In this paper some failure phenomena observed in the crossing of brittle rock formations at the Lötschberg base tunnel are presented. A brittle failure criteria, recently developed by Canadian researchers, is applied through finite element calculations together with a semi-empirical failure criterion, to explain these behaviours. Good agreement is found between predicted and observed failures at the tunnel walls. This study also shows some of the limitations of this approach. Dans cet article sont présentés certains phénomènes de rupture observés durant la traversée de zones de roches fragiles lors de l’excavation du tunnel du Lötschberg. Un critère de rupture développé récemment par la recherche canadienne est utilisé à travers des calculs par éléments finis. En parallèle, les résultats sont comparés avec ceux d’un critère semi-empirique. Au niveau des parements, l’ampleur des ruptures observées est assez proche des résultats de calcul. Cette étude a également permis de mettre en avant certaines limites de l’approche choisie. In diesem Artikel werden verschiedene Brucharten dargestellt, die bei der Durchfahrung von sprödem Gestein im Rahmen des Ausbaus des Lötschberg-Basistunnels beobachtet wurden. Zur Erklärung des vorliegenden Verhaltens wurden die erst kürzlich in Kanada entwickelten Theorien zur Beschreibung von Sprödbrüchen herangezogen und bei der Berechnung mittels der Finite-Elemente-Methode und eines semi-empirischen Kriteriums angewendet. Die so vorhergesagten Versagenszonen an den Tunnelwänden stimmen mit den Beobachtungen gut überein. Die Studie hat auch dazu beigetragen, die bei der Anwendung des Lösungsansatzes angetroffenen Schwierigkeiten aufzuzeigen.

Conveyors are the lifeline of mining and processing operations. They continuously supply materials to and carry finished products and waste away from operations. When conveyors are running at less than maximum efficiency, the operation's productivity is in trouble. Inefficient conveyors suffer carryback, leading to the buildup of materials on idlers and other expensive components. They spill and leak material at loading zones and conveyor transfer points. This causes accumulations that can damage the belt, wear moving components and increase both clean-up labor and maintenance expenses. They wander or mistrack, spilling material and endangering personnel and conveyor components. And through these inefficiencies, they multiply the operation's hidden costs. These added expenses occur in lost production, increased downtime for service and maintenance and replacement costs for prematurely worn equip¬ment. In addition, the attitude that inefficiency is "good enough" is recognized elsewhere in the organization. As a result, other departments relax or operate at less than peak performance. Quality goes down along with employee morale. Costs of inefficient conveyors A key to efficiency is handling a product as few times as is necessary. That means conveyors should be loaded, track true to the unloading point and then be unloaded, all without material escape or waste motion. An inefficient conveyor is often signaled by accumulations of DURT - material that has escaped from the system and is now at large in the plant. This DURT adds costs to an operation that are uncounted and, perhaps, uncountable.

"As part of a major reconstruction and expansion of the Majdanpek Copper Mine, an investigation and optimization of the flotation collector regime was undertaken. The flotation response of the major minerals to various reagents and the effect of pulp chemistry was studied from both a fundamental and practical point of view. These studies led to plant trials and the eventual adoption of a modified collector suite which improved both copper and gold recoveries.INTRODUCTIONThe Majdanpek Copper Mine processes 40,000 tons per day of ore containing about 0.43% cu. In addition to copper, the ore also contains recoverable quantities of molybdenite and gold. The mine has been in operation since 1961 and is the largest in Yugoslavia. It is currently undergoing major reconstruction and expansion. The flowsheet of the Majdanpek concentrator is shown on Figure 1.The ore body is variable in composition and changes in mill feed require proper control of operating variables to achieve the optimum metallurgical results. A detailed study including grindability, flotation response, and solid-liquid separation was carried out on several samples of the ore. Flotation response and the choice of reagent chemistry were found to be very important in achieving the highest recoveries of metal values. An automatic reagent control scheme insured that optimum dosages were used in the plant.The flotation collectors used at the present time include sodium isopropyl xanthate (SIPX), AERO 3302 Promoter and AERO 5415 Promoter. The addition of AERO 5415 to the reagent suite is a recent development and was based on the favorable results obtained in the extensive laboratory testing program conducted to establish the optimum reagent combination and dosages. Subsequent plant tests confirmed that AERO 5415 provided significant improvements in copper and gold recoveries. A description of the mineralogy of the Majdanpek ore and details of laboratory and plant metallurgical data are given in this paper. The chemistry of AERO 5415 Promoter and its interaction with minerals relevant to Majdanpek ore are also discussed."

Recent work on beneficiation of the .Alabama red iron ores and ferruginous sandstones has brought out interesting new facts on particle-size reduction that axe a valuable supplement to what is already known.4/ The work was done by the Southern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with-the University of Alabama, University, Ala., on two samples from the Birmingham district. One was an oolitic red iron ore containing about 35 percent iron; the other was a ferruginous sandstone containing about 25 percent iron, particularly attractive because of its low phosphorus content. In both samples rounded quartz (sand) grains were embedded in an oolitic, "onion skin" matrix of hematite. The hematite carries varying amounts of clay, which limits the grade of concentrate that can be made. The clayey hematite is soft, so that the rock crumbles readily under pressure. The sand grains shell out like corn,, and without much exaggeration the mill used for differential grinding might be called a "sheller,"

China’s land area, comparable in size to United States or Canada, contains diverse geological environments and mineral resource potential. The diversity in geological environments is such that the potential for developing many world-class mineral deposits in China is good. However, China’s mining sector was not open to foreign investment until the1990s. The long-term prospect for Chinese resource development is attractive because of China’s enormous population and cumulative demand for minerals. Approximately 33 foreign mineral companies, including 11 major internationals, are to various degrees active in China. Chinese mining laws and regulations pertaining to joint ventures with foreign companies are, from the international investment prospective, evolving slowly, but positively. This positive trend is continuing under the current government reform process, which is moving China towards a freer market economy. Although improving the enforcement of relevant laws and regulations is an ongoing process, the environment for mineral investment and joint ventures is increasingly more accommodating to foreign companies.

Availability of cement in the industrialized and developing countries of East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Australasia for the 1975 - 1980 period are discussed in this report. Quantitative data includes production, imports, exports, and apparent consumption. An account of new cement plants and plant extensions is provided. Countries and areas covered include: East Asia---Japan, South Korea, North Korea, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Philippines; South east Asia---Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia; Oceania (Australasia)---Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Fiji.

Two versions of the Ti-Mn binary diagram have been published recently.' , -0th diagrams show two compounds in the region between 40 and 70 wt pct Mn, but disagree as to the reaction in which these compounds are involved. The investigation of the manganese-rich portion of the Ti-Mn binary diagram was undertaken at New York University as part of an investigation of ternary systems with titanium and manganese in order to determine which of the proposed diagrams is correct. A number of alloys between 31 and 70 pct Mn were prepared in a manner similar to that described by Cadoff and Nielsen; except that low currents (110 amp in argon atmosphere) and long melting times (up to 20 min) were used to prepare the alloys. Compositions were determined from weight-loss data, assuming all loss as due to manganese. Heat treatments were carried out with relatively large pieces, since there was a tendency for manganese to be lost during heat treatment. When X-ray diffraction data was to be obtained, the central parts of heat-treated specimens were used to make filings or powders which were not heat treated. Specimens were heat treated from the as-cast state. Heat-treatment times were as follows: 1150°C, 1 day; ll00°C, 2 days; 1000°C, 5 days; and 900°C, 15 days. It should be noted that equilibrium was not attained at 900°, 1000°, and in one case, at 1150°C. Metallographic specimens were electrolytically polished and strain etched by a technique described elsewhere.' At least four, and possibly six, phases were found in the region investigated. On the basis of information available at this time, a completely self-consistent diagram cannot be constructed, and therefore data are presented only for those phases which have been identified by both X-ray and microstruc-ture. Of the compounds detected, the one highest in manganese is the Laves phase, TiMn,, which is hexagonal with a MgZn, type of structure.V he diffraction data for TiMn2 from a 70 pct Mn alloy annealed at 1150°C are shown in Table I. The c/a ratio and parameters of TiMn2 agree well with those of Wall-baum hnd Rostoker et al. The values obtained here are c/a = 1.641, a = 4.825A. Another compound is the y-phase which is estimated to contain about 60 pct Mn. The y-phase has a structure which is identical to that of TiMn, with c/a = 1.639, a = 4.906Å. The fact that y has a Laves-type lattice would suggest that TiMn, has a range of solubility which extends from the composition of TiMn2 (69.6 Mn) to that of y (60 pct Mn). However, this could not account for microstructures which, in the 60 to 70 pct Mn region, show several phases in both the as-cast state and after annealing at 1150°C. Fig. 1 shows a two-phase structure of a 60 pct Mn alloy annealed at 1150°C. The phases present are y (white) and e (dark). If y were TiMn, then, according to Rostoker et al.,' the second phase of Fig. 1 should be P-Ti. The diffraction data for the 60 pct Mn alloy of Fig. 1 are shown in Table I. The starred d-values are from the e-phase and these lines do not correspond to those of &Ti. This paper is one of a series being prepared for the United States Bureau of Mines to disseminate technical information retarding the methods used in mining nonmetallic minerals. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. This paper deals particularly with methods and costs of dredging, classifying materials, and transportation at the plant of the Ross Island Sand & Gravel Co. of Portland, Ore. THE aim of this paper is to point out the various ways in which design is taught in standard four-year mining engineering curricula in American colleges and universities; to discuss the reasons apparently justifying the great diversity of procedure that exists along this line; and to indicate possible solutions to the difficulties now attending the teaching of design. A study was made of typical four-year mining engineering curricula in 15 colleges and universities of the United States (Table I). Great diversity in content of the various design courses, if taught as described, became apparent immediately. It appeared that it might be both interesting and instructive if the cause for this colorful variety could be found. Was the cause local mining conditions, departmental individuality, or actual necessity? Study of the school catalogues revealed that the various design courses could be classified into two fairly distinct types; namely, (I) those dealing with mine equipment or structures, and (2) those dealing with underground layout of mine workings. It seemed reasonable to label the first type of course "mining design" and the second type "mine design." Some such distinction must have been in the minds of mining educators, for we find both names (i.e., mine design and mining design) used to designate the design courses included in the various mining curricula. Unhappily, the name and the apparent content of such courses do not, in all instances, conform to the classification made here, although in most instances such conformation does obtain (Table I). It is possible that in the exceptional case the method of teaching a design course, and consequently the content of it, may have been changed at some time without change in the name of the course. Apparently only. 3 of the 15 schools made an effort to cover both types of design in their curricula (Table I). Two other schools did not list or describe any course of study that could with certainty be taken as a design course. Of the remaining 10 schools, q gave a mining-design type of course and one gave a strictly mine-design type. Obviously, the preponderance of design courses afforded are of the mining-design type. Why? To answer this question, it is necessary to make a study of the prerequisites for the two types of design courses taught. In all schools the design courses were taught in the senior year; in eight, design was taught throughout both semesters; in two, it was taught during the first semester only; and in three it was taught during the second semester only. Consequently, excepting the last three cases noted, it is obvious that all prerequisites for a design course should be completed by the end of the junior year. PREREQUISITES What are the probable prerequisites for the different kinds of design courses as they appear to be taught? Let us take first the case of the mine-design type of course, having to do with layout of underground workings. Here it would seem that logical

Cost evaluation models constructed specifically to evaluate the economic potential of an individually motorized railcar system of ore and waste transport demonstrate that the approach may be considerably more cost effective than traditional rubber-tired haulage methods. The system design places a motorized drive unit on each railcar, as opposed to the more common configuration in which a series of un-motorized cars trail behind a single locomotive. These motorized railcars are directed to various load and dump points by a computerized dispatch system, and as such have the advantage of operating unmanned. In addition, the tractive effort of the rail-type drive system is noticeably more efficient than that of the rubber-tired mode of transport. The savings are realized primarily through comparative reductions in the requirements for labor and, to a lesser degree, energy.

A methodology of environmental performance evaluation in mining developments is proposed, as well as guidelines and procedures for obtaining information to improve their environmental performance. Environmental performance is the results of the mining activities and their relation to environmental issues. If this evaluation is carried out on an on-going basis, it is possible to anticipate or to identify the formation and development of an environmental impact in its early stages. Evidence or trends identified by environmental evaluation provide valuable information to prevent further damage. The proposed methodology is based on the significant environmental aspects of a selected monitored job site by environmental indicators which are then compared with previously defined environmental criteria and targets or goals. The methodology procedures also take into account the environmental accounting of the investments and expenditures.

One of the greatest threats of mining in hard coal mines are underground fires, which in the past often resulted in the mining disasters. Implementation of scientific principles of fire fighting into practice contributed to a significant reduction of fire hazard in coal mines. However, despite numerous achievements of science in the fight against the underground fires, they still occur creating a potential hazard for the miners and contributing to generate significant costs of fire-fighting operations, the temporary suspension of production or loss of longwalls. This concerns both spontaneous fires and exogenous ones. A significant decrease in the number of spontaneous fires was the result of cooperation between Polish scientists with experts in the field of new methods of fire hazard prediction and selection of new fire prevention and fire hazard monitoring methods. A significant part played here researchers from the Central Mining Institute. The original method of endogenous fire risk assessment based on calorimetric tests of coal and developed mathematical model of the process of coal self-heating allow to predict the risk of spontaneous fires and select proper fire prevention measures adequate to the involved risk. The frequency of exogenous fires is in the last few years is low, but their share in the total number of fires is relatively high and constitutes about 30%. This results from the prevention activities, carried out regularly in mines which are aimed at reducing the fire hazard connected with the use of fire-resistant conveyor belts and other non-metallic materials. Further directions to reduce the hazards connected with underground fires should focus on improving the methods for monitoring hazards together with automation of fire fighting operations.

The “Functional Performance Equation for Ball Milling” was first presented in 1988. It now has been used successfully in more than a dozen mineral processing plants. This powerful, yet simple tool provides a new level of understanding of closed circuit grinding. It shows how grinding circuit efficiency is in reality comprised of two distinct efficiencies. It demonstrates how circuit production rate is related, collectively, to these two efficiencies, mill energy input, and the grindability of the ore. It links circuit performance to design and operating variables that can be manipulated, and creates an effective strategy for making plant improvements. This paper covers the derivation and industrial validation of this equation. As part of an engineering and management system that also incorporates suitable metrics and process control, other operators can now use this tool to make improvements and to manage the performance of their grinding operations with clarity and confidence.

After the Loma Prieta Earthquake, which caused major damage to viaducts in the Bay Area, the California Department of Transportation set up a test programme for foundation piles. Funderingstechnieken Verstraeten B.V., beter known as Fundex, was approached, since one of the piling systems of Fundex, named Tubex, is extremely suitable in areas sensitive to earthquakes and we were very much interested to prove the capabilities of this piling system. Equipment For the installation of Tubex and Tubex grout-injection piles special piling equipment is required. Since our company is not only a contractor, but also a designer and manufacturer of piling equipment, all special equipment for our range of foundation techniques is designed and built by our own piling equipment department. For the installation of both Tubex piles and Tubex grout-injection piles for the Caltrans test programme, the following pieces of equipment were selected: a) Fundex F12 piling rig b) Drill table c) Hydraulic powerpack d) Grout mixing unit and high pressure pump

Purification of copper electrolyte at Naoshima is carried out by two stage liberation to completely depress copper and impurity ions followed by concentration of the solution to produce crude nikel sulfate as by-product. A new nickel recovering process has been developed and pilot tested recently. It consists of the following process steps.; neutralization of spent electrolyte from liberation section to remove free acid and most part of remaining impurity ions, refining and nickel concentration by solvent extraction, and crystallization of pure nickel sulfate from concentrated strip solution. This paper describes the results of laboratory and pilot plant tests, then briefly discusses feasibility of the proposed process.

The deadline for meeting legal requirements relating to the sale of explosives in the European Union was 1 January 2003. The paper examines the range of materials that have already been certified by the different Explosives Notified Bodies as well as recent national and European Commission decisions relating to this work. The implications of enlargement of the European Union are also discussed as is the future role of the Great Britain Explosives Notified Body in certification and assessment.

The Industrial Minerals div. has been forging ahead in formulating a program for the February Annual Meeting in Los Angeles. Several papers have been listed and more are being worked into the program. For the cement, lime and gypsum part of the sessions, papers on Gypsum in the Aircraft Industry, Geology of San Marcos Island Gypsum Deposit, and Status of New Dry Rotary Blast Hole Drills, are expected. The Chemical Raw Materials sessions will feature a symposium on potash, with 13 papers as the anticipated number to be presented. Airborne and Ground Magnetometer Work has been suggested. Eight papers have been set for Mining Geology, Four papers, Mining Phosphate Rock, Idaho Phosphorous, and Geology of Carlsbad Potash and Geology of Pearlite will be on the program. Sessions on Dimension stone and slate have been tentatively worked out with papers on Geologic Factors Affecting the Dimension Stone Industry of California, A Quarter Century of Granite Quarrying in Massachusetts, Rock Bursting and Other Geologic Problems in the Granite Quarries of Barre, Vt., Quarry Practices in the Indiana Building Stone Industry, Stratigraphy and Composition of the Salem Limestone, and Dimension Stone in the U. S. in 1952. The Rare Minerals Committee is aiming for six papers with two papers now definitely on the program.

El presente trabajo describe las experiencias adquiridas en perforación y voladura en la mina Calera, perteneciente a la Compañía de Minas Orcopampa, a fin de a evaluar sus operaciones de minado. La perforación se realiza a través del uso de dos brazos de los equipos Jumbo Tamroc Minimatic y Upper Drills, constituyendo una perforación mixta de taladros horizontales y verticales respectivamente. Asimismo, cada equipo tiene sus áreas de operaciones de acuerdo a las condiciones geoestructurales del terreno, mejorando la supervisión y control de la red de perforación, así como de los equipos.
