Measuring the specific gravity of a pulp in concentrating plants is a relative, y simple procedure, but the desired accuracy is often difficult to attain. Many plants use the system of weighing a known volume of the pulp on a scale. In many cases, this method is quite accurate, but obtaining a true sample presents quite a problem. This is especially true when the pulp tends to froth, the solids settle rapidly, or the flow is fast at the point of sampling. There is also the problem of the operator neglecting to take the sample because of duties elsewhere, or, if everything Is apparently running smoothly, he assumes the pulp density is also all right. In 1952, the Pine Creek plant of Union Carbide Nuclear Company began working on a better method for measuring and controlling pulp density. After an extensive investigation of different methods for measuring the specific gravity of moving pulps, the Research Department decided that the bubble tube method appeared to be the simplest and most promising for our applications. It consists of two bubble tubes, of different lengths, submersed in a pulp. Low pressure air is supplied to, the two tubes through sight bubblers to maintain approximately equal volume of air to each bubble tube. The bubble tubes are also connected to a differential manometer, one to each side. Therefore, knowing the vertical distance between the outlets of the bubble tubes, the manometere can be calibrated to measure directly the specific gravity of the pulp. Clinoptilolite zeolite may offer attractive, cost-effective alternatives for remedial cleanup of old minesites, smelters and other sites with heavy metal contamination. Previous research demonstrates the relatively strong affinity of clinoptilolite for numerous metals and clinoptilolite displays a particularly strong affinity for lead (Loizidou and Townsend, 1987), one of the most toxic and problematic heavy metals. Since clinoptilolite can also selectively absorb some radionuclides and organic compounds, it may offer practical solutions to a wide variety of environmental problems.

The development of the Yallourn East Field brown coal open cut has involved the adoption of novel investigational programs into coal qual- ity. For example, weighted average coal property statistics for key proper- ties are determined by using a unique blend of traditional and 3-dimensional geostatistical estimation. Predicted property values are made freely available from the mainframe computer in the form of kriged esti- mates of 60 000 tonne coal blocks. Geostatistical predictions are being incorporated within the Mincom/Intergraph CADD system which is used for mine design. Key properties relating to coal type, moisture, and ash have been evalu- ated to provide the required data for the design and operation of both the open cut and the power stations as well as the briquette plant.

O trabalho mostra em aplicações práticas a possibilidade de incluir a filosofia nos sistemas automatizados em diferentes setores da indústria, logo podendo trazer grandes benefícios através de ações estratégicas com baixo custo de implementação.

Field measurements and theoretical studies have been made of pressure surges—momentary variations in fluid pressure—produced by movement of pipe in mud-filled boreholes. Pressure measurements were recorded by five pressure gauges located at various positions in the borehole. An important positive pressure peak was found to occur as the casing moved with maximum velocity. Important negative peaks were found as the casing was lifted from the slips and as brakes were applied to stop pipe movement. A rigorously formulated theory has successfully predicted the sequence and magnitudes of these positive and negative surges and has established a basis for understanding how they occur. Both the measurements and theory indicate that the most important pressure surge is usually due to viscous drag of the flowing mud. The theory of viscous-drag pressure surges has been approximated by simplified graphs and calculation procedures to facilitate ready use in field operations. Comparison of measured results with those predicted by the simplified theory shows that the magnitude of this surge can be predicted accurately. INTRODUCTION It is widely recognized that raising or lowering pipe in a fluid-filled borehole produces momentary variations in fluid pressure, commonly called pressure surges. Both negative (or "swabbing") surges and positive (or "fracturing") surges may occur. In 1934, Cannon1 measured the negative surges and showed that they could be large enough to cause flow of formation fluids into the well-bore and, in extreme cases, lead to blowout conditions. Later, Coins2 measured the positive surges associated with lowering pipe. His results and subsequent field operations strikingly demonstrated that pressure surges could be an important factor in some cases of lost returns. In addition, although the evidence is less clear than in the case of blowouts and lost returns, other investigators 3, 4 feel that pressure surges probably play a part in many instances of minor gas cutting, salt-water flow and other hole trouble. The importance of pressure surges in drilling operations led naturally to attempts to explain the physical causes, nature and magnitude of the surges. Cardwell5 was the first to publish a theory which allowed the quantitative prediction of momentary pressure variations. He assumed that the drilling fluid was a 300-cp Newtonian fluid in turbulent flow. Most field muds have a considerably lower viscosity and are generally believed to be Bingham plastic in nature.6 However, card-well's results were useful because they were presented in a form convenient for field use and, in some cases, gave a reasonably accurate predicted value for the maximum pressure surge. Subsequently, Ormsby7 published a more comprehensive theory of pressure surges. He discussed both laminar and turbulent flow and considered the theory of mud-bypass devices for reducing pressure surges. As a consequence of his more rigorous approach, his results were more accurate but more complex and difficult to use. Further, both Ormsby and Cardwell considered only the pressure surge arising from viscous drag of the moving mud. Clark later published idealized graphs of surges and presented equations for predicting their magnitudes. In addition to pressure variations arising from viscous drag, he considered those caused by inertial effects. His theory was in this respect more complete than those of Cardwell and Ormsby, although he did not discuss pressures due to breaking of the gel. Furthermore, his equations, while not exceptionally complicated, were too complex for ready use at a drilling location. One difficulty common to all three theories is that none was tested rigorously by direct comparison with measured pressure surges. Their accuracy, therefore, could, not be demonstrated. Further, the two theories based on most realistic assumptions (Ormsby and Clark) required the solution of one or more rather complex algebraic equations. The research described in this paper was undertaken to supplement that described and to overcome some of the difficulties noted. It seemed obvious that a fully satisfactory study of pressure surges should encompass three main phases. 1. A valid theory useful in all field situations must be developed. This theory must be based upon realistic assumptions, must be formulated rigorously and should lead to clear concepts whereby the nature of pressure surges can be easily understood. 2. The theory, however complex and involved, ultimately must be presented in simplified form for convenient field use. This may involve extensive machine computations and the use of figures and empirical equations. 3. The accuracy of the simplified equations must be established by comparing measured pressure surges with those predicted by the theory. These must agree both in their characteristic nature and in magnitude. 'This means that careful measurements of surges occurring in actual field operations must be made.

Introduction The season of 1927, from the point of view of mining development in the area west of Rouyn, was quite satisfactory. Serious prospecting and development' were undertaken over quite a large area, though the results in the matter of discovering new deposits of economic importance were rather disappointing. A large amount of systematic prospecting and geological mapping was carried out in the course of the work, and a considerable body of information collected. A widespread occurrence of sulphide mineralization was noted, chiefly near bodies of older gabbro. The frequent occurrence of pyrrhotite in or near which local concentrations of chalcopyrite were localized, lends support to the idea that such older sulphides as pyrite and pyrrhotite are relatively easy of replacement by chalcopyrite. From the prospector's viewpoint, areas near the contacts of masses of older gabbro are favourable prospecting ground, and pyrite and pyrrhotite mineralization are favourable indications that massive chalcopyrite may be found where it has completely replaced such sulphides. Pyrrhotite being magnetic is easily located, even where drift covered, by the use of such convenient instruments as the dip-needle and the magnetometer. It is suggested that pyrrhotite bodies, when located, be thoroughly prospected because of the fairly strong probability that they may show replacement by the more valuable chalcopyrite.

The metallurgical balance is a tool usually applied in the mining industry. The final result is used for different objectives. All the existing software for the calculation of the metallurgical balance fits the numbers in such way that a logical correspondence between the input and output materials exist. Nevertheless, the accuracy of the metallurgical balance strongly depends on the quality of the input data. Division El Teniente of Codelco Chile has been optimizing the metallurgical balance system the last 14 years. As well, it has participated in the development of corporate norms to optimize the operations of sampling and weighting systems. As a consequence, the precision and the accuracy of the metallurgical balance have been improved in a significant way. Also the understanding of process variability was enhanced. The improvements have allowed Codelco to discover and minimize hidden losses and to better support top management decisions. The present paper describes the main aspect of the continuous improvement process.

This resume will be presented at the Pittsburg Meeting of the Institute. Discussion is invited, by either members or non-members of the Institute. Summary of Researches and Conclusions The main objects of this investigation were to determine, from measurements taken at representative rail mills, the present American practice regarding the temperatures at which rails are rolled; to demonstrate the ease and accuracy with which such temperatures may be measured, without interfering in any way with the manufacture of the product; to find out what the "shrinkage clause" in rail specifications really means; and, finally, to determine some of the physical properties of rail steels, particularly those of interest in manufacture, some of which seem to be insufficiently known as yet. 1. Ingot Temperatures.-Measurements made in four mills show that ingots for rails are rolled at temperatures ranging from 1,075° to 1,150° C. (1,965° to 2,100° F.), and that, in a series of 20 to 40 ingots, the variation in temperature from one ingot to another is only 10° to 20° C. 2. Finishing Temperatures.-Rails are finished at temperatures ranging broadly from 880° to-1,050° C. (1,615 to 1,922° F.), but usually ranging within 50° C. of 935° C., and occasionally above 1,100° C.

From the first day of new miner training until the day they retire, mine workers will experience changes due to the normal aging process. It is an unfortunate fact of life that many age-related changes result in diminished physical, sensory, or cognitive capabilities. Of course, workers also gain a tremendous wealth of experience, knowledge, and insight as they age, making them a vitally important resource for their company. Effective leveraging of this precious resource requires both an appreciation of the changes that occur with age and an understanding of methods that can be used to reduce the injury risk that may result. The purpose of this training is to provide the information necessary to accomplish these objectives. Aging workers may not necessarily have a higher injury risk overall; however, the effects of a musculoskeletal injury (MSI) on older workers may be more extreme. MSHA data show that not only does the percentage of MSIs increase when workers are over age 30, so does the number of days lost per injury, as shown in the graph below [MSHA 2005]. [ ] Protecting the safety and health of aging workers requires matching the demands of the job to worker capabilities. This means reducing or eliminating risk factors for injuries, such as heavy lifting, awkward postures, static postures, repetitive movements, and/or vibration exposures. In other cases, it may mean improving visibility or streamlining processes. Designing jobs to accommodate the changing capabilities of older workers will not only reduce injury risk for older workers, it will have the added benefit of protecting younger employees as well.

Lignocellulosic fibers obtained from plants like cotton, flax, hemp, sisal, jute and many others are natural materials used, since long time, in basic items such as textile, baskets, roofing and carpets. These traditional natural fibers as well as some new ones are nowadays replacing synthetic fibers as composite reinforcement owing to environmental advantages. The heterogeneous characteristic of lignocellulosic fibers is, however, a limitation for application in composites. The buriti fiber, extracted from a tropical plant tree, is recently being investigated as a possible reinforcement for polymeric matrix composites but no complete information exists regarding its mechanical behavior. The objective of this work was then to carry out a statistical analysis on the mechanical properties? uniformity of buriti fibers. By precise dimensional measurements in association with tensile tests, it was found that the mechanical properties depend on the range of the fibers? dimension.

A nondestructive procedure for measuring electrodeposit porosity has been developed which records the location and number of deposit defects including pores, pits, and voids. The procedure involves the passage of an X-ray beam through the deposit-substrate system onto suitable film. The defects are recorded as images on the film. Variables studied included intensity and spectra of the X-ray beam, composition and thickness of deposit and substrate, film type and developing procedure, and limits for detecting defects. At an X-ray tube voltage of 40 kv, pores several mils thick were easily detected in copper-nickel specimens more than 20 mils thick. To illustrate the utility of the procedure, the effect of substrate oxidation and of current density on electrodeposit porosity was briefly studied.

On December 8th of last year, the new St. Clair River tunnel was holed-through to Port Huron, Michigan. The tunnel, commissioned by the Canadian National Railway, was needed to replace an existing tunnel that had been built between 1889 and 1890, and had remained in continuous operation until the new tunnel was opened to traffic in April of this year. The original tunnel, after more than 100 years of service, was still structurally sound, but was too small to accommodate the double stacked container cars and other advances in the railroad's equipment that had developed over the years. Prior to the construction of the first tunnel, all freight was barged across the river. It was a slow, expensive process, which in winter was sometimes impossible. The nineteenth century tunnel was built in twenty months, utilizing two shields that mined to the middle from each end. The lining, which is still in excellent condition, consisted of bolted, cast iron segments, with an O.D. of 6.4 meters. It was the first sub-aqueous tunnel built in North American, and it's use of compressed air under the river and hydraulic power on the shields may also have been firsts. The digging was done by hand, and the muck hauled out by mule drawn wagons. Boulders and methane gas were reported to be a constant problem during the drive, and compressed air sickness was common, but when the two shields came together in August of 1890, it was reported that the alignment was within 6 mm. The new St. Clair River Tunnel was constructed for basically the same reason as the original. The larger equipment which the railroad is using today would not fit through the old tunnel, and once more they were forced to ferry the cars across the river.

In the blast furnace, the reduction of iron oxide and gasification of coke occur simultaneously. It is well accepted that the gasification reaction controls the simultaneous reaction. Therefore, it is important to develop highly reactive carbonaceous materials. It is also known that the reaction is accelerated catalytically with the addition of some materials. In the present work, the catalytic effect of iron, nickel and CaO on the gasification of graphite and coke was examined. The catalytic effect of iron, nickel and CaO on the reaction rate of graphite was noticed The effect was larger at lower temperature. At 1373 K, the effect almost vanished. The effect was larger in the order of CaO, iron and nickel. The reaction rate of de-ashed coke increased by the addition of iron and nickel. The effect of iron was larger than that of nickel. The effect was larger at higher temperature, which was contrary to the case of graphite. The reactive surface area increased also by the addition. Therefore, the catalytic effect on reaction rate might be attributable to the increase in the reactive surface area.

"A time-dependent model for electron beam melting and refining (EBMR) of different metals and alloys is developed. The model is 3D axi-symmetrical and an adapted numerical scheme of Pismen-Rekftord type is applied. The developed computer program computes the thermal fields in the metal ingots during EBMR process as well as the dynamics of the thermal streams and the geometry of the molten metal pools. Calculated results for different regimes of EBMR of titanium are obtained and discussed in the paper. Experiments are performed and impurities' concentration data are presented. Simulation results are compared with experimental data and are used for optimization of the EBMR process in the case of Ti.IntroductionElectron beam melting and refining (EBMR) has an important role in the special electrometallurgy[ 1-6] and it is approved for obtaining of pure titanium [7]. EBMR of metals and alloys is being recognized as a competitive and even the single method for obtaining new materials for all areas of human activity.The principal scheme of the EBMR drip process is shown in Fig.1. A thin layer of molten metal is formed on the front part of the feeding rod during the e-beam processing and generated droplets fall into the molten pool in the crucible where the ingot is formed. The refining is mainly realized at the boundary liquid metal - vacuum. There are three zones in EBMR (Fig.1) - on the front part of the feeding rod (zone I in Fig.1 ), on the surface of the generated droplets (zone II in Fig.1) and the surface of the molten pool in the water-cooled copper crucible (zone III in Fig.1)."

The disturbed natural rock mass tends to equilibrium state accompanying with non-equilibrium evolution process which has significant influence on the long-term stability of engineering structure. The deformation development in the non-equilibrium evolution is determined by two intrinsic processes, trend to equilibrium and damage development, which can be illustrated by evolution of excavated tunnel. Thus the creep and damage must be taken into account in study of non-equilibrium evolution process. Within Rice’s irreversible thermodynamics with internal state variable (ISV), the conjugate force function which equals to zero is a convex surface which divide the stress space into two parts, called equilibrium and nonequilibrium stress space respectively. The concept of effective stress of non-equilibrium has been proposed, in which the stress difference (d - d ) are the effective driving forces of non-equilibrium evolution process with hardening and damage effective. The formulations of inelastic strain rate and energy dissipation rate have been recast in the form of effective stresses. The inelastic complementary energy (ICE) is proposed to measure intensity of non-equilibrium evolution of material system. The specific equations of conjugated forces and kinetic equations of internal state variables are presented. The ICE and rate of energy dissipation are all calculated to be used to evaluate long-term stability of geo-engineering. The results show that rate of energy dissipation may be more convenience and flexible than ICE for internal state variable constitutive equation of rock mass.

Dislocation arrays and substructures were studied in cadmium doped zinc crystals using a newly devised etching technique. Cadmium precipitates delineating the dislocations were revealed by etching a surface closely parallel to the (0001) slip plane. Cinephotomicrography of the continuous etching process revealed the three-dimensional aspects of dislocations in the bulk crystal. Dislocation etch patterns were studied in both deformed and annealed crystals after suitable aging at room temperature. The effect of annealing was evidenced by a rearrangement of the dislocations into low-angle boundaries and hexagonal networks. ETCH pit techniques have been used extensively to study dislocations in both deformed and annealed bulk metal crystals. Ideally one hopes to obtain a one-to-one correspondence between the etch pits and the points of emergence of the dislocations at the surface. One then attempts to deduce the way in which dislocations are arranged in the bulk crystal from the arrangement of etch pits on the surface. It is clear that one can obtain only limited information of the dislocation configurations inside the crystal from etch pit studies of single surfaces. Considerably more information is obtained if one is able to follow the course of the dislocations through the crystal using progressive etching technique. Techniques of this sort were used by Gilmanl to study dislocations on the slip planes of NaCl crystals and by Damiano and Tint2 to study dislocation arrangement in zinc crystals grown from the melt. The present paper makes use of a technique first described by Tint and Damiano3 to observe and continuously record the dislocation structures which appear while a crystal surface was being progressively etched. Studies were made on cleaved (0001) surfaces to reveal the dislocations along their length on the surface closely parallel to the slip plane. The technique for revealing segments of dislocations along their length by etching is well known. Wilsdorf and Kuhlmann-wilsdorf4 revealed disloca- tions along their length in aluminum containing a few percent copper, when precipitates segregated along the dislocations. The technique was used by Low and Guard5 to study dislocation configurations on the slip plane in Fe-Si alloys containing carbon. In the present work the technique was applied to zinc containing cadmium since it was shown by Gil-man6 that a cadmium-rich phase could be made to precipitate from supersaturated solutions along dislocations in zinc. Segments of dislocations delineated by the precipitates were revealed by etching a surface prepared by cleaving the crystal. The three-dimensional nature of dislocations and substructures was thus studied from the cinephotomicro-graphic record of the continuous etching process. EXPERIMENTAL Single crystals of zinc containing the order of 0.1 pct Cd were prepared by slowly lowering a graphite crucible containing the melt through a temperature gradient of 15°C per cm at a rate of 1.5 X 10-3 cm per sec. "As grown" crystals were aged for periods of 1 month at room temperature, then cleaved in liquid nitrogen, and etched according to the procedure used by Gilman.' The etchant containing 32 g of CrO3, 6 g of hydrated Na2SO3 in 100 ml of water behaved as a chemical polish for zinc and etch pits were produced at the site of precipitates or inclusions. After the precipitates or inclusions were removed from the surface, the etch pits left behind were eventually polished smooth. This behavior enabled one to continuously observe the surface while the specimen was immersed in the etchant. Best results were obtained when the specimen surface was vertical and the reaction products of polishing were continuously removed by gravitational convection. Some crystals were heavily deformed in excess of 25 pct strain, others were lightly deformed the order of a few pct by compression such that the deformation occurred essentially by basal glide. Some crystals were etched immediately after deformation, others were allowed to age at room temperature for several weeks prior to etching. Heavily deformed crystals were annealed at various temperatures and etched on the cleavage plane immediately after annealing, others were allowed to age at room temperature for several weeks prior to etching. In previous reports by Hausel et. al., (1979 a, b, and c), Leighton and McCallum (1979), and McCallum (1974;1979), several exploration procedures were examined as to their effectiveness in locating kimberlite intrusives in northern Colorado and southeastern Wyoming, where approximately 90 kimberlites have been recognized within 5 districts (Figure I). Briefly, geological mapping and stream sediment sampling for indic- ative heavy minerals of kimberlite (pyrope garnet, chrome diopside, and magnesian ilmenite) proved to be the two most effective methods in isolating kimberlite occurrences within the granitic terrain of Colorado and Wyoming (Hausel et. al., 1979 a, b, and c; Leighton and McCallum, 1979). Where a kimberlite intrusive is deeply weathered, remote sensing using color and color infrared aerial photography may be a potential reconnaissance tool in kimberlite exploration. The kimberlitic eluvium supports thicker grassy vegetation, and at least one species of grass (the Bluebunch Wheatgrass) is found to grow only within the eluvium.
