Stability problems with dam spillways on existing landslides and appropriate mitigation measures to remedy them are ongoing concerns for geotechnical engineers. The first successful application of drilled piers as stabilizing structures under the spillway was at the Trinity Dam in Sicily, Italy. ?Underpinning? was considered as an alternative to spillway relocation during the Alpaslan 2 embankment dam design in eastern Turkey. Based on the available literature the first application of drilled piers to stabilize a spillway chute in the U.S. was at the Ralston Dam in Colorado. Ralston Dam, which is a 175-foot-high zoned fill dam located 15 miles northwest of downtown Denver, was built in the late 1930s. The concrete spillway for the dam was built on the Pierre Shale Formation in the left abutment. Since reservoir operations began, mass movements have occurred downstream of the chute area. These movements have required periodic spillway maintenance. After the occurrence of recent movements and because of high piezometeric levels, URS was contracted by Denver Water to develop a more permanent solution by the installation and monitoring of additional instrumentation, analysis of slope stabilizing measures, design, repair, and reconstruction of the distressed section of the spillway chute. With state of the art modifications that include: 1) a stabilizing berm with a toe trench that improves the global stability; 2) seepage prevention and control measures that prevent the infiltration of water; and 3) the structural support of the replaced chute section with drilled piers and reinforced concrete the probability of future displacements or other problems have been reduced for the Ralston Dam Spillway.

Building Information Modeling is a prevailing methodology in the building industry and half (by length) of the world's shield tunnels are in Japan. Accordingly, for shield tunnels from 2005 to 2007, we developed a product model called IFC-ShieldTunnel, which is based on Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), in order to meet the future demand for such a product model. IFC-ShieldTunnel was developed by adding new elements that are specific to shield tunnels and that are not included in the original IFC. The added elements include shafts, segments (A, B, and K types), waterproofing elements, segment joint elements, and ring joint elements. Furthermore, soil layers and void elements were created. Recently, we updated the product model by re-organizing the entities and correcting errors. We deployed the updated IFCShieldTunnel model in the construction of an actual shield tunnel in Tokyo for about a year from August 2010 in order to check its feasibility. In the verification process, first, segments were modeled using Autodesk Revit Structure 2011 and property data were assigned to each segment element. Next, a mapping between the original attributes of the entities of IFC and properties of IFC-ShieldTunnel segments was developed. Using this mapping and IFC?s IfcBuildingElementProxy function, we were able to convert the IFC data from Revit Structure 2011 to IFC-ShieldTunnel automatically. Segment data were also converted from Revit Structure to Google SketchUp by IFC-ShieldTunnel. Furthermore, the construction scheduling and cost data were converted from Revit Structure to EXCEL for 4D and 5D analyses of construction. We interviewed engineers who used IFC-ShieldTunnel and received positive comments about the utilization of the product model. Overall, our test demonstrated the feasibility of IFC-ShieldTunnel. In future work, we plan to apply IFC-ShieldTunnel to more projects and test its practicality.

In this paper a method is presented for estimating the specifications of sandstone-type uranium deposits which will be the minimum that can meet a company's economic requirements for investment. The method interpolates and extrapolates from available cost data for typical mines to provide the costs for a wide range of possible deposits. The range of deposits achieving the company's required discounted cash flow rate of return on investment at an estimated uranium oxide selling price is then calculated, thus giving the complete range of deposits which meet the minimum required specifications. Prospects are then evaluated by comparison with these minimum requirements.

East Side Access (ESA) will extend Long Island Rail Road into midtown Manhattan via 11 km of tunnels, a new terminal station and associated rail support facilities. The hard-rock tunneling in Manhattan will traverse under Park Avenue and some of the most historically and commercially significant real estate in the world. The soft-ground tunneling in Queens will traverse beneath Amtrak’s Sunnyside Yard and the Harold Inter locking, the busiest rail interlocking in North America. This paper details ESA’s program-wide geo-instrumentation monitoring system for obtaining, processing and presenting all geotechnical monitoring data. Data streams will be real-time, such as from automated total stations, and manually read, such as from optical survey instruments and handheld data loggers. All data will be input into a web-based Geo-Instrumentation Data Management System, which will be accessible to project stake holders via ESA’s intranet or via the Internet using remote access controls.

Based on information supplied by South African collieries to the Coal Mining Laboratory of the Chamber of Mines since 1978, the paper outlines the general performance of the continuous miners used and gives the results more-detailed studies of the cutting, loading, and transportation processes. On average, the continuous miners produced coal at a rate of 76 t per operating hour, which, at an average machine availability of 67 per cent, resulted in a production of 51 t per total hour. The cutting rates varied between and 250 t/h but, owing to machine and system inefficiencies, the overall production rate varied between 92 and 48 It is concluded that, if the collieries concentrated on improving their machine utilization procedures and operating practices, they could increase the overall production from their continuous-miner sections.

On scheduled commissioning and effective operation of a solvent extraction circuit relies on getting the design of both the core contact equipment and the peripheral plant right. Experience has shown that poor performance of new plants is frequently a result of ?utility? systems that do not match the requirements of the circuit, rather than the mass transfer equipment itself. Both the operator/owner and designer need to understand the ?complete requirements? for the circuit to get the balance of the design right. This paper reviews generic issues, frequently overlooked or altered during cost-cutting exercises, which have a significant impact on plant performance.

The Guymard mine in Orange County, N. Y., is reported to have been discovered in 1862 and mined until 1876, producing 10,000 tons of lead and zinc ore. The property was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in 1948. Development work was done by the Bureau in April and May 1949 and March 1950. During these two periods four drill holes totaling 2,090 feet were completed. The mineralized sections of the core were sampled and assayed.

Indiscriminate surface disposal of coal waste in New South Wales has created a serious fire hazard and increased air pollution.A survey of numerous dumps, as well as particular investigations of one badly-constructed dump, showed that factors conducive to ignition and propagation of fires in waste dumps were high contents of combustible material (coal, pyrite, wood. paper. grease), size segregation leading to ready movement of air and moisture shape of the dump (e.g. protruding sections or porous junctions), high ambient air temperatures, bush fires, and even deliberate lighting.Control methods applied in the past tended to be haphazard and unsuccessful. Under Australian conditions the technique recommended for control of existing dump fires, based on experimental work, is to spray the dump with a chemical fire retardant (e.g. a 2 per cent solution of sodium tetra borate and ammonium phosphate), to cover the dump with a suitable soil, and to seal the surface with a I per cent solution of aluminium sulphate or sodium metasilicate. The recommended method of dump construction to prevent fires is to level and seal the site, to construct a firebreak around the dump area, and to build a rectangular dump with minimum size segregation and compacted surfaces.

A method for the interpretation of temperature curves recorded in gas producing wells is described. One essen-tial feature of the method is a simple graphical construction which conveniently reflects the amount of gas flowing from a given producing formation. This method, applied in conjunction with the Induction Log and radioactivity logs, is valuable to determine the points of entry of gas and to estimate the over-all thickness of the producing zones and their respective contributions to the total production. The method in particular is helpful in evaluating the effect of fracturing operations. An outstanding result of the application of the method is to bring to the light the relative importance of sand-shale interfaces in the production of gas. The paper is illustrated with field examp1es. INTRODUCTION The electrical logging tools involving conventional systems are not applied in wells which do not contain water base mud (empty holes, or wells filled with oil base mud), because of the absence of electrical connection between the electrodes and the surrounding formations. It is, therefore, common practice in this case to use other methods which do not require the presence of a conductive fluid in the borehole: resistivity log with scratcher electrodes, Induction Log, radioactivity logs, temperature log. . . . Such conditions are encountered in some regions, as the San Juan Basin, N. Mex., where a technique of drilling gas wells, using gas as a drilling fluid, has been introduced in the last two years. By the middle of 1953, an appropriate method for the logging of these wells was devised on the basis of field tests and of theoretical studies. It is the purpose of the present paper to give a description of this method. In these wells the logging operations are performed during the process of gas production, so that the temperatures in the boreholes are strongly affected by the cooling due to the expansion of the gas. On the other hand, a special thermometer, with a high sensivity and a short time constant, has been recently made available, which has enabled much more detailed and accurate recordings of the borehole temperatures than with the conventional instruments. As a result of these two circumstances, the temperature log constitutes the essential element of the method, in making possible the detection of the gas producing zones, the definition of their boundaries, and the estimation of the respective contributions of each separate zone to the total production. The method also involves the radioactivity and Induction Logs, as auxiliary documents. These logs in the present instance are helpful in the determination of the reservoirs. However, the information they give in this respect is limited. This comes from the fact that, due to the absence of the MicroLog and/or MicroLaterolog and of the SP log, the estimation of formation factors and connate water salinities is somewhat conjectural. Furthermore, little help is obtained from the Neutron log for the evaluation of porosity and of formation factor because the variations of gas saturation affect the Neutron log in a way similar to the variations of porosity. The New Pacific Northwest Baseball Park, now known as Safeco Field, is located directly south of the Kingdome in Seattle, Washington, and will be the new home of the Seattle Mariners baseball team. The location of the ball field is shown on Figure 1, Vicinity Map. The seating capacity is 45,600, and outfield distances are 331 feet in left, 405 feet in center, and 326 feet in right field. The overall dimensions of the stadium are 680 by 800 feet. It is bordered on the east by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad main line. A unique aspect of this ballpark is the retractable roof with a north-south span length of 660 feet. The roof consists of three separate sections that roll on elevated rails running east-west on the north and south sides of the stadium. The soil conditions consisted of near-surface fill underlain with alluvial and Estuarine deposits to depths of 60 to 80 feet. The bearing soils consisted of very dense, glacially overridden deposits. Groundwater is 4 to 7 feet below the ground surface, and the alluvial deposits are subject to liquefaction during a strong motion earthquake.

This paper presents and discusses some of the computer models developed and currently used at the Earth Mechanics Institute (EMI) of the Colorado School of Mines (CSM). These include the performance models for full and partial face machines. Examples of input and output of these models will be illustrated for typical mining operations by using machines such as Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM), Continuous Miners (CM), Marietta borer miners and longwall drum shearers. The general approach to modeling and the available models are discussed and some examples of these models are presented. The comparison between the estimated and achieved performance, as well as the degree of improvement in the performance due to balancing and modification in cutterhead design are also discussed.

T HE OPEN FORUM on this subject called by Mr. Hoover at the recent meeting of the Institute' brought out a large number of very able papers, and a very full discussion of all the problems involved. The criticisms of the bituminous industry were: 1. That it was over-developed with the possible output nearly 50 per cent. in excess of the present requirements; that during the summer there were plenty of cars and no orders, and during the winter there were plenty of orders but no cars. 2. That the mines were not properly developed from an engineering standpoint, and that the recovery of the coal varies from 50 per cent. to 95 per cent. 3. That this industry, employing over 600,000 men, could, if running full time, release 100,000 men for other work. 4. That the studies made by the engineers of the Fuel Administration showed that the cost of production increased with a loss of time and that with a 50 per cent. operation the increase in cost was about 40 per cent.

"Froth flotation has a long history of success for the recovery and concentration of a wide variety of minerals of commercial interest. Both the art and science of flotation have progressed greatly, and as our knowledge has increased so has our ability to improve mineral separations and recoveries.One area of interest in recent years has been the flotation of refractory gold ores to recover the goldbearing sulfides. In many instances, the use of conventional air flotation to concentrate these values has achieved only limited success. However, as a result of intensive research, Newmont Mining has expanded the boundaries of flotation, and it can now be used to successfully treat many gold-bearing sulfide ores as well as platinum and palladium ores. This has been achieved through the use of the patented N2TEC technology, which utilizes nitrogen as an inert gas in the flotation process."

"The cemented coal gangue-fly ash backfill technique (CGFB) has commonly been used to control subsidence damage caused by underground coal mining. This paper discusses the CGFB backfilling process used at the Xin-Yang coal mine, Shanxi Province, China. A general description of the components of the CGFB are provided. The reaction of the strata to the backfilling process is simulated with a scaled physical model based on the Xin-Yang conditions and verified with subsidence points on the surface. With the help of the cemented filling materials, the CGFB produces only a slight bend to the overburden roof strata over the longwall panel. Physical models were constructed at the China University of Mining and Technology, Beijing, to simulate actual conditions. The modeling results show minor fracture distribution in the overlying strata and lower abutment pressure development within the backfilling area. The effectiveness of the CGFB technique is verified by a reduction in the vertical surface subsidence measured above the backfilled area.INTRODUCTIONUnderground longwall mining is the most efficient underground means to recover coal resources and is used widely in China, the US, Australia, and Europe. However, this type of mining has introduced some serious environmental impacts. Perhaps the most significant environmental issues are the surface and groundwater impacts associated with the formation of the subsidence basin (Bell and Donnelly, 2006). Backfill technology has been used for years to mitigate subsidence impact. Simply speaking, the backfilling technique places filling materials into the void left from the extraction of coal. When this material is placed within the gob, it is capable of partially supporting the overburden until a new equilibrium is reached. Essentially, the backfill material inhibits crack development and expansion caused by the strata movement and mitigates damaging ground deformations.The cemented gangue-fly ash backfill (CGFB) is one type of novel backfill technology, consisting of cement, coal gangue, fly ash, water, and additives in varying concentrations. The CGFB is mixed on the surface, pumped underground through a pipeline as a slurry, and placed in the void behind the longwall shield under the protection of specially designed hydraulic supports."

Developments of well-surveying instruments, coring .and core orientation, were in an advanced state when drilling for oil began—these developments actually originated with the mining industry.' Surveying of oil wells was not generally used in the United States until Alexander Anderson2 disclosed that the majority of wells drilled with rotary tools were crooked, with average horizontal drifts of about 516 ft. for holes 5000 ft. deep and about 793 ft. for holes 6000 ft. deep. This disclosure brought about the development of many additional instruments for surveying oil wells during the progress of drilling and after their completion. Surveying of boreholes, during the process of drilling at regular depth intervals, became a standard practice in the petroleum industry. Some producing states even established laws making check surveys mandatory, during drilling and under certain conditions also after completion. The surveying of boreholes also brought about changes and improvements in drilling practices. It provides information for the guidance of the hole while drilling, and for plotting the course as the work progresses, enabling the driller to take corrective measures immediately and with the least expense. The reasons for drilling straight holes are too well recognized to warrant any full discussion of them here. Straight holes are less costly to drill, because they reach the object on the shortest course. Table I shows the horizontal drift and loss in vertical depth for various angles of inclination. It is not surprising, therefore that many drilling contracts for oil wells today limit the drilling contractor to a maximum inclination off the vertical of 2° or 3O. In the mining industry the reasons for drilling straight holes are still more serious. A crooked hole may miss an ore body underground or provide incorrect information regarding an ore body. Columbium metal was electrorefined in a fused - salt electrolyte . Excellent results were obtained in lowering the impurity content in a 94 - percent columbium anode feed material to produce a 99.8- percent - pure metal . The reductions of the major impurities follow : Oxygen from 19,800 to 500 ppm , carbon from 9,700 to 25 ppm , iron from 9,200 to 630 ppm , nitrogen from 2,100 to 90 ppm , and silicon from 750 ppm to not detected . Columbium with a purity of 99.9 percent was produced from 99.5- and 99.8 - percent grades of columbium. The investigation was devoted to the evaluation of a fused - fluoride - salt electrolyte ( KF - NaF- K₂ CbF, ) for electrorefining columbium. The effects of the columbium concentration and the voltage upon the product's purity were investigated . The effect on the cathode current efficiency of ampere - hours of deposition and the formation of a dual valence state of the columbium was also investigated .
