"Two recent occurrences in Western metal mines in each of which 3 men were killed due to breathing fumes from explosives, have aroused keen interest among mining men not only as to the exact cause of such accidents, but also as to possible preventive measures.In sinking the forty five degree incline Marsh *haft near Burke, Idaho, on May 13, 1920, a round of holes containing about sixty pounds of 40 per cent gelatin explosive was blasted by the night shift upon leaving at 11:30 P.M. It was customary for the night shift to leave compressed air blowers open at bottom of abaft until the compressor was shut down slightly before midnight. Presumably this was not done on the night of the lath as the fumes were so heavy in the shaft bottom on the morning of the 14th that at about 8 o'clock, Superintendent Bergen and one of the shaft men, on reaching the shaft bottom, were overcome and fell from the bucket into the sump containing about six feet of water; and when two other men went down in the bucket a few minutes later to investigate, one also fell into the sump and the other was barely able to roach the shaft collar. The three bodies were later on recovered from the sump.At 400 P.M., June 10, 1920, at the Dominion Mine, Colville, Washington, a round of 11 holes containing about fifteen pounds of 60 per cent nitro¬glycerine explosive was blasted in a fifty degree raise about fifty feet above the main tunnel level by the shift going off for the night. in this mine it was the practice not to try to blow out the fumes until just before the shift went to work the next morning, Although no work was being done on the night shift, one of the raise men, curious to ascertain the effect of the shots, about 7:45 P.M., wandered into the mine (which was a tunnel only a few hundred feet in length), and was missed by one of his companions about an hour later. When three men tried to remove the body of the inquisitive miner, two of them were also overcome; ultimately these two and the first man were removed from the point at which all were asphyxiated, which was practically at the foot of themaise."

WORK described herein was undertaken with the aim of determining some of the physical-chemical properties of electrolytes suitable for the electrodeposition of pure zirconium metal. In this paper the phase diagram, vapor pressure, and activities in the melt are considered. In a companion paper,' the electrolytic conductivity of some of these melts is reported. The melts studied were mixtures of NaCl and/or KC1 with ZrC1,. Chloride melts were chosen for study because 1) if the electrolyte is to be useful for industrial electrodeposition of zirconium, the chlorides will be preferred to the relatively costly bromides and iodides; 2) fluoride melts were being studied in another laboratory (Horizons Inc., Cleveland); and 3) melts containing oxygen, in any form, are unsuitable for preparation of pure zirconium, because of the great affinity of this metal for oxygen. Unlike electrodeposition from aqueous solution, the fundamental behavior of fused-salt electrolysis is poorly understood. In most cases, such basic electrochemical information as the phase diagram of the melt system, activities in the melt, conductivity, the nature of the current-carrying ions, the equilibrium electrode potentials, and the overvoltage behavior of the electrodes is unknown to the researcher who would develop a new electrodeposition process employing a fused salt. This research project was designed to supply information about some of these basic physical-chemical properties so that an intelligent choice of electrolyte for electrodeposition studies could be made. Experimental The experimental difficulties-encountered in this work result from the properties of zirconium metal and ZrC1,. ZrC1, is a solid which sublimes at 334°C. It is rapidly hydrolyzed by moist air to HC1, ZrOCl,, and ZrO,. Unusual precautions were exercised in this work to prevent hydrolysis of ZrC1, and rigidly to exclude oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, and carbon from the melts under study. These elements are known to react with and contaminate zirconium metal. All melts were studied in vacuum systems, i.e., in the presence of ZrC1, vapor only. The Detroit River Outfall No. 2. is an effluent water conveyance system linking the Detroit Metropolitan Wastewater Treatment Plant to the Detroit River. The 6.4m (21ft) finished diameter tunnel extends 1,890m (6,200ft) east from the bottom of a 91m(300ft) deep, 9.2m (30ft) diameter drop shaft. At the eastern terminus of the tunnel, six Riser Shafts connect the tunnel to diffuser heads on the riverbed. The tunnel runs through a highly fractured Limestone formation capable of producing high levels of groundwater in?ows and Hydrogen Sul?de gas. Control of this water and gas was a theme which ran through the entire Project’s design and construction. This paper will provide an overview of each portion of the Project’s construction, including the Entrance Shaft, Precast Concrete Segments, TBM Tunnel, Pre-Excavation Grouting Methods, and the Riser Shafts.

The rocks and minerals of the moon will be included among the raw materials used to construct a lunar base. The lunar regolith, the fragmental material present on the surface of the Moon, is composed mostly of disaggregated rocks and minerals, but also includes glassy fragments fused together by meteorite impacts. The finer fraction (i.e., < lcm) of the regolith, the soil, is probably the most important portion of the regolith for use at a lunar base. For example, soil can be used in bulk as insulation against cosmic rays, for lunar ceramic and abodes, or for growing plants. However, beneficiation of the soil can provide other feedstocks. For example, the soil contains abundant solar-wind implanted elements, as we1 1 as various minerals, particularly oxide phases, which are of potential economic importance. These components of the soil are sources of oxygen and hydrogen for water and rocket fuel, helium for nuclear energy, and metals such as Fe, Ni, Al, Si, and Ti. The uses of the lunar materials only await a fertile imagination.

Rotas hidrometalúrgicas para o beneficiamento do minério de cobre vem sendo estudadas a fim de substituir o processo tradicional por pirometalurgia. No entanto, o uso de soluções lixiviantes como o ácido sulfúrico e a amônia são considerados ambientalmente desfavoráveis ao processo e descarte. Além disso, durante a lixiviação do cobre também ocorre a lixiviação do ferro. O uso de glicina como agente lixiviante é uma alternativa de baixo impacto ambiental já que é um aminoácido capaz de ser metabolizado por organismos vivos. Na lixiviação, a glicina apresenta a capacidade de formar um complexo quelante apenas com o íon Cu2+. Esse trabalho buscou avaliar a capacidade de lixiviação de um minério de cobre concentrado proveniente do Peru. Para isso, três concentrações de glicina em meio aquoso foram avaliadas nas temperaturas de 25ºC (48 horas de contato) e 60ºC (duas horas de contato). O pH da solução foi mantido entre 10,5 e 11 com adição de hidróxido de sódio. Foi possível lixiviar acima de 30% do cobre usando 0,8M de glicina na solução e em ambas as temperaturas de estudo. Além disso, a lixiviação do ferro ficou abaixo de 0,6% mostrando a seletividade da glicina para o cobre durante a lixiviação.

Mine seals can be remotely constructed in underground coal mines, through vertical boreholes, when direct access to a fire is impossible or considered to be too dangerous. This method has great merit because boreholes can be drilled to specific mine areas and seals can be positioned close to a fire zone. The technology however, can be largely ineffective if the constructed seals do not provide effective barriers to airflow or cannot be used to impound water and other inert materials. Unfortunately, no viable alternatives exist to sealing the entire mine at the ground surface. Full-scale remote mine seal construction research is being conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Lake Lynn Laboratory (LLL). Under this effort, Howard Concrete Pumping Company and GAI Consultants, Inc. have joined forces to evaluate a potentially significant improvement to the current state-of-the-art. This paper will cover development of novel technology for remote mine seal construction, evaluation of the materials used, construction practice, and follow-up testing.

Coromandel Peninsula gold mineralisation has an epithermal style which involves extensive alteration of host rocks and addition of pyrite over large volumes of rock. These altered rocks therefore have high potential for generating acid rock drainage. Natural acid groundwater discharges occur in altered rocks, but not in propylitically altered rock. There is little calcite available in mineralised rocks to neutralise this acid. In contrast, the mesothermal veins of the Otago Schist cause little alteration of the host rock, and that alteration has similar mineralogy to the host rock. Calcite is a common mineral in host and mineralised zones, and sulphides are generally subordinate. Hence acidification of Otago rocks is unlikely. This lack of acidification in Otago facilitates arsenic mobility in solution, up to hundreds of ppm. Arsenic is insoluble under acidic conditions in the Coromandel. Base metals are soluble under acidic conditions of the Coromandel, but they are immobilised by adsorption on to the widespread clay minerals where the solutions are neutralised. Base metals are generally immobile in Otago, but when they are mobilised, adsorption is less effectiveas an attenuation mechanism because clay minerals are rare.

DURING the past few years the Bureau of Mines has been studying hydrogen-sulfide corrosion in the petroleum and natural-gas industries. Early work was confined to investigating the various practical, or operat-ing, factors that control the corrosion reaction when ordinary mild steel is being attacked. In that work it was shown that, if the optimum operating conditions1 are obtainable, . gas containing hydrogen sulfide can be handled at ordinary temperatures without serious corrosion resulting. However, frequently "sour" gas must be handled under other than optimum operating conditions, and combating corrosion then becomes a problem to be considered more during the construction of a system than during its subsequent operation. That is, where economi-cally practicable in such cases the designer will seek to substitute for mild steel other steels or ferrous metals more resistant to corrosion by hydro-gen sulfide. The comparative resistance of various commercial steels and alloy steels to corrosion by hydrogen sulfide at elevated temperatures has been reported systematically by previous investigators,2 but similar information for corrosion at ordinary temperatures is available only from scattered sources, representing different methods of testing. A comprehensive analysis of the crystallographic and metallographic structure of several Al-CuAl, lamellar eutectic grains solidified under equilibrium conditions has been performed. A consistent pattern was discovered which was interpreted in terms of a detailed atomistic model of an interface describable as: Interface II {111} AL 11 {211} <101>Al <120> ? Several arguments are presented to substantiate the theory. It is compared in detail with another interface model characteristic of the Wid-manstatten precipitate of CuAl2 in A1 at low Cu levels. In addition, a concept is proposed to help explain the structure of the compound CuAl2. It has been shown that the eutectic alloy between A1 and CuA1, can be forced to solidify as substantially parallel lamellae throughout a relatively large volume&apos; by appropriately controlling the solidification parameters of growth rate, thermal gradients, and impurity level and by causing solidification to proceed in a unidirectional fashion from one end of an ingot to the other. A typical ingot solidified in this manner shows three distinct zones along the length of the ingot, Fig. 1. At the head end is a region consisting of many different grains, some of which are elongated slightly in the direction of solidification. After a few centimeters of growth, this polygrained region gradually merges into the second zone which consists of a very few elongated coarse grains. The third zone at the tail end is a region of eutectic colonies caused by segregation of impurities. Microscopic examination of transverse and longitudinal sections of the ingots reveals that during the initial stages of growth (zone I) the lamellar structure is frequently highly distorted and twisted but that it straightens out in zone 11. This characteristic pattern suggests that nucleation of a eutectic grain begins randomly at the head end of the ingot, and that some particular orientation relationship between the phases is more favorable from an energy consideration than others for one reason or another, so that some grains grow and others which are less favorably oriented do not. The favorably oriented or "low energy" grains continue to grow until excess solute rejected at the advancing liquid-solid interface destroys the parallel lamellar structure by forming a cellular rather than a substantially planar interface. When this occurs, the parallel lamellae fan out and eutectic colonies are formed because the lamellae grow perpendicular to the local interface. Questions naturally arise as to the crystallographic nature of the "low energy" grains. What do the grains which persist into zone II have in common? Can this explain the stability of such grains during growth? To answer the first question it is necessary to determine the crystallographic orientation of the lamellae of each phase relative to one another. This has been done for Al-CuAl2 eutectic alloys by two different techniques on specimens prepared in different ways.2&apos;3 The results were different from each other and from a third orientation relationship between A1 and CuA1, reported for overaged A1-Cu alloys.4 The three orientation relationships are summarized below to illustrate their similarities and their differences. Fine particles float poorly and less-selectively under normal flotation conditions. One of the promising methods for fine minerals is the utilization of the principle of Flocculation. Hydrophobic flocculation flotation (or floc flotation) was tested on a magnetite concentrate that was finely ground to be micron particles, for producing a concentrate with sulphur grade less than 0.1%. After that, slurry dispersing with water glass as dispersant, pyrite fines were subjected to hydrophobic flocculation induced by xanthate and a small amount of kerosene then the slurry was transferred to a flotation cell for recovering the hydrophobic flocs. The experiments carried out indicated that through one-step rougher and two-step cleaner flotation, sulphur grade was reduced from 1% to 0.1%. It has been found that the separation efficiency of the floc flotation process closely correlates with the main parameters of hydrophobic flocculation such as xanthate addition, conditioning time and kerosene addition.

KNOWLEDGE of the theory underlying the behavior of mixtures of fluids in reservoir rocks is essential to the proper solution of certain types of problems in petroleum pro-duction, but is as yet incompletely devel-oped. The object of this paper is to show the application of well established thermody-namic and physical principles to these prob-lems, and thus to assist in the development of the basic theory. For convenience the problems to be considered here may be divided into two groups: I. Static problems, involving only the static balance between capillary forces and those due to the difference in densities of the fluids; i.e., gravitational forces. 2. Dynamic problems, involving analysis of the motion of mixtures of immiscible fluids in porous media under the influence of forces due to gravity, capillarity, and an impressed external pressure differential. CAPILLARY EQUILIBRIUM IN SANDS Under this heading the static type of problem will be discussed and the results of experimental investigations on the capillary properties of unconsolidated sands will be presented. Although the discussion of this section is, in a sense, prefatory to the treat-ment of problems of mixture flow, the con-cepts developed here have considerable intrinsic importance apart from their ap-plication to flow problems. For, it is reason-able to postulate that the reservoir fluids are, owing to their long existence in undis-turbed mutual contact prior to exploitation, in substantial equilibrium. It follows that their distribution in the reservoir at the time of tapping should be entirely predict-able from the theory of capillary equi-librium, provided certain experimentally measurable properties of the reservoir rock are known. Knowledge of the distribution of the several fluids in the reservoir is, of course, helpful in the estimation of reserves and in other problems. It is to be emphasized that throughout the discussion of capillary statics it is as-sumed that the fluids are in equilibrium from the capillary standpoint. Thus, water, where it is referred to as being in a reser-voir, will be understood to be interstitial water, present at the time of drilling the reservoir, commonly termed "connate" water. The theory developed here is perfectly general for any porous solid, whether a carefully prepared unconsolidated sand or a natural sandstone from an oil reservoir. At present, however, only problems in-volving clean, unconsolidated sands can be made to yield numerical solutions, since only such sands have been adequately in-vestigated experimentally. Experimental evaluation of the pertinent properties of natural reservoir rocks will permit the ex-tension of the numerical treatment to prob-lems involving these materials. We shall now consider in some detail the static equilibrium of fluid mixtures in porous solids; that is, the manner in which the reservoir fluids are distributed vertically when the forces due to capillarity are just balanced by those due to gravitation.

The sign of the surface potential for complex non-reactive ionic solids cannot be predicted solely from consideration of the hydration energy of gaseous ions which constitute the ionic lattice. Accurate analysis of these systems must involve the hydration energy of surface ions, which requires knowledge of the crystal structure, the identification of cleavage planes, and the calculation of binding energies of surface ions. Surface binding energies for ionic solids can be determined if the Surface Madelung Constant is known. A computational technique was developed for the calculation of Madelung Constants for infinite lattices which gives excellent agreement with the values calculated by other more complicated methods reported in the literature. Extension of this technique permits the calculation of Surface Madelung Constants and binding energies of surface ions, [Aus], for semi-infinite solids. The hydration free energy of gaseous ions, [AFh], together with the calculated binding energy of surface ions, [Aus], allows calculation of the hydration energy of surface ions,[AGh], as for the case of the ionic solid, MX: [ ]

The code of hoisting signals for use in mines hoisting from one level, as suggested in this publication, is submitted to induce consideration of this subject by representative groups of the coal-mining industry, such as the lithe Inspectors Institute of America, National Coal Association, American Mining Congress, and others, as well as to -furnish a code of signals for use in those mines operated in States that do not have regulatory hoisting codes in their mining laws, or regulations. The signal codes described in this publication apply only to mines hoisting from one level and to slope mines. Mines that hoist from more than one level are referred to Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7289 Suggested Hoisting-Signal Code For Metal Mine Shafts, which suggests signals for hoisting from various levels or stations.

Ground energy systems are being installed in increasing numbers in the United Kingdom. This is particularly true in London where planning regulations require larger scale developments to provide at least 10% of their entire energy demands from renewable sources. A common approach has been to use the groundwater from the Chalk aquifer as a source of energy. This paper explains the potential long and short term sustainability problems with groundwater based systems sited in central London (or any other urbanized area). It also outlines an approach to site testing and numerical modelling to ensure that the system functions well throughout its lifetime. This approach is then applied to a project located in central London.

THE mineral graphite has been known for hundreds of years and was first used commercially as a coloring agent. Its true identity, however, was not recognized until the end of the eighteenth century and its commercial development did not become extensive until near the close of the nineteenth century. The common names for this mineral are graphite, plumbago, and black lead; others less frequently used are potelot, crayon noir, carbo mineralis, and kish. Graphite was named by Johann Gottlieb Werner in 1789 from the Greek word graphein, to write, and this name was applied primarily to the large crystalline, flake variety. Plumbago is a trade term used primarily for massive graphite as found in Ceylon. Black lead is also a trade term and, like plumbago, is based upon the idea that prevailed throughout the Middle Ages that graphite was a form of lead, or at least contained that metal. Graphite is a soft, black, unctuous form of carbon that crystallizes in the hexagonal system with rhombohedra1 symmetry. It occurs occasionally in six-sided tabular crystals but usually is found in foliated masses, minute disseminated scales, or earthy lumps. It has perfect basal cleavage, is gray to black, has a metallic luster and a gray streak. The specific gravity is 2.1 and hardness is 1 to 2. It is opaque even in finest particles; extremely resistant to the action of acid or heat; and a good conductor of both heat and electricity. Graphite may be separated into three classes: ( ) natural, (2) manufactured (which is sometime called artificial), and (3) colloidal. Natural graphite is divided into two classes, "crystalline" and "amorphous." Crystalline graphite may occur as flake, lump, chip or dust. Amorphous graphite is a commercial term only, as all graphite is crystalline, but grades in which the individual grains cannot be distinguished are classified by the trade as amorphous. Natural mixtures of crystalline and amorphous occur in all proportions. The term "artificial graphite" is a misnomer; "manufactured graphite" is a better term, because it actually is pure crystalline graphite,

With the continuing move towards digital signal based control and measurement, it is inevitable that such technology will be increasingly employed on remote sites. The benefits of increased metallurgical performance, of reduced energy and manpower requirements far outweigh the problems associated with high technology in remote locations, provided that the installation is well thought out from both technical and manpower viewpoints. The new accessibility of vast quantities of process data will uncover previously unthought of savings and profit opportunities but brings with it the responsibility to carefully design the data presentation methods. The resulting changes in installed hardware will force changes in the maintenance and engineering workforce and will affect even the stores and purchasing department methods.
