Studies by the Bureau of Mines have identified geologic structures in mine roof rock that contribute to many roof falls in Appalachian coal mines. These structures, including paleochannels, scours, pinchouts, slickensides, clay veins, crevasse splays, and joints, can often be identified during, and sometimes before, mine development. Mine projections can be revised to reduce the adverse effects of discontinuitites in roof structure; large roof areas of laminated sandstone or incompetent strata generally can be delineated or inferred from exploratory drill hole data, and the need for supplementary support can be anticipated. Accurate descriptions of roof geology also provide some indication of optimum length and type of roof bolts that should be installed.

The use of calcium peroxide for enhanced heap detoxification has been investigated on the laboratory scale using heap leach columns. The addition of calcium peroxide to the ore prior to leaching resulted in a significant increase in the rate at which the leached ore was detoxified and this led to an overall decrease in the total heap leach cycle time. This decrease could allow a minesite to increase the ore throughput or gold leaching time and generate additional revenue. The process is of particular relevance to reuseable leach pad operating though pennanent pad systems could also benefit.

"INTRODUCTION A preliminary examination of the Green Monster and Benich copper prospects was made by engineers E. W. Newnan and George N. Bennett, of the Bureau of Mines, on December 13, 1943. In an unpublished report, it was stated that certain geologic features appeared to be similar to those associated with the copper deposits of the nearby Butte district. On these premises, a preliminary diamond-drilling program was recommended to explore 300 to 400 feet below the mineralized outcrops for the possible presence of a sulfide enrichment zone. In accordance with that recommendation, three holes were drilled. This report presents the data provided by that preliminary drilling exploration.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell D. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary exminations, perform the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. The chemical analyses and assays included in this report were performed under the direction of A. C. Rice, acting engineer in charge, Bureau of Minos Rare and Precious Metals Experiment Station at Reno, Nev. The diamond-drill cores were logged by geologists of the Federal Geological Survey."

Six potential locations along the west shore of Lake Mead were evaluated to site anew water intake pumping station for the SNWA. The evaluations were based upon geotechnical exploration results and conceptual intake pumping station designs. The exploration included geologic mapping, geophysical testing, underwater ROV inspections and borings. Ground surface and underground chamber pumping station designs were considered. Sites at Saddle Island, Black Canyon and Hoover Dam are geotechnically suitable. A Saddle Island site was selected because it has the most favorable conditions for the intake pumping station and the aqueduct to the Las Vegas valley.

"Asbestos Corporation Limited, incorporated in 1925, operates four asbestos mines and three asbestos mills in the Thetford Mines 1•egion of Quebec's Eastern Townships. A unique asbestos orebody, located in the Ungava Peninsula of Nouveau Quebec, was purchased by Asbestos Corporation Limited in 1964 and commenced production in 1972. As there were no existing facilities in the isolated, arctic region of Asbestos Hill, it was necessary for Asbestos Corporation Limited to construct at Deception Bay a deepsea wharf, a large ungraded fibre shed, a power plant and camp facilities. Forty-two miles of road were needed and were constructed from Deception Bay to Asbestos Hill. At Asbestos Hill, a complete crushing-drying-milling complex, a power plant, pe1•sonnel accommodations and open-pit facilities were provided. Unloading facilities and a fib1•e finishing mill we1l constructed at Nordenham, West Germany. The ""Asbestos Hill- Nordenham Story” is divided into individual papers covering all aspects of the engineering, construction and operation of this unique enterprise. Particular emphasis has been placed on those unusual aspects caused by the isolated location, arctic conditions, short shipping season and the deep permafrost."

During the 1920's lead consumption in the United States reached the highest average total ever known. For the ten-year period 1921-'30, it was slightly over 600,000 tons per year, or say 50,000 tons per month, and the price averaged 6.81 per lb. But the I930's witnessed a severe drop in the consumption of lead is in other business activities. The average U.S. consumption for the ten-year period 1930-'40 was slightly less than 380,000 tons per year, or under 32,000 per month, with the average price dropping to 1.191c. per lb. The outlook in early 1939 was for a continuation of this average consumption and price a demand of 35,000 to 40,000 tons per month, and a price level of 4 1/2 to 5c. in the United States.

"The growing interest for natural materials as an environmentally friendly alternative for the substitution of energy intensive and non-sustainable synthetic materials, has motivated the use of lignocellulosic fibers as reinforcement of biocomposites. The sisal fiber, a relatively unknown lignocellulosic fiber with potential for composite reinforcement, still needs to characterize for possible engineer applications. Therefore, the present work analyzed the sisal fiber by means of Fourier Transform Infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopy. The sisal fiber FTIR spectrum revealed main absorption bands typical of any lignocellulosic fiber. However, some specific bands as well as bands broadening and intensity suggested particular activities for functional molecular groups in the sisal fiber.IntroductionIn recent decades, environmental issues related to worldwide pollution and climate changes, mainly the global warming, are motivating new paradigms for the development of our society. Among these, the use of natural materials in substitution for non-sustainable synthetic materials, obtained from non-renewable ores and petroleum, is increasingly being considered. In particular, natural fibers extracted from plants are, in this 21st century, experiencing a surge as composite reinforcement [1-11 ], following their replacement by synthetic fibers, specially the glass fiber, during the second half of the 20th century [1-2-8].In addition to environmental benefits [12-13] the lignocellulosic fibers present economical advantages, such as worldwide abundance and comparatively low costs as well as some technical properties associated with flexibility and toughness[ll], which contribute to the performance of automobile components fabricated with natural fibers composites[14-16].Among the less common lignocellulosic fibers that only recently have been investigated[l 7], the fibers extracted from the stem of the sisal plant, shows in Fig 1, reveals a potential for polymer composite reinforcement."

Current mine development requires the safe, 'expedient, economical construction of vertical shafts for ventilation and access in diverse ground conditions. Advancements in large diameter shaft drilling have lead to exceptional mechanical refinements of shaft drilling technology. The author traces the history of the equipment and methods employed by the large diameter shaft drilling industry and explores likely paths of future development. A few case histories are cited to illustrate the adaptability of shaft drilling as a versatile tool for advanced worldwide mining operations. Safety, schedules, cost, environmental impact, and capability are discussed to assist the mining engineer in the investigation of feasible projects.

The Mount Isa copper concentrator started operation in 1973. Its secondary grinding circuit consisted of two 5 meters diameter ball mills in closed circuit with 505 mm cyclones. At the design throughput of 800 t/h, the 80% passing size of the circuit product (P80) was about 140 µm. The then Mount Isa Mines Limited (?MIM?) installed two autogenous grinding (?AG?) mills in 1991 to replace two stages of crushing, a rod milling stage and one primary ball milling stage. One of the AG mills was later converted to semi-autogenous grinding (?SAG?) operation by the addition of a steel grinding medium to achieve the designed plant throughput of 800 t/h. The cyclone over-flow P80of the secondary ball mill circuit was reduced to 120 µm by the increased operating power in the AG/SAG mill circuits. The two secondary balls mills had a grinding power of 5.2 MW. A mineralogical study of the milled products indicated that half of this grinding power was sufficient for adequate chalcopyrite liberation. Eliminating one of the secondary ball mills could reduce energy and operating costs by more than A$2 million dollars per year. An optimisation project team was established to achieve the predicted power saving. Grinding circuit simulations were conducted for different circuit configurations. Ball mill parameters such as ball size, ball charge and feed slurry density were optimised. Cyclone body diameter, spigot and vortex finder sizes, and cyclone types were tested. The secondary ball mill circuit was redesigned and several proposed circuits were run as trial production campaigns to determine their operability and efficiency. The plant trials confirmed that one of the secondary ball mills could be decommissioned. Significant cost savings were achieved as a result. The success of the project demonstrates optimising grinding circuits can not only deliver the plant performance, but also a much lower unit operating cost through energy and maintenance savings.

in March 1999, the School of Mining Engineering at the University of New South Wales carried out a series of underground trials using " Evermine", a South African developed two-part water based polymer membrane. The aim of the trials was to determine the potential of a spray-on polymer membrane such as Evermine as an alternative to conventional rib support systems The mine selected was Angus Place colliery, reputed to have some of the worst ground conditions of any Australian underground coal mine. Ribs at Angus Place are supported by conventional pattern bolting supplemented by wire mesh. The trials indicate that there is significant potential for the introduction of polymer membranes into the underground coal minim; industry Initial results indicated that ribs that had been sprayed exhibited less displacement and spalling than unsprayed ribs. particularly when subjected to abutment loads from an approaching long-wall Further research will he required to conclusively rate the performance of Evermine in comparison to other products in the market and the long term performance of the product

It highlights the transition from early metallurgical forecasting methods to a comprehensive model that includes spatial distribution of metallurgical forecasts. In the present work, the viscosities of molten FenO-MgO-SiO2 and FenO-MgO-CaO-SiO2 semi-synthetic slags for nickel flash smelting were measured in the temperature range from 1473 to 1723K by a rotational viscometer. The ratio of Fe to Si02 was fixed at 1.2, calcium and magnesium oxide contents varied in the range from 2 to 8 mass% and 9 to 12 mass%, respectively. The results showed that silicate anions became smaller by increasing CaO content, which results in a decrease of the viscosity of the slag. In the case of MgO addition the viscosity behavior was complicated. At MgO content below II mass%, the viscosity increased with the increase of MgO at all temperatures tested. However, when the MgO content was above II mass%, the viscosity decreased slightly for FenO-MgO-CaO-SiO2 system. At higher MgO contents, low-viscosity slags can be obtained by adding CaO. At a given composition, .the viscosity decreased with increasing temperature. The higher the temperature, the more MgO can be added before saturation. The effect of Fe3O4 on the viscosity was quite significant. The viscosity of slag increased by 300mPa-s at 1573K when Fe3O4 content varied from 3 to 9 mass%. The viscosity values are presented as the functions of temperature and composition. A comparison between FenO-MgO-SiO2 and FenO-MgO-CaO-SiO2 systems is given in this study.

Dentre os mecanismos de desgaste existentes o desgaste por abrasão é responsável por cerca de 50% de todo o desgaste gerado. Alinhado à busca do desenvolvimento de novos mercados para o aço inoxidável, foi desenvolvida uma metodologia, para a medição da taxa de desgaste abrasivo de diferentes aços. Uma politriz foi escolhida para o ensaio devido à possibilidade de controlar a força, tipo de abrasivo, vazão de água, tempo e velocidade de rotação do disco. Para o ensaio foram preparados corpos de prova do aço P410D com dimensões de 40x40mm. Os corpos de prova foram fixados em suportes de baquelite e este conjunto foi acoplado junto à politriz. Após a escolha dos parâmetros ideais para o teste foram realizados testes comparando a taxa de desgaste de diferentes tipos de aços permitindo ranqueá-los de acordo com sua resistência ao desgaste abrasivo.

Spraying medium to achieve an energy-saving and emission reduction for iron ore sintering has been researched, such as spraying natural gas, coke oven gas, oxygen, sintering flue gas and gas from annular cooler. This paper focuses on effect of spraying steam on sintering surface on reduction of NOx and dioxin emissions in practical sintering production in Shougang Jingtang. It can be found that, with the increase of sintering bed spraying steam amount, NOx and dioxin of flue gas showed a decreasing trend. As spraying steam 1 t/h for 550 m2 sintering machine in Jingtang, NOx content decreases 2.6–9.5 mg/Nm3, and dioxin decreases 0.007–0.014 TEG ng/Nm3.

(Visitor) Picklers and galvanizers in and around Johannesburg are encountering an ever-increasing problem in disposing of spent liquors from their hydrochloric acid pickling baths. Particularly troublesome is the zinc-contaminated liquor that is produced as a result of the clean-up of rejects from the galvanizing operation. Because of the volatility of zinc chloride. this liquor presents difficulties when processed in a conventional pyrohydrolysis acid-recovery unit. The paper describes the Metsep Process. developed by the National Institute for Metallurgy and Woodall-Duckham S.A. (Pty) Ltd. which involves the use of continuous ion exchange for the separation of the zinc from the pickle liquor. and the use of liquid-liquid extraction for the conversion of zinc chloride eluate to salable zinc sulphate. A description of laboratory and pilot-plant tests is given. and the approach used in the design of a full-scale continuous- ionexchange plant is outlined.

WHEN George C. Stone, a Director of the Institute, and so well known to our Members in connection with the Institute's many activities was abroad in 1.919, he secured an interesting collection of these coins, which appeared in Zinc, a publication by the New Jersey Zinc Co. Regarding this collection of coin, Mr. Stone says: "During the war, all gold and most of the silver disappeared, making small change very scarce. As the French Government was fully occupied by the war, it allowed various Chambers of Commerce and other bodies to issue money, both paper and coins. Many of the latter were made of zinc, and I secured several while in Paris. We had all heard of the Belgian and German zinc coins, but I imagine few knew how many different kinds there were. The accompanying plates show both sides of those I got. I took all that the dealer had; but he said that there were a number of others in existence. The coins in the bottom line were issued by the Germans in Belgium during the war and all are still in common use. The first two in the next to the bottom line are German. All of the others were issued by Chambers of Commerce or corporations. A few have been nickel plated; these look and wear much better than the others. "Coins" made of pasteboard were also issued by similar bodies, also notes.
