INTRODUCTION The work described here refers to the Genesee River Interceptor Southeast Project. This project is a part of the Combined Sewer Overflow Abatement Program, Phase I, for the Rochester Pure Water District, Rochester, New York. Our contract required the design of a 13,200-feet long main tunnel, 14 feet finished diameter, approximately 100-120 Feet below ground; drop shafts and diversion tunnels to deliver surface flow to the main tunnel; a gate chamber whereby the main tunnel is dropped 35 feet, and provision made for connection to the future tunnel in Phase II, as well as a host of other surface structures. Cross sectional dimensions for the structures involved varied from 16 feet circular to a 20'x50' horseshoe, in a competent rock formation consisting of Lockport Dolomite and Rochester Shale. In the construction of a rock tunnel, the problems of the tunnel designers are as follows: 1. To evaluate stresses in the rock as a result of excavation. 2. Design a temporary support system to prevent any rock failure during the period of construction. Design of this temporary support system is empirical. Design loads given by empirical relations are dependent upon the rock quality and size of opening. Temporary support system may either be steel frames closely spaced along the length of tunnel and tied together, in the case of poor rock, or, an even spacing of rock bolts in the case of competent rock. 3. Design a final lining for the service loads. Service loads, in our case of a water-carrying tunnel, are hydrostatic pressure due to ground water, deadweight of lining) pressure of contained water and time dependent rock loading. The constitutive properties of the rock are extremely complex because of discontinuities, pre-existing stresses due to overburden, material symmetries and changes of initial state associated with the process of excavation. The changes of initial state may be changes of stress fields along with the consequent yield of the material or the extension of existing discontinuities.

One major aim of the operation of Aberfoyle's matte fuming pilot plant was to assess refractories performance in the process working vessel, a SIROSMELT furnace. High wear rates were expected and whether these could be tolerated was an important question. During operations a range of refractory types was evaluated in both insulated and water cooled furnace designs. Furnace operations enabled lining wear measurements to be made. Results confirm that existing technology can solve any expected refractory problems. Design aspects that should be included in commercial furnaces are shown.

THE following investigation constitutes a brief resume of the more important binary magnesium alloys from the standpoint of metallographic technique, and the effect of heat treatment on structure and properties. The comparative newness of the subject justifies this procedure as a preface to a more detailed study of each individual series of alloys. The work was started with the idea of practical application in the industry rather than as a theoretical investigation. The alloy compositions studied were selected as those most likely to show whether heat treatment would produce beneficial results. Furthermore, it was considered satisfactory to use commercial 99.9 per cent. magnesium, the best commercial grade of alloying ingredients, and to limit the time of heat treatment at the expense of incomplete equilibrium. These facts must be kept in mind when examining the results obtained, and the conclusions drawn.

This discussion is restricted to a very specific application of the cyclone - its use as a hydro-cyclone in the cleaning of fine coal. It is hoped that the development of the present data will assist in the further elucidation of existing qualitative models, and also in an enhanced application of the hydrocyclone and provide a base for further research. Discussed are the mechanisms of gravity separation in hydro-cyclones, test procedures, experimental observations, and industrial applications from these studies. Within the general area of unit operations, a considerable effort has been expended in theoretical and empirical research associated with cyclone operations. The motivation involves the industrial requirement for devices and techniques to manipulate small particles at low operating costs, a situation required in coal preparation. There are good reasons why the cyclone helps to satisfy this demand, because it combines operational simplicity (no moving parts) with versatility and high throughput capacity per unit area. The cyclone is one of the most widely applied tools in the process technologies. There are areas for potential cyclone application which have been only meagerly explored or not considered at all. This discussion is restricted to a very specific application of the cyclone - its use as a hydrocyclone in the cleaning of fine coal. It represents an initial presentation of a more comprehensive report. Coal preparation can appropriately claim the hydrocyclone since most of its predominant industrial uses have originated in this area and have spread into other applications, including the broad field of ore dressing, the petroleum industry, chemical processing, nuclear engineering and food technology. There is one operational principle common in all cyclones: A fluid is tangentially introduced into a cylindrical or conical container under pressure. A predominantly irrotational flow field1 is established within the cyclone (Fig. 1). The uniqueness of this flow is indicated by the variation in tangential velocity across the cyclone radius, which reaches a maximum a short distance from the center and decays toward the cyclone wall. In contrast, the tangential velocity in a centrifuge increases uniformly toward the wall. Usually two products are discharged from the cyclone. They differ in that one discharge consists predominantly of that portion of the feed fluid which moves along the wall axially away from the feed inlet, while the other consists predominantly of fluid spiralling along the central regions of the cyclone, in an axial direction opposite to that of the wall current. Fig. 2 indicates these discharge points schematically. The latter product may be termed the vortex-product, since it is discharged with the central vortex-current. In the case of conical cyclones, the former product may be referred to as the apex-product. Although the names "over- and underflow" are widely used, many cyclones are operated from extreme angular positions thus the proposed terms are less ambiguous. The cyclone feed fluid can be laden with solid particles or nonmiscible fluid drops. Such a feed component is discharged from the cyclone, after some residence time, into the one or the other product. Yet, the orifice through which a particle will leave the cyclone is dependent upon a number of factors. These factors, in a statistical sense, determine the path of the particle within the cyclone. Thus, different separation phenomena are possible and different process results attainable by the controllable variation of the particle path. It is then, to attain a fuller understanding of this particle path, to which this study is ultimately directed. It is anticipated that the detailed study of the data being developed will allow further elucidation of existing qualitative models. However, the development of a quantitative description of cyclone operation in terms of a mechanism is not currently feasible. The flow conditions in a cyclone are not fully understood even for a pure fluid, without the added complexity of the inclusion of multiple size-density particles. It is hoped that the development of the present data will also assist in an enhanced application of the hydro-cyclone and provide a base for further research. It is now well established that in the majority of cementation processes used industrially, the rate of reaction can be described in terms of the mass transport from the bulk of the solution to the deposition sites on the metallic surface. Thus it should be possible to design cementation equipment from a knowledge of the flow situation in the equipment, and of absolute kinetic data. One way of obtaining such absolute data is by the use of the rotating disc geometry; this geometry is particularly suitable for a detailed study of cementation reactions. In spite of the similar mass transfer mechanism, cementation processes differ from other ionic transport processes in at least two respects. The presence of an attached deposit generally has a significant enhancing effect on the reaction rate; and side reactions involving oxygen and/or hydrogen ions can completely change the course of a reaction. Investigation of these peculiarities is necessary for a complete understanding of the process; since they cannot be isolated from the basic mass transport mechanism, close control of experimental conditions is essential. It has been found that the enhancement in deposition rate persists even when the deposit reaches a thickness several times that of the transport boundary layer thickness on the smooth surface. An explanation of the enhancement in reaction rate is proposed.

MULSIM/NL (multiple seams, nonlinear) is a new U.S. Bureau of Mines boundary-element-method (BEM) program for calculating stresses and displacements (is., convergence) in coal mines or thin, tabular rnetalliferous veins. This manual gives detailed operating instructions for MULSIM/NL and illustrates its use with several practical examples. While this manual concentrates on the practical aspects of actually running and using MULSIM/NL, another companion report titled "MULSIM/NL- Theoretical and Programmer's Manual" provides mathematical and programming details to those engineers and programmers who need to fully understand the FORTRAN program or desire to alter and enhance it. MULSIMINL analyzes one to four parallel seams that have any orientation with respect to the Earth's surface. Three main features distinguish MULSIM/NL from its predecessors: (1) nonlinear material models, (2) multiple mining steps, and (3) comprehensive energy release and strain energy computations. MULSIM/NL has six material models for the in-seam material including (1) linear elastic for coal, (2) strain softening, (3) elastic plastic, (4) bilinear hardening, (5) strain hardening, and (6) linear elastic for gob. The multiple mining step capability enables the user to simulate a changing mine geometry. Finally, MULSIM/NL performs comprehensive energy release rate calculations.

A two-part study was conducted to understand the factors affecting respirable dust generation potential or dustiness of coal seams. In the first part, the data from three prior comprehensive laboratory studies was analyzed to establish quantitative relationships between respirable dust generation potential and coal characteristics. This analysis indicates that respirable dust generation rate is positively correlated with Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI), fuel ratio (fixed carbodvolatile matter), Vitrinke Reflectance (VR), and Level of Organic Metamorphism (LOM). In the second part, specially-designed single breakage experiments were conducted to determine the primary dust generation potential of 17 coal samples obtained from four continuous miner sections, three longwall sections, and the Penn State Coal Data Bank. The single breakage study indicates that primary dust generation rate is positively correlated with fixed carbon content, fuel ratio (fixed carbon/volatile matter), VR, and LOM. Since VR and LOM are strongly influenced by the process of coalification, differences in respirable dust generation rates in different coal seams may be explained by the thermal metamorphism of sedimentary organic matter during subsurface burial.

This study deals with underground mines and ground control and the prediction of seats strength characteristics based upon ultrasonic logging. Exploration drill holes, both rotary and core holes are used for proving coal reserves and determining mining parameters. Drill hole cores can be subjected to geologic study and geotechnical evaluation. In addition, the use of geophysical logging techniques is well established in determining certain strata characteristics and ground parameters. Since the characterization of the rock mass in mines remains insufficient in most cases, the idea of possibly characterizing the strength parameters without expensive core retrieval and laboratory testing is very attractive. The elastic properties of the rock can be deduced from measurement of the sonic velocity if the density is known. Through the use of in-hole geophysical density logging combined with an ultrasonic logging tool, the estimation of strata properties is possible. An investigation was conducted at two Indiana underground coal mines using geologic logging, geophysical logging, ultrasonic logging and laboratory strength testing to establish the strength properties of the roof rock. A specialized ultrasonic logging tool with one transmitter and two receivers enables nearly continuous readings along the length of the hole. The results of correlating portions of the data are presented. It is anticipated that the ultrasonic logging will be a supplemental tool for extending laterally the strata characteristics obtained from the existing program to surrounding areas. This may be obtained from the relatively inexpensive logging data obtained by ultrasonic logging.

"With the growth of large scale surface mining operations, waste disposal and stability of waste dumps pose a challenging problem to engineers. Vibrations due to blasting operations proximal to these dumps further complicates dump design. Many dumps which are statically stable may become unstable due to the effects of blasting vibrations.A joint project between CANMET and Smoky River Coal Ltd. has been initiated to study the dynamic stability of waste dumps. The study involves development of an analytical algorithm combined with field monitoring to assess dump performance.Another objective of the study is to provide baseline data for a vibration attentuation relationships for sedimentary rock (coal) environments: most studies to date are for base metal mines. The effect of dump thickness on vibration response is also addressed.The key objective of the study is to present a methodology for assessing the dynamic stability of waste dumps. Implicit in this methodology are a number of assumptions concerning vibration attenuation in sedimentary rock environments, and response of the dump material to induced vibration. Where possible, these assumptions have been compared with monitoring data as a check on their validity."

Reclamation of surface mines is a crucial environmental issue and a key challenge to the worldwide mining industry. One of the goals of reclamation is to ensure that the area is left in a condition permitting safe future use. Hence, the reconstruction of open pits, waste piles and tailings dams must satisfy appropriate geotechnical stability and safety conditions for the planned use. Landscaping in the final stages is highly relevant as the topography around the mining areas is sometimes dramatically modified by ore extraction. The reclamation strategies must be applied not only after ore exhaustion, but also during its extraction. This is a sound business strategy that leads to considerable environmental benefits and increased security of the mining operations.

Downstream value-adding is a strategic issue for a country like Australia, which has a resources-driven sector of a scale that has significant impact on the national economy. The question of why producers are not doing more to ævalue-addÆ is often asked. In Australia this debate takes place within the context of: an era of unprecedented growth in demand for resources driven by the rapid urbanisation of China, India and others;impending legislation and uncertainty around carbon pricing;rapidly rising energy costs;significant supply-side shortages including infrastructure, skills and manufacturing capacity; andsignificant industry consolidation of primary resource producers with commensurate improvements in market power.There are several examples of resource-based industries which have developed their business along the complete value-chain; for example large oil and gas producers successfully span upstream and downstream operations including refining and petro-chemicals as well as retail distribution of fuel and other products. Relevant frameworks that provide insight and understanding into the strategic issues around value-adding are reviewed and examples of the application of these frameworks to companies and industries which have successfully adopted a strategy of integrating along the value-chain, as well as those players who have focused on parts of the value-chain are presented. The issues around value-adding in Australia are then reviewed with reference to these frameworks and it is concluded that the issue is a conflict between the objective companies who wish to maximise financial value versus the desire of governments to increase economic benefits. An approach to aligning these objectives is proposed.

The coal stripping project of the Edna Coal Company in Routt County, Colorado, near Oak Creek, is not greatly different than many other such projects in the United States-with two rather significant exceptions. The project is at an altitude of approximately 8,000 feet, and the topography is that characteristic of mountainous terrain. The first exception-that of high altitude-makes year round operation a challenge. The second exception-that of rugged topography makes the haulage of materials a difficult task.

The Bureau of Mines made small-scale continuous tests and large-scale commercial plant tests of a calcareous fluorspar ore near Cave-In-Rock, Ill., to determine if the application of the lignin-fluoride process of fluorspar flotation would be industrially feasible for treatment of fluorspar ores, and also to compare the lignin-fluoride process with the quebracho process, which is the method currently used for concentrating calcareous fluorspar ores. The small-scale continuous tests yielded fluorspar concentrates analyzing 93.6 percent CaF2 with a recovery of 87.6 percent of the total fluorspar in the ore. In large-scale commercial plant tests, a fluorspar concentrate analyzing 93.3 percent CaF2 with a recovery of 78.0 percent was produced by the quebracho method. About 86.0 percent of the fluorspar was recovered in a metallurgical-grade fluorspar concentrate from the lignin-fluoride circuit which analyzed 89.9 percent CaF2? with a much simpler flowsheet than that in the current commercial application.

Like many industries the coal mining industry has, since the beginning of this century, undergone many changes. Technological advances and the increasing demand for fossil fuels have introduced new mining methods and techniques which allow the extraction of thicker and deeper coal seams at higher rates of production. Most new methods of mining (or for that matter any other processes) introduce problems which the engineers of the industry are expected to face and resolve. Unfortunately, spontaneous combustion has plagued the coal mining industry since the first attempts to mine coal, and is no doubt partly responsible for the reputation that coal mining is a hazardous industry. The financial loss and toll of human lives due to the occurrence of spontaneous combustion of coal in coal mines is enormous, if not incalculable. Its occurrence today is less likely to claim lives, due to both improved methods of working and in the detection of spontaneous combustion sites.

A package of bench design programs is being publicly released by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). These programs are designed to provide a probabilistic estimate of the likelihood that various widths of catch bench will be retained. Program modules address the mechanisms of plane, plane step path, and wedge failure. Results are drawn from statistical and geostatistical descriptions of fracture characteristics and other input parameters, and reported as the statistical chance that a given width of catch bench will survive, that is, that a catch bench will remain wide enough to catch rolling and sliding material and prevent such material from posing hazards to miners operating below. The capabilities and application of this software are demonstrated through a case example. Comparing bench width estimates obtained using geologic data with actual widths is a key step in verifying that a program is appropriate for particular site conditions and that proper statistical descriptions of fracture parameters for that site have been developed. Such verification efforts improve confidence, and hence usefulness, of this method for designing future slope benches. Development and release of these programs appears particularly timely given recent progress in photoanalysis methods, which promise to greatly reduce the cost of collecting fracture data.

The Plant Control and Data Logging System for the Loy Yang Open Cut (LYOC) is part of a control and communications network designed to provide a high level of surveillance of open cut plant and facilitate the efficient co- ordination of operations and plant maintenance. The computer system selected utilises a central dual mini-computer and multiple microcomputer data transmission network ,linked to the plant controllers using distributed, microcomputer based remote data collectors or outstations. Several aspects of the computer system are outlined.

"Fine zinc concentrates tend to become sticky when roasted in a fluidized-bed reactor. The oxidation of high-purity ZnS powders and ZnS concentrates with different particle sizes were studied in terms of phase changes and particle morphologies. The sample materials were directly oxidized to ZnO in a roasting process performed over 700°C. Zinc oxide particles with diameters less than 0.5 ìðé formed at 700°C; the particle size increased by grain growth at 900°C. The coarse ZnS concentrate formed the oxysulfate ZnO2ZnS04 when roasted at 700°C; the sulfate transformed to ZnO at higher temperature.1. IntroductionRoasting is an important step in zinc extractive metallurgy because more than 80% of the world's zinc is produced from zinc sulfide concentrates using the roast-leach-electrowinning [1,2]. Currently, zinc concentrates with a finer particle size distribution are used to enhance recovery rate. However, the finer zinc concentrates tend to produce a sticky calcine in a fluidized-bed roaster [3].The factors that affect products in a fluidized-bed roaster include particle size, contaminant, O2 and SO2 partial pressures, and the feeding method of ore to the roaster. This study examined roasting behavior of high-purity ZnS powders and ZnS concentrates with different particle sizes. The phase changes and particle morphologies of the calcine samples producted from theZnS powders were studied."
