Underground observations in a coal mine have indicated failure oft he immediate roof above the bords. Careful observations and photographic recording of occurrences of these roof failures, termed ?roof guttering?, have been made. The occurrence of guttering results directly in roof instability, and indirectly, due to the interaction of the guttering with natural planes of weaknesses in the immediate roof rock. In this paper, relevant observations of roof guttering, possible mechanisms of formation of roof gutters, laboratory testing for determination of material strength and deformation properties, and numerical analyses to explain underground observations are described. Mapping of roof failures showed that these took place mainly towards the centre of the roadways. Roof guttering was observed often to occur violently and with little warning. Occurrence of roof guttering has a negative impact on production?some panels are abandoned, production times are increased and safety of workers is compromised. The numerical stress analyses showed that, although none of the constitutive behaviour criteria used predicted the observed underground failures correctly, the extension strain criterion gave the best agreement.

This paper describes the educational philosophy behind the development and summarises other salient features of the Program. "A REVIEW OF MINERAL DISCOVERIES IN CANADA, and in particular the Canadian Shield, using the physical aspects of overburden reveals a trend in the art of exploration. At an early time of exploration (1847-1954), float and heavy clasts were used successfully to find ore deposits with little knowledge of Quaternary environments. At a later time (1955 to present) , use of Quaternary rock-units for sampling have made possible tracing indicator trains of float, heavy clasts and other ore-type clasts to the source bedrock. The basal till of retreat ice is now recognized as a1l favourable sampling environment and as such has been used to successfully discover hidden orebodies. The esker massive gravel is beginning to be recognized as a favourable environment and use of it has met with technical success. An understanding of those changes that have taken place during the transportation of the material and after its deposition is essential to proper sampling and treatment of the samples from the basal till and the esker massive gravel. Use of float and heavy clasts in search of orebodies is continuing in present-day exploration on the Shield. Lessons learned from it are being incorporated into exploration using favourable Quaternary rock-units for sampling. Hence, both subjects have a need for review and are discussed in this paper."

The travel path of a freed radioactive particle in an aquifer must be estimated from a limited number of available samples. This paper discusses geostatistical methods that minimize the 'uncertainty' associated with the predicted hydrologic surfaces and the predicted travel path. However, any estimation method will produce a single smooth predicted path. This 'sensitivity' will he evaluated using a geostatistical simulation method. The techniques will be illustrated using published data from the Wolfcamp and Pennsylvanian aquifers in the northern Texas Panhandle.

The Pyke asbestos deposits were discovered by Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd. in 1969 during the course of base metal exploration on the South Island of New Zealand. Extensive occurrences of chrysotile asbestos were found associated with the Red Mountain ultramafics in the headwaters of the Pyke River, and to the north and south along the ultramafic belt for a distance of 70 km. Surface evaluation and drilling by Kennecott in 1970 and 1971 identified numerous small deposits of good grade fiber in the Little Red Hills between the Pyke and Barrier Rivers. Additional drilling and three adits have been completed by other companies since that time. The property is presently held by Lime and Marble, Ltd., of Nelson, New Zealand, and Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd. This chapter presents the regional and local setting of the asbestos deposits, including the geology and nature of mineralization. In addition, the exploration methods used by Kennecott in the discovery and evaluation of these deposits are outlined. Subsequent work by other companies is mentioned, but not de- scribed in detail. This subsequent work did not alter Kennecott's conclusions or produce any serious changes in the interpretation of geology and mineralization. The author acknowledges the contribution of the many employees of Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd. who have been involved in the project. In particular, thanks go to Ramon Farmer, N.G. Corner, and A.W. McConie, who were responsible for completion of field work and reporting on the project. The responsibility for the conclusions and interpretations of this chapter are solely that of the author and result from his involvement in the discovery of the deposits and management of the exploration program. REGIONAL SETTING Ultramafic rocks on the South Island of New Zealand are thought to be Permian in age and occur between crystaIline and metamorphic continental rocks of Precambrian through Cretaceous age in the west, are thought to have once been part of the Antarctic subcontinent, and the extensive geosynclinal graywacke deposits of the Mesozoic New Zealand geosyncline in the east. They consist of the Dun Mountain ultramafics, a 130 km long segment of ultramafic rocks located at the north end of the South Island, and the Red Mountain ul- tramafics that occur in a zone 200 km long in the south half of the South Island as shown in Fig. 1. These two belts, once contiguous, have been offset a distance of 560 km by the still active Al- pine fault, which is analogous in character and offset to the San Andreas fault of the United States. The ultramafic rocks occur within a sequence of Permotriassic volcanic and sedimentary rocks that probably formed at the eastern margin of the continental plate. The ultramafics appear to be tectonically emplaced between Permian lithologies in the Dun Mountain belt (Coleman, 1966), and at the base of or between Permian volcanics and sediments in the Red Mountain belt. The Permotriassic ultramafic volcanic sequence of the Red Mountain ultramafic belt appears to be a typical ophiolite sequence. Ultramafic rocks, mixed mafic intrusive rocks and volcanics, volcanic rocks, and volcanoclastic sediments occur in apparent superposition from east to west in the area of Red Mountain. Farther south, ultramafic rocks are associated with basaltic volcanic rocks and some sediments, and still farther south are emplaced entirely in sediments. These structural compIications of the normal ophiolite sequence have resulted from the coincidence of Permian subduction, early Mesozoic extension and sedimentation, and Cretaceous subduction along the same plate margin (Landis and Bishop, 1972). Empirical models are now used for predicting the performance of hydrocyclones in terms of capacity. cut size (d50.c), water split and partition curve. These models (such as the model by Lynch and Rao and the model he Plitt) were developed and checked for hydrocylones with diameters larger than 4 in. However, for smaller-diameter hydrocyclones, little empirical modeling has been done. This paper reports on an extended experimental research program on small hydrocyclones. For these cyclones, the suitability of existing empirical models was investigated and their accuracy was compared. To improve the predictive capability of these models to small cyclones modifications to the equations are proposed.

"ONE OF THE FIRST DOCUMENTED APPLICATIONS of soil geochemistry in the Canadian Shield was that carried out by Chisholm in the Kenora district in 1949. This survey proved successful in outlining sulphide-associated gold veins utilizing cold-extractable metals. Since then, mining companies, government agencies - both provincial and federal - and universities have conducted soil investigations. Some of the results are documented in publications, others are on open file in provincial and federal mines departments and, unfortunately, many other investigations with both successful and unsuccessful results are buried in company files or have been discarded. This paper deals with soils within the scope of chemical studies of overburden in the Canadian Shield. The subject is a broad one and some definition is required. The soil investigations discussed herein are those aimed at the testing of specific targets more or less in the source area. This definition distinguishes soil investigations from other overburden studies which commonly monitor metal accumulations at some substantial distance from the metal source. Naturally this distinction is relative, because in many instances there is overlap."

FABRICATION of thin-film circuits deposited on glass substrates requires the formation of permanent electrical contacts. Since thin films are in the order of a few thousand angstroms thick and are deposited on nonconductive surfaces such as glass, new methods of lead attachment are being pursued in the microelectronics industry. Ultrasonic welding is being considered in thin-film technology since joining can be accomplished between a wide variety of dissimilar materials.l,' Ultrasonic welding is accomplished by a transducer-coupling-tip system which converts high-frequency electrical energy into mechanical vibrations and delivers it into the weld region. During the process the tip oscillates in a direction parallel to the surface of the weldments, inducing shear stresses in the work pieces which are clamped between the tip and anvil. Though the basic bonding mechanism is not clearly understood, it has been described as closely akin to friction welding. In the course of an investigation concerned with ultrasonic we!ding of aluminum wires to tantalum thin films (1400A) deposited on glass, low weld strengths were related to glass failure. Upon investigating this condition, an improved method of bonding was developed where the aluminum was held at a temperature where a minimum amount of strain hardening occurred during the introduction of ultrasonic energy. Experimental Procedure. Aluminum wires (0.015 in,) were bonded to tantalum thin films with an optimized set of welding parameters (power, time, clamping force) employing a commercial 100-w 60-kc ultrasonic welder. Forty-five degree shear-peel tests, where the lead is pulled at a 45-deg angle with respect to the substrate at 0.2 in. per min, produced a large variation from zero to the strength of the wire, Table I. Inspection of the weld region generally revealed: glass cracking before and after testing; the removal of glass nuggets from the substrate by the lead during testing, Table I; thin-film penetration. In an effort to improve the shear-peel strength, the aluminum between the tip and substrate was heated above ambient temperature through an argon gas media prior to and during welding with the same parameters employed above. With the addition of heat: wire deformation was increased; shear-peel tests all failed at the weld-wire junction, leaving the bonded portion undisturbed; no evidence of glass cracking or film penetration prior to or after testing was observed. In order to prevent failure at the weld-wire junction due to excessive wire deformation, 0.035-in. aluminum wires were welded to tantalum thin films with an optimized set of welding and heating parameters. High-water rapid-solidifying material, called 'high-water material', is a new material developed by the authors over many years. The material can solidify nine times its volume of water into solid. The material is a fine kind of binder with special properties. The solidifying body of high-water material with water has quite a high early strength. The compressive strength of the material within three days can reach the same strength as conventional Portland in 28 days. One ton of the material can replace three tons of conventional Portland cement as binder. Some important achievements have been made in application of high-water material. In metal mines, based on the material, a new full-tailing cemented backfill technology has been developed. The characteristic of the new technology is that high-water material is used as binder and full tailing or alluvial sand is used as backfill aggregate. Because of the application of the new technology, major technical problems in backfill technology such as classifying of tailing, dewatering, transportation of pulp, low strength of hackfill body. environmental contamination and so on, have been solved.

This paper describes an investigation of the sampling problems which contributed to erroneous Concentrator production forecasts at the mining operation of Bougainville Copper Ltd (BCL) in the North Solomons province of Papua/New Guinea.Reference figures provided by independently verified commercial shipment data demonstrated the existence of a bias in the calculated Concentrator production; the challenge was to identify systematic errors in each of the contributory measurements (feed tonnage and feed, tailings and concentrate grades).The uncertainty surrounding specific sampling and measurement errors precluded optimum metallurgical control and performance of the milling circuit, encouraged disputes about the difference between Mine versus Concentrator production estimates, and cast some doubt on efforts to follow political guidelines concerning a maximum feed tonnage or recovery oriented mill operating concept.An evaluation of routine results as well as specifically targeted test work identified the sampling errors associated with measured individual parameters.The emphasis in this report is on the procedure for quantitative error assessments.The measured performance of a mineral dressing plant is subject to a systematic error balance which can be derived from the more familiar weight and metal balances such as the two- or three-product formula.The resulting equations are generally valid, and they are applied to the measurements obtained at BCL's Concentrator to illustrate the method.

It has been postulated and, in a few instances shown, that some kind of dislocation structure will be present at semicoherent interfaces to accommodate small lattice mismatches. In the present study of the NiAl-Cr eutectic, regular arrays of interface dislocations are observed at the boundary between the chromium-rich rods and the NiAl-rich matrix. The networks were examined by transmission electron microscopy and selected area diffraction. The rods and the matrix have a crystallographic relationship in which all directions and planes of the two phases are parallel. The dislocation networks are cmposed of a<100> dislocations lying on the intersections of the cylinders with (100) planes. Dislocations forming hexagonal rather than square arrays are also observed at certain areas of the network. The morphology of the network is consistent with the interpretation of mismatch being accommodated by interface dislocations in the cylindrical geometry. The measured spacing between dislocations was used to calculate an apparent lattice mismatch between the phases (˜0.35 PCt)interface network energy (-140 ergs per sq cm), and network strengthening (-10,000 psi). It has been proposed by Frank and Van der Merwe1 that dislocations should be present at the boundary between two semicoherent crystallographically related phases. The role of the interface dislocations would be to reduce the internal stresses, caused by the mismatch in atomic spacing across the interface. Such dislocations have been observed at the interface between expitaxially grown films and Substrates.2-4 Interfacial dislocations have also been observed at precipitate-matrix interfaces.&apos;-&apos; Directionally solidified eutectics have been shown to have semicoherent phases1&apos; and would, therefore, be expected to have interfacial dislocations as found by Weatherly at a lamellar fault in A1-A12Cu.11 The NiAl-Cr eutectic appeared to be a promising system to examine because both phases are cubic, the lattice mismatch is small, and the phases are crys-tallographically related. Furthermore, the eutectic is easily thinned for transmission microscopy. Indeed, interfacial dislocations were observed and this report describes the nature of the dislocation networks in the boundary between the NiAl-rich ma-trix-phase and the fine chromium-rich rods.21 I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Ingots, 3/4 in. in diam and 6 in. long were made by melting in vacuum and casting under argon using 99.9 pct pure material. The composition, in at. pct, was 33 pct Ni, 33 pct Al, and 34 pct Cr. The ingots were then placed in A1203 crucibles on a water-cooled base, melted by means of induction, and withdrawn from the hot zone at the rate of 1 in per hr under argon.* * T his material was first directionally solidified in this laboratory by E. R. Stover Slices were taken perpendicular to the growth direction of the directionally solidified ingot for metallography and for transmission electron microscopy. The electron transmission samples were thinned mechanically, then thinned electrolytically in A-2 electrolyte* *A-2 electrolyte: 62 ml perchloric acid, 700 ml ethanol, 100 ml butylcellosolve, 137 ml distilled H20. until a hole appeared in the foil. 11) EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A) Optical Microscopy. The microstructure, viewed on a plane perpendicular to the growth direction, is shown in Fig. 1. The structure consists of cells or colonies of parallel chromium-rich rods in the NiAl matrix. The cells occur when there are impurities present12 or, in a ternary eutectic, if the composition is slightly off the eutectic composition. The axis of the chromium-rich rods is parallel to the growth direction except near the cell boundaries. Here the rods may assume angles to the growth direction; however, examination shows that the crystallographic relationship between the rod and the matrix remains the same. Fig. 1 includes cell boundaries where the rods formed at a large angle to the growth direction. On one occasion when it seemed desirable to reveal under the microscope not only the metallic structure of an alloy, but certain small non-metallic inclusions that are ordinarily obliterated by etching, it was discovered that, by partly eclipsing the illuminating pencil of light rays, the residual light was thrown on the object from one side and the structure was brought out in relief. At the same time, the non-metallic inclusions were retained in clear view. In this first demonstration of lighting obliquely through the objective a card was thrust part way into the light beam between the arc iris and the light filter; the shadow of the card on the filter served to locate its position. Next several stiff-paper disks of various diameters were mounted on flexible wires; some plasticine on the other end of the wires made it easy to adjust and maintain a disk at any desired position in the light beam. To facilitate manipulation, an assortment of disks was mounted on a wheel, as shown in Fig. 1. The purpose of partly eclipsing the light beam was discussed in an earlier paper.&apos; There it was pointed out that the usual methods of illuminating opaque objects for microscopic examination lend an unnatural appearance to the view, while the new method, which has been termed conical illumination, revels the true relationship of constituents by simulating natural lighting. In nature, all objects are lighted diffusely, or by light predominating from one direction, or by a combination of diffuse and directed light. Under these conditions, objects appear to have three dimensions—they possess relief. The kind of illumination known to metallographists as vertical or axial results in an unnatural appearance, as a large proportion of the illuminating rays are parallel to the line connecting the eye with the object, a condition almost never met in nature. This paper deals with the analysis of stress condition on the interface between two types of floor rock materials when the vertical stress is larger, or when the horizontal stress is larger in a rectangular opening. It indicates that the floor Failure and the failure stress of floor rocks are closely related. It also demonstrates that a larger horizontal stress is one of the most important factors in increasing the potential for floor rock failure and floor heave.

To reduce their sulfur emissions, many coal-fired electric power plants use wet flue-gas scrubbers. These scrubbers convert sulfur oxides into solid sulfate and sulfite sludge, which must then be disposed of. Currently, the major markets for scrubber sludge are for manufacture of gypsum products, such as wallboard and plaster, and for cement. However, the quality of the raw sludge is often not high enough or consistent enough to satisfy manufacturers, and so the material is difficult to sell. Other markets, such as paper manufacture and plastics fillers, have even more stringent quality requirements and will not accept raw sludge at all. In the work described in this paper, several reagents have been examined to determine their ability to selectively improve the flotation of the unreacted limestone contaminant away from the desirable products (calcium sulfite and gypsum). The most success has been achieved using a cationic collector, which shows a higher selectivity between calcium sulfite and calcium carbonate than do the anionic collectors that were studied.

The following notes are taken from results obtained on a standard 25-ft. Hancock jig1 tested during regular operation in the Bonne Terre mill of the St. Joseph Lead Co. The object of the tests was to determine the conditions for most effective work, and the nature of products that could be made. The material treated was sized between 9-mm. and 2-mm. round-hole screens, and was constant throughout the experiments. Three products were made, concentrates from the first three hutches, middlings from the fourth and fifth, and tailing from the sixth. The middlings were crushed in one pair of Allis-Chalmers Style B, 30 by 14-in. rolls, and elevated with the original ore to the 2-mm. screens, oversize of which formed the jig feed. While this arrangement was very simple, it gave rise to undesirable crowding of the circuit. Table 1 shows tonnage and assay values of the jig feed and products at the beginning of the experiments, and brings out the excessively large amount of middlings, comprising 63.3 per cent. of the total material fed to the jig. The rolls, being heavily overloaded, did very little crushing, a screen analysis of the product showing that only 27 per cent., or 128 tons, was crushed fine enough to pass to the tables. The remaining 347 tons returned to the jig with 400 tons of original ore. At .times, this overcrowding became much worse, and the tonnage in circuit grew to enormous proportions. "One of the most important phases in Canada&apos;s relatively rapid development of its metal mining and refining industries was launched in 1928 when the directors of Noranda Mines Limited decided to establish an electrolytic copper refinery ""somewhere in Eastern Canada”. Noranda&apos;s president, J.Y. Murdoch, had already evolved the company&apos;s ""mine to market"" policy and was determined to prove the economic feasibility of refining Noranda copper in Canada. The time appeared to be ripe as buoyant business conditions continued into 1929. In addition, proven ore reserves at the Horne Mine in northwest Quebec had virtually tripled and the price of copper had reached a healthy 15 cents per pound. Letters Patent incorporating the company bearing the date February 6, 1929 had been granted by the Secretary of State in accordance with an application that specified a capital structure of $2 million divided into 20 000 shares with a value of $100 each. Noranda assumed 70% of the original investment in the proposed refinery, while the Nicholas Copper Company of New York (which later became Phelps Dodge Corporation) and British Metal Corporation Ltd. of London, England, each were responsible for 15%. Nicholas Copper Company agreed to supply the design and to supervise the construction of the refinery and British Metal Corporation would act as sales agent and market the refinery&apos;s products."

Recycling of aluminium contained in used aseptic beverage cartons is a difficult task which has nevertheless to be tackled by our modern societies. Techniques have earlier been developed by the paper and pulp industry for the recycling of the board fibres from collected post-consumer beverage cartons. A joint technical feasibility study by Granges and a leading beverage carton producer has dealt with different techniques for handling residues from repulping facilities. The aluminium obtained can be used as raw material for the production of thin gauge foil, thus closing the recycling loop.

Evidence has been found for a (010)a?(111)B[102]a /,11[341]/B crystallographic relationship between the monoclinic a and B phases of plutonium during the a?B transformation. The results of an X-ray diffraction study, where [010] fiber textured a samples were used in the absence of suitable single crystals indicate that the (OIO)a planes become (111)B planes upon transformation under near-equilibrium conditions. The transformation strain along the fiber axis, which was the [010] direction, was measured dila-tomekically; the measured 8.5 pct expansion compares favorably with the 8.44 pct expansion in the in-terplanar spacing represented by the (010)a?(111)B relationship. From plots of the atom positions in each of the related planes, a correspondence was deduced between the [102]a, direction and the [341]B direction. Further analysis of the two lattice structures in the light of this relationship revealed a rotation about the [102] direction of 1 deg 43 min and a slight shearing in this same direction of about 30 min. THIS paper discusses the (B crystal structure of plutonium and the orientation relationship existing between the monoclinic a and B phases during the a?ß transformation. The kinetics of the a?ß and (3 — a transformations have received extensive consideration, and because of the crystallographic complexity of these phases, the question of the mechanisms by which these transformations occur is especially intriguing. Nelson and Shyne1 evaluated the existing experimental evidence and concluded, from the indirect evidence available, that both the ß ? a and a ? ß transformations occur by a martensitic process. Their data reveal the anisotropic nature of these transformations which suggests the existence of specific crystallographic relationships between the parent and product phases. In this paper, we are concerned with the confirmation of the existence of such a relationship resulting from the a ? ß transformation and the derivation of the crystallographic details necessary to specify it. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS X-ray diffraction and dilatometric data were obtained from samples of a plutonium having a [010] fiber texture. These cylindrical specimens, approximately 1 cm in diam, were prepared by transforming the ß phase to a under the influence of a uniaxially applied compressive load.&apos; The [0l0] direction is parallel to the direction of applied stress; it is also perpendicular to the (010) planes. This correspondence between the plane normal and the direction having the same indices is, in the monoclinic a plutonium structure, restricted solely to this (010)[010] combination. Such a specimen was mounted in an evacuated, elevated temperature specimen holder on an X-ray dif-fractometer so that the diffracting surface was perpendicular to the fiber axis. The a diffraction pattern, Fig. 1, taken at about 115ºC, revealed the predominance of the (020) reflection. This monoclinic, P 21/rn space group yields no (0k0) reflections when k is odd. The temperature was raised slowly to 160°C to effect the complete transformation to the phase; then it was lowered to 120°C so that a diffraction pattern of the ß could be obtained near the a = ß equilibrium temperature for direct comparison with the a at the same temperature.
