"Porphyry copper deposits are the most important source of copper and also gold within the orogenic belts. These deposits are characterized by low grade copper ore (0.2% to 1% copper) and host precious metals like gold, silver and platinum. A characterization tool has been developed for complex porphyry type copper-gold deposits with an aim to quantify copper and precious metal deportment. This quantification is a challenging task due to low grades and also due to the presence of both visible and invisible precious metal content in different sulphide and non-sulphide phases. Studies were initiated on various complex ore deposits and also on samples representing various processing streams such as flotation and leach products. This paper presents the development of a systematic approach to diagnostic metallurgy using state-of-the-art optical and automated mineralogy, micro-probe, dynamic SIMS and TOF-SIMS analysis for quantification of invisible and visible precious metals content in various species. The relevance of this characterization to metallurgy will also be briefly discussed in this paper.INTRODUCTIONA novel characterization tool has been developed for double refractory gold ores and complex copper-gold ores using state-of-the-art technology for quantitative gold and copper deportment study. The characterization of these ores is a challenging task due to low copper and gold grades in ores, presence of both primary and secondary copper sulphide phases and variable proportion of visible and invisible gold in different sulphides phases (pyrite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bornite) and iron oxide phases (magnetite, hematite and goethite). A study was initiated on various ore deposits and also on samples representing various processing streams of pilot plant batches such as flotation concentrates and tailings. This paper attempts to discuss the deportment characterization methodology through presenting results from investigations on four samples from a flotation circuit viz, Feed, Final concentrate, Cleaner Scavenger Tail and Rougher Tail samples. These four samples represent the key streams for a typical copper-gold flotation flow sheet. The key objective of this investigation was to identify and quantify visible and invisible gold along with understanding the morphology and liberation of gold associated with various sulphides, Fe- Oxides and non-sulphide gangue species. In addition, the aim of this study was also to relate this mineralogical and gold deportment information to metallurgical performance."

Results of a complex three-seam interaction analysis in a western U.S. coal mine are presented. The physical situation simulated by the models represents the development of a set of entries underneath two previously mined seams with all three seams in proximity to each other. The layout and the geometry of the remnant pillars in the upper seams were nonuniform and not always directly superimposed over each other, creating a very challenging modeling problem. The U.S. Bureau of Mines' MULSIM/PC computer code was upgraded and enhanced to perform the required three-seam interaction calculations. Analysis was limited to simple linear-elastic assumptions as only peak stresses were required. Results clearly indicated that stress concentrations in the lower seam increased approximately 100 percent when compared to cases simulating no extraction in the two upper seams. These stress concentrations generally occurred in zones directly below points of highest abutment pressures in the upper seams. Overall, the model results compared favorably with actual documented observed behavior where roof failures were known to have occurred.

The use of cereal food materials as lubricants was investigated in an attempt to develop nonpolluting lubricants. Suspensions of wheat flour in water and other types of cereal food lubricants were prepared and their friction coefficients measured. The results indicate that a cereal food lubricant containing 30% lipids, 2% proteins, 60% carbohydrates and 0.6% calcium carbonates has the lowest friction coefficient for a sheet (cpTi-1). As example applications, the lubricant was tested with a forming press and a screw-fastening device. In both applications the cereal food lubricant performed relatively well in comparison to conventional lubricants and thereby has potential for practical applications.

Earlier work on a mud separator for barite recovery is extended to the design and construct ion of a rugged field unit. Problems associated with scale-up for field use include the me of dilution water and its effect on capacity, power requirements and pressures developed. Equations for these quantities are derived and applied in maximizing the beneficial effects of dilution and minimizing the power required. Tests on the full-size rotor show that its performance can be predicted by theory. The completed unit is compact and lighter than current decanting types. Its capacity is from 10 to 22 gal/min with corresponding barite recovery efficiencies of 92 to 86 per cent. INTRODUC'TION In an earlier publication a new type of centrifugal device was described for solid-liquid separations.l In that paper an operating equation was derived, and its validity demonstrated in laboratory scale experimentation. Some of the features apparent in this new device seem particularly well suited to the conservation of barite in field drilling-mud systems, hence the development was extended to the design and construction of a field unit. In the present paper the design problems associated with scale-up are considered. A full-scale, rugged self-contained field unit is described, and test results discussed which verify that the performance of the large field unit can be described by a simple operating equation. PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION OF SEPARATOR In principle, the new device is simply a perforated cylinder rotating within a body of fluid which is contained within a stationary case, as in Fig. 1. The frictional drag generated by the rotating cylinder causes part of the fluid to rotate. At the surface of the cylinder, assuming no slip occurs, the angular velocity of fluid and of the cylinder are identical. If there are suspended particles present of greater density than the fluid, the centrifugal force acting on these particles causes them to move radially away from the cylinder at some velocity vp . Where the Stokes settling equation holds, this velocity may be expressed as:2 d2 ?p rw2 If the case is provided with openings at both ends, a suspension can be pumped in at one end at a fixed rate. Part of the suspension can then be removed at a fixed rate at the other end of the case as underflow, and the remainder forced through the perforations and hollow shaft of the rotor to appear as effluent, also at a fixed rate. The radial component of the flow velocity of this stream as it reaches the rotor surface, is simply effluent flow rate divided by cylindrical surface area: Because up is a function of particle size, for some particular particle size, the velocities vp and v, will be equal in magnitude. This is defined as the critical particle size and represents the size above which all particles appear in the underflow and below which all particles appear in the effluent. "The property of Gaspe Copper Mines, Limited, is in the Gaspe Peninsula some 60 miles west of the town of Gaspe and 20 miles in from the north coast. The Copper Mountain deposit was first discovered in 1921 and first optioned and drilled by Noranda in 1938. The Upper Needle Mountain showings a mile south were found in 1938, but it was not until after a delay of 10 years that the more important deep ore at Needle Mountain was located by drilling. Production started in 1955, and the smelter commenced operation in December. Mining is by open stope methods with first production coming from the Lower Needle Mountain orebody, of which only a small portion has been exposed in underground openings.Stratigraphy and AlterationThe country rock is composed of limy siltstones of Devonian age. Away from alteration these are dark and generally carbonaceous. Throughout the drilled area numerous narrow layers of tuffaceous fragmental material occur, and such beds are found to provide excellent horizon markers by virtue of their uniform thickness and wide lateral distribution. These markers are valuable for stope control in mining the bedded replacement deposits.Intruding the sediments at Copper Mountain are porphyry dykes, and one drill hole encountered granite 1,400 feet below the valley. Solutions responsible for the rock alteration and ore deposits seem to have emanated from this intrusive centre.On the mine claims strong hydrothermal alteration has completely obscured the original character of the sediments. The unaltered formations are all very similar in appearance, but following alteration rocks that are very dissimilar in physical characteristics are produced, and such differences have an important influence on ore deposition. The alteration effects are known to extend over a vertical range in excess of 3,000 feet and have a surface area of two square miles. All known ore bodies are within the zone of alteration. In this, rocks are strikingly bleached to a white colour in contrast to the normal dark-coloured sediments, and are much harder and more abrasive, with bedding often obscured. The first effect of alteration is driving off of carbonaceous matter, followed progressively by silicification in the acid rocks and by the formation of lime silicates in the lime rocks, with an accompanying gain in silica and a corresponding loss in lime. Extensive analysis has shown that there is an actual addition of silica involved in the alteration."

Knowledge of the hydrogeological setting of a mine forms an integral part of a mining operation. Groundwater impacts, initially, on mine feasibility. Then, on commencement of mining, it interacts on the operational components of dewatering, water supply, tailings leachates, mine wall stability, stormwater run-off, water disposal, impact on regional environment and mine closure planning. The recording of hydrogeological information is frequently overlooked during resource and reserve definition as well as during the course of mining when prime opportunity exists for the collection and collation of this data. In recent times, the exclusion of hydrogeological data has been exacerbated by use of high air pressure drill rigs that exclude water inflow. The recording of water data has been further inhibited by the use of computer coded drill logs that do not include the site geologistÆs or drillerÆs comments on drilling problems and observations associated with groundwater intersections. Geologists now infrequently directly supervise drill rigs, but visit the rig only intermittently to evaluate drilling progress. They do not see first hand drill performance characteristics at water make zones. Drill cuttings, as drill chips and cores, are now mostly logged away from the drill site so that wet sample locations, visual water flow evidence and verbal comments from the driller are not recorded. As a result, mine geologists now do not direct adequate attention to the delineation of lithologies and structures that store and transmit water. This paper provides examples of water sighting and recording techniques applicable to a mining operation. Examples are also provided where hydrogeological conditions have been disregarded with serious impact on the progress of mining. The recording of hydrogeological data should be maintained and formatted by the site geologists into a useful database for review as and when required by specialists in hydrogeology, geotechnical and mining engineering and the environment. The information can be coded by the site geologist for inclusion into the mine database. A groundwater dataset, compiled during the progress of field investigations, will save the considerable cost of re-drilling and hole re-entry testing which would otherwise be required to provide base level hydrogeological information required for progress of mining. Apart from working mine use, a hydrogeological dataset is a necessary component for planning mining closure and mine legacy conditions.

"Nineteen streams in the copper and zinc flotation units of the concentrator of the Matagami division of Noranda Inc. have been sampled for particle size distributions chemical assays, and gold and silver contents in each particle size interval. The data are upgraded by the mass balance package BILMAT. These results, in conjunction with microprobe analyses, are used to quantify the silver losses in the copper clean¬ing flotation stages and to determine how overall silver and three silver-bearing minerals are recovered in the plant final products.RESUME Dix-neuf produits des circuits de flottation du cuivre et du zinc de la division Matagami de Noranda Inc. ont été échantillonnés pour leur distribution granulométrique, analyses chimiques et le contenu d'argent et d'or des fractions granulométriques. The objective of this study is to evaluate the metallurgical behaviour of silver, and secondarily of gold, in the flotation circuit for a possible increase of its recovery in the copper concentrate to improve its economic value. For that purpose it is worthwhile to study the minerals which bear silver and to determine the critical flotation stages where they are lost in the tails. The methodology proposed here is based on a coupling of a mineralogical study and a detailed mass balance calculation in the flotation circuit."

Scraper With over 40 pet more struck capacity than previous models, the new Caterpillar No. 90 scraper is designed to increase earthmoving production when used with D8 tractor power. This scraper moves dirt with the aid of a hard surfaced, reversible cutting edge. Material is carried in a flat, doublebottom bowl of high tensile steel. Operation is by means [ ] of a cable-control unit, which can be mounted on the rear of the tractor to provide for positive loading and ejection. Tapered roller bearings are installed at each axle. The scraper uses two 24.00 to 29 front tires and two 27.00 to 33 rear tires, all four of 24-ply rating. When loaded, the scraper distributes 60 pet of the weight on the rear tires. Circle No. 1

Single particle breakage tests have been used by a number of researchers to investigate some salient features of the complex comminution process. The characteristics of the common single particle breakage tests such as single impact, double impact and slow compression tests are examined and the results from these tests are compared. A comparison of the results from single particle breakage tests with grindability and ball mill tests is given. Application of the results from single particle breakage tests to modelling industrial comminution processes is described. The necessity for further research into single particle breakage tests to develop a simple but comprehensive technique for estimating the breakage characteristics of ores is discussed.

THE following notes simply sum up the writer's experience, which extended over a very busy period of some three years, dealing with wolfram ores and concentrates. The three methods for the estimation of tungsten that are discussed below are well known, but these results of their trials and comparison under technical conditions may be interesting. Method I. The routine procedure for the assay of rich wolfram ores or concentrates was as follows: Take 1 gram of finely-ground sample; digest with HCl and HNOs for about 2 hours, evaporating down to near dryness. To the remaining 5 cc., say, of liquid, add water, warm or boil for 1 to 1.5 hour, filter through a small filter paper, and wash the beaker and the insoluble matter with hot dilute HCl. It is best to keep the bulk of the insoluble matter (WOs, Si02, etc.) in the beaker at this stage. Then plaee a weighed porcelain dish under the filter funnel and wash the beaker and the filter paper with successive small quantities of strong NHOH, finally bringing all the insoluble matter on to the filter paper, and collecting the ammoniacal filtrates in the porcelain dish (S). Then place the filter paper with the insoluble matter in a porcelain crucible, dry and burn off the paper, cool, and brush the contents of the crucible on to an agate mortar, grind it to flour, and brush this back to the original beaker without loss. In the absence of draughts this can be done safely. Re-treat this residue with' acid and ammonia as above, running the second ammoniacal filtrate into the previous porcelain dish, which in the meantime has been heating on a water-bath.Finally evaporate to dryness on the water-bath the combined ammoniaeal filtrate, and then heat gradually to a red heat over a Bunsen burner, cool, and weigh. Then the contents of the porcelain dish give the WOs (tungstie aeid) direcvly (5).The final filter paper and insoluble matter may be ignited in a porcelain crucible, thus giving the "insoluble matter." The high temperature mechanical properties of stainless steels after fast neutron irradiation are discussed in the light of effects caused by lattice dattmage and effects caused by helium generated from n,a transmutations. Embrittlement at high temperatures is due to helium accumulation at grain boundaries and to cavity formation and proPagation along grain boundaries. Following from the embrittlement mechanism, it is suggested that when deformation occurs by mechanisms associated with super plasticity, helium ac-curnulation at boundaries should be attenuated and cavities, if formed, should be nonpropagating. As the mean free Path between interphase boundaries of a two-phase Fe-Cr-Ni alloy was decreased, the degree of superplastic deforrnation at 870°C increased, as vneaszired by total elongation and by the expottent m = a log 'a/a log 'i. This alloy and type 304 stainless steel were cyclotron irradiated in an a-particle beam to a helium concentration of -1 x 10 atom He per atom. The stainless steel specimen was embrittled, but the ductility of irradiated two-phase Fe-Cr-Ni alloys correlated with the values of. m during 'defor-malion. The .finest grained, helium-injected specimens that deforrned with highest m values exhibited the largest elongations to ,fracture. These results could be correlated with metallographic observations of cavity behavior: the propensity for intergranular propagation was lessened as the m value increased. It is concluded that superplastic deformation is ef-fectizle in attenuating helium embrittlement at elevated temperatures. One of the principal problems associated with development of fast breeder reactors is application of alloys such that suitable fuel cladding results. Stainless steels and other Fe-Cr-Ni alloys, because of highly acceptable nuclear characteristics, represent the primary materials for this component, and an exhaustive research and development effort is being conducted. The main deficiency of these materials has been a severe loss of ductility at high temperatures after fast neutron irradiation. An extensive body of mechanical property data and microstructural observations has provided an adequate phenomenological description of embrittlement; in conjunction with transmission electron microscopy studies, a reasonably acceptable embrittlement mechanism has been obtained. Following from this mechanism, it is suggested in the present work that ductility would be enhanced if deformation could occur by mechanisms associated with the phenomenon of superplasticity. Experiments to test this hypothesis have been conducted, and the results are presented and discussed in this paper. IRRADIATION EMBRITTLEMENT AT HIGH TEMPERATURE Austenitic stainless steels have been irradiated to accumulated fast neutron fluences of 1020 to 1022 nvt at temperatures between 60" and 600°C. Specimens that have been exposed to these conditions and subsequently tensile tested at temperatures between 600" and about 900°C exhibit approximately 5 pct total elongation to fracture.'-3 For unirradiated specimens receiving a nearly identical thermal exposure, total elongation at these test temperatures is about 45 pct. Examination of irradiated specimens has shown that fracture propagation is entirely intergranular. These phenomenological aspects of irradiation embrittle-ment at elevated temperatures are well known and are not generally disputed. Although the explanation of this phenomenon has been controversial, a mechanism for ernbrittlement has emerged that accounts reasonably well for the observed mechanical behavior. The controversy resulted primarily from an indeterminate role of neutron-in-duced lattice damage, if any, and a presumed, but experimentally unverified, contribution to embrittle-ment from helium generated by n,a transmutations. Recently, Holmes and coworkers4 have conducted experiments that separate these effects, and the results are instructive in formulation of the ernbrittlement mechanism. Holmes el al.4 irradiated type 304 stainless steel in EBR-I1 to a fluence of 1.4 x 1022 nvt (E > 0.18 mev); the irradiation temperature was 538" * 48°C or, in terms of absolute melting point, 0.49 * 0.03 T,. After irradiation, tensile tests were conducted at temperatures of 21" to 870.C, the specimens first being annealed for 30 min at each test temperature. In addition, thin sections of irradiated specimens were annealed for 1 hr at identical temperatures, electro and examined by transmission electron microscopy. Thus, for a given temperature, it was possible to correlate mechanical properties with the defect structure. At room temperature, the yield stress of irradiated specimens was a factor of 2.5 higher than unirradi-ated specimens exposed to an equivalent thermal history. Electron microscopic examination of the irradiated specimen revealed a high density of lattice damage in the form of Frank sessile dislocation loops and polyhedral voids. Holmes et al.4 concluded that the presence of this defect substructure caused the increase in yield stress and that after irradiation in a fast neutron flux at 0.49 Tm, substantial lattice dam-age persists. The Bureau of Mines used regression analysis and applied statistical methods in an effort to rationalize the results of an experiment examining the effects of certain variables on carbon deposition in a reservoir for thermal recovery of petroleum. Although none of the 15 trials of the original experiment resulted in the response of weight-percent of carbon regarded by the experimenter as adequate, values calculated using canonical analysis in two trials yielded responses 33 and 54 percent higher than the minimum acceptable figure. The actual responses differed by less than 3 and 6 percent, respectively, from the predicted responses. Methods are described for defining a path of increasing response based on the minimum point and the response surfaces and for defining a set of values for the parameters in question, which result in increased response, A detailed explanation of the mathematical process used in this analysis is presented in the appendix for ease in computer programing the technique.

"INTRODUCTION An inherent aspect of any tunnelling project is ground risk: how it is identified, quantified and managed throughout the various stages of a project. Early identification of these risks, such as adverse ground conditions or potential obstructions is crucial; however specific identification of all risks will inevitably be limited by the extent of the desk study, ground investigation and accuracy of as-built information available, particularly in a densely populated urban environment such as London with a long and varied history of development. It is therefore crucial to have suitable plans and procedures in place for dealing with potential ground risk scenarios if they occur during construction work to ensure the safety of the workforce and to protect nearby critical assets. A number of experiences of potential ground risk were encountered during the Sprayed Concrete Lining (SCL) works on Crossrail contract C300/410 which was constructed by a joint venture of BAM Ferrovial Kier (BFK). The C300/410 works, undertaken in the heart of London, comprised of over 2.5km of SCL tunnels for Bond Street and Tottenham Court Road Stations and the Fisher Street crossover, as well as two 6.2km TBM tunnel drives between Royal Oak and Farringdon. BFK appointed Donaldson Associates as their SCL designers for the works; together they were responsible for excavation stability up to the point of ring closure. Despite the majority of SCL tunnelling works at Bond Street and Tottenham Court Road being through the favourable medium of London clay, there remained areas of local geotechnical challenges. Some of these were expected from the outset, some became apparent as works progressed from records of other nearby excavation works, and some were only encountered during tunnel excavation. Being located in the centre of London meant that there always remained a possibility of meeting some form of obstruction from previous structures. However, identification of all potential issues prior to the commencement of the works was challenging and proved to not be entirely possible. Through a series of case studies, this paper documents incidents where obstructions or adverse ground conditions arose. These scenarios all had the potential to cause safety risks, impact the tunnel design and/or construction methods and ultimately add time and cost to the works. The paper discusses how these challenges were overcome which utilised in part, a progressive risk reduction cycle, feeding back knowledge gained at all stages of construction into the approach for undertaking the works. It also examines what could be done in future to further reduce the ground risk through early identification, communication, education and appropriate contingency measures."

On a worldwide basis trackbound transportation is on the decline. As mining operations progress from open cast operations to underground operations, most utilise mechanised equipment. However, in South Africa hard rock mines, only a small percentage (¦10 per cent) of the production can be generated by mechanised methods and therefore trackbound mining methods will remain the dominant means to transport ore. In the Australian context there may be occasions where the nature of the orebody would dictate the use of rail transportation with the ore being transported from drawpoints by means of locomotives and hoppers. This paper focuses on horizontal rail haulage systems from the stope loading boxes to the shaft station area and will be largely based on South African experience. It is intended that this document will provide a practical guideline for mine designers and planners during the design process. The paper looks at trackbound transport systems and evaluates such items as construction and management of an underground rail haulage system. Current transportation systems for personnel, material and rock transportation are evaluated, gaps in technology highlighted, and recommendations made.

The development of new techniques in mineral exploration seems to reduce the need of geological field work and mapping: Data collection can now be done remotely by satellites, drones, and tablet-equipped field assistants, while the geologist assembles data sets with 3D software. The interpretation of complex data sets can be assisted by machine learning and artificial intelligence (ML, AI). Instead of loosing relevance, geological mapping and logging are now even more essential to provide the interpretive framework essential for the correlation, validation, and integration of huge amounts of data, but will not be replaced by new technologies. Geological truthing lies in the field, with experienced geologists conducting this work while training and mentoring young professionals.

Project evaluations of mineral deposits are necessary for mineral rights, owners and investors alike. A feasibility study provides a definitive technical, environmental and commercial base and is the key element leading to a decision to invest or not to invest. For example, the study may be used to justify further exploration and development expenditure or to provide a basis for a major underwriting to raise the required capital. There are three distinct phases in the development of a project and the type of study will differ depending on the quality of information available or the level of decision to be made. This paper looks at these three phases in the development of a mineral project and the type of study required; namely, a scoping study, prefeasibility, and a full feasibility study. Durante os reparos gerais nos conversores LD da CSN, as atividades de refratamento como demolição a quente, troca das ventaneiras, montagem do canal de vazamento e montagem do revestimento de trabalho e permanente, fazem parte do caminho critico do cronograma e são diretamente responsáveis pela dinâmica do evento. A montagem do canal de vazamento demandava uma série de atividades que exigiam maior tempo para execução e suporte para atividades em espaço confinado. Este trabalho apresenta sinergia entre fornecedores e diversas áreas envolvidas na montagem do canal de vazamento, onde a metodologia empregada resultou em redução no tempo de execução da atividade, disponibilidade da mão de obra e segurança operacional.

During past years the most difficult problem presented to the coal preparation engineer has been the cleaning of fine coal, The problem of handling fine coals is more involved than the coarser sizes, because the higher surface moisture contents complicate screening, and the larger percentages of fine near size material complicate separating problems. Low gravity high capacity specific gravity separations were not possible with equipment available at that time. Coal preparation engineers did develop machines that would effect a separation of the fines, however, to maintain a high efficiency, the point of separation had to be a relatively easy one. The more difficult separations were made in the coarse coal sections of the washeries, and the fines were generally cleaned at higher specific gravities in equipment such as tables, feldspar jigs, rheolaveurs, etc. Clean products from both processes were mixed, resulting in overall lower ash contents, During the last several years, however, we have been confronted with increasing demands ZGP more precise separations of finer coals to still further reduce ash contents. A study was begun and a program instigated to improve the cleaning of fine coal, The result of this endeavor was the development of the new cycloidal heavy medium cyclone.
