O alumínio e suas ligas por apresentarem uma série de vantagens, são largamente utilizados em diversas aplicações. O que mais reduz o campo de sua aplicação é sua baixa resistência mecânica, porém esta pode ser modificada através da adição de determinados elementos de liga e de processamentos termomecânicos adequados. Este trabalho teve como objetivo estudar a evolução microestrutural de uma liga de alumínio 7475-T7351 processada por laminação cruzada, e posteriormente submetida ao tratamento térmico de recozimento a 500ºC para recristalização, com tempos de encharque de 15, 30, 60 e 120 minutos. De acordo com os resultados apresentados, pode-se observar que a completa recristalização ocorreu entre os tempos de 30 a 60 minutos de encharque no tratamento térmico.

El Salto de Miranda es una obra de gran envergadura que aumentará la producción de energía eléctrica al norte de Asturias; ya que con la industrialización, se efectúa el nacimiento de empresas gigantes como la ENSIDESA de Avilés y por ende, se requieren de grandes cantidades de fluido eléctrico. En este sentido, el presente texto describe el proceso de este recórd a través de un concurso promovido de los diversos frentes de los túneles del Salto de Miranda de la Hidroeléctrica del Cantábrico, obteniendo el récord europeo en perforación de túneles y lograr que el personal del frente "Batán B" desarrolle un avance de 25.10 m. en una sola jornada laboral dle 24 horas de trabajo.

In the last years, supported gold catalysts with particle sizes smaller than 10 nm have attracted a lot of attention. While gold bulk metal is rather inert in chemical reactions and, thus, is of low interest for catalysis, highly dispersed gold particles supported on oxides as TiO2 or ZrO2 show surprisingly high activities in some reactions important for the chemical industry. The oxidation of carbon monoxide at low temperatures is mainly used as model reaction to study the unusual properties of gold catalysts [1]. On the other hand, to evaluate the catalytic potential of gold, other chemical reactions which allow to control also the selectivity have to be considered. The selective hydrogenation of ???-unsaturated aldehydes to allylic alcohols is of both commercial relevance (e.g. in fine chemical and pharmaceutical intermediate production) and specific scientific interest [2]. Note that thermodynamics favors hydrogenation of the C=C over the C=O group (stronger negative free reaction enthalpy of 35 kJ/mol), and for kinetic reasons the C=C bond is more reactive than the C=O group. Thus, in the presence of most of the conventional hydrogenation catalysts, based on Pt, Rh or Pd, -unsaturated aldehydes such as acrolein and crotonaldehyde are hydrogenated predominantly to the saturated aldehydes and only to a minor extent to unsaturated alcohols. Therefore, it is desirable to find catalysts which are able to control the intramolecular selectivity by hydrogenation preferentially the C=O group while keeping the olefinic double bond intact (Fig. 1).

Most primary-molybdenite producers use a selective-flotation process in which molybdenite is floated from the ore while other sulfide and non-sulfide gangue minerals are depressed in the same step (Figure 1). The process was developed at the Climax mill. Reagents used in the rougher-flotation stage include vapor oil (collector), syntex (surfactant), pine oil (frother) and occasionally sodium cyanide and Nokes reagent (depressant). Rougher concentrate is upgraded by cleaner flotation to produce market-grade molybdenite concentrates. Reagents used in the cleaner flotation stage are Dowfroth 250, vapor oil, sodium cyanide and Nokes reagent. The development of the flotation reagent scheme at Climax and the role of the reagents have been well described by Born, et al, (1976) and Malhotra, et al, (1976, 1977a, 1977b, 1977c, 1980). The hydrocarbon collector, vapor oil, accounts for approximately 50 percent of the total molybdenite-flotation reagent cost. Because vapor oil sources are limited, and the cost of vapor oil has increased significantly over the last decade, several studies have been done to evaluate alternate oil-based collectors and/or blends of collectors which would produce similar metallurgical results at a reduced cost, or increase the overall molybdenite recovery at the same cost (Smit and Bhasin, 1983; Hahn, 1969; Smith and Bhappu, 1971). The approach taken in the present study was to evaluate alternate non-oil based collectors and collector systems that are less expensive than vapor oil.

A soldagem por brasagem a vácuo promove a união de materiais dissimilares com alto valor agregado. Este trabalho visa estudar a interação química do nitreto de boro hexagonal (h-BN) na interface de ligação brasada do par Kovar®/h-BN. As variáveis de processo são determinantes para formação da junta brasada metalurgicamente estável. O trabalho estuda a molhabilidade do h-BN quando em contato com ligas de adição do sistema eutético Ag-Cu durante a solidificação. Foram conduzidos ensaios no h-BN a fim de caracterizar sua aplicação no sensor de posição do feixe de elétrons (BPM) do projeto do Sirius, e as propriedades que influenciam o seu processamento durante a brasagem, como coeficiente de expansão térmica e molhabilidade superficial. Os ensaios de brasagem com a liga Ag-Cu-4,5Ti, mostraram boa molhabilidade e espalhamento na superfície, favorecendo a formação da junta sem descontinuidades. As reações na interface são complexas no sentido de formação de novas fases e intermetálicos e, influenciadas pela seleção dos materiais, que possuem diferentes temperaturas de fusão e coeficientes de expansão térmica. Os resultados indicam que a seleção da liga com Ti, que é o elemento de ativação, promove a interação na superfície do h-BN com os demais materiais da junta.

The oldest known sediments are Early Oligocene terrestrial shales, sands and lignites deposited in half grabens formed as a result of oblique extension. A marine transgression in the Oligocene deposited mid-outer shelf to upper bathyal mudstones. Shallowing of the basin and tectonic quiessence lead to limestone deposition in the Early Miocene. Regional tilting led to uplift in the north and east and deposition of terrestrial lignites and gravels across the basin and the basement high to the south.

The effects of strain rate and temperature on the critical resolved shear stress for (321)[111] slip were determined for the silver-rich CsCl type of intermetallic compound AgMg. The flow stress increased only slightly as the test temperature was first decreased below room temperature; a rapid increase in the flow stress was obtained with yet further decrease in temperature from about 250' to 4OK. The effect of both the temperature and strain rate on the flow stress over the low-temperature range could be rationalized satisfactorily in terms of the Peiwls mechanism when the deformation was controlled by rate of nucleation of pairs of kinks. IN spite of the well-documented interest of metallurgists and engineers concerning the mechanical behavior of intermediate phases and intermetallic compounds, very little definitive information is available on this important subject. As recently summarized by westbrook,1 only limited and modest progress has been made thus far in elucidating the details of the mechanism of plastic deformation for the intermetallic compounds; the available information largely concerns phenom-enological descriptions of empirical observations and experimental facts, principally with reference to poly crystalline aggregates. The present report on the elucidation of the rate-controlling mechanism for slip in the bcc structure of AgMg is part of the comprehensive program of a systematic investigation on the mechanical behavior of intermetallic compounds. The intermetallic compound AgMg has a CsCl type of lattice structureZ and is completely ordered up to its melting point of 820c3 This material was selected for our present investigation because of its simple crystal structure, moderate and congruent melting point, ordered structure persisting up to the melting point, and some solubilities of the constituent elements, which could be expected to help in the growing of single-crystal specimens. Whereas previous investigations on the properties of AgMg include hardness,*"6 slip systems,7 tensile flow stress of polycrystalline specimens,' and electrical resistivity,4 the current investigation will be directed principally at elucidating the rate-controlling dislocation mechanism responsible for slip in single crystals at low temperatures. It will be shown that the strain rate is consistent with a model involving the rate of nucleation of pairs of kinks by the Peierls mechanism for plastic deformation. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Single-crystal specimens of the AgMg intermetallic compound were prepared and tested as follows: 1) A master alloy ingot of AgMg was produced by melting and chill casting the high-purity silver (99.995 wt pct) and high-purity magnesium (99.997 wt pct) in an induction furnace under a helium atmosphere. 2) Sections of the above-mentioned ingot were placed in a graphite mold containing a spherical cavity in which a single-crystal sphere of 1 in. diam was grown under helium by the Bridgman technique. 3) The operative slip systems were investigated at room temperature on a singlecrystal of AgMg, from measurements of the angles made by the slip traces on the two surfaces of the specimen, which were at 90 deg to each other. The investigation confirmed that the AgMg compound undergoes slip primarily in the (321) plane and in the [Ill] direction, but a small amount of secondary slip was also noticed in the (112) (111) system. No slip was observed in the (110) planes. 4) The single-crystal sphere, mentioned earlier, was oriented in a graphite mold containing a cylindrical cavity of 3/8 in. diam above the spherical receptable to give the angle xo = 45 deg between the axis of the cylindrical bar and the normal to the slip plane (321), and the angle AO = 45 deg between the slip direction [Ill] and the axis of the bar. Oriented single-crystal bar seeds were produced by melting, under a helium atmosphere, a polycrystalline bar in the cylindrical cavity above the oriented spherical seed and by growing an oriented single-crystal bar from the seed. 5) Finally, oriented single-crystal specimens were grown from these cylindrical seeds. 6) The cylindrical specimens were machined in a High-Tension Spark Cutting unit to give a 2-in. gage length. Precast concrete segments have been used in sanitary sewer tunnel design for decades. Federal mandates (reduction in heavy metals and I & I), and system design changes (increased retention times) and other factors have exacerbated corrosion problems. In an effort to combat the ever-growing effect of microbiologically induced corrosion, owners, engineers, and designers have been specifying thin-film lining systems to protect precast concrete segments. These systems have compatibility and installation issues. Chemical additives or calcareous aggregates have been utilized in precast concrete, but have only proven to retard the rate of corrosion and do not eradicate the problem. Solid cast polymer segments are stronger than precast concrete, do not require linings or coatings, are impervious to ground water infiltration, and, above all, are inherently corrosion resistant through and through.

The paper presents correlations of (l) molar volume of gaseous hydrocarbon mixtures with pressure, temperature, composition and properties of the C,-plus fraction; (2) shrinkage of oils during flash and differential liberation of gas, including the calculation of formation volume factor under various conditions; and (3) bubble-point pressure with temperature, composition and characteristics of C, plus. The data on which the correlations are based comprise 1,615 measurements on 900 hydrocarbon systems, including numerous systems containing nitrogen, hydrogen sul-fide and carbon dioxide. In each correlation, the number of data points covered and the accuracy is substantially greater than in previously available work. Thus, the equation yielding molar volumes of gases has an average deviation of 2.04 per cent, applied to mixtures having temperatures up to 313F and pressures up to 9,800 psis, compared to 2.37 per cent for the Benedict-Webb-Rubin equation applied to the same data, and 4.53 per cent for the method based on the law of corresponding states. he equations resented are all explicit in the dependent variable, and require no iteration on the digital cow puter. INTRODUCTION The ease and accuracy of determining the composition of hydrocarbon mixtures, compared to the difficulty of measuring their properties under reservoir conditions, makes it desirable to utilize composition as the key to physical behavior to the greatest possible extent. As a result, there are available correlations between composition, or easily measured characteristics dependent on composition, and practically every important engineering property of reservoir fluids. The task confronting us is one of finding more exact relationships between important variables rather than extending correlations to new properties. This paper describes new correlations of molar volumes of gases, formation volume factors, and bubble-point pressures with composition, temperature and where possible, pressure. Each correlation is obtained by employing a sufficiently large amount of data so the calculated properties are probably as least as accurate as the measurement on which they are based. MOLAR VOLUME OF GASES Although many equations of state have been proposed for pure gases, only a few methods are applicable to hydrocarbons at conditions comparable to those in petroleum reservoirs. Still fewer arc useful in describing the behavior of mixtures, with which the petroleum engineer is largely concerned. The correlation presented here involves procedures similar to those of Alani and Kennedy The van der Waals equation is modified to make a and b functions of temperature instead of being constants for each material.This is a cubic equation, which may have either one or three real roots. The lowest root corresponds to liquid volume, while the highest applies to gas. When the procedure was applied to 703 pressure-temperature points of 164 gases of known composition and volume, the average deviation was 12.08 per cent, and the standard deviation 8.15. The above calculations were made using the constants derived for liquids by Alani and Kennedy and the mixture equation developed by them. A closer approximation to measured molar volumes is obtained by employing different sets of constants for different areas on the pressure-temperature chart, and by changing the relationship between a,,, and b,,, for mixtures and the a, and b, for individual hydrocarbons. The various sets are shown in Table 1, and the areas for which they are recommended are plotted in Figs. 1 through 7. In these figures, the area designated by zero is in the critical region for pure materials, and the values obtained for them may be unreliable. For normal mixtures, however, the area may be added to any of the bounding areas without substantial error. The new relationships employed are

"The majority of U.S. underground coal mines use some form of cable bolt as supplemental support to a primary roof bolting system. Many coal operators employ the high load capacity of non-tensioned cable bolts, cable roof trusses, or solid bar trusses in an attempt to suspend the primary bolted horizon to overlying strata. However, in cases where many discontinuities exist in the roof strata or where pre-existing fractures are present, these passive supplemental support systems often cannot adequately control roof deflection. This paper examines the application of tensioned cable systems to minimize roof deflection in very laminated and fractured strata. Three underground case studies are presented to demonstrate the application of tensioned cable bolts. The first case study involves the rehabilitation of a longwall head gate in the Eagle Seam with highly laminated and fractured sandstone. The second case study examines the recovery of a longwall face in the Alma Seam. The final case study addresses rehabilitation of a longwall head gate in the Pittsburgh No. 8 Seam that was developed in a sandstone channel margin area and subjected to horizontal stress concentration.INTRODUCTIONDuring the previous decade, Jennmar Corporation has recognized coal operators' increasing interest in tensioned cable bolts. The majority of these tensioned cable bolt systems have been applied in adverse roof conditions including broken ground, high horizontal stress areas, and highly laminated roof strata. In most cases, qualitative data on roof conditions after application of tensioned cable bolt support indicate successful implementation of these systems. The qualitative evidence suggests that the combination of high load' capacity and applied tension provides superior supplemental roof support in adverse roof conditions. This research aims to quantify the effects of applied tension to cable bolts. This paper will review the types and installation of tensioned cable bolt systems, present initial laboratory test data, discuss successful case studies, and propose an instrumentation system for quantification of tensioned cable bolt performance."

Detailed production statistics listing the operations according to producing sands, districts, etc., are not available for New York State and are scarcely obtainable without extraordinary effort and expense, hardly warranted by the current rate of developments. The oil industry is practically stabilized, so far as exploration for new sources of supply are concerned; no new pools have been tapped in the last 25 or 30 years. There is little prospect of extending the boundary of the oil fields beyond their present limits, though possibly some additional reserves may be found below the present productive sands. Natural gas, on the other hand, is not restricted to such confined areas. Drilling for gas has been fairly active, under the stimulation of some important finds in formations that previously were overlooked. The year's field operations will be covered somewhat fully. Oil production, which has been steadily advancing for a number of years, showed a further moderate gain in 1936. The output for 11 months (figures for December are not yet available) was 4,217,000 bbl., indicating a total for the year of around 4,600,000 bbl. The increase was about 10 per cent, a rate maintained for some time. Prices were more satisfactory than in the preceding five years, with an advance to $2.57 a barrel before the year's close. New York State yield is all paraffin-base, in the same class with high-grade Pennsylvania oil. Most of the output is now obtained by the water drive, which has given a new lease of life to the fields and promises to bring the total to about 200,000,000 bbl. before the known acreage has been exhausted by this method. Before its introduction the annual production was under 1,000,000 bbl. a year. The fields cover an aggrcgate area of 55,000 acres, with some 17,000 wells in operation. Development Exploring for natural gas in New York in 1936 outside of the old established pools continued actively, as in the previous year. There was an increase in total initial production. In this paper a statistical multi-scale method for the mechanics parameter prediction of the rock mass with random distribution of multi-scale cracks/joints is presented. First the micro-structure of the rock mass with random distribution of multi-scale cracks/joints is represented. Then the statistical second-order two-scale method for the mechanics performance predictions of the rock mass structure with random cracks/joints distribution is presented, including the statistical second-order two-scale expression on the vector-valued displacement, strain tensor and stress tensor, and the algorithm procedure of statistical multi-sale computation for the mechanics parameters. Finally some numerical results for mechanical parameters for the rock mass with random distributions of multi-scale joints/cracks by statistical multi-scale method are shown.

"IntroductionEFFLORESCENCE is herein considered to be any deposit of salts on the surface of a masonry structure that is brought from within or through the structure by capillarity and deposited by evaporation. Usually, efflorescence is white although green, yellow, and brown efflorescence is sometimes observed.The common white efflorescence almost always consists of sulphates of the alkali and alkaline earth metals and calcium carbonate, although sodium chloride is frequently present in structures erected near the sea shore.The first and most obvious result of the presence of soluble salts in masonry is the unsightly accumulation of these salts on the surface. This is particularly noticeable early in its life and is frequently fugitive ( 1), as much of the salt is soluble and is gradually washed away by rain. This removal can usually be facilitated by scrubbing; the structure with dilute hydrochloric acid.A more serious effect is the continuous accumulation of soluble salts as a result of ingress of sulphur acids in rain water or water from the ground. This may eventually cause spalling and disintegration by crystallization of salts in the pores of brick and mortar. An example of this type of failure, resulting from the crystallization of calcium sulphate, is discussed by Hardesty (2). Butterworth (3) describes similar failure resulting from •crystallization of magnesium sulphate."

Mont-Wright mining complex is an important asset of ArcelorMittal located in the province of Quebec, Canada. It is composed by Mont-Wright and Fire Lake mines, operating 365 days per annum, and producing 25 Mtpa of iron ore concentrate with 66 per cent Fe. Mont-Wright concentration plant is composed by seven lines with a flow sheet encompassing AG/SAG milling, primary and secondary classification stages, spiral concentrators (rougher, cleaner and recleaner stages) and dewatering unit operations. In this context, an equation called ‘Wrec’ was developed in 1971 with the objective of estimating the mass recovery of the different blocks in the beneficiation plant and support the mining planning works of Mont-Wright complex. This equation was based on the correlation between the results of heavy liquid tests performed with drill core samples and spiral concentrators pilot scale tests, returning an estimative of concentrator yield. However, since its first development, no updates have been done in the equation, which lead to some deviations from expected recoveries in the last years. This is probably due to the changes in the process and in the ore fed into the concentrator during the period. In this way, the study presented here corresponds to the execution of heavy liquid/spirals pilot scale tests with 26 composite samples collected at Mont-Wright deposit aiming at revising and updating ‘Wrec’ equation. Based on test work results, an updated formula was established to estimate the plant recovery and a comparison performed using industrial data showed that the old formula overestimated the real yield by 5.40 per cent, on average. At the end of the study the new equation was incorporated into the mining planning process.

The first test pile for the carrier pier and south wharf at NAVSTA Puget Sound was driven on December 27, 1989, and the final pile was tested on February 26, 1990. Implementation and modification of the test pile program were done by the owners (WESTDIV and ROICC-Everett), the engineers (ABAM and Hart Crowser), and the contractor and his subcontractor (General Manson Joint Venture and GRL). The site is located as shown on Figure 1. SUMMARY OF THE SOIL CONDITIONS A soil profile along the pier is shown as Figure 2. The soil units can be generalized as follows: ? Upper Silts - Fill, sandy silt, and clayey silt extending from the mudline to an elevation of about -80 feet; ? Intermediate Sand - A medium dense to very dense silty sand unit which is about 30 feet thick near the shore, but thins and disappears offshore; ? Lower Silts - Sandy silts and clayey silts in a medium stiff to stiff condition; ? Deep Sand - A very dense overconsolidated sandy soil encountered at an elevation of about -145 feet.

The first commercially available portable gamma ray-neutron beryllium detector, the Rerylometer, was developed by the same group that developed the first practical portable scintillation counter, the Scintillo-meter. This group includes Professor George Brownell, of the Geology Department of the University of Manitoba in winnipeg, and his associates, K. I. Roulston, R. w. Pringle, and R. L. Funt, of the Physics and Engineering Departments of the University of Manitoba. A prototype model was tested in the field by Dr. Brownell during the summer of 1958. Commercial production was undertaken shortly thereafter by Nuclear Enterprises Ltd., of Winnipeg, and a license for manufacture and distribution in the U.S. was granted to Isotopes Specialties Co., of Burbank, California, a division of Nuclear Corporation of America. Early in 1959, we were retained by the 'Mining Division of Minerva Oil Co. to Legin a search throughout North America for minable deposits of beryllium, and to train members of their permanent staff to continue the program. The project included literature sur-veys, interviews with members of various federal, state, and provincial agencies, scanning of our own collection of suites of specimens from various mineral occurrences, and the examination of deposits in the field. The value of a beryllium detector to this program was obvious and arrangements were made to procure one as soon as possible, which resulted in our obtaining and using the first instrument that was produced commercially in the U. S. In addition to the commercially available Berylometer, Mr. William Vaughan and his associates, of the U. S. Geological Survey Geophysics Division, in Denver, have developed and tested several experimental instruments based on the same principles. DETECTOR Principles The detection of beryllium is based on the fact that "hard" gamma rays (1.6 MEV and geater), such as those produced by Antimony convert ordinary beryllium (Be9) to Be8 , with the release of a neutron. The neutrons are counted by a scintillator designed to favor neutron responses while suppressing those of gamma rays. 'The instrument is completely selective for beryllium. No other element can interfere. Instrunlentation The Rerylometer itself, which is cylindrical, is about 8 inches in diameter, 13 inches high, and weighs about 11 pounds. (Figs. 1, 2). The principal components include: 1. A disc of wax to moderate (or "thermalize") neutrons. 2. A boron-enriched polyester-zinc-sulphide fluorescent screen. This material produces strong flashes when struck by thermalized neutrons but only weak flashes from gamma rays. 3. A photomultiplier tube. 4. An electronic circuit, complete with one srnall 71/2-volt dry battery. "Future Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plants will have superior environmental performance and unmatched efficiency.The Shell Coal Gasification Process (SCGP) is a clean coal technology, which can convert a wide range of coals into clean syngas for high efficiency electricity generation in an IGCC plant. SCGP flexibility has been demonstrated for feeds ranging from bituminous coals to lignites and petroleum coke, and the process is ideally suited for combined cycle power generation, resulting in efficiencies of 42% to 46% (LHV).In the Netherlands, a 250 MWe coal gasification combined cycle plant based on Shell technology is being built by Demkolec, a development partnership of the Dutch Electricity Generating Board (N. V. Sep). The plant is scheduled to start up in 1993. IntroductionBasic ConceptShell's experience with gasification dates back to the 1950s, when the first Shell Gasification Process was commissioned with oil as feedstock. There are now over 140 SGP gasifiers licensed. The experience gained on oil gasification provided a firm theoretical and practical base for the start of coal gasification process development in 1972.At that time, there were serious concerns about the future availability and price of crude oil. Coal gasification (making carbon monoxide and hydrogen by the partial oxidation of coal) was considered to be an important option for refinery applications, because the synthesis gas (syngas) produced can be used as:• a chemical feedstock for making transportation fuels and chemicals;• a source of hydrogen (making use of the water gas shift reaction) for upgrading petroleum products; and• a fuel for heating process streams and/or generating electricity."

Improve transmission of data from an underground mine monitoring system to a remote, mass-data storage system. Background Instrumentation systems in underground mines must operate under environmental extremes of dust and humidity, local electromagnetic/radio frequency (EM/RF) interference fields, and potentially explosive atmospheres. During a recent roof-bolt study performed by the Bureau of Mines, it was necessary to transmit a large quantity of data to a data storage system. Conventional wire cable transmission presented several limitations which often required special electrical isolation or physical protection. Because conventional wire cable presented certain problems, the Bureau of Mines investigated alternative means of data transmission. The research investigation led to the selection of fiber optic cable for data transmission applications. The fiber optic method of data transmission offers several advantages: ? Since the transmission medium consists of light waves, it is safe to use in gassy mines. Where applicable, MSHA permissibility standards for peripheral devices must be met. ? It is lightweight and rugged. ? It can operate up to 131000 feet (4km) without repeaters and without EM/RF field interference.

ON Oct. 5, 1926, the day before the general ses-sions of the fall meeting of the American Insti-tute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers at Pittsburgh, a round table conference on the combus-tibility and testing of coke was held at the Bureau of Mines Experiment Station. There were about fifty present, with A. C. Fieldner, chief chemist of the Bureau of Mines, as chairman. The following organi-zations were represented: American Institute of Min-ing and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society for Testing Materials, American Gas Association, Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Association, Gas and Fuel Division of, American Chemical Society, and Southern Ohio Pig Iron and Coke Association. In opening the proceedings, Mr. Fieldner explained that the meeting had been called at the suggestion of several members of the Institute and members of other organizations. The subject is of interest to the pro-ducer and the user of coke whether it be in a blast furnace, cupola furnace, house-heating furnace, open grate, gas producer, or in a water-gas generator. There has been much confusion on this subject largely because there is no common definition of combustibility. Does the blast-furnace superintendent, the coke-oven operator, and the fuel engineer have the same under-standing of the term "combustibility"? If a common understanding can be reached, many differences of opinion will disappear. COMBUSTIBILITY OF COKE R. H. Sweetser of Columbus, Ohio, disagreed with the statement of P. H. Royster, T. L. Joseph, and S. P. Kinney in Reports of Investigations, Serial No. 2524, of the Bureau of Mines, in which it was stated that the coke-oven op-erator cannot change coke combustibility by modifying oven practice. Mr. Sweetser held that the coke-oven man can change the combustibility of coke. Blast-furnace men know that coke that will burn easily with low pressure and will. come down in the regular way in the furnace can be pro-duced from a given mixture of coal. His idea of the combustibility of coke is the rate of flow through the com-bustion zone of the blast furnace. If the coke does not pass through in normal manner it is highly incombustible. H. J. Rose of the Koppers Co., Pittsburgh, objected to being pinned down so closely on this phase of the com-bustibility and incombustibility of coke. Coke-oven men are frequently obliged to change oven conditions to make a coke which gives blast-furnace men what they want. The size of the coke and the screening have an important bear-ing on combustibility, and there are many cases on record where by simply changing the different sizes of the coke, everything worked smoothly, and that is a much more combustible coke.
