The phenomena of dripping into cavities (e.g., tunnels and drifts) within an unsaturated fractured porous medium under ventilated conditions was studied to improve estimates of dripping rates, drop sizes and the chemical composition of droplets that could affect the integrity of high-level nuclear waste packages placed in drifts. The sensitivity of dripping rates and water chemistry to ventilation was analyzed at various flow rates using analytical expressions linking flow on fracture surfaces to drop formation and evaporation. The model was tested using laboratory experiments involving machined aluminum slabs designed to represent a simplified morphology of a fracture face intersecting a cavity and using natural fracture surfaces from a welded tuff Comparison with ten years of data on dripping in natural caves showed good agreement with model predictions. In particular, for low dripping rates, evaporation due to ventilation leads to larger drop sizes and alters drop chemistry by increasing the concentration of solutes in the drop relative to that in the water flowing on the fracture face.

Flotation process is based on the formation of primary collector-based supramolecular associates at the mineral surface and within the pulp. Supra molecular chemistry allows studying within a common framework, all kinds of molecular associates, from dimers to large assemblies, resulting from spontaneous association of a large number of interacting components of the flotation system, where the collective action of non covalent bonds can have an important role. Self-organization of supra molecular assemblies in the flotation process can be controlled by modifying the chemical structure of the collector, the nature and arrangement of functional group in it, by introducing secondary agents (SA) into the process, to adjust the interaction between the collector and the surface and to control the hydrophobicity of the adsorption bed. This offers broad opportunities to build supramolecular assemblies to improve the efficiency of flotation. Besides, the more complex is the system, the weaker are the interactions, that determine its behavior. This powerful factor still is not employed deliberately to control the flotation process. Organophosphorus compounds (OPC) - dialkyl phosphoric acids whose radicals contain ethoxylated groups ? are considered as nanocompounds, that can be used in building supramolecular assemblies. The presence in an OPC molecule of functional groups (P=O, P (O) O-, P (O) OH), ethoxylated groups, and aromatic rings is the basis for the formation of stable supramolecular associates. Gross formula: C54H94KO16P. Molecular weight is 1069.39. Phosphoryl anion has a regular tetrahedral structure with the angle of 109.5°. Lengths of -P-O- bonds in a PN molecule are 1.7345Å; length of the hydrocarbonic radical C42-C72 = 33.942Å. In an alkaline environment, PN is in the form of the anion, in an acidic environment ? in the form of the polycation due to protonation of the oxygen in the EO group. Chem Office software suite was used to generate three-dimensional images of an OPC molecule in acidic and alkaline environments, to reveal the OPC geometry (bond lengths, valence angles, aliphatic radical length), to identify the collector's binding sites with the mineral surface, to find the most stable and energy-efficient molecular conformations of an OPC molecule and its complexes with minerals under various conditions. Mechanisms of interaction between OPCs and the mineral surfaces are different. In ores whose minerals are dominated by ionic bonds (fluorite), the interaction mainly involves the anionic form of the collector; in ores, whose minerals are dominated by covalent bonds - the oxygen of the phosphoryl group (donor-acceptor interaction) and the oxygen of the ethoxylated groups. This difference is responsible for the formation of spatial associates with different surface layer structures. Introduction of supramolecular chemistry concepts into the analysis of flotation phenomena and mechanisms can become an effective tool for better understanding the flotation process and offers new means of consistently improving its effectiveness.

Tal como ocurre en las todas operaciones mineras de tajo abierto, se espera en los próximos años un incremento sustancial de la cantidad de desmonte a remover conforme se avance las siguientes extensiones de vida. En adición a esta situación, los recientes compromisos globales de reducción de emisiones de carbono exigen reducir progresivamente hasta eliminar el 100% la emisión de carbono, opuesto a lo requerido para seguir operando con métodos convencionales. Estos dos factores afectan la sustentabilidad en el largo plazo en todas las empresas mineras maduras como en el futuro de Antamina.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and in-mine tests on the Racal airstream helmet (Model #AR21) to evaluate its protection efficiency. Laboratory tests indicated that as ambient air velocity increased, the protection offered by the helmet decreased. In tests conducted at several coal mine long-wall sections with face velocities under 400 fpm, the helmet was 84 pct effective at reducing respirable dust in the miner's breathing zone. However, at a high-velocity section, 1,200 fpm, the efficiency of the helmet was significantly reduced, confirming our laboratory results.

The ability to recognize visual cues commonly associated with roof and rib hazards is fundamental to the prevention of groundfall accidents. The perceptual skills that miners possess to visually search and assess hazardous ground conditions differ considerably. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report summarizes recent investigations on the use of stereoscopic (3-D) slides as a training aid for improving the ability of miners to recognize the various geologic and mining-induced irregularities that cause ground-falls. The feasibility of using 3-D slides for training and their effectiveness for representing roof and rib hazard conditions are discussed. Information is presented on equipment and procedures for creating a 3-D slide program that can be updated by mine trainers. Recommendations are made on selection of 3-D equipment and on the use of 3-D slides for training miners to recognize roof and rib hazards.

"Given the severe scarcity of fresh water sources in Northern Chile the use of seawater has become the only alternative to allow mining expansion. This option however poses several technological challenges as a result of the high concentration of natural salts that promote various forms of metal corrosion. Therefore the steel piping protection has been a constant challenge for design engineers responsible for solving the problems of corrosion. Known protection alternatives are varied and expensive, a few of them are rubber coatings, protection based centrifuged concrete, extra wall thickness of pipes in combination with corrosion inhibitors, extra wall thickness of pipes without using corrosion inhibitors, and the use of highly corrosion resistant steel materials.In this framework the aim was to study the corrosion kinetics of carbon steel pipe API 5L X70 under electrochemical and weight loss testing. The test conditions include a range of seawater velocities between 0.2 to 3.0 m/s.For electrochemical experiments the API 5L X70 steel specimen was a 4 mm diameter disk embedded in an 8 mm diameter Teflon rod and exposed to seawater. Duplicated coupons were placed in a standard test apparatus that was built according to the standard ASTM D 2688 – 94.The main results were: a) corrosion mechanism explained in terms of the counterparts partial processes which are the hydrogen evolution and oxygen reduction reaction; b) for the test specimen a corrosion band like feature that suggest a lateral dispersion of aggressive solutions from corrosion pits; c) a range of corrosion rates between 1 and 1.96 mm/year for flow rates between 0.2 and 3.0 m/s; and d) a convenient inhibitor dose between 20–25 mg/L for optimum inhibition efficiency to obtain a maximum value of 80% for corrosion efficiency."

In the course of our studies of the annealing behavior of vapor-deposited silver films we have determined the electrical resistivity as a function of annealing temperature for films in the thickness range of 630 to 3240A. Fig. 1 shows the resistivity of the silver films vs film thickness in as-deposited and annealed conditions. The films were prepared by depositing 99.999 pct pure silver from molybdenum boats onto Vycor substrates. Deposition was conducted at a residual pressure of 5 x 10"6 Torr at rates of 20 to 408, sec-'. Thicknesses were determined using a multiple-beam interferometer. During annealing, resistance was measured using the four-probe method. Measurements were made every 5°C during two consecutive anneals to 300°C under a continuous vacuum of 2 x X6 Torr. The heating and cooling rates during annealing were approximately l° and 2°C min-', respectively. Typical resistivity vs temperature curves are shown in Figs. 2 through 4. There is an inflection point evident at 120°C on Fig. 2, the first anneal of a 3240A film. This inflection point was found on all films above approximately 1!00A on both first and second anneals. Below 1400A the inflection occurred at approximately 180°C. Figs; 3 and 4 show the first and second anneals of a 1370A film. The inflection point occurs at 180°C on the first anneal and approximately 120°C on the second. Our interpretation of this phenomenon is based on oxygen liberation from the film surface. It is well-documented that the presence of oxygen on silver surfaces causes a reversible increase in resistivity.1"3 The liberation of this oxygen, for example during vacuum annealing, would therefore cause a decrease in resistivity as observed on Figs. 2, 3, and 4 as a change in slope. This is accounted for by the decomposition of Ag20 on the film surface. The free energy of AgzO becomes positive between 125" and 225°C.4 The thickness dependence of the inflection points can be explained as an orientation effect. The films used in this study were preferentially oriented with their (111) planes parallel to the Substrate.''~ In addition it has been sten that the thinner films, below approximately 1500A, possess a decided "hill and valley"

The pyrite-sphalerite-galena and barite orebodies at the Rosebery mine are concordant with the shale host rock and have been deformed into one system of folds with an associated axial plane cleavage. The folds are tight and overturned with east-dipping axial planes. Folds in the sulphide ore are commonly disharmonic, particularly between adjacent bands of different composition.Concentric style folds occur in the competent bands, e.g. pyrite-rich bands. Similar style folds are predominant in the less competent sphalerite-galena-rich bands and also in the shale of the host rock. The trends and plunges of the fold hinge-lines are variable but axial planes are of reasonably constant orientation throughout the mine area. The folds in the orebodies are of limited axial extent, approximating to conical folds, and are arranged in en echelon patterns. The fold system was possibly formed in one period of folding by heterogeneous strain that may have been caused by the presence of a mass of tectonically mobile sulphide ore. Lineations parallel to the ore/host rock contacts appear to reflect movement between the ore and the host rock during folding.

A variation of yield and tensile strength with direction has been noted in heat-treated 4340 steel which had been warn-worked by rolling in the austenitic condition prior to quenching. Measurements by X-rays showed a preferred orientation of martensite crystals. Various ideal preferred orientations of martensite were calculated by assuming a preferred orientation for austenite and transforming this to martensite by the Kurdjumov -Sachs and Nishiyama relationships. Comparison with the measured preferred orientation showed that the ideal rolling texture for austenite in 4340 steel could be expressed as a (112) [111] texture with a component of (110) [112]. No evidence was found for any fiber axis in the rolling direction, or fop- a (123) [412] texture. The observed martensite pole figures can be adequately accounted for by these ideal austenite textures and by the Kurdjumou-Sachs or Nishiyama transformation relationships between austenite and martensite. ALTHOUGH preferred orientations are found in cold-rolled steel sheet and in many nonferrous metals, they are not generally encountered in wrought, heat-treated high-strength steels, since such steels are generally not cold worked sufficiently to develop a strong texture, and any texture that is present is removed during heat treatment by the phase transformations taking place. This report gives details on a preferred orientation found in warm-rolled and hardened 4340 steel. In a recent study, a special combination heat-treating and working technique was used in which 4340 steel was deformed in the austenitic condition, and before re crystallization of the austenite could occur, quenched to form martensite.' Since the austenite was unrecrystallized, it was cold worked and hence could have contained a preferred orientation which could be transmitted to the martensite on quenching, and this in turn could be manifested as a directionality of mechanical properties. Such a directionality of properties was found as a result of working, and this prompted an X-ray study of the preferred orientation. Literature Survey— Rolling Texture in Face-Cen-tered-Cubic Austenite—M a preferred orientation is found in a rolled and hardened steel, it is first appropriate to consider what texture existed in the austenite as a result of the rolling but prior to the transformation to martensite. The changes taking place as a result of the austenite-martensite transformation are then considered. In view of the instability of austenite in 4340 steel at low temperatures, no direct determination of the austenite texture was made. However, an estimate of the texture for austenite in 4340 steel may be made by considering the textures found for other face-centered-cubic metals. Barrett' has reviewed the rolling textures for many materials. The most common orientation in face-centered-cubic metals has the (110) planes parallel to the rolling plane and the [112] directions parallel to the rolling direction, or (110) [112]. Other orientations found are (112) [111], as well as (100) [001], (110) [001], and others. Beck and his co-workers, using quantitative pole figures, report that (123) [121],3 later corrected to (123) [412],4 better describes the ideal orientation. smallman5 reported that the ideal preferred orientation for high-purity face-centered-cubic metals is (123) [121], but that there is a transition to (110) [112] as solid solution elements are added. The latter texture tends to occur more readily at lower temperatures. This transition between the two textures was explained by differences in the slip characteristics with concentration or temperature. More recently, Jones and Fell6 concluded that the (123) [412] texture for face-centered-cubic metals could equally well be represented by a mixture of (110) [112] and (112) [111] textures, and hence it had no physical reality. From the above results it can be seen that there is no agreement on the "ideal" texture for fcc metals and, hence, no firm basis for assuming a texture for austenite in 4340 steel. Therefore, the orientations (110) [112], (123) [412], and (112) [111] have been considered in the following.* *The (123) [4121 is identical to the (123) [121] rotated 90 deg. The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 limits to 2 milligrams per cubic meter (for dust containing a maximum of 5% quartz) the average respirable dust concentration to which individual miners may be exposed. Section 205 of the Act directs that an appropriate exposure formula for dusts with quartz content in excess of 5% be established. This formula, entered in F. R. Document 70-12351 filed September 16, 1970, is 10 milligrams per cubic meter divided by % quartz. Thus, the total respirable dust exposure permitted limits the quartz to a maximum of 100 micrograms. For example, if % quartz is 5%, 10 mg/5 = 2 milligrams, and (.05) (2 mg) = 100 micrograms. Similarly, if % quartz is 10%, 10/10 = 1, and (.10) (1 mg) = 100 micrograms, etc. If the % quartz is less than 5%, the 2 mg/M3 limit prevails.

"Niobium aluminides were directly synthesized by a sodiothermic reduction process of NbC15 - AlCb which was dispersed into LiCl - KCl - NaCl - CaCb melts. The melt supplied a homogenous reaction medium which was substantially beneficial to the co-reduction of Nb and Al to form niobium aluminides in situ. The reduction was performed at 500°C for 4 hours. The products were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The corresponding results indicated that niobium aluminides powders were successfully synthesized.1. IntroductionNiobium aluminides have received considerable attention as high-temperature structural materials, due to their high melting points, relatively low density, high strength, excellent oxidation and creep resistance [1-4]. Figure 1 shows that there are three intermetallic compounds in the Nb - Al binary [5], which includes Nb3Al (A15 structure, Cr3Si type), Nb2Al (D8b structure, cr-CrFe type) and NbAb (D022 structure, TiAb type). These niobium aluminides have been used in turbine blades or in stationary gas turbines [6-8]. However, despite their attractive features, the ir applications are still limited by the long and costly fabrication process [9, 10].Niobium aluminides were industrially fabricated by the mechanically alloyed process [11-13]. Traditionally, niobium is extracted from Nb2O 5 or K2NbF7 by a metallothermic reduction process while aluminum is produced by the Hall-Heroult process of Ah03 electrolysis. Based on the extraction of Nb and Al, respectively, niobium aluminides is synthesized by a mechanical powder alloying process. The present process for making niobium aluminides requires a set of complicated equipment, has high production cost and time consuming [14, 15].The purpose of this work is to present the simple, economic and direct synthesis of niobium aluminides powders utilizing a sodiothermic reduction from NbC15 - Al Cb dispersed into molten salts."

For the majority of open pit precious metal mines in the western United States, grade control practices have evolved as a direct result of the variable geology of the ore body and the lack of a clear visual or geologic distinction between ore and waste material. These practices often include the extensive use of buffer or choke blasting, in an attempt to minimize lateral movement of the muckpile. The Mackay School of Mines is conducting ongoing research, which aims to develop a practical method of measuring the movement of discrete “targets” placed within the body of the blast. The movement experienced by these targets can then be used to interpolate the movement of the blast as a whole. Typically, the boundaries between different material types are known as digging limits or polygons and are marked using colored flagging on the muckpile. If material movement can be measured using targets placed in the blast, these digging limits can be altered to reflect the blast-induced rock movement, reducing dilution and improving value recovery.

"Filter cloth in the mining industry is an ambiguous title asthis suggests filter cloth use from underground ventilation to the refining processes. The time allowed for this paper would be better served in con-centrating on vacuum filters common to all mine mills and to offer some simple guide lines to the mill metallurgists in the choice of filter cloth for this type of filter.The requirement of the filter cloth is to separate solids from liquids under a vacuum head by forming a permeable layer of solids or cake, through which liquids can flow until the panel or disc sector leave the slurry tank and to continue to pass residual moisture from the cake formed during the cake drying cycle, and to discharge the cake on air-blow so that the cycle can be repeated.Whilst the mill metallurgist should not be expected to under¬stand all aspects of filter cloth manufacturer, it is however, advantageous for him to understand a little of the textile language associated with filter cloth for his own protection against ""trial-and-error"" methods, which are both time consuming and costly.If improvements are to be made over existing filter cloth in use an examination of the limiting factors of the cloth used should be made and the major causes for removal determined, e.g. cloth blinding, high moisture in cake, poor cake discharge on air blow, mechanical damage to cloth.As each of the limiting factors mentioned has a bearing on the choice of fibre used, the yarn type and weave of a suitable cloth, an under-standing of these points will assist the mill metallurgist in avoiding repetitive trials offering little degree of success."

"Fe-Ga alloys have a large low-field magnetostriction and these alloys are attractive candidates in energy conversion and harvesting applications. Small additions of W also increase the magnetostriction of Fe. In this paper changes in magnetostriction by W substitution for Ga in various Fe-x at.% Ga alloys are presented. Fe-Ga-W single crystals were grown using vertical Bridgman Growth technique. [001]-orientated single crystal samples were prepared with faces within 1 degree off <100> orientation. The samples were annealed at 1150 °C in the alpha-phase region and water quenched. The magnetostriction coefficient (3/2)A-100 measurements were made on these Fe-Ga-W single crystals. The result on the effects of W substitution and annealing on the magnetostrictive behavior of these alloys are discussed.*Support of this work by NSF-DMR under the award DMR-0854166 is gratefully acknowledged.IntroductionMagnetostrictive materials changes their dimension exhibit reversible strains and changes in elastic properties in the presence of an applied magnetic field or the reciprocal effect of changes in the magnetic properties with the application of stress [IJ and are very important in sensor, actuator device, linear motor, magnetomechanical devices, microelectro- mechanical devices, active vibration dampening devices application areas. The discovery of an order of magnitude enhancement in the magnetostriction of Fe with Ga addition coupled with low saturation magnetic fields, and excellent mechanical properties opened up the possibility of obtaining larger magnetostriction values in other low-cost ductile a-Fe phase based alloys with alloying additives that are less expensive than rareearths such as Tb and Dy [2·4l_ The magnetostriction values observed in Fe-Ga single crystals are sensitive to thermal history and composition. The formation of second short range ordering phases and local defects inside crystal structure can also cause a dramatic change to this alloy's magnetostriction behavior [5-9l_"

"Data from the South Fork Pit Area of the Bullmoose deposit in northeastern British Columbia are used to demonstrate the usefulness of microcomputers to the on-site geologist. The technique utilizes a series of digital surf aces in the form of a network of points to define various geologic parameters such as seam positions, topography and coal quality characteristics. Manual digitizing, kriging and combinations of these techniques are used to calculate these digital surfaces, the best method depending upon the type and quality of the data in question. Digital surfaces, each modelling a specific feature when combined and manipulated with the computer form a powerful tool, the deposit model. The resultant model, containing all the surfaces, is used to examine seam and inter-seam thicknesses, deposit volumetrics, seam quality characteristics and the adequacy of sampling.IntroductionCoal deposit modelling using computer-based techniques has become routine. However, a geologist working in the field, without access to mainframe or minicomputer, ha s considerable difficulty implementing these procedures. However, microcomputers, which are portable and inexpensive can handle exploration data, perform various geological analyses, and produce deposit models virtually at the same time as the data is being collected. For the on-site geologist this means that quick access to the results of such modelling could point out inadequacies in deposit definition and trends in coal quality deserving investigation."

"In a very real sense, Butte, MT is where the copper came from that won two world wars. The price for that unrestricted mining and smelting of copper came due in 1983 when Butte was declared a Superfund site.One of the most complex remnants of this mining history is the Parrot Tailings site. The Parrot smelter operated from 1881 to 1910, moving Upper Silver Bow Creek to the south and depositing approximately 283,000 m3 (370,000 cu yd) of waste material adjacent to Upper Silver Bow Creek. Additional mixed waste from other processing sites deposited below the Parrot tailings at the Northside Tailings, Diggings East and Blacktail Creek Berm total approximately 171,000 m3 (224,000 cu yd) of contaminated material. As part of the Superfund remedy, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed leaving all these wastes in place. This proposal prompted a detailed criticism by several geoscientists familiar with the site. The EPA’s 2006 Record of Decision (ROD) did in fact leave these wastes in place, which set the stage for a series of studies that continue to refine how best to protect extensive completed Superfund Remediation downstream of Upper Silver Bow Creek. History of the Parrott Mine and tailingsPlacer gold was discovered in Silver Bow Creek, the headwaters of the Clark Fork River only a few miles from the Continental Divide in 1864. This discovery led to a stampede of placer and lode claims. One of the first lode claims located was the Parrot lode, located in the fall of 1864. Progress for developing a mine at the Parrott was slow, and it was not until 1876 that one of the original locators encountered a rich vein of chalcocite. Butte had its first copper mine.The Parrott Mine was patented in 1879 and by 1881 the Parrot, having lost a “t”, concentrator and smelter were built. The smelter and concentrator were an immediate success with a considerable market for processing the district’s rich copper ore. In 1885, the employees of the Parrot smelter bought the Butte Reduction Works, another smelter. In 1885, dams were built on Silver Bow Creek to contain various tailings and related processing byproducts (Fig. 1).By 1890, the various smelters in Butte rendered Butte’s air quality as suffocating (Fig. 2). An 1889 funeral procession was rumored to have gotten lost in the thick smelter smoke and somehow ended up at the Centennial Brewery. A city ordinance was passed late in 1890 in an attempt to control smoke. The Parrot smelter employed approximately 500 men by 1890. Through the 1890s, the tailings produced grew from approximately 91 t/d (100 stpd) to more than 181 t/d (200 stpd). Copper values in the tailings were initially as high as 4 percent, but as the processing improved that was reduced to 1.5 percent."

Sub-microscopic gold grains in disseminated gold deposits in Nevada are often directly associated with the clay mineral illite. Delineation of gold ore-zones can be improved by accurate characterization of the associated illite varieties or polytypes. X-ray diffraction studies of clay minerals from several disseminated gold deposits demonstrate that illite polytypes reflect lateral and vertical zonation around the ore bodies. Polytypes act as geothermometers indicating temperatures of ore deposition and proximity to hypogene and supergene fluids. Visible/near infrared spectral measurements using a field-portable reflectance spectrometer provide a reconnaissance technique for mapping the in-situ distribution of illites. Changes in the visible/near-infrared reflectance spectra are observed as illites progress from the lower temperature, less ordered 1 M variety to the higher temperature 2M type. "In mid-1986, a world-class mining enterprise was created in Highland Valley, British Columbia, bringing together the copper mining operations of Lomex and Cominco . In 1988, Highmont joined the new partnership.Highland Valley Copper is the largest copper mine in North America in terms of both tonnage mined and tonnage milled, and it is one of the largest in the world. Due to its relatively low ore grade its production of copper in concentrate ranks about ninth in the Western World.The current eighteen year mine plan is based on ore reserves of 761 million tonnes. The daily milling rate is 133 000 tonnes. At the end of mine life, a total area of approximately 6500 hectares will have been disturbed. At this time, vegetation has been established on about 600 hectares and while work will be done during the operating years, it will not be until the end of mine life, about 2008, that the last half of the land can be reclaimed and revegetated.Once final reclamation has been accomplished, Highland Valley Copper will have completed its "" temporary use of the land"". In the meantime, about 1250people have had employment for about 50 000 man years, at wages ranking among the best in Canada.IntroductionTo provide and sustain our way of life, we need steel, copper, aluminum, zinc and many other minerals.To sustain mining, we must have adequate ore reserves and replacement of reserves as they are mined. Each year the search becomes more difficult as more of the Earth&apos;s surface is investigated and depo sits are mined. This calls for aggressive and sustained efforts.In British Columbia, past and present mining activities have disturbed less than one-tenth of one per cent of the land.With today’s technology, mining operations can be substantially reclaimed and thus complete the cycle of ""A Temporary Use of the Land""."

The Rocky Mountain region is defined with some variations for different purposes or by different organizations. For oil and gas development, Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, northwestern New Mexico, and Utah are included in the order of their apparent importance. Portions of adjoining states, such as North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Arizona, Nevada, and Idaho, arc attributary to this region, but have little or no oil or gas production. Nebraska and New Mexico are considered separately (see pp. 412 and 415), and most of the discussion in this report will be confined to Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming. Utah has produced about 200,000 bbl. of oil from the San Juan and Virgin fields, which are isolated and shut in at present. The Clay Basin field in northeastern Utah produces natural gas and distillate, and the Farnham field in central Utah produces carbon dioxide gas. Other Utah areas of some interest are listed in Table I. The Cedar Creek (Baker-Glendive) field in southeastern Montana extends into North Dakota, but is listed under Montana. The other states are in the main wildcat areas, and exploration in 1944 was at a minimum. However, geological and geophysical parties are reviewing them for further testing. Oil production in Colorado, Montana and Wyoming was 459,000 bbl. more than in 1943. Increases of 713,000 bbl. in Colarado and 731,000 bbl. in Montana offset a loss of 985,000 bbl. in Wyoming. This was the first decline in Wyoming since 1938. Field production figures and state totals are given in Table I. Total drilling activities in these three states and Utah increased from 687 wells making 1,442,511 ft. of hole in 1943 to 916 wells making 2,245,803 it. in 1944. Wildcat drilling increased from 163 wells making 331,193 ft. of hole in 1943 to 171 wells making 389,144 it. in 1944. These figures include all drilling wells making footage, not starts or completions, and represent an all-time high in drilling. The year 1944 witnessed the greatest concentration of seismograph activity that the region has had. The Rocky Mountain Oil Scouts Association reported that in 1943, the previous peak year, 91 crew months of work were performed; in 1944, the time was 254 crew months. About 67 per cent of the work was in Wyoming, 18 per cent in Montana, and 12 per cent in Colorado. Twenty-three blocks totaling 400,000 acres were reported assembled in Colorado, and 161 blocks totaling 4,000,000 acres in Wyoming. Information about other states was not given. Fourteen unit agreements were approved by the Department of the Interior, as compared with 13 in 1943. The 1944 agreements were all in Wyoming.
