"During the calendar year 1925 the Bureau of Mines received from the operators of several hundred mines and quarries complete accident records covering deaths, permanent disabilities, and “lost time” temporary injuries. Some of the companies, - those that participated in the National Safety Competition-also furnished information showing the number of man-hours of work performed during the year. With these two types of information it was possible to calculate the accident-frequency and accident-severity rates of the different plants. Complete and comparable reports of accidents and Man-hours of “exposure” were received from 34 underground metal mines, 59 underground coal mines, 15 underground mines producing other nonmetallic minerals, and 102 open quarries or open-pit mines. The figures in the table appended to this report show the accident severity rates and other data for each of the 34 underground metal mines and for the group as a whole. It is proposed to publish similar figures for the other classes of mines and quarries at an early date.The 34 metal mines listed in the table are situated in Arizona, Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota., and Utah; they employed 5, 925 men, an average of 174 men per mine, including employees above-ground as well as underground. With but few exceptions, 50 men was the minimum number of employees in any mine. The total period of employment or “exposure” at the 34 mines was 14,612,607 man-hours, an average of 2,466 hours per man, or the equivalent of 308 work-days of eight hours for each employee. Accidents resulted in 15 fatalities, 9 permanent disabilities, and 1,950 temporary “lost time” injuries (causing disability exceeding remainder of shift). The fatal and nonfatal injuries represented 132,575 days of disability. Thus the accident frequency rate for the group was 135 accidents per million hours and the accident severity rate was 9.073 days lost per thousand hours of 1 “exposure”. The severity rates ranged from 0.227 to 88.653, while the ·range of the accident-frequency rates was from 16. 6 to 307 .4. In compiling the accident severity rates shown in the table, all accidents caused by explosives were weighted at twice the number of days actually lost, as one of the purposes of the National Safety Competition was to stress the prevention of accidents caused by explosives."

Removal of metal ions from effluents represents a significant technical challenge. As a consequence several industries, including mining, are faced with issues relating to removal of contaminant cations and anions from solution. This study evaluates three natural mineral materials referred to as basalt, scoria, and calcined shale for treatment of metal contaminated effluents by adsorption. Adsorption tests were conducted to asses the possibility of removing cationic and anionic metal ions from prepared solutions and mine water effluents. Sustainable production of industrial minerals requires that a diverse range of added value products be introduced.

Flotation of chalcopyrite and unactivated malachite with xanthates (ethylxanthate, butylxanthate, octylxanthate and dodecylxanthate) is studied in this paper. Minerals interacted with xanthates are detected by FTIR, and simulated by molecular mechanics. It shows that chalcopyrite can be floated with 4 kinds of xanthates, and unactivated malachite can?t be floated with ethylxanthate but can be floated directly with later 3 kinds of xanthates while characteristic absorption peaks of those four kinds of xanthates are all detected by FTIR on chalcopyrite and malachite surface. After simulating the interaction between xanthate and mineral, it shows that H2O and OH-can interact with chalcopyrite and malachite, and their interaction energy may be so called energy bulwark which must be overcome by collector when collector interacts on minerals; the two sulfur atoms in xanthate group interact with copper and neighbor iron atoms on chalcopyrite. It also shows that molecular mechanics results with logP of collectors can interpret the mechanism of xanthate-mineral on atom scale.

In an effort to improve the performance of the explosive-anchored rock bolt, the Bureau of Mines studied the effect of the detonation velocity of the explosive and type of charge (linear or nonlinear) on the fracturing tendency of the anchor tube. Also, different types of tubing were compared to determine the one most suitable for use as an anchor tube. The Bruceton up-and-down method was applied in tests in which steel shooting blocks having boreholes ranging from 1-3/8 to 2-1/8 inches in diameter were used. Of the four types of tubing evaluated, a welded A-178 tubing that was drawn over a mandrel and renormalized gave the most promising results. The A-179 seamless tubing that is normally used with the explosive bolt was the most inferior. Both types, however, gave significantly better anchorage than the conventional shell when tested in both laboratory and underground experiments. Within the range of velocities studied (5,000 to 7,000 m/sec), the type of explosive showed no significant effect on anchor-tube performance. In general; linear explosive charges provided better anchorage than nonlinear charges.

The control of industrial grinding circuits in Australian concentrators has been practised for many years in one form or another. Some have established simple feedback loops in areas such as fine ore bin feeders (tonnage control), mill pump sump levels (flow control) and water additions (density control). There are also some sophisticated systems which infer circuit product size using complex measurements of mass flaws and water additions in the circuit and attempts are made to control those flaws to produce a constant circuit product size. The inferred size method in Australian concentrators has become firmly entrenched in the last ten years and control techniques involving the use of direct size measurements with reliable on-stream sizers have been Ignored.

Sample sizing in the iron ore industry requires significant manual effort to collect, transport, and sieve the samples as well as record, process and report the data. Efforts have been made to automate this process, which essentially emulate the manual process, except that a person is replaced by a robot. Even in these cells, the sieving and sizing operation consumes a significant proportion of robot time. The proposed doubling of production from AustraliaÆs iron ore mines over the next five years will place increasing pressure on sample sizing and interest is increasing in alternative automated methods. One such method is the adaptation of computer vision technology which has been successfully introduced into the mining industry in a range of applications including feed size distribution to SAG mills and oversize detection from screening stations. The limitation of this technology is that only the top surface is visible and this is used as an indicator of total size distribution. Obviously in a sample plant, where 100 per cent of the sample must be measured for acceptable quality assurance, this approach is unacceptable. In order to capture 100 per cent of the sample using computer vision technology a monolayer must be formed either by spreading the sample across a moving surface, such as a conveyor or vibrating platform, and passing this under a camera. This will become a æsurgingÆ load which presents specific problems for some types of computer vision systems, namely those relying on a 2D approach. In this paper a 3D computer vision technology will be described which overcomes the problems associated with measuring particle size in a monolayer and experimental results will be presented which demonstrate its effectiveness for lump and fine iron ore sample size measurement.

Patentiometric model data have been obtained to estimate the effect of vertical fractures on the areas swept after breakthrough in water flooding and miscible displacement programs such as gas cycling where the mobility is near one, The data are presented for the case of the fire-spot pattern in which the cemer well is fractured various lengths and orientations, the data indicate that for 10-acre spacing, fractures extetidirrg over 1300 ft in either directior1 from the fractured well may re.srrlt in reductions in sweep efficiencics from 72 to approximately 34 per cent. However. the area swept after break through may be quite largr and only 10 or 12 per cent 1ess than would be obtained if the reservoir were trot fractured. For the specific case when the volume of fluid injected is equivalent to 100 per cent of the pattern vol-unie, the swent area may vary from 80 to 88 per cent, depending on the lenght of the fracture. The former value is that which occurs when the break through or sweep efficiency was orrly 34 per cent and the latter figrrre of 88 per cent is that which is obtained if the reservoir were unfrac-ttm'd. It is pointed out that although the sweep efficiency may he very low in vertically fractured five-spot patterrz.s, the area swept at low water-oil ratios may be only 5 to 10 per cent less than those achieved if the reservoir were unfractured. INTRODUCTION Since the initiation of commercial reservoir fracturing techniques it has been desirable to determine the effect of fractures on the areas swept after breakthrough. Most water flooding or gas cycling projects are continued for substantial periods after the brcakthrough of the injected fluid. Although the sweep efficiency serves as one criterion for rating various flooding patterns. the area swept after breakthrough for various water-oil ratios or percentage wet gas, if cycling. is of perhaps more importance than the sweep efficiency alone. Sweep efficiency data on the vertically fractured five-spot have been presented3. Previous work on the line-drive pattern has shown the effect of vertical fractures on the area swept after breakthrough for the case in which the distance between injection and producing wells divided by the distance between adjacent input wells was equivalent to 1.5 (see lief. 2). The data indicated that for the line-drive pattern it may be desirable to flood or cycle substantially perpendicular to the fractures in order to achieve the greatest recovery for the smallest volume of fluid injected. For this study the center well of a five-spot is assumed as the fractured well. All fractures were assumed to originate at this well and extend into the reservoir for various distances and orientations. All the fractures are straight and are of large permeability compared to the matrix proper. These data are presented to aid the engineer in estimating fractured five-spot pattern performance. ANALOGY The potentiometric model was used in making this study. The model used was 20 20 in. by approximately 1-in. deep. For certain portions of the study one corner of this model was considered to be an injection well and the opposite corner a production well. To simulate vertical fractures a copper sheet was soldered to the wire well and made to conform to the desired length and orientation. In other studies the same model was used except that the four corners of the model might be considered as the corner wells of a five-spot pattern and a fifth well was placed in the center of the model. The well placed in the center of the model was fractured. The total fracture length is L and the well spacing. d. The complimentary fracture angles will be obvious from Figs. 3 and 4. The data obtained on the potentio-metric model assumes the pay to be uniform and homogeneous, the mobility ratio is one, steady-state conditions exist and gravity effects arc neglected. The permeability of the fractures is very great compared to that of the matrix proper. The po-tentiometric model has been used widely both in water flooding and gas cycling projects, and may be used for miscible displacement; how-ever. it is believed that the poten-tiometric model data are more properly applicable to gas cycling than water flooding because the model as-

Background of Ocean Mining Research Inspired by the 1970?s deep seabed mining activities of other nations, China started ocean mining research work within the framework of the International Law of the Sea Treaty (UNCLOS) and the subsequent establishment of the International Seabed Authority in the 1990?s. This work has been carried out mainly with the cooperation of the Changsha Research Institute of Mining And Metallurgy. We have been committed to this work to fulfill our responsibilities and obligations as a Pioneer investor under UNCLOS and also to support the much needed development of deep-sea technology in China. Exciting recent advances by Nautilus Minerals in the development of seafloor massive sulfide deposit exploitation has led us to a new perspective of ocean mining and some re-evaluation of ocean mining economics. This has provided us with an opportunity to support more efforts in ocean mining research. We will not delay the development of our ocean mining system and corresponding technology, although commercial mining in the deep-sea area may not occur for many years.

Laboratory and plant data covering 12 different operations show that lower than "standard" ball mill speeds increase grinding efficiency. In the case of high pulp-level mills, the gain is so great that the increase in capital cost of the larger lower speed mill will pay for itself in less than a year's time.

"Nickel-metal hydride batteries (Ni-MH) are storers of electrochemical energy, which have a higher specific storage capacity than lead or nickel-cadmium batteries. The demand for Nickel-metal hydride batteries is increasing rapidly since their market launch in the early 1990’s. Today there is no suitable and sustainable recycling process to recover nickel, cobalt and rare-earth metals. The discarded batteries are used today in the steel industry as alloy material because they contain nickel. Cobalt and rare-earth metals (RE) are lost; they are non-recycleable.In a German governmental funded research project, IME Aachen, ACCUREC Mühlheim and UVR-FIA Freiberg are cooperating in processing as well as in creating a feasibility study. The target of this project is the development of a new recycling process for metal recovery from Ni-MH-batteries. The proposed process described in this paper consists of a combination of mechanical, pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processing steps. This process is capable of treating all types of Ni-MH-batteries. After comminution steel and organics are separated. The separated Ni-MH is smelted in an electric arc furnace. The products are a nickel-cobalt alloy and a slag phase enriched with rare-earth oxides for further treatment to ‘mischmetal’. Both the Nickel-Cobalt alloy and the ‘mischmetal’ will be directly used in battery production."

"Abstract - Traditionally, the emphasis in ore and reserve inventory has been to provide fairly simple definitions and presentations for reporting to shareholders and the investing public. The recent introduction of the mineral resource category aims to take into account the "part of the deposit that cannot yet be produced or extracted legally and profitably." Recent proposals still place insufficient emphasis on relating resource/reserve reporting definitions more closely to the needs of mining and exploration operators for the estimation and inventory of these basic material assets.In most schemes, significant ambiguities and shortcomings remain. These concern the potential economic interest of resources, the concept of continuity which is fundamental to the estimation of volumes, mass and grades, the objectives of the production feasibility study and the requirements of the geology, engineering and economic appraisals leading to it, and the "availability" of the permits required to start mine development. Up to now, no industry-wide formal consensus has yet been reached for any of these steps, nor for reconciliation between successive statements.A resource/reserve inventory scheme is presented here that is based on ISO 9000 principles and the Australasian system. Explicit criteria and transition points are proposed to define resource and reserve. Similarly, appropriate criteria are proposed to classify the three mineral resource and two ore reserve categories, based on geological and value continuity and on the objectives of the feasibility study. This scheme offers a way to develop ISO 9001 certification of resource/reserve estimation procedures for mining operations and supply exploration companies with an appropriate inventory system, to allow better information for the shareholders and the investing public.Résumé - L’objectif des inventaires des minerais et des réserves est, depuis le début du siècle, de fournir des définitions simples et d’ordre général visant les actionnaires et le public investisseur. L’introduction d’une catégorie de « ressources minérales » fournira un cadre tenant compte de la "portion d’un gisement qui ne peut encore être extraite ou exploitée légalement et à profit." Cependant, les propositions récentes de systèmes d’inventaires ne comportent pas des définitions des ressources et réserves qui tiennent compte suffisamment des besoins des opérateurs en exploitation et en exploration minière.La plupart des systèmes comportent des ambiguïtés et des carences. Citons la susceptibilité d’exploitation commerciale des ressources, la continuité qui est au centre de l’estimation des volumes, masses et teneurs, les objectifs de l’étude de la faisabilité de la mise en production, le niveau requis des travaux de géologie, d’ingénierie et d’économique qui y mènent, ainsi que la disponibilité des permis dont dépend la mise en production. Il n’y a jusqu’à maintenant aucun consensus dans l’industrie sur ces points, ni sur des procédures de réconciliation entre les estimations successives.Le système d’inventaire des ressources/réserves proposé ici s’appuie sur la structure ISO 9000 et le système australien. Des critères et des points tournants explicites sont établis pour définir les ressources et les réserves. De même, les définitions des trois catégories de ressources et deux catégories de réserves, s’apparent sur la continuité de la géologie et des teneurs et sur les objectifs de l’étude de la faisabilité. ABSTRACT A comprehensive program of air flush core and reverse circulation drilling, trial mining and beneficiation test work was carried out in 1980-1982 to re-assess the potential of the Mitchell Plateau bauxite deposit. The results generally confirm previous work by Amax Corporation. The bauxite is a medium available alumina and reactive silica deposit which responds well to wet screen beneficiation. High grade pockets have developed locally, with the potential for refractory grade extraction. A major feasibility study of the Mitchell Plateau bauxite deposit was completed in 1983. Due to the unexpected severity of the downturn in the alumina market, development of the project has been deferred.

IN treating carnotite ores by carbonate leaching it is often necessary to subject the ore to a prior roast. Among the advantages that may result from roasting are: 1) improvement in settling and filtering characteristics of the ore; 2) destruction of carbonaceous impurities that would otherwise contaminate the leach solution and consume carbonate reagent; and 3) substantial increase in extraction of vanadium, which is usually low when the un- roasted ore is leached. Recovery of vanadium may be an important factor in processing carnotite ores, and the fact that vanadium is usually recovered in good yield by acid leaching has often been an economic advantage over results obtained with carbonate leaching. It has been found that response of an ore to carbonate leaching, following roasting, depends primarily on its composition and on the conditions of the prior roast treatment, particularly with regard to the roasting temperature, the atmosphere maintained above the charge during roasting and cooling, and the presence of certain reagents. These factors, especially the last, virtually determine the extractions of uranium and vanadium attainable by carbonate leaching, as well as the reagent consumption on leaching, whereas adjustment of the leaching conditions has only a limited influence.

Leaders have invested heavily in traditional safety management to improve safety performance over the years. This primarily involved: • fixing the environment (eliminating the hazard) • improving the system (more/less rules, procedures etc) • making safety more conscious (more/better interactions about the importance of safety). These approaches have helped improve safety performance significantly during the last 50 years and will continue to play a role in the future. Although these approaches may be part of an overall solution, they are not enough to prevent many incidents. Today, these three approaches are used more than before, and are used better than ever before. Yet, workplace fatalities in Australia have stagnated from 2013 to 2019, as have the number of incidents, even serious ones. In the USA, workplace fatalities have increased by 15 per cent in the same period.

"RésuméL’analyse des séquences d’exploitation, actuellement en usage pour les gisements très inclinés, a démontré qu’elles ne sont pas toujours optimales du point de vue du contrôle des terrains et de la concentration des travaux d’abattage (nombre de chantiers simultanément en opération). Effectivement plusieurs séquences sont très propices à la création des nombreuses zones de hautes contraintes, qui sont à l’origine des effets de pilier. L’étude de cas de la mine Lac Shortt a démontré que certaines séquences d’exploitation, actuellement en usage, ne sont surtout pas adéquates dans le cas d’un état élevé des contraintes naturelles. En effet la mine a eu de sérieuses problèmes avec le contrôle des terrains (coups de terrains et les effondrements des épontes). Ces effondrements étaient responsables de la dilution excessive et des pertes importantes des réserves minières. Les deux nouvelles séquences proposées, visent la meilleure redistribution des contraintes d’exploitation en vue d’éliminer la création des effets de pilier. En plus elles permettent une concentration plus élevée des travaux d’abattage.À notre avis les séquences proposées pourraient améliorer substantiellement la stabilité des chantiers d’abattage et par la suite les performances technique et économique des opérations souterraines. ABSTRACTThe planning of underground mining sequences represents an important aspect of the mining operation. The analysis of mining sequences actually in use for very steep orebodies has demonstrated that they are not always optimal, considering ground control and the number of stopes simultaneously in extraction. These sequences are conducive to the creation in the rockmass of several stressed zones caused by pillar effects. The case study of Lac Shortt mine showed that the sequences of exploitation currently in use are not adequate especially in the case of a high state of the natural constraints. Indeed, the mine had serious problems with ground control (rock bursts and collapse of walls). These collapses were responsible for excessive dilution and significant losses of mining reserves. The two new sequences suggested aim for the best redistribution of exploitation constraints in order to eliminate creation of pillar effects. Moreover, they allow a higher number of stopes to be extracted simultaneously. In the opinion of the authors, the sequences suggested could substantially improve the stability of working areas and, thereafter, technical and economical performances of the underground operations."

AN outstanding development in the field of education for the mineral industries during the past year has been an unprecedented eagerness by young men for college training in this field. The enrollment of students in the 53 mineral technology schools in the United States in 1936-'37 reached the all- time high of 7190. This represented an increase of 43 per cent in two years and was about ten per cent of all engineering students. Of these 7190 students only 980 graduated and were available - for positions in the industry. That the supply of graduates did not equal the demand can be substantiated by every school dean and by the personnel agents of many mining, metallurgical, and petroleum companies. As part of its goal to minimize the requirements for critical and strategic minerals, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research to foster the use of domestically abundant materials such as molybdenum. This report describes the development of an investment shell molding technique that can be used to make castings of molybdenum and its alloys. The mold material is cubic Zr02 with a monoclinic Zr02 binder. The shell, formed by standard investment molding techniques described in the text, is prepared for molybdenum casting by firing for 6 hours at 1,550° C (2,822° F) or for 4 hours at 1,650° C (3,002° F). The resulting castings have predictable and reproducible dimensions with good detail. As-cast strength is poorer than the strength of wrought materials below 1,600° F. At and above this temperature, tensile strengths of cast and wrought materials are nearly equal. Aqueous corrosion of the castings in most media is insignificant.

Thermodynamics and rate process fundamentals are two of the important principles involved in nonferrous production processes. The process configuration establishes whether thermodynamics or rate process behavior is most relevant in a particular application. In this paper, thermodynamic theory and rate process fundamentals are used to analyze the main characteristics of smelting and converting processes. The effect of increased oxygen potential .is examined with emphasis in view of the increased use of highly oxygen-enriched gas in modem smelting processes. Phase equilibrium and the distribution of minor elements between copper or nickel matte and FeOx-SO2- or FeOx-CaO-based slag are reviewed. The use of oxygen-rich gas has no serious effects on 'the recovery of valuable copper and silver in the matte phase, while the recovery of nickel and cobalt is adversely affected. The oxygen content in the gas also strongly affects the distribution behavior of arsenic, antimony and bismuth. Analysis of the rate processes occurring in the shaft of flash smelting, and converting furnaces by a 3-D computational fluid-dynamics model is also discussed. After being validated with experimental data collected in a large laboratory furnace, the computer model has been used to simulate the main features of an industrial flash converting operation. The results present quantitative features of the improved mixing of the particle-gas suspension and increased oxygen efficiency obtained with a distributor-cone burner compared with those with a single axial entry burner. The role of basic principles in the engineering analysis of high-intensity matte smelting processes is also discussed.

An investigation was conducted to determine types of particles that tend to be recovered in concentrates by mineral beneficiation. It was found that, in concentrates of the same grade the proportion of desired mineral occurring as apparently liberated grains varies widely. In contrast the proportion is nearly constant when the grains considered are apparently liberated grains plus unliberated grains in particles composed largely of the desired mineral. It was also found that the types of particles which tend to be recovered in concentrates are dependent upon the concentrate grade. Hence it is much more important to determine the characteristics of recoverable particles and to measure the percentage of mineral that occurs in recoverable particles. than to measure the percentage of totally liberated mineral. A relationship between concentrate grade and type of particle that tends to be recovered in concentrates was established.
