The Roan Antelope concentrator was originally designed with a nominal milling capacity of 6000 tons of copper ore per day but this was subsequently considerably exceeded. In broad outline the plant consisted of two No. 30 McCully gyratory crushers for coarse crushing, five 5½-ft Standard Symons crushers in open circuit for secondary crushing, ten No. 98 Marcy ball mills arranged in five sections, each two-mill section with primary and secondary Dorr classifiers for two-stage grinding. One stage of flotation roughing was followed by two stages of cleaning, all in airlift type pneumatic flotation machines, with the final concentrates filtered on Oliver drum filters. Tailing was thickened in a 250-ft Dorr traction type thickener before pumping to the tailing dam. Concentrating operations commenced in June 1931, on the completion of the first two ball-milling sections and output was increased during the next few months as the remaining sections were finished. From the start, very few technical difficulties were experienced but a number of evolutionary changes have been made as a result of operating experience and the availability of improved equipment. These have resulted in plant and ore-flow alterations although the general scheme of ore treatment remains substantially as before. The main changes to date were the installation of a new crushing plant at Storke shaft, some 7000 ft west of the original Beatty shaft; the completion of a two-stage secondary crushing plant; an increase of 20 pct in ball-milling capacity; a change-over from pneumatic to a mcchanical type of flotation machine for flotation roughing; the reduction of flotation cleaning from two stages to one stage. Ore Treated Typically the ore treated consists of metamorphosed shales and sandstones with shales as the principal mineral-bearing rock carrying chalcocite, bornite and chalcopy-rite as the main copper minerals. Chalcocite predominated in the original eastern end of the ore body but there is a pronounced trend to an increased proportion of the copper-iron sulphides as mining proceeds westward. Although the ore can be described as soft, this advantage is offset by the extremely fine dissemination of the copper minerals which calls for a high degree of comminution of the ore (go pct minus-zoo mesh Tyler standard) to give a reasonably satisfactory separation of mineral from gangue. Latterly, there has been a tendency for the ore to become harder as shown by a reduction in the ball-milling rate from a previous figure of over goo tons per ball-mill day to the present output of some 800 tons. Chalcopyrite is not so finely disseminated and has also proved more amenable to flotation than chalcocite. The results of a preliminary investigation of the aluminum-iron-manganese system showed that small amounts of iron (0.10 per cent) substantially reduce the solid solubility of manganese in aluminum. This is clearly shown in the photomicrographs of three alloys, Figs. 1 to 3. Fig. 1, of an alloy containing 1.04 per cent manganese after a heat treatment at 626° C. for 45 hr., shows only solid solution. This alloy contained less than 0.008 per cent iron. Fig. 2 shows the abundance of a constituent (which undoubtedly contains aluminum, manganese and iron) in an alloy containing 1.00 per cent manganese and 0.11 percent iron after a solution heat treatment at 625" C. for 63 hr. For comparison, Fig. 3 is included to show the relatively small amount of constituent (FeA13) in a similarly heat-treated aluminum alloy containing 0.10 per cent iron but no manganese. These data necessitated a reconsideration of the binary aluminum-manganese diagram that was previously presented,' inasmuch as the alloys used in that work contained from 0.02 to 0.05 per cent iron. This paper is the fourteenth of a series from the Research Laboratories of the Aluminum Company of America reporting the results of investigations of equilibrium relations in aluminum-base alloys of high purity. The purpose was to determine the phase relations in aluminum with aluminum-manganese alloys containing the smallest amount of iron that could be realized with the purest material available at the present time (less than 0.01 per cent iron). Since the previous publication from these laboratories, five investigations of the aluminum-manganese system have been reported. Krings and Ostmannz assigned the formula MnA14 to the compound at the aluminum end of the syst,em, and found a eutectic between this compound and aluminum at 649" C. and 3 per cent manganese.

PART I DENSITY AND ENERGY CHANGES IN COLD-WORKED COPPER IT has long been supposed that when crystalline materials are com-minuted the energy used in the production of increasingly smaller grain sizes is not entirely dissipated as heat but that a certain portion is "stored" as a part of the internal energy of the material. This portion usually has been called the "surface energy" of the particles. The practical interest of the Bureau of Mines in this subject in connection with the energy requirements of crushing processes has led' to the author's attempt to measure the "stored" energy in finely divided calcite by heat-of-solution methods1. The experiments on calcite showed that "storage" of energy could not be proved for this material, because fine grinding caused a lack of chem-ical homogeneity evidenced by loss of carbon dioxide and subsequent adsorption of water on the surfaces of the calcite particles. When thermochemical correction was made for composition changes the cor-rected heat of solution was less for fine material than for coarse. Con-tinuation of the experimental work into the problem of comparing work and heat in the deformation of metallic crystals, where the calorimetric difficulties were less, showed, however, that in the case of copper and aluminum a real discrepancy between work and heat could be shown. Technical and non-technical challenges exist in each mega infrastructure project. It?s no exception to the first US underground PPP Port of Miami Tunnel (POMT) project in Miami, FL. The POMT will connect two man-made islands, the Dodge and the Watson Islands, under the Biscayne Bay within highly porous limestone formation. Permeability as high as 0.1 cm/sec has been identified. Its 41-ft outside diameter, if constructed, is the largest precast segment lining in the US. Besides its geological and hydro geological challenges and risks, local community influence and impacts have controlled the fate of this project. This paper describes its tender design enhancements and the evolving of its slow advancement in resolving local community issues.

The title of this address was selected before I had an opportunity to consider in detail the matters that I would like to discuss. Accordingly, I chose a very broad subject-so broad indeed that it would be foolhardy for me to attempt to deal with more than a few aspects of it. I do not propose to touch. at all on the developments to date of our mining and metallurgical enterprises, beyond paying a sincere tribute'to the skill and enterprise of those who have established an international reputation for Australian mining and metallurgy. I would rather look ahead and discuss certain factors that will play a decisive part in the future development of our mineral resources. I do this in no dogmatic spirit, and I hope that my remarks may lead to discussions which will stimulate action where it is needed.In recent years my colleagues and I have been forced by circumstances to give consideration to problems in the fields of mining and geology, and in process metallurgy, which lie outside the scope of our own research work. People come to us with metallurgical problems because they know of no more appropriate place to go, and it is distressing to have to inform them that it is nobody's job to offer them advice and assistance. I want to suggest to your Institute that it should press strongly for the provision of properresearch facilities for the mining and metallurgical industries, such as aready exist in most enlightened countries. In such countries, those connected with the development of mineral resources are able to obtain information and advice from Geological Surveys, Mines Departments or Bureaux of Mines, which offer far more comprehensive services than are available in this country.Before discussing specific technical problems of the mining and minerals industries, I shall enunciate certain general principles that I believe should be followed in respect to the technical side of the development of all Australian industries. The problem can, I suggest, be considered in three parts-technical education production, and research. I shall confine my remarks mostly to the research aspect, for it is with this that I am most familiar.For the efficient development of any industry in Australia, it is essential firstly that We should learn what is going on abroad, and secondly that we should simultaneously conduct independent research. In the latter sphere the Governmeht'departments and the private companies' or groups of companies should have complementary functions, the former concentrating on problems common to a number of companies or industries, and the latter on their oWn individual problems. Umicore and MWH jointly demonstrated that mechanical dewatering of goethite and neutralised tailings significantly increased the life of a 30 ha tailings pond and improved the operation of the pond. Umicore operates one of its zinc production plants in Balen, Belgium. As part of its production process, an excess of neutralised and goethite¬containing tailings is generated. These have historically been stored inside large lined ponds. As the storage area of the current goethite pond was nearing its capacity, Umicore studied the potential for an extension to the existing embankment. However, this extension would face intense regulatory scrutiny, because the environmental and safety impacts were considered important. Together with Umicore, MWH suggested and investigated an alternative treatment approach consisting of mechanical dewatering prior to storage. A feasibility study was prepared where wet storage was compared to dry storage. Differences in safety risks, environmental impacts and economic costs were outlined. The study demonstrated that the life of the tailings pond could be increased from 6 to 22 years, seriously reducing the environmental impacts and safety risks at no significantly higher cost than would have been incurred with the continued operation of the existing pond. The results of the study are presented in this paper.

Longwall minim; is a highly mechanized, high productivity mining method that is finding increasing applications in coal. Although the method would be highly advantageous in certain hard rock mining applications it cannot be applied in hard rock because no suitable cutterhead exists for such materials. The wedge longwall cutterhead is a, roller cutter device that is wedge-shaped, with cutters arranged to eliminate the very large normal force ordinarily required to cause such cutters to penetrate hard rock. However, the wedge geometry cannot be extended to a point: special nose cutters are needed to open a narrow slot for the wedge. This report describes the design, fabrication, and successful field testing of these critical nose cutters.

AMONG the multifarious duties which fall to the lot of a mining engineer it is safe to say that there is none of more fundamental importance than the study of the ore-deposits on which it is thefunction of his profession to operate, inasmuch as the whole business of mining in all its complicated ramifications rests first of all on the existence of something to mine. -When the ore supplies in a mine fail, the enterprise comes to- an end, and nothing, therefore, is of more importance than a thorough understanding of the conditions under which the ore occurs, so that everything possible may be done to open up the mines well ahead of their immediate output requirements, and develop new ore reserves to take the place of that which is raised from day to day. The great aim which the mining engineer has to keep before him in his study of his ore-deposits is to obtain such a knowledge of them that he will have sound grounds for prediction as to how they will behave in parts of the mines which are well beyond the point of the pick. It is on his judgment of probabilities in this respect that mining operations are entered upon, and the more thorough his knowledge of all the factors affecting the problem, the more is the judgmentlikely to be a sound one. The test of any theory is experimental confirmation of the truth of predictions based upon it, and our aim should be to try to perfect our knowledge of the rules governing deposition of ores, so that our theories may prove themselves equal to the task of successful prediction.

INTRODUCTION The authors, by means of this paper, will attempt to show the role of Induced Polarization and Resistivity surveys in the discovery of the orebodies of Gibraltar Mines Limited (N.P.L.). In this paper, we will also attempt to show the importance of conducting large enough surveys in order to properly evaluate the results obtained from these surveys. LOCATION The orebodies of Gibraltar Mines Limited (N.P.L.) are located on the western slope of Granite Mountain, central British Columbia (52°30' north, 122°16' west) (See Fig. 1). The property lies approximately 28 miles north of Williams Lake, B.C. and can be reached by way of 10 miles of newly improved road from McLeese Lake, on the Cariboo Highway. The area in and around Gibraltar Mines has a moderate topographic relief with elevations between 3,500 and 4,100 feet. {EARLY HISTORY AND GEOLOGY The present Gibraltar Mines property before amalgamation consisted of the Pollyanna property (Duval-Canex) and the Gibraltar property (original Gibraltar Mines) as well as some Coast Silver and McLeese Lake Copper claims (See Fig. 2). The Pollyanna property was first described in the 1917 B.C. Minister of Mines Report which referred to it as the "Rainbow Group". The development at that time consisted of several open-cuts on copper bearing quartz veins.

Samples weighing 0·5 g are fused with potassium hydrogen sulphate, leached with 4 ml. of 4 M nitric acid and diluted to 10 ml. with water. An aliquot of the clear solution is treated with EDTA, adjusted with ammonia to give a pH value between 5 and 6 treated with cyanide, ammonia, and sodium diethyldithiocarbamate then bismuth diethyldithiocarbamate is extracted with chloroform and the yellow colour is compared visually with a standard series. Alternatively, the bismuth complex may be filtered on a "Millipore" filter and subjected to x-ray fluorescence spectrometry.

The effective coefficient for rate of reduction of a sample of granular iron ore may be determined by passing the reducing gas through a bed of the are at constant flow rate and periodically analyzing the effluent gas, The method of analyzing the data is based on a mathematical model that takes into account the variation in composition of the gas and solids with time and position in the bed. A method is described for determining the value of the rate coefficient that gives best agreement between the observed and calculated analyses of the effluent gas.

Gases rich in sulfur dioxide generated as a by-product of smelting and converting operations of copper concentrate contain selenium apart from zinc, lead, copper, cadmium, bismuth, antimony, and arsenic. The gaseous stream is heat exchanged in waste heat boiler, dust collected in electrostatic precipitator followed by cleaning in reverse jet scrubber to remove fumes, halogens and fine dust before passing to DCDA Monsanto catalytic converter to produce commercial grade sulfuric acid. The gas cleaning section of the acid plant uses water to scrub the smelting gases. During scrubbing, precipitated solids, known as sludge, settles at the bottom of the reverse jet scrubber containing 30 to 40 wt% copper and selenium up to 40 wt% selenium. In the existing process, the sludge collected during scrubber cleaning process is directly recycled to the smelter for copper recovery. However, the selenium is expected to again vaporize due to high oxidation potential during smelting and converting, causing accumulation of selenium in sludge. In present investigation, a roasting process has been developed to recover the selenium from acid plant sludge before charging it to smelter for copper recovery. Selenium is associated with copper in acid plant sludge as copper selenide, as determined by X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. Thermodynamic and thermo-gravimetry study revealed that the copper selenide phase present in the sludge was amenable to oxidation at 600°C forming oxides of copper and selenium (Cu-Se-O). However, the dissociation of selenium from the copper oxide was made possible by sulfatation using sulfur dioxide between 450°C to 600°C, resulting into the formation of CuSO4(s) and SeO2(g). Lab scale experiments were carried out in vertical tubular furnace to determine the optimum roasting conditions with respect to roasting time, temperature and molar ratio of O2:SO2. Using these optimum conditions, selenium up to 90 wt. % in the form of SeO2 vapors could be recovered from the acid plant sludge in a large scale commercial roaster. Roasted sludge free from selenium and containing oxides and sulfates of copper could now be recycled in the smelter for copper recovery. INTRODUCTION There is an increasing demand for minor metals due to their use in innovative technologies. Similarly, the increase in demand for selenium is expected due to disruption in sectors related to renewable energy and photovoltaic battery. Selenium is a chalcogen and a non-metal with black or red crystalline appearance. Selenium is used in the glass industry to decolorize glass and to make red-colored glasses and enamels. It is also used in solar cells and as a photographic toner. Selenium is used as a brasses in stainless steel to improve its machinability. Selenium sulfide is used in anti-dandruff shampoos. In spite of the toxicity of its compounds, selenium is also an essential trace element for humans and animals. Selenium occasionally occurs free in nature, but more often occurs as selenides of iron, lead, silver and copper. There is an urgent need for the development of new methods for selenium recovery from the existing resources. Commercially, selenium is obtained only from anode mud produced during electrolytic refinery of copper.

"A review of the current status of gasification technology shows that many engineering systems are immediately available for use in the gasification of coal. Widespread international experience can be brought to bear on the atmospheric pressure gasification of all Canadian coals.Unless a high ash content dictates the use of a fluid-bed gasifier, it appears that bituminous coals can be used in gravitating (fixed] bed systems and that the strongly caking coals are most suited to the high-pressure entrained-bed systems . Existing and developing technologies in fluid-bed gasification are attractive for reactive lignites and subbituminous coals.The Fischer-Tropsch based process is the only commercial embodiment of coal liquefaction; the use of Canadian coals in this process depends only on their gasification characteristics. Current developments in hydroliquefaction are directed toward carboniferous coals of medium or high rank. It is not clear that cretaceous coals of the same rank will give similar process yields and economics.IntroductionThe twin coal conversion processes of gasification and liquefaction have a history which dates back beyond the current energy shortages of the western world. Indeed, liquids and gas from coal were produced before this century.Coal gas produced from a coal carbonization process was originated before 1800, and the development of gasification of non-coking coals was patented by Siemens in 1860.This patent represented the first use of air and steam together in the gasmaking process. The pioneering development of coal gasification Using oxygen and steam was demonstrated by Lurgi in the late 1920s. This historical sequence was all carried out at atmospheric pressure, and it was not until the immediate pre-war (1939/45) years that operation of the coal gasification process at elevated pressure became a reality."

This study compares the wear resistance of specimens lubricated with biofluids or mineral oil. Tribological studies were performed by ball-cratering test. In these tests were used as lubricants epoxidized soybean oil, castor oil and mineral oil. The specimens used were untreated and nitrided AISI 4140, while a steel ball AISI 52100 was used as a counterbody. In order to analyze the results obtained, the worn volume was calculated and the characterization of the crater, after the test, was made using optical microscopy and SEM. Wettability was also measured for the different surface condition and lubricants. As expected both specimens showed a smaller volume worn when lubricated with mineral oil due to inherent properties of this type of lubricant. Among the vegetable oils studied, the castor oil showed a better performance in the lubrication of the specimens untreated while on the nitrided specimen have shown less wear when lubricated with epoxidized soybean oil, indicating a difference in the efficiency of oils, as lubricants, depending on the surface conditions of the mechanical components.

"Rod mills processing nickel and copper ore experienced recurring failures of liner bolts. In some cases failures became very frequent, requiring constant mill intervention and consequently impacting process stability and operating costs. Investigation related to the causes of bolt failures involved a multidisciplinary approach with the participation of engineering, maintenance and operation. It included the determination of bolt failure mechanisms as well as the assessment of mechanical properties, fabrication quality and handling and installation procedures. In addition, other parameters affecting bolt performance such as mill and liner design, operating parameters and maintenance practices were studied. This paper reports the failure investigation results and proposed solutions for failure prevention. INTRODUCTIONOccasional liner bolt failures are common in rod mills. However, chronic bolt failures developed in rod mills processing nickel and copper ore caused frequent shutdowns for bolt replacement to an extent that affected process stability. At first, it was thought that the cause of recurring failures was related to bolt quality. The operation then submitted several failed bolts to failure analysis. However, it became apparent that bolt quality was unlikely to be the main cause of failures. The determination of root cause (s) then became more complex, requiring a multi-disciplinary approach to failure investigation, requiring the assessment of bolt installation methods, mill design, operating conditions and maintenance practices. The results of the metallurgical failure analysis and investigation of other possible causes of failures are reported here."

Why is there such an increased thrust toward positive multiple use land management and where will it lead? History and purpose of the mining law of 1872. John Marshall discovered gold at Sutter?s mill near Coloma, California, on January 19, 1848, and utter chaos resulted. The great migration of people to the undeveloped western lands had begun. Prior to this discovery, copper, lead, and iron had been the minerals for which the laws were made. With this discovery of gold on the public domain, it became apparent that congressional legislation was necessary. This became even more apparent as each of the numerous mining districts which were springing up in California, and elsewhere in the west adopted local miners' customs to regulate their activities. Although these early miners acted under mining district rules and in some cases state regulations, they were, in reality, appropriating minerals without sanction of federal law.

In the pursuit of commercial solutions for environmental issues, individual problems are often identified, considered and resolved in isolation from other environmental matters and always at the end of the cycle û after the problem has been created. Inter-relationships are neglected if they are not seen to obviously impact on a specific problem and the issue at hand is plucked from the environmental landscape and dealt with in total isolation to all else. In a Zero Waste approach to environmental matters, all outputs are pursued as potential inputs. Industrial processes are viewed as a variation on natureÆs theme and opportunity pursued above all else. When viewed from this perspective, industry appears to have forgotten its origins. It has forgotten that it is principally about people. The juggernaut of global trade has forgotten that it is a small part of a big landscape and that its principal participants, people, cannot exist without healthy soil. Commercial activity in all parts of the world relies heavily on the ability of agriculture to produce the necessary inputs for industrial production. The care and nurturing of our soils is fundamental, not only to the survival of humanity, but also to the economic systems that support that humanity and to the industry which profits by it. Actual levels of domestic recycling in many countries around the world seldom reflect the 90 plus per cent desire to recycle recorded in surveys conducted by local authorities in almost every country. If the desire to recycle is far removed from the end result, why is it that the systems provided are so ineffective? It is obvious that what we do need is a recycling system that both engages and rewards the participant and stimulates the innate desire to support the environment. A recent trial in New South Wales, Australia, demonstrated that by giving individual households credits for recycling organic wastes, not only will contamination levels fall dramatically, but increased yields, improved soil structure, improved land values, reduced fertiliser costs and increased water use efficiency give the farmer good economic reasons for purchasing and applying quality composted product. By underpinning and securing the agricultural community, we secure the future of industry. The æCity to SoilÆ project linked the economic on-farm benefits of compost use with reduced contamination through the provision of rewards paid for by the purchase of product by the farmer.

The objective of the paper is to develop an understanding of the influence of caving on powered support rating by examining the geology and support performance at two sites which represent the current extremes in support rating, ie 6/240 Ton supports operating in the Hirst Seam at Solsgirth Colliery, Scotland, and 4/900 Tonne supports operating in the Bulli Seam, West Cliff Colliery, Australia. A conceptual model is introduced which considers the coal ahead of the face, the powered support, and the caved waste to be three yielding foundations which interact to control the subsidence of the roof strata. Different caving mechanisms are identified for the strata of the Hirst and Bulli Seams, ihese mechanisms being related to rock properties, ie to the palaeogeography and depositional conditions at each site, producing caved wastes with different yield characteristics. The results obtained for convergence and support reaction during production cycles at both sites are analysed to show the manner in which support reaction is developed, indicating the importance of high setting load densities in the Bulli Seam. Evaluation of the work done on the subsiding roof strata during typical production cycles by two of the yielding foundations, ie the powered support and the caved waste immediately behind the powered support, is used to further demonstrate the influence of caving mechanisms on support rating.
