The only previous attempt to use a tunnel boring machine in the rock formations encountered in New York City was unsuccessful. However, technology has been developed since then which made a new attempt a practical proposition. Nine thousand feet each of 8'6" and 11'0" diameter tunnels were driven in Manhattan schist using Jarva TBM's together with 1100 ft. of the smaller diameter driven conventionally in Inwood marble and earth. (1) The selection of tunneling method was largely based on the need to avoid community reaction and hazardous tunneling conditions where the larger diameter tunnel passed beneath residential structures in poor condition in seamy and blocky rock. Experimentation with cutters and cutter mountings indicate that good cutter life and ease of change are available. It was found practical to use unusually large muck cars for an efficient muck disposal system. Conventional tunneling was successfully executed beneath a subway station whose invert was less than seven feet above the crown of the tunnel. Attempts at chemical consolidation and dewatering were unsuccessful in the earth section which was completed under compressed air.

During the past few years, the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been evaluating developments with surface support liners which includes shotcrete and thin spray-on liners (also referred to as sealants, coatings and membranes) from a ground control perspective. The proper selection and use of a surface support material can significantly enhance ground control which may result in a decrease in worker related injuries due to ground falls. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the preliminary findings of a long-term underground study of various types of surface support liners, and to examine installation practices that are critical for an effective liner material application. The underground study utilizes NIOSH’s Lake Lynn Laboratory Experimental Mine to evaluate the long-term performance of several types of shotcrete and thin spray-on liner materials. Liner material performance to date was evaluated on a regular basis over a three year period. Although the study is still ongoing, critical mining practices were identified that may seriously affect the bond of the liner material to the mine roof and rib.

Due to growing concern about the ambient impacts, lignocellulosic fibers are been investigated to replace the synthetic ones in polymer composites The giant bamboo fiber, a relatively unknown lignocellulosic fiber with potential for composite reinforcement, still needs to characterize for possible engineer applications. However the giant bamboo fiber has low adhesion with the polymeric matrix. In order to understand the interaction that occurs between the bamboo fiber and the polymer matrix is necessary to evaluate its physical and chemical characteristics. Therefore, the present work analyzed the giant bamboo fiber by means of Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The spectrum revealed main absorption bands typical of giant bamboo fiber specific molecular interactions.

"Those who submit competing proposals for projects seek to present senior management with complete and fully supported material that will not fail under questioning. Hopefully, misleading notions and omissions will have been minimized and there will have been testing of the assumptions regarding the economic, social and political environments.A capital project evaluation team can do management and itself a service by including a sound approach to the impact of inflation (and its twin problem, interest) on a project and a great disservice with an inappropriate approach to inflation.InflationHandled deftly, inflation can alter a project evaluation to show almost any result the handler desires. It must be a constant source of frustration for design people and cost estimators to spend weeks perfecting the technical aspects of a project in order to minimize costs, only to have all of their efforts set awash in a sea of financial and economic assumptions that submerge all of the detail. In all of this, inflation is perhaps the largest offender, with inflation criteria often being brought to bear at the last minute, almost as an afterthought. Perhaps this tardiness reflects the difficulty of the subject and the belief that senior management will take its own approach to the problems of inflation. Such a belief is unfair to senior management, for it is entitled to not being misled by omission. It is entitled to the full use of the skills of the evaluating team, including reasonable assumptions of the impact of inflation.Working in a consulting context, one has the opportunity to participate in the evaluation of a large number of projects."

Ed¬munds, Anderson and Waring are to be commended for their excellent work in so painstakingly reducing to constants, the variables believed to be associated with these types of stress corrosion. An ammonia stress-cracking apparatus similar in many respects to the one described has been assembled. Certain aspects of its construction may be of interest. Tensile loading of the specimens, which are usually Y8-in. diameter wires, is accomplished by springs acting in compression in compact, portable, tubular assemblies weighing less than 10 lb. The lower end of each assembly contains the test specimen and is passed into the test chamber for exposure to the moist ammoniacal atmosphere. There is considerable convenience in being able to load the specimens in a portable unit, which may be warmed to prevent condensation, and then thrust instantaneously into the test chamber. Spring loading obviates the use of weights, but it has the disadvantage of allowing some relaxation of the load if the specimen elongates during corrosion. The maximum loss in load found so far was 20 per cent. The air supplied to the test chamber is humidified by passing it through thermo¬statically controlled water. The air is dispersed into fine bubbles by being forced through a porous ceramic filter at the bottom of a tank containing about 10 liters of water. As electronic technology continues to evolve there is a growing need to develop processes which recover valuable material from antiquated technology. This need follows from the environmental challenges associated with the recovery of raw materials and fast growing generation of electronic waste. Although present in small quantities in electronic devices, the availability of raw materials such as rare earths and precious metals becomes critical for the production of high tech electronic devices and the development of green technologies (i.e. wind turbines, electric motors, and solar panels). Therefore, the proper recycling and processing of electronic waste presents an opportunity to stabilize the market of critical materials, providing a proper disposal and treatment of a hazardous waste stream. This paper describes the development and techno-economic assessment of a comprehensive process for the recovery of value and critical materials from electronic waste. This hydrometallurgical scheme aims to selectively recover several value streams (base metals, precious metals, and rare earths) present in electronic waste. The economic feasibility for the recovery of rare earths from electronic waste is mostly driven by the efficient recovery of precious metals, such as Au and Pd (ca. 80 % of the total recoverable value). Rare earth elements contained in magnets (speakers, vibrators, and hard disk storage) can be recovered as a mixture of rare earth oxides which can later be reduced to the production of new magnets.

The PACMANUS and Jade deposits are two active hydrothermal fields that are forming massive sulphide deposits at the Pacific rim margin. Both are associated with felsic submarine volcanic rocks and both occur in back-arc settings. However, PACMANUS is associated with almost sediment-free dacites and lies on the crest of a volcanic ridge, whereas Jade occurs in a heavily-sedimented tectonic depression associated with a basement of pumiceous rhyolite. The PACMANUS deposit is richer in Cu and Au, and Jade in Pb. Zinc, Ag, As and Sb contents are similar. Sulfide textures at PACMANUS suggest formation of Cu and Zn sulfides by simultaneous double-diffusion involving inwards-moving seawater mixing with outwards-moving hydrothermal fluid. By contrast, at Jade there is a more complex history of formation where initial growth of barite on the sediment surface, probably associated with microbial activity, formed an impervious cap which trapped higher temperature hydrothermal solutions.

"In order to improve the nickel concentrate thickener operation at Raglan Mine, two pulp deaeration cyclones were installed. These units obtained from Outotec Pty Ltd, also called the FrothBuster®, have been in continuous operation since mid-October 2006. The primary objective of the de-aeration cyclones is to lower the solids content in the thickener overflow by de-aerating the concentrate pulp before it enters the concentrate thickener. This dearated slurry should help decrease the nickel particle losses that report to the thickener overflow because of the flotation effect within the thickener.Optimizing the de-aeration cyclones has been a slow and ongoing process, however, initial testing is encouraging. The latest test results indicate a 50 % reduction (0.070 to 0.035 % solids) in nickel losses to the concentrate thickener overflow resulting in an additional $350,000 in annual revenues.This paper will present an overview of installing the de-aeration cyclones within a limited space, as well as the preliminary commissioning and testing challenges. This paper will also discuss the most recent concentrate thickener operating results since the de-aeration units were installed.INTRODUCTIONThe Xstrata Nickel Raglan Concentrator, located at the northern limit of Quebec’s Nunavik Region has been in production since 1997. In early 2002, the concentrator implemented the Zero Process Water Discharge (ZPWD) project to recycle the process water to decrease fresh water consumption and reduce discharges to the environment. Due to this initiative, the chemistry of the process water changed significantly resulting in flotation concentrate streams, which were very frothy and difficult to manage. This phenomenon has resulted in operational challenges in many areas of the concentrator including slurry pumping, flow measurement and concentrate thickening.In October 2005, the Raglan Mine underwent a conversion from an AG mill to a SAG mill operation in order to increase throughput and to optimize key process areas. As part of this project, the first two North American pulp de-aeration (FrothBuster®) units from Outotec were installed to improve the operation of the concentrate thickener. The primary objective of the deaeration technology was to lower the solids content in the thickener overflow by de-aerating the concentrate thickener feed pulp. This in turn was to reduce the froth, which accumulates on the thickener surface, and more importantly reduce valuable nickel losses to the thickener overflow because of the flotation effect within the thickener."

Optimization of workflows and intelligent stock management; Slab stacking improvement by automated transport orders; and System automatically registers any slab movements even in manual operation. Case story: Steel producer ArcelorMittal Eisenhüttenstadt GmbH in Germany uses Primetals Technologie’s new stock yard logistics system in its finishing department. An exact image of its slab storage at any times is given by the warehouse logistics system to the company. It not only enhances the composition of the stacks of slabs, but also automates recording of manual restacking operations. Therefore the solution improves workflows and simplifies stock control. Cycle times have also been reduced due to the fact that the slabs can be charged to reheating furnaces ahead of the rolling mill due to less restacking operations within the slab storage. The expandable, modular system is based on the Siemens Simatic IT and Primetals Technologies’ IT4METALS Logistics product platform. It provides a large number of organizational and commercial features in the form of sophisticated graphics and tabular evaluations. For example, it can show how many crane movements have been made per shift for any category of slab, so that the time and cost for each operation can be calculated accurately.

To evaluate the potential for dust reduction, during blasthole drilling, of water or foam applied directly into the drill hole. Approach The Bureau of Mines tested a through-the-drill-steel water and foam injection technique in two noncoal mines to evaluate the method's potential for greater dust reduction. The tests were performed by drilling a series of blastholes for an entire face (a 90 minute time-period). For the first 45 minutes of drilling, foam or water was applied through the drill steel. Blowing ventilation was supplied to the entry about 50 feet from the face. The dust concentration measurements were made by a Real-Time Aerosol Monitor (RAM-I), and the data were read out on a strip chart recorder. The evaluation test results showed that the water or foam injection technique, when used on localized dust sources, can be an extremely effective dust control method. Small amounts of water used in this method have also allowed it flexibility to be used in water-soluble ores such as salt, gypsum, anhydrite, and trona. How The System Works Water or foam is mixed with compressed air (approximately 100-120 psi) with suitable metering systems and forced through the drill steel into the blast hole at the point of dust generation. Because the water or foam is applied at the source, minimal quantities of liquid are needed (0.2 to 0.6 gpm). These low flowrates are sufficient to just moisten the dust emerging from the blast hole, thus eliminating a major source of airborne dust. The wet drilling procedure also eliminates a second source of dust. With dry drilling, the dust from the blast hole falls to the floor. Since this can be a 15-ft drop or more, the impact can send the dust billowing up from the floor, adding to the airborne dust. With wet drilling, the moistened dust merely dribbles down the face.

In considering the possibilities and costs of discovering minerals by exploration. mineral occurrences may be classified roughly according to the size of the target they offer to the various methods that have been used to search them out. This classification is advantageous because the methods of search which might be expected to give results in one case may be totally inapplicable in others. Mineral deposits for the most part have been found in groups, or districts, in which the individual deposits occur under the same general geological conditions and usually contain more or less the same metals. There are, also, what are apparently isolated de- posits, although if the truth were fully known many of these probably would not be isolated. These districts, such as the Belgian Congo copper fields, the California Mother Lode, and the Linares lead district of Spain, form the first division of my classification. The second division is formed of the individual deposits of these districts, for example, Kambove mine in the Congo, the Kennedy-Argonaut vein in California, and the Cruz vein at Linares. Structures obtained on freezing of several hypo-and hypereutectic Al-Cu alloys over a range of solidification rates have been examined. Dendrite spacing, L, increases linearly with solute concentration and with the square root of the inverse freezing rate. The relationship for hypoeutectic alloys is: where rate of change of fraction solid with time, is freezing rate, C is solute concentration, (pct Cu)=1. Mass transport in inter dendritic liquid during solidification is analyzed; the experimental observations suggest maximum concentration differences and constitutional supercooling in the inter dendritic liquid increase with an increase in the solute concentration. The dendrite morphology changes with freezing rate and alloy composition. The dendrites of the a phase are parallel, uniformly spaced plates with slow freezing and rods with rapid freezing. Nonor-thogonal side branching has been observed in phases with cubic and tetragonal structures. Side branches in a dendrites are orthogonal with slow freezing and at 60 deg with rapid freezing. Formation of second-phase envelopes around the Primary phase is also discussed. DENDRITIC structure is characteristic of many types of phase transformation. The most extensively studied so far has been solidification of liquid solutions. chalmersl and coworkers have interpreted the formation of dendrites in terms of the breakdown of a planar interface. Most of the work done concerns itself with the development of an instability at the interface. Little theoretical work has been done quantitatively to relate the parameters of dendritic structure to mass transport in the liquid phase. A few empirical relations based on the experimental2'3 observations exist in the literature. Several workers2 including Brown and Adams1 have studied dendrite spacing in A1-Cu system as a function of solidification variables. In most cases, dendrite spacing has been found to increase linearly with the square root of some parameter proportional to the freezing time. The effect of solute concentration is not clear; some workers report the dendrite spacing increases with solute concentration4 whereas others report vice versa.''' ~ohatgi' has observed an increase in the spacing between ice dendrites with an increase in solute concentration in water. Tiller has also suggested that dendrite spacing should increase with solute concentration. In the present work dendrite spacing and morphology have been examined as a function of solute concentration and freezing rate. The freezing rate is defined as the fraction of liquid solidified per unit time, dfs/dß?, where f, is the fraction solid and 8 the time. The fastest freezing rate studied was 4550 times the slowest freezing rate. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS It is of interest to analyze the concentration distribution in the liquid phase between growing dendrites during solidification, Fig. 1. Since this distribution is a direct consequence of the rejection of solute by the growing solid, a diffusional process, the concentration gradients increase with the freezing rate. However, when solidification rate is the only variable in a series of experiments, the interdendritic liquid regions become smaller (i.e., the dendrites become more closely spaced) with an increase in freezing rate. The main purpose of the analytical treatment of interdendritic liquid diffusion will be to reveal a tendency for dendrite spacing to decrease with increasing solidification rate in just such a way that the maximum concentration differences developed in the liquid phase are remarkably independent of freezing rate. Two rather different analyses are set forth, one pertaining to the one-dimensional diffusion which obtains in the interdendritic liquid between parallel plate-shaped dendrites, and the other to the cylindrically symmetrical diffusion around rod-shaped dendrites during early stages of solidification. The results of the two analyses are quantitatively similar, correlating dendrite spacing, maximum concentration difference, and freezing rate. First consider the simpler one-dimensional case. Two parallel plate-shaped dendrites are separated by a distance, L, between centers, Fig. 1. Solidification takes place by the thickening of these plates, with solute being rejected into the liquid. It is assumed there is no diffusion in the solid. This thickening process is slow enough and the dendrite spacing small enough that the concentration differences which develop, although interesting and important, are very small (an important assumption which is verified ex-

Within recent years portable seismic refraction units have found their place in the industry for shallow investigations, Completely portable, relatively inexpensive and of proven accuracy, the portable refraction seismograph is an electronic tool in an electronic age. The age of electronic instrumentation has seen the development of seismic reflection and refraction equipment for deep exploration, especially in the petroleum industry. Large, expensive units, normally truck-mounted and utilizing explosives, are being used successfully for this type of sub- surface investigation. The portable seismograph utilizes the same theory for shallow work as that applied to deep refraction seismology.

As technology and economic conditions allow mines to operate at ever greater depths, increasing demands are placed on the environmental engineer to adjust the capacity of the installed mine . - refrigeration systems. At the same time the engineer must satisfy the changing legislation, which demands that developments are carried out in as an energy efficient and environmentally accept- able manner. Following the trends outlined above, this paper is written to give an overview of the current and potential future refrigeration technology available to the mining industry. The effects that may be produced by the adoption in mining applications of the new generation of 'green' refrigerants are examined both at the design stage and when considering the viability of retrofitting existing systems so that they comply with the Montreal Protocol. An introduction to the concept of Total Energy Warming Impact (TEWI) is provided, with an explanation of its use in optimising system design and performance, and its incorporation as part of an environmental audit strategy. The paper concludes with a discussion of innovative refrigeration techniques and the possible future developments in legislation.

The overburden responses in gently inclined orebody mining are different from those in horizontal orebody affected by the orebody dip angle. In particular, the mining-induced stress presents asymmetrical distribution characteristics spatially, resulting in stress concentration and large-scale pressure relief phenomenon in the surrounding rock. As a result, frequent ground pressure disasters such as roof collapse and barrier splitting occur frequently. Moreover, the ground pressure evolution law and the interaction between stopes in multistope mining are complex. The effective ground pressure control measures cannot be taken due to unclear understanding of the evolution of stress and displacement fields, justifying the investigation of the distribution and evolution of underground pressure for safe and efficient mining.

The Pittsburgh seam is the most extensively mined coal bed in the Appalachian Basin. Unlike most other prominent coal seams, the Pittsburgh seam typically includes a sequence of immediate roof coals and intervening rock binders (or ?draw slate?), most of which are within mineable horizons. Furthermore, unlike the main bench, the thickness of the overlying roof coals and their intervening rock binders can vary significantly. For instance, in southwestern Pennsylvania, the Pittsburgh seam main bench typically ranges from about 5.0 to 6.0 feet thick with minimal variation over short distances. On the other hand, the Pittsburgh seam roof coals and immediate roof binder typically range from a few inches to several feet, and in certain geologic settings can vary significantly over short distances. Additionally, in some locations, very thick draw slate can totally replace the roof coals. Since the draw slate, which typically consists of claystone or clayladen shale, is relatively weak, the presence of thick and variable draw slate in the roof and rib can significantly affect mine safety and productivity. This paper presents the adverse effect of thick draw slate on a 1500-foot-wide longwall face in a southwestern Pennsylvania coal mine. Mapping of the thick draw slate, numerical models which illustrate stress distribution and failure associated with thick draw slate, and operational adjustments instituted to mitigate the negative impact of thick draw slate will be discussed in detail.

"Advances in our knowledge of the petrochemical attributes of deposit environments and of the character and extent of hydrothermal systems associated with certain deposit types has resulted in increased application of lithogeochemistry to exploration programs. Lithogeochemistry can be used to vector an exploration program toward an area of high potential through the use of a series of collapsing scales of analysis from a tectonic subprovince down to a particular stratigraphic segment. In the case of volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) deposits this involves the recognition ofsuitable volcanic domains, and the identification of subvolcanic intrusions and cogenetic felsic extrusive complexes. The recognition of chemical vectors within regional-scale alteration zones and associated chemical sedimentary rocks allows the geologist to identify the stratigraphic units with the most potential for hosting a base metal deposit.An integrated lithogeochemical program requires the judicious use of major, trace and rare-earth element and isotopic analysis. Standard discriminant plots may be employed to identify suitable tectonic and lithologic environments. Analysis of the chemical and mineralogical variations in broad-scale, semi-comfortable alteration zones provides a useful set of vectors to VMS mineralization. These may include contouring raw data, element ratios on XY plots, normalizing data against known rock values, or calculating mass changes in alteration zones."

This paper is based on the experiences, over many years, of numerous authors in the South African mining industry and of the hot dip galvanizing process and its application as a corrosion protection system. The paper sets out the extensive development, financial resources and stringent operating requirements of the South African mining industry. After many years of research and operational experiences, hot dip galvanizing and, when necessary, duplex systems, have been found to meet the demanding requirements of this particular industry. The paper sets out the requirements from the standpoint of corrosion criteria and is followed with a case where the corrosion protection properties of hot dip galvanizing are demonstrated. This case history traces the early investigation of the expected corrosive conditions in a new mining operation and concludes with two follow-up visits to the mine in order to examine actual performance of the corrosion protection system after ten years in service.

"When coal pillar bursts occur, they involve the sudden expulsion of coal and rock into the mine opening. These events occur when relatively high stresses in a coal pillar, which serve as support in underground workings, exceed the critical capability of the pillar. This causes the pillar to rupture without warning. A cleating is a type of naturally occurring joint system unique to coal seams. However, cleatings are pervasive throughout the coal seam and are much more tightly spaced than joints occurring in other rock types. In this study, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) investigated 84 coal samples obtained from a Utah coal mine by conducting both unconfined and triaxial compressive tests in order to examine the response to stress as a function of both confinement and orientation between cleat and loading direction. The results of the study show that the confining pressure dictated not only the peak compressive strength but also the brittleness as a function of the major-to-minor principal stress ratio. The spalling limit of the coal estimated by the s-shaped brittle failure criterion appears to be very dependent on the angle between the cleat and the loading direction, particularly at lower confinement.INTRODUCTIONCoal pillar bursts, or bumps, remain a most critical safety concern in underground coal mining, despite significant advancements in engineering controls. As shown in Figure 1, between 1983 and 2014, there were nearly 400 cases of reportable dynamic failure accidents in coal and nonmetal mines, resulting in 20 fatalities, 155 lost-time accidents, and an estimated 48,000 lost man hours (MSHA, 2015). These types of events have been documented for well over 100 years within the American underground coal mining industry. During this time, mining practices and support technologies have evolved considerably, resulting in an overall decrease in the rate of dynamic failure-related injuries and fatalities. Although techniques and practices of mining are highly advanced, coal pillar bursts, or bumps, continue to occur (Mark and Gauna, 2015). If coal is expected to fail in a brittle manner, behavior changes associated with relatively low tensile strength, such as the transition from tensile to shear failure, have to be considered and reflected in the adopted failure criteria. Rock failure in tension takes place at low confinement around excavations due to tensile failure in heterogeneous rocks (Diederichs, 2007). The prospect of tensile-dominant brittle failure diminishes as the confinement increases away from the excavation boundary. Therefore, it is expected that the transition from tensile to shear mode in the failure mechanism occurs as the confinement level changes and conditions for tensile failure are prevented or strongly diminished. In addition, many uncertainties remain because of the highly anisotropic characteristics of coal seams associated with geologic structure and the mining-induced spatial redistribution of stress in coal pillars. Thus, to prevent fatalities in underground coal mining, continuous effort is required to better understand the catastrophic failure mechanisms in coal mines."
