Abstract-An economic simulation model was developed to predict the amount of copper recovered from copper oxide deposits, and the cost of producing it as a function of the deposit parameters. The economic simulation model includes programs for fragmentation design and cost, copper extraction, solution distribution and recovery, effluent solution cutoff grade, and financial analysis. Cost and price indices were also developed to evaluate the economic feasibility of in situ leaching operations as a function of their starting date. Application of the models to various hypothetical properties having the same area and different ore thickness shows that the effluent solution cutoff grade does not vary with the ore thickness nor with its grade. The percent of copper recovery is, however, shown to increase with the increase in the ore thickness and is independent of the ore grade. It is also shown that while the profit per unit of extracted copper increases with the increase in ore grade or ore thickness, the rate of return on total investment does not show any correlation.

Due to disturbance of their traditional roosts, caves and tree hollows, more than half of the 44 bat species found in the United States and Canada now live in abandoned and inactive underground mines. The North American Bats and Mines Project was created two years ago by Bat Conservation International Inc. (BCI) in Austin, TX and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in response to the issue of mine closure and bat habitat. The partnership provides national coordination among government and private agencies and the mining industry to minimize the loss of bats living in mines. It also trains land managers on how to conduct cost-effective mine assessment and closure to protect both bats and people.

Rates of oxidation were studied for levitation-melted samples of Fe-C, Fe-Si, Fe-C-Si, Fe-C-P, Fe-C-Mn, and Fe-C-S alloys oxidized by mixtures of either 5 or 10 pct O2, in helium at several temperatures in the range 1850o to 2050°C. The concentrations of the oxidized elements decreased linearly with time. Mass transport in the gas phase was found to be the rate-controlling step. Ilowever, a mulliple -film model was necessary to account for the flux of iron and manganese vapor counter to the oxygen flow. THE advent of the basic oxygen and spray-refining processes of steelmaking has generated considerable interest in the kinetics of reactions between oxygen-bearing gases and liquid iron alloys. The object of this research was the determination of the role of mass transport in the gas and metal phases and of surface chemical reactions in the overall oxidation process. Of the reactions for elimination of elements dissolved in liquid iron, the oxidation of carbon has been investigated most extensively. Studies by Fuji and Ura,1 Fuji,' and Gunji et a1.,3 done with pilot-scale basic oxygen furnaces, indicated that mass transport of gaseous oxygen was rate controlling when the metal carbon content was greater than 0.15 to 0.30 pct. When the carbon content was less than this critical amount, diffusion of carbon dissolved in the iron was thought to be rate limiting. L. A. Baker et a1.4,5 levitated samples of iron-carbon alloys and oxidized them in CO-CO2, CO-C02-He, and O2-He atmospheres at 1660°C. These investigators found that the metal carbon concentration decreased linearly with time and their samples exploded when the carbon content fell below about 0.8 pct. They concluded that the rate-limiting step was the transfer of oxidant to the gas-metal interface. A model based on this rate-limiting step predicted decarburization rates within a factor of two of those experimentally observed. The explosion of the samples was attributed to a shift in rate-controlling step from gas-phase mass transport to transport of carbon dissolved in the metal. L. A. Baker and R. G. ward6 and R. Baker7 used freely falling droplets to investigate oxidation kinetics. In both papers, the authors speculated that flame fronts may have been partially responsible for the lack of better agreement between experiment and theory. Swisher and Turkdogan8 oxidized liquid iron having an initial carbon content of 0.97 pct with CO-CO2 and CO-C02-Ar mixtures at 1580°C. They concluded that a surface reaction was the rate controlling step. Iron-silicon alloys have been oxidized by R. Baker7 and Filipov and Martynov.9 R. Baker 7 also studied iron-carbon-silicon alloys falling as liquid droplets through oxygen. He found that the rate of both carbon and silicon oxidation varied inversely with the drop radius. When the initial silicon concentration was greater than 6 pct, the samples cooled during their fall. Manganese oxidation has been studied by R. Baker,7 and by Filipov and Martynov.9 ward10 investigated the loss of manganese from liquid iron under vacuum. He found that mass transport of manganese vapor was rate limiting in argon atmospheres of 0.02 torr to 700 torr pressure. Iron-sulfur alloys were desulfurized with H2-He and H2-Ar mixtures by Peters et al.11 A model based on the transport of H2S from the gas-metal interface into the bulk gas gave fair agreement between the predictions of the model and the experimental results. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE Essentially, the technique consisted of using helium-oxygen gas mixtures to oxidize levitated samples of liquid binary and ternary iron-base alloys. Experimental results are given for the rate of oxidation of ferrous iron to ferric iron in pure molten iron oxide by carbon dioxide + carbon moloxide mixtures at 1550°C. It is shown that the rate-controlling process is the interdiffusion of iron and oxygen atoms within the melt. The inter-diffusivity of iron and oxygen in the melt is obtained from the results and the value of (5.0 * 1.0) x 10-5sq cm per sec is recommended for the temperature of 1550°C. Similarly, it is also found that the rate of reduction of molten iron oxide is con -trolled by diffusion in the melt; however, apparent interdiffusivity values from these experiments are 10 to 20 pct higher than those obtained in the oxidation experiments, by virtue of convection arising from density difference. The results of the oxidation experintents are used to calculate an estimated self-diffusivity of iron in molten iron oxide of (1.5 * 0.5) x sq cm per sec. BECAUSE of the industrial importance of iron oxides, the study of the kinetics of both the reduction and oxidation of the solid oxides has received a great deal of attention. However, knowledge of the kinetics of similar reactions in the liquid state is very meager. Dancy 1 studied the kinetics of reduction of molten iron oxide by carbon in pig iron and found that the reaction is very fast. SEVERAL years ago my firm was representing the Mt. Lyell Co. of Australia, which was shipping its blister copper to a refining works in the United States. After the contract had been running for many months, the superintendent of these works discovered that if water was poured upon the surface of the bars much of it would disappear into the interior through blow holes. -Some experiments made by him showed that this could be a considerable amount, so that copper which had been rained on before it was weighed, although the surface appeared dry, nevertheless would contain water. It had frequently occurred in our experience-as samp-lers that the drillings from a lot taken by boring would come out quite wet, and in some cases, indeed, water would drip into the sample pan placed below the bars, due to the fact that the drill had penetrated a cavity or cavities containing water, which presumably got into the cavities at the time the copper was water-cooled after casting, there being, perhaps, no outlet to the surface. So far as I know, until this discovery at the refining works, no. one had thought that rain could penetrate into the interior of blister copper; at least in any quantity sufficient to be considered.

Since the initial development and trials of FLEXIBOLT flexible roof bolts, further comparative testing and product development has been completed as part of the changeover to this roof support system at two Australian longwall operations, Ellalong and Angus Place Collieries. Details of the practical implementation of FLEXIBOLTS at both collieries are outlined together with their impact on roadway development rate productivity. At Ellalong where fully encapsulated 2.1 m long bolts are used, the reduction in bolt density is discussed with respect to both support system design and work force acceptance. The impact of shear deformation on bolt loading is described. Bolts longer than the working height have been required at Angus Place to achieve a suitable bolt anchorage horizon. Details of the long hole drilling and the benefits of a two stage grouting procedure are outlined. Improvements in roof conditions which have resulted from the inclusion of FLEXIBOLTS into the overall roof support strategy at Angus Place are described. Their importance to the viability of the Angus Place operation is also highlighted.

Introduction As the world economies continue to face an increased demand for natural resources to support growth in the established and developing world, the western mining industry has expanded its operations and funding of mineral developments into new and relatively unexplored regions of the world. Mining companies worldwide, in order to grow in a global economy, are now actively exploring and developing mineral resources in the emerging markets of South and Central America and most recently have expanded activities throughout Asia. South East Asia Resources (S.E.A. Resources) has recognized the vast resource potential offered by countries such as China, India and Indonesia, Asia's main driving forces of economic growth and has made a commitment to be actively involved in the area. These countries rich in mineral resources, represent some of the highly prospective and underexplored regions on earth. Their vast potential has been underestimated because of political reasons and overlooked as Central and South America still continue to be the focus of exploration for many mining companies. Most of these Asian countries have faced a prolonged period of political unrest and it has not been until recently that they have begun to enjoy a relatively stable political climate which has encouraged foreign investment, growth and economic development. These countries are in need of capital to develop their infrastructure and market economies. Their wealth in resources is one of the best methods to achieve their goals. Gold is usually one of the first targets to be extracted from developing economies. Equivalent-sized gold projects tend to cost less to develop and require less supporting infrastructure than base metals. These projects are easier to finance and, most important of all, tend to give a quicker return on investment than that offered by base metals. They also provide the economy with precious foreign exchange, international investment and the technology required to build the country. Following is a graph representing the global re-allocation of the total capital investment on the twenty largest gold projects now under construction with the total for those under construction in 1990.

Science involves the study of the nature and behaviour of natural things and the knowledge we obtain about them. Scientific endeavour leads to the unfolding of new knowledge and adjustments to our understanding and our behavior. To indicate that we ‘know’ something may merely mean we do not feel able to, or that we do not wish to, disagree with others who claim to know; or it may mean we have either heard about it, or studied it, or understand part of it, or accept that it is true, or have seen evidence to be convinced of its veracity. What do we ‘know’ about the health effects of vibration? There are many unknowns in the field of human responses to vibration. Not all would agree on what is known and what is unknown. This paper seeks to summarize what we know that we know, what it is sometimes claimed that we know, and what we know that we do not know about the relation between exposures to vibration and our health. It also speculates on what we do not know that we do not know. Hand-transmitted vibration What we know we know We know that exposures to hand-transmitted vibration result in various disorders of the hand, including abnormal vascular and neurological function. Not all frequencies, or magnitudes, or durations, of hand-transmitted vibration cause the same effects. What we may claim to know To enable exposures to be reported and compared, they are ‘measured’ and ‘evaluated’ using defined (e.g. standardised) procedures. This involves identifying what is to be measured and specifying how it is expressed by one (or a few) numbers. Summarising a vibration exposure in a single value involves assuming the relative importance of components within the vibration (e.g. different magnitudes, frequencies, directions, and durations), so standards define ‘weightings’ for these variables. The importance of the weighted values may also be suggested, allowing ‘assessments’ according to a criterion (e.g. the probability of a specific severity of a specific disease). Standards for the measurement and evaluation of hand-transmitted vibration define a frequency weighting and time dependencies that allow the severity of vibration exposures to be assessed and the probability of finger blanching to be predicted 1. What we do not know We do not know that the frequency weighting in current standards reflects the relative importance of different frequencies and axes of vibration in producing any specific disorder. We do not know whether the energy-based daily time-dependency inherent in A(8) reflects the relative importance of vibration magnitude and daily exposure duration. Consequently, the relation between A(8) and the years of exposure to develop finger blanching, as in an appendix to ISO 5349-1 (2001), is not well-founded. We do not know, or at least there is no consensus on, the full extent of the disorders caused by hand-transmitted vibration (e.g. vascular, neurological, muscular, articular, central), or the pathogenesis of any specific disorder caused by hand-transmitted vibration, or the roles of other factors (e.g. ergonomic factors, environmental factors, or individual factors). THE possible sources of potash salts in the United States have been considered from many points of view during the last several years, but it is only within the last two or three months that the situation has become acute. We import from Germany, the only source of large supply, more than $10,000,000 worth of potash salts annually, and this business has been badly crippled by the European war. If there was ever a time in our industrial existence when the necessity of providing for our own needs was more acute than it is now, we are not aware of it. One has only to study the price, lists of chemicals sent out by the large supply houses to see the change wrought within a very short time. Whether or no these prices are to maintain for a considerable time, no one can say; but it appears to be probable that we shall not see prices materially lower for a period of uncomfortable length, to say the least. It is not my purpose at this time to discuss the various sources of supply of potash salts that have been suggested or recommended. Some of them might afford a pleasing relief but all of them combined would not affect the situation seriously. If we are to have our own sources of potash salts, they will have to compare, in some efficient manner, with the sources upon which we have drawn during the last 20 or 30 years; i.e., they must exist-in minable quantities. It seems to me to be quite idle to speculate upon our domestic sources of potash if those sources are not of a character similar to those upon which we have so long depended. A few thousand or, perhaps,, a few hundred thousand dollars' worth of chemically derived 'potash may be produced under the stress of present conditions, but when we consider that each year demands more than $10,000,000 worth, we must look to underground sources; we must look to mines similar to the famous Stassfurt and Halle deposits. If we cannot mine potash salts, we shall have to do without them for a while.

"A non-destructive testing program was established at Crows Nest Resources (C.N.R.), Line Creek mining operation following an in-service fatigue failure of a front wheel spindle on a large haulage truck.This failure identified a definite need for improvements in the ultrasonic techniques used during the mandatory spindle integrity examinations. Initial investigations using common mining industry ultrasonic examination techniques showed that the smallest detectable cracks were 75 mm in length for the spindle types in service at the C.N.R. site. The Initial findings indicated that inadequate inspection technique design was the cause of the poor performance. To improve inspection reliability it was identified that improved ultrasonic techniques were required. Results using designed ultrasonic techniques were encouraging, with the detection of simulated and natural cracks 12 mm long achieved. The cost benefits associated with the extended spindle life, following the removal of these small fatigue cracks, far exceeded those of the expertise and effort necessary to implement and conduct the N.D.T. program.Introduction During 50 years of evolution, non-destructive testing (N.D. T.) has progressed from a laboratory curiosity to a well accepted and invaluable tool used in the assessment of material integrity. Unlike destructive testing, N.D.T. does not deform or render the material useless. Non-destructive tests may involve many applications, from the determination of a corrosion prevention coating thickness to the examination of a raw material for internal and external deformities.Within the mining sector, highly-stressed components will normally have been subjected to some form of non-destructive test during their manufacturing cycle. These tests are used to ensure the component does not contain material flaws whichmay be detrimental to its service performance.While the component may have assured quality when produced, deterioration by fatigue may occur during an aggressive service life. Large dynamically-loaded components such as haulage truck front wheel spindles are , in particular, prone to this service related problem."

This paper highlights the successful pile load testing program for the redevelopment of Pier One in East Boston, Massachusetts. Pier One is a 5.4-acre parcel on a dormant waterfront site used in the 1950s as a warehouse and distribution facility. The developer plans to re-use the existing 14-inch-diameter concrete-filled steel pipe piles to support four 5- to 7-story apartment buildings above a 2-story parking garage. A pile load testing program was developed to establish if the existing piles could support design loads of 240 kips for project financial feasibility and up to 300 kips for a significant reduction in future foundation costs. The Phase 1 program consisted of statnamic and dynamic load testing on two piles with two loading intervals (200 and 240 kips). Based upon the favorable results of the Phase 1 program, the Phase 2 program involved statnamic load testing on two piles and dynamic load testing on ten piles with three loading intervals (200, 240, and 300 kips). The Phase 2 program confirmed the favorable results which were applied across varying strata thicknesses and pile embedment depths. The average allowable capacity for the piles tested was greater than 300 kips with pile movement up to 0.3 inches.

The Epping to Chatswood Rail Line project is the largest publicly funded infrastructure project in New South Wales. Construction commenced in November2002 with opening scheduled for 2008. The work includes 13 route km of twin TBM driven 7.2 m diameter lined running tunnel, three cross-overs and three new underground stations. The new stations have platform caverns of 20m span with similarly proportioned concourse caverns alongside. The ground is bedded sand stone and shale with high horizontal stresses. Predicted stress-relief induced ground movements during staged excavation led to innovative use of rock anchors for permanent support.

"Two areas are involved in the research work of the comminution process (crushing and grinding). The first one involves the changes of the size class distribution values that are definded by the differential equations in the function of the ore property and working conditions. The second area involves the comminution of the different levels in order to optimize the working parameters and to decrease the operational costs in the grinding process.We have studied, in detail, the possibility of functioning the crusher at the maximal loading, over 4500 kN, ball mills with diameters larger than 5.0 m and semiautogenous mills with diameters larger than 10.0 m.Using the computers, we have achieved the maximal loading range of the crusher, over Fc ? 4500 kN in the crushing process. In the grinding process, using the adequate differential equations in the automation process, we have established the correlation between the pulp mass capacity in the mill, pulp dencity, ore fineness in the pulp and recirculating ore charge.With the appopriate text, equations and graphs, this paper shows the results of our several years research work in the laboratory and in the ore comminution plant of Majdanpek Copper Mine."

It is well known that the density and viscosity of a mill pulp have optimum levels for grinding efficiency, and sophisticated control loops are employed to control pulp density in industry. However, these control loops rely on a number of plant measurements, and often the input data will not permit effective determination and control of the mill pulp density. The use of a single remote pulp density measurement has obvious advantages, and it is suggested and demonstrated for laboratory batch grinding that mill noise measurements can indicate the effective density of the mill pulp. In addition, the mill noise is shown to indicate the actual effective pulp viscosity in the mill and hence permit the identification of the dynamic rheological regime existing in the mill. It is demonstrated that mill noise increases with grind time and, at any given grind time, with increasing pulp density in the pseudoplastic range. This increase in mill noise level with pulp density is interpreted as indicating a decreasing pulp viscosity. The results show that the transition from dilatant to pseudoplastic conditions within the mill, with increasing pulp density, can be identified by this increase in mill noise. When the pseudoplastic pulp started to exhibit yield characteris- tics, the mill noise fell dramatically. The technique of mill noise analysis is then used to investigate the effect of a grinding additive on the batch grinding of two ores. With a magnetite ore, the additive was shown to increase the mill noise, and hence decrease the pulp viscosity, in the pseudoplastic region and to increase the effective grinding. The molybdenite ore, however, did not show significant noise level changes and did not show improved grinding efficiency.

Orebodies in the Mt. Charlotte - Hannans North Area N. & B. of the town of Kalgoorlie provide a marked'dontrast to the pyrite - telluride lodes of the Golden Mile, although both groups of orebodies appear to be fundamentally related. These highly siliceous telluride free orebodies N. of the Golden Mile are closely related to strong oblique faulting. The Golden Mile. lodes, while possessing an apparent over-all relationship to the oblique faults also have a close relationship to E.-dipping strike faults.

The borehole deformation gage and overcoring techniques developed by the Bureau of Mines form one of the primary methods of determining in situ rock stress. This report describes a least squares method of calculating the average rock stress components in the horizontal plane from more than three diametral deformation measurements in a vertical borehole. This least squares analysis provides a means of determining the multiple correlation coefficient, the variance, and the scatter for a set of deformation measurements. From this information, confidence limits can be calculated for the secondary horizontal principal stresses and their directions. The material presented in this report can be used as a guide to the development of least squares solutions for stress measurement techniques other than the borehole deformation method. Since the statistical information that results from the least squares method is extremely useful in the interpretation of results, it is recommended that a least squares analysis be used on stress measurement data whenever possible.

The measurement of temperatures in exploratory drill holes yields information on regional and local geothermal gradients and mean surface temperatures. This data may be beneficial to the mining geologist interested in the occurrence and oxidation of metallic sulfide minerals or to the mining engineer interested in subsurface temperatures or water movement. Additionally, the estimation of mean surface temperatures by the projection of thermal gradients to the ground surface provides data on which to evaluate infrared imagery as an exploration tool. Temperature measurements in 30 diamond drill holes in the Silver Bell mining district of Arizona show that a regional geothermal gradient of 2.45°C per 100 m increases to 3.03°C per 100 m near the ground surface. It is also found that an anomaly in the mean annual surface temperature of 0.5°C is associated with the shallow occurrence of disseminated sulfides. Changes in the geothermal gradient due to topography, water circulation, and formation changes also occur.

For the past year we have had in use at the Durham furnace a set of hollow pig-patterns made of iron, which have given such satis factory results that I think a description of them would be of interest to the members of the Institute. Before the introduction of these iron patterns, we used the ordi nary wooden patterns, made in the usual way with straps of iron along the sides to protect the corners from wearing off. The size and shape of these wooden patterns are shown in Fig. 1. When the patterns were new, the pigs weighed about 130 pounds each, and were uniform in size, and the moulding was clean. But constant use soon wore the patterns away; and at the end of a few months, the pigs had become, in consequence, so much lighter that the moulding, daily, of several additional beds was necessary to accommodate the same quantity of iron. As the patterns wear away, the moulding becomes ragged and the pigs rough. Moreover, wooden patterns are often destroyed by fire. I have known an entire set to be destroyed by a break-out of iron. The iron pattern which I have designed is free from all the objections to the wooden pattern, being not only more durable, but, in the long run, far cheaper. The iron pattern having the same shape and size as the wooden one, is made of the best flange-iron, of No. 13 gauge. After the sheets have been cut to the proper size, three heats are required for the flanging. Y.-On discussing this paper I am open to the criticism of "bringing coals to Newcastle," as I, a zinc man, am bringing new ideas on steel to Pittsburgh. But still the view of an outsider can be valuable to the insider. Any multistage process, where each apparatus operates on its particular part of the work at a high efficiency, constitutes an advance in the state of art. But in multiplicity there can be complication and ensuing loss and inefficiency. The duplex steel process is not the pronounced success which was predicted for it by its adherents, for several of such plants have reverted to plain open-hearth methods. If we regard broadly refining processes, such as the Bessemer, open-hearth, puddling, copper refining, lead cupelling, nickel refining, we find that in general refining processes are intermittent and 'concentration processes are continuous. (This generalization I believe to be original with me; it was communicated to Dr. E. F. Roeber, editor, and appeared as an editorial in Metallurgical and Chemical Engineering, March, 1905.) Where we desire primarily quality in a metallurgical operation we must put a batch of metal in the furnace, work on it until we get it to the required purity, test it, and take it out; whereas, if we desire primarily quantity we shove ore into a furnace and smelt it as fast as possible, allowing conditions to make a non-uniform product provided only we get tonnage. From general commercial principles, I believe that the weak point of the duplex process is that the operation is not a money maker unless the plant is kept at. 90 to 95 per cent. of its rated capacity, or unless the Bessemerizing is done so often that it is practically continuous. For in some manner the operation should be made continuous and the control on the tonnage should be commercially flexible. The commercial rigidity of having to control purity exactly increases operating costs without a corresponding gain. Conversely, the chief reason for failure of "steel from ore direct" is that it makes a final operation continuous, which should be naturally intermittent.
