This paper describes field and laboratory investigations conducted on a dust-collection system recently designed for integral use with a continuous mining machine. The results of the field study showed that the average respirable dust concentration measured at the machine operator's position was reduced by about 60 percent (from 8.7 to 3.5 milligrams per cubic meter), and total and respirable dust concentrations in the return air were reduced by approximately 70 percent. The data indicated that approximately 20 percent of the dust generated at the face was not passed through the scrubber. The lab-oratory results showed that the overall efficiency (by particle count) was approximately 80 percent for total dust concentrations (minus 20 micrometers in size) typical of those encountered underground. Calculations based on total dust concentrations measured during the underground study indicated that the respirable mass concentrations of the effluent from the scrubber would still exceed acceptable levels even if scrubbing of all the air at the face were possible.

Based on the mine safety and health administration (MSHA)reports, mining truck accidents are among the significant causes of fatalities in the mining industry. The major causes of haulage accidents can be divided into non-driving and driving factors, such as truck-related sudden failures and operator performance. Numerous parameters affect trucks' safe operation, but situational awareness plays a significant role. Due to the distinct structure of mining trucks, making them efficient for mining purposes, the operator has a very limited field of view (FOV), making them prone to accidents resulting in losing lives. The cabin's position blocks the truck's right and rear sides, creating several blind points around it. Aiming to test/train the operator's awareness of the surrounding, a proximity detection system is developed through a multiplayer virtual reality (VR) application to investigate the human factor in equipment collisions. The operators were examined and monitored when asked to conduct what exactly happened in the Marigold mine truck accident without being aware of the scenario. After receiving sound, vibration, and visual alarm warnings, their reaction and performance were analyzed. The platform is developed using the Unity game engine for HTC VIVE virtual reality goggles. An Omni-direction treadmill and a motion simulator platform are utilized for the player and dump truck operators. Fifteen students were monitored when driving the dump truck receiving/not receiving proximity detection alarms. None of them repeated the accident when receiving proximity alarms. Also, they found the visual alarm the most comfortable while driving the truck.

El modelo está basado en los fenómenos de transporte de solución a través de la pila y la cinética de cianuración de los metales contenidos en el mineral, el cual permitirá simular los cambios en los parámetros operacionales y metalúrgicos como diferentes tipos de mineral, flujos entre plantas Merrill Crowe y CIC, un mejor tratamiento de excesos de agua para minimizar su efecto en la producción de oro y el manejo óptimo de soluciones y predicciones a futuro de producción de oro.

"In this study, reduction of iron ore pellets was carried out at 800-950°C by simulating the atmosphere of typical coal gasification gas. The effects of temperature, gas composition and reduction degree on swelling were investigated respectively. Reduction degree was obtained according to the weight loss records. And volume changes of pellets during reduction were evaluated by infrared photography. Results showed that the pellet swelling increased with temperature and decreased slightly with hydrogen content in the reducing gas. The swelling peaked when reduction degree reached about 40% and then decreased to be stable finally. The microstructures of pellets during reduction were examined by reflected light microscope and relatively rational explanations were proposed for their swelling behaviors.PrefaceDirect reduction iron is an important and indispensable raw material for high-purified and high-quality steel in the electric furnace smelting. Gas-based shaft furnace direct reduction process has very strong competitative ability; however, this technique requires natural gas as reducing agent, so its development has been restricted by gas source and area. Compared with gas-based reduction method, coal based reduction method has the disadvantages of higher production cost and lower productivity. In China, coal resources are abundant and coal gasification technology is mature, and the development of coal gasification shaft furnace direct reduction process is promising. [1] The gasification methods of fixed bed method (Lurgi method), fluidized bed method (Undok method), airflow bed method (Texaco coal water slurry method and Shell dry powder coal method) have been put into use successfully. These syngas generated by different methods can meet the actual production requirement of shaft furnace. However, the compositions of the effective reduction gas in the syngas are quite different. The ratios of hydrogen and carbon monoxide (H2/CO) of Undok or Shell coal gas, Texaco coal gas and Lurgi coal gas are 0.4, 0.6~ 1.0 and 1.6~2.3, respectively. [2] In the coal gas direct reduction process, the swelling behavior of iron ore pellets is various due to the differences of the gas composition, reduction temperature and reduction degree, and it seriously affects the normal operation ofDRI production. [3-9] Therefore, the research on the swelling behavior and its mechanism of iron ore pellets in direct reduction were carried out in this paper."

Recently there has been a considerable revival of interest in the effects of the various elements commonly added to brass for the purpose of increasing its strength. For many years the work of Guillet2 alone gave reliable information in this regard. Even today his determinations of the coefficients of equivalence of the various elements relative to zinc in brass are those universally employed in industry. This is so because these coefficients have stood the test of time—their substantial correctness has been proved in almost universal practice. It is not our intention to discuss here these coefficients or their use. Rather do we wish to emphasize the need for further systernatic studies of the mechanical properties of the ternary systems of copper, zinc, and other individual elements. Since Guillet published the results of his first investigations Millington, 16 Smalley33 and Thiband 45 have added somewhat to our information. In general they have confirmed the findings of Guillet, which may be stated in the following rather general terms: 1. The addition of aluminum to the 70:30 and 60:40 brasses progressively increases their hardness and strength and reduces their ductility and resistance to shock. 2. The addition of small amounts of iron to a 60:40 brass improves its strength without affecting its ductility. 3. The addition of small amounts of manganese to a 60:40 brass causes a progressive increase in its strength and reduction in its ductility. A considerable amount of information has been amassed in regard to the effect of nickel on brass (9, 22, 41) which it is unnecessary to refer to here, in view of the scope of this paper. The situation in regard to these alloys in 1926 was very clearly stated by an anonymous writer,47 in The Metallurgist of February of that year, whose remarks were so to the point that they are well worth quoting: It will he seen that there are still large fields remaining to be studied in each of these systems (those of the aluminum, iron, nickel and manganese brasses) before our knowledge is adequate. Reports that set forth the pertinent facts of existing secondary-recovery operations are an integral part of the work of the Bureau of Mines in promoting conservation and efficient utilization of the petroleum resources of the Nation. Knowledge of the success or failure of waterflood projects in an area is very useful to other operators. Although projects will not have identical results, information concerning the flood performance, method of operation, and difficulties encountered on one project will help operators to determine the feasibility of flooding a similar sand and to select the methods of operation most likely to prove successful. The increasing cost of discovering and developing new oil reserves, as well as the unending effort to reduce operating costs and increase ultimate oil recovery from known petroleum reservoirs, has required the petroleum industry to evaluate continuously the performances of various secondary-recovery methods. Waterflooding was recognized early by the petroleum industry as a possible means of increasing oil recovery. From the early accidental floods in Pennsylvania and through many haphazard attempts to inject eater into oil-bearing formations, waterflooding emerged as one of the more important methods of oil recovery. Waterflooding is important not only to the oil industry but also to the economy of the area concerned.

The Overall Slope Angle (OSA) of pitwalls plays a crucial role in the financial return of an open pit mine. In current practice, pitwall profiles are designed to be planar in cross-section within each rock layer, ie the profile inclination across each layer tends to be constant. A new slope design software, OptimalSlope, has been recently proposed to determine the geotechnically optimal profile shapes for the pitwalls of mines. OptimalSlope seeks the solution of a mathematical optimisation problem where the overall steepness of the pitwall to be designed is maximised for an assigned stratigraphy, rock properties (unit weight and strength) and Factor of Safety. The geometry of the benches is provided as input to OptimalSlope. The results obtained so far on three mine case studies in isotropic rock masses (Utili et al, 2022; Agosti et al, 2021a, 2021b) show that optimal profiles are up to 5° steeper than their planar counterparts – ie the planar profiles exhibiting the same FoS – leading to realising significant saving on waste rock and as a consequence Net Present Value increments and carbon footprint reductions. OptimalSlope algorithms have been modified to deal with anisotropic rock masses characterised by direction dependent shear strength. In the paper, the case of rock masses in banded iron formations (BIF) is tackled. A data set of anisotropic rock shear strengths typical of Western Australia is considered. The Snowden modified nonlinear model was employed to characterise the anisotropy of the rock mass shear strength. From the OptimalSlope simulations performed emerges that optimal pitwall profiles can increase significantly the Overall Slope Angle in comparison with planar profiles featured by the same Factor of Safety. LEM stability analyses of all the profiles were also performed by Rocscience Slide 2 to independently verify the FoSs of the optimal profiles obtained.

The hydrogen-absorbing materials are expected to have the following properties at moderate conditions, (a) a large capacity of hydrogen absorption, (b) the absorption rate of hydrogen is large and (c) hydrogen-absorbed materials can easily desorb hydrogen. Thus the three concepts of capacity, rate and reversibility seem to be indispensable to clarify the mechanism of hydrogen absorption by the materials. In this work, the amount of absorbed hydrogen, the absorption rate and the reversibility of hydrogen absorption- desorption reaction were measured for binary R-M systems (R = Y, La, Ce; M = Co, Ni). These experimental results were discussed by the following three physical properties that were calculated by the extended Hückel method, i.e. the density of states unoccupied by electrons, the cohesive energy and the energy fluctuation. The major results are as follows: (a) the amount of absorbed hydrogen increases with the density of states in the energy range between -9 and -4 eV, (b) the R-M compounds of which energy fluctuations are large show a large value of rate of hydrogen absorption, and (c) when the cohesive energy is large, the compound has a tendency not to easily desorb hydrogen, i.e. its reversibility is poor.

West Virginia's economy has been closely linked with coal. West Virginia is consistently one of the top three coal-producing states. Its 149 Mt (164 mil¬lion st) produced in 1992 represented 16.5% of total US coal production. In recent years, the state's economy has experienced a diversification away from its traditional employment base of min¬ing and heavy manufacturing. However, the coal industry remains an integral part of the lives of West Virginians. Coal is mined in 33 of the state's 55 counties. In many of these counties, the coal industry is the largest private employer and contributor to the economy. West Virginia has three major coal-producing regions. The northern region produces coal high in gas and sulfur content (steam coal). It is consumed primarily by utility and industrial markets. The southeast region produces high-grade coal low in sulfur content but high in carbons and Btu (metallurgical coal). The southwest region produces metallurgical and steam coal. The high-grade metallurgical coal is used in the production of coke for steel manufacturing. Metallurgical coal also comprises the majority of coal exported from the United States. During 1993, West Virginia was the country's largest exporter of coal, accounting for 44.5% of total US coal exports.

The heat treatment is a process that acts as a key factor in the tool life of tools made with hot work tool steels. Due to their applications, the main desirable metallurgical properties of this material class are toughness and hot resistance, without which the tools may suffer premature failure, and may lead to increases in the cost of producing articles made using such tools [1, 2]. Therefore, special attention must be given to the heat treatments practiced in these steels, whose operations involve quenching and tempering. The present work carried out the effects of the austenitizing and tempering temperatures on the microstructural condition, hardness and impact properties of TENAX300IM®, modified AISI H11 with lower silicon content. Hardness was measured by the Rockwell method, C scale; the toughness was evaluated by the Charpy-V impact test; and the microstructure for each condition was evaluated by optic microscopy. It was shown that higher austenitization temperatures resulted in increased grain size and hardness; higher tempering temperatures resulted in reduction of hardness, and secondary hardening peaks were observed for some austenitization conditions. The impact resistance showed an inverse behavior to that of the hardness, remaining initially constant, up to ~ 550 ° C of tempering temperature, and then increasing with the tempering temperature. The microstructures presented great dissimilarity, mainly due to the dissolution of carbon and alloying elements in the matrix.

As part of a U.S. Bureau of Mines-sponsored project on the utilization of "stiff' backflll to minimize potential rock burst hazards, a finite element study was undertaken to predict stresses and displacements around a stope mined up from the 5400 level of the Sunshine mine, Kellogg, Idaho. This stope was to be backfilled using a high-modulus fill. In preparation for that configuration, certain instrumentation was installed near the 5400 level to monitor stress changes. Due to untenable economics, only 2 cuts of the stope were ever made. This paper presents the results of the instrument readings taken during the first cut and compares them with the numerical predictions, as well as presents the modeling results of closure and fill stresses in the stope if it had been mined.

The progress results of a pilot plant study on the effects of ball top size and other mill operating parameters are reported. Test series on taconite and quartzite crude ores using a 1.7-m diam primary mill in closed circuit with a vibrating screen indicate clear trends on the improvements of mill throughput and power consumption when using larger diameter balls. Possible effects on mill liner and ball consumption as well as future research plans are discussed.

Water pollution has been an integral part of most mining operations in the past. Most mine planners had designed their mining operations with little or no regard for prevention of water pollution. The main planning element was always the economics of mineral recovery. Quite often the cheapest means of mineral recovery resulted in the largest water pollution problems. Recent water pollution laws have introduced a new economic element - water pollution control costs - to be considered in mine planning. Water pollution control costs can be extremely high. Foresighted planning can minimize these costs and provide better water pollution control. Effective pollution control preplanning can eliminate pollution from active mines and minimize pollution that may occur after completion of mining. Presently available technology can practically eliminate water pollution by treatment of the mine water. Use of water treatment during mining has no effect on the levels of water pollution after treatment ceases and the mine is abandoned. Therefore, this section of the report deals with preplanning to reduce water pollution, both present and future, by using at-source control techniques. Proper planning of mining and pollution control techniques should follow the concept of a complete, comprehensive reclamation plan. This plan should have control measures designed for all phases of mining from initiation through completion. Preplanning involves acquiring complete information concerning the future mine site, defining the reasons why mining could cause pollution from the site, and determination of available techniques to prevent or minimize formation or transportation of pollutants. Location of haulage and access roads and other mine related facilities should be included in preplanning for water pollution control. The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the safe operating conditions for using recycled (used) lubricating oil from mining equipment as a partial replacement for diesel fuel to make ANFO-type blasting agents. The use of recycled oil (RO) saves energy, reduces oil imports, and reduces mining costs. Low ambient temperatures may cause these recycled oils to become too viscous for proper absorption by ammonium nitrate (AN) prills and result in poor blast performance, safety hazards, and environmental problems. To help quantify and resolve these issues, viscosity, mixing, and performance tests were conducted at various temperatures. Diesel fuels No. 1 and No. 2 were studied separately and in blends with 25,50, and 75% RO. Good quality ANFO mixes (94-6) were produced with dry absorbent prills and blended fuel (No. 1 diesel plus RO) at temperatures as low as -40° F (-40°C) with 75% No. 1125% RO, and at -20°F (-29°C) with 50/50. Diesel fuel No. 2 also made good mixes as low as -30" F (-34" C) with 75% No. 2/25% RO, and at 0° F(-18° C)with 50/50. Reference detonation velocity tests were conducted in 1.4" (3.6 cm) diameter steel pipe at 70°F (21°C) on No. 1 diesel ANFO (94-6), giving an average value of 9722 ft/s (2964 m/s). Comparison tests showed good ANFO performance at low temperatures. Blended fuel ANFO (75% No. 1/25% RO) mixed, loaded, and tested at -40°F (-40°C), produced an average velocity of 9247 Ws (281 8 m/s). A 50/50 blend gave a velocity of 8083 Ws (2464 ds) at -20°F (-29°C). Based on these results, a practical field method has been developed to help evaluate whether a specific oil blend will mix properly with AN at a low ambient temperature. This method will help to promote the safe and reliable use of RO ANFO at low temperatures, with adequate performance.
