The strength of sinter could affect the permeability and CO gas utilization of blast furnace, and one of the main impacted factors of sinter strength is crack. With the widely use of vanadium-titanium sinter in China, the blast conditions of some blast furnaces became worse since the vanadium-titanium sinter has been added. However, there have little public research for this phenomenon. In this paper, the influence of titanium content on the sinter ore phase structure and crack were studied by DMRX polarizing microscope. In addition, the influence of basicity and oversintering on the sinter ore phase structure were also investigated. The observed results of vanadium-titanium sinter were compared with typical sinter in China, and the influence law of titanium content on the sinter ore crack was obtained.

THE many kinds of iron and steel may be grouped into two general classes. First, there are the common steels and cast irons, made in enormous tonnages each year and used for the construction of buildings, ships and bridges, for pipe, for reinforced concrete highways, for the so-called tin cans, and by the railroads and other industries for which a low cost material is suitable. Second, there are the alloy steels and alloy cast irons, which are alloys of the chemical element iron and one or more of a large number of special elements such as manganese, silicon, nickel, chromium, vanadium, tungsten, and molybdenum. Alloy steels and irons are more costly than the common grades but their higher cost is, for many applications, justified by their superior properties, leading to ultimate economies or other advantages. They may be harder, stronger, tougher, or more resistant to rusting than the common varieties, and so are extensively used for tools, for ornamental work on buildings and in the automotive, aircraft, and other industries for, which the higher cost is compensated for by the higher quality.

Since the decade of the 1990s is nearly upon us, I have focused on what I see are the likely trends featured in new large underground coal mines 10 years from now. I do this from the vantage point of having been involved in the installation of large mines for more than twenty years. Little of the equipment resources we have available today was unknown when I entered the coal business in 1960. There were continuous miners, longwalls and diesel-powered equipment in Europe, monitoring systems, computers, heavy media separation systems, froth flotation and conveyors then as there are now. A substantial evolutionary process has occurred with these and other mining machines and processes. Some evolved only to die out, such as boring-type continuous miners; others, such as longwall systems, flourished. My intuition tells me that since there have been largely evolutionary rather than revolutionary developments in the near past, the same is true of the future, at least for the next 10 years. In other words, the elements of what are in the future are with US now. Some, such as computer-based applications, may evolve beyond our wildest dreams -but I doubt it.

They were noted, not with a view to investigating the point discussed by Mr. Clark, but in course of a test on a working scale to determine the com parative saving from a given free-milling ore on copper and silvered plates respectively. In every case the bullion assayed was the result of a separate clean-up on a considerable quantity of ore. The ore varied widely in grade and in other respects, but the runs bracketed in the table were made at the same time, in adjoining batteries, and on similar types of ore. In a * Result modified by the addition to the bullion-shipment of a little impure bullion left over from previous clean-ups.. On these occasions, the strips of copper were removed from the tables, and: their lower surfaces were cleaned. Hence the higher yield reported.

Safe rapid drift development results principally in reducing exposure of underground workers to the working face. This reduction in exposure is not achieved until either the rock walls have been suitably scaled or sufficient support has been put in place. Rapid drifting enables quicker access to orebodies (increasing returns), higher production rates and a resultant lower cost of mining. The Mining Innovation, Rehabilitation And Applied Research Corporation (MIRARCO) has been developing technology and a methodology for safe rapid drift development within the underground metalliferous mining industry. In terms of rock scaling for underground metal mines, there is still considerable use of manual and mechanical impact rock scaling techniques. Two main issues result from this approach. The first is that in highly stressed or highly fractured ground, a decision has to be made as to when sufficient scaling has taken place. This is not always easy to do and hence operator judgment is a crucial element in this approach. During a baseline study of current rock scaling practices, a wide range of scaling practices were observed within five different underground mining operations; this demonstrates the difficulty inherent in the rock scaling quality decision making process. The second issue is related to the exposure of workers to freshly created rock surfaces. In manual scaling techniques this is unavoidable and despite the best scaling practices, accidents still occur. In an attempt to provide an alternative scaling technology, MIRARCO has been investigating highpressure water jet scaling for removing loose rock as part of the drift advance process. This technology not only provides a means by which scaling practices can be engineered (remove the loose material you want to in a given rock mass condition), it is also quicker and easily automated. Automating the scaling process removes workers from exposure to freshly created rock surfaces and also enhances the application of spray-on liners through improved adhesion of these support types to the rock surface. This paper describes the water jet scaling technology research and methodology for safe rapid drifting within the underground metaliferous mining industry and highlights the key issues and major drivers behind their continued development at MIRARCO.

This paper reviews the work of these three Parker Centre project teams, and highlights those instances where the results have been applied to plant practice.

"Effect of attrition scrubbing on the recovery of platinum group metals(PGMs) from automotive catalytic converter was discussed. The attrition scrubbing as comminution and separation process was effective for the recovery of the catalyst layer, ?-alumina, from ceramic supporting matrix, cordierite, by physical impact and shearing action between particles in the scrubbing vessel. The catalyst layer was dislodged from the surface of the supporting matrix into fine particles less than 45µm by attrition scrubbing. The production of fine fraction less than 45µm increased as the residence time for attrition scrubbing increased. The fine fraction obtained at the residence time of 40min contained 19.25% CeO2, 1.93% ZrO2 and 418.8ppp PGMs. The recovery of ?-alumina in the fine fraction increased as the residence time increased. Simultaneously, the recoveries of CeO2, ZrO2 and PGMs increased and reached up to 82.9% CeO2, 78.7% ZrO2 and 78.9% PGMs at the attrition scrubbing time of 40min. The production of the fine fraction and recovery of ?- alumina increased when the solid concentration and initial feed size increased.IntroductionThe automobile catalytic converters contain appreciable amount of PGMs. Currently several million tons of used catalytic converters are disposed annually worldwide, each containing about 0.5-1g of platinum and 1-2g of all PGMs1). The recovery technologies of PGMs from spent catalytic converters have been thoroughly reviewed by numerous researchers since last decades. Two types of methods, wet and dry processes, have been commercially operated. In the wet process, the PGMs on the spent catalytic converters were dissolved mostly in the form of chlorocomplex, MCl6 2-, by contacting with aqueous solutions. Subsequently the resulting solutions are treated to concentrate and the precious metal ions are reduced by introducing metals such as Al, Fe and Zn in the concentrated system2). In the dry process, the spent catalytic converters are melted, in some case with CaO, at an elevated temperature to produce a low viscous slag. The PGMs in the melt are separated by allowing them to adsorb on Fe or Cu having high specific gravity7). Although highly pure precious metals could be obtainable, the recovery technologies of PGMs currently operated seem not to be cost-effective since PGMs embedded in these types of catalytic converters are present in very small quantities."

Most metals and alloys processed undergo a solidification processing step. Increasingly, there is a growing number of solidification processing routes that involve rapid solidification of the alloy. These include strip casting, high pressure die casting, 3D printing, and atomization for the production of powders or spray formed parts. By contrast, there are few experimental techniques developed to study the solidification path of alloys during rapid solidification. Amongst these laser melting and solidification, Electromagnetic Levitation (EML) and Impulse Atomization (IA) are the most prominent. Of relevance is the formulation of the solidification path of an alloy and the resultant identification and quantification of metastable phases and their relationship to processing conditions. This typically involves the understanding of the interplay between undercooling and cooling rate for the various phases that form. This presentation will outline some of the methodologies developed to quantify phase fractions and their solidification path as a function of processing conditions using EML and IA.

"In Russia, 1.1 million tons of mercury-containing waste are stored. The amount of mercury in soils and heaps of industrial enterprises is estimated at 3000 tons; in dumps, concentration tailings, sludge dumps of the gold mining industry up to 6000 tons have been accumulated. Mining is one of the main sources of mercury emissions in the natural environment that poses a real threat to the natural environment. At present, the process of amalgamation is prohibited and not applied in gold extraction. The application of amalgam technology in gold mining led to the accumulation of highly toxic products in the form of gold-bearing amalgam and metallic mercury, with a mercury content of dozens and even hundreds of times greater than the maximum permissible concentration for soil (1). Therefore, mercury-containing tailings constitute an ecological hazard to the environment. According to published data, at waste storage sites of industrial enterprises, up to 50 tons of mercury enter soil annually, and up to 3.5 tons pollute the air. At the same time, mercury-containing waste due to the reduction of the country's mineral resources is an additional source of mercury. Therefore, it is necessary to recycle mercury-containing waste. INTRODUCTION Paperobjective: demercurization of technogenic raw materials (amalgamation tails, discharge outlets of tailing dumps) to be recycled. Under natural conditions, the mercury usually migrates in the form of three most common compounds: elementary mercury (Hg); mercuric mercury ion (Hg+2); methylmercuryion (Hg (CH3) +. Chemical compounds Hg (II) are found in natural conditions much more often than Hg (I).The authors propose to conduct demercurization of technogenic raw materials (mercurial tailings) in two stages. At the first stage, the mercury in the form of small balls, the finest particles (drip mercury) can be extracted by applying the gravitational method. We propose a method for centrifugal processing of crushed waste in the apparatus of Itomak company, Novosibirsk, as the basis of the technological process for mercury recycling. The extraction of metallic mercury out of mercury-containing waste into commercial products, according to the technological characteristics of the Itomak apparatus, reaches 86.0% (2, 3). At the second stage, the extraction of mercury out of technogenic raw materials is performed applying a sorption method and using carbon sorbents based on fossil coals. Hard coal of the Kuznetsk Basin has been already used for industrial production of active carbons (carbon sorbents) of the KAD-iodine type, which is one of the prerequisites that determine the choice to use it for the aims of this study."

A computerized moving average technique was developed to interpolate coal seam characteristics between sample points. The interpolative method coupled with multivariate regression analysis and simulation procedures was used to forecast coal properties not readily obtained from an analysis of drill core samples. Coal property forecasts were of two kinds: (1) specific mine property forecasts that are suitable for mine product control and yield a good approximation of the local variation along both the vertical and horizontal axes of the seam, and (2) regional estimates where much of the local seam variation is smoothed out, but the general trends are maintained. Forecasts of the volatile matter, ash, total sulfur, and the heating value for part of the Pittsburgh seam located in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia were in good agreement with independent evaluation data. Spatial configuration for preparation characteristics, particularly, the effect of crushing on sulfur release, low-and high-temperature carbonization properties, the Hardgrove grindability index, the coal hardness index, gasification variables, and hydrogenation factors were constructed for the same area of the Pittsburgh seam. These forecasts may be developed from drill core data collected in the exploration phase of mining. The results, which may take the form of a series of maps, are useful to mining, chemical, and combustion engineers, to economists and mine managers, as well as to coal users for mine design, economic analyses, energy forecasts, utilization studies, mine product control, and environmental control and programming.

US coal production increased 3% to a record 832 Mt (917 million st) in 1987, according to preliminary Energy Information Administration (EIA) data. Most of the increase was due to the unusually warm summer and the increased coal-fired electricity demand for air conditioning. Drought conditions in the Northwest lowered hydroelectric generation, contributing to the higher use of coal by electric utilities. However, excess production capacity and increased competition from natural gas added further downward pressure on delivered coal prices, continuing the declining price trend of the last several years. Coal production by region Appalachian coal production reached 402 Mt (443 million st) in 1987. This is about 3% more than in 1986 and just short of its 1984 peak. Virginia produced 7% more than its 1986 level, due to increased coal-based electricity demand. Smaller percentage increases were attained in eastern Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Ohio and Alabama were the only major coal-producing states in Appalachia that produced less coal in 1987 than in the previous year. In the Interior region, 1987 coal production reached a record 182 Mt (201 million st), about 2% above 1986. Illinois is the largest coal-producing state in that region. Production there fell about 3.7%, primarily because of lowered demand at electric utility plants in Alabama and Tennessee. However, this was more than offset by production increases in western Kentucky, Texas, and Indiana. After falling slightly in 1986, coal production in the West resumed its upward trend to a record 248 Mt (273 million st). Wyoming is that region's dominant coal producer. It mined 7% more coal than in 1986. Wyoming's increase offset the 11% decline in New Mexico production and smaller declines in other Western states. Coal consumption and prices Domestic coal consumption reached a record 759 Mt (837 million st) in 1987. Most of the increase resulted from the unusually warm summer that led to higher than normal peak demands for electricity in the third quarter. Electric utility coal consumption was also boosted by the below-normal hydroelectric generation that resulted from low water levels in the Northwest. These factors more than offset the effects of increased nuclear power generation and competition from natural gas. As a result, coal provided 56.9% of electric utility generation in 1987, compared with 55.7% in 1986. Electric utilities consumed a record 651 Mt (718 million st) of coal. While electric utility coal consumption increased, the average cost of coal to utilities was down, from $1.58 per million Btu in 1986 to $1.52 in 1987. The average price of coal delivered to utilities in 1987 was $35.09/t ($31.84 per st), the lowest since 1981. Coal prices were held down by a glut of coal supplies and by a decline in the average price of natural gas to electric utilities. Coal consumption at coke plants in 1987 was 2.6% above the 1986's 32.5 Mt (36 million st). This increase reflects steel's recent resurgence. Coking coal demand, though, was reduced by the increased use of continuous casting and electric furnace technologies. The average price of coal delivered to coke plants fell from $56.02 to $51.35/t ($50.83 to $46.59 per st). Coal consumption in the industries other than coke plants amounted to 68.2 Mt (75.2 million st) in 1987, slightly less than in 1986. Coal lost part of its market share to natural gas, which was priced favorably relative to coal. The average price of coal delivered to manufacturing plants was at its lowest level of the current decade. It fell from $39.50/t in 1986 to $37.27/t ($35.84 to $33.81 per st). Residential and commercial coal consumption fell to 6.2 Mt (6.9 million st) that is 9.8% below 1986 and the lowest since 1980. This decline is also attributed to the relatively low price of natural gas in 1987. Coal stocks Coal consumers held 169 Mt (186 million st) of coal stocks at the end of 1987, 5.9% above the 1986 year-end level. Most of this increase was due to stockpiling by electric utilities in anticipation of a possible strike by the United Mine Workers of America early in 1988. Stocks at electric utilities increased to an estimated 154 Mt (171 million st) at the end of 1987, 5.6% higher than the previous year. This was much lower than 1984's stock buildup. Coke plants increased their coal stocks by 30% in 1987 to 3.5 Mt (3.9 million st), rebounding from the unusually low inventories of 1985 and 1986. According to the previous research, it is found that the thickness of cover is mostly less than 100 m for highwall mining system. However, for most of the Chinese surface coal mines, the mining depth is over 150 m; on the other hand, the shovel-truck is the most common mining technology. As a result, a lot of residual coal will be remained around end-walls. Considering these facts, the calculated methodology of highwall mining system under thick cover is presented in this paper. Meanwhile, numerical simulation of highwall mining system under thick cover was carried out. The outcome shows that the calculated methodology for pillar stability of highwall mining system under thick cover presented in this paper is acceptable. In other words, the highwall mining system is feasible to extract the residual coal around end-walls in Chinese surface coal mines. Thus, not only coal recovery ratio can be improved, but also can increase the production life of surface coal mines in China.

Many controversies and differences of opinion exist in blasting technology. The primer location in small diameter dynamite columns is an example of one of these controversial areas. It is generally agreed that in rotation firing of small diameter blastholes, primer placement near the bottom of the borehole is beneficial since it reduces the likelihood of cutoffs. The controversy results in the actual location of the primer in the bottom of the blasthole. Some references indicate that the primer cartridge should be the first cartridge in the bottom of the hole, with the cap pointed toward the collar of the hole. Others indicate that performance is improved with no sacrifice in safety by placing a tamped cartridge first in the hole, and the second cartridge being the primer. The following investigation provides some factual data for consideration.

A argila é uma matéria prima com diversas finalidades na indústria. Entre as principais características desse material, destaca-se por ser terrosa, de granulometria fina, e suscetível à moldagem em função da consistência plástica que adquire em presença de certa quantidade de água. No caso do revestimento cerâmico, estes podem ser classificados de acordo com características do processo, propriedades tecnológicas e aplicações. A cor de queima do suporte é um fator de grande importância tecnológica e classifica os revestimentos em produtos de cor vermelha e produtos de cor branca. Contudo, este trabalho tem como objetivo o estudo das propriedades tecnológicas de uma argila de coloração branca, oriunda da cidade de Vera Cruz/RN que é localizada na microrregião do agreste potiguar, a fim de analisar suas propriedades tecnológicas e indicar sua viabilidade econômica. Para tanto, os corpos de prova foram confeccionados por pressão uniaxial, usando uma prensa hidráulica com uma pressão de 21 MPa. As amostras foram sinterizadas em um forno tipo mufla nas temperaturas de 900°C, 1000°C e 1100°C, com taxa de aquecimento de 10 °C/min e isoterma de 60 minutos. As propriedades tecnológicas das amostras foram analisas usando os ensaios de retração linear (RL%), massa específica aparente (MEA), absorção de água (AA%), perda ao fogo (PF%) e porosidade aparente (PA%). A composição química da argila foi analisada através da fluorescência de raios-X (FRX). Ao final do processo observou-se que a argila pode ser usada para compor massas cerâmicas, especialmente pela sua coloração clara, todavia os valores dos ensaios de AA% e PA% foram elevados o que demostra que o material necessita de outros componentes mineralógicos para ser usado industrial, especialmente na indústria de revestimentos.

Mine production systems (MPS) are characterized, more or less, by the following properties: uncertainty, subjectivity, impreciseness, polysemy, instability, indefiniteness and lack of data. From modern study aspect these MPS mathematically belong to the class of fuzzy systems. With this in mind, the usage of fuzzy sets is recommended as a methodology that treats impreciseness, indefiniteness and complexity of mine production systems in a satisfactory manner. Fuzzy modelling, discussed in this pa- per, is applied as a mathematical implement. The objective of the paper was to show production optimization in practice on the ex- ample of bauxite open pits where fuzzy linear programming (FLP) was used following the criterion per income. The variables in criterion function are linguistic variables while both variables and variable restrictions are presented by triangular fuzzy numbers (TFN). The term "satisfactory income" presented through triangle fuzzy numbers was introduced instead of "maximizing the income". sensitivity of the obtained solutions has been analysed

The effects of changes in sintering bed height, coke fuel, suction and basicity on sinter productivity, physical strength and mineralogy were determined. It was found that, for a given iron ore, there is a narrow -coke range which maximises sinter strength, irrespective of bed height (in the range 300 to 500 mm) or basicity (in the range 1.2 to 2.2). Increases in bed height, at a constant coke level, improved the physical strength of the sinter. Productivity increases were obtained by increasing the sintering suction but, at coke levels other than the optimum, these *ere somewhat offset by the decrease in sinter physical strength. At basicities higher than 1.2 (i.e. 1.6, 1.8 and 2.2) there was a narrowing of'the size range of product sinter, with a decrease in the percentage of top size material, and a decrease in the amount of fines produced. Changes in coke, bed height and basicity exert major effects on sinter mineralogy, while the Nagoya index was mainly influenced by cote and bed height Changes.

The ores treated at the concentrating plant of the Mahoning Mining Co. at Rosiclare, III., come largely from the blanket replacement deposits of the northeastern part of Hardin County, Illinois, and consist of complex mixtures of galena, sphalerite and fluorspar in a gangue of quartz, limestone and sandstone. The several minerals are so intimately inter-grown that they are not liberated at the sizes usually treated by gravity concentration in the usual fluorspar plant. For this reason, an all-flotation method of concentration was developed in cooperation with the station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Rolla, Mo.1 This flotation separation made possible the commercial production of four concentrates: (I) lead, (2) zinc, (3) acid-grade fluorspar and (4) metallurgical-grade fluorspar.2,3 Although fluorspar had been floated in Canada in 1921 and a plant at Rosiclare had been floating fluorspar since March 1929, fluorspar flotation was given considerable impetus by the Mahoning developments, since some features of the separation were quickly adopted by other fluorspar companies. The Bureau of Mines6 reports that in the 10 years preceding 1938 only 50,552 tons of fluorspar flotation concentrates were produced in the United States. The rise from this almost nominal figure to 153,750 tons (largely acid grade) in one year (1944)6 is indicative of the activity in fluorspar flotation occasioned by the war. The industry thus proved to be in a position to expand and keep up reasonably well with the requirements imposed upon it by such developments as occurred in high octane aviation gasoline alkylation, in the use of Freon as a refrigerant and as carrier in the Aerosol "bug bomb," and in the atomic bomb project as well as in the expansion of other activities requiring hydrofluoric acid; for example, the aluminum industry. Despite the fact that the greater portion of acid-grade fluorspar produced in the last few years went directly into war uses, the future of the acid-grade field still appears bright. As a result of the activity in fluorine chemistry during the war, it seems likely that in the relatively near future almost every phase of human endeavor will find some fluorine compound involved. The other three concentrates produced deserve some attention in these introductory remarks. The lead concentrates first produced contained both zinc and fluorspar but these did not interfere with their marketing. As will be pointed out later, the quality has steadily improved until today it is a relatively high-grade product. Although some zinc smelters accept concentrates containing limited quantities of fluorspar, it is a very objectionable impurity. The several minerals are so intimately inter-grown that they are not liberated at the sizes usually treated by gravity concentration in the usual fluorspar plant. For this reason, an all-flotation method of concentration was developed in cooperation with the station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Rolla, Mo.1 This flotation separation made possible the commercial production of four concentrates: (I) lead, (2) zinc, (3) acid-grade fluorspar and (4) metallurgical-grade fluorspar.2,3 Although fluorspar had been floated in Canada in 1921 and a plant at Rosiclare had been floating fluorspar since March 1929, fluorspar flotation was given considerable impetus by the Mahoning developments, since some features of the separation were quickly adopted by other fluorspar companies. The Bureau of Mines6 reports that in the 10 years preceding 1938 only 50,552 tons of fluorspar flotation concentrates were produced in the United States. The rise from this almost nominal figure to 153,750 tons (largely acid grade) in one year (1944)6 is indicative of the activity in fluorspar flotation occasioned by the war. The industry thus proved to be in a position to expand and keep up reasonably well with the requirements imposed upon it by such developments as occurred in high octane aviation gasoline alkylation, in the use of Freon as a refrigerant and as carrier in the Aerosol "bug bomb," and in the atomic bomb project as well as in the expansion of other activities requiring hydrofluoric acid; for example, the aluminum industry. Despite the fact that the greater portion of acid-grade fluorspar produced in the last few years went directly into war uses, the future of the acid-grade field still appears bright. As a result of the activity in fluorine chemistry during the war, it seems likely that in the relatively near future almost every phase of human endeavor will find some fluorine compound involved. The other three concentrates produced deserve some attention in these introductory remarks. The lead concentrates first produced contained both zinc and fluorspar but these did not interfere with their marketing. As will be pointed out later, the quality has steadily improved until today it is a relatively high-grade product. Although some zinc smelters accept concentrates containing limited quantities of fluorspar, it is a very objectionable impurity.
