The attention of the world is being focused on the spectacular rise of elemental sulphur production in Alberta. In the short space of a decade, production has increased from less than 10,000 long tons, in 1952, to al-most 1,000,000 long tons in 1962. Moreover, 1963 sulphur production is expected to rise by 50 per cent to approximately 1,500,000 long tons, and further increases are forecast for ensuing years. The reason for this dramatic in-crease in elemental sulphur production, particularly in the last year or two, is that Alberta elemental sulphur is recovered in association with the production of sour natural gas. When very large volumes of natural gas began moving to U.S. markets in the latter part of 1961, the resultant increase in sour gas production led to a marked increase in the production of sulphur. Consequently, Canada, mainly on the strength of sulphur produced in Alberta, will soon become the second largest producer of sulphur in the Free World

Rehabilitation approaches, methods and outcomes have changed markedly over the last 100 years, and especially over the last 20 years. Alluvial gold dredges have moved from creating a legacy of boulder fields and ponds to radiata pine plantations and highly productive dairy pastures. The rehabilitated farmland has reduced flood risk, improved drainage and efficient paddock design. The next challenge is to include areas of environmental diversity in these projects, for example, shelter belts, patches of native trees, and wetlands that were part of the original landscape.   West Coast coal mines have also come from a legacy of leaving it to nature to rehabilitate damage by mining to establishing native ecosystems or plantation forests. Developments in techniques at Stockton Mine are used to illustrate the changes in approach to rehabilitation of native forest and tussock heathland ecosystems. The proposed Cypress Mine will adopt a full range of avoidance, remediation through rehabilitation, and off-site mitigation techniques in a æthree-prongedÆ approach.   We propose a coordinated extractive industry approach to mitigate for the impacts of mining on native ecosystems and achieve nationally important conservation benefits that individual projects cannot afford. This approach is particularly beneficial in New Zealand, as our native ecosystems must be actively managed to conserve native plants and animals. Currently, some important species and ecosystems are not being actively managed for conservation.

Bwana Mkubwa is a 50 000 tons per annum copper cathode producer, owned by First Quantum Minerals and located in Ndola, on the Zambian Copperbelt. The Bwana Mkubwa solvent-extraction circuit was started up in 1997. In 2002, the plant began treating ore from First Quantum?s Lonshi mine located in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Lonshi ore is exceptionally fine and the amount of solids in the feed solution reporting to the solvent-extraction feed solution increased dramatically. Initially, crud was filtered in a filter press, but this rapidly blinded and seldom produced anything better than a wet sludge containing large quantities of organic. In December 2003 the decision was made to install a Flottweg Z4E-3/441 Tricanter® centrifuge to recover organic from the crud. The installation was completed in June 2004 and has since led to significant improvements in plant operability and savings in organic consumption.

"IntroductionThis paper describes how the introduction of two blasting techniques and the resuItant development of new dragline digging methods have increased the productivity of single- and double-seam dragline operations at the Rietspruit opencast mine.LocationRietspruit , one of South Africa's largest opencast strip mines, is situated some 11 5 kilometres east of Johannesburg in the Witbank coal field.BusinessRietspruit is a joint venture between Transvaal Consolidate d Land and Exploration Company (T.C.L.) and Shell, South Africa. Rietspruit is administered and managed by Rand Mines, the Mining division of Barlow Rand, transportation and marketing being the responsibility of Shell. The total saleable coal product, approximately 5,5 million tons per annum, is exported via Richards Bay.Presplitting and Throw BlastingPresplitting was initially introduced in September 1980, as a means of dewatering t he overburden and mid burden to facilitate the use of dry-mix explosives a s opposed to slurry explosives.The utilization of the throw blasting technique arose as a direct result of observed ground movement after the successful introduction of presplitting. The first trials commenced in March 1981 on the double-seam operation. The methods, economics and resulting advantages are fully described elsewhere. A brief description follows.Method of PresplittingAfter determining the desired presplit line, 250-mm holes are drilled to top of coal at 4-m to 6-m intervals, dependent on the competency of the rock overlying the coal. A single 60-kg charge of slurry explosives is located at the bottom of each hole, no tamping is used and all the holes are detonated simultaneously. The results are a competent, straight, vertical highwall. This enables accurate control of the first row of blast holes closest to the highwall, which is a prime requisite for successful throw blasting."

A number of terrane reconstructions conflict with global plate histories or with data from adjacent regional studies. Paleogeographic maps have ignored terranes thus are over-simplified. This paper represents an attempt to "marry" Mesozoic global plate reconstructions and terrane analysis to produce examples of a "third generation" of global plate tectonic maps. The best approach to global terrane analysis involves intercomparison of all regional data and the evolving global model. Data conflicts within and between terranes and regions must be resolved by a system of relative data reliability "weighting." The most reliable and useful data are those which constrain "departure" (rift) and "arrival" (collision) times. Certain ad hoc decisions aid in the analysis (e.g. only one net vector allowed per plate). The maps that follow summarize Early Mesozoic global tectonic history at three critical junctures: 240 MA (Triassic); 180 MA (Jurassic); and 120 MA (Cretaceous). Due to space limitations, maps drawn at 20 m.y. intervals appear elsewhere. A preliminary Middle Triassic reconstruction is presented in Figure 1. Major plates and continental blocks are labeled; smaller blocks are marked with abbreviations. Examination of Figure 1 indicates the necessity of modeling Triassic tectonics with at least 68 blocks. Spalling- off of microcontinental slivers from Gondwanaland is active some 70 m.y. before the actual breakup of the supercontinent. In the SW sector of the Pacific, the Australian margins were embroidered with several terranes (e.g. Sumba) which eventually rifted away and crossed Tethys. The NW sector at this time included 10 microcontinental chips forming a huge archipelago along the Asian margin. All blocks inboard of Indochina collided by latest Triassic. Terranes of the NE sector include several (e.g. Arctic Alaska) along the North American margin, and at least six large blocks (e.g. Stikinia) drifting SE with the Farallon Plate. The SE sector

"This paper illustrates the possibilities of applying what is essentially a physical soil-washing technique for treatment of soil contaminated by semi-volatile hydrocarbons in order to reduce the level of pollution to that permitted by Italian regulations.The ground around a factory producing lubricating-oil additives consists of silty-sandy soils which have long been contaminated by heavy hydrocarbons, especially branched alkyl benzenes and naphthalene derivatives. Pollution is particularly marked in some zones (hot-spots) where Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) values are as high as 7000 ppm. The hydrogeological characterization showed the presence of a gravely soil in a sandy/silty matrix, with big stones making preferential paths to the water circulation. The permeability is 10-5 m/s and the water-table occurs at about 3 m below ground level.After laboratory and pilot-scale studies on representative samples of in-situ soils with TPH between 2700 and 7000 ppm a flow-sheet is proposed for reducing TPH values below the acceptable limits in Italy, namely 700 ppm for hydrocarbons with more than 12 carbon atoms and less than 250 ppm for those with fewer.On the basis of indications provided by laboratory tests a mainly physical treatment process of soil washing has been developed. This is used to clean-up soil from a site polluted by non-volatile hydrocarbons with a high TPH value. The process involves a high-density attrition stage followed by wet screening at 0.5 mm and then wet-gravity separation of the minus 0.5 mm fraction in the centrifugal field.The gravity separation products consist of a light fraction with particle size finer than 15 micron which contains most of the pollutants, and a heavy coarse fraction with TPH values conforming to the limits set by Italian regulations (less than 700 ppm hydrocarbons whose structure contains more than 12 C atoms, and less than 250 ppm of hydrocarbons with less than 12 C atoms)."

The Mount Isa mine in North West Queens- land produces a total of nearly 10 million t/yr from separate copper and silver lead zinc orebodies. Sampling information is mainly obtained from diamond drilling on 30 to 40 metre centers in both types of orebodies. For the copper orebodies the majority of the core is analysed for copper content using a non-destructive bulk analyser developed by the Australian Atomic Energy Commission. The diamond drill core in the silver lead zinc orebodies is usually sam- pled as sawn half core and assayed in the com- pany laboratory using a variety of methods dependent upon the level of metal content and/or the elements required. Underground development is sampled where additional information is required to improve the ore reserve estimate. The copper areas are sampled using a standard 2.0 m by 2.0 m chip sample of the wall. The chips are taken on a 250 mm spacing. Lead areas are sampled using a 100 mm wide by 4 mm deep channel over intervals determined by the area geologists. The massive, irregularly shaped copper ore bodies are mined as large sublevel open stopes and pillars. Ore reserve estimation on both a production unit and global scale is routinely carried out using a geostatistical system developed in-house and running on a Sperry 1100 mainframe computer. Copper grade, tonnes and the Kriging var- iance are estimated at points on a user defined grid. The Kriging program uses 10 m assay composites from diamond drill core and underground chip samples. One average (rela- tive) variogram is used throughout the main copper orebodies. The validity of using an average variogram was verified by the original geostatistical study undertaken in the late 1970's.

Accurate and economic control of line and grade on long tunnels, large structures, excavations and waterways, has been a problem to surveyors and engineers for decades. The conventional method of surveying, incorporating a level, transit, and a number of surveying technicians, has proven, in the past, to be a very expensive and time-consuming operation. Alignment with a laser has solved most of the problem. Figure 1. With the advent of the Perkin-Elmer Model 5620 Construction Laser, use of laser light is now both dependable and economically feasible for unlimited applications in modern construction and surveying. The laser projects a continuous, narrow red beam of brilliant light, providing a constant alignment reference, and will not interfere with operations.

The development of DP(Dual Phase) steels and TRIP(Transformation Induced Plasticity) steels has received much attention in recent years due to their high strength and simultaneous good ductility, which provides the potential for weight reduce and resource savings on certain components in automobile or other industries. So a controlled rolling process was simulated in the present study by thermomechanical simulator (Gleeble 1500) for producing DP steels on a kind of low carbon steel containing a small amount of Si and Cr. F+M dual phase microstructures have been obtained during continuous cooling processes of a wide cooling rate range from 10°C /s to 60°C /s. The grain size of the dual phase steel developed can be refined to less than 5 m through the mechanism of deformation induced ferrite (DIF) transformation. The ultrafine ferritic grains are equiaxed with high-angle boundary, and the martensite islands of an average size less than 5m disperse uniformly in the ferrite matrix. The ultrafine martensite islands not only inhibit the growth of ultrafine ferritic grains and improve the bonding of F/M interface, but also increase remarkably the strain hardening rate in the processing of the present Dual-Phase steel. As a result, the tensile strength of ultrafine grained Dual-Phase steel reaches higher than 1000 MPa. The result shows that an ultrafine grained Dual-Phase steel of low carbon and low alloy is promised to exhibit desired F+M microstructure by means of this new TMCP process.

Several controlled recirculation systems are in operation wor1dwide. As an unconventional technique of ventilation the implementation of such a system requires particular safety conditions and a well-founded set of feasibility factors and parameters. On the other hand, many mines in Romania are facing problemms in meeting the growing ventilation demands, so that controlled air recirculation could give an answer. The present paper presents the results of the work in this field, based on a detailed theoretical approach. Parameters wich must to be taken into account were identified and analysed, numerical simulation are carried out and an experimental test-scale model is presented.

Extraction and Characterisation of Extracellular Polymeric Substances from the Mineral Surface During Bioleaching of Chalcopyrite Concentrate A mixed culture of moderately thermophilic microorganisms was used to bioleach chalcopyrite concentrate in a stirred tank reactor. The results show that up to 84.7 per cent of copper extraction could be achieved in 24 days at a pulp density of 6 per cent. The leaching rate of chalcopyrite concentrate tended to increase with an increase of dissolved total iron concentration. Furthermore, the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) on the surface of the chalcopyrite concentrate was extracted and analysed. EPS was extracted at the first, third, eighth, 16th and 24th day during bioleaching, which mainly consisted of proteins, lipids, sugars and ferric irons. After the eighth day the total amount of EPS remained relatively constant. However, the amount of ferric iron in the EPS decreased in a large scale. The ore residue analysis indicates that the decrease of ferric iron was mainly due to the formation of jarosite on the mineral surface.

"The Key Lake uranium mine is the largest single uranium producer in the world. It is owned 2/3 by Cameco Corporation and 1/3 by Uranerz Exploration and Mining. Cameco is the operator. Current production is fourteen million pounds per year of uranium oxide (U308).The mine's location is 570 kilometres north of Saskatoon on the southern edge of the Athabasca Basin approximately at latitude 57° 11 'north and longitude 105° 34' west. Access to the mine is by an all-weather road and a private airstrip.The mill was commissioned in 1983. A molybdenum plant was constructed in 1989 in response to increasing molybdenum content in the yellowcake or final product. Early test work had showed that the first ore body to be mined, the Gaertner deposit, would present few problems with regards to molybdenum in the product. However, the test work also showed that the higher molybdenum content of the Deilmann ore, the second Key Lake orebody to be mined, would result in increased molybdenum concentrations. Without the molybdenum plant, penalties would become excessive and some product might not accepted by the refineries.This paper will describe the current Key Lake mill process with emphasis on the molybdenum solvent extraction process. It will cover the chemistry of the process, process development in the mid 1980's, and current operating practices.The Key Lake milling process consists of five individual plants, crushing and grinding, leaching -counter current decantation (CCD), solvent extraction, yellowcake/crystallization and bulk neutralization (Figure 1. In the present context of rapid industrialization, production of Lead-Zinc metals from low grade materials, residues and wastes can make substantial contribution to the supply of these metals in India. Recovery from secondary sources also plays an important role in conservation of mineral resources and lower power consumption. Conscious effort is therefore, required to increase the secondary metals which, besides saving in energy cost will also help in waste material management and keeping environment clean. The major thrust is, therefore, needed in this direction. During all these years, the Indian Lead- Zinc industry has made sustained efforts for recovery of metals from low grade ores and from metallurgical wastes and residues. The paper identifies the treatment of low grade ores by various technologies and techniques and the treatment of metallurgical residues and wastes generated during primary Lead and Zinc smelting in India. Some of the major achievements in past decade have also been elaborated in the paper. The strategies to be followed for continuing treatment of low grade ores and waste materials by adopting newer, environmental friendly technologies, in consonance with the rigid standards being adopted by most of the countries including India. have also been dealt with in the paper.

Isothermal transformation, or "aus-tempering," of a carbon-containing aus-tenite at elevated temperatures yields so-called "intermediate products." Their structure and properties are, for a given hardness, rather different from those of "tempered martensite" obtained on conventional quenching and tempering.' Several investigators2,3 have found that for high carbon and slightly alloyed steels the intermediate products formed at temperatures close to that of the martensite reaction possess strength properties superior to those of tempered martensite. The structure of these low temperature, intermediate products is generally acicular (bainite) but clearly different from that of martensite. However, at higher austempering temperatures, between 1000 and 1300°F (540 and 700°C) carbon steels were found to exhibit a rather low ductility.4,5 Thus notch bar tensile tests showed the ratio between notch strength and regular tensile strength to decrease with increasing austempering temperature. For ductilities below a few percent this notch strength ratio is a measure of ductility, according to investigations on low alloy steels.637 Furthermore the presence of intermediate products formed unintentionally on quenching was considered as responsible for the low ductility and impact energy of some heat treated steels,8 These intermediate products could result from partial transformation at the so-called "nose-temperature" where the rate of the transformation is a maximum. Tempering improved such mixtures of martensite and intermediate products, their properties approaching those of tempered martensite of equal hardness. The following investigation constitutes an attempt to determine certain strength properties of a partially austempered and subsequently quenched low alloy steel, namely, a chromium steel (SAE 5140) The structures formed by such a treatment should consist of a mixture of intermediate products formed on austempering and a martensite formed on oil quenching from the austempering temperature. It was intended, by varying the austempering time, to vary the quantity of the intermediate products between zero and 100 pct. The austempering temperature of 860°F was selected after extensive preliminary tests close to the nose-temperature. Austempering at this temperature yielded an acicular intermediate product. .Additional tests under less exacting conditions were made for an austempering temperature of 950°F where the intermediate product appeared to be very fine pearlite. Adsorption of acrylamide based homo and copolymers on hematite was investigated as a function of phe nature of the polymer charge and functionality of the polymer. Effect of addition of sodium dodecylsulfonate and dodecylamine hydrochloride was also studied and was determined to result in an increase or decrease in the amount of polymer adsorbed depending on, the charge characteristics of the surfactant and the polymer, pH of the suspension, concentration of the various species and the order in which these species were added to the system. The surfactant adsorption under given conditions on the other hand, was found not to be affected by the presence of the polymer molecules. The data is analyzed to elucidate the mechanism of adsorption of polyacrylanide type polymers on hematite both with and without the surfactant species king present in the system.

Na literatura são descritos basicamente dois modelos de relações entre resistência mecânica e parâmetros microestruturais: (1) relações entre parâmetros microestruturais médios do coque e índices de ensaios mecânicos e (2) quantificação dos poros mais críticos a resistência mecânica, a partir de determinados critérios que levam em conta o tamanho e a forma dos poros. Nesse trabalho coques laboratoriais produzidos a partir de carvões com propriedades distintas foram caracterizados pela associação das técnicas de microscopia ótica e análise de imagens. Os principais modelos da literatura de relação entre resistência mecânica e parâmetros microestruturais foram avaliados. Foi demonstrado que nenhuma das relações estudadas conseguem descrever o comportamento mecânico de coques produzidos a partir de carvões de alto teor de componentes inertes (>40%). A partir desses resultados duas novas abordagens foram realizadas a fim de obter modelos que contemplem tais coques: (1) introdução de uma nova relação entre resistência mecânica e os parâmetros microestruturais e (2) um novo critério de classificação das regiões derivadas de componentes inertes como críticas a resistência mecânica.

One of the most difficult tasks associated with placer mining is the sampling of the deposit. More placer projects have failed due to inaccurate assessment of the reserves than to any other reason. Within the realm of placers, those containing valuable minerals with a high unit value .are more difficult to sample than those with larger bulk, lower unit value minerals. Some items to consider when sampling a placer deposit are as follows: A) A relatively large size sample is needed for accurate valuation of the ground being tested. Placers are composed of many sizes of gravel which makes a representative sample difficult to obtain. B) When sampling placers for high unit value minerals such as gold, any error in mineral content of the sample will be magnified in the calculation of reserves.

Peñasquito is Mexico's largest gold producer, consisting of two open pits - Peñasco and Chile Colorado - containing gold, silver, lead and zinc. Over the next three years, mining activities in the pit are expected to be focused on lower grade ore in the upper parts of the Peñasco pit while stripping is emphasized to ensure an economically optimal pit shell design to maximize the net asset value of the operation. By 2019, Peñasquito’s gold production is expected to benefit from an improvement in mined grades as it recommences mining higher grades at the bottom of the Peñasco pit and significantly enhanced metallurgical recoveries with the planned completion of the Pyrite Leach Project ("PLP").

OPERATING a "muck stick" never appealed to me. It always seemed a terrible waste of energy to "put rocks in the box" by hand-particularly when my own personal energy was involved. But during the past forty years, there have been periods-more or less extended when I was compelled, against my finer instincts, to muck or quit eating. For about the same length of time, I have devised schemes to make mucking faster and more painless. There was always something mechanically wrong with these designs-too many;" parts to wear out and need replacement, and excessive cost incidental to a complicated mechanism. The idea of a shovel unit comprised of a single, rigid assembly which would roll from a digging to dumping position solved the problem of simplicity and durability.
