"Both COD and TOC can characterize organic pollution of coking wastewater. In theory, there is a linear correlation between these two indicators. After continuous monitoring TOC and COD of coking waste water, linear regression relationship between of these to indicators was studied with the use of mathematical statistics. And conversion equation between these two indicators was established, and using t-test method for significance testing. The results showed that the linear relationship of COD and TOC was significant. Also interval estimation of equation slope and intercept were given in the condition of 95% confidence level. A linear regression equation established can be used to indirectly convert TOC to COD with high precision and accuracy.IntroductionBoth chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC) are measure of the degree of characterization for organic pollution of water bodies. The current COD standard analytical methods is Potassium dichromate titration method [1] . there are some disadvantages in this method, such as only part of organic matter in the water bodies being oxidated, the refluxed steps, a long time needed for each measurement, high cost. It is the most important that sulfuric acid silver and mercury sulfate reagents used in the measurement may easily lead to secondary pollution. In contrast, the measurement of TOC is by the method of combustion or Photocatalytic Oxidation. The result could be easily got from the instrument. There are some advantages in this way, such as easy operation, short time and little expenses for each measurement and no secondary pollution 121• In addition, the measurement of TOC has higher degree of precision and accuracy than the measurement of COD both in the determination of calibration standards and actual samples. The Soldier Canyon Mine (the "Mine") degasification project demonstrates the ability to commercially recover coalbed gas to reduce overall mine costs associated with methane drainage. Gas is recovered from active and inactive areas of the Mine through an underground pipeline and surface compressors. Close inspection of gas quality is required due to potential contamination of air caused by excessive vacuum. Water must be removed routinely to enhance gas removal. This paper will review the operational and production procedures required to maximize gas recovery and insure safety at the Soldier Canyon Mine gas recovery project.

W. C. Ellis—The intergranular fracture observed by these authors in brass seems to be characteristic of metals when tested under similar conditions. It has been observed by us in room temperature tests on lead alloys subjected to constant stress when the stress has been low enough to afford a small strain rate. If, however, the test be carried out at a high stress and therefore at a large strain rate, a characteristic, tapered, transcrystalline fracture is obtained. The same change of fracture has been observed by others with decrease of strain rate and increase of temperature for other metals—for example aluminum—and may be presumed, as the authors point out, to be general for metals. These findings suggest a plastic flow mechanism under conditions of small strain rate and high corresponding temperature differing from classical block slip. The required conditions point to a process fundamentally diffusive in nature—a less organized process than block slip. Nabarro18 has shown that plastic flow can occur by stress induced diffusion of vacant sites— a process of self-diffusion. Movements of a pseudo-viscous nature at grain boundaries are suggested in the work of Ke.15 Deformation near to a grain boundary by other than a slip mechanism appears necessary to Boas and Hargreaves.19 Wood and Rachinger20 report a cellular structure in slowly deformed alumi- num—the cell size is larger, the higher the temperature and the slower the strain rate. Presumably in the latter case diffusive movements occurred in the cell boundaries. In any case the nonslip mechanism seems somewhat obscure and further work is indicated. Such studies will undoubtedly clarify the nature and behavior of lattice imperfections—the very core of the strength and plastic properties of metals. F. H. Wilson and E. W. Palmer (authors' reply)—It is certain that the metallic behavior which has been termed "creep" includes many interdependent phenomena of which a nonslip type of plastic flow may well be one. The reports to which Mr. Ellis refers are illustrative of the many different observations that must be correlated for a complete understanding of creep. The list could be extended considerably. For example, we ourselves have been impressed by the sensitivity of creep phenomena to the presence of minor impurities and feel that this aspect of the problem warrants more thorough study than it has yet received. The formation of secondary - recrystallization tex-tlires in cube-textured 18-8 stain less steel (Type 304) Ilas been studied at three temperatures. Prolonged annealing at 100°'C protluces a PredoninanGly (520) [OOZJ-type texture, which is related to the cube te.ture of the primary lnatrix by a rotation of approxivzately 22 deg around the [001] axis in the rolling direction. Annealing at 1200 or 1300°C facers the formation of the (123)[272/-type texture, which is related to the matrix texture by a [111] rotation of app.voxiniately 40 deg. These observations suggest that in the secondary recrystallization of cube-texlut-ed stainless steel an apparent actilation energy for growth is higher for grains related to the tncrtuix Og [111] rotations thun those reloted by [100] rotations. THE formation of secondary-recrystallization textures in cube-textured primary matrices of fcc metals has been studied widely by various investigators. For Fe-40 pct Ni alloys, Pawlek' and wassermann2 reported that the orientations of secondary grains were related to the cube texture by rotations of 30 and 38 deg around [001] in the rolling direction. However, Rathenau and custers3 found that, while in one Fe-48 pct Ni alloy, most of the secondary grains were oriented with respect to the cube-textured matrix by rotations around [001] of 26.5 deg, in another alloy of a different origin, the orientations of secondary grains were related to the cube texture by rotations of approximately 35 deg around a [lll] axis. Similar orientation relationships were also observed between the secondary grains and the cube-textured primary matrices of copper.4"a No attempt was made to differentiate these two types of orientation relationships; reorientation by either a [111] or a [100] rotation was considered to be equally favored. The present investigation consisted of a study of the secondary recrystallization textures in cube-textured stainless steel. It was noted that the secondary grains formed in stainless steel were considerably smaller than those of Fe-Ni alloys or copper. This offered the advantage that the secondary recrystallization texture could be determined by the texture-goniometer technique, and a more detailed study of the textural development during the course of secondary recrystallization could be made. The effect of annealing temperature on the formation of secondary-recrystallization textures was also investigated. MATERLAL AND METHOD It was shown earlier"-" that a strong cube texture can be obtained in 18-8 stainless steels by rolling at 800°C to produce the copper-type deformation texture, followed by annealing at 800" to 1000°C for recrystallization. To improve the cube texture for the present study, a commercial-grade 18-8 stainless steel (Type 304) was rolled at 800°C first to 5 mm (0.2 in.) thick plates. Three of these plates were then stacked and welded together along the edges into a sandwich assembly. After annealing at 900°C for 20 min: the assembly was finally rolled at 800'C to 90 pct reduction in thickness with reheats and end-for-end reversals after each pass. Only the central strip, which was reduced from 5.0 to 0.50 mm (0.7 in. to 0.020 in.) thick, was used. The chemical composition of the steel in weight percent was as follows: C, 0.06; Mn, 0.38: Cr, 18.71; Ni, 9.56: P, 0.011; S, 0.009; and Si, 0.39. The purpose of rolling the strip in a sandwich assembly was to prevent direct contact between the central strip and the rolls. It was observed earlier" that, when the strip was rolled at 800°C without being enclosed in a sandwich assembly, the cube texture obtained by subsequent annealing at 900" or 1000° C for recrystallization was largely confined to the central section of the strip, while most of the recrystallized grains formed in the surface section of the strip were not cube-textured. This was obviously due to the fact that the actual temperature at the strip surface during rolling, as a result of direct contact between the strip and the cold and massive rolls, was considerably lower than 800°C. By using a sandwich assembly for hot rolling, the cube texture obtained upon subsequent annealing for recrystallization was found to extend through the entire thickness of the strip. After rolling, the central strip was taken from the sandwich assembly. and cut into specimens. Prior to annealing. the specimens were etched to 0.25 mm (0.010 in.) thick. A tube furnace provided with a purified, dry argon atmosphere was used for annealing. Textures were determined by the reflection technique. using a Siemens automatic texture-goniometer and ZrOz-filtered MoKa radiation. With a time constant of 4 sec. the preferred orientation of the secondary grains could be measured satisfactorily by the integrated intensities. Both (111) and (200) reflections were measured, and corresponding pole figures were constructed according to the techniques described previously.10 The agreement between results deduced from these two reflections was excellent. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Secondary-Recrystallization Texture due to Prolonged Annealing at 1000°C. Fig. 1 shows the primary-recrystallization texture of a specimen annealed at 1000°C for 30 min. A substantial improvement in both sharpness and intensity of the cube texture, owing to the present processing method, can be noted readily by comparing Fig. 1 with similar pole figures shown earlier in Refs. 9 and 11. This paper presents the main environmental assessment techniques and indicators that can be used a) for the establishment of a sustainable development framework and b) for the evaluation of the environmental performance within the mining sector. Reference is made to techniques as environmental risk and impact assessment, life cycle assessment, cost benefit analysis and best practical environmental option assessment that can be used as tools to assess environmental impacts of processes, activities and products in the mining sector. In addition, the issue of environmental indicators, covering operational, management and environmental areas, that provide valuable information regarding both the environmental performance of a mining company and its efforts to influence this performance towards sustainability is discussed.

"In July 2016 the International Seabed Authority (the “ISA”) released a first working draft of its mineral exploitation regulations as well as the standard contract terms for mineral resources in the Area, for which stakeholder input was sought in late 2016. In January of 2017 the ISA released a discussion paper on environmental matters related to these draft regulations. The ISA is now in the process of further developing its draft exploitation regulations and standard contract terms to ensure that seabed mining is carried out in an environmentally sound way for the common benefit of mankind.As the regulator of the “Area”, the ISA can draw lessons from onshore mining regulators and offshore petroleum regulators for their experiences in legislative drafting to smoothly and safely oversee project development, implementation, and closure. However, one of the unique challenges that the ISA faces in regulating private industry is its status as an international organization and not a sovereign nation, which results in a significantly different legal relationship between the regulator and the regulated. The result is that the exploitation contract is the sole legal connection between the mining proponent and the regulator for the exploitation phrase of the project.Accordingly, in the regulatory development process, the ISA must carefully consider which rights and obligations are set out in the exploitation contract versus the regulations. This decision will dictate the flexibility the ISA will have to modernize the conduct required of mining proponents in response to changing best practices in the industry, technological progress, and advances in the understanding of the marine ecosystem. As the first working draft of the exploitation regulations sets out an initial contract period of twenty years, it is crucial for the ISA to carefully consider the rights, obligations, and procedures it agrees to in the exploitation contract, as unilateral amendment will not be possible after contract execution."

"In this paper, the list analysis of GHG emissions of aluminum industry was conducted based on the data from typical electrolytic aluminum plants of a China’s northwest province. The results show that under the conditions of average anode effect coefficient as 0.16 times/(cell• day) and anode duration as 5 minutes per day, equivalent emissions of CO2 reached 1.23 ton per ton of aluminum, in which PFC emissions accounted for about 71%. Compared with foreign advanced level, which is 0.87 ton per ton of aluminum under the conditions of average anode effect coefficient as 0.01 times/(cell•day) and anode duration as 0.46 minutes per day, there is much room for China’s aluminum industry to reduce GHG emissions. Since anode effect plays an important role on PFCs generation in electrolytic aluminum process, how to control anode effect strictly becomes the key factor for remarkable reduction of GHG emissions in China’s aluminum industry.IntroductionTechnology of aluminum electrolysis is a mature and efficient process of aluminum production. Due to the huge demand on aluminum worldwide, so resource consumption, energy consumption and pollutant emissions in the process of aluminum production are still large. The global output of aluminum reached 45193 kt in 2012. A large amount of CO2 and PFCs are produced in the process of aluminum production, and the greenhouse effect and environmental pollution caused by emissions of them is a concern. PFCs belong to a powerful greenhouse gas, thus emission reduction of PFCs is very important for aluminum electrolysis industry. At present, China's aluminum production accounts for about 33% of the world's aluminum production, and controlling PFCs emission has become the key point of pollution control of aluminum electrolysis industry in China [1].Taking the case of a typical electrolytic aluminum plant of a China’s northwest province, this paper studies the list analysis of GHG emissions of aluminum industry in China. GHG emissions of a China’s northwest province were calculated through investigating existing situation of aluminum electrolysis industry in the province, knowing capacity, output, main production technology and equipment level of aluminum electrolysis industry, and using the calculation framework and methods of GHG emissions of aluminum electrolysis industry, which were put forward by the intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC), the international aluminum association and other organizations at home and abroad. The list analysis of GHG emissions of aluminum electrolysis industry will offer useful information in promoting emission reduction of GHG in aluminum electrolysis industry, improve the efficiency of energy utilization."

Studies on coal mine drainage sludge densification have led to the following conclusions: 1. Coal mine waters containing iron principally in the ferrous (Fea+) state can be treated by a modification of the commonly practiced lime neutralization process to yield a ferromagnetic sludge. The sludge, presumably composed in large part of a hydrated ferrosoferric oxide (Fe304.xH20), is much denser and faster settling than the ordinary "yellowboy" sludge obtained by lime neutralization and aeration at ambient temperatures. 2. The magnetic sludge preparation technique involves (quantitative) precipitation of iron (largely as Fe(OH)2) by the addition of hydrated lime to a pH of 8.5, separation of the resulting sludge from the aqueous phase, and heating of the sludge concentrate to at least 80 C (176 F), preferably higher, followed by mild aeration. 3. Magnesium, present as Mg2 in most coal mine drainage waters, inhibits the formation of the magnetic sludge. This inhibition can be adequately minimized by keeping the pH below 9.6 during lime addition (thus avoiding the coprecipitation of Mg(OH)2) and by separating the sludge from the bulk of the aqueous phase before the heating step, as indicated in (2) above. 4. Aluminum, commonly present in coal mine drainage waters, also inhibits the formation of the magnetic sludge. This inhibition is of practical significance when the molar ratio of aluminum/total iron is greater than 0.18. Below this value, sludges are still appreciably magnetic, but are bulkier and slower settling than those obtained when aluminum is absent. Unlike magnesium inhibition, aluminum inhibition cannot be minimized by the scheme indicated above, since aluminum precipitates as Al(OH)3 near pH 4 and remains dispersed within the sludge. 5. The limitation on aluminum content is probably the most serious restriction affecting the feasibility of the magnetic sludge process as presently conceived. Nevertheless, a limited review of available water quality data has indicated that, in terms of relative acid and iron loadings, a significant number of major coal mine discharges in the eastern Ohio River basin may be amenable to treatment by a magnetic sludge process. 6. Data from tests on the use of magnetic seeding materials indicate that seeding did not enhance the formation of a magnetic sludge under the experimental conditions employed.

"Crushing and grinding operations are burdensome to the environment due to generating large amounts of dust, noise and waste during course of comminution operations. An indirect negative contribution of industrial crushing processes is an increase of carbon dioxide emissions, which is a byproduct in energy production processes. On the other hand comminution processes in ore enrichment technology are essential due to liberation the useful minerals from the gangue, and producing the demanded particle size fractions of products. The article concerns investigation over negative influence of comminution devices on environment in terms of dust and noise emissions. Several various crushing devices were under investigations, both in laboratory and in industrial scale.The obtained results were analyzed in terms throughput and energy consumption achieved in various crushing devices. The test results allow to conclude that an intensity of dust generation for individual types of crushing devices is varied. An additional aim of this article is to link the aspect of mineral processing with its environmental impact and hence an influence of raw materials beneficiation industry on the quality of life of residents in immediate and close vicinity.INTRODUCTIONMineral raw materials beneficiation processes are an integral part of multi-stage processing of coal, iron ore and non-ferrous metals, production of aggregates, cement, or precious metals and stones. One of the common features of all beneficiation operations is their high energy consumption, which is mainly connected with various operations of feed particle size reduction. Comminution processes in ore enrichment technology are essential to expose and liberate the useful minerals from the gangue, while in aggregate production processes – to obtain the demanded particle size fractions of products. Crushing operations are characterized by a high degree of negative impact to the environment and humans, mainly due to:• High electricity consumption, which indirectly contributes to the increased emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, since CO2 is often one of the byproducts of energy production;• Relatively rapid wear of device working parts, what forces a production of spare parts and involvement of steel industry;• Intense dust pollution generated during crushing and grinding processes. This is one of the factors affecting the air quality and the consequent deterioration of the living conditions of inhabitants near mines and processing plants; and • Excessive noise emissions."

A common practice in Europe is shut down on the week-ends.The material is allowed to settle and on start-up an injectic of air for 15 seconds is sufficient prior to start-up. At,mining we put our unit in the middle of a bank of 44 cells and in order to ensure severe sanding we shut the aker cell down while the remaining cells kept running. After 20-25 seconds of air the cell started without trouble.P. Mahant Is there a build-up inside the impellor shaft housing? Falconbrige Ltd.Reply There is no sand build-up but rather a scale build-up which due to a flexing action frees itself periodically. Part of the design of the machine permits a water injection into the shaft housing to free any build-up. This is done in Europe during the week-end shut down."

As most mining companies are taking advantage of the high market prices for base metals such as steel, copper and zinc, numerous challenges still face them. While demand is strong from countries like China and the United States, demand is still mixed in Europe. This leads to the question of how long these high prices and overall high global demand will last. The tremendous market prices of most precious and base metals have enabled many companies to pay down a significant amount of debt accrued during acquisition and capital expenditure phases. Additionally, mining companies have been able to internally fund and engage in large projects to address future growth, (Less, 2006), thus maximizing the performance of the existing asset base, driving maintenance costs down, and improving and empowering the work-force (Mining Journal, 2006). Market prices and general efficiency gains have addressed these issues to some extent. However, critical issues still face operating managers in the mineral pro-cessing side of the industry. Energy prices, for example, continue to have a negative impact on cash costs for producing an ounce of gold or ton of a given base metal (Cummins, 2003).

The heat-treatment of steels will not pass from the stage of an art into that of a science until the mechanism of the phase transformations associated therewith is thoroughly understood. Such an understanding will involve two distinct types of inquiry: (I) the direction of the transformation, (2) the speed of the transformation. The first type of inquiry, which involves only the equilibrium relations between the various phases in steel, is the subject of the present and of a succeeding article; the second type, which involves the kinetics of transformations, will be the subject of a later article. In order that a theory of equilibrium relations may give useful information, certain experimental data must be put into the theory. It is customary for these data to be of a thermal nature. In the system discussed herein—steel—such thermal data are very scarce. In medium-alloy steels another type of data might possibly be used. In these steels the concentration of solute is so low that it may be possible to use the approximation of dilute solutions, an approximation that leads to linear relationships. The unknown functions, or constants, may then be determined in some cases from the binary iron-alloy system and in other cases from the ternary iron-carbon-alloy system. From the functions, or constants, so determined may then be computed the equilibrium relations in more complex medium-alloy steels. In the present article this second approach is used, the necessary experimental data 'being obtained from the simple binary and ternary equilibrium diagrams. Fundamental Equations In this article are derived the equilibrium relations between the gamma, alpha and cementite phases. In these three phases all important alloying elements except carbon form substitutional solutions, each alloying atom occupying a potential site for an iron atom. Carbon, on the other hand, forms an interstitial solution. In the face-centered cubic gamma phase, the interstitial positions are at the center of the unit cube and at the centers of the cube edges. There are therefore four interstitial positions per unit cell, or one per iron atom. In the body-centered cubic alpha phase, the interstitial positions are probably at the face centers, and also at the centers of the edges, which are crystallographically equivalent to the face centers. There are therefore six interstitial positions per unit cube, or three per iron atom. In cementite, (Fe, Alloy)3C, the carbon atoms may. be regarded as filling all the lattice positions of a given type. The introduction of the fundamental the of equilibrium has presented the author with a quandary. These equations are formally so similar to other equations that have been derived1,2 for related systems that they may appear to some readers

Bowtie analysis has recently emerged as a technique of choice that can be used when looking specifically at major hazards in the mining industry. A Bowtie diagram is a graphical means of assessment that focuses on identifying all the specific causes and consequences of major events, from which all the ?pre-event? and ?post-event? control measures can be identified. From this critical control measures can be identified and monitoring/assurance systems can be established. It is this assessment of control measures and their effectiveness that replaces the more traditional evaluation of risk (using matrix-based approaches) based on the fact that risk is a function of control ineffectiveness. This is a major difference with traditional risk assessment where all too often control effectiveness is assumed. This paper summarises the Bowtie analysis process and outlines one specific case study where the technique was used on the unwanted event of a collision of a haul truck and light vehicle in an openpit mine. Although more effort is required in undertaking the assessments, control assurance provided this way will go a long way in ensuring that risk assessments and major hazard management become much more effective in practice.

Improved apparatus, methods, and experimental techniques for determining the capillary pressure-saturation relation are described in detail. In this connection a new multi-core procedure has been developed which simplifies the experimental work in the study of relatively homogeneous reservoirs. The basic theory concerning the Leverett capillary pressure function has been extended and has been given some practical application. Some discussion is presented to indicate the relationship of relative permeability to capillary pressure, and to provide a new description of capillary pressure phenomena by introducing the concept of the psi function. INTRODUCTION For the purposes of this paper the capillary character of a porous medium will be defined to express the basic properties of the system, which produce observed results of fluid behavior. These basic properties may be classified in the following manner, according to their relationship to: (a) The geometrical configuration of the interstitial spaces. This involves consideration of the packing of the particles, producing points of grain contact, and variations in pore size distribution. The packing itself is often modified by the secondary processes of mineralization which introduces factors of cementation, and of solution action which causes alteration of pore structure. (b) The physical and chemical nature of the interstitial surfaces. This involves consideration of the presence of interstitial clay coatings, the existence of non-uniform wetting surfaces; or, more generally, a consideration of the tendency towards variable interaction between the interstitial surfaces and the fluid phases saturating the interstitial spaces. These three measurable macroscopic properties depend upon the microscopic properties enumerated above in a manner which defines the capillary character. Systems of capillary tubes or regularly packed spheres may be thought of as ideal and numerous references can be cited in which exact mathematical formulations are developed to show the relationships governing the static distribution and dynamic motion of fluids in their interstitial spaces. The capillary character of non-ideal porous systems such as reservoir rock also is basic in determining the behavior of fluids contained therein; although, in general, the connection is not mathematically derivable but must be approached through indirect experimental measurement. This paper gives consideration to the evaluation of petroleum reservoir rock capillary character. The methods employed may be applied to the solution of problems in other fields, and the conclusions reached should contribute to the basic capillary theory of any porous system containing fluid phases. In this paper, a modification of the core analysis method of capillary pressure is employed and it is intended to show that the capillary character of reservoir rock can be expressed in terms of experimental quantities. A very general method of interpretation correlating the capillary pressure tests with fundamental characteristics such as rock texture, surface areas, permeability, occasionally clay content and cementation is introduced. Eventually an attempt is made for establishing a method of deriving relative permeability to the wetting phase from capillary pressure data. The experimental evaluation of capillary character must be approached in a statistical manner if reservoir properties are to be inferred from data on small cores. This is implied by the heterogeneous character of most petroleum reservoirs, and suggests that considerable intelligence should be applied in core sampling. Finally, this paper supports the view that once the capillary character of a given type of reservoir rock has been established by core analysis, fluid behavior can then be inferred in other similar rock. Although no great progress has been made in establishing what variation can be tolerated without altering the basic fluid behavior properties, evidence will be presented to indicate that certain reservoir formations are sufficiently homogenous with respect to capillary character that the data obtained on one core will be useful in predicting the properties of other cores of similar origin. Tests have shown that cores under consideration can vary widely with respect to porosity and permeability and still be considered similar in capillary character. Improved apparatus, methods, and experimental techniques for determining the capillary pressure-saturation relation are described in detail. In this connection a new multi-core procedure has been developed which simplifies the experimental work in the study of relatively homogeneous reservoirs. The basic theory concerning the Leverett capillary pressure function has been extended and has been given some practical application. Some discussion is presented to indicate the relationship of relative permeability to capillary pressure, and to provide a new description of capillary pressure phenomena by introducing the concept of the psi function. INTRODUCTION For the purposes of this paper the capillary character of a porous medium will be defined to express the basic properties of the system, which produce observed results of fluid behavior. These basic properties may be classified in the following manner, according to their relationship to: (a) The geometrical configuration of the interstitial spaces. This involves consideration of the packing of the particles, producing points of grain contact, and variations in pore size distribution. The packing itself is often modified by the secondary processes of mineralization which introduces factors of cementation, and of solution action which causes alteration of pore structure. (b) The physical and chemical nature of the interstitial surfaces. The transfer of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers of collector molecules to the surface of mineral crystals is an excellent method for the study of collector adsorption phenomena and is of particular significance in the understanding and development of improved flotation separations. The fatty acid/fluorite and amine/sylvite potation systems were investigated by the Fourier transform infrared/internal reflection spectroscopy (FT-IR/IRS) examination of transferred LB monolayers of collector molecules at the surfaces of the mineral crystals. The [ir]-A isotherm study of fatty acid and amine, typical anionic and cationic collectors, showed the different packing trends dependent upon the pH and/or type of subphase. This result clearly reflects the effect of pH on compound formation and dissociation of the collector molecules. Identification of the collector adsorption state and confirmation of the validity of the FT-IR/IRS adsorption density equation were included in this research effort. This allowed for a detailed discussion of collector adsorption phenomena. As a result of these experiments, it is possible to relate the hydrophobic character of a surface to the nature of the adsorbed collector structure and thus describe flotation behavior in greater detail. For example, it appears that in the case of oleate/ fluorite the equivalent of an LB monolayer can form spontaneously during adsorption from solution, and this structure is known as a self-assembled monolayer (SAM). Such a state is significantly more hydrophobic than the oleate structure which forms on the calcite surface at an equivalent adsorption density.

The original earthfill embankment constructed during 1958 to 1961 was upgraded in 2004 to 2007 to withstand the effects of a maximum credible earthquake. This paper provides general background information on the theory of the explosive compaction of soils, history of use, geology of the site, project constraints, explosives selection, blast designs, instrumentation used, problems encountered and solutions implemented, and the results achieved.

Planning of the efficient operation of a gas-condensate reservoir requires a knowledge not only of the gross phase behavior of the system but also of the equilibrium distribution of the various components between the gas and condensate phases. This equilibrium distribution can be calculated with appropriate equilibrium constants. In this paper are presented equilibrium constants determined experimentally for the oil and gas phases initially present in the same reservoir and for the gas and condensate phases of the gas cap material at a series of pressures below the original reservoir pressure. Also presented is a method for the correlation of the experimentally determined equilibrium constants. The utility of the correlation is demonstrated further by an example of its use in adjusting the equilibrium data to permit their application to another gas-condensate system of similar composition. INTRODUCTION Planning of the efficient operation of a gas-condensate reservoir requires a thorouugh knowledge not only of the gross phase behavior of the particular hydrocarbon system but also of the equilibrium distribution of the various components between the gas and condensate phases. At the initial conditions of reservoir temperature and pressure, the original hydrocarbon materials in a gas-condensate reservoir or in the gas-cap of an associated reservoir exist in a single, homogeneous vapor phase. However, some condensation of hydrocarbons to a liquid phase usually occurs in the reservoir as pressure declines incident to production. Because of this condensation. the produced gas changes composition continuously. The composition of the produced gas, as well as that of the condensed liquid, can be calculated from the composition of the original reservoir material through the application of appropriate equilibrium constants or "K"-values provided these values are known. Equilibrium constants have been used for many years in problems of surface separation of gas and oil and natural gasoline recovery. However, no satisfactory equilibrium data at reservoir conditions have been available for the higher boiling hydrocarbons which acquire abnormal volatility at high pressure and are therefore present in the gas phase in condensate reservoirs. Early work in this field indicated that the behavior of the higher boiling hydrocarbons largely determines the behavior of gas-condensate systems at high pressure.' Consequently, a portable test unit was designed to permit determination of the distribution of the heavier hydrocarbons between the gas and liquid phases of a gas-condensate system. This paper describes the test equipment and presents the results of an investigation of the reservoir fluids from an associated oil and gas reservoir in the Frio formation in Southwest Texas. Also presented is a method for correlation of the experimentally determined equilibrium constants, together with an example of the use of the method in adjusting these data for application to another gas-condensate system of similar composition. FIELD TESTING AND SAMPLING In order to determine the compositions of the reservoir fluids, field samples were secured from two different wells, one completed in the oil zone, and one completed in the gas cap. The oil well was completed through perforations in 51/2-in. casing at a depth of 6,822-6,828 ft subsea. Pressure and temperature traverses made in the well indicated the pressure and temperature to be 3,831 psig and 201 °F, respectively, at a depth of 6.828 ft subsea. Subsurface samples were taken from this well after a four-hour shut-in period.

The production of petroleum in the Mexican fields during 1931 followed the downward trend of the past nine years, with a decline of close to 6,600,000 bbl., or about 17 per cent from the 1930 total. The output was close to 32,964,000 bbl., the Tampico-Tuxpam fields showing the largest actual and proportional decline, while the production of the fields in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec remained practically unchanged. Wildcatting along the international border was carried on more actively than in previous years, the only successful completion being the Alberca No. 1 well located about eight miles from the international boundary, across from Roma, Tex. This well, completed at a depth of 2015 ft. and plugged back to 1550, is rated at about 6,000,000 cu. ft. of gas per day from a horizon between 1330 to 1540 ft., and is now connected to the gas line from the Jennings gas field, Texas, supplying the city of Monterrey. Favorable oil indications have been encountered in other exploratory wells along the border and drilling will probably continue as these lands are largely held under government concessions which require continuous development work in order to retain title. Development in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec has progressed in a systematic manner, the number of successful completions during the year being considerably larger than in the South or Northern fields. The oil pipe line from the south fields to Mexico City has been completed and its operation and that of the Azcapotzalco refinery is expected to begin early in 1932. The construction of this line will Tevolutionize the transportation of petroleum and its products from the fields to the high plateau and seriously affect the revenues of the government-owned railroads. General conditions in the oil industry were reflected in Mexican operations. Low prices and the imminent threat of an American oil tariff discouraged development work necessary to maintain or increase production, and the curtailment of activities resulted in considerable reductions in personnel by all companies. Early in 1932 the Mexican Government announced its intention to create a surface tax or yearly rental on oil lands equivalent to about 31/4 U. S. cents per acre.
