"Conservation of fuel in boiler-plant practice is one of the major projects of the Bureau of Mines. The large central stations with their corps of trained operators and with refined equipment obtain relatively good efficiency. It is in the many smaller isolated plants that the large fuel wastes are apt to occur. Some operators seem to feel that their responsibility is largely expressed in the phase the phase ""carry the load,"" rather than ""carry the load and carry it efficiently."" Often equipment is not provided to give sufficiently accurate guidance to the operator.In within many such plants, it is interesting to note how frequently the same mistakes occur. The following quite typical example illustrates some of these circumstances and their effort on operation. The boiler plant consisted of two 1000 hp. boilers equipped with multiple retort under-feed stokers. These were horizontal water-tube boilers with horizontal baffling, having a high bridge wall at the back of the stoker. One boilers was used to carry a summer carry a winter load of about 1250 hp. The operators felt that one boiler was not sufficient to carry the winter load. No instruments are available for the operator's use, excepting the steam ores sure gases."

In coal room and pillar, and pillar extraction panels, the sidewall conditions were investigated based on underground measurements and numerical simulations. Three-dimensional linear elastic models provided a useful and quick prediction of the amount of sidewall spalling. However, more complex constitutive models were required to simulate more accurately the extent of fracturing and its effect on the stress re-distribution. The input parameters of a Mohr-Coulomb model were determined by back-analysis of underground measurements, and the effect of the depth of the workings and the time dependent occcurrence of coal pillar fracturing were analyzed.

Discussion of the paper of A. L. Sweetser, Tress., xxxviii., 236. CHARLES H. WHITE, Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass. (communication to the Secretary*) :-Those interested in leaching-processes gladly welcome contributions on either laboratory-tests, such as are reported by Mr. Sweetser, or mill-tests made on larger quantities of ore; and especially valuable are such reports, even with negative results, if the methods adopted are the outgrowth of an intimate knowledge of the conditions to be met. It seems very desirable, therefore, that as complete details as possible be given in reporting on such tests, particularly with respect to the character of the ore under examination. The questions of prime importance in the sampling of ore and in the making up of charges for laboratory-tests are those respecting its grade and uniformity. In Mr. Sweetser's paper the first of these questions is answered definitely, but the answer to the second, although apparent on inspection of the results, might be more strongly emphasized with advantage, since it is only on account of the extreme uniformity of the ore that the satisfactory results obtained could have been expected. It seems advisable to call attention to the fact that for average ores, and more particularly for uneven, or 11 spotted ores, the quantities used by Mr. Sweetser are not usually regarded as sufficient to insure satisfactory results. Let us examine the method somewhat in detail. The ore was crushed to pass a 5-mesh screen, and a sample of 45 lb. was taken out for assay and tests. The diameter of the largest grain of this ore, according to Richards,1 was 2.67 mm.-assuming here, as in the following cases, that the wire of the screen was of the largest size used for the purpose, thereby giving any possible advantage in this respect in favor of the method. The table in Richards's book, p. 852, shows that 45 lb. is a sufficient quantity for a fair sample with uniform ores, but not sufficient

VERY little information is available in the literature concerning the solubility of magnesium in titanium. Aust and Pidgeon&apos; report the solubility of titanium in magnesium to be 0.0025 pct at 650°C and 0.015 pct at 850°C. X-ray diffraction studies failed to detect any evidence of solid solubility. Based on the fact that the addition of titanium to magnesium increases the c/a ratio of magnesium, Busk&apos; suggested that the Mg-Ti system, like the Mg-Zr, is a peritectic. Eisenreich- eported the solubility of titanium in magnesium to be 0.003 pct at 655°C and 0.064 pct at 760°C. Removal of hydrogen from the melt increased the solubility of titanium to 0.115 pct at 800°C. Eisenreich proposes a peritectic-type diagram for the high magnesium side of the system. Recent work&apos; with Ti-Mg diffusion couples indicate that the solid solubility of titanium in magnesium is extremely small and that there is limited solid solubility of magnesium in titanium. Experimental work on the Ti-Mg system is complicated by the fact that the boiling point of magnesium is considerably below the melting point of titanium. Consequently, the usual alloying methods are impractical. Alloying was accomplished in this investigation by sheath-rolling compressed compacts." The alloys were made from titanium sponge and high purity magnesium. Chemical analysis of the sponge showed 0.04 pct Mg, <0.005 pct Al, <0.001 pct Cu, 0.05 pct Fe, 0.022 pct Mn, <0.0025 pct Ni, 0.007 pct Si, <0.005 pct V, and <0.01 pct Zn. All heat treating was conducted in a protective atmosphere by encapsulating the specimens in fused silica ampules under a partial pressure of helium. Equilibrium was achieved by holding the specimens at temperature for periods of 24 to 120 hr. The alloys were hot rolled, cold rolled, and annealed prior to solution heat treatment. Fig. 1 shows the constitutional diagram obtained for the Ti-Mg system up to 1.5 pct Mg. Oxygen was known to be present in the alloys; therefore, it is necessary to consider the alloys as ternary rather than binary and the diagram should be viewed as a plot of a section through the Ti-Mg-0 system. Other investigatorso have shown that the addition of oxy- gen to titanium stabilizes the a phase. The data presented in Fig. 1 indicate that the addition of magnesium to titanium tends to stabilize the p phase. Armour Research Foundation7 has shown that the addition of magnesium to zirconium lowers the a transus and is classified as a p stabilizer in that system. Magnesium is soluble in solid titanium to the extent of at least 1.5 pct in both the a and /3 phases. No intermetallic compounds or magnesium-rich phases were observed either by light microscopy or X-ray diffraction. However, this does not negate the possibility that such phases exist at higher alloy concentrations.

IT has long been known that the density of a metal usually decreases with cold-work. Thus O&apos;Neill1 observed as early as 1861 that cold hammering of commercial hot-rolled copper is accompanied by a decrease of density of 0.2 per cent, and that subsequent annealing restores the original density. The origin of this density change, however, has remained obscure. In particular, experiment has not yet decided whether it is due to the presence of small cavities and an increase in intergranular surface or to an actual expansion of the lattice itself. This uncertainty in the origin of the change in density is a reflection of our uncertainty as to the changes induced in a metal by cold-working. One school regards cold-working as a breaking up of the original grains into a large number of perfect crystallites somewhat randomly orientated with respect to one another.2 According to this viewpoint, the mere introduction of a large intercrystallite surface induces a net volume expansion. Another school regards cold-working primarily as a distortion of the grains. It is not obvious that this second viewpoint will lead to a net volume expansion. The purpose of the present paper is to show that this is indeed the case, and that this expansion is of the right order of magnitude to explain existing experimental data. The physical basis for the association of an expansion with distortion lies essentially in the variation of the elastic moduli with volume. This variation is considerable. Thus from Table I we see that a I per cent increase in volume for the case of copper will decrease the bulk modulus K by 10 per cent, the shearing modulus µ by 3.8 per cent. If we thus twist a rod through a given angle, we shall do less work upon it if it increases slightly in volume, thereby reducing the torsion modulus that involves as a factor the shearing modulus. A general principle&apos; in physics states that the rod will so adjust itself as to have a minimum potential energy consistent with the end restraints. It will therefore expand. [ ] In order to obtain a quantitative comparison with experiment, we follow Maier4 in comparing the lattice expansion with the latent energy of cold-work. This latent energy has been measured directly by Taylor and Quinney5 on copper rods subjected to torsion, and may amount to as much as 15 per cent of the total work done upon the specimens. ABSTRACT Berea and Bandera sandstone samples were impacted with both 3/4-in. and 1/2-in. long wedges, each having a 60° included angle and a 0.05-in. flat, at various confining pressures, with borehole and pore pressures held fixed at atmospheric pressure. Samples were saturated with air, water, glycerine-water, solirol, mineral oil and soltrol-mineral oil mixtures to obtain a wide range of pore fluid viscosity. Penetration depth was held constant at 0.1 in. Dry and soltrol-mineral oil-saturated Berea samples were impacted at depths of penetration from 0.01 to 0.04 in. under 1,000 psi confining pressure to study crater initiation. Results indicate that viscosity of the pore fluid is influential primarily during the early stages of crater formation. Differences in bit force, crater volume and blow energy for tests parallel and perpendicular to bedding were significant, but decreased as the stress state was elevated. Crater volume, blow energy and bit force were nonlinearly related with depth of penetration. Crater volume was nonlinear with energy of blow. Fixed-penetration tests on saturated Berea yielded greater crater volume than did similar tests on dry samples. Differences in the nature of deformation for low values of bit penetration were noted between saturated and unsaturated samples. INTRODUCTION Rock failure during bit-tooth impact and scouring action constitutes a vital part of the drilling process and a difficult problem for researchers. Much study has been devoted to various aspects of the problem, and much has been learned about mechanics of rock failure. However, analytical treatment of drilling at depth remains difficult, partly because there are so many factors involved and because valid simulation of downhole conditions is extremely difficult. Forming individual craters by a bit tooth or chisel impacting, or indenting, a rock mass has been studied by many investigators.1-18 Similarity between single-tooth chisel impact and the corresponding action of a rotary bit has been discussed by Appl and Gatley, Garner, Podio, and Gatlin l8 compared the similarity in single-blow impact tests with microbit drilling data reported by Cunningham and Eenink.l9 Maurerll has used single-tooth impact data to develop a "perfect cleaning" theory of rotary drilling. Individual roller cutter-tooth impact data have been reported by Young. 20 Single-tooth tests in all of the cited literature were carried out on dry rocks. Inasmuch as any subsurface rock of oilfield interest is saturated with some fluid, it seemed desirable to study crater formation in permeable rocks saturated with a viscous pore fluid as a step, however short, toward more realistic simulation of subsurface conditions. This paper presents results of single-blow chisel impact studies on Berea and Bandera sandstones, both dry and saturated with pore fluids of various viscosities at confining pressures to 10,000 psi. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS The same basic apparatus for single-blow chisel impact at elevated stress states, described in earlier papers was used in this study. l6. l8 Fig. 1 shows the complete experimental system; Fig. 2 shows a cross section of the pressure cell, with a sample ready to be impacted. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Two different rocks, Berea and Bandera sandstones, were used in this study. Both rocks have been used extensively in research, and rock descriptions can be found in a paper by Gnirk and Cheatham.15 Permeability to air of Berea is about 300 md normal to bedding and 540 md parallel to bedding. Bandera had vertical and horizontal air permeabilities of 18 and 57 md, respectively.

This paper reviews an analytical model that defines the relationship of weight-weighted or volume-weighted average haulage distance with bench height and other related parameters; presents the optimum bench heights under various conditions in terms of minimising the weighted average haulage distance of ore/waste during the full lifetime of an open pit mine, and discusses the truck-haulage economics of mining open pits by high bench, specifically by 15 m, 18 m and 20 m bench through marginal analysis. The observations from these analyses disprove the previous conflicting assertions that the overall weighted average haulage distance either increases or decreases monotonically with bench height. It is concluded that: (i) an increase of bench height to 15 m from 12 m is likely to be viable under the general conditions of large-scale deep open-pit mines; (ii) the reduction of haulage cost is limited with the case of increasing bench height to 18 m from 15 m; and (iii) the feasibility of mining open pits by 20 m benches is generally questionable. These conclusions may serve as a useful guide for those who advocate open pit mining by high benches.

The biggest hard rock double-shield tunnel boring machine (TBM) in the world, with a diameter of 12.4 m, is currently excavating the North-South Bypass, which includes a crossing under the Brisbane River, Brisbane, Australia, to relieve the often congested road traffic in the city centre. Ten years ago a 10.7 m Mixshield giant helped to handle the Olympic Games in Sydney linking the airport with the city centre for an improved transportation of fascinated visitors. In Shanghai, currently the biggest TBM in the world with 15.43 m diameter presents excellent performance rates; and in Paris a convertible Mixshield could be quickly changed from earth pressure balanced (EPB) to slurry type in order to handle the very heterogeneous ground conditions. In Madrid a 15.2 m EPB giant finished its tunnel job four months ahead of schedule. Large-scale TBMs have proved their economic and innovative potential to create the current and future underground architecture of mega-cities. TBM technology has made further large innovative steps in the last decade. State-of-the-art is a TBM for very heterogeneous ground conditions comprising hard and soft rock with additional high groundwater pressure. The machine concept is adapted to the various ground conditions and allows for a quick and flexible application. Ground treatment by means of additives developed to a helpful tool in this connection. To meet the special challenges of urban tunnel projects of nowadays it is of very high importance, beside applying highest developed technology of TBM, to have a comprehensive technical support during the project phase and to develop positive relationships between all participants of the project which last longer than only for one project.

The effects of the slagging components Al2O3, CaO and MgO on the thermodynamics and phase equilibria of the gas/slag/matte system with major elements “Cu2O”-“FeO”-SiO2-S are characterised using an integrated experimental and thermodynamic modelling approach. The experimental technique included high-temperature equilibration experiments using a spinel substrate in controlled gas atmosphere (CO/CO2/SO2/Ar), quenching of the sample and subsequent measurement of the compositions of equilibrium phases with Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis (EPMA). Thermodynamic modelling is undertaken using the computer system FactSage. In previous experimental studies on this system, the separate effects of Al2O3, CaO and MgO were determined. In the present investigation, the combined effects of these additional components are investigated at 1200oC and P(SO2) = 0.25 atm and a range of P(O2)’s. Special attention is paid to ensuring chemical equilibrium is achieved in each case, for this reason possible kinetic factors are systematically analysed. The results obtained are presented in the form of graphs showing the compositions of matte and slag phases as functions of copper concentration (matte grade). The new experimental data are used for the improvement of the thermodynamic database for multicomponent copper-containing systems. The effects of the slagging elements on this multicomponent system will be presented in the paper. INTRODUCTION Whilst Fe-O-Si form the principal components of copper smelting and refining slags, additional impurities are present in industrial practice typically at 2–5 wt.% Al2O3, 1–4 wt.% CaO and 1–2 wt.% MgO levels (Davenport, King, Schlesinger, & Biswas, 2002). These elements are introduced into the slag as impurities in concentrates and other feedstocks, in fluxes added to the process and in refractory materials. Understanding, and accurate description, of the changes that take place in the smelting process in the presence of these additional elements is of major importance to the optimization of industrial operations. Although experimental data are available on slag/copper matte equilibria, further work is needed to accurately characterise the influence of Al2O3, CaO and MgO on phase equilibria and elemental distributions of elements in gas/slag/matte systems. The individual effects of the Al2O3, CaO and MgO slagging components on equilibrium phase assemblages under selected conditions have been quantified in a recent series of studies on the Cu–Fe–O–S–Si-(Al, Ca, Mg) gas-slag-matte-metal system (Fallah- Mehrjardi, Hayes, & Jak, 2018; Fallah-Mehrjardi, Hidayat, Hayes, & Jak, 2017a, 2017b; Hidayat, Fallah-Mehrjardi, Hayes, & Jak, 2018a, 2018b; Jak et al., 2016; D. Shishin, Decterov, & Jak, 2018; Denis Shishin, Hayes, & Jak, 2018). Since, thermodynamically, the condensed phases do not behave ideally, it is to be expected that the effects of individual elements may not be additive, and the additional interactions between the Al2O3, CaO and MgO slagging components will also have to be taken into account. These additional effects are expected to be smaller than those of the individual components, so higher accuracy is needed. The present paper describes analysis of the precision and accuracy of the experimental technique on multi-component, multi-phase equilibria in these systems to enable the combined effects of Al2O3 + CaO + MgO on slag/matte/spinel equilibria, i.e. for high Fe/SiO2, to be accurately measured. The effects of Al2O3, CaO and MgO on the gas - slag - matte are analysed using a thermodynamic modelling approach with the computer package FactSage.

The theory presented ill this paper makes possible examination of the phenomenological aspect of secondary oil recovery by alcohol flooding. Limitutions of the theory are contingent on three primary assumptions: (1) chemical equilibrium, (2) no fingering, and (5) no dispersion. The second assumption implies one-dimensional flow. In a geometric sense the theory extends the Buckley-Leverett construction to systems of two slightly miscible fluids and to systems of three components. This is made possible by considering single-phase fluids to be made up two phases, namely of an excess of one phase and a negative amount of the other phase. The procedure is discussed in the paper. The theory also permits direct determination of the relationship between the aqueous phase saturation and the concentration of water in the aqueous phase in a zone of variable composition. The velocity of planes of constant water concentration and of constant saturation can be computted likewise and the existence of saturation discontinuities inferred. Consequently the behavior of such a Zone, which may exist at some time between a displaced and a displacing fluid, May be determined. mathematical details are given in Appendices. Problems of experimental verification are pointed out on the basis of a supporting experiment. Implications of the theory and effects of violations of primary assumptions are discussed briefly. The major conclusion is that, if the primary assumptions are met, with pure alcohol and alcohol-rich .slugs piston-like displacement of oil and water is possible. INTRODUCTION The recovery of oil from porous media by alcohol displacement has been studied for several years. Extensive experimental investigations into alcohol flooding have been carried out in the laboratory although little has been done in the field. A large amount of practical information is available, the extent being indicated by the first three papers cited 1-3 and their respecrive bibliographies. This has permitted the Formulation of inferential theories. A more analytical approach in which theories are developed primarily by reasoning from known physical principles and relationships has, however, lagged behind. In fact, an analytically derived theory of alcohol displacement has not been available. The theory presented in this paper on oil and water displacement by alcohol from a porous medium is a result of the analytical approach. The theory is idealized, as certain assumptions had to be made to make the mathematics tractable and reduce complexity of argument. In particular, major assuptions concerning conditions of equilibrium, interfacial stability, longitudinal mixing, etc., led to the exclusion of fingering, for example, from all considerations. In many laboratory experiments reported in the literature fingering could not be avoided. There is, therefore, disagreement between theories based on experimental evidence available and the analytically derived theory presented here. This theory presented is based on known physical data and makes use of the Buckley-Leverett construction and its suggested extension. The mathematical derivation of the theory is given in Appendices. Three examples relevant to alcohol displacement are discussed to explain the use of this theory: (1) system of two immiscible fluids (the Buckley-Leverett case); (2) system of two slightly miscible fluids involving an extension of the Buckley-Leverett construction; and (3) system of three components, including injection of pure alcohol or alcohol-rich fluid as a special case, which involves a more general extension of the Buckley-Leverett construction. In these discussions strict assumptions were made to impose equilibrium conditions and exclude mixing and fingering. Effects of relaxing these assumptions and consequent extensions of the theory are indicated. The complexity of the alcohol displacement process makes experimental verification of the theory essential. Some relevant evidence is offered in this paper.

To recycle steelmaking slags for their iron, manganese and lime contents, removal of the phosphorus-bearing dicalcium silicate and calcium phosphate is essential. Slow-cooling of slags was necessary to promote sufficient grain growth to achieve liberation. In situ grain size distribution determination showed that a high soaking temperature, a long soaking time, a very slow cooling rate and the addition of fluorspar promoted grain growth. High gradient magnetic separation on slow-cooled slags removed much of the dicalcium silicate. Liberation modeling was used to discuss the breakage and beneficiation characteristics of the slow-cooled slags.

IN these days the headlines and spotlight have been focused largely upon the new processes developed and new plants erected to meet the multiplied demands for mineral products required for prosecution of the war. By comparison, the less spectacular achievements of the miner, who is meeting the demand for raw material without which these processes and plants would be useless, have received little attention. Attendance at the mining meetings here reported was small, averaging about 35 to 40, but interest was as keen as ever, and evidenced to your reporter that the miner is no less on the job than is the metallurgist. It is evident that the mine operators are not neglecting any improved methods and practices in their struggle to produce more in the face of diminishing labor supply.

"A computational study of the effect of thermocapillary convection on melting of a droplet under the influence of an incident uniform heat flux is presented. The computations are based on an iterative, finite-volume numerical procedure using primitive dependent variables, whereby the time-dependent continuity, momentum and energy equations in the spherical coordinate system are solved. During the early periods of the melting process, conduction mode of heat transfer is dominant. As the thermocapillary convection is strengthened due to the growth of the melt zone, melting on the side of the droplet is observed to be much faster in comparison to the conduction-only case. Due to the skewedness of the temperature field, a new recirculating vortex is created which promotes melting within the droplet. The effects of the change in the sign of the surface-tension temperature coefficient on the melting pattern are also investigated.1. IntroductionMelting and solidification of materials are important processes which are encountered in nature and numerous industrial applications. Due to the recent upsurge of interest in such processes as spray casting, space radiators, rapid solidification, purification of materials, containerless processing, etc., there is a need to analyze the transport phenomena of melting and solidification in spherical configurations. Specifically, the effect of thermocapillary convection on the melting of metallic droplets has not been addressed at all. Only a few authors have studied the transport phenomena without phase change in spherical droplets. Oliver and DeWitt [l] worked out a series solution for the thermal and surface-tension-driven flow fields for a droplet experiencing an irradiant energy flux in the microgravity environment. Kudo et al. [2] solved the coupled momentum and energy equations numerically for the same problem without dropping the convective terms. Due to the nonexistence of any previous work on transport phenomena during the thermocapillary-assisted melting of metal droplets, this study was initiated to elucidate the features of the phenomenon."

FoR the past eight years No. 2 mine of the Cumberland Railway & Coal CO., Springhill, Nova Scotia—a subsidiary of the Dominion Coal Co., Ltd.—has had an unenviable reputation for bumps. As the workings extended in certain directions under a greater cover, these bumps increased in severity and it became apparent that some change in the system of extraction was necessary if the mine was to continue to operate. In September, 1924, following several fatalities resulting from bumps, the Mines Department of Nova Scotia requested from the U. S. Bureau of Mines the services of George S. Rice, Chief Mining Engineer of the Bureau, to report on the conditions then prevalent in No. 2 mine, Springhill. This request was promptly and courteously granted. Mr. Rice made a full investigation and a comprehensive and helpful report, which is embodied in the 1924 Annual Report of the Department of Public Works and Mines, Nova Scotia. Prior to 1925, the room and pillar method was employed and in January of that year (there being a cessation of work from March to August due to labor troubles) longwall retreating on the west side, on a limited scale, and in a small section on the east side of the mine was started. The major portion of the east side was not operated on this system till August, 1926, as there was developed a considerable area ready for pillar extraction between an arbitrary boundary and a point up to which bumps of any consequence had not been experienced. In the interval development work for longwall retreating below the 5900-ft. level was vigorously pushed. This longwall retreating system was suggested by Mr. Rice as a possible remedy and was heartily endorsed by the company officials. This paper describes the conditions and happenings subsequent to Mr. Rice&apos;s report and more especially the results with the longwall retreating system of mining under the peculiar circumstances pertaining to mining No. 2 Seam, Springhill, at depth, and records the conclusions which experience with several severe bumps under this mode of extraction would suggest. Except where necessary to make the paper intelligible as an entity any duplication of Mr. Rice&apos;s report will be avoided.

It is well known that in most areas of Central Europe it is not difficult to find water - usually at shallow depths - and to recover and use this water. What is much more difficult, however, is to find water sources that offer both sufficient in quantity and qual- ity. Far too often, there are sources that offer abundant quantities but of poor quality or vice versa, i.e. high quality water but insufficient volumes. In the former case where water quality is not adequate - which is more often than not due to anthropogenic factors and only very rarely a result of geogenic effects - the application of treatment techniques can help to turn such water into potable water that is suitable for human con sumption.

Columbium, carbon. and nickel additions were made to iron-base alloys with 20 pct CY. The effects on microstructure, precipitation-hardening characteristics, and High-temperature properties were investigated by means of metallographic, hot-hardness, and magnetic measurements. An austenitic alloy consistilzg of Fe-20Cr-14Ni-0.8C-2.5Cb had higher hot-lzaciness at 1700°F than the other alloys investigated. Its favorable standing is attributed to an enhanced interaction of Cb and Cr4C particles dispersed within a stable austenitic matrix. FOR the past 20 years, cobalt- and nickel-base alloys have been used for the more stringent high-temperature applications because of their excellent creep resistance. Although their performance is quite satisfactory, other base materials must be considered for large tonnage, low-cost applications such as for the automotive gas turbine. Iron-base alloys are also used extensively, but at somewhat lower temperatures, primarily because of the instability of particles or because precipitation occurs at relatively low temperatures. Since unusual stability has been reported for Fe-Cb and Cb-C compounds.1-3 it was hoped that effective amounts of these compounds could be taken into solution at temperatures just below the melting range, then precipitated upon reheating. Actually, strengthening was found to occur by both precipitation hardening in some alloys and by phase transformations in others. Among the alloys investigated, that with the best high-temperature properties owes its strengthening to a combination of carbide particle interaction and a relatively stable austenitic matrix. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Small preliminary melts of about 100 g were made in a vertical Glotube furnace, using alundum crucibles and an argon atmosphere. Alloys weighing 35 lb were melted in a basic-lined induction furnace, also under argon. The compositions of the alloys are given in Table I. The nickel-free alloys were usually ferritic, while those containing nickel were generally austenitic. Depending upon the particular heat treatments, or the combination of alloying elements, two-phase alloys of ferrite and austenite could be obtained. In the following text, however, the nickel-free or nickel-bearing alloys are referred to simply as either ferritic or austenitic alloys respectively. The small ingots were swaged at 2000°F, in steps, to rods of approximately 3/16-in. diam. The large ingots were forged at 2100°F to 1-in. sq bars. No difficulties were encountered in swaging or forging any of the alloys to as much as 90 pct reduction in area. For heat treating at temperatures above 2000°F, specimens were sealed in quartz tubes under a partial pressure of helium. No special precautions were found to be necessary at lower temperatures. Intermetallic compounds in the preliminary alloys were identified by means of X-ray diffraction measurements. Correlation of these results with micro-structural characteristics (such as color, shape, size, and location) of the compounds aided in their identification. Coconut shells are the most widely used raw material for the production of activated carbon used in the gold production by cynanide leaching. There have been efforts to find alternatives to coconut shells. Shells and stones of certain fruits, have been tested. Although promising results to some extent were obtained, coconut shells remain the main source of activated carbon. Türkiye has become a country of interest in terms of gold deposits of epithermal origin. Four deposits have already been discovered and, mining and milling operations are expected to start in the near future. Explorations are underway in many other areas of high expectations. Türkiye is also rich in fruits which can be a valuable source of raw material for activated carbon production. In this study, hazelnut shells, peach and apricot stones, abundantly available locally, have been tested to determine whether they are suitable for the gold metalurgy. Parameters of carbonization and activation have been optimized. Gold loading capacity and adsorption kinetics have been studied.

Vanadium slag production in the shaking ladles started in April 1968, steelmaking was begun in July 1968 and the first continuously cast blocks were produced soon after on the 29th July, 1968. Nominal monthly production of over 20 000 tons was reached in seven months and by December 1970 about 12 000 heats were cast and a monthly production of 35000 tons has been achieved.

Longwall mining originated in the early 18th century in the county of Shropshire in England, where it was known as the longway method. Its name implies the extraction of the seam over a long continuous length or wall of exposed coal. Until the late 19608 and early 1970s the use of the longwall system with a few exceptions was confined to the United Kingdom and Europe. It was not until the early 19708 that the highly productive longwall faces we now know, were developed and the application of the longwall system extended to Australia, South Africa, United states of America and other parts of the world. The modern longwall face has three major components, namely: +&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; the machine to break and load the coal +&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; the face conveyor; +&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; and a system of roof support. &nbsp; This paper reviews the development of longwall mining technology. The parameters directly influencing the production &apos;of a modern longwall face are considered, as are the possible constraints to the further development of the longwall system.
