Vermiculite is the commercial name used to describe a micaceous mineral that expands appreciably when heated. This process, called exfoliation, results in a light weight material. The light weight material is also called vermiculite, or more exactly, expanded vermiculite. Practically all uses of vermiculite are for the expanded material. Composition and Properties Vermiculite, in its natural state, has the characteristic micaceous habit and a perfect basal cleavage and readily splits into thin laminae, which are soft, pliable, and inelastic. The monoclinic crystal faces are often marked by triangular lines at 60° and 120°. The hardness varies from 1.5 to 2 or more, depending on the composition. The specific gravity varies from 2.2 to 2.7; specific heat 0.2; fusion temperature 2,000° to 2,500°F; luster pearly to greasy; color amber, bronze, brown, dark green, and black. Feel is like talc and sometimes soapy when wet. When heated quickly at elevated temperatures, vermiculite exfoliates by expanding at right angles to the cleavage into long wormlike pieces (the name vermiculite is from the Latin vermiculari, to breed worms). This important characteristic of expansion is believed to be a mechanical separation of the layers when the contained water is converted to steam. The increase in bulk volume of commercially prepared material is 8 to 12 times, but individual flakes may expand as much as 30 times. There is no expansion parallel to the cleavage. Vermiculite may also be expanded by several chemical processes such as soaking in hydrogen peroxide, weak acids and other electrolytes. The color changes during expansion. Heat-treated material changes to a light golden bronze or cream color depending on composition. The conditions of heating affect color. Heating in an oxidizing atmosphere produces reddish colors and heating in a reducing atmosphere produces dull gray colors. The iron is generally not oxidized during chemical expansion. Vermiculite is hydrated magnesium-aluminum silicate. Although there has been much research on the chemical and structural composition, there is not yet complete agreement on the exact formula and composition. This is to be expected since vermiculite is not a mineral of fixed composition and different workers have examined different varieties. It has been proposed that vermiculite is not a single species but a family of related minerals. This has also resulted in many names for the particular vermiculite found in a certain deposit. All of this difficulty arises from the very nature of its crystal chemistry. Unlike most minerals, certain crystal structure properties and the chemical composition can be changed by the ordinary forces of nature or in the laboratory. This would suggest that vermiculite be thought of more as a variable mineral rather than a group of related species. It was stated on page 261 of this volume in the chapter on Clay Minerals by H. H. Murray of the Georgia Clay Co., that vermiculite is an equidimensional, expandable clay mineral. Gruner (ref. 14, Chap. 12) showed that the structure consists of a layer made up of two silica tetrahedral sheets with a central magnesium, iron octahedral sheet separated by two layers of water molecules and adsorbed magnesium and calcium ions. Hanna has developed three production planning systems to help the mine engineers determine the sequence of mining from available ore supples. The Production Scheduling System was developed to give the staff a tool for long range planning by sequencing the removal of blocks from an open pit property. It was needed to determine the year of removal for each block so that the optimum present-valued pit limits could be established by our pit design program. Since in this type of planning short term grade control is less of a factor than it is in daily or monthly planning, the system gives the program greater control and more latitude in block selection. It permits only full blocks to be taken.

Carbonaceous gold ores containing gold dispersed in sulfides are refractory to cyanidation because: ( 1) the carbonaceous materials adsorb gold during cyanidation; (2) a portion of the gold is so finely dispersed in the sulfide mineral lattice as to preclude contact with cyanide solution; and (3) a portion of the gold is chemically combined with carbonaceous material. Techniques which have been used to treat these ores are: (1) roasting or chemical oxidation to decompose sulfides and carbonaceous materials; (2) flotation to reject carbon; (3) the use of kerosene or other reagents to passivate the adsorptive carbon compounds; (4) carbon or resin in pulp; (5) flotation of a bulk concentrate which is treated by one of the above methods; and (6) the use of chelating agents which have a stronger affinity for gold than the activated carbon in the ore.

Chromium green is an essential metal with various applications in the paints, construction, electronics, and aerospace industries. The main source of chromium green is the carbo-thermic reduction of chromite ores, however, chromite ores are being heavily depleted on a global scale, hence the need to find alternative or secondary sources for the chromium. In order to meet the global demand for chromium there is a need to implement principles of the sustainable circular economy to keep chromium within the material loop. Ferrochrome slag and stainless steel slags are secondary resources that are potential sources of chromium. In this work, recovery of chromium from ferrochrome slag was investigated. The ferrochrome slag was alkaline leached using sodium hydroxide- sodium hypochlorite solution to reduce the use of potent reagents that have a potential negative environmental impact. The leachate produced by oxidative alkaline leaching of ferrochrome slag contained hexavalent chromium, which was used to recover the extracted chromium through a two-stage process involving reduction and precipitation. Reduction of hexavalent Cr to trivalent Cr was investigated using anhydrous FeSO4 at concentrations of 5 g/L, 10 g/L, and 15 g/L. Precipitation was conducted by dosing the reduced leach solution with 1 M sodium hydroxide at dosages of 5 ml/L, 10 ml/L, and 15 ml/L. The experiments were designed using the Taguchi (L9) orthogonal array and analysed according to the ANOVA, general linear model. The optimized conditions for the reduction step were ferrous sulfate dosage of 5 g/L with a pH of 12, and for the precipitation step, 1 M sodium hydroxide at a dosage of 15 ml/L with a setting time of 90 minutes and pH of 7. Physical changes were observed during the two-step chromium recovery, with solution changing from a yellowish colour to dark green colour indicating completion of the reaction. The chromium recovery was found to be 93.3%.

"Electroless plating process has been used in many fields such as automobile and electronic industries. Solutions used in these processes must be disposed or treated. Commonly, in these solutions metal ions, organic materials and others chemicals are in very high concentration. It is very difficult to keep the environmental regulations for disposal of these materials, and the cost of the plating process becomes higher.The objective of this study was to investigate the recovery of components of those baths in order to decrease the cost of the plating process as well as to meet the environmental regulation.In this study the recovery metal ions, sulfate ions, phosphite ions and organic compounds were investigated. Organic compounds used in electroless plating solutions are the organic acids. In this work the solvent extraction of the most used organic acids included citric, lactic, succinic, tartaric and malic was studied. The solvent phase considered in these studies was ethyl acetate.About 95% of the metal ion was recovered by chemical plating onto mica powder. The hypophosphite remained is oxidized to phosphite and with the sulfate ion, both are recovered as calcium salts by selective precipitation in pH 7 and 2 respectively. Organic acids were recovered by solvent extraction using ethyl acetate as solvent phase and the best results were for lactic acid and succinic acid.Along with this study, was developed the analytical parameters to perform wastewater analysis by using Ion Chromatography, High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Fourrier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Ion chromatography was used to perform analysis of sulfate and phosphite ions in liquid matrix, HPLC was used to perform analysis of organic acids in liquid matrix and FTIR was used for characterization of the solids obtained in the recovery processes."

"Grinding simulators are now widely available to assist in the optimization of industrial circuits. They provide circuit operating conditions or flowsheet designs that yield a given product size distribution. However, they do not provide information of the impact of a change of product size distribution on the subsequent flotation or leaching stages. This paper presents a method to predict grade and recovery indices for a flotation plant as a function of the flotation feed size distribution. The application of the method to various size distributions allows the determination of the optimal fineness of grind. A case study for a CuPb rougher circuit of a New Brunswick complex sulphide processing plant is presented to illustrate the method.IntroductionIs the grinding circuit product fineness optimum for the subsequent separation steps? This is a question that is certainly very difficult, but critical, to answer. Laboratory and pilot plant testworks can provide clues as to whether grind should be finer or coarser. For a full scale operation there is no other way than trying to change the setup of the grinding circuit and verify the effect on flotation. True effects can, however, be masked by the numerous and unexpected disturbances inherent to grinding and flotation circuit operations. A good preliminary investigation requires a noise free environment to elaborate possible solutions for the question.Plant simulators provide this noise free environment. However, despite grinding and flotation simulators having evolved significantly for the last 20 years, very little is available on the integration of both simulators to analyze the effect of fineness of grind on metallurgical performances. For instance, a grinding circuit simulator may help to find the tuning of a grinding circuit that will yield the desired fineness of grind, but does not inform on the effect the new product size distribution will have on the separation stages. Linking grinding and flotation would require a flotation plant simulator with the rate and infinite recovery parameters for each mineral in each size interval considered. This approach is seldom used because of the tedious work required to estimate the model parameters. Recently Leroux(1992) proposed a method to predict mineral liberation from grinding ore of known mineralogical texture. Although the method is still at its infancy it may provide, when combined with a reagent conditioning model (e.g Niemi et al., 1982; Bazin et al., 1988), a way to simulate flotation without the need of entering the numerous parameters of a flotation model."

A new sensor based sorting system related to complex image analysis has been developed at Comex AS - Norway. It makes it possible to separate different mineral particles regarding their color, shape, texture, size, density and indirectly their composition. The sorting system has been successfully tested and applied for sorting minerals providing high separation efficiency in the range of 95-99.9 %. The main advantage of this system is connected with its universality where many material parameters are analyzed in the same processing unit by a single passage.

THE legislatures of New York and New Jersey, determined in 1919 that a vehicular tunnel should be built under the Hudson River. On July 1, 1919, an engineering staff was organized with the late Clifford M. Holland as chief engineer, and this staff was given a number of problems to solve, such as location, size, type of tunnel, method of construction, method of ventilation and cost. After a period of preliminary investigations and studies it was decided to build the tunnel at Canal St., New York, connecting 12th St., Jersey City. This is the center of the heaviest traffic across the Hudson River. It was also decided to build two tunnels-one for west-bound traffic and one for east-bound traffic-the tunnels to be of cast iron, built up of segments and bolted together, each tunnel to have a roadway 20 ft. wide and a clear heat room of 13 ft., 6 in. This is to provide for two lines of vehicles in each direction. The tunnels have an exterior diameter of 29 ft., 6 in. The interior lining is of concrete, the sidewalls tiled with a vitreous white tile and the roadways paved with granite block. The entrances and exits at both ends are separated by two blocks so as to reduce traffic congestion.

With unprecedented worldwide growth and increasing global demand for energy expected to swell by 60 per-cent in the next two decades, mining matters as much now, if not more, than it ever has. This was the consensus at the 110th Annual National Western Mining Conference presented by the Colorado Mining Association, Feb. 12-14 at the Westin Hotel in Denver, CO. The role of coal ? America?s most abundant energy source ? the future of uranium and its possible resurgence in the energy marketplace, the skyrocketing value of gold as well as the issues of health, safety, climate change, legislation and government?s role in mining were all discussed during the three-day conference that operated under the banner of ?Mining Matters.? Barbara Filas, chairperson of the 110th National Western Mining Conference, president of Knight Piesold Co. and former SME president, welcomed the record crowd with an inspiring speech in which she pointed out that although ?most normal folks don?t know what role mining plays in their everyday life, mining does matter. ?Our industry,? she said, ?matters to Colorado. It matters to Colorado because it is a $3-billion industry. It matters to the 13,000 people who are employed directly or indirectly by the industry and it matters to schools that receive more than half of the royalties that are generated by mining.? During discussions of mining?s place in Colorado, the western United States and the world, special attention was paid to coal, uranium and the future of energy. ?It is time to rethink our perceptions about coal,? said Mark A. Smith, president and chief executive officer of Chevron Mining Inc. He spoke during the opening reception in a presentation titled, ?Coal to Liquids: Bridging America?s Energy Gap.? Although coal is America?s most abundant, and cheapest energy source, it is also one of the most scrutinized because of the pollution it causes and recent, and heavily publicized, tragedies that have claimed the lives of some who mine it.

RECENT studies by Smith and Olney,1,2 Olney,3 Greifer and Salli,4 Rys etal., and Olney and smith 6 have established that graphite is the first decomposition product to format the surface of hypereutectoid plain-carbon steels when they are austenitized in a vacuum or inert atmosphere and slowly cooled. This graphite evidently forms directly from the austenite and only at the surface of the specimen. The interior of the specimen is found to be free of graphite. The graphite layer can almost completely cover the specimen surface and the rate of its formation is markedly sensitive to the orientation of the austenite. The present work was undertaken to study this phenomenon further, especially with regard to the effect of temperature and austenite orientation. The material studied in this work was a high-purity iron-carbon alloy containing 0.88 pct C, 0.005 pct Mn, 0.016 pct Si, 0.005 pct S, and 0.002 pct P. Specimens were heat-treated in a commercial hot stage modified for rapid quenching.7 This permitted direct observation of the formation of the surface graphite. A vacuum of 10"" to 10-5 mm of Hg prevented oxidation or decarburization of the specimens. Specimens were austenitized for 30 min at 1100°C and quenched to a series of lower temperatures where they were isothermally transformed. Surface graphite was observed to form at 700°, 750°, and 780°C but not at 825°, 900° or 1000°C. The Bureau of Mines Helium Field Operations has developed a simple and accurate method for calculating the viscosity of gas mixtures. Only the composition of the mixture and the molecular weights and viscosities of the pure components in the mixture are required. The momentum fraction of a mixture is calculated from the composition. The fluidity is calculated as a quadratic function of the momentum fractions. The efficiency factor for transfer of momentum in collisions between bodies of different masses is derived and used with one empirical constant. The viscosity is the reciprocal of the fluidity. Results of the method are compared with 752 reported viscosities for 40 dilute binary systems at temperatures from -78 to 276.9°C. Using this method the average absolute deviation is 1.29%, the root-mean-square deviation is 1.99%, and the average deviation is -0.84%.

The following brief observations on the mineral composition of the Mt. Oxide copper ore are intended to supplement the geological description of that ore-body recently published by Blanchard (2).'" The Mt. Oxide copper mine is situated about 45 miles W.N.W. of Dobbyn, in the Cloncurry district of Queensland (Fig. 1). A representative suite of specimens from the mine was obtained through the kindness of Mr. P. B. Nye, Executive Officer of the Aerial, Geological and Geophysical Survey of Northern Australia, and Mr. Jack Hall, the tributor of the Mt. Oxide mine. The specimens, as shown in Fig. 2, were nearly all from the sulphide zone, between the l04-ft. level and the 300-ft. level. INTRODUCTION The mine hoisting equipment that is selected and installed at a mine is for the lifetime of the mine and, therefore, it is extremely important that a proper choice be made. Several types of mine hoist designs, including double drum hoists, single drum hoists, friction hoists, and various special designs of these, are available to¬day. Each has advantages and disadvantages and they should only be used in suitable applications. Drive systems for mine hoists must be evaluated together with the mechanical systems for each hoist application. It does not make sense to properly select the hoist mechanical system and then choose a drive system that turns out to be a bottleneck. MINE HOIST TYPES There are two basic types of mine hoists available in the world today: the drum hoist, on which the hoist rope is actually stored during the hoisting cycle, and the friction (Koepe) hoist, which merely passes the rope over the wheel during the hoisting process. Drum Hoists Single Drum Hoist: A single drum hoist (shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1) can be used as a service or production hoist with the cage or skip in balance with a counterweight (Figs. 2 and 3). It can efficiently service one or more levels, since the location of the counterweight at any time is not important. As a pro¬duction hoist with skips in balance, the single drum hoist is best used for single level hoisting. All rope adjustments for proper spotting must be done manually for the single drum hoist. This has to be done periodi¬cally to compensate for rope stretch. A variation of the single drum hoist is the divided drum hoist. If multilayer winding is necessary, the single drum hoist must have a divider to allow a sep¬arate compartment for each rope. If a counterweight is used with a divided drum application, the counter¬ weight rope can be wound on a smaller diameter (Fig. 4). Consequently, it moves a lesser distance than the main conveyance and rope adjustment problems are re¬duced. Double Drum Hoist: A double drum hoist in oper¬ation is shown in Fig. 5. Double Drum Hoist With One Drum Clutched: As a service hoist with cage and counterweight, a double drum hoist with one drum clutched (Fig. 6) can serve several levels efficiently. The advantage of having the clutched drum is that it allows rapid adjustment of ropes due to initial stretch. Some users may prefer the single drum hoist with manual rope adjustment, while others consider the added expense of the second drum and clutch is justified to make rope adjustments quickly. The value of this feature for a particular application should be discussed with the hoist manufacturer. As a production hoist with skips in balance for a multi¬level operation, the clutch can be adjusted for efficient hoisting from any level. Double Drum Hoists with Both Drums Clutched: There are also double drum hoists that have both drums clutched (Fig. 7). The main advantage claimed for this type of hoist is that if something happens in one of the two compartments, the hoist can operate in the other compartment to raise and lower men and sup¬plies. This feature is particularly favorable if there is only one shaft entrance to the mine. Multiple Drum Hoist: The multiple drum hoist, a South African innovation, is a type of drum hoist about which everyone should be aware. Basically, it uses two hoist ropes per conveyance which at great depths per¬mits use of smaller ropes and smaller drums. There are none in use in the United States today. However, they should be considered in very deep mines. Friction (Koepe) Hoists This hoist (Fig. 8) was introduced to the mining world by Frederick Koepe in 1877. Three titanium alloys, known to provide a mechanically unstable p structure after quenching, were selected as material for a study of the Origin and nature of stress-induced transformation. Data from hardness and tensile tests were used to study the initiation of marten site and the effect of the transfornation and transformation products on the mechanical properties of B titanium, particularly the stress-strain relationships. With the exception that the materials investigated showed a natural aging reaction in the P condition, their behavior is analogous to that of' stress-transforming stainless steels. The transformation starts after initial yielding and is essentially complete just prior to .maximum loading. Once initiated, the martensite itself is capable of propagating the transformation. The deforn-ing materials show low strength, high ductility, and a high strain-hardening exponent. In metallic systems which undergo a diffusionless transformation on cooling, it is possible to produce a similar transformatiorl by plastic deformation under special conditions. Dewez' in delineating Ms temperatures for the titanium-rich end of most titanium binary systems:, established the point of intersection of Ms with room temperature for those particular alloys. Alloy compositions which would quench to mechanically unstable p were established from these data. The first investigation into the possibility of stress-induced transformation occurring in titanium met with little success. It was concluded that such a transformation in titanium was possible only under very special conditions. Continued effort in this direction, however, showed certain Ti-Mo binaries to be highly susceptible to this phenomenon. This fact was utilized by Liu to study the habit planes of martensite and by Machlin and wenig5 to study the effects of stress and plastic deformation on the P to a prime transformation in titanium alloys. The first investigation of the mechanical properties of these alloys was conducted by Holden and his coworkers at Battelle Memorial Institute.' The potentiality of the alloys i3s sheet-forming material was recognized, and the data reappeared in a survey of this type of titanium material.? The initial optimism was tempered by the difficulties in obtaining homogeneous 2i-Mo alloys in commercial-size ingots. The increasing need for good sheet-forming material kept investigation in this direction active, resulting in the development of a commercial alloy of this type.' This study was undertaken to obtain a clearer picture of the mechanism of stress-induced transformation in titanium. MATERIALS AND TEST PROCEDURE Three alloys were selected for this investigation: one a Ti-Mo alloy; another a Ti-Cr-Mo alloy, known to deform martensitically; and the third, a Ti-V alloy with an Ms below room temperature and an Md above room temperature, but known to contain w phase in the quenched condition. The compositions of these alloys are given in Table I. These alloys were cast as 5-lb experimental ingots, employing skull melting. The ingots were hot-forged into 1-in.-round bars. Two 72-in.-thick slices were cut from each bar for hardness testing; the remainder was cut into 0.252-in. tensile blanks. The tensile blanks and one hardness disc from each bar were heated in salt to a temperature 100°F above the 0 transus, held 2/2 hr, and brine quenched. X-ray analysis showed the pieces to be 100 pct 8.* *Omega cannot be distinguished from p by the technique employed. Tensile blanks were machined to size after this treatment. The separation of certain minerals by electrostatic techniques can be difficult due to their similar electrical conductivity, and any technique to improve this can be useful in certain difficult separation applications. Triboelectric differences between mineral scan result in certain minerals acquiring small positive or negative charges prior to inductive electrostatic separation. By changing the polarity of inductive separation, relative changes in mineral recovery can be observed, which may be beneficial. In this brief study a JKTech mineral liberation analyser (MLA) was used to evaluate the effect of polarity change on selected minerals present in the Richards Bay Minerals deposit, and an approximate triboelectric series based on this behaviour is presented.

In this paper two optional production processes are presented for reasonable utilization of primary sylvinite in Qinghai province, China. The two kinds of products as chlorine-free potash fertilizers; potassium sulphate or potassium magnesium sulphate can be obtained. In the course of potassium sulphate production, using primary sylvinite from Qinghai salt lake as raw material with impurities such as sodium chloride and insoluble in primary sylvinite, it must be prepared by flotation before being converted into potassium sulphate. This final product has found wide use in tobacco industry in China. However, in some cases Chinese farmers would rather buy the fertilizer of potassium magnesium sulphate than high quality of potassium sulphate. With flotation process which is a little different from above mentioned, the potassium magnesium sulphate fertilizer may be produced by washing one of the flotation concentrate presented as picromerite, while another concentrate containing potassium chloride is treated as by-product.
