[This is the sixth in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative Agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of tines of the Department of the Interior. The first report gave data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935.-36.3/ The present report cover brands of gasoline represented by 1,490 samples plus thus: from the Pacific Coat, which ;sere averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were submitted. In some areas reports were received from 8 to 10 companies on the same brands of gasoline, Whereas in other areas only one Company reported on a brand. Thus, it can be seen that soma of the data are more representative than others. The inclusion of data from several cities within some of the districts has improved the report by reducing the number of brands reported by only one company. Severe changes have been made in the districts. A new district, Memphis, Tenn., has been formed to include Arkansas any western Tennessee. The Rocky Mountain area, have been divided into three sections. Salt Lake City and Denver form the Middle Rocky Mountain district; Laramie, Wyo., Idaho, Montana, and. Spokane, Wash., are included in the North Rocky Mountain district, and Arizona, New Mexico , and El Paso, Tex., have been combined to represent the South Rock Mountain district. The Cleveland district has been expanded to include Ohio ant. Indiana. Eastern Pennsylvania, Maryland, and northern Virginia are included in the Washington (D. C.) district. External detonation generated plasmas, highly ionized zones of reacting material ejected from the surface of detonating explosive charges, are shown to be the cause of channel desensitization, i.e., the self-quenching of a detonating explosive column loaded in a borehole with an air annulus between the explosive and the borehole wall.

At last year's Annual Meeting a paper by Haultain and Johnston was presented entitled Is the Gold in Tellttrides Soluble in Cyanide? Since then the writer has continued the study of various phases of this problem. Samples and specimens of ore from some of the Kirkland Lake mines have been studied and non gold-bearing tellurides have been found in these that are not soluble in ordinary mill solutions. Samples of tailings, both old and recent, from this district have been examined with apparatus and methods that have proved very successful in detecting the presence of extremely minute quantities of tellurides. Tellurides, both base-metal and gold-bearing, have been discovered in these tailings, but only in such minute quantities that their presence would not affect the ordinary assay results. More free gold particles have been found in the tailings than gold-bearing tellurides. Much experimental work has been done on tellurides, concentrated from high-grade material and from ordinary run-of-mine ore. The gold-bearing tellurides behave very much as does gold itself. Finely divided particles are dissolved fairly rapidly, coarser particles more slowly. All the tellurides are soft and brittle and also have a high specific gravity, with the result that they are extremely finely divided in ordinary mill practice. The ordinary high-lime solution of Kirkland Lake practice is suitable for the dissolving of the gold tellurides. Oxygen is necessary, but apparently not more so than in dissolving gold. Some particles have been found that appear under the microscope to be ordinary metallic gold particles, but on heating they show a small telluride content. These appear to dissolve more slowly than gold. There is considerable variation in the ratio of tellurides to gold from different points in the mines. So far the writer has failed to find any connection between this ratio and the richness of the ore. Generally speaking, the base-metal tellurides predominate. Some of these contain gold but this may be due to a mixture of tellurides in the one particle.

Coals, other than anthracite, have been so thoroughly studied under the microscope during recent years, that we now know what kinds of plants and what parts of plants form the bulk of lower rank coals from peat to bituminous coal. The microscope has also shown the state of preservation of such vegetation as well as the nature and distribution of products of plant decay. These and further details have been ascertained mainly through the employment of two methods of attack, section cutting and maceration. Anthracite has failed to respond to these methods, so well adapted to the study of lower rank coals and, therefore, has been neglected by investigators to such an extent that there is much doubt as to its microscopical characteristics. The object of this paper is to lift anthracite from its realm of obscurity by demonstrating the wealth of microscopical detail that is revealed when reflected light is used on a properly polished and etched surface and, further, to show the relationship between anthracite and bituminous coal. Technique The method adopted in this investigation is similar to that described in an earlier paper.' Because of slight modifications recently made, the process is again described. It consists, briefly, of etching a polished surface of coal with heat. Although pieces of various sizes and shapes are used, blocks of coal about 2 or 3 cm. square take the most uniform polish and are large enough to be handled with ease. Larger pieces can be used if one has the equipment for polishing them and they rnay be desirable when one wishes to study some particular form that extends for some distance through the coal. Large surfaces, however, require greater care in polishing and etching; for this reason, they are not recommended for ordinary work.

The completion of the Hot Strip Mill at the Port Kembla works of Australian Iron & Steel Ltd., makes possible the production of steel plates and wide strip of a quality and in quantities not possible previously in Australia, and will also enable the production of tinplate to be undertaken in this country.The site chosen for the mill was a mud fiat underlain by a hard stone bottom at 5, to 801 feet below the surface; and a total area of one hundred acres was reclaimed to a level of 20 feet above the original surface.Three adjoining buildings were constructed to house the slab receiving yard, mill equipment and electric drive, together with the plate finishing line.After slabs have been heated to 2250°F at a rate of 90 tons per hour, they are transferred to the vertical scale breaker which is the first stand in the hot roughing mill. Here the primary furnace scale is first cracked and then blasted off by high velocity water descaling sprays.The next stand is the horizontal scale l;Jreaker, where any remaining primary scale is broken and then blasted off. After descaling, the slabs pass to the broadside mill, where short slabs are turned and rolled on broad side for wide plate.The next step is a slab squeezer which squares up the edges after broadsiding ready for the reversing mill. This is the finishing stand for plate and the last roughing stand for strip, which then passes to the finishing mill.The hot strip finishing mill consists of six stands with a maximum finishing speed of 2,230 feet per minute. Ph.D. (Toronto) (Visitor) A study was made of the kinetics in the leaching of nickel from pentlandite in dilute-acidic ferric sulphate solutions as a basis for subsequent studies on bacterial leaching. The chemical leaching rate was found to be highly dependent on the temperature and the concentration of ferric ions. The proposed mechanism for the leaching process is one involving rate control by chemical processes and mass transport. Good agreement was found between the experimental data and the proposed mechanism.

What is special about being a female mine manager? We do not believe that the challenge is greater for women in managing a mine compared to managerial positions in other male-dominated businesses. The challenge lies in the fact that it is a male-dominated business. Being a leader belonging to a minority creates a situation where competence not only lies in having technical knowledge or general leadership characteristics, but also in acquiring an understanding of the male norm and being able to behave and communicate effectively in the organisation.In order to move towards a better gender balance at senior levels it is important to set measurable objectives on desirable proportions between women and men at management levels within the company. Focus and action are required to achieve this goal. At LKAB, the current target is to reach 25 per cent women in the total workforce by 2020. To date, LKAB has reached 19.4 per cent women in the total workforce, and the number of women in management positions is 19.9 per cent.It is of vital importance to create a non-discriminating working environment to achieve equal opportunities at the workplace, to be able to use the whole workforce as a resource for recruitment of professionals and managers, thereby improving decision-making, productivity, efficiency and profitability.Women as mine managers is not a utopia, but rather an effect of long-term investments in actions that result in equal opportunities for all employees.CITATION:Quinteiro, M and Sundqvist, Å, 2016. "A combination of oxidation and precipitation was used to eliminate cyanide from gold milling effluents. Preliminary laboratory work developed with both synthetic cyanide solutions and with industrial effluents indicated that ozone can easily destroy free cyanide and weakly complexed cyanide (i.e. copper and zinc cyanide). In this case the reaction is quite fast and seems to be controlled by the mass transfer of ozone to the solution. Experimental results indicate that free cyanide and weak-acid dissociable cyanide in mill effluents can be reduced to less than 1 ppm. However, the iron-cyanide complexes proved to be quite resilient to destruction with ozone and they remained in the solution even after most of the free and weakly complexed cyanide was destroyed with ozone. These results were confirmed in a pilot trial developed at the Sphinx plant in northern Quebec.To deal with the problem presented by the presence of the iron complexes two different approaches were studied: use of a combination ozone-ultraviolet light oxidation, and the precipitation of iron-ferrocyanide complexes in the residual solution after ozonation. This last method proved quite promising since reduced the total cyanide levels of industrial solutions assaying as much as 250 ppm to less than 1 ppm of total cyanide. Control of the · pH of the solution was the key to obtain the precipitation of the iron complexes. The use of iron to precipitate cyanide complexes has the advantage of being less expensive and less toxic than copper (used by the Inco process)."

MOLYBDENUM is thought of as one of the rarer elements, for though it occurs in almost every country of the world it is seldom found in commercial quantities. In this country, however, there is one deposit which makes the term "rare" a misnomer. There are two commercially mined molybdenum minerals: molybdenite, the sulfide, and wulfenite, a lead molybdate. Of these two only the former is of any con- sequence but wulfenite is of mineralogical interest. It is frequently associated with oxidized lead ores and particularly in arid sections. Deposits, however, are usually quite superficial. It is highly oxidized and yet it does not appear to be an alteration product for it apparently disappears below water level and I know of no case where primary molybdenite, or in fact any molybdenum whatever has been identified below these surface wulfenite occurrences. The genesis of wulfenite would make an !- interesting study.

INTRODUCTION The measurement of the total activity of radon daughters in the air of mines has become a routine procedure in order to control the radiation exposure in miners due to the inhalation of these radionuclides. Normally the measured concentration is given in terms of total potential L-energy of the short lived radon daughters. The unit most frequently used is 1 WL (working level), which is defined as the potential a-energy of 1.3.105 MeV per 1 of air. The a-dose to the respiratory tract is, however, not proportional to the inhaled potential a-energy. In addition, the degree of equilibrium between the daughter products in air and the fraction of daughter products not attached to aerosol particles (the unattached fraction) must be known. Theoretical calculations of the equilibrium between daughters and the unattached fraction have been presented by different authors (Jacobi, 1972; Porstendörfer et al, 1978). Such calculations must take into account the plateout of daughters on surfaces, the attachment of daughters to aerosols and removal of daughters by the ventilation. The situation in mines will however be very complex and no single model will cover all situations. In most cases the radon and radon daughter concentrations will be described by a combination of different models. Domanski (1979) used the experimental results of Breslin et al. (1969) from uranium mines to relate the equilibrium between the individual daughters to the equilibrium factor, F. Once the equilibrium factor is known, this seems to be a useful approach to assess the individual daughter concentrations. The concentrations of radon and daughter products may vary considerably during the day. Seasonal variations are also frequently found. It is therefore important to have knowledge of the magnitude of these variations and of the factors having the strongest influence upon the concentrations. The unattached fraction of radon daughters in uranium mines was investigated by George and Hinchliffe (1972) and Raghavayya and Jones (1974). Mercer (1975) later modified the results of Raghavayya and Jones. Both these investigations indicated that the aerosol particle concentrations was the main influencing factor upon the unattached fraction. In this paper we will summarize the main results of a study on the radiological characterics of nonuranium mines. We will also discuss the correlations between the unattached fraction of the potential a-energy and the unattached fraction of the individual daughters, and between the equilibrium factor F, and the individual daughter ratios. More detailed discussions of this study will be published elsewhere (Stranden and Berteig, 1981 and Stranden and Berteig 1981 a). MATERIAL AND METHODS During 4 two-weeks periods corresponding to the seasons in the Norwegian mine where the highest radon daughter concentrations occure, the parameters listed in table 1 were studied. RESULTS Correlation between equilibrium factor and individual daughter ratios. The mean value of the equilibrium factor in all Norwegian mines measured during the last ten years was 0.46 with a minimum of 0.08 and maximum of 0.93 (Stranden and Berteig, 1981). The correlations between the equilibrium factor F, and the individual radon daughter/radon ratios were studied and the results indicated high correlations. In table 2, these correlation formulae are listed together with the correlation coefficients. The purpose of this investigation was to obtain complete information on some of the uses of a 24-inch-diameter auger in the underground mining of pitching anthracite beds. The auger was placed in operation early in 1958 to drive ventilation connections between coal gangways driven by a continuous miner. Although designed to drill rise holes only, it was used also to drill dip holes. The latter holes were drill id from an adjacent gangway to avoid interference between the auger and the continuous miner. These holes established immediate ventilation returns when intersected by the continuous miner. Bureau participation in the project covered 361 working days. The auger was used on 288 shifts, usually one 7-hour shift per day, and drilled 3,246 feet, of which 493 feet were reamed. The longest hole was 87 feet; hence the maximum drilling depth of the machine (rated at 100 feet) was not required. Holes drilled normal to the strike of the bed ranged from 30 to 66 feet deep, averaging 45 feet. The continuous miner drove gangways on 575 shifts. Thus, the auger worked one shift for each two worked by the continuous miner and was used on less than 80 percent of the workdays. The auger drove 24-inch holes 10 times faster than the larger, conventional openings could have been driven by usual mining methods and exceeded the workload for which it was purchased. Augering eliminates exposure to the hazards encountered in driving chute-work by conventional methods and provides adequate circular ventilation openings, which are strong in self support and are adaptable to reaming when required. With alterations, the auger may have limited use as a production machine in thin-bed pitch mining but cannot compete with established methods of thick-bed pitch mining.

This paper presents results of an experimental investigation of factors that control the efficiency with which oil is displaced from porous media by a miscible fluid. The study was made to elucidate the relevant processes both on microscopic level (within individual or between neighboring pore spaces) and on macroscopic level (within a large sand body). Mixing of miscible fluids on the microscopic level was studied in sand-packed tubes. It was found that molecular diffusion is the dominant dispersion mechanism for reservoir conditions of rate, length and pore sizes. Macroscopic channeling was studied for various mobility ratios in reservoir mode1s scaled to relate viscous, gravitational, and diffusional forces. The formation of channels was due to viscous firzgering, gravity segregation and variations in permeability. With adverse mobility ratios, it was found for reservoirs of realistic widths that diffusion will not be effective in preventing the formation and growth of fingers, even in homogeneous sands. At sufficiently low rates channeling was eliminated by gravity segregation in tilted reservoirs. The dependence of recovery on mobility ratio, length-to-width ratio, flow rate and angle of dip is presented. INTRODUCTION Oil recovery by solvent flooding is finding increasing application in the field. While the process promises high recoveries from the region swept by solvent, under adverse conditions only a small fraction of the reservoir volume may be swept at the time solvent breaks through to the producing well. Further, the high cost of the solvent encourages its use only as a bank whose size must be kept at a minimum. Thus, two important questions arise: (1) what fraction of the reservoir can be swept, practically, by solvent? and (2) what is the minimum size solvent bank that can be used to carry out the displacement? The answers to these questions require knowledge of both macroscopic channeling processes and microscopic mixing processes. The studies described here were carried out to gain this knowledge. Microscopic mechanisms which cause mixing will be discussed first, because an understanding of these mechanisms is necessary for proper interpretation of the experimental work on channeling described later. INVESTIGATION OF MICROSCOPIC DISPLACEMENT PHENOMENA FOR MISCIBLE FLUIDS The questions to be resolved concerning microscopic displacement behavior are: (1) how much mixing occurs between oil and solvent in the direction of flow? and (2) does the solvent completely flush the oil from the pore spaces in the region invaded by solvent? The classic work of Sir Geoffrey Taylor' and its extension by Aris2 have shown that it is possible from theory to describe the amount of mixing in single straight capillaries when solvent displaces a fluid of equal viscosity and equal density. Aris showed that the lengths of the mixing zones, 81, corresponding to the 10 per cent and 90 per cent concentration levels of the solvent can be calculated from the formula, 81 = 3.62 \/Kt, .........(1) where 8l is the length of the mixing zone, cm; t is the time, sec; and K is the effective dispersion coefficient, cm2/sec, given by K/D = 1 + (1/48) (au/D)2......(2) where a is the radius of the capillary, cm; D is the molecular diffusivity, cm2/sec; u is the average velocity

THIS CHAPTER of the Minerals Yearbook contains injury experience and related employment information for the coal-mining, coking, oil and gas, peat, and native asphalt industries in the United States for 1962. Injury experience is measured by the number of injuries sustained per million man-hours of exposure in each industry. No attempt has been made to combine these data and present rates reflecting the mineral-fuel industries because the hazards of the separate industries are not comparable. Tabulations showing the trend of injuries and employment for all mineral industries are presented in volume III of the Minerals Yearbook. COAL The injury-frequency rate for the coal-mining industry of the United States increased less than 2 percent, according to reports received by the Bureau of Mines. The number of fatal and nonfatal injuries per million man-hours in 1962 was 45.86, based on final data for anthracite mines and preliminary data for bituminous coal and lignite mines.

Blast and mining spillover between phases or critical areas of the pit is a continuing problem in the mining industry and a safety concern for operating mines. The challenge for many mines is to produce the highest value in the shortest amount of time for any project. For any project, the top priority of any mine is producing ore as fast as possible. The next challenge is to keep that ore feed continuous. To achieve continuous ore feed, pits are designed with multiple phases that are connected and are mined at different elevations. This difference in elevation causes dangers with spillover between the phases during mining, drilling, and blasting. This paper covers an incident that occurred at an active mine and the work completed in creating a spillover control program over an active mining phase. The drill and blast technical group was responsible for creating blast patterns to reduce spillover between these phases. Unrealistic goals and expectations were initially set for the area of the pit. The drill and blast technical group needed to figure blast objectives and work with the geotechnical team to align with these goals. This paper will go over the executed example of setting up spillover targets and expectations for multiple sections of an operating mine. Different sections of the pit had different control measures and blast objectives due to narrow laybacks and double benching. The use and value of blast objectives and goals were beneficial in setting expectations and measuring design success. Having unrealistic blast goals can set up the operations to fail or get frustrated in trying to work on an impossible task. The problems and risks of phase interactions for many open pit operations need to be considered in the design process, along with designed controls that minimize the probability of any safety incident. Mine designs are being created in the industry and do not consider phase-to-phase mining interaction and the impact it would have on safety or production. The best future for safer mines is blast patterns that reduce spillover between phases of mining and pit designs that might account for spillover interaction.

The effect of heat treatment on the microstructure and resultant notch-bar rupture life of ZNCONEL alloys X- 750 and 718 was studied. It was found that the primary effect of heat treatment in rendering these alloys notch-ductile is the elimination of any y' denuded zone adjacent to the pain boundaries. The mechanisms by which such a denuded zone can arise and be eliminated by heat treatment are discussed. InCONEL Ni-Cr alloy X-750 and INCONEL Ni-Cr alloy 718 are age-hardenable austenitic materials. Alloy X-750 is used for its corrosion and oxidation resistance and high creep-rupture strength up to 1500°F. Alloy 718 is used most effectively up to 1300°F. One of the most important areas in their development has been establishment of consistently good rupture properties, especially in the presence of a stress concentration, such as imposed by a notch. A desire to improve these properties has led to extensive studies of the effect of heat treatment on the micro structure of these alloys and their performance in stress-rupture tests. Modern technology has provided the world with many innovations to improve living standards, ease of job performance, efficiency, and managerial control. While not expected to compete with the computer revolution, Kerr-McGee Coal Corporation has found a way using laser technology to solve one of their haulage problems. Operating successful and profitable surface coal mine facilities in Wyoming's Powder River Basin require economies of scale, flexibility of operation, conscientious cost control, and ever-present innovative effort. Because haulage costs are the major source of expenditure in surface mining, Kerr-McGee recognized early the need for maximum haulage productivity and the economies of scale provided by large haulage trucks. Special conditions that exist in the Powder River Basin coal fields require consideration. The coal thickness (up to 100 feet and more) and varying depths of overburden dictate that a haulage unit with good gradability characteristics be used to avoid undesirable long ramps. Two and often three coal seams are encountered by most mines, which necessitates operating from several coal and parting faces simultaneously. This situation consumes much space, and to minimize the scope of problems, a coal haulage unit with good maneuverability and stability is needed. Finally, the low density of coal (±1500 pounds/loose cubic yard) demands a large volume capacity to utilize truck load carrying capability effectively. These conditions prompted Kerr-McGee to select unitized two-axle bottom dump trucks of the 160-170 ton size for primary coal haulage at its two Gillette-area mines. The design, construction and monitoring of the deep excavation support for the basement of a large-scale commercial development in Cavan, Ireland is presented. Excavation area was adjacent to existing structures and retained height H varied between 4.0m ? 11.0m. In areas where excavation depth H < 5.0m, wall was designed as cantilevered section. However in sections where 5.0m = H = 11m, additional wall supports were required for serviceability reasons. Traditionally, designers often provide additional wall support through the use of tie-back ground anchors, raking props and braces. On the current project, the main contractor was not in support of the use of temporary props so as to maximise working space, while owners of adjacent properties disapproved the use of tie-backs. The limited set-back between the wall line and site boundary also contributed to the complexity of the project. A rare alternative solution has been adopted. This novel approach involved buttressing the wall with steeply raking bored tension piles at regular intervals along the wall. Comparison of the monitored deflections in the cantilevered sections with those recorded at sections where tension piles were used shows the novel solution to be safe and quite effective. This approach is also considered to be more economical when compared with ground anchorage and propping.

This evaluation of the sulfurous acid process for the production of metallurgical-grade alumina is the first of a series concerning various known methods of extracting alumina from low-grade aluminous materials and was undertaken to permit comparison with other processes. In the process with which this Bureau of Mines report is concerned, calcined clay is leached under pressure with 20 percent sulfurous acid and then filtered to remove a siliceous residue. The aluminum sulfite remaining in the filtrate is precipitated as a monobasic sulfite which, together with iron sulfite, is then decomposed under pressure to form a crude alumina hydrate and iron oxide. This intermediate product is purified in a modified Bayer process to yield alumina suitable for electrolytic reduction to aluminum. A study estimate (16)3 is used for these evaluations. The capital cost, not including land, is estimated at $95,701,600 on a Marshall and Stevens index basis of 240.0 for a plant producing 1,000 tons a day of alumina or 350,000 tons a year. The annual operating cost for this size plant is estimated at $22,831,100 or $65.23 per ton of alumina using clay at $1 per ton. Depreciation and local taxes are included in the estimate, but profit and Federal taxes are not considered.
