An atomic force microscope (AFM) was used to measure the surface forces between silica surfaces immersed in solutions of hydrolysable cations and/or sodium oleate. Hydrophobic forces were observed at the pH range where the concentration of the singly-charged hydroxo-complexes (CaOH+ or MgOH+) in solution is the highest. In the absence of oleate, the adsorption of the hydroxo-complexes was indicated by the disappearance of the repulsive hydration force. These results suggest that the hydrolysable cations adsorb on silica as singly-charged hydroxo-complexes. Based on the results obtained in the present work, a model for the adsorption of hydrolysable cations has been developed.

A high temperature calorimeter designed for use up to 1500°K is described and the theory of its operation presented. This calorimeter was used to measure the heats of formation of Na-Sn alloys ranging in composition from tin to Na2Sn. The values tend to support those reported by Kubaschewski and Seith. ONE method of obtaining the heat of formation of an alloy is to measure the heat of mixing of the elements at high temperature. The principal advantage of this method is that the desired quantity is measured directly, while in conventional room temperature methods the differences of the heats of solution of the elements and the alloy in a suitable solvent are measured. A method of improving the accuracy of the high temperature measurements, when the precision of the measurement is lower than that of the heat capacity values for the elements, is to add one component at room temperature to the other at the high temperature, so that part of the heat of reaction is dissipated in heating the cold component to the high temperature. Thus, only a fraction of the heat of reaction is measured, and a result of higher precision is obtained. The limitations of the high temperature technique are that volatile systems cannot be studied, and that many alloys melt at temperatures higher than those at which the calorimetric apparatus operates readily. Nevertheless, a calorimeter operating at 1500°K would be useful in investigating many of the lower melting alloy systems and the low melting mixed oxide systems. A unit designed for these applications was built and is described here. The Na-Sn system was chosen for investigation because the temperature involved, 880°K, would adequately test the operation of the calorimeter. Further, the data reported in the literature for the various alloys of sodium and tin differ markedly, and it was hoped that this investigation would help to fix the values of the heats of formation in this system. Design of Apparatus A detailed discussion of the considerations involved in the calorimeter design is given by Mc-Kisson and Bromley,' and a brief summary follows. Fig. 1 shows a sectional view of the calorimeter. The inner graphite chamber is maintained at constant temperature by means of the circulating molten tin bath in which it is submerged. The tin is contained in a graphite vat. This unit comprises a thermostat whose heat capacity is about 7000 cal per "C. The main heating element consists of a machined graphite spiral with a room temperature resistance of about 1/2 ohm. These parts are separated from the powdered carbon external insulation by the cage, a cylindrical graphite chamber. The electrical insulators and separators, the auxiliary heater spool, and the loading tube liner are made of sintered alumina. The tin vat stirrers, the sample stir-rer, the melt thermocouple well, and the power leads are made of molybdenum. The auxiliary heater is wound with molybdenum wire and serves to compensate for the heat loss up the loading tube. All of the individual components in the high temperature region of the calorimeter will withstand at least 2000°K, and the various contacting materials should easily withstand 1500°K. The external container for the insulating carbon powder is a copper shell upon which copper tubes are soldered to serve as cooling coils.

The Bureau of Mines conducted tests using a tracer-gas technique to measure the effectiveness of the jet fan, which is often employed in mines to ventilate dead headings. Results of these tests show that jet fans can (1) ventilate dead headings beyond the maximum penetration distance indicated by smoke-tube detection of air movement, and (2) redistribute available fresh air through larger working areas. However, if the fresh air base is insufficient, the fan will merely recirculate the contaminated air and disperse it over a larger volume.

"It is generally known that the formation of calcium ferrite is favorable during the iron ore sintering, which dominatingly contributes to the improvement of strength and reducibility of the finished sinters. In this study, effects of roasting temperature and 02 content of inlet gas on the sintering mineralization properties of typical iron ores, including hematite, limonite, specularite and magnetite, were investigated. The results showed the amount of calcium ferrite initially increased then decreased with the increase of the roasting temperature. The temperature of maximum calcium ferrite generation amount for different iron ores was determined as follows: hematite and limonite was 1275 °C, whereas specularite and magnetite was 1250 °C. Increasing 02 content of inlet gas was advantageous to the generation of calcium ferrite during the sintering. The sequence of 02 content affecting the mineralization properties of different iron ores was determined as follows: magnetite > hematite > specularite > limonite.IntroductionThe mineralization property of iron ore plays a significant role in the mineral composition and microstructure of finished sinters, which determine the quality and output of the sinters [1-2]. The mineralization process of sinters is composed of solid-phase reaction, formation of liquid-phase and crystallization. The formation and crystallization of liquid-phase is the foundation to the mineralization as the quality of the sinter is poor when concreted by solid-phase consolidation [3-4]. With respect to the iron ore sintering, liquid-phase regarded as bonding phase is generated between the iron ores and fluxes at high temperature [5]. Calcium ferrite is the most favorable liquid-phase among the bonding phases which dominatingly contributes to the improvement of strength and reducibility of the finished sinters [6-8]. Especially for high iron-low silicon sintering and high basicity sintering, making sure sufficient calcium ferrite quantity and reasonable distribution is crucial to the sinters [9-10]. Therefore, carrying out the researches on the high temperature reaction properties of iron ores is of great significance [11]."

This paper introduces the concept of design theory and methodology as applied to rock mechanics for more innovative and efficient design. This is a "frontier" research area in rock mechanics because although design is a fundamental foundation to all engineering branches, very little attention has been paid to this aspect in mining. In discussing the theoretical premise of design, this paper identifies the principles which form the basis of design activity. Also, from a practical viewpoint, the findings from a series of interviews with mine design engineers are presented. These findings lead to the identification of needs arising from overlooked design methodology in practice.

Com a tendência de aumento da complexidade geométrica dos painéis de cobertura dos automóveis, aumento de resistência mecânica e diminuição da espessura dos materiais, a estampagem dessas peças tem tornado cada vez mais difícil. Neste contexto, dois graus de aços que exibem elevada resistência mecânica e boa conformabilidade, têm sido ofertados pela siderurgia à indústria automotiva, o Bake Hardenable (BH) e o Interstitial Free High Strength Steel (IFHSS). O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar aços BH e IFHSS, em termos de propriedades mecânicas, de conformabilidade, de ganho de resistência em função da deformação, envelhecimento e de resistência à indentação, em escala laboratorial. Desse modo, visou-se avaliar sob quais condições de estampagem deve ser decidido o uso do BH ou do IFHSS em aplicações de painéis automotivos. Os aços avaliados, de um modo geral, apresentaram desempenho similar em termos de conformabilidade. O aço BH foi superior ao IFHSS em relação à resistência à indentação. Portanto, o aço BH aparece como uma solução técnica atrativa, comparativamente ao aço IFHSS, quando aplicado em painéis externos (capôs, portas e paralamas) que requerem maior exigência quanto à resistência à indentação.

This paper is a follow-up to the paper presented at the SME meeting in April of 1996. Since then, the El Abra facility has been started up, 9 months ahead of schedule, and has processed about 45 million tons of ore and produced over 700 million pounds of copper. For those unfamiliar with the El Abra materials handling and leaching facilities, a brief overview of the facility is provided. The paper will then deal in detail with such aspects of Conveyor 103, the long regenerative overland conveyor, including: actual running resistance starting and stopping procedures emergency brake test at 10,000 t/h Additionally, we shall take the opportunity to report on a catastrophic culvert collapse in October 1996, which stopped the conveyor abruptly at full speed and under high load condition, causing a belt breakage. We would like to use this opportunity to thank the management of El Abra and Cyprus Amax for providing assistance and allowing us to present this paper. The El Abra team deserves a great compliment for building this one billion dollar facility in record time in a remote area of a high-altitude desert with no existing infrastructure, and for bringing it so quickly up to full operating capacity. The El Abra management had to assemble a completely new operator team. Considering the above circumstances, it took a great effort by all involved to achieve success. The official performance test which was required by the lending banks was successfully concluded in November 1997.

The Permian rocks at Gympie were first studied as far back as 1868 in conjunction with the discovery of gold. The relationship of the Gympie Group to other sequences in the Gympie Composite Terrane is an important subject of investigations in a new mapping project of the Geological Survey Program of the Department of Resource Industries.In two areas the Gympie Group has been divided into four defined formations. They are the Highbury Volcanics (base), Ram mutt Formation, South Curra Limestone and Tamaree Formation (top) in the Gympie area, and the Mant basalt (base), Kolbar Formation, Gigoomgan Limestone and Teebar Formation (top) in the Gigoomgan area. Geochemical and lithological evidence from the basal volcanics of the Gympie Group (Highbury Volcanics, Mant basalt) indicate that they developed in an intraoceanic island arc setting. The overlying volcaniclastic sediments (Rammutt Formation, Kolbar Formation), which contain some continentally-derived material, are mainly of local derivation and shallow-water marine. A hiatus is present at the top of the Early Permian Rammutt Formation and Kolbar Formation. Following the hiatus, limestone sedimentation characteristic of a basin of restricted circulation developed in the Late Permian. There is some evidence of a hiatus between the limestone deposition of the Gigoomgan and South Curra Limestones and the overlying probable turbidite deposits of the Teebar and Tamaree Pnrmatinnc

The art of electric smelting came with the turn of the present century and owes its existence to the introduction of alternating current, which found its first wide use in the establishment of the great power plants at Niagara Falls, N. Y. Prior to that time current was largely direct. The furnaces were electrolytic in nature and found their first metallurgical use in the production of aluminum, and this process still prevails. The normal production of pig iron up to that time was carried on in blast furnaces in which charcoal, coke and anthracite were used as the fuel. This new electric process called for sufficient carbonaceous material to reduce the oxides and impregnate the pig iron with sufficient carbon, but the remainder of the energy was to be supplied by electric power. The chemical reactions are essentially the same in electric smelting as obtains in the older blast furnace. All of these data are so well known in both methods as to need no discussion at this time, for they can be found in scientific : publications and books written during the first two decades of this century. Types of Furnaces The 40 years devoted to the practice of electric smelting may be divided into two . periods of 20 years each. The first was devoted to experimentation with furnace types and with many publications on theories and processes. The second half of this term was devoted to perfecting the types of furnaces and their active commercial operation. The arc furnace may be found in three types: (1) the direct-heating arc furnace with the positive electrode included in the bottom and the other electrode suspended above; (2) the independent arc furnace with its electrodes entirely above the charge, which of necessity depends upon heat reflected from the roof; (3) the direct-heating series arc furnace equipped with two or more electrodes suspended from the roof. Of these three types, only the last is used in electric smelting of iron ore at the present time. The elimination of the other types automatically removed many of the early designs, to the end that there are now only two general types in operation: (I) the " Electrometalls" or high-shaft furnace of Sweden, and (2) the low-shaft or pit-type furnace as offered by Tysland-Hole and Siemens-Halske. The "Electrometalls" furnace takes its name from the corporation formed by the engineers that had undertaken its perfection. After trying several designs they brought forward the furnace shown in Fig. I, which by the way is the highest development of this type of furnace as of today.l Note the trend in the lines, which have kept pace with modern blast-furnace design. The high-shaft furnace lends itself to skip filling and is fitted with tuyeres immediately under the crucible roof, whereby the gases are recycled and the roof preserved. Glass sands fall into that extremely select category of mineral deposits that requires a fantastic degree of natural concentration (95% +) of a single component before they can even be considered as ores suitable for further refinement. The combination of geological factors that has produced such an environment of "mineralogical single-mindedness" has appeared only rarely. Factors that require consideration in the economic evaluation of a potential glass-sand deposit can be grouped into three categories: 1) geological (e.g., size, shape, structure); 2) petrographic (e.g., grain size, accessory minerals, nature of iron contaminants); 3) geographic - political (e.g., proximity to consumer, size of market, zoning restrictions). Of particular con ern is the nature of the iron contamination. Iron-bearing species appear as 1) accessory mineral grains, either detrital or authigenic, 2) cements, 3) grain coatings, and 4) quartz-grain inclusions. Selection of the cheapest form of beneficiation requires precise information on the mineralogy of the iron species and their detailed petrography. Because of the antipathetic relationships, in many parts of the United States and Canada between the geographical locations of glass plants and the geological distribution of glass sands, the selection of ac suitable source for a particular glass plant may be dichotomous. One may seek either an exceedingly pure "classic" type glass sand that is relatively distant and whose cost includes a major transportation charge or a relatively proximate and somewhat "impure" source whose cost includes a substantial fee for beneficiation.

The solubility of nitrogen in vanadium is determined from 275" to 575°C by measuring the height of the nitrogen internal friction peak of equilibrated V-N alloys. The proportionality constant at 275°C between the internal friction peak height (Q- 1) and the atom percent nitrogen in solution is found to be 0.095 per at. pct for nitrogen concentrations up to 0.8 at. pct. The heat of solution of the nitride in vanadium is 5500 cal per mole. The solubility of nitrogen in the Group V metals is discussed. LITTLE work has been performed on the vanadium-nitrogen terminal solid solution. Hahn1 found the solubility for nitrogen to be very small and reported the existence of a hexagonal phase of composition near that of V2N at the solubility limit. Rostoker and Yamarnoto2 reported the solubility to be at least 3.5 at. pct at the melting point and to be less than this value at 900°C. In addition, they reported from X-ray diffraction studies that nitrogen in solution produces tetragonality in the vanadium lattice. An X-ray study by Schonberg3 has confirmed the results of Hahn but indicated that the tetragonality observed by Rostoker and Yamamoto was due to the presence of oxygen in their specimens. Beatty4 has performed lattice parameter and hardness measurements on terminal solid solutions and found the upper limit of the solubility to be at least 0.66 at. pct N. No measurements have been made of the pressure-temperature-composition relationships (P-T-X) for the terminal solid solution. As a part of a research program on gas-metal equilibrium, an attempt was made to study the P-T-X relationships in the V-N system using both the internal friction and the gas equilibration methods which have been successful with the Nb(Cb)-N and Ta-N systems (see Ref. 5 for a review of this work). Extensive investigation, using the gas equilibration methods, showed this method not to be applicable with vanadium This was presumably due to the gettering action of vanadium sublimed on the walls of the Sieverts apparatus. Thus, the nitrogen pressure relationships with temperature and composition were not obtained. The internal friction methods were, however, found to be applicable, and the temperature-composition relationships are reported in this paper and compared with similar results for the Nb-N6 and Ta-N7 systems. The existence of a Snoek internal friction peak due to nitrogen in solution in vanadium has been clearly demonstrated. 8-10 Powers and Doyle found the peak to be at approximately 275°C for frequencies near 1 cps.8 In a subsequent paper10 they reported the proportionality constant at 275°C between the internal friction peak height (Q-1) and the concentration of ni- trogen in solution (in atom percent) as 0.06 per at. pct. The studies of Stanley and wert9 indicated qualitatively that the height of the Snoek peak decreased with aging at the peak temperature and thus suggested that internal friction methods were suitable for study of the solubility. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The vanadium for this investigation was of particularly high purity. It was obtained from the Ames Laboratory of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, Ames, Iowa in the form of a 1/2-in. diam, three pass zone-refined ingot. The electrical resistivity ratio (p300ºk/p4ºk) was 160. The initial composition was determined as follows: Carbon 200 ppm Oxygen 150 ppm Chromium <50 pprn Iron 125 ppm Silicon <50 ppm Other metallic 100 pprn The initial vanadium ingot was fabricated to 30-mil wire by swaging and wire drawing without the need of intermediate annealing. Lengths of this wire were then further purified (particularly for oxygen) by outgassing at 10-6 torr at 1400°C for 4 hr. The outgassing treatment resulted in specimens with a bamboo grain structure and a lustrous appearance. Desired amounts of nitrogen were added to the outgassed wires in a Sieverts apparatus in which known amounts of nitrogen were equilibrated with the wire at 1300°C. Nitrogen concentrations were produced in the desired range from less than 1 to 10 at. pct N. Monitoring of the partial pressure of nitrogen in the Sieverts apparatus indicated that at 1300°C equilibrium between the nitrogen gas and the vanadium was obtained within 10 min. Relatively rapid cooling from the nitrogen addition temperature was obtained simply by turning off the specimen heating current and cooling to room temperature in the partial pressure of nitrogen. Internal friction measurements of wire specimens were made under forepump vacuum in a torsional pendulum at frequencies near 1 cps. The torsional pendulum was of low thermal inertia and was designed so that specimens could be heated both by a conventional tube furnace and by the joule heating of a separate current through the wire specimen." Use of a static atmosphere of helium gas as a quenching medium made it possible to cut the specimen current, rapidly cool the specimen to the measurement temperature, and make a measurement of the internal friction in less than 1 min. Because of the large solubility of vanadium for nitrogen, the internal friction peak heights were in some cases greater than Q-1 = 0.1. This high damping resulted in an estimated relative uncertainty in the damping measurements of approximately 10 pct. X-ray analyses made to identify the precipitated ni-

A thermodynamic model for a priori predictions of arsenic and antimony impurity capacity in Ni-Cu mattes and slags was developed based on the Reddy-Blander (RB) capacity model. The As and Sb capacities were calculated a-priori considering the RB capacity model in Ni-Cu mattes and FeO-FeO1.5-MgO-CuO0.5-NiO-SiO2 slag at 1573 K and 0.1 to 1 atm partial pressure of SO2. The results showed an excellent agreement between the model calculated and experimental data of arsenic and antimony capacities between the mattes and slag. The impurity capacity model developed here, can be extended for prediction of impurity capacities in multi-component base metal slags and base metal mattes. Such a priori predictions of impurity capacities can lead to develop or improve the efficiency of impurity removal from the base metal smelting, converting and refining processes.

An experimental 1.75 meter Shaft Boring Machine was designed and manufactured by The Robbins Company. The drill was used by contractor Drillcon Raise AB to drill test shafts at an SKB underground test facility. SKB is the Swedish authority responsible for safe management of nuclear waste materials. This “SBM1.8” Shaft Boring Machine was used to drill shallow test shafts ingranitic rock at SKB’s Aspo underground laboratory. The drill used a unique vacuum mucking system. The bored shafts were held to very strict tolerances for bore diameter, straightness, and verticality. This drill was launched and operated from a mobile launcher. Headroom and working space were limited. The SBM1.8 drill produced acceptable test holes. SKB will carry out several studies to determine the suitability of this geology, and of this technique, for safe nuclear disposal. In addition to future use at SKB, many applications are foreseen, particularly in the civil construction industry.

VENTILATION of the Butte mines has long been a rather difficult problem because of the natural high temperature of the rock. With increase in mining depth, higher rock temperatures have been encoun-tered, and this has caused a constantly growing demand for more effective ventilation measures. During recent years the hazards of dust in mine air have been more clearly recognized, and have necessitated the adoption of dust-prevention methods. To meet these ventilation problems in the mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., a mines ventilation department was organized in 1918, to act under the direction of the general superintendent of mines. At the present time, under normal operating conditions, the force employed includes the ventilation engineer, two chief assistant ventilation engineers and eight assistant ventilation engineers. The activities of the department are, briefly: (1) planning and supervising operation of the general ventilation system; (2) planning and supervising the operation of dust-prevention measures, together, with dust sampling and related microscopic work for the quantitation of the dust samples and determina-tion of particle-size distribution; (3) the design and development of air-conditioning methods to meet present exceptionally severe temperature conditions and in anticipation of future requirements. To a large extent the technical features of the ventilation methods have been described in earlier papers by the author. This paper is written mainly to summarize past accomplishments bearing most closely on health and safety, with a somewhat more detailed account of the dust-prevention measures that have been developed comparatively recently.

"The key words which characterize vanadium are: unlimited availability, versatility of applications and price stability. The supply of vanadium is assured by diversified sources, distributed all over the globe. The inexhaustible raw materials base is complemented by a strong vanadium industry. Both the fully integrated vanadium producers and converters of vanadium oxide or vanadium-containing slags or residues guarantee an adequate supply, commensurate with the steady growing demand.The major share of the world&apos;s vanadium output is being consumed by the steel industry. As an additive to steel, the versatility of vanadium is particularly impressive. A few hundreds of one per cent of vanadium convert plain carbon steel into high-strength, low-alloy steel with more than double strength. On the other extreme, high-speed steels made via the powder metallurgy route show superior performance with vanadium additions as high as 6 or 8 percent.
