The Coeur d'Alene mining district in northern Idaho, USA is the second largest producer of silver in the world. Mesothermal silver-lead-zinc veins occur in the metasedimentary rocks of the Belt Supergroup with five main types of associated hydrothermal alteration: 1) feldspar destruction, 2) hydrothermal bleaching, 3) carbonatisation, 4) sulfidation, and 5) silicification. Hydrothermal bleaching is characterised by hematite destruction with associated siderite and quartz veins and veinlets, coarse euhedral pyrite and magnetite. Bleached zones envelop both mineralised and barren veins and extend for metres to tens of metres into the wall rocks. Carbonatisation consists of addition of siderite, which occurs as veins, veinlets, stockwork, irregular blebs or spots, and coarsely disseminated grains, depending on the relative distance from the main vein structure. Siderite envelops nearly all mineralised veins, relates to all other alteration types and extends from several metres to tens of metres into the wall rocks. Pyrite and galena alteration dominate sulfidation and are associated with some mineralised veins. Pyrite alteration strongly correlates with siderite alteration and exists in three main forms: a) very fine-grained pyrite flooding, which can extend for metres to tens of metres into wall rocks; b) coarse-grained, euhedral pyrite, which is sporadic and associated with the redox boundary in hydrothermally bleached zones; and c) small isolated zones (6 - 15 cm) of medium-grained, subhedral to euhedral pyrite associated with pervasive siderite alteration. Where present, disseminated galena extends for metres to tens of metres into the wall rocks. Silicification is characterised by veins, veinlets, stringers, irregular patches and variable hardness in siltites and commonly appears in association with hydrothermal bleaching and siderite alteration. Although related to mineralisation, silicification is sporadic and in most places a clear envelope around mineralised veins cannot be identified.

Effective and sustained corporate energy management programs are becoming a necessity for energy users as electricity deregulation laws are enacted on a state-by-state basis across the country and environmental regulations pertaining to emissions become more prevalent. The “Total Energy Asset Management” (TEAM) approach has been developed to assist energy end users with the development and implementation of corporate energy management programs designed to reduce energy risks and increase energy cost savings. This paper highlights the ways in which this approach can be applied to the mining industry while minimizing initial program implementation costs and increasing potential program benefits. Nearly the entire mining industry has become very focused on identifying opportunities to reduce costs per unit of yield. The industry as a whole has increasingly faced pricing pressures in large part due to the effects of global competition. The result of international marketplace participation and the emergence of higher efficiency recovery techniques have resulted in flat or even decreased prices for mining products. Thus, opportunities to reduce costs are actually opportunities to gain a competitive edge over similar mining operations. Due to the energy-intensive nature of many mining operations, the costs associated with energy are often a substantial percentage of operating costs. Therefore, it becomes very important to develop the corporate mentality that energy is an asset whose use should be optimized globally. In addition to the cost benefits of the TEAM approach, other benefits may occur such as reductions in facility greenhouse gas emissions.

O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do tempo de recozimento na resistência à corrosão do aço inoxidável duplex UNS S32205 laminado a frio. Quando o aço duplex é submetido a deformações intensas, a austenita transforma-se parcialmente em martensita, elevando a resistência mecânica do aço. Já quando é feito o recozimento essa transformação é revertida, ou seja, a martensita se transforma em austenita. Porém, esses aços apresentam forte tendência à formação de fases secundárias quando expostos a determinadas temperaturas por certo intervalo de tempo, que levam à deterioração das propriedades mecânicas e corrosivas dos mesmos. O aço estudado foi submetido à laminação a frio até 60% de redução da espessura, e posteriormente recozido a 850°C, temperatura na qual a cinética de precipitação de fases é máxima, nos tempos de 300, 600, 1800 e 86400 segundos. Para a análise microestrutural foram utilizadas as técnicas de microscopia óptica, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e a difração de raios-X. A resistência à corrosão foi estudada por meio da técnica de impedância eletroquímica (EIE), utilizando solução de NaCl 3,5% à temperatura ambiente. O aumento do tempo de recozimento aumentou a precipitação das fases secundárias, o que leva ao aumento de regiões empobrecidas em Cr e Mo. Com o aumento do tempo de recozimento, essas regiões são parcialmente recuperadas pela difusão desses elementos, melhorando a resistência à corrosão.

IN an earlier series of studies on 18-8 stainless steel at 600°, 700°, and 800°C.1 one pretreatment was used throughout; viz., 15 min. in hydrogen at 950°C., followed by an air quench. Several manufacturers of this alloy since have expressed doubt as to the suitability of the temperature employed, recommending instead the more customary Strauss treatment as promising superior results. In this subsequent investigation on the effects of the temperature of pretreatment several interesting points have arisen, which are described in this paper. Previous work on our equipment had shown a marked difference between alloys of "similar chemical composition" that had been manu-factured by different companies. Accordingly, one mill-bar length was selected from which to prepare all specimens. It could then be assumed that any marked differences in creep characteristics would be due to effects resulting from variations in the pretreatment of the alloy. The material was furnished by the Allegheny-Ludlum Steel Co. in the form of 5/16-in, dia. rod, finished by air cooling from a mill anneal at 1950°F. (1066°C.). It was analyzed only for the elements shown: carbon, 0,07 per cent; chromium, 18.73; nickel, 9.46; manganese, 0.40. Three pretreating temperatures were chosen, the specimens being held for 15 min. in hydrogen at either: (1) 1150°C., to conform to the recom-mended Strauss treatment; (2) 950°C., to compare with the results of previous tests; or (3) 750°C., to initiate precipitation of carbides in the material before testing. As the test cross sections were only 1/8 -in. dia., air cooling followed the annealing treatment. These treatments per-mitted two direct comparisons: (1) between the 1150° and 950°C. treat-ments to indicate the effect of grain size when all carbides were probably in solution at the start of the test; and (2) between the 950° and 750°C. treatments to indicate the effect of carbide "nucleation" for similar grain sizes.

The Saskatchewan industry has the advantages of an ore body of a size and consistency unmatched anywhere else in the world, and large, efficient mines with production costs that compare favourably with those in other countries. On the minus side, Saskatchewan is remote from most major markets, and producers face a distribution challenge to reach the offshore markets which is the main focus of this presentation. One of the characteristics of the world potash business is that all of the major sources of production are located in the developed areas of the world, while there is no significant production in any of the highly populated developing countries. The major potash producers are located in Canada and the United States, in West Germany, France, Spain and the U.K., in Russia and East Germany, and in Israel and Jordan. There is currently no significant production in any of the countries in Asia (with the exception of Jordan where a plant is currently in the start-up phase), Africa, Latin America or Oceania, and all of these areas must, therefore, import a11 of their potash requirements from the producing countries.

C.Extensive surface float and outcrops of sillimanite schist on these properties appeared to justify drilling, which did not prove satisfactory, however, owing to the spotty occurrence of the schist bodies and the poor core recovery in the decomposed schist.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The farm house on the property is 0.4 mile north on this road. The sillimanite outcrop is in a field approximately 1,200 feet east of the farm house. The Barber property is about 2 miles north along the unsurfaced road that passes the Alexander property."

The identification and quantification of incipient overload conditions in mills have recently been found to be very significant in the design of tumbling grinding mills. To investigate these phenomena, a series of experiments was conducted in a Plexiglas mill operated in both dry and wet modes. For on-stream measurement of the mill charge weight, volumetric filling, dynamic angle of repose, and mill power, an electronic system was developed. The mill was filled to various levels with 19.1-mm (3/4-in.) ceramic balls as grinding media. As feed material, grindable limestone or 3.2-mm (1/8-in.) nongrinding ceramic balls were fed at various steady-state rates to determine the incipient overload conditions. The prediction of overload has apparently been reduced to predicting the feed rate that results in 50% mill filling.

IN 1923 a Western mining company was experimenting with the device of an inventor designed to locate buried ores by radio. Because the progress was slow and the results were confusing, the company began to doubt the usefulness of the method and invited me to review the whole question of the application of physics to ore detection. I was fortunate in securing the cooperation of several physicists who had worked with me during the war on the problem of submarine detection. This group has been increased and has been studying the problem of physical exploration for ores since that time. It was evident that the problem is a big one, with many angles of approach. Its general features may be set down, in rough outline, as follows: The soils, rocks and ores hidden beneath the surface differ, one from another in many respects. These differences may be made to furnish a clew for the physicists working from the surface. To bring these differences into action the physicist creates some kind of an effect, which penetrates into the ground and is distorted and, reflected when it meets boundaries between different sorts of underground structure. In other words, he sends a message down, and the rocks and ore send back signals in, reply. In picturing this process, we should not regard the ground as dense and impenetrable. The kind of messages used pass through the earth about as readily as a sound wave travels the air. If, then, the fundamental procedure is to shout down questions in the hope that an orebody will hear and answer back to us, it is clear that a large part of the expert's study must relate to the kind of questions best suited to the temperament and intelligence of orebodies. It will be easier for the ore to, reply to some of our questions than to others, and it is for us to find the right questions. In certain cases, we are-spared the necessity of using a messenger, because nature has already provided one. For example, we already have a terrestrial magnetic field which auto-matically and continually conveys messages from underneath. We also have available the earth's gravitational field which furnishes us

To stay competitive in an open market, mineral industries have to optimise their processes, lower their production costs and improve the commercial value of their products. Up to a recent past, they were impaired in this attempt by a lack of adequate devices allowing reliable on-line and real-time process monitoring (detection or measurement). Process monitoring for process control and the product characterisation for quality control are quite different tasks. Planners and researchers should be fully aware of this when evaluating or developing monitoring equipment for on-line process control. This paper will comment on some aspects of sensor specifications, during the design and the evaluation steps, related to sampling, measurement (accuracy, sensitivity, delay and correlation to the process) and suitability to the exploitation environment. Examples of R&D projects promoted by COREM for various industrial applications will be presented.

When admitted as a territory in 1850. Utah included all the area from the east line of California to the summit of the Rocky Mountains between the 37th and 42nd parallels, which embraced practically all of the present state of Nevada, all of western Colorado, part of Idaho and part of Wyoming, in addition to the present area of Utah.

The mining law of May 16, 1884, is still the basic mining legislation in Smeden. To satisfy a demand for a revision of the entire mining law, special commissions have been at work for a number of years; but present indications are that the work will require several more years for its completion. The changes contemplated would affect mainly the relations between the nine operator and the landemer, as the present law, according to general opinion, tends unduly to jeopardize the landowner's right in favor of the miner. The socialist party desires additional changes, especially in the direction of giving more direct control of the industry to the State, a control that it now seems to exercise through individual agreements with mining companies. Its control of the Lapland iron mines comes through its sharing the ownership with the Luossavaara-iirunavaara Altb. In this instance, the Government should be Considered as a private commercial body, since the agreement with the company

Questões socioambientais têm maximizado a permuta entre o uso de materiais sintéticos para o uso de materiais naturais. A fibra de fique disposta no presente trabalho na forma de tecido, extraída do folha da planta do fique (Furcraea Andina) demonstra grande potencialidade como reforço de compósito polimérico. Nos corpos de prova para os ensaios, as camadas de tecido foram misturadas à resina epoxídica DGEBA/TETA e justapostas sob pressão em um molde retangular metálico à temperatura ambiente por 24 horas. A quantidade de tecido de fique nos corpos de prova gerados, foram de até 5 camadas, cortados a partir das dimensões matriciais, seguindo a norma ASTM D256. Testados e após analisados por microscopia de varredura eletrônica (MEV). Pode-se notar o aumento significante da resistência ao impacto de acordo com o crescimento numérico de camadas fibrosas que reforçaram o compósito. Tal performance pode ser associada ao mecanismo de fratura, gerada da interação entre o tecido de fique e a matriz.

The Crucible mine in Pennsylvania, operating on Pittsburgh seam coal, is rated at 5000 tpd. The washing plant, built in 1943, is rated at about 400 tph, using hydroseparator boxes to wash the coarse coal (4 x 5/16 in.) and hydrotator units for the fine coal (5/16 x 0). It is generally acknowledged that gravity concentration equipment cannot be used efficiently to bene-ficiate coal finer than about 65 mesh. Before the present flotation circuit was installed, Crucible recovered its fine coal slurry, predominantly —24 mesh material, by passing it through a battery of five 14-in. and one hundred and ten 3-in. Hey1 & Patterson cyclones in parallel with a 75-ft Dorr thickener. About two thirds went to the cyclones and one third to the thickener. Underflows from cyclones and thickener were filtered, respectively, in one 12-disk Eimco and two 4-disk Oliver filters fitted with stainless steel cloth. The resulting cakes were added to the coarse metallurgical coal. The filtrates, overflow from the 3-in. cyclones, and thickener overflow were recycled to the coarse coal plant. The three major problems encountered in this system became acute when the mine switched from track-mounted machinery to the more economical off-track equipment. The quality and uniformity of product declined, too much slime accumulated in the circuit, and waste pond disposal became highly impracticable. Lowering of Quality and Uniformity: Since the filter cake was not beneficiated in any way, addition of this material, which contained about 18 pct ash. would certainly lower the quality of metallurgical coal. Difficulties of handling the high-ash, high-moisture cake were compounded by the lack of adequate blending facilities at the mine, making it impossible to maintain uniform feed for the coke ovens. For a two-month test period, to verify the source of trouble, all filter cake was excluded from the metallurgical coal. The excluded filter cake was stocked in the yard. Slime Buildup: The moisture retained in the coarse coal products and the filter cake provided daily the only means of slime bleed from the circuit. As this bleed was not enough to offset the incoming fines in the raw coal feed, there was excessive buildup of slimes. To operate at all, it was necessary to purge the system each weekend by pumping all the solids from the thickener to a waste pond. The slimes built up during the week progressively increased the apparent viscosity and density of the circulating plant water, so that hydroseparators and hydrotator units had to be constantly adjusted. Uniformity, yield, and quality of the metallurgical coal suffered in consequence, and the filter cake ash and moisture contents increased from Monday to Friday. Limited Waste Disposal: Location of the plant does not permit unlimited waste pond area. Maintenance of a waste pond for the purpose of emptying the thickener during weekends became a costly burden that could not be tolerated. HOW THE PROBLEMS WERE SOLVED The flowsheet (Fig. 1) chosen to overcome these difficulties is considered the one most economical to install and operate. For the year 1934, there were 382 oi1 wells completed for a total initial of 146,965 bbl. Fifty-three wells were deepened for a total increase of 8363 bbl., bringing the total volume of new oil to 155,328 bbl. As of Jan. 1, 1934, the daily potential of the field as determined by the Texas Railroad Commission was 159,740 bbl. Of this amount 26,429 bbl. is "marginal oil," and 2682 bbl. is exempt on account of water. In December, 1934, the daily potential was established by the Railroad Commission as being 297,501 bbl. with a daily allowable of 56,800 bbl. Of this amount 31,993 bbl. is "marginal oil," and 2183 bbl. is exempt on account of water. There has been no field-wide test made during the year, and as a result the rated potential of the field is in all probability much higher than the actual potential. As each new well comes in, a five-day test is made under the supervision of the Railroad Commission. The potential thus established is added to the field potential and shares its pro rata part of the market outlet, which is the allowable production, no allowance

J. D. Meakin (The Franklin Institute Laboratories)— In a recent paper Garofalo12 has shown that a number of experimental creep results can be represented by the empirical relation In this expression ? is the steady creep rate, s is the applied stress, and A is a constant at a given temperature; a and n are adjustable parameters. Garofalo has shown that Expression [6] approximates to a power function at low stresses and a simple exponential function at high stresses. Among the data used by Garofalo are the results we published for creep of copper." For these results we found that the best correlation was an exponential law with different parameters in the low-and high-stress region, respectively. That is, i = A exp qs where A and q have different values above and below a critical stress a,. In Ref. 13 are listed a variety of observations which support the proposal that different mechanisms are operative at stresses above and below a,, and it is not felt appropriate to repeat those observations here. The purpose of this note is to demonstrate that, although the representation used by Garofalo does fit the experimental data very well, this fit cannot be used to conclude that only one mechanism is rate-controlling. The argument is best made graphically and is illustrated in Fig. 9. The continuous curves 2 and 3 represent pairs of simple exponential functions which intersect at i = 10-5. The curve 2 closely resembles the copper results in that a change of slope of 2:1 occurs at i = 10-5; the two functions shown are in fact: e = 10-7 exp (1.150) and ? = 10-6&apos; exp (0.576s) For purposes of comparison, curve 3 represents two exponential functions with a change of exponent of 3:1 and curve 1 has the exponent 1.150 throughout. It is quite clear that a satisfactory straight-line fit is obtained on a Garofalo plot for all three curves. The curves represent processes which have either a single stress exponent or two ex- ponents in a ratio as high as 3:l. It must, therefore, be concluded that the ability to obtain a linear dependence between log i and log (sinh cyo) cannot be taken as evidence for a single activated process. In fact, to some extent the way the experimental points quoted by Garofalo lie about a best fit straight line on the log (sinh as) plot indicates that two processes are indeed occurring. This is seen in Figs. 7(c) and 8(c) of Ref. 12 where it is particularly evident that the experimental points deviate from the straight line in a manner similar to curves 2 and 3 of Fig. 9. It is, of course, recognized that the generally used exponential form is an approximation to the hyperbolic sine function which is not valid for exponents of less than 1.2, e.g., qs < 1.2. Coal production in the United States increased in2004 by 36 Mt (39.7 million st) to end the year at 1 Gt(1.11 billion st), according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). This was a 3.7-percent in-crease from 2003’s 971.6 Mt (1.07 billion st) (Table 1).(All percentage change calculations are done at the short-tons level.) Although U.S. coal consumption rose in 2004, not all coal-consuming sectors had increased consumption for the year. Coal consumption increased in the electric power sectors by 1 percent and declined slightly in the other industrial sector, while coking coal consumption dropped by 2.4 percent. U.S. coal exports rose for the second consecutive year, while coal imports again increased to record levels. Coal stocks declined during the year, as electric generators used their stockpiles to helpmeet increased demands and missed shipments. Coal producers used their stockpiles to supplement their production levels.

The Outotec® Ausmelt Top Submerged Lance (TSL) Process has achieved widespread commercial acceptance over the past 40 years for the processing of copper, nickel, lead, tin, zinc and precious metal bearing feeds. The continual development and evolution of the technology during this period has resulted in a more intense smelting process with higher energy efficiency and lower operating costs. More recently, considerable effort has been invested in decarbonisation of the process through improvements such as increased oxygen usage, dry feed injection and use of low-carbon auxiliary fuels. This paper covers a number of these recent advances to the technology and highlights their impacts on energy consumption and CO2 emissions for a range of non-ferrous smelting flowsheets. INTRODUCTION Relentless demand for improvements in the profitability, safety and environmental performance of non-ferrous smelting plants has driven a continual development and evolution of processing technologies in this industry. In response to these demands, a number of bath smelting technologies have emerged over the past 40 years and have been implemented for the treatment of primary and secondary feedstocks. The Outotec® Ausmelt Top Submerged Lance (TSL) Process (henceforth Ausmelt Process) is one such bath smelting technology which has been widely adopted in a large number of greenfield projects and brownfield plant modernisations (Wood & Hughes, 2016). Emissions of CO2 from the production of non-ferrous metals represent approximately 4-5% of global totals (Rankin, 2012), comparable with the almost 10% attributed to iron and steel production. Despite significant improvements in the energy efficiency of modern smelting technologies (Coursol, Mackey, Kapusta & Cardona Valencia, 2015), primarily through increased oxygen usage, further innovation and development is still required to address their reliance on fossil fuels such as coke and coal.
