The current trend of increasing augered cast-in-place (ACIP) pile diameter, length, and load carrying capacities demonstrates improvements in installation equipment, increased acceptance, and that quality control is being successfully implemented by the parties involved in the ACIP pile construction process. Quality control is essential for ACEP piles since 24- to 36-in-dia (610-to 915-mm-dia) piles are currently being constructed to sustain design compressive loads of 800 to 900 kips (3555 to 4000 kN). This paper presents a summary of ACIP pile quality control procedures and methods beginning in the design and bid process, through ACIP pile installation, to post-construction. The results of a recent survey of contractors, engineers, equipment suppliers, and researchers routinely involved with ACIP piles in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East are included to address current trends in ACIP piles and quality control.

A biooxidation-heap pretreatment process was field tested to evaluate enhancing gold recovery from a preg-robbing sulfidic carbonaceous ore. Newmont Gold Company&apos;s Gold Quarry sulfidic carbonaceous ore was inoculated with an iron-grown culture of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans to form a 495 ton test heap. Biooxidation was conducted for a period of 100 days. The most active period of biooxidation occurred during the first 40 days of pretreatment? About 35 to 40% of the sulfide was oxidized. The extent of biooxidation was considered good as the ore particle size was relatively large 58% >1?9 cm (&apos;/< inch). The larger particle size ore limited the extent of bacterial activity. The field test demonstrated the ability to conduct biooxidation in a small pilot test heap. Thiourea was evaluated for extraction of gold from the biooxidized preg-robbing ore.

Recovery of Co from slag is a recent advancement in the extractive metallurgy of nonferrous metals. In this study a DC arc technology at laboratory scale has been applied to investigate the selective recovery of Co from slag, under three different flux types with an emphasis on influencing the activity of FeOx, SiO2 and CoO in the slag. It is known that reduction of slag by carbon is only up to a certain level after which, the recovery will depend on the chemistry of the slag, hence the need to modify the slag chemistry. Two power settings were employed to induce higher temperatures and aggressive agitation. The results were interpreted by comparing how much Co and Fe was in the slag and alloy. TiO2 reduced the amount of Fe in the product alloy compared to when CaO and CaF2 were used. The change in power did not seem to have had a major effect on the recovery although the amount of material lost to flue dust was more at a higher power rate.

THIS SUAMMARY is shown in Minerals Yearbook volumes I and III of this series on mineral production in the United States, its island possessions, the Canal Zone, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and on the principal minerals imported into and ex- ported from the United States. The several commodity and area chapters contain further details on production. A summary table comparing world and U.S. mineral production also is included. Mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing. The stage of measurement used in the chapter is normally what is termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes for some minerals the product of auxiliary processing operations at or near mines.

In 1970, the federal Clean Air Act was passed, promulgating limits on the emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) from large stationary sources that would affect local air quality. The brunt of this regulation was felt by the electric utility industry, especially those units generating electricity with coal-fired boilers. The law hastened development of a new industry, flue gas desulfurization (FGD), which is composed of three major segments: the electric utility, the FGD equipment suppliers (the scrubbing modules), and the scrubbing chemical suppliers. Dravo&apos;s experience suggested the equipment end of the business, but market analysis recommended investigating the chemical processes involved in the removal of the SO2 gas. This resulted in the formation of Dravo Lime Co. to manufacture and market reagents to the FGD industry. This paper will briefly describe the Thiosorbic lime scrubbing process and review Dravo&apos;s innovative mine and calcining facility.

The safety of mine workers depends on the proper installation of roof supports to prevent the ground from collapsing into the working areas of an underground mine. As new support systems are developed, they need to be properly evaluated to make sure that they are capable of providing adequate roof support before they are first used in a mine. In addition to making certain that the supports meet basic safety criteria, the limitations of the support need to be fully defined in order to avoid improper application of a particular support design. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) operates a world-class facility called the Safety Structures Testing Laboratory. This laboratory contains a unique load frame, the Mine Roof Simulator, which is capable of simulating the ground behavior in underground mines for conducting full-scale evaluations of roof support systems. Safety performance testing protocols using the unique Mine Roof Simulator have been developed for both standing roof support systems and longwall shield supports. The purpose of this paper is to describe these test procedures. The protocol for standing roof supports incorporates seven test series:( 1) uniform loading baseline tests, (2) height evaluations, (3) asymmetric loading, (4) biaxial loading, (5) load rate studies, (6) active loading determination, and (7) static loading evaluations. For longwall shields, a four-series test program that accurately simulates in-service conditions on a longwall face is proposed. This test program consists of (1) transfer of horizontal load to the caving shield-lemniscate assembly (zero-friction test),(2) point loading of shield joints due to lateral movement or rotation of the canopy, (3) evaluation of leg socketand leg cylinder integrity, and (4) face-to-waste racking of the shield. In addition, an evaluation of the shield’s hydraulic components will be conducted prior to the performance testing. These protocols will provide state-of-the-art safety performance evaluations of emerging support technologies, as well as a means to assess the safety of both new and aging longwall shields. Hence, this effort will enhance the safety of mine workers by ensuring that critical support elements are properly designed and that aging supports are retired before their support capability is jeopardized.

Commodity price down cycles are a fact of life in the mining industry. And companies pre-pare for them as best they can. Evenso, operations are still curtailed or closed during those cycles, profits shrink, layoffs are inevitable and many companies do not survive. However, one of the few good things that occurs during down cycles is the new, innovative exploration, mining and processing technologies that come about during hard times. To survive the lean times, the mining industry turns to improved technology to decrease costs and hold the bottom line. And, because mining is a cyclical business, each down cycle brings about technology improvements that carry over into the good times.

Trends in PGM demand?The conference paper will cover a concise analysis of demand trends, which will include the major PGM end-use sectors (autocatalysis, jewellery, glass, petroleum, nitric acid, medical/dental) and will touch on the investment sector. Reference will be made to environmental legislation affecting global emission standards, trends in PGM loadings and the substitutability of platinum and palladium in this end-use sector. Observations will also be made on the jewellery sector, and the development of Chinese and Japanese demand. Trends in primary and secondary PGM supply?Similarly the paper will summarize historic and current global mine supply and primary production trends for PGMs, referencing recent expansions, their deliverability, and other projects coming on line. Consideration will be given to the grade and geology of PGMs worldwide and metallurgical developments. PGMs produced as by-products of base metal production and early PGM recycling estimates will also be appraised. In order to gain a wide-ranging appreciation of the industry?s long-term cost trends of producing virgin PGM metals, the paper will look at the cost and profit dynamics of global production on a regional basis (Western Bushveld, Eastern Bushveld, Northern Bushveld, Zimbabwe, USA, Canada and Russia). Extrapolating tomorrow?s PGM market and forecasting metal prices?Based on established industry trends and market practices Stephen Forrest will conclude by unveiling a variety of thought-provoking extrapolations of today?s and tomorrows platinum, palladium and rhodium markets to conference delegates. Importantly, having highlighted major developing PGM market trends in end-use (specifically on the elasticity of demand to high metal prices), primary and secondary PGM supply trends, in addition to presenting a carefully reasoned forecast of industry supply costs and margin trends, Stephen Forrest will conclude by estimating long-range PGM metal price trends. Other relevant market factors including industrial production, global currency rates and regional political factors will be deliberated.

THE ASSAY FOR COPPER. SOMEONE some time ago remarked that some chemists still insist on telling us how to determine copper by the electrolytic method. The. writer must confess that he believes that everything is not known definitely as yet as to how the exact amount of copper is determined in such material as purest commercial electrolytic copper. Some of us are not yet convinced that the pure copper atom is at all times deposited from an acid solution and that no oxygen or hydrogen will, under certain conditions, accompany it. Difficulties with impurer material are frequent, but erroneous results are not always apparent, since these do not speak so readily for themselves as those in the first case. By this is meant that if a chemist finds 100 per cent. of copper in electrolytic copper it is pretty certain that he perceives the result to be wrong, while if he finds 0.1 per cent. of copper too much in a very impure material he is far more likely to be unconscious of his error. These, in a wide experience, are frequent happenings and the writer has always looked with interest to publications on this subject. In turn, he :feels justified in giving to others a few of his own observations. Up to a few years ago there were two methods of electrolytic copper assay in technical use, which had in common, that the amount of copper deposited on the cathode did not exceed 2 g., and they differed in that, for the one a large sample 1 (20 to 80 g.) was taken from the general sample by a splitting device, dissolved, and from the solution a small portion (to contain 1 or 2, g. of copper) measured out for the electrolytic deposition; in the other Method the copper was determined, generally in 1-g. portions of the separated coarse and fine portions of the sample, all of which passed -a 16 or 20-mesh screen, being accomplished by a 40-mesh screen,

THE immediate vicinity of the sea-shore, affording special facility for the exportation of ores, makes it possible to work certain mines in the Vladivostok district, which, in more remote places of Siberia, would remain unproductive. Outside of the city of Vladivostok the population is small and the country is very little prospected. Additional discoveries of valuable deposits like the large body of calamine which has recently been opened in the neighborhood of earlier worked lead-silver ores, in the Tetiuhe valley, are still in the field of possibilities. For many years gold alone was produced, in part from the coastal rivers and in part from a quartz-vein on Askold island near Vladivostok. But the production is diminishing, and prospectors are looking for other rivers in the interior, such as the tributaries of the Ussuri. These rivers are now more accessible than formerly, due to the slow but gradual development, of colonization by the Russian peasants. The few natives of the country, called Orodjones, are of the Chinese race. They resemble the North American Indian and are hardy fur-hunters. They have given some attention to placers and have already shown good specimens of gold-dust from the rivers Iman, Bikin, Noto, etc. Coal-mining was begun in the Vladivostok region more than 20 years ago, but in a somewhat irregular way. The industry is not as yet important and the best coal-seams are badly prospected, or ire even neglected. Copper, lead, and iron exist in several places. The amounts give some encouragement to the anticipation that the discoveries will give rise to important metallurgical works. I here present a review of the various deposits, based upon such safe information as is in hand, when I have not drawn upon my personal observations. Subsidence events occurred over inactive room and pillar (R&P) mines, including abandoned mines or sealed portions of active mines, are classified as unplanned subsidence because of their timing and distribution are unpredictable. When investigating such subsidence cases, many uncertainties exist and disputes often focused on whether the observed structural damages are caused by mine subsidence or other natural or artificial causes. However, solid evidences to identify the causes are often lacking. In order to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation, good knowledge in subsidence theories and other ground control subjects and broad experience are required.

Approach As part of a research study aimed at reducing human error accidents in mining the Bureau of Mines developed a computerized information retrieval system which provides relevant human factors or ergonomics information on 19 mining-related special interest categories.

SUGGESTIONS that existing schools give instruction bearing on the mineral industry, or that schools for that purpose should be established in the United States, began to be made early, and it would require too much space to catalogue them all. Some of the more important may be mentioned to indicate their general character. In the "advertisement to such parents as have now (or expect to have) children prepared to be educated in the College of New York," which appeared in the New York Mercury of June 3, 1754, Samuel Johnson, the first president of King&apos;s College, the predecessor of Columbia, said that it was the "design of this college to instruct and perfect the youth," among other things, "in the arts of Numbering and Measuring of Surveying, and Navigation and Geography. . . . and in the Air, Water and Earth around us, and the various kinds of Meteors, Stones, Mines and Minerals, Plants and Animals; and in the knowledge of all Nature in the Heavens above us, and of everything useful for the Comfort, Convenience and the Elegance of Life . . . " Though the concept that natural science should be used to enlarge the bounds of human life was thus implicit at Columbia from the , very beginning (John Stevens graduated from it in 1768, James Renwick in 1807, Horatio Allen in 1833, and A. W. Craven in 1899), it was only during the period of Renwick&apos;s professorship of Natural and Experimental Philosophy and Chemistry (1830- 1853) that much attention was given to applied science.* Among the Austin papers, published by the American Historical Association,~ there is a draft in Stephen F. THE prospect of winning aluminum from clay was recorded almost a century ago at a time when the metal was no more than a curiosity.? As the industry developed, and it has probably developed faster than that of any other metal, the expanding need for raw materials was adequately met by the ample supplies of bauxite ore. As with the other metals older in industry, however, lower grade ores have gradually entered the raw-material field through improvements in ore dressing, insufficienoy of high-grade ore supplies, favorable geographic location, or national necessity for domestic supply. So with aluminum, or alumina, which has been established as the requisite intermediate, the time may have come when a satisfactory process, with favorable location and suitable raw materials, can hold a sound place both in metallurgy and economics. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the Ancor process and its proposed application in treatment of clay in a plant now under construction at Harleyville, South Carolina, by the Defense Plant Corporation. DEVELOPMENT OF THE ANCOR PROCESS The Ancor process has developed through successive stages of laboratory investigation, pilot-plant demonstration using nepheline syenite and pilot-plant demonstration using kaolin-type day from South Carolina, and is now in preparation for unit trial on an operating plant basis using the latter material. The laboratory studies were carried out over a number of years in the laboratory of the American Nepheline Corporation in Rochester, N. Y., and for the same company in the ore-dressing laboratory of Beattie Gold Mines, Que. Ltd. at Duparquet, Quebec. Both companies are associated with Ventures Ltd., Toronto, and its associated American companies. The work was originally undertaken with a view to recovery of alumina and alkalies from nepheline syenite as an adjunct to the American Nepheline Company&apos;s established business in the glass and ceramic trades, but as a process developed the possibility of application to clay and other aluminous raw materials become apparent and the laboratory studies were broadened to include these as well. Under the more pressing impetus of wartime needs and possibilities, pilot-plant operations were undertaken at the Canadian Bureau of Mines Ore Dressing Laboratories in Ottawa, and for purposes of demonstration under joint sponsorship of the Canadian Bureau of Mines, The American Nepheline Corporation, and The Aluminum Company of Canada Ltd.

Barrick Goldstrike Mines, Inc. Betze-Post open pit operations, located in northeastern Nevada, have experienced slope instability attributed to the presence of generally weak rock mass conditions, local adverse structural geology and perched groundwater. Ground movements are monitored with acombination of optical survey, extensometers, inclinometers, and time domain reflectometry (TDR).The slope monitoring system at Goldstrike includes two robotics theodolites, which provide real-time coverage for all highwall areas. Survey instruments are housed in specially designed climate controlled shelters in locations where all slopes can be observed. A “remote” computer housed with each theodolite collects data. The “base” computer, located in the mine offices, is used to access data from the remote computers via radio modem.

Manufacturers of brick and tile are showing growing interest in the possibility of manufacture of a clay bonded block. The block would have the shape of concrete block, but would be made without the use of Portland cement, Instead, the block would be made&apos; from mixtures&apos; of an aggregate and the present raw materials of the brick industry. The finished units would weigh 20 to 30 pounds and meet the specifications for Grade A concrete block. The present status of the clay block development shows one manufacturer actually in production of these units$, two additional manufacturers are attempting production and many manufacturers are actively engaged in development work. At least four major research laboratories are engaged in the development program. There are several different processes available for clay block production. These processes differ primarily in the type of aggregate used or in the type of forming operation selected. I would like summarize these possible methods.

Os rejeitos gerados na mineração de carvão, sob condições atmosféricas e a possível presença de bactérias acidofílicas proporcionam a oxidação primária do sulfeto de ferro, formando sulfatos e ácido sulfúrico. Com a redução do pH da água, ocorre a mobilização de metais contidos no material, gerando a drenagem ácida de mina (DAM). A DAM causa um impacto nocivo na qualidade da água superficial ou subterrânea. Uma das tecnologias de prevenção da geração da DAM consiste no método de aditivos alcalinos. Assim, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar o controle da DAM pela mistura de rejeito de carvão com escória de aciaria elétrica do forno panela. A metodologia utilizada baseou-se nos ensaios estáticos e ensaios cinéticos. Os resultados demonstram que o rejeito de carvão gera DAM. Contudo os problemas ambientais podem ser em grande parte resolvidos pela mistura do rejeito com a escória na proporção acima de 10:10. Os ensaios cinéticos demonstram que, nessa condição, ocorre aumento do pH e redução do potencial redox e sulfatos na água lixiviada. Desta forma, a disposição conjunta de escória de aciaria elétrica do forno panela com rejeito de carvão é uma alternativa viável para o controle da geração de DAM em minerações de carvão.
