimeter has been described in detail.' Pure bismuth (99.999+ pct) was used as the bath at the start of a run. The calorimeter was calibrated with small amounts of bismuth added from 273°K; the differences of the heat contents of bismuth at 273°K and the temperatures of the baths are listed in Table I. After the calibration, additions of hexagonal selenium (99.999+ pct) were made. Loss of selenium by evaporation was negligible. No unusual experimental difficulties were encountered.9 The differences in the heat contents10 of selenium at 273°K and the temperature of the bath, listed in Table I, were subtracted from the measured heat effects to give the "adjusted heat effects". IT is well established that dislocations exist in crystals and account for crystal plasticity.' However, the origins of the dislocations are not clear. Among the means by which dislocations might originate are: a) through crystal growth accidents, b) by the collapse of condensed sheets of vacancies, or c) by stress-induced nucleation. Theoretical calculations' have indicated that the last means should require very high stresses in order to operate. The purpose of this paper is to show that the stresses around the tips of cracks are large enough to nucleate large numbers of dislocation loops. Specifically, it will be shown that (100) cleavage cracks in LiF crystals nucleate dislocations in regions of the crystals where dislocations did not exist previously. It is believed that the use of LiF for this investigation does not restrict the significance of the 1 results. In fact, it is believed that this complements and extends previous papers by the same author which dealt with metal crystals.10,14 The dislocations were detected by means of the etching techniques that were described in a previous paper by Gilman and Johnston.3 In that paper it

ONE of the most interesting features of the world's platinum situation has been the steady increase of Russian production, which had dropped to 11,000 oz. in 1920, but increased to 92,000 oz. in 1926, and to probably over 100,000 oz. for 1927. It is ex-pected that Russian production of platinum will, be-fore long, closely equal its pre-war production, or approximately 200,000 oz. annually. The world production before the war was around 250,000 oz.; that for 1925 has been estimated at 160,000 oz., and for 1926 probably 170,000 oz. The consump-tion of platinum has, however, decreased. The esti-mate of the International Selling Agency was a de-mand of 130,000 oz. new platinum against a normal pre-war demand of over 200,000 oz. The high price of platinum during the war gave an added impetus to the search for substitutes for the metal, and sev-eral were developed that are now used extensively in place of platinum. The demand for platinum for high-class jewelry, however, was not greatly affected by the high prices, but "white" gold did replace platinum in the cheaper jewelry. Colombia is the most important producer of plati-num, next to Russia, and the production has increased from around 10,000 oz. pre-war production to 55,000 oz. or more in 1927. In 1924 important discoveries of platinum were made in South Africa. Prior to these discoveries practically all platinum was recovered from alluvial deposits, and the South African opera-tions are first to work an ore profitably for the pri-mary recovery of platinum. A number of companies were formed to develop these deposits, but only a few made any real progress. Total production for 1926 was about 5000 oz. The United States production is unimportant; that in Canada has increased to around 9000 oz., principally as a by-product in nickel-copper ores.

An experimental investigation and mathematical analysis of the thermal-dilation behavior of the titanium alloy Ti-7Al-3Cb have shown that the linear dimensional changes associated with the polymorphic transformation need not be isotropic. The absolute magnitude of the linear dimensional change, which may be either positiue or negative, associated with the cr-p transformation is dependent upon the relutzve volumes of different orientations of the transformation product. It is hypothesized that the dilation irregulati-ties that have been observed during the polymorphic transformation of pure, coarse-grained titanium and other titanium-base alloys can be explained in the same manner. When titanium is heated above about 165O°F, the hcp a structure transforms to bcc 0. Thermal-dilatioh measurements have shown that the transformation is accompanied by a decrease in length of 0.16 pct.' Such dilation behavior would be expected because the volume of the hcp unit cell is about 0.3 to 0.4 pct greater than that of the bcc unit cell. A recent investigation2 of the thermal-dilation behavior of an experimental a-p* titanium alloy, Ti- 7A1-3Cb, containing 0.06 wt pct 0 showed that its dilation behavior during the polymorphic transformation differed substantially from that reported for unalloyed titanium. The first time the alloy was cycled through the transformation, the dilation curve closely duplicated that of unalloyed titanium. However, upon repeated cycling through the transformation temperature range, both the magnitude and the sign of the dimensional change associated with the transformation were observed to vary with each cycle. This investigation was undertaken to obtain additional data on the dimensional changes associated with the polymorphic transformation in the Ti-7A1-3Cb alloy and to determine the cause of the dimensional irregularities. After testing, the specimens were examined metallo-graphically. In addition, Laue back-reflection patterns were obtained from selected sections taken perpendicular to the specimen axes to determine the a orientations present in these sections. White radiation from a tungsten target and a 0.1-mm-diam collimator were used to produce the diffraction patterns. RESULTS Dilation Curves. Three types of thermal-dilation curves were obtained when the a-8 titanium alloy was heated and cooled through the transformation temperature range. These three types of curves are illustrated in Fig. 1. The type I curve represents what is considered normal behavior, because the dilation change is what would be expected on the basis of the volumes of the unit cells of a and p. The Type I1 curve is the inverse of Type I. Normal behavior is characterized by an expansion on cooling through the transformation, whereas a contraction takes place in the Type 11 curve. With Type ni behavior, no clearly distinguishable length change occurs during the transformation. No other anomalies that might be indicative of other phase transformations were observed in the dilation curves at lower temperatures. Apparently, the cooling rate was low enough for equilibrium to be reached during the 0 to a transformation. Table I lists the types of dilation curves observed during the polymorphic transformation as a function of the direction of measurement and cycle number. The A1 value was determined by extrapolating the low-temperature (a + 5 pct p) and high-temperature (100 pct p) segments of the dilation curves to a common temperature and measuring the difference in the or-dinates at that temperature, see Fig. 1. The transformation occurs over a temperature range in this alloy, so the magnitude of A1 is not an absolute value but depends on the choice of temperature. A mean temperature, T,, within the transformation temperature range was selected for the measurement. T, on cooling occurred about 100°C lower than T, on heating. The first time each of the three dilation specimens was heated to above the temperature, that is, Cycle 2, normal Type I behavior was observed. In Cycle 3, two deviations from normal behavior occurred. First, during cooling of the longitudinal specimen, a substantially larger expansion, +0.21 pct, was measured as 0 transformed to a compared with +0.03 pct in Cycle 2. Second, the thickness specimen was observed to undergo a contraction instead of the anticipated expansion on cooling. Continued cycling of the three specimens from room temperature to 2500°F produced additional changes in the dilation behavior. These changes did not seem to be related to the fabrication direction of the alloy because the values of a1 for the longitudinal, transverse, and thickness specimens varied unpredictably in magnitude and sign. Furthermore, both the longitudinal and transverse specimens showed all three types of dilation curves at least once during the six cycles that they received. "A gold bearing pyrite concentrate was treated at the demonstration scale (15 t/d) for the extraction of gold using a cyanide-free process. The pyrite was depressed in the flotation circuit in order to promote the flotation of copper and to achieve a sufficient copper grade to meet the copper smelter criteria. However, the recoveries of copper were 80% and only about 50% for the gold was found in the copper concentrate. The balance of the gold (50%) and copper (20%) contained in the pyrite concentrate as a reject from an overall flotation circuit. The gold grade in the pyrite concentrate is 5.40 g Au/t and copper about 0.77%. About 170 tons of pyrite concentrate were processed in the DST demonstration plant. The concentrate was first oxidized using a fluid bed to produce a calcine. Copper was then extracted as copper sulphate using diluted sulphuric acid. The residual solid was submitted to the DST chlorination process for gold extraction. Thereafter, the gold was recovered from the pregnant brine by precipitation over silica using DST proprietary process. The maximum gold recovery by chlorination was 90%. The average gold recovery by cyanidation of these calcines was 71%.IntroductionDundee Sustainable Technologies (“DST”) has developed a chlorination process as an alternative to the conventional cyanidation process for the extraction of precious metals from ores or concentrates. The technology offers viable and efficient gold recoveries and the ability to handle refractory ores and contaminated material (As, Hg, etc..). The process was successfully demonstrated on hundreds of samples provided by various mines, exploration and development projects and has evolved from laboratory experiment to demonstration at an industrial scale.DST’s chlorination process operates in a closed loop circuit, which implies that no liquid effluents are generated. The chemistry and process design allows precious metal deposits containing base metals to be treated viably. The tailings from the process are inert and non-toxic, sulphide depleted and thus non-acid generating. The efficiency of the process has demonstrated excellent gold recoveries within a fraction of the time needed for cyanidation to obtain similar results. The company completed in 2015 the construction of the first industrial demonstration plant operating with the DST technology. The plant has a capacity of 15 tons per day of mineral concentrate, and the ability to extract gold and silver utilizing DST chlorination technology.DST has tested its chlorination technology at demonstration scale on the refractory pyrite concentrate containing 5.40 g Au/t and 0.8 %copper. This auriferous pyrite concentrate, was by-product of copper concentrate respecting the copper smelter norms, is produced in a country where cyanide is prohibited and refractory to cyanidation. The pyrite concentrate was initially processed successfully (gold recoveries: > 90%) by the DST technology at laboratory (2011: 20 kg) and pilot (2014: 5 tons) scales to extract gold. About 170 tons of this pyrite concentrate were processed in the DST demonstration plant located in Thetford Mines."

Radioactive; tracer techniques we?-e used to study solute distvihutions along llze specimens and irmpurity substructures, as functions of the conditions growth. The results have heen mzalyzed using Burton, Prim, and Slichter's tnodel for the solute disty-ihution in the liquid ahead of an advancing solid-liquid interface. DECANTING techniques have been used to establish criteria for the formation of impurity substructure during solidification in several alloy systems An analysis equating the appearance of impurity substructure with the incidence of constitutional supercooling was developed,= in which diffusion was assumed to be the predominant mode of solute mixing in the liquid. Substitution of experimental data into the equations derived from the diffusion analysis gave reasonable values for solute diffusivity in the liquid. However, in these investigations solidification rates of 10 cm per hr and over were used, to minimize the effect of natural conection, whereas for crystals of high perfection lower solidification rates are needed, usually between 1 and 5 cm per hr. A knowledge of the conditions under which impurity substructures will be formed at low growth rates, and the degree of segregation to be expected, is therefore of interest. In the present investigation, radioactive-tracer techniques have been used to study the effect of growth rate, initial solute concentration, and size of specimen on the formation of substructure in uni- directionally solidified rods of dilute silver in tin alloys, over a range of growth rate between 0.5 and 10 cm per hr. Criteria for the formation of substructure were established by auto radiography. This was believed preferable to the decanting technique, for the relationship of the structure on a decanted interface with that of the freezing interface is not clear, since a layer of liquid is left on the surface following decanting.' The effect of substructure on the distribution of solute along the rods was also investigated. EXPERIMENTAL The procedure for sample preparation has been described in detail by einber. Alloys were prepared from tin of 99.999 pct purity and silver of 99.99 pct purity. A"', an emitter of both y and 0 radiation, was used as tracer. Samples of the alloys were drawn up into silica tubes with inside diameters 0.5 or 2 mm, remelted in a horizontal furnace, and solidified at controlled rates. A few centimeters of the samples were left unmelted for a measure of the initial concentration. Total sample length was approximately 20 cm. The temperature gradient in the furnace was kept constant at 36°C per cm in the region corresponding to the melting point for tin. To find how well this corresponded to the actual temperature gradient in the melt, a thermocouple of 38-gage wire was electrically insulated with a thin layer of Sauereisen cement and placed within one of the 2-mm-diam tubes, which was then filled with tin. The maximum diameter of the coated wire was 0.5 mm, the bead of the thermocouple junction being no larger than the diameter of the wire. HSM can be divided into different groups such as Conventional HSM with Roughing stands and HSM without Roughing stands = Mills with just finishing stands. The roll requirements for different stands are quite different. In Roughing stands the temperature of the slab is very high. Therefore the resistance against thermal wear/fatigue is the most dominating factor. Today mostly Chrome Steel, Semi HSS and HSS rolls are applied. A comparison and evaluation of such rolls will be described. In the finishing mill the tendency/wish is to use HSS rolls in all the stands. The grade HSS is defined by at least a certain amount of carbide forming elements such as V, W, Mo, Nb etc. The matrix and other precipitations can be adjusted according to the need and situation in the mill. In the pre-finishing stands the HSS is already well introduced. In the last finishing stands the original HSS tended to stick and the cobble rate increased. New development decreased the problem and gave some very promising results. In the last finishing stands beside the high performance a higher resistance against incidents is needed. Solutions in this direction including e.g. residual stresses and special core material will be discussed. Proper testing and grinding procedures can avoid losses and reduce the TCO. Data sourcing and evaluation in regards of rolling and grinding is the key for the optimization of the TCO. Several examples and comparison between different applications will be given in detail and explained. Future possibilities will be discussed as well as results of latest trials in mills.

To develop a system which will effectively detect and extinguish fires in underground fueling areas while also providing a warning for nearby miners. Approach A system involving optical fire sensors. automatically-released dry chemical and aqueous film-forming fluid (AFFF) fire suppressants, and automatic alarms was designed from off-the-shelf, state-of-the-art components, and was in-mine tested at two mines in the two typical underground fueling area situations: fuel transfer areas and fuel storage areas. How It Works As mines become more mechanized, the number of fire hazards increases since fueling areas are more abundant. Fire hazards are especially serious in deep mines, since escape time is longer. To help solve this growing problem, the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), has developed and in-mine tested a cost-effective fueling area fire protection system. The system was designed to be rugged enough for reliable, long-term use, yet to utilize state-of-the-art, off-the-shelf components to maintain cost-effectiveness. The system consists of cross-zoned, ultraviolet flame sensors used for quick response to fire, and a dual-agent fire suppression subsystem. A dry chemical is used for fast fire -knockdown," and AFFF (or "light water") is used for long-term, fire-securing capability. The basic components of the system are shown in the schematic illustration.

"In the mining industry, rock excavation is the first phase of the comminution process. Downstreamoperations such as secondary breaking, crushing and milling terminate the process, reducing the size of the grains down to the desired particle distribution. In such a cascade process, every process upstream heavily influences all the downstream operations. When rock excavation is carried out by drilling and blasting, a very economic source of energy (the explosive) is used at the utmost upstream; a more expensive source of energy (electricity) is employed for all the downstream phases. This means that managing the correct employ of the explosive energy is a form of managing the whole process, controlling the operational costs and therefore the profitability of the whole business. We simulated this cascade behavior, using as a starting point the experimental data obtained from small-scale block blasting, evaluating the influence of blasting on the grindability of the blasted material. This study showed the reduction in visible (particle size) and invisible fracturing (micro-cracking, resulting in a reduction of the Work Index WI). The particle size distribution for full-scale blasts was estimated by means of algorithm simulation, then we simulated the behavior of the comminution plant fed with the material possessing the characteristics previously estimated. All the costs (drilling, blasting, electric energy for the engines of the crushers and mill) were calculated and charted. The results show a clear curve that allows to estimate the minimum operating expenditure (OPEX) for the whole mine+plant framework. Being the WI dependent on the output on the blast, one can manage the performance and the expenditure of the whole comminution process by adjusting drilling and blasting parameters For any given mine, it is possible to perform a simulation and encounter the minimum OPEX scenario for the comminution process and managerial choices can be oriented accordingly. In a cascade productive chain as mining is, responsible strategic choices must be taken looking at the entire production framework. Compartmentalized managerial staff and budgets for separated production areas are not acceptable anymore. Somehow higher costs upstream can lead to effective decrease in costs and increase in efficiency and productivity of the processes downstream."

The Barrick North Mara Mine and the Advanced Systems Group at SGS Minerals collaborated on the implementation of a grinding expert system for the control and optimisation of a single semi autogenous (SAG) mill. Over the last 5 years, grinding expert control has gained wide acceptance by mineral processors. In this paper, two key factors for success are highlighted: the adaptability of the software tools and the interaction with site personnel. Created with SGS?s MET expert console (MEC) toolkit, and running on Gensym?s G2 real time inference software, the North Mara expert logic has been set up to keep a steady and on spec leaching feed slurry while striving to maximize throughput. Leach feed stability was achieved by standardizing operating practices across shifts; a result of successful collaboration with site personnel in developing a consistent control strategy. The strategy maintains the SAG load and power draw in an optimised range by manipulating SAG feed rates and inlet water flow. The project life-cycle was slightly longer than average due to site specific constraints. One of these was the high turnover rate of site?s workforce during the project, coupled with the availability of key staff on site due to the fly in fly out work roster. These constraints called for different, and innovative ways of project commissioning and hand-over. This paper describes details of the control solution, its implementation as well as results and conclusions.

The power plant of the Burro Mountain Copper Co. is located near Tyrone, N. M., at 5,950 ft, elevation. It is interesting because it uses the largest stationary Diesel engines in the United States. The general layout of the plant is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The building is of steel-frame construction with hollow-tile walls and corrugated-iron roof; the floor is concrete and all windows have steel frames, making a fireproof building. The building is made to accommodate one more electric generator unit, which is being installed; also two 4,000-cu. ft. air compressors direct-connected to three-cylinder engines with the same size cylinders as the electric units. The power plant consists of two 815-kva., 60-cycle, three-phase, 6,600-volt, 180-r.p.m. generators, direct-connected to five-cylinder, two-cycle Diesel engines; the necessary circulating pumps for cooling water, cooling towers and oil storage tanks. A portion of the power is used in the same building as the generating units to run one of two 200-kw. rotary converters delivering 260-volt direct current, and a 2,500-cu. ft. air compressor, delivering air at 95 1b.-pressure, direct-connected to a 400-hp., 6,600-volt, three-phase synchronous motor. The remainder of the power is used to run a 1,500-ton concentrating mill 3 1/2 miles from the power house, various hoists, pumps and motors about the mines and the lighting and water-works of the town of Tyrone. The direct current is used for electric traction in the mine, also to run hoists and motors that were installed before the new power plant was built. Due to the large hoists that take starting peaks of 250 kw. and the 10-ton electric locomotive that takes at times 150 kw., the load is extremely variable, as shown in Fig. 3. "In this study, hardness test, differential scanning calorimetry(DSC)and transmission electron micros copy were carried out to investigate the age-hardening behavior of Al-Mg-Si alloy with a Mg+Si concentration of 1.5mass%, and a Mg/Si ratio of 1.0. Pre-aging treatment was conducted for the solution-treated and then water-quenched specimen at 100, 80, 60, 40, 20 (natural aging), 0 and -20°C for 20min or 5h, followed by artificial aging at 170°C for 20min. It was found that when pre-aging time is prolonged from 20min to 5h, the bake-hardening response is deteriorated irrespective of the pre-aging temperature. In particular, the specimens subjected to pre-aging at 20-40°C for 5 h hardly increased the hardness with the subsequent artificial aging. From the results of DSC measurement, it was suggested that as pre-aging temperature is lowered, the amount of solute clusters formed during pre-aging, i.e. Mg-Si clusters and Si-rich clusters, is decreased, but the ratio of Si-rich clusters is increased, resulting in the deteriorated bake-hardening response.INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, Al-Mg-Si alloys have been widely used forautomotive body panels due to their excellent characteristics such as high strength-to-weight ratio and good formability. Their strength is increased not only by artificial aging during paint-bake treatment; i.e. “bake-hardening”, but also when kept at room temperature(RT);i.e. “natural aging”, in association with the suppressed bake-hardening response. Such a “negative effect of two-step aging” has been a serious problem because Al-Mg-Si alloy coils are unavoidably maintained at RT in the manufacturing process of body panels; e.g. shipping and storage. However, it was reported that pre-aging above 70°C before the two-step aging can restore the bake-hardening response, and such an improvement is related to the formation of solute clusters(Sato, 2006; Abidet al., 2010; Takaki et al., 2014; Zandbergen et al., 2015). From the comprehensive analysis by three-dimensional atom probe (Aruga et al., 2014 and 2015), it is believed that Mg-Si clusters formed during pre-aging transform into the strengtheningß"" phase, whereas Si-rich clusters formed during pre-aging act as a detrimental precursor of ß""phase. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effect of pre-aging conditions, especially pre-aging temperature and time, on the formation of solute clusters during pre-aging, in order to elucidate the mechanism of the age-hardening behavior of an Al-Mg-Si alloy."

The briquetting of fuel is an industry centuries old and has followed the hammer and tongs method of making use of any by-product fuel by the simple process of sticking the mass together with anything that will stick. If fuel briquetting, as an industry, once in the lead over coal mining, had kept pace by introducing science, there would not at this time be the mad scramble to look up the fuel briquette family tree and accept every new method as fruit without the cultivation that makes fruit worth while. Cultivation of industry is a mass of evidence showing a tremendous expenditure of money for mistakes paving the way to success. Cultivation of the mining industry is practiced by nations and low temperature distillation and fuel briquetting will in the near future receive the same consideration. Fuel briquettes were used as a winter fuel in Ireland and Scotland before the discovery of America' or the introduction of coal as a fuel to replace briquettes in Ireland. This industry was practiced by the peasants who collected peat from the bogs and cut it into brick-shaped blocks, which were set up to dry in the sun and stored under cover for use or for sale. Demand for peat briquettes led to competition that resulted in a highly refined fuel. In some localities the peat was ground and purified from the earth by washing before placing in presses to squeeze out the excess moisture and form a block of peat about four inches thick. These blocks, after standing in the sun for a few weeks, were cut into briquettes about four inches square by twelve inches long and moved under cover where they remained until thoroughly dry. In this form peat makes an excellent fuel with considerable heat, small amount of smoke while burning, and tough enough to stand hauling in carts and boats without breakage. Slack from domestic coal, non-coking and anthracite, has until recently commanded a very low price and the attention of briquette men has centered on ways and means of preparing this class of fuel for the market in the form of briquettes. Industrial plants with automatic stokers have taken kindly to cheap slack or slack that was cheap because the price has been boosted to a figure where the cost of slack plus the cost of binder and operation makes fuel briquettes somewhat expensive. However, fuel briquettes are being turned out in commercial quantities to compete with prepared lump coal and the demand is in favor of the briquette man. Science has been called to aid the briquette and it is possible to purchase a complete coal briquetting plant that will turn out between four tons per hour and thirty tons per hour of briquettes at a calculated cost per ton to cover material and every item down to insurance on the plant. A few briquettes are being ' made with a mixture of- Portland cement and pulverized coal, where this class of briquette is cheap in the making, there is the increased amount of ash due to the cement to contend with and the briquette is not one that can compete with lump coal. Most binders have a fuel value, such as coal tar, pitch, asphalt residium, flour, glue and secret binders. Most briquettes are of an egg shape, weighing between one and one-half ounces and five ounces, pressed to form with a pressure varying between 1,000 pounds and 2,500 pounds per square inch. This' pressure, together with the binder, make a lump of fuel harder than most grades of soft coal. Most of the briquettes are free from pitch odor, and any tendency to leave a trace of the binder on the fingers, easy to handle, quick to, ignite, high in heat value and capable of indefinite storage without any change. Evaporative efficiency of briquetted fuel in stationary, marine and locomotive boilers has proved that a great many low-grade coals can be fired successfully in the briquetted form, where the same fuel without briquetting failed to give boiler rating.

Electricity must be safeguarded everywhere that it is used. The conditions that exist underground make the use of safeguards more essential there than almost anywhere else. Electric Shock Electric shock is the greatest danger in connection with the use of electricity in mines, because conditions existing underground are so favorable to its occurrence. Men are often obliged to work in more or less uncertain light near bare wires that are carrying dangerous potentials. The fact that the men are standing on the earth practically connects them to one terminal of the electric generator. The moat dangerous piece of electrical equipment underground is the trolley wire. It is necessarily bare and extends for long distances throughout a mine, often less than a man's height from the track rail. Sometimes the making up of trips of cars must be done near low-hanging trolley wires. All 'bare wires offer the same danger that troIley wires do, although not to the same extent. Apparatus that has accidentally come in contact with the ungrounded side of an electric circuit is almost as dangerous as the trolley wire. A severe and even fatal shock may be obtained by coming in contact with the frame of a motor or a switch box that has become charged with electricity, or "alive," as it is usually termed. It is also possible to obtain . shocks from the frames of locomotives and cars if track sanding, poor bonding or a similar cause has put a high resistance to earth in the path of the current. Fires Caused by Electricity The danger from fires caused by electricity arises principally from defective installation and careless upkeep or from injuries to equipment resulting from falls of roof or similar causes. Fires may be started by unrelieved short cifiuits, or grounds, by the blowing of open fuses, and by the overheating of resistances. In the submerged arc production of ferromanganese, sillicomanganese and ferrochromium, the coke bed characteristics play an important role. The basic mechanisms of electric current conduction in the coke be dare not yet fully understood, but important parameters are the material resistivity of coke and the contact resistance between the coke particles. Preliminary tests indicate that the contact resistance is of great importance to the bulk resistance of the coke bed. An apparatus measuring the material resistivity and contact resistance of carbon materials has been developed. Both graphite and industrial coke have been tested. The material resistivity tests were performed on single particles to ensure that the effects of pores and cracks were included and the contact resistances were excluded. Two geometries were tested to obtain the contribution of the contact resistance to the total resistance of two connecting particles. The tests were performed in an inert atmosphere at temperatures and current levels found in industrial submerged arc furnaces. The results show that the method has a satisfactory reproducibility. It was found that the contact resistance is about 10 times higher than the resistance of the material when two particles are in perfect contact and that the resistivity of SSAB coke is more than 10 times higher than that of the graphite at room temperature, but with increasing temperature the difference decreases. For SSAB coke the general trend is that both the resistivity and the contact resistance decrease with increasing temperature.

IN the practical heat-treatment of steel the decomposition of austenite usually occurs during cooling rather than at constant temperature. Nevertheless, the course of this decomposition has generally been studied only isothermally. Isothermal studies are not only simpler experimentally, but have the great theoretical advantage that one of the variables, temperature, is constant. It is the purpose of this paper to outline the principles that govern the relations between isothermal and anisothermal? decomposition of austenite, to present and systematize the available experimental information, and to indicate the gaps in the existing knowledge. Some of the experimental information is the result of new work. § Most of it is derived from scattered data in the literature. Many of these data were obtained incidentally in the course of research on other subjects and their significance has not been pointed out and perhaps not understood. It is hoped that this paper will aid future planning of more extensive research on anisothermal decomposition. METHOD In order to study the relations between isothermal and anisothermal decomposition, it appears fruitful to view anisothermal decomposition as taking place at a series of constant temperatures1 (except for the martensite reaction, which does not occur isothermally to an appreciable extent). When the time the steel is at each temperature is finite, the over-all amount of the reaction is considered to be the sum of the amounts occurring at each of the successive temperatures. During continuous cooling or heating, the time the steel is at each temperature and the difference between successive temperatures can be considered to approach zero. The over-all amount of transformation will then be given by integration over the range of temperatures involved. This point of view is advantageous in that it considers anisothermal transformation to be a series of isothermal transformations. The problem thus becomes one of determining the effect of partial decomposition at any given temperature upon subsequent decomposition at another temperature. .NONE of the methods now in use for the transportation of materials underground is entirely free from more or less serious objection. The great flexibility, ease, of control and economy of operation of electric tramming are accompanied by the serious menace of a trolley-wire distributing system. As the gasoline locomotive has even greater flexibility of application and requires no similar dangerous distributing system, it might be considered a safety device which would make possible the elimination of the dangerous trolley system were it not possessed of other objectionable qualities peculiar to itself. It is found that the exhaust gases from the engine may be injurious to the health of those breathing the air in which the locomotive has been operating. While electric shock may kill the individual who makes contact with uninsulated parts, the gasoline engine may be detrimental to the health of all those who have to work within the atmosphere corrupted by exhaust gases. The degree of pollution meas-ures the magnitude of the menace. This may be negligible at times, but with careless operation it becomes serious. The exhaust gases from an engine are composed of, nitrogen, a little free oxygen, hydrocarbons, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide, the last two being considered dangerous. The presence of carbon dioxide as a product of combustion of the gasoline was recognized as an objection from the beginning of the use of these machines, but attention was called to the fact that the amount produced was relatively small as compared to that from other sources of this gas, and it was not likely to be made in dangerous quantities. The effect of carbon dioxide, except in relatively large percentages, is confined to the effect it may have in reducing the oxygen content of the air that is breathed.
