Most new engineers in the mining industry do not realise the importance of legal obligations. During investigations the first question you are asked is: Do you have any proof or evidence? The smallest detail in an underground notebook or a diary entry is able to be used as your proof and/or evidence. The importance of a paper trail is often undervalued and overlooked when you first enter the industry. As a new engineer, all too often your legal obligations, including your duty of care are not given enough consideration. Whose job is it to inform you of what your legal obligations are and when do they end? Everyone has legal obligations at every level of the industry, from graduate to mine manager. The level of these responsibilities varies depending on the position that you hold. When you first start in the industry you need to understand what your responsibilities are and how you are expected to discharge them, whether they are memos, databases or senior sign-offs, etc. In order to fulfil your obligations you must first discharge your own obligation, which in turn discharges those of your department and ultimately those of the mine. As a graduate engineer in the mining industry what I have learnt about my own legal obligations has come directly from my own experience, which will form the basis of this paper.

The Northwest experiment station of the Federal Bureau of Mines , at Seattle , Wash . , was established in December , 1916 , and is one of 13 mining experiment stations maintained by Act of Congress , under the direction of the bureau , in the various sections of the country . Under the terms of the organic Act (March 3 , 1915 ) , the province and duty of these experiment stations is to cake investigations and disseminate information with a view to decreasing waste and improving the efficiency in the production , treatment , and utilization of mineral substances . The investigations carried on at the Northwest experiment station attempt to cover the needs of the mineral industry of the States of the Pacific Northwest and of the coastal regions of Alaska . The most in ortant needs of this district are for work on coal washing , electrometallurgy , and ceramics . The electrometallurgical investigations are not necessarily limited to the Problems of the Northwest , but may be of general application . Problems other than those specified above are referred to other stations of the Bureau that specialize on the particular type of investigation required . The Northwest station closely cooperates with the State of Washington through the University of Washington and with the State of Oregon through the Oregon Bureau of Mines and Geology . The University of Washington at Seattle has donated the use of an entire building , which houses the station's administrative offices and chemical laboratory , and parts of two other buildings which are usea in conducting the experimental avestigations . Twenty-five thousand dollars is expended annually by the Federal Government , while the State of Washington each biennium appropriates $ 20,000 , and the State of Oregon from time to time appropriates various amounts for the conduct of work along cooperative lines . Also , the station cooperates with private organizations tht have problems similar to those in which the station is interested . For example , the Washington Electrochemical Co. is cooperating in the electrometallurgical research, and furnishes part of the supplies and technical assistance required .

The major fire and fire injury findings for all metal/nonmetal mining categories for 1990-2001 are shown in tables 64-65. Table 66, partly illustrated in figure 22, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, fire fatalities, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays for all metal/nonmetal mining categories by time period. For all metal/nonmetal operations (including stone and sand and gravel), a total of 518 fires occurred during 1990-2001; 296 of those fires caused 308 injuries and 4 fatalities (Ewhr = 4,012 x 106 hr, In = 0.015, LWD = 36,204). Thirty fires and 26 injuries involved contractors. The greatest number of fires and fire injuries occurred at surface operations; the highest risk rate values were also calculated for surface operations. The number of fires increased during the first four 2-year time periods (1990-1991, 1992-1993, 1994-1995, and 1996-1997), then decreased during the last two periods (1998-1999 and 2000-2001). The number of injuries showed a decrease throughout the periods, accompanied by an increase in employees' working hours. Twenty-five firefighting interventions by mine rescue teams in underground mines and at least 30 interventions at surface operations were required to combat these fires. However, 45 fires destroyed or heavily damaged facilities and equipment (including 19 pieces of mobile equipment) because of failure of firefighting methods, late fire detection, undetected fires, or fire size. Ninety-seven fires were detected late, and 30 fires were undetected. The ignition sources that caused the greatest number of fires were flame cutting/welding spark/slag/flame (169 fires or 33% with 137 injuries), hydraulic fluid/fuel sprayed onto equipment hot surfaces (89 fires or 17% with 46 injuries and 3 fatalities), heat source/explosion and flammable liquids/ gas/refueling fuel on hot surfaces (98 fires or 19% with 73 injuries), electrical short/arcing (51 fires or 10% with 16 injuries), and spontaneous combustion/hot material (46 fires or 9% with 17 injuries). The flame cutting/welding spark/slag/flame source caused fires usually involving welders' clothing or oxyfuel/grease and other materials (including chute and dust collector liners, flammable liquids, belt material, crusher, hopper and shaker deck materials, washer plants, equipment mechanical components, stampler breaker, hydraulic fluid, rubber tires and hoses, gear boxes, bin feeder, dump rope cables, screen liner and screen panel, kiln and shaft material, pipelines, liquor pumps, wood pallets, electrical junction boxes, handrails, grease, refuse, shop and wood). The spontaneous combustion/hot material and electrical fires were usually detected late due to lack of combustion gas/smoke detection systems. "INTRODUCTIONMine ventilation planning is an engineering design process requiring a substantial amount of qualitative knowledge obtained through experience. A concept for a knowledge-based ventilation expert system was developed by Ramani and Prasad (1987).1 11 An expert system based on the above scheme was conceived with the motivation of providing a tool to facilitate decision making for ventilation engineers in the context of computer assisted ventilation planning. Options for the implementation of the system were then examined and several commercial, personal computer (PC) based shells assessed toward this end. The options considered, the evaluation criteria and procedure arc discussed in Prasad ·and Ramani, (1989).Cll Following the above study, a scheme was developed to represent the components of the expert system.<3> Evaluation of several commercial shells indicated that there was none available which permitted interfacing with a large external algorithmic program. It was therefore decided to develop the KBS in LISP and custom build the necessary interfacing routines to ""hook out• to the network analysis program (NAP). Due to this choice of development strategy, the computer implementation aspects of the KBS arc important as all the interfacing components had to be developed with the basic tools offered by LISP.In this paper, the implementation of the knowledge based system (KBS), in terms of its component, the interfaces among the various components of the KBS and between the KBS and the user arc described. The ventilation KBS consists of an AES (analysis expert system), an IES (interpretation expert system)' and an algorithmic NAP (network analy5is program). The AES analyzes the input to the NAP considering the legal 5tipulations governing the various mine ventilation network parameters and principles of good ventilation, helping the ventilation engineer develop and represent represent the problem for solution by the NAP. The IES diagnoses the output from the NAP in terms of the critical parameters in the context of the given problem. Thi5 loop is continued till a satisfactory salution is obtained. The implementational details of the AES, the IES and the approaches to the validation of the expert system arc also discussed."

Introduction The purpose of coal preparation is to improve the quality of coal to make it suitable for a specific purpose by (1) cleaning to remove inorganic impurities; (2) sizing-crushing or screening, or both; and (3) special treatment, such as dedusting. The properties and quantities of impurities in coal are of major importance in the design and operation of steam generating equipment. Although boilers are often designed and equipped to use a wide range of coals, no boiler will perform equally well with all types of coals. All coals have certain properties that place limitations on their most advantageous use. These limitations are especially stringent for many of the older installations. Because of a general lowering of quality of raw coal in recent years, the need for coal cleaning has significantly increased. Among the factors contributing to the need for increased coal preparation are (1) increased demand for quality brought on by market and environmental requirements; (2) increased extraneous dilution caused by mine, health, and safety laws; and (3) depletion of the higher-quality coal seams. The major characteristics of coal and impurities from the standpoint of mechanical cleaning are particle size composition, generally called size consist; density differences; the relative friability of the coal and its associated impurities; hardness; and strength. Some of the other factors related to preparation are petrographic composition and rank. RANK CLASSIFICATION Coal is a general designation for a great number of solid organic minerals with different compositions and properties; all are rather rich in carbon and have a dark color, generally black. Next to mineral oil and kerogen, coal is the most important reservoir of carbon in the world. Carbon is an indispensable necessity of life as well as the main source of energy. Coals are found in stratified deposits, sometimes at great depths. All coals owe their origins to slow decomposition and chemical conversion of immense masses of organic material. As found in seams, coal is a heterogeneous mixture of organic and inorganic materials. Not only are there large differences in the properties of coal originating from different seams, but also in coal removed from different locations in a single seam. A genetic relationship exists between peats, brown coals, lignites, biturninous coals, and anthracites. As a whole, the process of coal formation, or coalification, proceeds as a continuous transformation of plant material, each phase characterized by a degree of coalification, or rank. As a measure of this rank, the carbon content or some related parameter can be used.

"The successful introduction of new high intensity stirred milling technologies (e.g. IsaMill, SMDetritor) to the mining industry in recent years prompted Noranda-Falconbridge to initiate a study comparing these technologies to the conventional technologies of ball milling and existing vertical stirred mills (e.g. VertiMill). The study was unique in that it utilized the same material (Brunswick Mine zinc cleaner regrind mill feed), the same sizing instrument (a Malvern laser difractometer) and sampling protocol, and media size and type (for the high intensity stirred mills). The paper compares the net energy efficiency (kWh/t) of the various technologies, their power intensity (kW/m3) and product size distribution spread (P80/P20). A key finding is that media size is critical to achieving optimal performance. As part of the performance comparison, an analysis of the four methods of power measurement was made (Prony brake, shaft torque, grinding chamber reaction torque, “no-load” correction) and followed-up with an experimental test procedure using three of these methods. The findings include divergent results for power measurements and some explanations based on the observations are proposed. The direct shaft torque and Prony brake calibration methods are shown to be the methods most suitable for stirred mills.INTRODUCTIONThe motivation for the investigation reported here was the lack of a suitable comparison within the available literature of relative grinding efficiency for the emerging crop of new industrial fine grinding technologies. Such comparisons are potentially fraught with inconsistency, from ore samples and grinding media used, to testing methodology, to size measurement techniques, to the power measurements themselves. The collaboration of the industrial suppliers (at the time MIM Technologies and Svedala, now Xstrada Technologies and Metso Minerals) and McGill University (P. Radsiszewski) were sought in order to ensure as valid a comparison as possible. The work was performed between October 2000 and November 2002, led by the mineral processing group at the Noranda Technology Centre (NTC) in Pointe-Claire, Quebec. The paper is presented in two sections; Part A considers the different power measurement methods and a comparison of the results for the SMDetritor (SMD) technology, while Part B reviews the grinding performance of the 5 technologies investigated using the selected performance criteria."

Fox some years the prejudice against basic open-hearth steel for casting has been gradually decreasing. Yet many consumers and engineers still cling to acid steel for castings, because of their alleged greater freedom from blow-holes and sponginess. Acid steel has been used for this purpose much longer than basic steel; and the melters in acid practice had it well in hand when basic steel was first tried. Then the necessity of learning a new set of laws for the production of satisfactory basic open-hearth steel for castings became evident. The first of these laws, in my opinion, has to do with the furnace construction. The heat should be melted down as speedily as possible so as to prevent excessive oxidation. I have described in another article &apos; some furnaces designed by me, and having as one of their features the promotion of quick melting. Size of the Furnace. The hearth of the furnace, however, is a decisive factor in the production of solid castings. The manufacturer should know the size of the heats he intends to make constantly, and should have his furnace built for that size of heat. The hearth should differ in dimensions from that of a furnace making ingotr steel. That is, the bath should be deeper and should have less surface-area. A shallow bath permits the slag to come out soon after the steel commences to flow, and thus prevents the additions from going into the steel, or from becoming uniformly distributed in case they have been put in hurriedly. Under this head comes the very poor practice of making small heats in hearths of a much larger capacity. If into a 25-or 30-ton furnace only 12 or 15 tons of metal is charged per heat, the proportion of heats that will be wild, or show signs

Vibrating wire stressmeters (VWS&apos;s) and borehole deformation gages (BDG) were deployed in two in-situ heater experiments at Stripa, Sweden to determine the thermally induced stress changes in the rock mass. The heater experiments ran for 18 months, including a six- month cool-down period after the heaters were turned off. Gages were installed in both horizontal and vertical boreholes and were subjected to temperatures ranging from 10°C to 120°C, depending upon the distance of a gage from the central heater. Most gages operated in a moist environment because groundwater flowed into many of the instrument boreholes during the experiments Of the 36 VWS&apos;s installed, six failed. Failures were attributed to corrosion of the vibrating wire due to moisture entering the gage body. Of the 30 BDG&apos;s installed at the beginning of the experiments, 22 failed, also as the result of water entering the gage body. Modification and reinstallation of the gages eliminated the problem of water infiltration, but much data from early stages of the experiments was lost due to gage failures. Calibration of the VWS in blocks of Stripa granite showed a lack of repeatability. Variability in calibration results are attributed to seating effects, to variations in the elastic modulus of the rock, and to changes in temperature. These three effects combined to produce an error judged to be approximately ±33% of the stress changes measured at Stripa. In contrast, the major source of error in determining stress with the BDG appears to be the uncertainty in rock modulus and thermal expansion coefficient. Gaseous and particulate exhaust emissions from 20 diesel engines in service at five underground mines were measured with high accuracy instrumentation. The engines that were tested were checked for faults or maladjustments. The vehicle and engine maintenance organization was studied at each mine and an idealized maintenance program was devised. Faults were induced in a new diesel engine to determine their effect on the characteristics of the exhaust emissions. The results, conclusions and recommendations from this investigation are presented in this final report.

The recovery process in 400 Monel filings was followed, principally, by using the Warren-Averbach technique of X-ray peak profile analysis. The deformation fault probability, a, was 0.006 in samples of unannealed filings. a , the twin fault Probability , was approximately 0.002 in samples of unannealed filings. Both a and 0 were found to "anneal out" at 600°F. The effective particle size and mzs strain increased and decreased in the (111) direction, respectively, with increasing annealing temperature. The actual particle size was found to be almost equivalent to the effective particle size. Tile small values of deformation and twin fault probabilities accounted for the similarity in values of the effective and actual particle sizes. Stored strain energy and dislocation density calculations based on rms strain decreased with increasing annealing temperature. The dislocation density decreased from 10" per sq cm in the unannealed filings to 10&apos; per sq cm in the partially re-crystallized filings. The square root of the dislocation density based on strain to that based on particle size indicated a random dislocation distribution in the unannealed filings. The dislocation arrangement changed to one with dislocations in cell walls with increasing annealing temperature. THE recovery processes which occur in metals are generally thought to be a redistribution and/or annihilation of defects.&apos; Investigators&apos; have shown that recovery processes can be characterized by X-ray line-broadening analyses. Michell and Haig4 measured the stored energy of nickel powder by calori-metry and found the value to be greater by a factor of 2.5 than that from X-ray data obtained by the Warren-Averbach technique.= Minor increases in particle size occurred up to 752°F (recovery), while above 752°F the particle size increased greatly due to recrystalliza-tion. X-ray microstrain values decreased between room temperature and 392"F, remained constant from 392" to 752"F, and decreased from 752°F to a negligible value at 1112°F. Faulkner developed an equation for calculating stored strain energy based on X-ray line-broadening data which gave a closer correlation of measured and calculated stored strain energy based on the data of Michell and Haig. The stored strain energy released during recovery is predominately dependent on the decrease in dislocation density which was p-enerated from cold work.7 Stored energy has been measured8 in alkali halides during recovery and recrystallization and 80 pct of the stored energy was found to be released during recovery. Dislocation distributions have been studiedg in a number of fcc metals by thin-film electron microscopy. Howie and Swann" found the stacking fault energy of copper and nickel to be 40 and 150 ergs per sq cm, respectively. ~rown" has pointed out that these stacking fault energy values should be corrected to 92 and 345 ergs per sq cm, respectively. The dislocation distribution of a metal is directly dependent on the stacking fault energy of the system. Metals of high stacking fault energy such as aluminum cross-slip readily and do not form planar arrays of dislocations. Metals of lower stacking fault energy such as stainless steels" do not cross-slip readily. Cold-worked nickel has been found to form a cellular dislocation structure after annealing.13 The relatively high stacking fault energy of nickel and copperlo to a lesser extent favor cellular structures of dislocations rather than planar arrays after deformation. The present study of recovery was carried out on a Ni-Cu alloy (Monel 400) to compare with prior studies for pure nickel and pure copper. X-ray line-broadening techniques were used to measure the effect of recovery temperature on rms strain and particle size and the results were compared with previous studies on copper&apos;4-&apos;7 and nickel., Calculations were also made on stacking fault probabilities, dislocation density, dislocation distribution, and stored strain energy as affected by temperature. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The nominal analysis of the Monel 400 used in this investigation was: 66.0 pct Ni, 31.5 pct Cu, 0.12 pct C, 0.90 pct Mn, 1.35 pct Fe, 0.005 pct S, 0.15 pct Si. The annealed material was cold-reduced in two batches, one 50 pct and the other 80 pct. It was originally planned to conduct line-broadening studies of these bulk samples; however, rolling textures that developed produced low-intensity peaks which were not suitable for line-broadening analysis. Filings were prepared at room temperature from both the 50 and 80 pct cold-reduced specimens, series A and series B, respectively, and were not screened prior to heat treatment or X-ray studies. Heating to the annealing temperature, 200" to 120O°F, was accomplished in a matter of minutes in a hydrogen atmosphere. Following heat treatment, some of the filings were mounted and polished for microhardness measurements with a Bergsman microhardness tester, using a 10-g load. A G.E. XRD-5 diffractometer using nickel-filtered Cum radiation was used to obtain all diffraction patterns. FEW of us who waded ashore on the Norman beaches realized the importance of coal to a successful invasion. General Eisenhower and his staff had been aware of the essential need for coal and an able Solid Fuels Section had been set up under the direction of Colonel Robert P. Koenig, of Indiana. This organization met the requirements of the invading armies on their march to the Rhine. East of the Siegfried Line enemy territory, the Army Engineers were called upon for assistance. When the Engineers were advised that, in addition to their normal duties, they were to occupy and place in operation the coal mines in the Twelfth Army group area, plans were drawn up overnight and action was initiated immediately. The Sixth Engineer Special Brigade, a versatile outfit which made a notable record D-Day on Omaha Beach, was selected to handle the operation. Within 48 hours of the new assignment an advance command post was set up cm the west bank of the Rhine at Homberg, just below German-held Duisburg. The 368th Engineer General Service Regiment was assigned to the Brigade, and the British 44th Pioneer Group, including specialist personnel, was also attached. "This study considers two lead/zinc/silver orebodies which have historically had a problem with pyrite, pyrrhotite and sphalerite contamination in the lead circuit. The problem was previously addressed with high dosages of sodium cyanide as the primary depressant. However, large amounts of cyanide led to environmental problems in the effluent, especially during winter months. The objective was to reduce cyanide consumption while maintaining or improving overall lead grade and recovery via the reduction of the undesirable sulphides.Extensive laboratory and mill testing was necessary to determine the optimal operating parameters for continuous plant application. Evaluation of data received from this testing has shown that selective addition and optimization of the dosage of Unimax SD100 to specific areas of the flotation and grinding circuits has resulted in improved Pb grade and recovery. Parameters such as pH control, regrind operation, the cyanide/Unimax ratio and sulphide mineral content may also affect the performance of the depressant. Each factor is discussed and optimal operating conditions were determined based on the testing.Results are presented for two case studies. Both indicate that Unimax SD100 improves the lead grade/recovery curve by increasing iron and zinc rejection while reducing cyanide consumption and the resulting environmental concerns. 1. Hart"

In operation of column flotation of fine coal, the smaller bubbles are required to effectively recovery of fine hydrophobic particles. However, smaller size bubbles alone does not ensure an efficient flotation for fine particles. The sufficient available bubble surface area per unit column are essential for effective column flotation. The experiments are conducted in a lab-scale column using two different bubble size distributions and three different particle size distributions for flotation of Pittsburgh No.8 seam coal. The interaction between particle size, aeration rate, feed rate and wash water addition are examined in this investigation to establish the optimal operation conditions for flotation of fine coal. Despite of wide range of operation conditions used in this study, it is found that the experimental data fall in a single characteristic recovery-ash curve for a given bubble size distribution and particle size distribution. The major parameters affect the flotation performance points along -the characteristic recovery-ash curves are aeration rate/frother dosage, feed rate and wash water rate-.

The present method of shipping potash to the myriad of consumers is inefficient, not only because of the extreme and unpredictable nature of seasonal demand, but also because railway car turnaround times are very lengthy. The Floating Train system employs unit trains of potash operating from Saskatchewan mines to distribution warehouses located throughout the six corn-belt states of Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin , Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, transshipment points at Thunder Bay and the U.S. waterway network, and, where applicable , large consumers. These unit trains would "float", meaning that they would not originate at the same mine nor terminate at the same warehouse on each trip . They would " float " freely among the origins, destinations and participating railways. The potash would be shipped uniformly throughout the year and usually stored in warehouses located within the six states. It would be subsequently delivered to consumers within a 75-mile radius. Distribution warehouses and rolling stock would be provided by a new company, Potash Distribution Limited, consisting of major potash producers and the Canadian railways. Potash Distribution Limited would be responsible for the distribution of potash from the origin through the warehouses to the final consumer. The additional costs of providing warehouse space and outbound delivery will be offset by the reduction in both rail rates and "peaking" expenses.

This paper provides a summary of the studies performed over a period of more than fifteen years by the Italian National Research Council&apos;s Mineral Processing Institute in Rome to develop applications for the use of chelating reagents in the flotation of metallic minerals. A description is given of the various phases through which the studied progressed, starting with the combined use of commercial chelating reagents and a neutral oil and then moving on to the synthesis of new long-chain chelate collectors for the flotation of sulphide and oxidized Pb, Zn and Cu minerals. After a series of preliminary tests which confirmed the possibility of floating various metallic minerals with commercial reagents containing chelating groups exerting specific action on given cations, the studies were addressed to the development of a theoretical method of choosing chelating groups that exert selective action on one metallic mineral rather than others. The theoretical approach was based on thermodynamic data concerning the chemical equilibria in solution. The validity of the method has been proved in numerous cases by flotation tests on pure minerals. Subsequently the research was directed towards the design and synthesis of reagents with a mixed aliphatic-aromatic structure containing chelating groups for Pb and Zn and an alcoxyl chain of various length, position and configuration. The flotation results obtained on oxidized and mixed Zn-Pb ores provided interesting pointers for designing the nonpolar portion. The structural criteria identified via these studies were interpreted on the basis of chemical and steric considerations. A description is given of a new synthetic chelate collector which is effective in the selective flotation of Cu minerals from complex sulphides. The fact that this reagents is more selective than xanthate is demonstrated by comparative flotation tests on actual ores.

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of amino acids (glycine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, lysine and tryptophan) and organic acids (citric, malic, tartaric, fumaric, oxalic, succinic and ascorbic acid) on gold extraction from silicate ore. Use of amino acids to extract gold was preferred compared with organic acids due to the presence of carboxylic group and amine groups in amino acids. Among the assessed amino acids, aspartic acid and glutamic acid had higher capacities to extract gold due to their structures, which lacked aromatic rings and long side chains. Organic acids could also extract gold. In particular, oxalic and succinic acids had the greatest capacity to extract gold versus the other tested organic acids. Moreover, aspartic acid had a greater capacity to extract gold from ores than the same concentration of succinic acid. We confirmed the aspartic acid and succinic acid functional groups by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The findings revealed that aspartic acid had a greater capacity to extract gold than succinic acid due to the presence of both amine and carboxylic groups (succinic acid contained only a carboxylic group). The optimal gold:aspartic acid molar ratio was 1:6 and low concentrations of aspartic acid extracted 35–42%of gold from silicate ore within 15 days. This can be used as an alternative to traditional methods for extracting gold from ore; it is non-toxic to human health and environmentally friendly.

There was a marked increase in the investigation of undeveloped areas in Colombia during 1936. The Shell company commenced geological and geophysical investigations on an intensive scale in the Upper Magdalena Valley and at the end of the year had several geological and geophysical parties working in that area. These investigations were supplemented by aerial photography and it is understood that negotiations are under way for having this work continued. The Shell is reported to have acquired some options and leases on private properties in the Upper Valley region and in the western part of Cundinamarca. The Socony Vacuum was making preparations to begin seismograph work on its property north of the Sogamoso River, acquired in 1934 from Sefior Luciano Restrepo. This company will probably start drilling on the property during 1937. The Richmond Petroleum Co. (Standard of California) is said to have renewed geological investigations in the Upper Magdalena Valley above Honda. Local Colombian interests took an active part in applying for concessions on nationally owned lands in the area between the Carare and Magdalena Rivers. Pebble phosphate mines of Florida have been established from south of Hardee County to north of the Georgia state line, a distance of over 200 miles. Mining has been carried out on an ever-increasing scale since 1885, but phosphate deposits that can be mined on the economical standards of today, are confined in a roughly circular area about 30 miles in diameter, generally within Polk and Hillsborough Counties, in the central part of the State. The phosphate deposit, which is in the Bone Valley formation of Pliocene age, is covered by Pleistocene terrace deposits of unconsolidated quartz sand. The matrix is composed of approximately 1/3 clay slimes, 1/3 silica sand and 1/3 phosphate pebbles. The phosphate usually occurs as rounded pebbles, ranging in size from about 1 in. down to approximately 400 mesh. The phosphate may vary from well-defined hard pebbles to soft weathered rock. The color and character of the phosphate will range from smooth buff pebbles to black and white "salt-and- pepper rock." The screen size distribution varies considerably between locations; the recoverable phosphate may extend down to the 400-mesh size in some areas, while in others the phosphate may cut off sharply at about 35 mesh.
