The Greenwich Collieries Co. is a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Mines Corporation, and a wholly owned subsidiary of the PP&L Co. which serves the northeastern portion of Pa. PP&L annually consumes about 11 million tons of coal per year and is the largest consumer of both bituminous and anthracite coal on the eastern seaboard. Development work for Greenwich started in 1969. The coarse coal plant was constructed in 1970, with the raw fines bypassed. This worked very well for our requirements at that time; however, the Greenwich mining plans were extensively changed, longwall mining units were installed and low coal was encountered, resulting in dirtier coal, a finer coal and an ever increasing ash in the shipped product. All this demanded a more efficient ash removal process for the fine coal fraction. In 1971, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources and the Federal Environmental Protection Agency were pushing for the now stringent sulphur emission limits at our power plants. The Greenwich Mine coal reserves contained large quantities of 3.5 to 4% sulphur along with some low sulphur reserves. It was, therefore, essential that any new plant have the capability of efficient sulphur removal to meet the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources and the Federal Environmental Protection Agency required limits. To meet these limits our design would have to be capable of producing a product of 2.0% sulphur or less.

SOME notes on the works of the Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Company of Australia will no doubt be of interest to members of the Institute, more especially as much of the work is new to Australasia. As many of the members who may read this paper have not been in a position to visit works of this kind, and are consequently not thoroughly acquainted with all the operations carried on, the author has taken the liberty, in some cases, to enter into explanation which would otherwise be unnecessary. The works are situated at Port Kembla (New South Wales), about fifty miles south of Sydney, and are approachable both by rail and water. The Government has recently built a low-level jetty upwards of five hundred feet long, and intends installing at an early date an electrically operated portable crane to facilitate the handling of material to and from the boats. This will mean: a considerable reduction in the length of time that boats are laid up at the jetty. There are also under construction two breakwaters, which, when complete, will materially assist shipping operation...

"Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport underwent a $1.2 billion dollar expansion project centered on the construction of the new Maynard H. Jackson International Terminal. Passenger access between the new International Terminal and the domestic airport facilities is primarily via underground Automated People Mover (APM) trains. Prior to this expansion, the APM tunnel terminated beneath Concourse E, which previously served all international flights. The new International Terminal is located approximately ½-mile from the previous terminus of the APM tunnel.A paper describing the general approach to excavation support for construction of the entire APM tunnel extension from under Concourse E to the new International Terminal was published by two of the authors (Hurley and NeSmith, 2014). One of the features of note of the approach involved the intersection of the proposed new alignment of the APM tunnel extension under Concourse E with the old terminus. Specifically, the new tunnel extension conflicted with the location of the existing Auger Pressure Grouted (APG) piles supporting four columns in Concourse E. This paper presents design and installation details of the micropile underpinning approach used to support the existing columns to allow for the proposed excavation including the cutting and removal of the existing APG piles, while allowing Concourse E to remain in service during construction.PROJECT DETAILSGeneralThe construction of the APM extension required an excavation support system for a 450-ft long, 55-ft deep excavation across Taxiway Dixie and a 900-ft long, 30-ft deep excavation beneath the basement of existing Concourse E. The excavation under Concourse E required both excavation support and support of the existing columns over the proposed excavation zone. A general overview of the work area is shown on Figure 1."

Development on the North Kalgurli mine has established a major penetration of ore into calc schist. This is controlled by a system of east-dipping strike faults. Previously, most calc schist ore bodies were regarded as being confined to the quartz dolerite greenstonecak schist contact environment.INTRODUCTIONOne of the most interesting and economically important developments which has taken place in the Kalgoorlie Field over the past 20 years is the proved penetration of ore into calc schist on the North Kalgurli Mine. This is quite extensive, both laterally and in depth, and has occasioned some modification of geological thought in the search for additional ore sources.Ore has been mined in calc schist almost since the first major gold discoveries were made and the principal features of the various types of deposit are well covered in the literature of the field. However, occurrences in calc schist have not been characterised by the same degree of continuity or frequency as the innumerable lode formations in the more favourable quartz dolerite, and there has been a tendency to regard them as isolated and discontinuous ore bearing structures, occurring only under very special conditions.It is not intended to describe the whole range of calc schist ore occurrences but only major controlling structures, whose penetration therein has been definitely established and in which an appreciable amount of ore has been and is still being found. It is considered that similar structures may present a major objective for future exploratory work in other parts of the field.

This paper presents a vision system capable of providing an accurate estimate for the volume of stockpiles using 2D images. By imaging a stockpile from multiple viewpoints with a two-camera system, a 3D point cloud of known scale is generated using image-based 3D reconstructions. With a small amount of user interaction, the points that correspond to the surface of the stockpile are extracted and used to measure the volume. The hardware required for the two-camera system is light enough to be carried by a small unmanned aircraft and is a cheaper alternative to LiDAR while still being competitive in terms of accuracy. When testing the volume measurement algorithm on a stockpile of known volume, the measured output was found to have less than a 3% error from the ground truth.

To investigate mine ventilation problems which do not lend themselves to conventional anemometer and smoke study techniques by use of SF6 (sulfur hexafluoride) tracer gas. Approach SF6 tracer gas is released in-to the air at a given mine location. By collecting air samples at various other locations and analyzing these samples for SF6, the amount of air traveling from the release location to each sampling location can be quantitatively determined. Travel time between these locations can also be deter-mined. How It Works SF6 is ideal as a mine tracer gas. It is safe, odorless, chemically and thermally stable, and it generally has no background concentration. Furthermore, it is instrument detectable at concentrations as low as 10 parts per trillion. The SF6 is generally released from a pressurized lecture bottle, and air samples are taken in syringes or evacuated bottles. During the past several years, SF6 tracer gas has been employed to study a wide variety of mine ventilation problems such as: recirculation of return air into In-take airways, air leakage from adjacent mines and gob areas, air transit times through stoped areas, airflow patterns during a mine fire, leakage of gases from an underground oil shale retort into mine workings, face area ventilation patterns, methane flows in metal/nonmetal mines following a methane out-burst, and many other problem areas. Examples of some recent uses of SF6 follow.

"During the leaching of anodic slimes, tellurium dissolves into the leach liquor together with copper and must be removed before the solution is sent to liberator cells for copper recovery. Prior to the installation of autoclaves, tellurium was precipitated using raw slimes that caused a recirculation of tellurium in the leaching circuit. After autoclaves were installed the old leach tanks were converted into tellurium reactors utilizing copper chips, steam and agitation to form a copper telluride precipitate. Tellurium levels of less than 10 rng/L are achieved in a timely manner.IntroductionThe electrolytic refining of copper consists of an electrolytic cell provided with an anode of impure copper, a cathode of substantially pure copper (starter sheet) and an electrolyte made of copper sulfate and sulfuric acid [1]. When a direct electrical current is passed between the anode and cathode inside the cell, the impure copper anode dissolves in the electrolyte and pure copper is plated onto the cathode. During this operation, many of the impurities are deposited on the bottom of the cell as an anodic slime residue composed of insoluble chemical compounds. Slimes are a major source of rare and precious metals in the copper industry [2-5],In the Amarillo Copper Refinery (ACR), the anodic copper slimes are sent to the Precious Metals department in order to extract and then refine the gold, silver, platinum and palladium from them. The remaining impurities, in the form of a soda slag or copper slag are sent to the Hayden smelter for further processing. Copper telluride is sent to the Selenium/Tellurium department inside the plant for selenium and tellurium recovery. During the leaching process of the anodic slimes, copper, tellurium, and other metal species in the slimes are dissolved into leach liquor that cannot be returned to the tankhouse unless the tellurium concentration is below 10 mg/L."

Provide means for rapidly re-establishing ventilation control in metal mines after blasting, for emergency applications, and for routine temporary use. Approach Two quickly-installed, parachute-like stoppings have been developed and tested by the Bureau's Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center. How the Parachute Stopping Works The parachute stopping can be fastened to an existing anchor point, opened, and effectively block the air flow, in less than two minutes. Because the parachute stopping tends to be self-scaling, its performance is generally better than that of conventional fabric stopping. However, the periphery of the parachute stopping must be longer than the periphery of the mine opening, Figure 1 shows the parachute stopping deployed in a mine entry. To reduce leakage during routine use, the cloth at the periphery of the parachute stopping can be adjusted and then anchored at several points as necessary. This extra adjustment can also be done after the initial installation during mine rescue or mine recovery.

The research described in this Bureau of Minus report was conducted to improve the chromium-iron ratio of offgrade chromite. Two methods were used: (1) Iron was selectively reduced from chromite by carbothermic reduction in an electric-arc furnace, and (2) a mixture of carbon, chromite, and sometimes fluorspar was chlorinated to remove a substantial part of the iron. Chromite concentrate from the Mouat deposit in Montana and from northern California was used in the test work. Chromium-bearing slag and chromite that had been beneficiated by a roast-leach process were each smelted to produce high-carbon ferrochromium. Iron was selectively reduced in a laboratory-scale., electric-arc furnace. Carbon additions to the smelting charges varied from 40 to 100 percent of the stoichiometric requirement, and slag basicities were varied from 0.4 to 1.0 chromium-iron ratios of more than 4:1 were obtained with 89 percent recovery of chromium in a chromium-bearing slag.

A study has been made of the decarburization of low-carbon sheet steels at temperatures from 1100" to 1475°F in mixtures containing hydrogen, nitrogen, water vapor, and in some instances carbon monoxide. Decarburization occurs principally by the reaction C (in steel) + H20 = CO + H2 and follows a first-order rate law. The decarburization rate appreciably increases with an increase in temperature up to about 1325°F, but the increase in rate is small with fur- Use of a dry hydrogen atmosphere results in a relatively slow decarburization of steel and use of a wet hydrogen atmosphere results in relatively rapid decarburization. It is now generally recognized' that the reaction C (in steel) + H2O = H2 + CO [l] accounts for most of the decarburization that occurs in wet hydrogen-containing atmospheres. The present article is concerned with the decarburization of low-carbon sheet steel in H2-N2 atmospheres ther increase in temperature. The limiting rate of decarburization can be predicted from a knowledge of the solid solubility and diffusivity of carbon and this rate is approached as the water-vapor content of an atmosphere is increased. Hydrogen contents above about 8 pct are beneficial only in that they permit higher levels of water vapor to be used without oxidation of the steel. A buildup of CO in the atmosphere lowers the rate of decarburization. containing various amounts of water vapor and carbon monoxide. The effectiveness of these atmospheres and the influence of temperature on decarburization rate will be considered. EXPERIMENTAL WORK The chemical compositions of the three steels used in decarburization-rate studies are listed in Table I. Steel A was a commercially hot-rolled rimmed steel that was cold-reduced at the Laboratory to furnish specimens 0.025, 0.041, and 0.059 in. thick. The establishment and survival of different grass species and cultivars on various phytotechnic treatments at a limestone quarry was studied. The treatments applied were: a) bare soil, b) bentonite, c) bentonite-straw and d) asphalt-straw. According to the results, significant differences were found among species and cultivars, growing on different treatments as far as plant growth and survival are concerned. The seed germination was higher on bentonite -straw and asphaltic-straw than on bentonite but the plants survival were higher on bentonite. Lolium perenne had higher seed germination rate and better establishment than the other tested species at all treatments. However, the survival rate of Agropyron desertorum and of the cultivars palestina and chrysopigi of Dactylis glomerata was higher than of the other species.

The synthesis processing of Mg2Si or Mg2Si/MgO at lower temperature from the elemental magnesium alloy powder/chips and Si or SiO2 powder mixture was established via the repeated plastic working (RPW) based on Powder Metallurgy (P/M) process. RPW is much effective on the mechanical breakage of MgO surface films, which prevent from the solid-state reaction between Mg and Si powder. The solid-state synthesized Mg2Si particle of 200nm-2JIm is extremely fine, compared to that via the conventional casting process, causing the coarse one of 50-100um. This is because of not coarsening during the solid-state synthesis of Mg2Si. By using in-situ forming process of Mg2Si via RPW and pre-heating before hot working such as extrusion and forging, the magnesium composite material with Mg2Si or Mg2Si/MgO dispersions was developed in employing Si or SiO2 particles, respectively. For example, when employing AZ31 chips as raw materials of the matrix, it has low density of 1.85g/cm) and extremely superior mechanical properties, such as tensile strength over 350MPa with 5-10% elongation and Young's modulus of 47-50GPa, to the conventional Mg-Al-Zn alloys. The Mg composite alloy wires and pipes were produced via the hot extrusion process in the manufacturing plant, and also showed excellent mechanical properties.

"""Hazard"" is the general expression used by safety engineers to denote risk, or the danger to property or human beings from the contingencies peculiar to different industries. Where a business, family, or individual is subjected to possible financial loss from any particular hazard, it is customary and is considered good practice to insure for reimbursement of possible loss. Accordingly, we take out insurance for earthquakes, for fire, for accidents, etc., and are charged a different premium for each. The premium rate is based on our relative exposure to the hazard in comparison to the total loss to our particular class of business in our geographical location over a given period.Insurance, then, must be considered as the experience of a group rather than of an individual, and any individual may be fortunate or unfortunate over stated periods. Through the law of averages, the probability of loss because of exposure to hazard is becoming more accurately measured as experience is accumulated and data are analyzed.Lion human life came to have a financial value in the eyes of the law, and employers were held liable for losses through accidents to employees while on duty, insurance companies began to underwrite the accident risks of the different employers and divided them into classes based on the amount of risk involved. Premiums for compensation insurance are based on relative exposure, which is measured by pay roll. The premium is rated in proportion to the severity of losses established by statistical studies.' With new lightweight designs, spirals have become standard equipment in coal preparation plants worldwide. To their credit, spirals typically show very low coal losses to the refuse stream under most operating conditions. However, spirals do tend to separate at cut points in excess of 1.80 S.G. Attempts to obtain lower cut points have typically resulted in coal losses to middlings. Middlings retreatment with secondary spirals is therefore becoming common place. Other forms of retreatment with water-only cyclones, hydrosizers, and recirculation have been attempted with some success. This paper reports on a novel (Patent Applied For) approach to retreating spiral middlings m a heavy-media-cyclone circuit.

A method is presented that provides a mathematical description of capillary pressure curves and, probably, of differences in pore geometry of samples. The technique is based on the observation that the location and shape of a capillary pressure curve reflect characteristics of the pore structure of the sample. INTRODUCTION It has been noted1-5 that the observed differences in shape and location of capillary pressure curves reflect some basic properties regarding the pore geometry of the samples. For example, according to basic concepts of capillarity, the following statements can be made regarding the location and shape of a capillary pressure curve.* The location of the curve with respect to the (Vb)pc and PC axes is a measure of the interconnected pore volume and of the cross-sectional area of the pore first entered by mercury, respectively. The shape of the curve depends on the interconnection of the pores and the sorting of the pore sizes. It has been the object of this study to use this information as a starting point in an attempt to find a unique mathematical description of the PC — (Vv)p, relations of different samples. It may be expected that parameters in such a relation can then be used to describe differences in pore geometry of these samples. For a practical description of the PC — (Vb)p, relation, however, it appears desirable to describe each curve (i.e., each sample) by a limited number of parameters so that the curves taken from all samples form a family, each member of which is uniquely determined by one single combination of values of all parameters.

THE major operating costs in a cement plant are labor, power, and fuel. The opportunities and methods of savings in labor and power parallel other industries. Because our industry's use of fuel is large and its method of use is unique, the devices adapted for saving fuel are of interest. In normal practice the raw material in the form of a dry powder or a mud is fed to a rotating inclined cylinder where it is dried, calcined, and clinkered. In a Lepol kiln the raw material is rolled up into little balls with water in the nodulizer, fed to a traveling grate on which it is dried and partially calcined and tben to a short kiln where the process is finished. The more usual methods of saving heat have been the use of long kilns with chains in wet process plants and the use of waste heat boilers in dry plants (fig. 1). At the Santa Cruz plant we have used a Lepol system kiln and achieved a fuel 'economy of 4.7 gal per bbl of clinker or about 704,-000 Btu per bbl. This can be compared with our old kilns using the same fuel and raw material which consume 7.8 gal per bbl or 1,130,000 Btu per bbl. These are gross Btu and not the net figures usually used in reports of foreign companies. Our average consumption for 1948 was 708,000 Btu per bbl of Lepol clinker, based on cement sold, and oil purchased. The overall fuel consumption for 1948 was 6.61 gal per bbl. The Lepol system consists of a nodulizer, a grate, and a kiln. There is the usual accessory equipment which is similar to that used in other cement plants. The following description covers the equipment in operation at our plant. The nodulizer is a cylinder 8 ft 10 in. in diam by 18 ft long set on a slope of 1/2 in. per ft, and rotated at about 10 rpm. It is driven by a 50 hp wound rotor motor drawing about 9 kw. The inside of the shell is cleaned by a continuously operating scraper which draws 0.1 kw. The dry raw material is fed to the nodulizer where, being sprayed with water, it rolls into small spheres about 90 pct being between 1/2 and 1 in. in diam and containing about 15 pct water. "It is generally acknowledged that Canadian and foreign-based mining companies are spending relatively fewer dollars in Canada and more dollars abroad than was the case not many years ago. It is common to see the Canadian tax system being fingered as one of the causes in this shift in direction. However, if one takes the time to peel away the surface of our tax system, and to probe a little deeper into its substance, it will be found that the Canadian taxation of mining is generally quite competitive. IntroductionCross-border shopping in the mining industry? - Absolutely! Economics 100 teaches that dollars are votes in the capitalist system, and mining companies are going to cast their limited number of votes where they can achieve the highest return at the least risk. The Canadian consumer knows that taxes are a major factor in cross-border shopping, and mining company executives know that the same tenet holds true in their industry. Unfortunately, mining operations are subject to such a bewildering array of tax rules that making an intelligent decision is not always an easy matter.Statutory Tax RatesConsider, for example, the ""statutory"" tax rates shown in Table 1. (Statutory tax rate in this table refers to the simple sum of federal and provincial tax rates on profits as specified in the tax legislation.) Looking only at the total statutory tax rates (such as 66070 for Manitoba) , one might quickly observe that the Canadian mining industry is subject to a truly onerous tax regime, especially as compared to the United States where statutory tax rates can be in the 34% range."

The Antamina Concentrator plant was one of the first plants in the world, where about 60 Megawatt only in Milling Power was installed. As a consecuence of the use of Gearless Mill Drives the speed of the mills is adjustable, which allows the operators react to the different ore grades correspondingly, in order to get the best results in terms of milling efficiency. In this sense, this paper describe the basic idea of a Gearless Mill Drive, the construction of it, the manufacturing facilities, the transport, the installation and the function in detail. It gave enough insights to understand why Gearless Mill Drives are so reliable and used as an adjustable speed drive, why it counts with the highest efficiency of all drive systems.But it did describe as well the overload capabilities, the reaction to the network, the reason why the maintenance of the drive system is proven as a minor issue, and finally it was self- explaining why the Gearless Mill Drive is called a working horse.

The flotation circuit and the reagents of the all-sliming flotation about low grade and hard operation on zinc oxide ore are researched in the paper. The results indicated that there are many types of zinc minerals in this ore, and the composition is very complex. They include hemimorphite, smithsonite, hydrozincite and so on. The ore is seriously sliming. In light of the ore properties, three kinds of flowsheets have tested. They are gravity concentration (cleaning tables), flotation, combined process of gravity concentration and flotation. The test showed that the recovery of zinc is only 17.08% in the gravity separation. In combined process of gravity separation and flotation, the recovery of zinc concentrate is close to 70%. But the flow-sheet is complex and hard to control in the production. The floatation circuit is feasible. In the test, it pay attention to investigate the new combined reagent which is used in selective all?sliming flotation process. The effects of slime are eliminated by the multi-loop treatment of middling. In flotation, the final recovery of concentrate is 88.76%; the grade is 29.50%. The recovery of physical ore is 93%; and the recovery of -10mm fraction is more than 65%.
