A DESCRIPTION of the block-caving system of mining as practised at the King mine of Asbestos Corporation, Limited, Thetford Mines, Que., was presented. at the Annual Meeting of the Institute held in Quebec city, in April, 1934. The paper was published in the Transactions of the Institute for 1934. There has now been recovered, by this method, one million tons of ore, and a review of experience indicates that the method was well planned and has been executed smoothly. In approaching the problem of selecting the type of mining best adapted to this deposit, the method had to be one which would be low in cost, use no wood, and not disturb the surface immediately bounding the ore-body on two sides. Prior to 1931, block-caving had been considered but rejected, as it en-tailed disturbance of the surface area which lay within a 45° angle of the lowest contemplated workings, if the practice of such mines as Ray, Miami, Inspiration, and Morency, where this type of mining has been used extensively, was followed. At these properties there have been mined large tannages at outstanding low costs, but an extensive surface area has been disturbed in each case. In some instances, townsites in the mining area have had to be abandoned, and dwellings, not considered worth moving, have been allowed to fall into the depression. A study was made of the principles involved in the various types of block-caving, the existing information on ground movement, subsidence, etc., also being carefully analysed. Toward the end of 1931, a plan was conceived whereby the country adjoining ground being caved might be held permanently in place and undisturbed. The success of such a scheme was essential to the application of block-caving at the King mine on account of property boundaries, the Quebec Central Railway right-of-way, and expense of moving buildings. Study of existing data on caving and movement of rock, caused by sub-surface excavations of sufficient unsupported area to result in failure of the backs, indicated, in practically every instance, that such movements followed certain definite laws of mechanics.

High-Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) are employed in cement plants worldwide. Although the technology has been mastered in the majority of applications, design-, scale-up- and operationalchallenges still exist today. In addition to modelling throughput, energy requirement and comminution success, the prediction and avoidance of malfunctions is of great importance in current research. The performance of the mill is highly influenced by the roll speed and the fineness of the feed material. Another parameter influencing the composition of mill feed is the circulating load, which is determined by the grinding circuit configuration, the target fineness and the separation efficiency of the classifier. In order to meet this circumstance and simultaneously maintain a reasonable level of material input and testing effort, a complete grinding circuit on a small technical scale was set up in the research centre of Thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions AG. The present study varied the roll speed (0.5-2 m/s) and the proportion of fines in the feed (0-75 %) in order to investigate the influence of both parameters on the finish grinding of a Portland cement with a target fineness of 4000 cm²/g according to Blain. In 1989, an autogenous grinding task force was formed to study potential autogenous grinding circuits to replace the existing semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) at the National Steel Pellet Plant in Keewatin, MN. Pilot plant test work, performed by the Hanna Research Center (HRC), indicated that fully autogenous grinding with pebble extraction and crushing could be incorporated into the existing circuits. In 1990, one of the existing 10 grinding mills was converted for an in-plant test incorporating pebble crushing. Full-scale test work were conducted in 1990 and 1991. They verified the pilot plant projections with primary mill throughputs from the fully autogenous circuit using pebble crushing being greater than throughput of the existing SAG mill circuits. The plant produces 5 Mt/a (4.9 million ltpy) of iron ore pellets from 17.6 Mt (17.3 million It) of crude taconite. Crude ore is single-stage crushed by gyratory crushers. Primary grinding is performed by 10 semi-autogenous wet grinding mills. Secondary grinding is performed by five ball mills. Induration is with an Allis Chalmers grate-kiln pelletizing system. The primary grinding circuit consists of 108.2-m-diam x 5.5-m long (27 ft-diam x 18-ft) SAG mills. The mills are charged with 127 mm-diam (5 in.diam) steel grinding balls at from 3% to 5% by volume. Ball consumption rate is about 0.55 kg/t (1.25 lbs/lt) of crude ore feed to the mill. Each SAG mill is powered by two 2.6 MW (3500 hp) motors drawing 5450 kW (7300 hp) at 76% of critical speed. The mills are grate discharge with 16 mm (0.6 in.) slotted grate openings when new. The mill discharge is sized on a trommel screen having 4.5 mm (0.2 in.) openings. The plus 4.5 mm (+0.2 in.) oversize material is returned to the discharge end of the mill by a reverse screw auger located in the center of the trommel. The -4.5 mm (-0.2 in.) trommel screen undersize is pumped to magnetic cobbers.

This Peirce-Smith Converting Centennial symposium is celebrating the contributions of two men, William Peirce and E.A.C. Smith, in advancing technology allowing the copper industry to realize its full potential. However, theirs is representative of a larger story: New, simpler technology releasing the stranglehold of older, more complicated technology, new developments in vessel configuration and design finding alternate routes around dead ends in operability, advances in technique and concepts removing roadblocks of cycle time and capacity, and overall innovation opening up vast new reserves around the world to those companies willing to embrace those improvements. Our story is also one of personalities, stubborn smeltermen versus the innovators, those inside the industry versus those from outside. It is a story of an initial borrowing from the steel industry, but also Peirce and Smith, from the refining end of the copper business, taking the ideas of Baggaley from Pittsburgh’s steel and airbrake industry, who built on what Hollway, Manhès and David, Douglas, and others had done in smelter tests, further to compete with the previous primacy and closely held expertise of the copper smeltermen in Wales. These advances have been well recorded in photographs taken over the last 150 years. A number were submitted especially for this symposium. Many others were published in the mining and metallurgy press of the times. Several mining schools also retained copies of photos either taken during field trips, or donated to the school by alumni and operating companies. This presentation will provide a selection and discussion from these sources of “converters in action”, describing the various designs, operations and developments depicted. The focus here will be on the first roughly 60 years of copper converter development, from Bessemer’s days at the dawn of this new idea, up to and slightly past the time of initial adoption of Peirce and Smith’s designs.

The United Verde mine is in the north central part of Arizona, on the northeasterly slope of the Black Hills, near the town of Jerome. Ore was first discovered in the district about 1875, and the first mining claims were located by M. A. Ruff-ner and associates in 1877. In 1888 the late Scnator William A. Clark secured control of the property and under his ownership it developed into one of the country's most important copper producers. The property was sold to the Phelps Dodge Corporation in 1935, and since then has been under this Corporation's management. Except for shutdowns caused by general world-market conditions, production has been continuous from 1890 to date. Geology The mineralized zone ranges in area from approximately 12 acres to less than 5 acres. All mineralization occurs in the pre--Cam-brian intrusives. The first intrusion, according to geologic records, was the quartz porphyry, which later was intruded by augite diorite. Following the diorite intrusion through a series of intrusions of lesser magnitude, a pipelike mass of massive sulphide, quartz and rock was formed. The diorite forms the hanging wall of this mass, and the porphyry the footwall. Between the footwall and the sulphide a band of chlorite schist was formed, probably owing to metamorphic conditions. Commercial ore occurs along the contact of the schist and sulphide extending into the sulphide, sometimes entirely through the schist, and fingering out into the porphyry. The ore deposit was formed by replacement similar to deposits formed in limestone areas. Faulting and deformation occurred in pre-Cambrian times and again in the Tertiary period, removing approximately 2000 ft. from the top of the main United Verde ore body, forming the United Verde Extension ore body, the only other major ore body in the district. Major development work has shown that the sulphide mass extends to the 3300-it. level, and diamond drilling below this level has indicated that the mass might extend below the 3700-ft. level, but in a diminished quantity. While many copper minerals exist in the mine, the chief commercial mineral is chalcopyrite. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the selective electrowinning of Ag and Au from cyanide solutions contaminated with Cu with the goal of decreasing the amount of Cu codeposited. Decreasing Cu codeposited will reduce refinery costs. Direct current was applied to the cell in pulsed and square wave voltages at 0.070 A?h per 150 mL of solution. Times tested for each cycle ranged from 1 to 10,000 ms. Graphite, lead, and stainless steel were evaluated as electrode materials. Square wave electrowinning at 70° C gave the best separation of Ag and Au from Cu. Applying 2.5 V during the duty cycle, 0.0 V the rest of the period, a duty cycle of 10 to 30 pct, and a period of 100 to 1,000 ms gave the following results: Ag concentrations decreased from 34 to 0.1µg/mL, Au concentrations decreased from 54 to 0.2 µg/mL, and Cu concentrations remained almost constant at 560 µg/mL.

The role of copper sulphate in the flotation of pyrite has been studied. A survey of a number of pyrite flotation plants using copper sulphate showed that in correct dosages, it was able to increase both grades and recoveries. This was confirmed in batch tests. Copper sulphate had no significant effect on the rate of adsorption of PNBX onto pyrite. Copper adsorbed irreversibly onto the pyrite when the latter was slurried in a copper sulphate solution. Copper sulphate had a significant effect on the maximum froth height obtained in static three-phase froth tests. Proposals to explain these observations are made.

A primary concern in the solution of any solid waste disposal problem is the characterization of the material. In the past, available methodology for the determination of coal refuse characteristics has been severely limited by the inseparable combination of organic and inorganic matter of which the refuse is comprised. The recent development of an electronic, low temperature asher which removes the organic material without alteration of the inorganic constituents has opened new areas of coal and coal refuse research. This study deals with the development of methodology for the characterization of Pennsylvania anthracite refuse through utilization of the low temperature asher. Seven samples of anthracite refuse were examined for verification of the methodology developed and information concerning the characteristics of the refuse.

Introduction The frigid regions of Canada's high arctic islands are well-known for major oil and gas explorations. But mining leads the way in development. Cominco Ltd.'s Polaris mine is in its second full year of commercial production, and outstripping the rated production capacity foreseen by its planners. The Polaris mine is located on the shore of Little Cornwallis Island, near the settlement of Resolute Bay. The mine property is compact. It occupies about 3 km2 (0.5 sq miles) of the vast Arctic landscape. A number of mining and technological firsts were necessary to bring a mine into production at this 76° North latitude. Development constraints that had to be overcome included climate, remote location, and the limited ice-free shipping season. Construction of the entire process plant and ancillary facilities took place on a barge in the South where labor and supplies are plentiful. The plant was towed through ice-strewn waters to its permanent location at the mine site 1450 km (900 miles) from the North Pole. Freighters moved the first shipments to the South during ice break-up in late summer 1982. Most of the zinc concentrate is sold to European smelters. The remainder is tolled at a custom smelter in Europe, and the resulting metal is sold by Cominco. Lead concentrate is sold to European smelters. The mine was designed to produce 177 kt/a (195,000 stpy) of zinc concentrate and 41 kt/a (45,000 stpy) of lead concentrate. Actual production in 1983 was considerably greater, with both mill throughput and feed grades being higher than forecast. Production was 217 kt (239,300 st) of zinc concentrate and 51 kt (56,300 st) of lead concentrate. Average milling rate was 2.3 kt/d (2500 stpd), well above the designed capacity of 2.1 kt/d of (2300 stpd). Arctic Climate Extremes The climate is typical of the Arctic: very dry with short, cool summers and long, cold winters. From November through February, there is continuous darkness. Continuous daylight prevails from April to August. Precipitation is light, rivaling the Sahara desert at about 127 mm (5 in.) of rain and snow a year. An almost continual wind forms deep snow drifts against any obstacle on the ground. Temperatures range from a winter low of about -50°C (-58°F) to a relatively pleasant 15°C (59°F) during sunny days in August. Freeze-up begins in September and ice thickness increases from less than 0.3 m (1 ft) in early October to a maximum of about 2.1 m (7 ft) in May. Award of the Design/Build Agreement for construction of Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG’s) Niagara Tunnel Project was made after an intensive 8-month international procurement process. The 14.4-m diameter × 10.4-km long rock tunnel will divert 500 m3/s of water from the Niagara River to the Sir Adam Beck hydroelectric generating complex. The procurement process and Design/Build Agreement included features to address the owner’s requirements regarding risk allocation and cost and schedule certainty, while encouraging innovative ideas from the industry, both technically and commercially. The process included an international expression of interest and prequalification, followed by an invitation for design/build proposals to qualified proponents, and comprehensive proposal evaluations and negotiations with several respondent proponents. An honorarium was provided to the unsuccessful participants in the proposal stage. The resultant negotiated Design/Build Agreement includes Owner’s Mandatory Requirements, negotiated contract terms and conditions, performanceincentive bonuses and liquidated damages for schedule and water delivery performance, a multistaged Geotechnical Baseline Report, joint risk management, references to preexisting community impact agreements and measures to reduce impact on tourism. It also addresses regulatory approvals and permits, an owner controlled insurance policy that required reference to the International Tunneling Insurance Group (ITIG) Code of Practice for Risk Management as a condition of coverage, site specific safety, security and environmental plans, formal team building, a dispute review board, and escrow documentation.

OpeRations on the Texas Gulf Coast during 1936 increased materially over 1935. A number of new fields were discovered and a few of the older fields were extended, both by the discovery of deeper pay sands and by lateral expansion of the known producing horizons. Twenty-seven new fields have been discovered, of which 25 are oil fields and the others are gas fields that have every indication of becoming oil-producing areas. Amelia, Anahuac, Bay City, North Pettus, Placedo, Pickett Ridge and Tomoconnor have had major extensions. Production for 1936 amounted to 91,224,844 bbl., an increase of 21,627,033 bbl., or 31 per cent, over the 1935 production of 69,597,811 bbl. The number of producing wells at the end of 1936 was 6727, as compared with 4851 at the end of 1935. Proration has continued in force, thus decreasing the rate of depletion and the number of abandonments normally expected. New Fields A brief discussion of the new fields follows, in addition to Tables 1 and 2, which contain the general data on these fields. Aransas (McCampbell).-Buckingham and McCampbell No. 1 McCampbell was drilled to 7501 ft., then plugged back to 6560 ft. and completed in the Marginulina for a 100-bbl. flowing well on July 18. Bee County.—The Voss field, discovered by Swiger and Devonian's No. 1 Voss, and the Holzmark field, discovered by Miller and Donzis on the Holzmark farm, are both of the same type structurally and are caused by folding against a fault, one field being on one side of a fault and the other on the opposite side of the same fault. Brooks County.—-Standard Oil Company of Texas Garcia No. 1, the discovery well in the Alta Mew field, and Dick Young's Singer No. 1, the discovery well of Alta Verde, appear to indicate small fields. Garcia No. 1 was drilled to 8022 ft. and plugged back to 2485 ft., at which depth the well made 189 barrels. Roadheaders, also called Boom Miners or Boom-type Tunneling Machines have been in North America since 1968, when first introduced by Willy Kogelmann, the founder of Alpine Equipment Corp. (?Alpine?). Roadheaders were invented in Europe in the late 1940s. Machines with in-line, axial cutter heads were developed in the former Soviet Union. The British Dosco DRCL is based on the Russian PK-3 roadheader. Roadheaders with transverse ?ripper? cutter heads were invented in Hungary (1). The Austrian-made Alpine Miners of VOEST-Alpine, purchased by Sandvik AB, are based on a 1965 Hungarian license. Roadheaders are widely used in the mining and tunneling industries because they can excavate drifts, entries and tunnels with cross sections of any shape and size, can handle mixed faces, work on steep grades, and negotiate tight curves and cross-cuts. A roadheader?s only major limitation is the strength and abrasiveness of rock and minerals to be excavated. This paper covers roadheader selection criteria, improvements in reliability, attachments for flexibility (Multi-Tool Miner), and automated support systems for increased cutting time for increased shift production.

Various criteria for evaluating the performance of coal washeries are discussed critically, with particular reference to ideas developed at the First International Conference on Coal Preparation held in Paris in June 1950. Criteria that relate only to the sharpness with which a cleaning unit separates coal from impurity are compared with those that reflect loss of coal or quality of products.

The stability of strip pillar is the key to successful strip pillar mining. In analyzing the stability of the strip pillar, the width of yield zone must be determined. The determination of the width of yield zone has been an important subject for researchers. In this paper, the numerical method was used to study the relationship between the width of yield zone in strip pillar and coal recovery ratio. The results showed that as the recovery ratio increases, the width of yield zone increases exponentially. Accordingly, the formula for determining the width of yield zone was updated and the effect of changing coal recovery ratio on strip pillar deformation is presented.

HAULAGE in tunneling operations generally has been done with electric locomotives. As a rule, on short hauls the source of electricity is a storage battery mounted on the locomotive, which, of course, must be removed and recharged periodically. Where the distance from the recharging point to the tunnel face is very long, and where loads are heavy, trolley-driven locomotives are used. Diesel engines have been used in mining and tunneling operations in Europe for a number of years. The recent reports of studies in Belgium1 and by the Bureau of Mines in this country2-4 have indicated the potentialities of this form of power for haulage, mucking, bulldozing and many other underground operations. The hazards attending the use of Diesel engines in more or less closed spaces have long been known. The exhaust constituents that may create a harmful or objectionable environment are carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen and sulphur, carbon dioxide, aldehydes and smoke. Lack of precise information regarding the concentration of these gases and the ventilation requirements to reduce them to safe levels has to some extent suppressed their general acceptance in tunneling and mining work. Not until the work of the Bureau of Mines referred to above, and certain experience gained in the construction of the Delaware Aqueduct,‡ has there been available the requisite information regarding the conditions under which their use may be permitted. This paper concerns itself with the successful operation of Diesel engines underground in the construction of certain parts of the Delaware Aqueduct, and describes the conditions under which Diesel engines have been found to operate with a minimum production of noxious gases.
