Epithermal gold deposits occur in and near the marginal fault that circumscribes the Goldfield, Nevada, Tertiary caldera. The gold occurs disseminated in alunite, pyrite, and kaolin- bearing silicified zones that are controlled by the circular faults. Other Tertiary calderas (i.e., Summitville and Red Mountain No. 3) have epithermal disseminated gold deposits located in and near their marginal circular faults in settings that resemble the Goldfield example. These additional caldera- controlled epithermal gold deposits are also characterized by alunite, pyrite, and kaolin-bearing silicified rock that act as hosts for the gold disseminations. The Goldfield District is therefore an exploration model for those seeking disseminated epithermal gold deposits in a caldera setting.

Fluorspar is found in most of the states from the Rocky Mountains westward, and commercial production of the mineral has been reported from Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Washington. The map in Fig. 1 indicates the general distribution of many of these deposits but it is by no means complete. In the summer of 1926 the writer examined certain deposits of fluorspar in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico and Washington; in November, 1927, revisited the Jamestown, Colo., district, and in earlier years examined deposits in Colorado and New Mexico. Based on notes of his own and on descriptions and other data by H. A. Aurand, H. W. Davis, R. B. Ladoo, V. C. Heikes, W. D. Johnston, Jr., and by producers of fluorspar, he prepared the following brief descriptions of deposits and estimates of reserves of fluorspar, originally for the use of the subcommittee on fluorspar of the Joint Committee on Foreign and Domestic Mining Policy and on Industrial Preparedness respectively of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. Descriptions of many fluorspar deposits in various western states and districts have been published. It is not feasible to summarize this literature here, but the appended bibliography will indicate to the interested reader what papers are available. Arizona Fluorspar has been reported as occurring in Arizona in the following localities: near Duncan, Greenlee County; near Naco, Tombstone, and Paradise, Cochise County; Black Mountain, Mojave County; 25 miles southwest of Tucson, and at Helvetia and Silver Bell, Pima County; near Mammoth mine, Pinal County; in Yavapai County, 7 miles from Aguila, and in the Bradshaw Mountains; and near Dome, Yuma County. Production has come principally from the Castle Dome district, Yuma County, with minor quantities from Greenlee, Pima and Yavapai counties. Despite increasing demand, the supply of silver is limited by its inadequate recovery from ores. Due to its scarcity in nature, its high ore variability and complex mineralogy of current silver deposits, its recovery by mineral froth flotation presents a real challenge for process engineers. A silver ore often contains significant amounts of five to ten different silver minerals and knowledge of the mineralogy is a necessary precursor to flotation testing. In this work, a complex silver ore was treated by using batch laboratory flotation, in an effort to find the best experimental conditions to obtain the optimal silver recovery. Mineralogical characterization of feed samples was conducted using a combination of tools, namely the mineral liberation analyzer (MLA) and inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), which indicated that most of the silver occurred as ?invisible? silver in pyrite. The pyrite assay of the ore was approximately 4%. The ore was processed in two flotation stages. The first stage, sulphide flotation, aimed to collect a sulphide mineral rich concentrate; then a non-sulphide flotation stage was performed by adding sodium sulphide and collectors to the remaining material in the cell, with the objective of obtaining a pyrite rich concentrate. To reach the target recovery of silver from this ore, various variables were altered. In the first stage: mixed collectors, activators, dispersants, and mainstream inert grinding were assessed. In the second stage, the conditions for sulphidization and subsequent flotation were both investigated. From the grade recovery curves for silver and sulphur it was possible to observe a similar metallurgical behavior for both elements, supporting the results given by the mineralogical characterization. An internationally recognised and uniform method for classification, categorisation and designation of mineral and energy resources is not yet available. With the increasing need for reliable and comparable coal resource data it is necessary to standardise the traditional classification procedures by quantifying the three basic evaluation criteria of economic feasibility, geologic assurance and recovery. For well documented deposits, geostatistical methods can considerably improve classification quality. A review is undertaken of major classification with particular emphasis on those that incorporate limits on estimation error.A geostatistically based algorithm for classifying coal resources within the current Queensland and New South Wales codes has been developed.Application of the classification algorithm for resources from a number of seams exhibiting different structural characteristics is assessed. The method is found to give classification results that closely reflect the error associated with an estimate of resource quantities based on current sampling densities.lbis requires a careful geostatistical analysis with an emphasis on geological awareness. Resource category restrictions although albitrarily assigned should remain constant for all deposits being compared. This requires some engineering judgement with additional interpretation also required for isolated and peripheral block.

Till date, coke has been produced mainly from coals with a content of volatile matters in the range of 20% to 28% and good coking properties. If such so-called "selfcoking" coals are available, blast furnace coke or foundry coke with the required quality characteristics can be produced in top-charged horizontal ovens. In this case, the possibility of using high-volatile coals and in particular coals with low-caking properties is very restricted. Even if high-volatile coking coals have good coking properties, coke produced from such coal alone will not meet the requirements in terms of coke strength. The mechanical coke properties are influenced by the charge coal blend and the coking conditions. In this context, the bulk density of the oven charge is a decisive factor. Research and development in the field of coke production in horizontal chamber ovens aims at improving the specific oven throughput, increasing the raw material basis and introducing environmental protection technologies. The key factor, however, is to guarantee and further improve the rentability of the coke production. It is very important to reduce the cost of the charge coal to a minimum at the same time maintaining or even improving the coke quality.

In the year 1581, the counselors of King Philip of Spain suggested to that monarch that a canal across the Isthmus of Darien would open the west coast of the South American continent to Spanish miners and explorers, enlarging and expanding the flow of precious metals then just beginning to trickle across the path cut by Spanish Conquistadors, from old Panama to Puerto Bello on the east coast. The King sent out a party of surveyors and explorers under the command of a young engineer, Savadaerro, who returned after two years, reporting upon a location for a canal which was virtually adopted by the French engineers employed by De Lesseps, who in 1877 commenced the work of constructing the Panama Canal-296 years after Sava- daerro's first survey was begun. The suggestion for an Isthmian canal, made to the king at a time when Spain was a proud, virile nation and when that country was contending with England in the fields of discovery and conquest, represents a measure of vision that has never failed to intrigue the imagination. That the young Spanish engineer recommended an undertaking so gigantic in conception that it took three and one-third centuries for its completion from the time it was first visioned matters little. Controlling unwanted ground movement is critical in mining as well as many other highly hazardous environments, such as construction and tunnelling. Sharing knowledge about effective hazard management is paramount to improving health and safety and operational outcomes across industries, and some industry sectors have embraced this openness as part of the way that they do business. In 2010, the Australian Coal Association Research Program funded the RISKGATE project to build a body of knowledge for managing a broad range of hazards across mine sites, lease areas and mine infrastructure within a mine-life or product life cycle perspective (eg from exploration through to decommissioning, or design through to operation). The RISKGATE body of knowledge was assembled from Australian coal industry experts through a semi-structured bowtie analysis-based action research workshop cycle. By capturing operational knowledge from industry experts, RISKGATE serves to provide a cumulative corporate memory at a time of high personnel turnover in the coal industry.This paper presents an overview of RISKGATE topics within the geological and geotechnical domain (strata underground, ground control open cut, outburst, coal bumps and bursts, tailings dams and inrush) with a summary of individual topic structures, as well as showing the contrasts and inter-relationships between these ground management topics. The online user can access information about the causes, controls and consequences related to a priority unwanted event (ie the point at which control of energy is lost) and use this information as a prompt for the development of risk assessments, incident investigation, audits of practice/plans/procedures and for training and development.The paper concludes with a discussion of how RISKGATE can be adapted to other mining domains (eg coal outside of Australia, hard rock mining worldwide, construction, tunnelling) and the opportunity for application of this body of knowledge and the RISKGATE action research process for knowledge management in other highly hazardous environments.CITATION:Kirsch, P, Hebblewhite, B, Sprott, D, Harris, J, Li, J, Shi, M, Whittaker, B, Galvin, J M, Bergin, P, Mitra R and Williams, D, 2014. Mukuk gold mine in South Korea produces a pyrite concentrate containing gold associated with arsenopyrite as a gangue mineral. The effects of Portland cement as a depressant on the flotability of arsenopyrite were studied to improve the separation of arsenopyrite from pyrite concentrate containing gold. A series of the fundamental flotation tests were performed using Portland cement as a function of pH and concentration of the collector. Flotation recovery of pyrite and arsenopyrite in the fundamental tests with amyl xanthate showed that arsenopyrite was depressed by the addition of a moderate amount of Portland cement, but pyrite was not depressed by it. In the flotation tests of the artificial mixture samples with arsenopyrite and pyrite, following pH were adjusted to be 10.5 by Portland cement, different amount of amyl xanthate was added. The results from these studies showed that flotation recovery of pyrite was 100 per cent under the condition of some addition of amyl xanthate, but arsenopyrite was not floating at all. Portland cement shows remarkable depression of galena, but its effect on the flotability of chalcopyrite is not as clear. In the pulp under Portland cement addition, chalcopyrite can be easily activated by the addition of sodium bisulphite, whereas galena is depressed more effectively. From the batch flotation tests with the pyrite concentrate, the galena concentrate and the Cu-Pb bulk concentrate from the mines, it was confirmed that the results of the batch flotation tests agree with the results of the fundamental flotation tests. The effects of depression by Portland cement on pyrrhotite, marmatite and stibnite are also discussed briefly.

Under a Cooperative Agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) and the Mining Industry of the Future Program, CQ Inc. is demonstrating the GranuFlow™ process for improving the recovery of fine-sized coal in commercial coal preparation facilities. The State of Pennsylvania’s Energy Harvest Grant Program is also providing funding for this project. The GranuFlow technology involves the addition of an asphalt emulsion to a slurry of fine-sized coal (<100 mesh or 0.15 mm, typically froth flotation concentrate) before mechanical dewatering in screen-bowl centrifuges. The emulsion selectively agglomerates the carbon-rich particles, resulting in increased particle size and improved recovery of the coal fines during the dewatering process. This paper summarizes the test conditions and current results for both bench-scale investigations and full-scale commercial plant demonstrations.

Two tunnels are being bored using a æHydroshieldÆ in section 3.1 of the extension of the Underground railway line 5. At the end of the two tunnels, directly in front of the Hotel Adlon, the shields cannot be retrieved. The steel shell of the shield will be left in place within a sealed concrete block and the reusable components taken out through the completed tunnel. For the first time in Germany, an Underground tunnel is being lined solely by means of UNI rings. BerlinÆs Underground network is 165 km long and has 167 stations. Some 450 million passengers are transported annually. On account of the urban planning modifications that followed reunification, the network has to be adjusted, particularly in the city centre. The most significant project is the extension of the U5 from Alexanderplatz to the Lehrter Bahnhof. After completion, the U5 will be a continuous east-west traffic artery. It will provide a direct link with the new parliamentary and government district, open up new business districts and the cultural centre of the city.

"INTRODUCTION The Good Fortune mine was sampled by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in June 1944. Project 984 was set up under the strategic minerals program to make old workings accessible for this sampling program. Actual operations commenced June 1, 1944, and were completed June 30, 1944.The deposit was visited and discussed briefly by Sidney H. Ball 3/ of the Federal Geological Survey in the summer of 1906 and by H. M. Chance 4/ several times from 1887 to 1900.LOCATION AND ACCESSIBILITYThe Good Fortune mine is situated in the Hartville mining district in Platte County, Wyo., approximately 9 miles northwest of the town of Guernsey. The property is about 100 miles north of Cheyenne, Wyo. (fig. 1).ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The Bunga Beds of the Late Devonian - Boyd Volcanic&apos; Complex is a well exposed succession of rhyolite, sedimentary rocks and minor basalt outcropping along the south coast of New South Wales. The sedimentary rocks vary from shallow water basin margin facies, to deep-water basin centre facies, and the majority of .the volcanics are associated with the deep water facies association. The volcanics are dominated by rhyolite domes, lavas and cryptodomes, whose margins are extensively autobrecciated and quench fragmented. In situ pyroclastics represent a very minor volcanic component and are restricted to the remnants of two small doors- top tuff cone successions. Pyroclastic debris is common in the sedimentary succession enclosing the volcanics and was clearly derived from shallow to emergent basin margin areas through mass-flow redeposition. The succession has bearing on the origin of the fragmental component of, the volcanics that host Kuroko- type massive sulphide deposits. The characteristics of these fragmental volcanics are not well documented. We suggest that based on the Bunga Beds,&apos;Kuroko-type volcanic successions are dominated by coherent rhyolite/ felsic lavas and intrusive domes, autobreccias and hyaloclastites, that in situ pyroclastics are rare or lacking, and that redeposited volcanic debris is abundant. Pyroclastic debris is most likely to have been derived from shallow areas marginal to the deep-water volcanic centre that produce the Kuroko-type volcanics and sulphides.

This paper describes a practical methodology, based on numerical modeling, for the prediction of progressive failure of underground-mine stopes having cable-bolt support. A case study of the 40-761 scope at the Kidd Creek mine, Timmins, Ontario, Canada is presented. Scope 40-761 was mined by blast hole open sloping in 1986 and was a lead scope within a mining block located between levels 36-1 and 38-2. Initially designed to peak at level 38-2, the scope back caved upwards =40 m towards level 36-1. After caving began, cable bolts were installed above the stope from level 36-1. The stope eventually stopped caving when the falling rock mass encountered a sufficiently high cable density. This paper provides details of the geomechanical data and modeling results of the case study. Numerical modeling of cable bolts around the mine stoke was carried out using a finite-element modeling software. The software, known as e-z tools, was developed by the first author.

Reduce rockfall fatalities and injuries by using innovative blasting practices to reduce damage to the rock at the excavation limits with little or no increase in cost. The Problem Falls of highwall have been a leading cause of fatalities, injuries, and equipment damage in the surface mining industry. Although the number of highwall falls is not great, when such an incident does occur it is about 14 times more likely to be fatal or result in severe injury and damage to equipment than other types of surface mine accidents. Overbreak or damage to the rock from poor or improper blasting practices is a major factor contributing to rock falls. Presplitting or cushion blasting is the technique most often recommended for improved wall control. This type of blasting however, adds to drilling and blasting costs and is not universally accepted by the industry. Air gap presplitting techniques, also called air decks, are currently being used in some mines as a less costly alternative to conventional presplitting. Approach Blasting can cause highwall damage, but proper blasting techniques have been shown to reduce the magnitude of rockfall problems. In preventing rock falls, it is important to maintain the natural strength of the rock structure to the greatest extent possible. Improved blasting practices have three main advantages: 1) they are preventive rather than corrective in nature; 2) they are cost effective; and 3) they have a very low impact on the mining operation when properly implemented. New ways of evaluating highwall integrity, such as seismic refraction tomography, were investigated.

"I am very pleased to be a member on this panel today because abrasion and wear in mills has been part of my life over the past forty years. My presentation will deal with the role Ni-Hard has played in combating wear and abrasion in mills. Before Ni-Hard came along, unalloyed white iron was used in ball mills and one of the most popular types of white iron liners was the pocket liner. Slide #1 illustrates the design of the pocket liner used at Dome Mines in their 5' x 22' pebble mills. The pockets filled with grinding media and it was on this that the wear took place. The concept is not unlike the new magnetic liner which utilizes the ore and grinding media to form the wearing surface. In this slide please note the tapered pocket type of cored bolt holes. If cored bolt holes do not fill with grinding media there could be excessive grooving or wear at that area. Therefore all cored bolt holes should be tapered in this manner.Before Inco patented the name Ni-Hard several foundries were making the alloy iron under different brand names such as Diamond Alloy, Mitchelloy and Specialloy. In the early days some of the Ni-Hard was poor quality. Inco provided foundries with technical knowhow and provided assistance to licence them to sell under the name of Ni-Hard. This was in the late 1920's. The material we are discussing is Ni-Hard type I with the following analysis (slide #2). It is a martensitic white iron with BHN of 550 - 600 and is a relatively easy alloy to produce in either a cupola or electric furnace. The annual average production of Ni-Hard in North America is 90,000 tons with mill liners making up 25,000 tons and grinding media 30,000 tons, according to Warren Spear of Inco."

In underground operations, where copper, gold and other metals are mined, the open stopes can be backfilled to stabilise surrounding workings. This fill may consist of tailings from the processing plant, usually mixed in slurry with a binder such as ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Extensive use is made of tailings in OPC-based paste fill, cemented hydraulic fill or cemented aggregate fill applications. A large underground operation such as the Mount Isa Copper Operations utilises over three million tonnes of backfill per annum. Geopolymers offer an alternative binder system with significant environmental advantages over OPC. Geopolymers are formed by polymerisation of aluminosilicate precursors in an alkali medium. They generally form products with superior strength characteristics as well as increased resistance to degradation, particularly under acidic conditions. Geopolymers have lower carbon dioxide emissions associated with their manufacture than OPC and offer further potential advantages, such as the use of less water and more waste materials. The application of geopolymers to weak material systems such as mine backfill has not been widely studied. The aims of this investigation were to assess a range of Australian mine process wastes for suitability as feedstocks in fill applications and to construct a range of these cemented minefills using a geopolymer binder. The physicochemical characteristics of each of the wastes are discussed as well as how they ultimately contribute to the geopolymer cement through direct replacement of OPC. Results from various tests on the candidate geopolymer fill formulations are presented and the potential of such fill formulations to replace OPC in mine backfilling operations is highlighted. The significant potential contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the use of geopolymer-based mine backfill across the industry is noted. Conversion of a single mine, such as the Mount Isa Copper Operations, is shown to match the reductions in greenhouse gas emissions due to the current total installed photovoltaic electricity generation capacity of Australia. A similar examination of wastes available to a gold mine could potentially yield new binders for use in established or new fill systems.

"This paper will cover recent developments in conveyor applications with specific reference to capacities, bell speeds and distances. It will also discuss certain unique arrangements of horizontal, curved and loop belt systems. In addition, the recent changes in safety factors resulting from new conveyor construction methods will be reviewed.IntroductionConveyor belt systems are currently undergoing dramatic changes. Their use is being extended to providing a viable means for the transportation of bulk material over longer and longer distances.In this paper, a brief account of the historical development&apos; of the belt is outlined, demonstrating how conveyor technology has adapted to changing market demands.Today, energy and environmental requirements are providing what may even be greater challenges. The ability of the belt conveyor to transport material and meet those requirements, places it in the position of replacing many conventional means of bulk material transportation.The paper also outlines some of the progress which has been recently made in this regard and includes a broad approach to the subject of belt design and application.Recent design developments have greatly extended the potential of conveyor belt systems to include applications thought impossible just a few years ago.Graphically illustrating the potential of this new technology IS a belting system currently operating in New Caledonia. Built in 1970, the system has an incredible centre distance of 43,000 ft, or about eight miles.Not to be outdone, the British Coal Board is currently constructing a belt system with a centre distance of 49,000 ft and a speed of 1,650 feet-per-minute. This system is expected to be completed in 1986.These innovative advances contrast dramatically to the conveyor belt&apos;s beginnings in the early industrial revolution. Oliver Evans, writing in the 1795 edition of &apos;Miller&apos;s Guide&apos; defined the conveyor belt as a ""broad endless strap of thin pliant leather or canvas, revolving on two pulleys in a case or trough.""Obviously, the conveyor belt has come a long way since those early days."

The pottery department has been aptly described as the "heart of the zinc plant," md every operator of a horizontal-retort plant is acquainted with the fact that good retort practice is the keystone of the smelting process. Since retorts and condensers are clay products, it is obvious that improvements in other branches of the ceramic industry should be observed for possible adoption in the pottery process for zinc smelting. Deaeration of clay bodies is one of the improvements that have become fully, established in many brick and pottery plants. Our investigation of a number of these installations always yielded the same answer—improved practice. Improvement in workability, elimination of laminations, less porosity, greater wet and dry strength, were among the claims put forth for this process. All of these features are exceedingly desirable characteristics in the manufacture of a zinc retort. A preliminary test, which involved truck transportation of deaired slugs over a relatively long distance, did show the value of many of these characteristics in forming the retort. Results from the standpoint of , longer retort life in the smelting furnace were not outstanding. The idea lay dormant for several years but was revived again in 1940, when it was decided to make whatever changes were necessary in the equipment for pottery manufacture to fully demonstrate the process. A number of the manu- facturers of machinery for clay work were asked to submit proposals, and the plan finally adopted was extremely simple and economical. Machine FOR DeaeRRATING Selection of the &apos;&apos;Straight-line&apos;&apos; principle for conversion of the "Wettengel" pug mill to a &apos;&apos;vacuum-extrusion" machine preserved some usable parts of the original equipment, such as the drive mechanism, and main shaft. The converted machine consists of a feed hopper, a compression and shredding zone, a vacuum chamber, and an extrusion barrel, as shown in Fig. I. In operation the clay mix travels from the feed hopper into the compression zone, where it is compressed and finally forced around the tapered cone into the vacuum chamber. As it enters this chamber the clay body is shredded into thin plates, for exFosure to the vacuum. The shredder consists of a hub mounted on the main shaft, to which are bolted segmental sections, each of which carries shredder knives. The compression zone and extrusion barrel function as seals for the vacuum chamber and the shredded clay mix is agitated thoroughly during its exposure to the vacuum. A vacuum pump, equipped with a 3-hp. motor, is attached to this chamber, and maintains 25 to 26 in. vacuum during operation of the mill. We found the response to be overwhelmingly positive.?
