Mining and mineral processing makes a vital contribution to AustraliaÆs national export income, and our society today is critically dependent on its products. Despite the importance of this industry, its operations often come under scrutiny because of its high potential impact on local environments û both social and ecological. The challenge for the minerals industry today is to make the most responsible and best possible use of the national resource base, maximising overall resource utilisation.Research efforts and industry implementation of improvements have been moving in this direction for a considerable time already, and the industry has a long history of process innovation and improvement in Australia. Examples range from the early development of gold cyanidation and mineral flotation to more recent work undertaken under the auspices of AMIRA or through the various CRCs and research organisations such as the AJ Parker CRC for Hydrometallurgy, the Cooperative Research Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment and the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre.However, the nature of research and innovation in the mining and mineral processing sector is changing, as the industry itself copes with the pressures introduced by globalisation, industry consolidation and commodity price cycles. Large firms that have historically maintained a tradition of corporate technology and a culture of innovation are moving to outsource their technological and research competencies and are adopting æfast-followerÆ mentalities. At the same time, the challenges of sustainable development that need to be addressed are many-faceted, multidisciplinary, and require a holistic approach for significant achievements to be realised. Many sustainability issues, particularly those pertaining to environmental and safety issues, are shared across large sections of the minerals industry, and are seen as æindustryÆ problems beyond the scope of a single company.In this environment, collaborative research efforts are becoming the dominant mechanisms for building on past innovations and ensuring the continued success of the mining and mineral processing industries within a framework of sustainable development.

A mineral economic analysis of South Africa's mineral-beneficiation industry, comprising both economic theory and case studies, suggests that the domestic market has proved to be a more effective vehicle for promoting the establishment of advanced beneficiation projects than the availability of domestic raw materials. Although the domestic market plays an important role in the promotion of beneficiation by providing a secure outlet for sales, its most vital role is in the development of technological and marketing know-how that may give South African beneficiated products the competitive advantage required to penetrate export markets. The real wealth of a country lies primarily in the skills of its people rather than in its natural resources, and the domestic market plays a pivotal role in the development of these skills.

During the 20th century, the increased emphasis on worker health and safety and the advent of new mining equipment and methods led to many changes in mine face ventilation practices. Efforts by government and private industry to improve and modify ventilation practices resulted in better health and safety conditions for workers. This article focuses on U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) research to examine factors that had a significant influence on mine face ventilation design during the past century. Several "milestone" events are discussed along with the impact they had on worker health and safety. Significant ventilation research efforts by government and private industry are presented. This brief ventilation history highlights innovative face ventilation designs and a consistent commitment to mining health and safety. Ventilation has always been a concern in underground coal mining. For many yeas, there was no appreciation of how ventilation could be used to remove harmful contaminants from the air or how to control airflow quantities. The first known problems with ventilation date back to the 14th century, when it was recognized that lack of air was a major impediment to the expansion of mines. The common method of solving ventilation problems at that time was to abandon the existing mine and start a new one nearby. Ventilation in the early days of coal mining was accomplished by means of a natural draft, created principally by a difference in the weights of columns of air between the intake and return openings. Later, in the 18th and 19th centuries, a furnace was introduced underground to increase the updraft in the return shaft. This allowed for a larger quantity of air in circulation. When mines went deeper and became larger, mechanical ventilation became necessary and was first accomplished by steam-driven fans. These fans became more prevalent as furnaces were prohibited in underground mines, especially after the Avondale disaster in Pennsylvania in 1869 (Roy, 1876). The Bureau of Mines conducted experiments using bench-scale apparatus to explore the effect of large changes in process variables on the yield and composition of the gases produced by passing 800° C steam through a fixed bed of Pittsburgh seam (hvab) coal. The total yield of combustible gases increased throughout the given range for the following variables: Superficial steam velocity increasing from 0.02 to 0.12 fps, pressure increasing from 1,000 to 6,000 psig, residence time increasing from 0 to 60 minutes, and temperature increasing from 800° to 900° C; however, a greater increase in the yield of hydrogen in comparison with the increase in yield of methane reduced the gross heating value of the gas to around 470 Btu per scf at conditions giving the maximum yield. Pressures of 1,000, 3,000, and 6,000 psig at 0.09 fps steam velocity, 800° C, and 60 minutes residence time, respectively, produced methane yields of 20, 24, and 22 percent, based on maf coal, with the gross heating value of the CO2-free gas decreasing from 552 to 520 and to 470 Btu per scf. Methane concentrations in the CO2-free gas were 26, 22, and 14 percent, respectively. Based on the gross heating value of the coal, the percentage of the heating value recovered in the gas was 60, 71, and 87 percent, respectively. The use of tungsten sulfide as a catalyst for converting carbon oxides and hydrogen into methane was explored briefly using both a sulfur-free gas rich in methane and a sulfur-bearing synthesis gas (3H2:1CO).

The prevention of quartz flotation by chelation of activating ions with the tetrasodium salt of EDTA in oleic acid flotation was investigated using a small vacuum flotation cell. It was found that flotation of quartz could be entirely suppressed in the presence of activating ions during complete flotation of hematite. It was further shown that the concentration of activating ions liberated from Wisconsin Gogebic taconite is sufficient to float quartz in an oleic acid system. Large tonnages of low grade siliceous iron ores occur on the iron ranges of the Lake Superior district. Although the lower grade nonmagnetic types are currently not of economic importance, they constitute a large future potential source of iron and steel, and hence have been the subject for extensive research on their beneficiation. TACONITES Of particular interest to the Dept. of Minerals and Metals Engineering at the University of Wisconsin have been the low grade nonmagnetic taconites of the Wisconsin Gogebic Range. These occur as five members of the iron formation and have been described in detail elsewhere.' Essentially they consist of an intimate mixture of hematite, goethite and quartz, with minor amounts of siderite, magnetite, iron containing silicates, and manganese minerals. A typical mean analysis based on the Bureau of Mines analyses' is: SiO2-52.50%, Fe2O3-43.40%, (Fe-30.38%), A12O3-1.15%, P2O5-0.07%, Mn2O3-0.29%, CaO-0.07%, (S-0.03%), Loss on ignition-2.00%. The quartz in these ores is of a microcrystalline variety,2 and so intimately associated with the iron oxide minerals that extremely fine grinding, in the order of minus 325 mesh, is required for liberation. During grinding and subsequent flotation, the concentration of quartz activating ions in the pulp becomes sufficiently high to activate quartz which floats along with the iron minerals in the presence of oleic acid. cook3 and co-workers concluded that oxidized iron ores released appreciable quantities of quartz-activating ions in water pulps. This is shown to be true in the present investigation. As a matter of fact, application of this phenomenon, as well as the intentional addition of activating calcium ions, is made use of in the an ionic flotation of silica from the iron oxide minerals.4,5 In view of the above, it becomes almost impossible to effect a sharp separation of quartz in the oleic acid flotation of the iron oxide minerals from these taconites, even with satisfactory liberation. This fact led to the current investigation to find a means of linking the activating ions with a chelating agent. The aim was to establish basic data for the quartz-water-oleic acid system which might not only be applicable to iron ores, but also to the flotation of other siliceous ores as well. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Vacuum Flotation Cell: The vacuum flotation used in this investigation is similar to that used by previous investigators.6,7,8 The cell consisted of a 100 ml graduated cylinder with the lip removed. Vacuum from a water aspirator was applied to the cell through a trap; suitable tubing, and a rubber stopper inserted in the top of the cell. Constant absolute pressure was maintained by means of a manometer connected to the trap with a tee. Flotation: The required amount of activating ion solution was pipetted into a beaker. This was then diluted to 99.0 ml with water having a pH below that desired for the test, or so adjusted with HC1. After addition of 1.0 ml of oleic acid solution (2.0 mg oleic acid per ml), the pH was readjusted to the desired value with NaOH, and the entire solution transferred to the cell containing 1.5 gm of quartz. After vigorously agitating the cell and its contents for 2 min, the vacuum was applied to the cell and the estimated degree of flotation observed for a 3-min period. Since its formation in Papua New Guinea and raising of A$2 million in 1980, Niugini Mining Limited (NML) has grown to a company capitalised on the Australian Stock Exchange at about A$350 million. In 1995 the company produced some 237 000 ounces of gold, 700 000 ounces of silver and nearly 5000 tonnes of copper from its operations at Red Dome, in North Queensland and San Cristobal in The Atacama Desert of Northern Chile. This production contrasts with Niugini Mining's first mining venture at Mt Victor in the Eastern Highlands of PNG which yielded 20 000 ounces of gold and 11 600 of silver between 1987 and 1989. Following the formation of an exploration joint venture in 1982 with Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Ltd, now a subsidiary of RTZ, Niugini Mining's early recognition of the gold potential of volcanic rocks at plate margins led to discovery of the Lihir deposit in July 1982. This deposit containing about 42 million ounces of gold in resources, is one of the largest undeveloped gold deposits in the world. Following raising of equity funds through the float of Lihir Gold Ltd and debt finance in 1995, construction of the mine at a cost of US$673 million is now underway with first full-scale production at approximately 600 000 ounces of gold per year expected in early- 1998.

Crocidolite deposits in the Hamersley Ranges, NW. of Western Australia, occur over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20' to 30 miles. Their stratigraphic environment and mineralogy is comparable to that of similar deposits of the Cape Belt, South Africa. It is probable that the known exposures' represent only a small portion of the total extent.Current production is wholly by Australian Blue Asbestos Pty. Ltd. at Wittenoom Gorge and has been in the order of 1,2,000 to 14,000 long t.p.a over the past six years.INTRODUCTIONThe Hamersley Ranges are located in the NW. Division of Western Australia and extend, approximately, from latitudes 21° 30' to 23°S and longitudes 117° to 1200 E. Their mean height above sea level is 2,000 ft, and they rise from 600 to 800 ft above the general level of the tableland which extends SE. from the coastal town of Roebourne.Mt. Bruce, the highest peak, is 4,024 ft above sea level. The ranges are intersected by numerous north-flowing streams, which are dry during the greater part of the year. These streams have carved deep gorges, and it is in these that the principal deposits of crocidolite outcrop.The presence of the mineral was first recorded in 1917, but the deposits remained untouched until 1937 when strong market demand for crocidolite resulted in considerable prospecting and mining activity, particularly in Yampire, Wittenoom and Dale's Gorges. It was established also that the blue asbestos belt extended from Willi Wolli Springs NW. to Millstream station, Le., over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20 to 30 miles. Com a ajuda de métodos de inspeção e estudos de mecânica da fratura é possível avaliar a severidade dos defeitos existentes, prever a falha dos componentes e tomar as devidas providências para evitar acidentes que podem levar a danos ambientais, perda de vidas e prejuízos financeiros. Com foco na redução do efeito do histórico de carregamento, avalia-se uma técnica alternativa de pré-trincamento por fadiga para a obtenção das curvas de crescimento de trinca por fadiga. Esta técnica permite a nucleação de trincas em carregamento cíclico compressivo, isentas de tensões residuais compressivas, que mascaram os resultados na determinação do limiar de propagação de trincas. Neste trabalho, foram utilizados corpos de prova do tipo C(T) para a nucleação das pré-trincas de fadiga. Foi avaliada a influência das características do carregamento, como o nível da força aplicada e a razão de carregamento no comprimento de saturação das trincas produzidas, a fim de se obter avanços no estabelecimento dessa metodologia. Com um carregamento mais intenso, o comprimento de saturação de trinca foi maior. Além disso, a diferença de comprimento entre o centro e as superfícies do corpo de prova se torna mais acentuada. O comprimento de saturação de trinca é menor que o raio da zona plástica e maior que a região máxima governada por tensões residuais trativas. Para carregamentos menos severos, a trinca cresce de maneira mais uniforme e alcança comprimentos de saturação de trinca menores. A razão de carregamento não interfere significativamente no comprimento de saturação de trinca.

The accuracy with which grade and tonnage of a mineral deposit may be calculated from diamond-drill assays is dependent upon: (1) the reliability of core and sludge samples and (2) the validity of methods used in grade and tonnage calculations. Limitations imposed by drilling and sampling preclude elaborate methods of computation. In adjusting core and sludge assays the importance assigned the core and sludge samples may be based on either the respective weights recovered or the respective volumes represented by each. Only when core and sludge recoveries arc poor do discrepancies between adjusted assays calculated by these two methods develop, in which case the "weight" method gives emphasis to the core sample and the "volume" method gives emphasis to the sludge sample. When the sludge suffers classification within the drill hole, the weight method gives more accurate results; when the sludge sample suffers no classification, the volume method gives more accurate results. Any drilling campaign offers a compromise between desired accuracy on the one hand and expediency, limited time, money. or facilities on the other. Since the determination of grade and tonnage is an approximation at best, a proper basis for their computation requires a knowledge of the limitations imposed by all phases of work upon which the calculations depend A rational basis for coordination of these phases of work requires determination of: (I) the degree of accuracy desired, as a function of the object of examination; (2) the degree of accuracy attainable, as a function of the limitations imposed in the drilling and sampling program; and (3) the validity of method to be used in calculating grade and tonnage from core and sludge assays. This paper presents results of a comparison made between two commonly used methods of adjusting core and sludge assays, the assumptions upon which these methods are based, and the interrelationship of the phases of work upon which these calculations are dependent. Object of Examination The Purpose of prospecting any mineral deposit is to secure sufficient samples from which Ore grade and tonnage may be calculated. Any mine examination, preliminary or formal, has a definite purpose, although its scope may be limited or broad. The type of examination to be conducted is dependent, therefore, 'pan the reason for instituting the investigation; its scope and thoroughness are directly related to economic considerations. It is highly desirable, therefore, that before starting a drilling campaign a complete understanding of the extent of examination and desired degree of accuracy be determined as a means of simplifying the drilling program and unifying the relative degree of

The slag produced in the Peirce Smith converters at the Ilo smelter of Southern Peru Copper Corporation has shown a wide range of magnetite content, which introduces an additional problem in the smelting units due to materials? recirculation. However, the operation data analysis and the application of thermodynamic concepts have made it possible to produce slag with magnetite content between 18 and 20%. The results have suggested that matte grade enhances magnetite formation while silica controls its precipitation, and they are also influenced by the increasing temperature of the slag. Thus, in order to obtain the required magnetite content in the slag, matte grade is gradually enriched in equilibrium with slag containing from 25 to 32% silica.

Muitos componentes de ferro fundido ficam expostos a altas temperaturas quando em serviço, podendo ocorrer a decomposição da perlita através da difusão do carbono da cementita para as lamelas de grafita, resultando em alteração microestrutural e degradação das propriedades mecânicas. A influência que a temperatura e o tempo de exposição têm sobre a microestrutura de um ferro fundido cinzento foi avaliado em amostras de quatro ferros fundidos de mesma base, com diferentes percentuais de cromo e molibdênio. Ensaios de banho de sal a uma temperatura de 500ºC foram realizados em corpos de prova com diâmetro de 10 mm. Os ensaios foram realizados com tempos de exposição a esta temperatura, após homogeneização térmica do material, de 0, 1, 2 e 4 horas. As análises metalográficas evidenciam a ocorrência da decomposição da perlita. Adicionalmente foram realizados ensaios de microdureza, a qual se mostrou sensível às alterações microestruturais geradas pela temperatura elevada. O ferro fundido com maior percentual de cromo e molibdênio apresentou melhor estabilidade da microestrutura para as condições ensaiadas.

THE bulk of natural phosphates is comprised of calcium phosphates, which are usually apatites;1 calcium aluminum phosphates such as pseudowavellite;2 and aluminum phosphates, which occur in extensive deposits, notably on Grand Connetable Island.3 Nearly all deposits of current commercial value are apatite, often with admixed material of other classes. In the trade coarsely crystalline material, mainly fluorapatite of igneous origin, moves as apatite, whereas the fine-grained material of sedimentary origin is marketed as phosphate rock. The latter classification includes the phosphate shales in western North America. Although several genetic varieties of phosphate rock are recognized,4 most known reserves are of marine origin. Calcium phosphate is concentrated from Florida land pebble and Florida hard rock deposits and from Tennessee brown rock deposits. Phosphate Rock as a Fluorine Carrier: More than two decades ago Reynolds and Jacob surveyed the fluorine content of commercial phosphate rock from various parts of the world.3,5 Later these samples were reanalyzed by a new and more reliable method of determining flourine.6,7 The revised results with interim additions of new samples, published a few years ago in a brief summary,' are shown in Figs. 1-3. Through the points representing the respective varieties of rock medial straight lines are drawn. In some instances the lines are well defined by the points; in others, where scattering renders the position of the best line uncertain, the greater weight is given points near the end of the covered range. Wherever distinct varieties are not recognized among regional deposits the custom is to identify the sample with the geographical location of the deposit.

The paper describes a case study where numerical modelling has been applied to predict potential risks associated with inflows of water in active mine workings from an overlying sandstone aquifer. The objective of the modelling was to predict the development of strata fractures and strains as the longwall panels were extracted and investigate their relationship to an sandstone aquifer. The numerical modelling study also included the investigation of the effect of mining on a fault that existed close to the start position of one of the panels. The potential effects of mining on the fault were undertaken by parametric studies adjusting properties for the fault and the relative position of extractions, which allowed the mine planner to position the panel layout accordingly.

The present communication reports the results obtained by applying different concentration methods, at laboratory level, to the black sands from Estado Bolivar, Venezuela, with the aim of obtaining an adequate ilmenitic concentrate for the subsequent chlorination process. Sizing analysis was performed and plasma emission spectroscopy method was used to determine the chemical composition. It was found that from the two hydrogravimetric methods used, the Humphrey spirals is much more effective than Wilfley tables, leading to a 85% recovery. The most convenient particle size group for these concentration methods was the one corresponding to ASTM 40-140 mesh. When magnetic concentration was applied to the concentrate, obtained as a product from Humphrey spiral, a recovery of ilmenite more than 90% was obtained in the first step. It has been shown that the ore would respond to the separation techniques employed, giving individual minerals: ilmenite, zircon and silica as concentration products.

"INTRODUCTION Freeport-McMoRan is a leading international natural resources company that operates large, long-lived, geographically diverse assets with significant proven and probable reserves of copper, gold, molybdenum, cobalt, oil and natural gas. Freeport-McMoRan is the world’s largest publicly traded copper producer and largest producer of molybdenum. The Sierrita mine is an open pit truck and shovel operation from which copper and molybdenum are produced. An important key to Sierrita’s success lies in their ability to realize their plans in the field. In certain circumstances, the mine plans are not achieved, and the operation fails to meet its targets which is an issue revealed in reconciliation reports. This technical session discusses the methodologies and procedures used at Sierrita to monitor the implementation of the mine plans, measure the performance of the operation and reduce the variance between plan and actual. Ensuring the operation stays on target is vital so mine productivity and profitability can attain its maximum potential. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Sierrita mining complex is located in Pima County, approximately 20 miles southwest of Tucson, Arizona as shown in Figure 1. The first mining claims at Sierrita date back to the late 1800s while underground mining activities started in the early 1900s. However, open pit development of Sierrita began more than 50 years ago to become the modern mining complex it is today. In 2009, Freeport-McMoRan purchased the adjacent Twin Buttes copper mine, providing significant synergies in the Sierrita minerals district. This venture included the potential for expanded mining activities, operations growth for mining copper and molybdenum, and reclamation activity. It should be noted that in addition to copper and molybdenum, the Sierrita mine produces rhenium which is a rare and highly value metal. The ore deposit contains oxide and sulfide mineralization. The oxide ore is delivered to the leach process while the sulfide ore is routed to the crusher and mill circuit 4,700 jobs on Arizona’s economy Freeport-McMoRan partners with the communities near Sierrita to provide programs that contribute to their sustainability"

"The ordinance of March 27, 1919, contains provisions relative to the exploration for, Ind the exploitations of bauxite in the Colony of Surinam in Dutch Guiana.Permission to explore is limited to: Netherlanders; inhabitants of the Netherlands; inhabitants of Surinam; companies established in Netherlands, and companies established in Surinam.Holders of concessions for the exploitation of bauxite are limited to companies established in the Netherlands, or in Surinam, and these must reside in the Colony or must be represented the constantly.A permission or concession lapses: (a) when the holder ceases to have the required qualifications; (b) on the death of the holder where the assigns fail within one year to prove the required qualifications.Any dispute concerning the required qualifications must be decided by the Judge in the manner to be regulated by colonial ordinance.The Governor may, after consultation with the Privy-Council reserve tracts of land for the exploration and exploitation of Bauxite, either for the Government directly, or for concession under special provisions. These provisions shall be fixed by virtue of the colonial ordinances.Application for permission to explore shall be made in accordance with existing laws. Synthetic fiber has been gradually replaced by natural fiber, such as lignocellulosic fiber. In comparison with synthetic fiber, natural fiber has shown economic and environmental advantages. The natural fiber presents interfacial characteristics with polymeric matrices that favor a high impact energy absorption by the composite structure. However, until now little has been evaluated about the hemp fiber incorporated in polymeric matrices. This study has the purpose of evaluate the impact resistance of this kind of epoxy matrix composite reinforced with different percentages of hemp fibers. The impact resistance has substantially increased the relative amount of hemp fiber incorporated as reinforcement in the composite. This performance was associated with the difficulty of rupture imposed by the fibers resulting from the interaction of hemp fiber / epoxy matrix that helps absorb the impact energy.

INTERMETALLIC compounds are formed in many binary metal systems. Some compounds are stable to their melting points, and others decompose at lower transition temperatures. Even those of the first class are dissociated in the liquid state, as indicated by the continuous form of their solubility curves at their melting points'. While the lattice structures of some of these compounds' have been determined, their thermodynamic properties have not been investigated. In this paper is described the determination of the free energy and heat of formation of the compound CdSb, which is of the first class mentioned above, melting congruently at 455° C. This compound shows a rhombic structure, and the lengths of the edges of the elementary cell containing four molecules are: a = 6.52,b=8.60,c=4.16Å2 There are three possible methods of determining the free energy of formation of a compound of this type. The first method, applying the third law of thermodynamics, requires the measurement of its heat capacity preferably to liquid hydrogen temperatures, and a calorimetric determination of its heat of formation. The second method involves the study of the equilibrium of the compound in some gas reaction, such as: CdSb + CO2 = CdO + CO + Sb.
