Equilibrium partial pressures of gaseous HCl and H2O over aqueous binary and ternary solutions of HCl and AICls were calculated or estimated in the range of 20° to 110° C, and up to saturation with AlC13?6H2O. The results were extended to solutions containing less than 10 wt-pct FeCl3 by assuming that FeCl3 and AIC13 are equivalent on the molar basis, since both salts have trivalent cations with a cammon anion. The ionic activity coefficient of HCl and the equilibrium constant for dissolution of gaseous HCl were also computed. This research is part of the effort by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, to provide thermodynamic data to expand the technology base relevant to the extraction of alumina from nonbauxitic domestic raw materials.

This paper is not intended as a scientific discussion of the combustion of oil but is written from the standpoint of an operator who has the experience and qualifications necessary to guide others in producing the most economical results in the use of liquid fuels. Oil, in this paper, usually means petroleum or its products but incidental reference is made to other liquid and gaseous fuels, so that the term may be considered as referring to all liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons in comparison with solid fuels, as coal and wood. However, only a few of the principal factors in the use of oil as a fuel can be given. The present, and prospective, high price of coal is causing users of fuel to renew inquiry as to the merits of other forms of fuel for industrial purposes. Crude oil (petroleum) is proving to be one of the world's most valuable mineral resources. The recent discovery that oil underlies a considerable area of the United States, Mexico, and other parts of the world to a greater extent than was formerly believed and the large production of some of the wells in these areas shows the probable quantity of fuel oil that may now be available. Through the energy of Lord Cowdrey, who was one of the pioneers of the oil industry in Mexico, oil has been discovered in England; some prominent geologists believe that it may be found in quantity in Great Britain. For years, oil has been known to be of great value in the manufneture of metals. It has proved incomparable in forge shops, steel foundries, heat-treating furnaces, and wherever accuracy of temperatures is essential, or where a maximum output is desired as well as quality of metal. In some types of equipment, the output produced with oil as fuel is double that obtained with coal and at a reduction of 50 per cent. in the cost of the fuel. For example, in drop-forging plants, the metal is always waiting for the man when oil is used as fuel, whereas with coal, the man must wait for the metal to become sufficiently heated. It has only been since January, 1919, that the oil supply could be relied on for boiler service, owing to the war conditions and the inability to get oil tankers for the delivery of the oil from Mexico to Atlantic ports; but now a constant supply is assured, and many manufacturers are installing it in their power plants. This paper describes work done by Placer Dome Technical Services Limited, a subsidiary of Barrick Gold, and Nautilus Minerals Inc. in support of the conceptual design of a subsea mining system. It describes an overall concept design plus specific studies into mechanical excavation at depth. The concept design includes one or more subsea excavators connected to a suction riser, which transports the cut material to a shipboard dewatering and offloading system. A multi-phase investigation was performed into the mechanical excavation of seafloor massive sulphides at depths of around 1600m. Rock samples were recovered and tested for rock properties and cutting behaviour. A small pick drum cutter was procured and tested on a representative concrete slab in a lab and tested again while submerged in a test tank. Finally the cutter was tested on a massive sulphide ore body at 1600m depth. The cutting performance results, e.g. pick forces and specific energies, should provide valuable input to the design of future full scale subsea mining systems.

This is valid whatever the region in the world, it is just a question of time. On one hand, the normative environmental pressure is increasing through more severe regulations and controls on all pollution sources and production materials. [ ] Furthermore, more impurities are extracted and captured, more the volume of the related wastes is increasing. But disposal costs are increasing, disposal areas for wastes are restricted, markets for wastes are limited and technologies for waste treatment are, most of the time, not available. On the other hand, for most of the extractive industries, the costs required to get access to refine primary raw material are killing the profitability of the industry. Definitively, a technological and economical breakthrough is ongoing: extractive industries have to increase their feed from secondary material and to be involved more and more with the recycling business.

Neste trabalho estudamos uma liga fundida de cobalto com composição química próxima à da superliga comercial Stellite 6com composição eutética sendo a matriz constituída por uma solução sólida de cobalto, cromo e molibdênio que embebe uma grande quantidade carbonetos eutéticos de cromo. O objetivo deste estudo é avaliar a resistência ao desgaste bem como os micromecanismos dominantes através de ensaios de microabrasão. Foram usados três diferentes tipos de lama abrasiva, sílica, alumina e carbeto de silício com uma concentração de 0,1 g/cm3, carga de 0,3 N e uma distância deslizada de 48 metros. O menor coeficiente de desgaste foi obtido com sílica e o maior com carbeto de silício. O micromecanismo dominante foi o riscamento com riscos em toda superfície da amostra e presença de indentações apenas na matriz.

The computer assisted generation of geological models to represent the geometry of, and grade distribution within, orebodies is a rapidly growing area of the geological profession. Such models are increasingly used as a necessary starting point in determining the mineability of mineral deposits in terms of practical mine design and economic considerations. The transition from traditional techniques such as field or underground mapping and the manual calculation of grade and tonnage estimates, as well as related activities such as the interpolation of cross-sections, the use of stereographic projections, core logging and hand contouring, to computerized applications, is by no means complete. In fact, many geological professionals deliberately avoid the use of computer simulations based on the perception that the resulting models are simplistic and that their construction is not founded on sound geological principles. The purpose of this paper is to assess current thinking on this topic by considering; (a) an overview of advances in the drafting of geological maps, (b) the theoretical basis for multi-dimensional geological modelling, (c) the case for combining traditional and modern techniques, and (d) the benefits to the mining value chain.

Introduction A staccato beat rings out across the Australian bush. The stamps are at work, slowly pulverizing gold-bearing ore for a patient, grizzled prospector. This is the State Battery near Marvel Loch, a tiny 22.6-t/d (25-stpd) capacity gold plant operated by the Western Australia government. It is one of many such plants located in remote corners of Western Australia and the Northern Territory. They are miniature custom mills operated for the benefit of prospectors and small mine operators. These state batteries are so called because they are operated by state governments and because the principal item of machinery in the plants are stamp batteries. They are fascinating anachronisms - throwbacks to times past, a century ago, to the hard and heady existence of gold rush days. Marvel Loch plant Typical of these operations, and perhaps a trifle more sophisticated than most, is the plant near Marvel Loch, a small center for mining and farming about 400 km (250 miles) due east of Perth. Marvel Loch. The name evokes visions of a pristine lake set in a cool, green, misty glen of the Scottish highlands. Actually, it is probably a hot, dry salt pan somewhere nearby. Just where the "loch" is difficult to discern. There is no sign of it on the map.

THE object of this paper is to offer some suggestions to assist metallurgists to supervise the operations of flotation plants. We do not yet thoroughly understand what "flotation" is or "why minerals float" and all attempts that have been made to explain the phenomena have been based on theory or imagination, and have not been capable of substantiation by practical demonstration, or even by laboratory tests; but it is wellknown that particular minerals will float in a liquid under certain specified conditions, and that some other minerals will not float under those conditions, and that, if a mixture of the two classes of minerals be subjected to those conditions, there will be separation of the minerals, of which one class will float and the other will remain unfloated as a residue. The duty of the flotation expert is to so control the operations and the conditions of the liquor as to obtain the best commercial result from the ore he is treating. The chief controlling factors in a flotation plant appear to fall under the following eight headings, all of which are important:1. Crushing.2. Rate and regularity of feed.3. Density of pulp.4. Temperature.5. Addition agents.6. Condition of circuit liquor.7. Agitation.8. Aeration.

On the steep slopes of the Kootenays, 15 to 20 miles south of Nelson, B. C., are a number of ore occurrences (Fig. 1). One that has many features of mining and geological interest is the Ymir Yankee Girl Gold Mines Limited. Discovery of this property was made in 1899 at an outcrop on the hillside, some 2500 ft. above the village of Ymir. This proved to be a branch vein 20 ft. long leading to two main veins, the Yankee Girl and the Spur (Fig. 5). The ore pattern as now delimited shows a remarkable increase in ore area with depth below the outcrop. This recent development is of interest particularly in view of the fact that the property was nearly condemned, professionally. Another interesting feature, which has a bearing upon its history, is the persistent excess of tonnage produced from period to period over visible reserves. This is not ascribed to lagging mine development, but to detailed vein characteristics, which we will endeavor to make clear by giving a description of the veins and their surroundings. HISTORY AND PRODUCTION Little interest_was_evidenced-in this-distriet until the building of the railway in 1893 provided easy access and the discovery of the Ymir mine in 1896 attracted attention. As a result, the Ymir Yankee Girl group of claims was staked in October 1899. In 1907, an American syndicate took over the property and subsequently extended the 50-ft. drift and opened the present 400 and 540-ft. levels. In 1908, the Syndicate, without recording any shipments in the meantime, dropped its lease, which was taken up by H. L. Rogers, who bonded the Yankee Girl group. Rogers shipped 2622 tons of ore, mainly from the uppermost stope in the mine, which is reported to have yielded

As far as is known at the present time, important ore occurrences at Mount Isa are restricted to the Urquhart Shale. These occur at Mount Isa itself, and some 13 miles north along strike at the Northern Leases.The primary silver-lead-zinc and copper orebodies occur as adjacent but discretc entities in lithologieally distinct host rocks. The copper orebodies occur in an envelope of "Silica Dolomite", whereas the silver-lead zinc orebodies occur in shale typical of the Urquhart Shale in general.At both Mount Isa and the Northern Leases, secondary lead orebodies occur at thc surface representing primary stratiform silver-lead-zinc sulphide accumulations in the fresh rocks at depth.Secondary copper orebodies are known only at Mount Isa, where they have formed in favourable environments, but unlike the secondary lead orebodies, not in the positions of the former primary mineralization that gave rise to them. The secondary copper is localized in shale remote from the point where the copper was released into solution by weathering. It was derived from very low grade fracture fillings and disseminations of chalcopyrite in the outcropping or suboutcropping crest of the "Silica Dolomite".Primary silver-lead-zinc orebodies arc oxidized without significant transport or secondary enrichment, but secondary copper orebodies arc characterized by considerable transport and extreme secondary enrichment.The original water table stood at approximately 1,150 ft (mine datum) and for the majority of the mine area controlled the base of complete oxidation fairly closely.An oxidized zone approximately 175 ft deep is general in the Urquhart Shale.Structures affecting ground conditions have influenced oxidation and leaching of the silver-lcad-zinc orebodies, and have had effects vital to the formation of secondary copper orebodies.

This paper is simply a summary, prepared at the request of the Council of the Institute, of the report of Mr. Albert Ladd Colby, of South Bethlehem, Pa., presented at the New York meeting (October, 1896) of the Association of American SteelManufacturers, on " The Advisability of the Endorsement by the Association of the United States Standard Gauge, approved by Act of Congress, March 3, 1893, to the Exclusion of the Birmingham Gauge, the .Brown and Sharpe, and all Others:" a subject on which, at the Pittsburgh meeting (April, 1896) of the said Association, Mr. Colby had been appointed as a committee. The report favors the adoption, not of the United States standard gauge to the exclusion of others, but of a decimal system of gauging all materials in thousandths of an inch, thus doing away entirely with arbitrary gauge-numbers running in inverse order to the actual thickness. The American Institute of Mining Engineers originated this movement. The report of its committee on a standard wiregauge, presented in October, 1877,* recommended the abandonment of the system of fixed gauges for commercial use, and of the system of representing the diameters and sizes by numbers, and the adoption, in lieu thereof, of the system of expressing sizes in thousandths of an inch or fractions of a millimeter, and the use of the micrometer-gauge as a means of measuring sizes. Experimental results are presented for the rate of solution of nitrogen in a iron in the temperature range 750° to 873°C and in 6 iron in the temperature range 1410° to 1470°C. It is shown that the rate controlling process is diffusion of nitrogen into the iron. The diffusiting of nitrogen in a and 6 iron is derived from the results, and the temperature dependence of the diffusivity is represented by the equation D = 7.8 x e- 18,900/RT sq cm per sec. The solubility of nitrogen in a and 6 iron, in equilibrium with 1 atm pressure of nitrogen, has been measured. Using these results and other available data, it is found that the variation of the logarithm of nitrogen solubility with the reciprocal of absolute temperature is nonlinear. In an Appendix, some results of Darken and Smith are presented for the rate of solution of nitrogen in iron using ammonia + hyidrogen mixtures. These data also support the view that diffudsion of nitrogen in iron is the rate-controlling process when ammonia + hydrogen mixtures are used. A considerable effort has been made to obtain data on the solubility1-5 and diffusivity of nitrogen in a iron6-l2 because an understanding of the effect of nitrogen on the properties of steel must be based on an accurate knowledge of the properties of nitrogen in pure iron. However, no information is available concerning the kinetics of solution of nitrogen in a and 6 iron. Recently the authors13 have investigated the rate-controlling mechanism operating in the kinetics of solution of nitrogen in y iron. This study was directed to determine the rate-controlling processes for similar reactions with a and 6 iron as well as to establish values for the solubility of nitrogen in equilibrium with nitrogen gas in a and a iron. EXPERIMENTAL The procedure used in experiments to determine the rate of solution in cylindrical iron rods was the same as that described in a previous communication.13 Ferrovac E grade iron used in all experiments contained the following impurities in weight percent: C, 0.005; Mn, 0.001; P, 0.002; S, 0.006; Si, 0.006; Ni, 0.025; Cr, 0.002; V, 0.004; W, 0.02; Mo, 0.01; Cu, 0.001; Co, 0.01; 0, 0.007. After cleaning the surface, the iron rods were treated in an atmosphere of purified hydrogen for 17 hr before the reacting gas was introduced for known experimental times. After quenching, the samples were sectioned radially and analyzed for nitrogen. In addition to experiments using rods, iron foils were used in the measurements of solution rates of nitrogen in a iron. The foils of two different thicknesses were prepared by cold rolling Ferrovac E grade iron cylindrical rod to 0.051 and 0.152 cm. Foil samples were used in a rectangular form 5 cm long and 1.25 cm wide. The specimens were thoroughly cleaned of surface oxide with fine emery cloth and degreased with carbon tetrachloride immediately before entry into the furnace. The experimental procedure was the same as that used in the study with rods. At the completion of an experiment, the foil samples of the nitrogenized iron were analyzed for nitrogen after discarding 0.3 cm from the perimeter of the specimen. Iron foils were nitrogenized and denitrogenized in the a and 6 range with a gas mixture of 95 pct N and 5 pct H for times varying from 5 min to 2 hr. Results obtained for the average composition of nitrogen in iron for these experiments are presented in Fig. 1. Prior to the denitrogenization experiments, the samples were saturated with nitrogen at 1000°C and 0.67 atm N, giving a uniform nitrogen concentration of 0.0204 pct. According to the known a-y phase boundary in the Fe-N system,14 this composition lies within the ferrite region at temperatures 750" to 850°C. Use of this initial nitrogen content insured that reaction occurred between the gas and a single solid phase, a iron. Examples of the results for the mean concentrations of nitrogen in cylindrical iron rods, 0.356 cm radius for both the a and 6 ranges are given in Fig. 2. Typical examples of the results obtained for the radial distributions of nitrogen in rods are presented in Fig. 3. In an earlier day, a moderate-sized 600 tpd mine could easily require 60 working faces and might use five supervisors. The miner had a tonnage rate as an incentive and was largely his own boss. With the advent of conventional mining machine crews, the typical pattern of resource used changed radically. The number of work places could be cut by a factor of ten, but supervision only by a factor of somewhere around three, or at most, five. Obviously, supervision was increased. Capital use rose at the same time by a factor of approximately eight. Materials used, such as powder and bits, probably in- creased in both quality and unit cost, too. It certainly required a better-trained man to run the machines, but fewer miners were needed. It is clear that each input factor such as land, labor, capital and management, has changed significantly and it would be foolish to attribute all the gain to improved machines. However, concentration of work was a vital consideration in the change, sketched above, and such focusing of work in fewer areas could not have occurred without high capacity mining machines.

"Uranium is a unique commodity. It is both a metal and a fuel, It has both commercial and military uses. It yields ""clean energy "" but presents environmental concerns. All of these factors have an impact on the commerce of uranium.Being a metal, uranium is extracted from ore like many other metallic minerals. As a fuel, it is subject to the vagaries of energy commodity market forces. The history of uranium in the first nuclear weapons has led to nation al governments carefully controlling production and sale of uranium. The spectre of radioactive contamination of the environment adds further to the public concern over the disposal of low-level radioactive wastes from uranium processing and use.There have been a number of excellent reviews on the commercial aspects of the uranium industry. In this discussion, these aspects will be briefly summarized to provide a general picture of the strengths of the Canadian uranium industry and the pressures to which it is being subjected currently. The principal thrust of this paper will be to outline Canada's resource strength and to identify some factors which will affect Canada's ability to continue holding a sizeable share of the world uranium market."

Maintaining a continuous mining process during thunderstorms is one of the primary challenges in Peru's open-pit mines. Safety protocols necessitate the establishment of exclusion zones to minimize the risks of unplanned detonations. During such conditions, loading and hauling equipment must be relocated or, in the worst case, halted, directly affecting productivity (t/h). Implementing a wireless initiation system mitigates the risk of unplanned detonations during electrical storms by eliminating the use of electrical cables that are susceptible to electrical discharge. This study documents the implementation of this system in a copper mine located over 3,500 meters above sea level in Peru, where electrical storms between December and March necessitate modifications to blasting schedules and limit the number of drills fired per event. Through a test using wireless detonators, a key performance indicator (KPI) was established to ensure safe and continuous operation during thunderstorms. The results were significant: 20 blasts were successfully executed, firing approximately 5,000 holes and moving around 10 million tons of material, all without safety incidents or critical operational deviations, achieving zero misfires and no scheduled blast suspensions. Shovels SH001 (ore) and SH002 (waste) continued to operate together for an additional 100 hours continuously during thunderstorms, generating a potential saving of USD 3.3 million by continuously sending ore to the plant during the testing period under stormy conditions. Additionally, the blasting initiation time was reduced by 25%, eliminating two activities that involved the use of surface connection cables. This reduction led to over 150 hours of decreased personnel exposure to interactions with vehicles and environmental hazards such as dust and noise. Furthermore, the number of holes fired in a single event increased by 50%, enhancing the blast tonnage capacity and reducing equipment stops due to evacuation and reentry from two to one.

Coal mine fires pose a constant danger to the safety of miners and to their livelihood. Underground mine fires pose an added hazard because of the confined environment with remote exits. Enactment of safety regulations [30 CFR2 75 and 771 for under- ground coal mines and surface coal operations has greatly improved the safety of miners. However, mine fires and fire injuries remain serious hazards for all coal mining operations. This report analyzes mine fires and fire injuries for all U.S. coal mining categories (underground coal mines, surface of underground coal mines, surface coal mines, and coal preparation plants) during 1990-1999. Fires involving contractors are also included in the analysis. Similar analyses (for underground coal mines only) by the former U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) were reported by McDonald and Pornroy [I9801 and Pornroy and Carigiet [I9951 for 1950-1977 and 1978-1992, respectively. For comparison purposes, data for 1978-1 992 are mentioned in the "Underground Coal Mine Fires" section of this report. Detailed analyses of mobile equipment fires for all underground and surface coal and metal/nonmetal mining categories during 1990-1999 have recently been reported by NIOSH [De Rosa 20041. Risk rate values (fire and injury risk rates) for the 10-year period (1990-1999) and for five successive 2-year periods within the 10-year period are derived. Risk rate values for individual states for the 10-year period are also derived. Other variables by state and time period include employees&apos; working hours, lost workdays, and coal production (underground and surface coal mines only). The number of fire fatalities is reported by time period. Variables such as ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material are reported by five 2-year periods only. Furthermore, the number of fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires has been analyzed by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location. For comparison purposes, the major fire and fire injury findings for all coal mining categories have been reported. The data in this report were derived from "Injury Experience in Coal Mining" [MSHA 1991a, 1992,1993,1994a, 1995a, 1996, 1997, 1998b, 1999c, 20001, "Fire Accident Reports" [MSHA 199 1 b,c; 1994b; 1995b,c; 1998a,c,d,e,f; 1999a,b,d,e], MSHA "Fire Accident Abstracts" internal publications, and verbal communications with mine personnel. Mining companies are required by 30 CFR 50 to report to MSHA all fires that result in injuries and fires that are not extinguished within 30 min of discovery. A small number of fires lasting <30 min without injuries reported in the "Fire Accident Abstracts" have been included in this report. The analysis in this report will provide the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and the mining industry with a better understanding of the causes and hazards of mine fires and fire injuries. It will also form a basis for developing future fire research programs.

Biodegradation of cyanide by microorganisms isolated from solids previously exposed to cyanide has been investigated. The anaerobic cyanide biodegradation showed good, short-term removal of cyanide in the presence of nutrients (medium A). This system retained metabolic activity at cyanide concentrations up to 300 ppm at pH 10.5. Microscopic examination of stained specimens revealed that the bacteria were Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacilli. Strains capable of cyanide decomposition were identified as Pseudomonas and Alcaligenes. The kinetics of biodegradation were found to be first order with respect to cyanide concentration, and the overall reaction rate constant is k = 0.102 day-1. Studies with Na14CN showed that 17 % of 14C transformation went into the cells, 18 % into carbonate and 47 % into bicarbonate.
