The world-class Neves-Corvo deposits were intersected by drilling in 1977. They occur in the (Carboniferous) Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB), Western Europe&apos;s largest stock of base metals (see Bamga, 1990, in Dallmeyer RD, & Martinez E, eds, Pre-Mesozoic Geology of Iberia, Springer-Verlag). Massive and stringer sulfides in the area sum up to about 200 Mt (109 kg), in five main orebodies (Neves, Corvo, Graca, Zambujal and Lombador). They include unique, extremely high grade copper and tin ores ( - 33 Mt Cu ores, -7.5% Cu, and -4 Mt Sn ores, -2.6% Sn, - 12.5% Cu). Also present are -50 Mt polimetallic ores (-6% Zn, 1.2% Pb, 64 ppm Ag). The remaining are relatively low grade pyritic massive and stringer sulfides (Cu < 2%. Sn < 1%, Zn equivalent < 4%). The geological setting is one of bymodal submarine volcanism, with predominant felsic, explosive volcanism and associated sedimentation (detrital and chemical), which took place on a shelf-facies, quartzite-phyllite basement (of Upper Devonian age). The plate tectonic setting has been the object of much debate. Current interpretations favour that the IPB volcanism took place in a tensional fore-arc region, associated with oblique subduction and collision (Silva et al., 1990, same volume as above). At Neves-Corvo there are many different ores, that may be grouped in four main types: fissural (at the base), breccia, massive (intermediate) and "ruban6 " (at the top). Fissural ores seem to correspond to stockworks in contrasting types of host rocks (gray to black shale, sericitic, chloritic and graphitic, and light gray volcanic rock). Massive ore may contain significant shaly gangue, at the base of individual orebodies, and silica-rich (cherty) varieties towards the top. The more sulfide-rich varieties predominate, and are usually well banded.

This report summarizes a study conducted to determine the state of the art of various rock removal systems and their capabilities. The objective of the study was to determine if currently manufactured equipment can adequately accomplish rock removal in surface mine reclamation applications. Evaluations of state reclamation regulations, with regard to topsoil rock content, were made to determine the rock removal requirements. The major categories of equipment studied are rock pickers and rock rakes. The impact of rock removal implementation on the reclamation operations is discussed in detail.

"In the last decade Afitex developed the Draintube™ geocomposite, which provides simultaneous drainage and waterproofing functions. This new type of drain tubes planar geocomposites (DTPG) differs from other geocomposites as the drainage core is composed of multiple corrugated and perforated pipes instead of biaxial or triaxial nets. It is furthermore associated with needle-punch stitched layers of non-woven geotextiles, which act either as capillary mediums or as filters.In this paper, the structure of the Draintube™ drainage composite is presented along with its key properties and the drainage mechanism associated with its particular structure.The relevance of this kind of structure is then reviewed based on past and current laboratory bench evaluations and field installations for mining applications such as the covering of acid rock drainage (ARD) tailings for the Central Manitoba Mine (Canada) site-rehabilitation; and as a pregnant solution collection layer in heap leach pads.Some of the demonstrated critical advantages of Draintube™ in the mining industry are as follows: reduction of the thickness, hence lower volume of granular drain layers improvement of fluid and gas collection and reduction of the hydraulic load reduction of secondary collector network mechanical protection of the sealing membrane fast and economical installation of interlifts stability under extreme conditions (compression, temperature, pH) increased stability of entire covering system and reinforcement of protection of dykes filtration of the covered material customised drainage positive connection of the geocomposite to collector pipes enable leaks detection (using a conductive textile layer) with an electrical test.CITATION:Saunier, P, Ameglio, L and Durkheim, Y, 2015. The Bureau of Mines investigated techniques for dewatering slurries from talc-processing operations to improve water reclamation and pro-duce dewatered solids suitable for disposal. Various flocculating reagents were evaluated, and a nonionic polyacrylamide was found to be most effective in a specialized flocculation dewatering technique. The flocculation dewatering method was applied in laboratory batch tests and in continuous tests using a static screen, a belt-roller device, and a clarifier-thickener laboratory unit. In continuous tests using the unit, wastes of 3.5 pct solids were dewatered to 56.9 pct solids using 0.03 Ib of flocculant per ton of dry solids treated.

The Ok Tedi copper and gold project, located in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea, commenced operations in 1983. The open cut mine has undergone several significant transformations throughout its project life including changes of ownership, mine life extensions and varying production performance profiles. As of today, the Ok Tedi Mine is a 100 per cent PNG owned company (67 per cent State and 33 per cent Western Province and Communities) and has a life-ofmine plan extending out to about 2032.

The Coal Mine Inspection Branch of the Health and Safety Division, Bureau of Mines, was established to carry out the provisions in Public Law 49, 77th Congress, H. R. 2082, approved May 7, 1941. The series of major disasters that beset the coal-mining industry in 1940 aroused public interest in mine-safety measures, and the act 18 the direct result of this rekindled interest. Under the provisions of the act, the Secretary of the Interior, acting through the Federal Bureau of Mines, is authorized and empowered to make, or cause to be made, annual or necessary inspections and investigations in coal mines, the products of which regularly enter commerce or the operations of which substantially affect commerce. The principal functions of the Federal coal-mine inspectors are to determine the causes of accidents and occupational diseases in coal mines and then endeavor to eliminate or ameliorate them (1) by revealing, through personal conferences with mine personnel, correspondence, and published reports, the unhealthful and unsafe conditions and practices existing in the mines and (2) by recommending practical means for correcting the conditions observed. The act does not provide any enforcement powers, and therefore compliance with the inspectors&apos; recommendations is not mandatory; it does give Federal coal-mine inspectors the right to enter coal mines for inspection purposes.

O presente trabalho estudou o metal de solda do aço inoxidável duplex UNS S32205 empregado na indústria de petróleo e gás natural, analisando a influência da variação da largura temporal nas características microestruturais do cordão de solda obtido por soldagem com laser pulsado de Nd:YAG. Os resultados mostraram que a dimensão da zona termicamente afetada é extremamente pequena e a microestrutura do metal de solda apresenta menor fração volumétrica de austenita em relação aos processos convencionais.

Blasting is the most important activity in the mining industry, the world over. It is a well known fact that only part of the explosive energy gets utilized in causing the actual rock fragmentation. The rest of it gets converted into blast-induced ground vibrations and noise. Though blast vibrations cannot be totally eliminated, it is possible to minimize them by optimization of blast parameters. This paper highlights various in-house efforts put forth by the author towards site specific blast optimization and the monitoring of blast vibrations. It also deals with the prediction curves developed by regular regression analysis for the prediction of ‘blast vibrations’, ‘peak particle velocity’, ‘safe charge’ for various blasts.

Over the period 2000 to 2003, roof falls have accounted for 4 to 14% of the fatalities in underground mining operations. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to reduce the frequency, exposure, and risk of these events through an ongoing program of field and laboratory studies. One area of research involves the evaluation of polyurethane grouting technology that is commonly used to stabilize fractured mine roof strata. Concurrently, NIOSH is conducting work to evaluate the application of ground penetrating radar for advanced delineation of problematic mining areas. In this study, NIOSH partnered with Sub-Technical, Inc. who injected a polyurethane grout (also known as glue) into a roof area of NIOSH’s Safety Research Coal Mine. The mine roof area was scanned using ground penetrating radar technology before and after grout injection in an attempt to determine the extent of grout infiltration. A comparison of the pre-and post-grouting radar records showed a significant change at a mine roof depth of about four to five feet. The interpreted radar records were then compared with drill core information, borescope evaluation of roof-bolt holes in the study area, and underground observations. At this site, the interpretations of the radar records correlated with data obtained from the core holes, borescope evaluations and underground observations. This study showed that ground penetrating radar technology can be a useful tool for detecting changes in mine roof due to the injection of the grout.

This report is one of a series describing investigations within the Missouri River Basin in Montana made by mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines Minerals Division, Region II. The primary purpose of these investigations is to provide information to agencies of the Department of the Interior and and others concerned with the planning of Federal power developments in the basin. The report contains such factual data as have been authorized for public distribution. The field investigations in Broadwater County were made during the late fall of 1948 and the summer of 1949. Virtually all known metallic mineral deposits and some nonmetallic mineral deposits within the county were investigated. However, some long inactive mines and prospects on which little or no information is of record may have been omitted inadvertently. Many of the mines and prospects have been inactive for extended periods. Most of the underground workings now are inaccessible. Because of such conditions, impressions gained by the inspection of surface features have been supplemented necessarily, where possible, by information obtained from Federal and State publications.

Increase the productivity of domestic mining operations by improving the performance of rock drilling systems. Approach Investigate the use of chemical solutions at zero surface charge concentrations as drilling fluid additives to enhance penetration rates and extend bit life. Background Bureau researchers have investigated the use of chemical additives to enhance drilling performance and have found that the most efficient drilling occurred when the drilling fluid was able to maintain a zero surface charge (ZSC) on the rock surface. Laboratory drilling studies using 5/8-inch diameter diamond-impregnated coring bits on rock types such as quartzite, granite, taconite, and marble. Cationic compounds were used as the surface charge neutralizing additives during these tests. The drilling studies demonstrated enhanced drilling performance, however, only at the singular additive concentration that produced the ZSC condition. Bureau researchers made a breakthrough when they found that polyethylene oxide, although a nonionic polymer, was able to maintain the ZSC condition over a wide range of concentrations. Success using polyethylene oxide as the drilling fluid additive during subsequent laboratory tests prompted testing under field conditions.

This Bureau of Mines report contains information on 63 water flood projects in Colorado. Water was injected in 10 formations located in 58 oilfields. Specific field data presented include location, discovery, development, water supply, fluid injection, oil and water production, oil reserves, and oil recoveries by primary and secondary methods. An estimated 3.5 billion barrels of water has been injected to recover approximately 533 million barrels of oil, a ratio of 6.57 to 1. Most of the injection water is from alluvial deposits, although produced water is used in many fields. Injection water treatment is not a major problem. Appraisal of project success or failure in this report is based on technical, rather than economic, information.

The Farlin Creek study area encompasses 610 acres managed by the Bureau of Land Management in Beaverhead County, Montana. A mineral survey was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey in 1984. Bureau of Mines personnel reviewed literature and county mining records, and examined prospects or mineralized areas to determine its mineral potential. Geological Survey personnel evaluated the area by geochemical sampling and geophysical surveys. The study area is included in the Mount Baldy mining district. Nearby mineralized Quartz veins or tactite bodies apparently do not extend into or exist within the study area. No significant gold or economic detrital minerals were found in samples from streams draining the area. All of the study area is leased for oil and gas.

As escórias de forno elétrico a arco (FEA) têm diversas funções, entre elas a melhoria da eficiência energética através do fenômeno da espumação. Por isso o estudo das escórias é de suma importância nos FEA’s. Um dos fatores que determina a qualidade da espumação e a sua eficácia é presença de partículas sólidas na escória. A saturação de MgO é extremamente importante, pois além de garantir partículas sólidas garante também a compatibilidade química para minimizar o consumo do refratário. Neste trabalho, foi feito o estudo da saturação de MgO para escórias no sistema CaO-SiO2-FeO-MgO-Al2O3, onde avaliou-se a influência que a basicidade binária, os teores de FeO e do Al2O3 tem sobre o mesmo. Foram feitos diagramas ternários, onde viu-se as diferenças que os teores de Al2O3 tem sobre os campos líquidos e as demais fases presentes. Foram feitos os diagramas de saturação isotérmicos (ISD’s) encontrando os mesmos pontos de dupla saturação quando comparados com os diagramas ternários. Fez-se uma validação dos ISD comparando a posição de diferentes corridas com a energia elétrica consumida. Quanto mais próxima a corrida está da linha de saturação menor será seu consumo energético.

This paper treats of the history and development of the Sierra Mojada mines in the north of Mexico, the character and extent of the ore-deposits, and the methods of mining the ore. The growth of the smelting industry in Mexico in recent years is, to a large degree, due directly to the output of the lead-bearing ores from the Sierra Mojada mines, and at the present time (1901) new smelters are being built, looking to this district for their supply of lead-ores. These mines are located in the southern part of the State of Coahuila, in the Republic of Mexico, in latitude 27 24&apos; N. and longitude 103O 43&apos; W. of Greenwich. The last account of the Sierra Mojada published in our transactions was contributed by Mr. Richard E. Chism, in October, 1886.* Since that time some 3,000,000 tons of ore have been extracted from the mines, and much additional information has been developed regarding the mineral deposits. Since 1886, the Mexican Northern railroad, 78 miles in length, has been built from Escalon, connecting the camp with the Mexican Central railway, a trunk-line from El Paso, Texas, to Mexico City. The distances by rail from Sierra Mojada to the principal smelting-centers are as follows : To Torreon, Coahuila, Mex., 179 miles; to Monterey, Nuevo Leon, Mex., 422 miles; to El Paso, Tex., U. The selection and provision of mineralogical services to assist in developing a GeoMetallurgical program for a Cu Porphyry Mine in South America is covered in this paper and presentation. The objectives of the study were to provide a rapid mineralogical scoping protocol to support and confirm results of sequential Cu leach data and to provide detailed mineralogical analysis of four composites and products on which locked cycle test-work were performed. Results showed good reconciliation was achieved between measured chalcopyrite and secondary Cu mineral contents with leach data using a linear intercept mineralogical procedure by TIMA (Tescan Integrated Mineral Analyser), as well as a generally positive correlation between pyrite and Cu-sulphide grain size. Size-by-size analysis of Composite feeds and test products was used to outline comparisons between feeds on a mineralogical basis and provide liberation and association data with which to diagnose and better explain performance. Identifying key mineralogical drivers to Cu recovery and concentrate grades using these results, a greater understanding of the role of chalcocite and pyrite on metallurgical performance was established. INTRODUCTION As a global supply of copper, porphyry copper deposits are typically very large, often in excess of a billion tons of ore (Keeney, Walters, & Kojovic, 2011; McMillan & Panteleyev, 1980) with grades typically between 0.2 and 1.2% Cu, and up to 2% Cu in places. They are also a source of gold. The complexity of copper porphyries arises from their classically zoned nature, the type of host rock, as well as whether or not they have been overprinted by oxidation, weathering and supergene enrichment (Sillitoe, 2011). Zones of alteration and other geological attributes give rise to varied mineralogy, ore mineral textures and material properties, all of which result in different processing characteristics. Due to the interdependencies of geological and processing characteristics, it is vital to study links between the geology at the macro-scale and mineralogical features down to millimeter and micrometer scale (mineral content and texture) and their influences on mineral processing behaviour (Cropp, Goodall, & Bradshaw, 2013). The growing field of GeoMetallurgy aims to provide an Orebody Knowledge framework by which to gather such information as it pertains to: (1) Understanding and predicting likely flotation response; (2) Guiding relevant test work to investigate and validate links, interdependencies, theories and data interpretation/evaluation; (3) Populate a block model with relevant information and; (4) Implement and refine the model for ongoing optimization and control. Specific questions addressed by using mineralogy often include flotation diagnostics as aids to interpretation, causes of dilution and losses to tailings, as well as guidance to sampling for test work (Cropp et al., 2013).

ABSTRACT Based on mineralogical characteristics and processing techniques required, gold ores can be classified into 12 types: gold placers, quartz vein-lode ores, oxidized ores, silver-rich ores, iron oxide copper-gold ores, porphyry copper-gold ores, iron sulphide ores, arsenic sulphide ores, antimony sulphide ores, bismuth sulphide ores, telluride ores, and carbonaceous sulphide ores. The bulk mineralogy and gold deportment of each ore type differs and may have a significant impact on ore processing and metal extraction. This paper summarizes the bulk mineralogy and gold deportment in some major types of gold ore and discusses the potential impact of gold deportment on gold metallurgy.

The decline of the beehive coking industry was inevitable, but it had filled the needs and economy of its day. A beehive plant required neither large capital investment to construct nor an elaborate and expensive organization to run. The ovens were built near mines from which large quantities of easily-won coking coal of excellent quality could be taken, and handling and preparation costs were thus at a minimum. The beehive process undoubtedly produced fine metallurgical coke, and low yields were considered to be the price that had to be paid for a superior product. Few could have foreseen that the time would come when lack of satisfactory coking coal would force most of the beehive plants in the Connellsville district, for example, to stay idle; and if there were those like Belden who cried out against the enormous waste which was leading to exhaustion of the country&apos;s best coking coals, there were many more to whom conservation was almost the negation of what has since become popularly known as the spirit of free enterprise. As for the recovery of such by-products as tar, light oil, and ammonia compounds, throughout much of the beehive era there was little economic incentive to move away from a tried and trusted carbonization method simply to produce materials for which no great market existed anyway. With the twentieth century came changes that were to bring an end to the predominance of beehive coking. Large new steel-producing corporations were formed whose operations were integrated to include not only the making and marketing of iron or steel but also the mining of coal and ore from their own properties, the quarrying of their own limestone and dolomite, and the production of coke at or near their blast furnaces. As the steel industry expanded so did the geographic center of production move westward. By 1893 it had moved from east-central to western Pennsylvania, and by 1923 was located to the north and center of Ohio. This western movement led, of course, to the utilization of the poorer quality coking coals of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. These coals could not be carbonized to produce an acceptable metallurgical coke in the beehive oven, but could be so treated in the by-product oven. By World War I the technological and economic limitations of the beehive oven as a coke producer were being widely recognized. After the war the number of beehive ovens in existence dropped steadily to a low of 10,816 in 1938, in which year the industry produced only some 800,000 tons of coke out of a total US production of 32.5 million tons. The demands of the second World War led to the rehabilitation of many ovens which had not been used for years, and in 1941, for the first time since 1929, beehive ovens produced more than 10 pet of the country&apos;s total coke output. Production fell off again after 1945, but the war in Korea made it necessary once more to utilize all available carbonizing capacity so that by 1951 there were 20,458 ovens with an annual coke capacity of 13.9 million tons in existence. Since that time the iron and steel industry has expanded and modernized its by-product coking facilities, and by the end of 1958 only 64 pet of the 8682 beehive ovens still left were capable of being operated. Because beehive ovens are cheap and easy to build and can be closed down and started up with no great damage to brickwork or refractory, it is likely that they will always have a place, albeit a minor one, in the coking industry. The future role of the beehive oven would seem to be precisely that predicted forty years ago by R. S. McBride of the US Geological Survey. Writing with considerable prescience, McBride declared: "A by-product coke-oven plant requires an elaborate organization and a large investment per unit of coke produced per day. Operators of such plants cannot afford to close them down and start them up with every minor change in market conditions. It is not altogether a question whether beehive coke or by-product coke can be produced at a lower price at any particular time. Often by-product coke will be produced and sold at less than cost simply in order to maintain an organization and give some measure of financial return upon the large investment, which would otherwise
