Building aggregates, basic materials for the construction industry, must be produced according to socio-economic and environmental sustainability principles, i.e. the three fundamental components of Sustainable Development. On this subject, an introductory discussion about the interpretation of these concepts in the field of mineral production and construction industry is first presented. As for the socio-economic aspect, aggregates are then illustrated as being essential resources for the development of the society, underlying that it is possible to understand their fundamental socio-economic role only through the analysis of the whole product life cycle, from production to end use and beyond. The same has to be done on the environmental side to assess the environmental impacts of aggregates: one should look for, not in the quarry phase only, but also in all the downstream activities of the construction process, including the use phase and beyond. Based on this approach, in the second part of the paper, the results of some investigations focused on eco-profiles of building aggregates, gathered through the application of LCA methodology are presented and discussed. In such a context, strengths and weaknesses of LCA indicators will be discussed, as well.

Retreat mining, using yielding steel friction props, over a 7-year period has been successful at a uranium mine operated by Hecla Mining Co. in southeast Utah. The support system allows good roof control, maximum profit, complete extraction, and good ventilation. Unusual subsidence observations were made in that some of the surface was raised rather than lowered. Longwall mining, commonly practiced in European coal mines, has a potential of broader application because of mechanization possibilities and better roof control and ventilation at greater depths. The Radon mine was one of the first American metal mines to use yielding steel props for supporting the relaxed core of the pressure arch which is induced by retreating longwall mining. Full caving was induced. After more than 7 years of stoping experience, the method has proved very satisfactory for the conditions encountered. The mine and method have been described in references listed in the bibliography. U.S. Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8004 by Wilbert Dare and Philip Lindstrom gives the most information. Stoping experience at this mine indicates that there are many advantages to be gained by using yielding supports; such as in safety, timber cost, roof control, ventilation, ore dilution, and low cost per pound of metal produced. Subsidence measurements show that the surface will rise rather than slump in some areas over the mine. This appears to be an unusual observation and is presented as a new development in subsidence studies. The Radon mine is located 35 miles southeast of Moab, Utah in the north end of the Big Indian mining district in San Juan County. Hecla Mining Co. operated the mine from early 1955 to early 1964 through an operating agreement with Federal Resources, Inc. Development consisted of a 3-compartment, 690-ft shaft, 4 main levels driven on the ore horizon and a haulage level below the ore. Evaluation of physical and economic factors showed that this flat-dipping ore occurrence could be mined by a low-cost coal mining method. The value of the deposit was high and unusual premiums were possible by clean mining. Monitoring conveyance position and wire rope load directly from the skip or cage top offers several significant safety and production advantages. The Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed a shaft conveyance monitoring system (SCMS). This system consists of position and guide-displacement sensors, a maintenance-free battery power supply and a new sensor, which is mounted on the wire rope with a Crosby Clip, to measure hoist-rope tension. A radio data link transmits sensor output to the hoistroom. A state-of-the-art automated hoisting test facility was also constructed to test the concept in a controlled laboratory setting. Field tests in full-size shafts are now underway.

The Mather Mine property is composed of a 5.2 sq km (2 sq mile) area within the Cities of Ishpeming and Negaunee which are located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Production in this mine started in 1943; it ran continuously until its closing in 1979, having produced slightly over 55 million tons of iron ore. This mine was a joint venture between several steel companies and The Cleveland- Cliffs Iron Company (CCI), with CCI being the fee holder and operator. For the first 17 years of operation, the ore was shipped in its natural state directly from the mine to the steel mill. By 1960, iron ore pellets were on the market and they proved so superior to the natural soft Mather ore that the latter became difficult to sell except for the coarser portions. It was decided to develop a pelletizing process for the Mather ore, and this was accomplished by 1965 when the first Mather pellets were produced. From this date, all but the coarse fraction of the Mather ore was shipped as pellets. The geological setting is that of a large east-west trending synclinorium which plunges to the west. The lowest member of this trough-like structure is, for the most part, a quartzite-like graywacke, the upper 20 m of which grades into a softer, fine grained slate. Lying conformably on this graywacke footwall member is an iron- formation member which is over 1,300 m in thickness. This iron-formation is cow posed of thin alternate bands of iron oxides and chert and is intruded by a number of diorite sills - some up to 122 rn (400 ft) in thickness. The north limb of this synclinorium dips at approximately 45' and bottoms out at about 1,000 m from surface in the central part of the mine. There are two sets of faults, many of which are intruded by diorite dikes, which trend east-west and southeast-northwest. Displacements are varied, reaching a maximum displacement of 243 m (800 ft). The ore is found lying directly on the slatey footwall and its position is largely controlled by the faults and dikes, with the bulk of the ore being on the upper side of these structures. The ore is composed of soft earthy hematite and martite with vertical thicknesses up to 122 m (400 ft) although the average thickness would be closer to 46 m (150 ft). The ore averaged 60% iron and 7% silica on a dried analysis. The Mather Mine is located on the north limb of the syncline and was worked from two shafts, the deepest of which. was 1,09 7 m. These two shafts are about 2 km apart and serviced a total of 8 working levels between them during the life of the mine. The level spacing was about 61 m (200 ft). The main haulageways were driven parallel to the ore/footwall contact in the hard cow petent graywacke wherever possible. On the lower levels, deeper into the footwall, naked development was common. This material graded into roof bolting ground towards the upper stratigraphic portion. As drifting progressed further into the upper stratigraphic portion of the footwall, progressively stronger steel sets had to be used. From the main haulageway, cross-cuts were turned into the orebody on 61 m (200 ft) centers and extended as far as needed to recover the ore available to that particular cross-cut. The main haulageways and cross-cuts were driven 3 m (10 ft) high, 3 m (10 ft) wide at the top and 4.6 m (15 ft) wide at the bottom. This configuration would accomodate a set composed of a 2.7 m (9 ft) cap on top of two 2.7 m (9 ft) legs angled out at 18'. A sill plate was used under each leg to prevent its sinking into the ore below. The type of steel used was dependent on the expected weight to be experienced. Sets were placed on 1.63 m (5 ft 4 in.) centers; however, in extremely heavy areas, it was sometimes necessary to install sets on 0.8 m (2 ft 8 in.) centers. On the top two levels (5th and 6th), the ore was considerably hard-er and was mined by sub-level stoping and long hole drilling. Very light steel sets were used in the main haulageways and cross-cuts and timber was used in the production drifts. Some con- crete production drifts were installed on 6th level, but proved to be uneconomical. However, as mining reached greater depths, the ore became softer and more massive, reaching its maximum vertical heights on 11th and 12th levels. John D. Price (Colorado Fuel and Iron Corp., Pueblo, Colo)—The paper on the coal fields of the Oaxaca district as prepared by engineers Toron and Cortes-Obregon of the staff of the Bank of Mexico bears witness to the thorough and careful way in which the men associated with this organization perform their work. There is little to be added to their paper in way of discussion other than to confirm and amplify some of their statements. Since the only extensive and well-developed field of coking coal lies in the northeastern section of the country adjacent to Sabinas in the state of Coahuila, it follows that blast furnace plants would be located in that same region. Two such plants are now operating at Monterrey and Monclova, using coke produced at the Sabinas district mines. But the nearer of these two plants is 600 miles from Mexico City and even farther from the center of population. Transportation of products from these mills to the market area is therefore expensive, both because of the distance and the difficulty of the terrain over which it must be carried. The development of an integrated steel industry closer to the center of population has therefore long been a goal toward which the Mexican technicians have been striving. While the presence of coal of some grade has been reported in many of the states, and many ideas have been advanced regarding its possible uses in iron and steel production, deposits of anthracite in Sonora and the various coals of the Oaxaca district as reported on in this paper are the only ones that have been explored in a serious manner. The coking coal from the Mix-tepec zone appears to offer promise of producing a coke which could be used in a standard blast furnace. Several problems are indicated, however: 1—The ash in the coal is high as mined, but indications are that it can be washed to an ash content of 15 pct with a recovery of 70 pct of washed coal. 2—Such washing would increase the volatile content from 17.4 pct to about 20 pct, and in a byproduct oven this should give a coke yield of close to 80 pct with an ash content of coke under 20 pct. 3—A free swelling index of 5 appears low for a good coking coal, and below that of the coals from the Sabinas district, which show between 6 and 9. But washing of the coal should result in an improvement in this regard; in the United States coals from Utah with an index even lower than 5 have made a usable coke. 4—A coal with volatile as low as 17.4 in raw coal and 20 in washed coal would come close to being classed as a low-volatile rather than medium-volatile coal, and low-volatile coals are notorious for their high expansion properties. Several plants in the United States are making coke from straight medium-volatile coal of 26 to 28 volatile content, and one at Rosita,, Mexico, from coal of 25 volatile. But no plants to my knowledge are using coal as low as 20 volatile. Since the Rosita coal appears to be a borderline coal from the angle of its expansion properties the coking of one of the straight lower volatile must be approached with caution. 5—There are few coals possessing any degree of coking properties which cannot be used in coke production by careful attention to its preparation and blending. The fact that coals of other types are available in this same region make improvement through blending very possible. 6—There are other workable methods of reducing iron ore other than the conventional coke-blast-furnace method. These will not be discussed here but it is known that their use has been considered. The technicians of not only Mexico but also of the other Latin American countries are keenly aware of their natural resources and their national needs. This paper emphasizes the fact that the Mexican technicians are working on their problem and attempting to speed the day of self-sufficiency for their country. Salvatore Cortes-Obregon (author's reply)—I wish to thank Mr. Price for his kind remarks. The Mixtepec coal as shown in Table II has 30 pct ash and a free swelling index of 5, but when the same coal is washed to 15 pct ash it has a free swelling index of 8 to 9 and the volatiles increased from 17.4 to 20.7 pct. A satisfactory coke has been produced from blends made in the Mexican laboratory using at least 40 pct of the Mixtepec coking coals with the other Oaxaca non-coking coals. Koppers in Germany report good coke obtained from the Oaxaca coal with a blend of 80 pct Mixtepec coal. Consideration is being given the possibility of using methods other than the conventional blast furnace for the reduction of iron ore near the Oaxaca area; electric furnaces appear promising. The non-coking coals could be used to produce cheap electric energy and the coking coals to make metallurgical coke.

Introduction Coal has been mined in the western United States since the mid-1800s. The resource is abundant in the West. Despite recent economic conditions, it remains an important part of the nation's energy warehouse. Many of the seams that comprise the western resource base are thick, some exceeding 61 m (200 ft). Multiple, closely-spaced seams or thick coals that split into two or more minable seams are also common. Historically, subsurface development recovered from less than 15% to 50% of these deposits (Matson and White, 1975). This resulted in a substantial loss of inplace reserve due to the limited height that could be mined using the available technology. In an effort to increase future recovery from such deposits, the US Bureau of Mines analyzed the potential for incorporating three thick-seam mining methods into western coal mines. These methods are high-face longwall, multislice longwall, and longwall caving. They were developed in Europe and are being used to mine thick coal seams in Europe and Asia. One aspect that will determine their success in the US is the geology of the individual deposit; namely, are the methods adaptable to the geologic conditions characteristic of western coal? This paper analyzes some of the geologic factors that would affect development of thick or closely-spaced seams using these mining methods. Occurrence of thick and closely-spaced seams Since mining conditions and methods differ around the world, a thick seam is often defined as a seam whose total thickness cannot be extracted using the available equipment. In the western US, the maximum extractable mining height is about 4.3 m (14 ft). For this research, a thick seam was defined as a minable seam 4.6 m (15 ft) thick or more. Since one of the seams is usually lost using standard mining methods, closely-spaced or split seams were also addressed. These were defined as two minable seams 1.5 m (5 ft) thick or more separated by 9 m (30 ft) of interburden. Thick or closely-spaced coal seams are common in the West. Their importance has not been documented due, in part, to the methods used to measure resources. In the past, all reserves greater than 1.1 m (42 in.) thick for bituminous seams and greater than 3 m (10 ft) thick for subbituminous seams were grouped together and were differentiated only by rank. Further differentiation by seam thickness or minability was not done. For this reason, reserve figures for thick or split seams are difficult to determine. By analyzing available published resource data, Ferm and Muthig (1982) addressed thick seam resources. They estimated a resource of 90 Gt (99 billion st) of coal (16% of the Western resource base) in seams 4.6 (15 ft) or greater at less than 610 m (2000 ft) overburden. Yet, a later study of Pierce and others (1982) on one thick seam deposit in the Powder River Basin estimated a resource of 103 Gt (113 billion st). Pierce (1986) reported that the overburden reached a maximum of 731 m (2400 ft). The resources in this single deposit exceeded the 90 Gt (99 billion st) total projected for the entire western US by 12.7 Gt (14 billion st). Due to such differences, this author chose to look at reported occurrences of thick or closely-spaced minable seams in place of resource figures, to verify the need to research thick seam mining in the West. An occurrence was defined as an isolated site where a thick seam or two or more closely-spaced seams were reported. The occurrences were derived from published material - mostly mine descriptions, measured sections, coal exploration logs, and oil and gas logs. Due to time constraints, the reserves associated with each occurrence were not determined. All data points were random. The analysis was limited to occurrences in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah. High-grade hematite ores in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia are associated with hydrothermal magnetite-apatite and magnetite-hematite-carbonate-apatite proto ores below the modern weathering surface. In addition, hydrothermal alteration of country rocks, once believed to be absent, is now recognised widely in shales and dolerites up to several hundreds of metres away from the ores. Both observations appear to exclude a simple supergene model for ugrading the host iron formations to high-grade hematite ore. Similar hydrothermal proto ores and country rock alteration are now being recognised in other high-grade hematite deposits worldwide, or have been recognised in the past.

The American Mining Congress International Coal Show, this year’s largest gathering of coal industry leaders, convened May 5-8 in Chicago. Against a 73 000-m2 backdrop of the coal industry’s most productive equipment,* some 23 000 people heard government and industry executives give guardedly optimistic reports of coal’s near future gains. Although a rocky road lies ahead, operators and suppliers still continue their search to improve efficiency. Among the ideas discussed at the show were better underground communications systems, continuous on-line coal analysis, and recovery of hard-to-float coal.

Introduction Of the techniques reported for cyanide removal from effluents, alkaline chlorination is the most common (Fisher and Wasser, 1969; Reidt, 1969). Shortcomings with this technique are the high reagent costs, chlorine contamination, and potential formation of cyanogen chloride. Chemical oxidation methods are also not suitable to remove cyanide from effluents containing sulphides in suspension, such as flotation tailings. An inexpensive method for removing cyanide, combined cyanide and related species from waste waters has been developed in Inco laboratories. The method is based on the use of sulfur dioxide (or a sulfite), lime, and air as the reagents. The decomposition reactions of cyanide, combined cyanide, and related species are catalyzed by copper in solution. Complete removal of cyanide species, most of which are oxidized to cyanate, is obtained by treating copper containing cyanide effluents with sulfur dioxide-air mistures while maintaining the pH between 6 and 10 with addition of lime. The new approach can also be applied to selective destruction of cyanide and combined cyanide in effluents containing sulphides in suspension, such as pyrrhotite. Again, a sufficient amount of dissolved copper must be present or added. Metals and precious metals present in the effluents are recovered as hydroxides by adjusting the pH of the treated effluents to about 9-10. Using the new method, the anionic species are removed in the following order: Free CN- > Complex CN- > Thiocyanate The above removal sequence is unusual as oxidants such as chlorine and ozone oxidize thiocyanate preferentially over the combined cyanide.

The Robinson Mining District, near Ely, Nev., is one of the major porphyry copper districts in the world. Within the district is an eight mile long east-trending zone of altered porphyry, metamorphosed sedimentary rocks, and sulphide mineralization surrounded by Paleozoic limestone, dolomite, shale and sandstone, Tertiary volcanics, and Quaternary alluvium. Six major disseminated ore deposits have been exploited in this zone. About 20% of the district production has come from disseminated ore in metamorphosed sedimentary rocks found adjacent to altered quartz-monzonite porphyry. The following brief statements summarize some of the relations between porphyry alteration, metamor-phism, and mineralization: 1) Disseminated copper ore does not occur in unaltered porphyry or in m-metamorphosed sedimentary rocks. 2) Sedimentary rocks have been only weakly metamorphosed where intruded by unaltered porphyry. 3) Intensely metamorphosed sedimentary rocks are found only adjacent to altered porphyry. 4) Many hydrothermal minerals are common to both altered porphyry and adjacent metamorphosed sediments. 5) Disseminated ore is found in altered porphyry and adjacent metamorphosed sedimentary rocks. 6) In general, there is a direct correlation between grade of ore in porphyry and copper content in the adjacent rocks. 7) Chemical changes in the altered porphyry and metamorphosed rocks appear to be related. The foregoing relations support a hypothesis that the porphyry alteration, the metamorphism of the sedimentary rocks, and the ore deposition were all part of a continuous hydrothermal process which probably closely attended the porphyry intrusion. The Robinson Mining District, most often referred to as the Ruth or Ely District, is located in eastern Nev. and is one of the major porphyry copper districts of the world. Production from 1908 through 1962 was nearly 250 million tons of ore averaging a little over one percent copper with a total metal value of nearly one billion dollars. The ore has been produced from six major disseminated-type deposits with the Liberty Pit deposit accounting for 70% of the total district production. Less than one million tons of base metal and gold ores have been produced from the replacement-type deposits of the district. Approximately 20% of the district production has come from underground mining operations; the pit ore has been mined with shovels and removed by train haulage, truck-train haulage combinations, truck haulage, and presently by a combination truck-skip system. Many of the ore deposits formerly worked by underground methods have been and are being exploited by open pit methods. (See Fig. I.) Two co.'s have accounted for virtually the entire production from the district. In 1958 Kennecott Copper Corp. acquired the district assets of Consolidated Coppermines Corp. and is now the sole ore producer in the district. Present operations are confined to the Liberty Pit where 22,500 tons of ore averaging a little less than 0.8% copper is mined per day. Cutoff grade is 0.4% copper, and the stripping ratio is three to one. The ore is hauled by rail 23 miles to the McGill Reduction Plant where it is concentrated to about 20% copper. Molybdenite is recovered as a by-product in the mill. The copper concentrates are smelted in McGill, and the blister copper is shipped for refining to Balt. where gold, silver, platinum and palladium are recovered. The Robinson Mining District has been well known as a porphyry copper district for the past fifty years, but many geologists are unaware of the fact that a large portion of the production has come from disseminated ore found in metamorphosed sedimentary rocks. The scope of this paper describes the occurrences of disseminated ore in the various metamorphosed sedimentary rocks, and presents evidence for the hypothesis that these ores are genetically, spacially, and coevally related to the disseminated ore in the porphyry rocks. Publication of this paper was granted by the management of Kennecott Copper Corp. A. H. James suggested and encouraged the writing of the manuscript. Froth flotation is the most widely-used method of separating fine coal, especially coal with coking properties. However, froth flotation is not efficient for treating ultrafine coal and coarse coal particles. Our previous fundamental test results demonstrated that cavitation-generated nanobubbles can significantly improve coal and phosphate flotation performance over a wide particle size range. In this study, the effect of nanobubble on the flotation performances of different particle size fractions of coal was investigated using a bank of 10-liter flotation cells, a specially designed 50 mm inside diameter column and a 152 mm inside diameter column. It was found that nanobubbles that were either directly formed on or subsequently attached to the surface of coal particles during coal froth flotation process improved flotation efficiency. The use of nanobubble in a bank of mechanical cells flotation and column flotation significantly increased the flotation recovery at a given product grade. Nanobubbles increased the flotation rate constants of different coal particle sizes. The presence of nanobubbles in flotation slurry could extend the lower and the upper particle size limits for effective coal flotation.

THE relationship between hardenability and weldability has been mentioned many times. The ease of making a hardness survey has led to its wide use as a criterion [ ] of weldability and with a given class or series of steels for which the ductility under weld heat-treatment is known the test is entirely suitable. However, in studying a new steel the hardness survey is of less value, since it is based on the assumption that there is a correlation between hardness and ductility. Several attempts have been made to derive indices for weldabilityl and hardenability from the chemical analysis. In most of these proposals the effects of the different elements were considered to be additive, but recently Grossmami2 proposed a novel method of calculating the hardenability of a steel from its chemical composition. In the [ ] method proposed, a steel is considered as having a base hardenability due to its carbon content and grain size, and this base hardenability is multiplied by a factor for each chemical element present, The final product is the hardenability. The purpose of the present study is to point out the possible relationship between hardenability and the effect of welding on hardness and ductility for a number of plain carbon and low-alloy steels. The composition of the 25 steels reported in this paper as determined by chemical analysis is given in Table I. To eliminate the effect of variations in finishing temperatures, the 1/2-in. plates were normalized after heating for one hour at 1650°F. in a controlled-atmosphere furnace.

Orebodies that contain more than one economically important mineral are generally evaluated by parametric cut-off grades. This approach often leads to mis-valuation of mineral deposits because cut-off grades are not based on the grades of each individual mineral and, because of the parametric formulation, are only indirectly related to the individual grade distributions. The only realistic approach is a formulation that accounts separately for each component mineral. The grid search method can be used as a means of multi-mineral cut-off grade optimization in this context. This paper describes the use of the grid search method in cut-off grade optimization for multi-mineral deposits. The authors introduce the general concepts of the method and formulate its application to cut-off grade optimization; they describe a software implementation of the method that can accommodate cut-off grade optimization for mineral deposits that contain up to three economic minerals. T HE year 1920 will be a memorable one in the history of the world's coal supply. The prices reached were the highest of modern times, and as usually happens at such a time, the quality of the output deteriorated. In the last two years of the war, the world's output had risen close to the pre-war level. After the armistice, however, the cessation of munitions manufacture and the delay in resumption of normal business curtailed the demand for coal. Industrial disputes both in Europe and America closed many mines late in 1919 and further reduced the supply. Thus when in 1920 the world set its face to work again and industrial activity was resumed where resumption was possible, consumers' reserves of fuel proved insufficient and an almost universal feeling of apprehension over the coal supply swept around the world. The reasons for this alarm-lately a thing of the past-become clear when the world's production in 1920 is cast up.

This paper presents a detailed and systematic approach to metallurgy diagnostics using an integrated novel gold deportment technique for complex copper-gold and refractory gold ore bodies. This uantitative gold deportment for these complex ore bodies is a challenging task due to reasons such as lower grades, high variability of visible and invisible gold content in different sulphides and iron oxide phases, significant presence of disseminated and composite carbonaceous matters along with associations of various copper sulphide phases. Gold mostly occurs as "invisible gold" (sub-microscopic gold) as solid solution or as colloidal-sized particles in different sulphides and other phases. The dominance of invisible gold and presence of highly preg-robbing and finely disseminated carbonaceous matter adversely affects gold recovery in flotation and leach circuits. Studies were initiated on various complex ore deposits and also on samples representing various process streams. Some case studies are presented in this paper to demonstrate the value of a high confidence gold deportment methodology in developing insights for problem diagnostics and to identify opportunities for metallurgical improvements. A systematic and holistic approach involving different fields of expertise is critical for successful development and delivery of solutions for complex ore bodies. AT THE TURN of the century the nonferrous alloy industry was awakening to the value of scientific metallurgy, and brass foundries and rolling mills began to establish their own research laboratories for scientific research and control. As the industry grew and its scope broadened it became apparent that an organization was needed that would stand in the same relation to the nonferrous industry as the American Foundrymen's Association did to the iron foundry business. The brass founders' group of the foundrymen's association discussed the matter and it was finally decided to appoint a com- mittee to draw up a constitution for a new organization to be known as the American Brass Founders' Association. Charles J. Caley was chairman and Dr. Richard Moldenke secretary of this committee. The object of the organization as defined by the constitution was the study of the technological development of alloying and founding non- ferrous metals, and furthering the advance of nonferrous metallurgy and the standardization of materials and operations in cooperation with the Bureau of Standards and engineering societies.
