This report presents the results of a study of the overturning Stability of Front End Loaders and the development of an Obstacle Detector to warn of Obstacles in the blind regions of the vehicle. The contributing factors have been identified, the FEL stability characteristics have been determined and six overturn warning indicators were fabricated and two were field tested in a mine operation over an extended time period. A simplified overturn indicator, based on the principle of sensing wheel load, was designed, constructed and field tested. The principle was demonstrated to be sound, however, the method of sensing wheel load must be revised. An obstacle detector capable of detecting a man sized target at ranges of two feet to one hundred feet was designed. A "Breadboard" device utilizing existing microwave devices was constructed and tested successfully.

Natural chromium-bearing spinels (chromites), which are used as refractory materials in basic steelmaking, are the only commercially important chromium ore and are also encountered as difficult-to-separate contaminants in ore deposits of potential economic value. Techniques for characterization and separation of ore materials frequently are dependent on the magnetic properties of the constituent minerals. An experimental program was initiated to explore the effects of temperature and of simple mechanical and thermal treatments on the static magnetic properties of several ore-grade natural chromites. Studies of the temperature dependence of the magnetic properties showed that the natural chromites, which are dilute in the magnetic ions Fe and Cr, order magnetically only at cryogenic temperatures. However, mechanical treatment in the form of crushing produces a magnetic component that is ordered at room temperature and that is of sufficient strength to alter magnetic-separation characteristics. The additional magnetic component apparently is associated with surface structures which develop during crushing and disappear after heating to above about 500°C. Preliminary studies indicate that this surface structure enhances the susceptibility of the chromite grain surfaces to gas reactions at moderate temperatures.

O EOF é um forno básico a oxigênio caracterizado pelo conceito de pré-aquecimento da carga sólida baseado na energia da corrida anterior. Mesmo com um sistema supervisório, a operação era totalmente manual. O trabalho consistiu no desenvolvimento e implantação de modelos matemáticos, objetivando atingir a temperatura e composição química programada para vazamento. O sistema de equações consideram todas as entradas metálicas com as respectivas composições químicas e define a quantidade necessária de energético ou refrigerante, além da adição de cales conforme a basicidade e teor de MgO objetivados na escória. O desenvolvimento passou inicialmente por um conhecimento profundo do processo, dada a excelência e originalidade do forno EOF, que é diferente dos demais convertedores a oxigênio. A seguir, foram definidos padrões e práticas operacionais que garantissem a reprodutibilidade do processo, para, finalmente, permitir o cálculo através de modelos matemáticos. Com a automação do processo foram conseguidos expressivos ganhos de produtividade, redução no consumo de materiais, aumento do rendimento metálico e menor consumo de refratários.

Superduplex são aços inoxidáveis bifásicos de alta liga que, para alcançar suas excelentes propriedades mecânicas e de resistência à corrosão necessitam de um rígido controle sobre sua microestrutura, em especial sobre dois aspectos: relação ferrita/austenita e precipitação de fases deletérias. As transformações metalúrgicas que ocorrem durante o ciclo térmico de soldagem podem modificar tais aspectos e, consequentemente, causar grave degradação das propriedades destes materiais. Buscando contribuir na investigação de parâmetros adequados para a soldagem destes aços, o presente estudo tem como objetivo avaliar a influência do aporte térmico e do gás de proteção sobre tais transformações por meio da avaliação da microestrutural final de juntas soldadas. Para isto seis chapas do SAF2507 foram soldadas via processo GMAW utilizando três aportes diferentes (0,5; 1,5 e 2,2 kJ/mm) e dois gases de proteção distintos. Após a soldagem, a microestrutura das juntas foi caracterizada via microscopia óptica e microscopia eletrônica de varredura e os resultados mostraram que o aumento do aporte térmico elevou significativamente a quantidade de austenita tanto na ZTA quanto na ZF e que a utilização de gás de proteção contendo 2% de N causou aumento de até 17,9 pontos percentuais na quantidade média de austenita na ZF. Adicionalmente, observou-se que os dois menores aportes provocaram a precipitação de fases secundárias na ZTA, com morfologia semelhante à nitreto de cromo.

TEMPERATURE considerations are of prime importance in the manufacture of steel products-front the time the metal is produced in the melting furnace, where the chemical reactions have a direct dependence on the temperatures of the bath, to the final machining of work on which the expansion due to the rise in temperature of the forgings during machining must be allowed for. Methods employed and difficulties encountered in some of the more important steps are here outlined. These methods are the result of years of experience, with many methods of temperature determination, and have been successful in routine works practice in the manufacture of high-quality steels. In the operations of melting, forging, and heat treatment, if the product is to be of the best quality each operation must be carefully followed through. A high-quality product cannot be obtained even with the best heat treatment if the steel is poorly melted, and, conversely, the best steel ever made may he spoiled by inefficient heat treatment. To perform the best work in any of these operations, temperatures must be accurately regulated.

At BHP Billiton Iron Ore Newman Joint Venture (NJV) ore is railed from four separate mine operations in the Newman area to Port Hedland, where the ore is screened, crushed and blended to produce lump and fines NJV products. Each mineÆs grade varies separately, so it is important that a centralised system is in place to control the overall blend and ensure that the products meet customer expectations. It is important that grade- related decisions are built into the normal production process and have minimal impact on production rates. A continuous stockpile management system (CSMS) covering the whole NJV production process is used to generate the daily crushing schedule, taking into account all currently available ore sources. Innovative additions to the CSMS provide more accurate information to support decision making by the mine schedulers; for example, blasthole estimates are continually adjusted for bias compared to crusher and port rake grades; lump-fines (L-F) grade split and beneficiation plant upgrade algorithms are updated on a continuous basis, and the dilution effect, which impacts on reported port rake grades, is removed.

Chile is the world's largest copper producer which is mostly in the form of sulfides for which froth flotation is the most efficient concentration process. As a result a concentrate that contains high concentrations of copper sulfides such as chalcopyrite, chalcocite and enargite is obtained. In the last decades processing of ores containing high concentrations of enargite (Cu3AsS4) has continuously increased in Chile, which is related to the fact that ore deposits nawadays are more heterogeneous and complex. Enargite is a mineral that contains arsenic and its presence in the copper concentrates implies severe penalties. In addition, the shortage of fresh water has driven the search for new alternative sources of water, among which seawater has proved to be one of the most attractive. The objective of this research is to study the behavior of the enargite in the process of flotation using seawater, and at the same time to compare its behavior with the results obtained using conventional water. The study was carried thorugh micro-flotation tests using pure samples of enargite, at pH values ranging from 4 to 11, both in fresh and seawater. PAX and MIBC were used as collector and frother respectively. Micro-flotation tests were also done at different redox potential conditions so that the effect of the surface oxidation of enargite was evaluated in seawater. The results indicate that the recovery of copper from enargite is reduced in seawater compared to fresh water, in particular at the pH values close to those of the formation of the first hydroxy complexes of Mg and Ca. In general, the experimental data indicate that the floatability of enargite is strongly affected when seawater is used, in particular at oxidizing conditions. These results suggest that Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions contained in seawater interact with the surface of enargite forming hydrophilic species.

ONE of the main functions of the United States Bureau of Mines is to obtain and disseminate information that will promote safety in and around mines, and the health and safety of employees engaged in mining. Serious health and safety conditions arising out' of contamination of air in metal mines by dust, fumes from explosives and fires, and absorption of oxygen by timber and other causes, led the Bureau of Mines to cooperate with the United States Public Health Service in the study of dust occurrence and ventilation in metal mines in various parts of the country. Dr. A. J. Lanza, of the U. S. Public Health Service, and Edwin Higgins, mining engineer of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in 1915, made a detailed study in the mines around Joplin, Mo., their reports1 are now available. In 1916, 1917, and 1918, a similar study was made in the Butte, Mont., region by Doctor Lanza and D. Harrington, mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines; the reports of this investigation will be available soon. In 1919, the study was continued in some of the Arizona mines by D. Harrington, of the Bureau of Mines, and G. E. McElroy and Dr. R. A. Koronski, of the U. S. Public Health Service, the underground work being completed in June, 1920; these reports are now being prepared for publication. In the spring of 1920, the scope of the work was extended, with D. Harrington in charge as supervising mining engineer, and short studies made in the mines of the Coeur d' Alenes in Idaho and around Oatman, Ariz. It is hoped soon to extend the work into mines of California, Nevada, Colorado, Michigan, and Minnesota, and ultimately to other states should the mining companies be willing to cooperate.

Views about the proper aim of public policy are, of course, matters of perspective and debate. Regardless of perspective, one would assume some consensus around the view that public policy ought to encourage mine operators to seek independent and critical assessments of worker safety and health at their operations through voluntary auditing. However, a review of the law on this topic shows that there is little to no manifestation of such a policy. Indeed, the balance of this paper, with a couple of exceptions, is devoted to the existing legal pitfalls that should be considered before a safety and health audit is conducted at a mine. While attorneys, particularly litigators like the author, might tend to focus on the potential problems that could arise from any given situation, the fact that most of this paper is devoted to potential legal concerns associated with auditing is a realistic reflection of the current state of the law. Specifically, this paper addresses the interplay between voluntary safety and health audits conducted at mines regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and the administrative and civil legal issues related to such audits. The paper first provides an explanation of how and by whom an audit is conducted. The paper also addresses whether voluntary safety and health audits may be considered privileged and kept confidential in administrative and civil proceedings. Finally, selected legal issues related to such audits that could arise in administrative and civil litigation are discussed.1

THE rate of output of a rock crusher is based upon a certain space relation, the calculation requiring that the size and position of the jaws, the principle of motion, and the speed of the machine be known. The result is a calculated maximum output. The purpose of this paper is to develop a method of calculating this maximum output, to judge the general applicability A utility of such a calculation, and, so far as possible, to record calculated values as a basis for the comparison of actual results, or for estimating the capacity of a new crusher or of a standard crusher working under new conditions. A method for calculating the capacity of crushing rolls, which has been in common use for a long time, is well presented by R. H. Richards.1 The output is conceived as a ribbon of rock, of which the breadth, thickness and length are governed respectively by the width of the rolls, the space, between them, and their peripheral velocity. The weight of the rock thus crushed in a given time can be calculated from its specific gravity, after applying a factor representing the percentage of voids in the hypothetical ribbon. The calculation of crusher capacity is made in a somewhat similar manner. While the action of rolls is simple, with few irregularities in operating conditions, in rock crushers the material advances intermittently, usually under the force of gravity alone, and is subjected to a variety of variable conditions. The effect of these variable influences upon' the calculation of capacity is now to be shown. In this paper, capacity will be discussed quite apart from any consideration of mechanical efficiency; that is, results will be stated not in terms of output per horsepower, but of output for a given machine when operated at a known speed, constructed and adjusted to receive material of a known size, and to yield a product having a definite maximum coarseness.

The strategic mission of the South African mining industry is to extract the mineral assets in an energy efficient, economical and safe manner. Drilling has received particular attention in the last few years. As the operations move away from the power source, conventional and old drilling technology result in poor penetration rates, increased drilling shift lengths, slow face advances and limited stope efficiencies. The need for an alternate mining method, performed by a skilled workforce, to increase productivity, has led to the development of the electric rock drilling system for in-stope mining operations. The focus of this paper is a systematic evaluation of the electric rock drilling system as a function of production and technical parameters, in the platinum orebody. The particular electrical reticulation system is illustrated. Power usage, problems experienced, and solutions are described. The safe use of the recently developed drill is elaborated upon by describing protection devices. The testing and certification process, for approval by the recognized authorities, are documented. Known detrimental factors of high noise exposure, vibrations levels and oil emissions are reviewed. The writer would define the term "Use Classification" as a discussion of the qualities that coal should possess to fulfill the requirements of the industry or process in which it is to be used. The general problem of the gas industry is to transform the maximum amount of the thermal energy in coal into a gas of specified quality. The qualifications that a coal should possess to be useful in the gas industry are complicated by probably a greater number of factors than in most industries. The most important of these is the delivered price of the coal. While the- general problem of the industry is as given above, yet the actual problem is the production of gas of a specified quality at the minimum cost. The relative cost of coal and the selling prices for the residuals which are influenced to a large extent by geographical locations are of determining importance as effecting the cost of the gas. It is unfortunate that we cannot disassociate cost figures from a discussion of the desirable characteristics and this results frequently in the use of coal in one location that will be looked upon as quite impossible in another location more favorably situated. Without going into any discussion of the freight rate problem we might merely point out that in general the freight on the coal is equal to or greater than the mine price. It must be evident, therefore, that price must always be considered in any discussion of the effect of the characteristics of a given coal. Two Classes of PRocesses In discussing the characteristics of coals for use in the industry, we must divide the processes in use into two classes: (1) where the coal is destructively distilled at high temperatures resulting in the formation of coke in the liberation of gas and by-products, and (2) where the coal is consumed by combustion in air or steam with a production of gas and by-products leaving only clinker as a residue. Geotechnical engineers are usually well-acquainted with contractual and noncontractual documents used to convey geotechnical information in a construction project - typically sub-surface exploration logs, engineering and geology reports, project plans, and contract specifi­cations. Both owners and contractors rely on com­plete , appropriate and accurate information in contract and informational documents to achieve the successful delivery of projects, com- municating requirements to meet budget, schedule, safety, performance and other goals. Traditionally, contract documents have been created and delivered through paper plans and reports or electronic paper equivalents such as PDFs. Geotechnical information is often included in these documents in an unstructured format. Geotechnical requirements may be shown on the plans, or included in the project special provisions, standard provisions or gov­erning geotechnical agency manuals. Simplified geotechnical logs may appear on plan sheets with more complete logs available elsewhere. Additional documents may reference field, lab, geologic, materials or other additional reports, which are often neither readily available to on-site workers nor contractual in their nature. Nearly always, geotechnical infor­mation is provided in a static format, rather than as structured digital data, decreasing its utility to contractors for bidding, design analysis and con­structabilityevaluations.

Earth Sciences: The standard of living of the world's people depends upon human initiative, investigation, and know-how in exploiting the earth's resources. The Earth Sciences-geology, mineralogy, geophysics and geochemistry, meteorology, geography-are basic sciences dealing with those problems concerning the origin, constitution, and utilization of the earth's materials. The development of these fields in one department provides the greatest opportunity for direct contact and stimulus for scientists and teachers working in related fields. In the Earth Sciences, geology and mineralogy are obviously closely related. As rocks are the materials of which the earth is made, so in turn minerals are the constituents of the rocks. Conversely, a study of earth structures and the interplay of physical and chemical forces in the earth is necessary in order to understand the origin and source of minerals. Building on the basic core of knowledge of earth processes, earth structures, and earth history, the geologist will continue to push out the frontiers of stratigraphy, structural geology, pale-biology and petrology with growing insight into principles that control surface and subsurface rock conditions. (communication to the Secretary*).-Mr. Johnson recognizes that connate waters must be driven, outward toward the earth's surface. He considers the ascent due to the settling and packing of the underlying sediments and to the formation of gas within the rocks, supplemented by abyssal pressures. The origin of the methane in the sedimentary strata probably is not simple. There are three possible modes of origin: (1) as marsh gas formed near the surface and entrapped in the sediments; (2) from abyssal sources; (3) by the decomposition of organic matter buried in the sediments. The abyssal source is generally negligible, and in all cases doubtful. The third origin is the most important in the gas fields. A fourth mode of origin, by the dissociation of liquid hydrocarbons, frequently has been suggested, but it is improbable, because crude oils are exothermic. Therefore they have no tendency, to split or decompose at low temperatures, as do endothermic substances, such as coal, which is geologically by the loss of methane, water, and carbon dioxide. This cannot happen to a hydrocarbon until its temperature of dissociation (" cracking point") is reached, which is over 250'.C. for the most easily cracked hydrocarbons and over 400° C. for others. Engler says that the dissociation of fats and waxes into oils is an endothermic process, thereby unconsciously nullifying his own theory of the dissociation of these substances at low temperatures. However, recently I have found reason to think that heat is liberated by the disruption of the molecules of fats and waxes, as it is in the molecular decomposition of the substances of wood, coal, etc. If this tentative opinion is correct, and Engler wrong, then it seems that the Engler-Höfer hypothesis of the origin of oil becomes not only possible, but even probable.

Sticking and breakage of iron ore pellets during high temperature reduction can result in several operational challenges during shaft furnace ironmaking. With the shift to H2-based DRI processes and decreasing iron ore quality, this issue becomes more prominent. It is therefore important to understand how the iron ore chemistry and mineralogy affects the sticking and breakage of pellets inside the shaft furnace. This study provides a review of the mechanisms that lead to sticking and breakage of pellets inside the shaft furnace. The sticking index of pellets is related to the rate of metallic iron production as well as the precipitation morphology of product iron. Sticking of pellets is also enhanced by the formation of low-melting slag phases. The breakage of pellets inside the shaft furnace is often associated with the mechanical load of burden and pellet swelling, which is caused due to iron whisker or protruded iron formation. This paper investigates how the composition of iron ore, particularly the presence of different impurity oxides such as SiO2, Al2O3, MgO, CaO and alkali oxides in the pellets, influences the sticking and swelling indices. The effect of ore mineralogy on these adverse behaviours is also discussed.

This paper describes full-scale tests on ten large bored piles with grouted end conducted for three projects in the urban area of Fuzhou city. Test program included site investigation, pile installation and end grouting. The piles were instrumented with strain gages and load cells to determine load distribution in the piles. Test results showed that end grouting improves load-settlement performance of bored pile. End grouting significantly increases the shaft resistance near the pile end. The better the end condition, the greater the shaft resistance. The average shaft resistance of the bored piles with grouted end is much higher than that of piles without grouting.

Owing to an upsurge in export earnings. Cameroon made substantial economic Progress in 1978 and 1979. With a real growth estimated at 6%, the gross domestic product (GDP) for 1979 surpassed $5 billion.2 Crude petroleum production was providing a new potential in 1978 and 1979 for achieving national self-sufficiency. Among other benefits, crude petroleum exports were helping to offset the escalating costs of refined petroleum imports and to reduce the 14% to 17% annual rate of inflation. Over the 4 years prior to 1978, Cameroon's petroleum imports increased by 12.1% in volume annually, while the import cost increased by 24.5% annually to about $105 million. Total export earnings for 1978 were $805 million,3 to which crude petroleum contributed $25.3 million and crude aluminum product exports contributed $25.9 million. Petroleum exports had increased to about $240 million in 1979 and were in third place after coffee and cacao. Total imports for 1978 were valued at nearly $1 billion. The volume of petroleum imports decreased in 1979 to 552,000 tons, compared with 622,000 tons in 1978. The European Economic Community (EEC) countries purchased over 75% of total Cameroonian exports and provided most of the Nation's imports. The United States purchased $12.4 million in petroleum exports from Cameroon in 1978.
