This paper attempts to highlight some of the problems encountered in the economic exploitation of the deeper coal seams by opencast mining methods. The major cost elements of three methods of overburden removal are examined in relation to the overall cost of winning coal from deeper-lying coal seams. The three overburden removal methods examined are dragline stripping and two systems combining dragline stripping with shovels and trucks at varying depths of overburden. A dragline is, undoubtedly, the most cost effective system of overburden removal for depths of up to 30 metres but it is suggested that, when dealing with incremental overburden depths in excess of 30 metres, engineers should consider carefully the possibility of using a shovel and truck operation, or other system, to augment the use of a dragline.

Many types of micro-organisms inhabit iron ore deposits contributing to biogenic formation and conversion of iron oxides and associated minerals. Bacteria such as Paenibacillus polymyxa are capable of significantly altering the surface chemical behaviour of iron ore minerals such as haematite, alumina, calcite and silica. Differing mineral surface affinities of bacterial cells and metabolic products such as proteins and polysaccharides can be utilised to induce their flotation or flocculation. Mineral-specific bioreagents such as proteins are generated when bacteria are grown in the presence of haematite, alumina, calcite and silica. Alumina-grown bacterial cells and proteins separated from such cells were found to be capable of separating alumina from haematite. Biodegradation of iron ore flotation collectors such as amines and oleates can be effectively utilised to achieve environmental control in iron ore processing mills.

Keywords: Self-propagating high temperature synthesis, AlN, Powder synthesis The particle size and shape effects of starting raw powders on the synthesis of aluminum nitride by self-propagating high temperature technique under high nitrogen pressure were investigated with various AlN diluents and Al reactants. It was found that the structure of beds of the starting raw particles largely affected the pore channels for nitrogen gas infiltration as well as the passages for combustion propagation before and during the reaction, resulting in the morphology and purity changes of the synthesized products. The AlN product of purity over 98% with about 30 microns was obtained.

The object of this paper is to describe the electric equipment at the iron-ore mines of Penn Iron Mining Co., Vulcan, Mich. and of Republic Iron Co., Republic, Mich.; to give the results of tests; and to discuss the methods in use from an operating as well as from an efficiency standpoint. Electricity was introduced at the Penn mines for pumping, hoisting, and compressing air in the spring of 1907, upon the completion of a hydro-electric plant built by that company on the Menominee river about 4 miles from the mines. This plant was described in a paper1 presented before the Lake Superior Mining Institute. A paper2 presented at a meeting of the same Institute describes some of the operating features, and the safety devices of the electric hoist at the Curry shaft were briefly described in the Proceedings of the First Co-operative Safety Congress held under the auspices of the Association of Iron and Steel Electrical Engineers at Milwaukee, Wis., Sept. 30 to Oct. 5, 1912. Generating PoweR Plants After the success of electrical operation was assured, a second set of water wheels and generator was installed at the falls, for which provision had been made in the original design and in the construction of the foundations, and later three additional wires were added to the main transmission line, doubling its capacity and reducing the line loss. The general conditions of this installation are particularly favorable for hydro-electric operation. In the neighborhood of three-fourths of the power used is for mine pumping, which in the main is regular and continuous. Single crystal rods of cadmium collapse under uniaxial compression into peculiar kinks if the (0001) glide plane is nearly parallel to the axis of compression. In his report first describing this behavior, Orowan1 proposed that these "kink bands" do not develop entirely by ordinary gliding and twinning but by a special mechanism in which glide lamellae of uniform thickness snap abruptly to a tilted position that permits lattice continuity across the glide planes. He concluded that a portion of each boundary of a kink band consists of a plane (non-crystallo-graphic) which bisects the angle between the glide planes on the two sides of it, and along which the bending and the dislocations are concentrated. The data presented by Orowan seemed to us to be insuffcient to conclude that a wholly new mechanism of deformation was responsible for the kinks. Therefore, we have investigated zinc, which is hexagonal close-packed and has an axial ratio near to cadmium, to see whether similar bands are produced, and whether the ordinary mechanisms of glide, bend-gliding, twinning, and the formation of deformation bands can account for its mode of deformation. We find that kinks form profusely in zinc as shown in Fig 1. The structure of these kinks, reported below, seems to require no new mechanism for their explanation, but indicates that kink bands are a special form of deformation bands and develop gradually, solely from basal glide. A theory covering the formation and structure of the bands is presented in detail because it is seldom possible to study deformation bands under such simple conditions, yet many principles applying to these kinks should also apply to deformation bands in general. Experimental Procedures Single crystal rods of 2-3 mm diam and 10-15 cm length were grown by the Brideman technique from swaged wire of Horsehead Special zinc in un-coated pyrex tubes. Orientations of the rods were determined with an optical goniometer after cleaving the rods at liquid air temperature. Crystals of desired orientations were then selected and used as "seeds" to grow additional crystals approximately 4 ft in length from which all specimens were cut. The wires were compressed in two ways: in a simple hydraulic handpress —a "soft" machine—and in a Riehle hydraulic testing machine modified to produce very "stiff" action by the simple expedient of inserting lengths of steel bars at the sides of the zinc crystals between the compression plates. For metallographic examination, the specimens were mounted in sealing wax. THE Dust Symposium was attended by approximately 100 persons, nearly all of whom remained from the starting hour (2 p. m.) until the use of the auditorium was demanded for another meeting at 5:30 p. in. In calling the meeting to order, D. Harrington made a few remarks as to the importance of the health dust problem in mining as well as in general industry and expressed gratification that the subject is now out in the open and that mining people are desirous of ascertaining the facts. B. F. Tillson acted as chairman of the meeting. The milling executive who desires to know what to do to prevent his workers from being unduly exposed to the dust hazard can get much out of the paper by D. E. Cummings, who has been doing much work in mines trying to keep -the dust in the air within safe limits. His recommendations indicate that the main protection of the worker in mines is by adequate ventilation, supplemented by the extensive use of water in drilling, as well as in water curtaining to condition air both in regard to dust content and to temperatures. Blasting was shown to be one of the chief causes for dust and it was recommended that whenever feasible all blasting should be delayed to the end of the working shift.

Mill circumferential speed, the number of passes of pulp through the grinding chamber, media type, size and filling ratio were investigated in an attempt to determine how to effectively grind copper concentrates in a stirred mill. The stirred mill product fineness was enhanced to some extent by decreasing media size, high media filling, and an increased number of passes of the pulp through the grinding chamber. Shape also plays a major role in grinding media effectiveness, with spherically shaped media producing a finer size. The fineness of the product increases with increasing power consumption but the method of energy transfer is very important in energy utilization. The effect of the mill parameters on copper flotation was evaluated. Copper recovery was influenced by grinding media size, mill speed and the number of pulp passes through the grinding chamber.

Early strategic mine planning includes decisions over the organisation of work and workforce accommodation. These decisions involve significant commitments that affect not only employee quality of life but also the impacts and relationships with existing local communities. Strategies for workforce accommodation are characteristically community-based (either as purpose-built company towns or integrated within existing local communities) or commuter (fly-in, fly-out) mine camps. The quality of accommodation underpins the fulfilment, morale and motivation of employees. This is not only relevant to productivity and safety, but also to recruitment and retention, particularly with the current onset of a significant human resources crisis. In the event that communities exist in proximity to a proposed mine then the accommodation strategy selected can influence the value-adding potential for the sustainable development of such communities. This early planning is particularly challenging where mine locations are isolated and/or face significant economic, social and political adversity. This paper draws upon a case study review of five large mining projects implemented in three South American countries, selected to cover a range of scenarios and accommodation strategies. The review aims to advance our understanding of the complexity of the underlying planning issues. Each scenario considered the prevailing environmental, social, economic and political situation, together with the adopted accommodation strategy. The case study review aimed to identify lessons learned and to make recommendations for advancing mineworkersÆ accommodation planning practice.

IDO not want to omit anything in which fire or its operation has a part, if I know or can tell it, and have already told you so many other useful, powerful, and ingenious effects (finally of powder and other' fire deadly and very injurious to all living things, indeed, composed for the destruction of those who possess it as well as those who do not) but I do not want the end of my writing to be in tragedy. Therefore I wished to tell you how, from these fires composed of forceful and horrible mate¬rials bringing harm and terror to men, a happy and pleasing effect is also produced and, instead of fleeing from it, the people willingly go to see it. Among others I remember that it was once customary to use these in Florence and in Siena, more than elsewhere. The chief feast day celebrated. by one of these cities is the day of the birth of Saint John, and the other is the Assumption of Our Lady, on the fifteenth of the month of August. In the morning they visit the shrines with great devotion and solemnity, displaying their pomp as much as possible, and later they hunt lions, wild bulls, untamed horses, and many other animals. In the same public squares there was also erected as a decoration an edifice fixed in the ground in the middle of this space, or hanging from a heavy rope crossing between the loftiest points of equal height that could be found in that place. This they have done and still do, and perhaps in time to come will continue to do when opportune. This structure was usually of wood; indeed it is necessary that the latticework of its construction be made only of this. It was covered and en¬larged by tying and fastening hay on top to bring it almost to completion and then papier-mâché was applied. "The regional stratigraphy of the Lower Carboniferous Windsor Group in the Moncton Subbasin indicates that evaporites could be present in the Marysville Subbasin, part of what was formerly called the Central New Brunswick Platform. The Windsor Group consists of basement-fringing, algal build-ups (Gays River Formation), in places with intercalated siliciclastics (Parleeville), which are laterally equivalent to deeper-water, very thin to thinly bedded, euxinic limestone (Macumber). The Macumber is overlain by stratiform, nodular to mosaic anhydrite (Upperton) that is hosted by carbonate or calcareous siliciclastics. The sulphate also is equivalent, in part, to the algal buildups. Deep-water salts (Cassidy Lake) which overlie and in places are laterally equivalent to Upperton rocks have a basincentre distribution. The Windsor Group is overlain by shallow water evaporites and mudstones (Clover Hill) or by greenish grey mudstone (""transitional beds""). The paleogeographic distribution of these rocks provide important clues that help predict where deposits of salt and potash can occur.IntroductionCurrently there are three known potash deposits in southern New Brunswick (2, 3 and 4, in Fig. I). All three deposits occur in the Windsor Group of the Moncton Subbasin, but until recently their exact stratigraphic position within the group was not known.The Windsor Group is a cyclic sequence of carbonates, evaporites and red beds that is up to 1.0 km in thickness (Schenk 1969, p. 1038). It is Late Mississippian (Visean) in age and the type area is near Windsor, Nova Scotia. The group was named by Dawson (1873) but the rocks were described earlier by Hartt (1867). Dawson (ibid.) was the first to assign rocks in southern New Brunswick to the Windsor Group."

Before examining a fire-clay in the labori~tory for its resistance to heat or to fluxes, the sample is always ground to an impalpable powder. But when the clay is actually used for the manufacture of bricka, blocks, pots, etc., it is not ground to a uniform size, the particles varying from coarse grains to the finest slimes. The natural inference is that the tests with finely-ground substances mill give lower results than if the materials are tested just as they are going to be used. The, following experiments were made to find out how far this inference is justified. The method employed for fusion was Seger's direct method,* and, for fluxing, the modified Bischof method, described in the paper on that subject presented at the present meeting, The first question to be decided was, how large the test-cones ought to be made, to include representative proportions of the diflerentrsized particles colnposing the mixture. The temperature and strain rate dependence of the flow stress ratio and the stvain rate dependence qi the flow stress of annealed polycrystalline a zirconiur were determined over the temperature range 30 0" to 1000°K. Some evidence was found for strain aging and discontinuous flow in the temperature ranges 520" to 650°Kand650" to 760°K, respectively. The Cottvell-Stokes relationship was obtained when deformation occurred by twinning as well as slip. The flow stress ratio showed a strong dependence on temperature and strain rate above 800°K. The expevirnental evidence indicated that the rate-controllitzg mechanism for the deformation of a zirconium above 800°K was dislocation climb, and that the deformation was not thermally activated in the range 520" to 800°K. The stacking-fault energy of a zirconium was estimated to be about 250 ergs per sq cm. A knowledge of the temperature and strain rate dependence of the applied stress necessary to deform a crystalline solid is essential for understanding the thermally activated processes occurring during deformation.' Several experimental techniques have been developed for studying these processes.273 One of the techniques is the deter mi nation of the strain rate dependence of the flow stress at constant temperature. In close-packed crystals, it has often been observed that the change in stress due to a change in the strain rate varies linearly with the flow stress, (~1,' This relationship, known as the Cottre ll-Stokes law, is obeyed when deformation occurs by glide alone. However, when deformation occurs by twinning as well as glide, there is disagreement among different investigators on whether the Cottrell-Stokes law is observed. Whereas Thornton et ~1.~find departures from Cottrell-Stokes law when twinning occurs in copper, ~avis~ and sasinski? find that Cottrell-Stokes law is obeyed when deformation occurs by twinning as well as slip in cadmium and magnesium, respectively. One of the main objectives of this study is to determine whether the Cottrell-Stokes law is obeyed when deformation occurs by twinning as well as slip. Posteriormente su uso se extendió para tratar mezclas con el "mineral del recuerdo", incrementando el ratio de explotación de dicho mineral. Por ello, la concentradora debe ser re-diseñada para adaptarse a las características del mineral crudo y definir el contenido de pirita en el mineral de cabeza. En este sentido, el presente texto describe la eficiencia de la productividad en la mina concentradora Huanzala a través del conocimiento de las características del mineral (piritoso, skarn, shiroji), las condiciones de producción, reservas del mineral y así mejorar el proyecto de producción en los minerales de Huanzalá y Recuerdo.

South Bulga is a new longwall operation located in the Hunter Valley coal-mining region in Southeastern Australia. The mine’s objective is to achieve productivity levels significantly higher than the current industry average. From the day longwall production began, South Bulga’s output was below both budget and industry expectations, primarily because of the poor performance of the conveyor system. In the past, conveyor systems have been seen as an adjunct to the mine plan, not as an integral part. At past production levels, this approach may have been acceptable. In today’s mining operations, the conveyor system must be treated as integral and vital to the mining operation. The conveyor system is analogous to the vascular or circulatory system of the human body. Of itself, the system does not do anything, but if it is not functioning satisfactorily, the mine cannot operate.

The 1806 zone is part of a Au-rich volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit at the Rambler Camp on the Baie \/erte Peninsula, northwestern Newfoundland, and is characterized by high Au grades (3.97 g/t), relatively low Cu and Zn grades (0.60 wt% Cu, 1.17 wt% Zn), and moderate Ag grades (27.83 g/t) at ca. 0.37 Mt ore. Gold and Ag occur as electrum and different Ag varieties including Ag-Hg ± Au alloys, miargyrite, and pyrargyrite that occur often in close proximity to electrum. Additionally, Ag-, As-, Sb-, and Sn-bearing sulfosalts are frequently observed and usually close to electrum. These textural relations strongly favor a syngenetic/magmatic origin for the 1806 zone, despite having a metamorphic overprint.

Data on health-related illnesses and disease in the mining industry are scarce, and information on rates and costs is not readily available. Substantial amounts of research are being directed to addressing these issues, including work at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) mining health and safety laboratories in Spokane and Pitts-burgh. This paper briefly discusses the current status of some miner health-related issues, including those involving coal dust, silica dust, diesel particulate matter, asbestos, noise, lead, welding fumes, and skin disorders, as well as research and other activities aimed at protecting miners from occupational illnesses and disease.

The only known large deposits of talc in Alabama occur near Winterboro, Talladega County. Preliminary examinations were made, and work by the Bureau of Mines was recommended. The deposits were investigated to determine the amount and grade of talc present and to search for new talc deposits in the general area. Seventy-five holes, totaling 3370.4 feet, were drilled with Government-owned core drills from August 1, 1948, to February 11, 1949, and 27 samples were taken for assay. This report presents the factual data disclosed by drilling and the results of beneficiation of the talc.
