Rocks of the Precambrian Shield of Rusk County, Wis., were recognized as a favorable host for volcanogenic base metal deposits by personnel of Bear Creek Mining Co. Most of the county is covered by a thick layer of glacial drift: consequently, geophysical techniques played a prominent role in the exploration program conceived and initiated there in 1966. The original work on three Precambrian exposures was followed by an airborne electromagnetic survey and subsequent ground follow-up. A geophysical evaluation of air-borne anomaly F-22 defined a target which was interpreted as a massive sulfide body. Numerous potential field and electrical tools were utilized to describe the geometry and physical properties of the target. Drilling confirmed the massive sulfide interpretation and eztentually outlined a 6 million-ton copper deposit.

Gold mining in the Yellowknife area of the Northwest Territories started long before the concept of sustainability entered the academic literature and by the time the term enjoyed widespread public acceptance, the Yellowknife gold mining industry was in its sunset years. Nevertheless, the city of Yellowknife will long outlive the gold mines that it was founded on, demonstrating that not only can mining build sustainable communities, but that sustainable mining as a concept is an entirely valid precept. To this effect, the authors examine the complex economic and social aspects of the gold mining industry in the Yellowknife area over the last 70 years.

Gwalia Consolidated Ltd has been in the mining industry for about 15 years, yet its key wholly owned Greenbushes Mine has a history dating back to the last century. Similarly Gwalia Consolidated's associate, Sons of Gwalia Ltd owns the historic Sons of Gwalia and Marvel Loch Mines with Sons of Gwalia celebrating its centenary this year. This durability is a testament to the quality of the orebodies concerned and the massive technological achievements over this time which have enabled each of these mines to maintain their competitiveness. While Sons of Gwalia and Marvel Loch were and continue to be gold mines, the wholly owned Greenbushes Mine has survived and in fact prospered through the development of alternative products from its rich and unique pegmatite. Similarly, for Gwalia Consolidated to grow and prosper it will be necessary to expand the current portfolio of products and operations. The Greenbushes Mine has already given Gwalia world `No 1' status in both the supply of primary tantalite concentrates and lithium minerals (spodumene). The asset base contributed by Gwalia's gold investments assisted in the recapitalisation of the Greenbushes assets to fully develop their potential. Industrial minerals and strategic metals were of interest to Gwalia as these markets are relatively small and it is possible to develop an influential if not dominant position in the market with a quality asset. Capital expenditure to develop such projects are also usually in the order of $10 m to $20 m, a manageable range relative to Gwalia's size.

INTRODUCTION The role of comminution and related unit operations in mineral processing applications is of major importance. This is especially true in terms of operating costs, since these unit operations represent the major fraction of the overall processing costs. Due to the broad scope and the large number of unit processes and machines involved, Section 3 is divided into five subsections. In Section 3A, General Aspects of Comminution, topics covered include history, terminology, particle¬size distributions, classes of comminution machines, testing and calcu¬lation procedures, and simulation and modeling. In Section 3B, Crush¬ing. the subjects include jaw crushers, gyratory crushers, cone crushers, hammermills, and impactors. The chapters of Section 3C, Grinding, cover aspects common to tumbling mills, ball mills, rod mills, autogenous mills, pebble mills, roller mills, fluid energy mills, other types of grinding machines, and grinding costs. Section 3D, Classification, coverage includes classification theory, hydrocyclones, and mechanical classifiers, and in Section 3E, Screening, the topics presented are classes of screens, selection of vibrating screens, sieve bend screens, and screening media. About five years after the Handbook was begun, Section 3 was unfortunately without an editor or contributors for over half of the chapters. A committee was then organized to expedite completion of the section. When this committee contacted the persons who had agreed to contribute to the section, it was found that many of them wished to resign from their earlier voluntary obligation to AIME. Therefore the committee had to find new contributors for these chap¬ters in addition to other chapters in Section 3. Since there had been no previous effort to locate contributors for Air Classification, Dust Collection, and Washing and Scrubbing, it was agreed to delete these subsections. In Section 3, equipment availability, capacity, and performance data from various manufacturers and users are provided for engineer¬ing use. Selected data from existing installations are also included. The machines that are being used in comminution, classification, and screening are described in detail, and drawings, photographs, and diagrams are presented to supplement the descriptive material. The editors thank and acknowledge the generous effort of the many contributors, some of whom were called upon five or more years after the Handbook was started. It is regretted that Fred C. Bond, who was a member of the committee formed to complete this section, was deceased before the section was finished. During the time that he worked with the committee, he contributed a great deal as an author and councilor.

The fundamental mechanism of the deformation of zinc has been thoroughly described by several prominent investigators, particularly Mark, Polanyi, and Schmid,1 Mathewson and Phillips,2 and Schmid and Wassermann.3 The deformation of zinc occurs primarily through slip along basal planes (00.11, and secondarily through twinning on pyramidal planes of the form (10.2). In addition to these basic studies on single crystals, there have been a number of determinations4,5 of preferred orientations developed in rolled, polycrystalline zinc. In no case, to our knowledge, has there been described the development of oriented structures in zinc as a result of a systematic series of rolling treatments. The work included in the present paper shows the changes in orientation produced in a zinc alloy by successively increasing degrees of cold-rolling reduction. This alloy has the same crystal form, hexagonal close-packed, as zinc, but its susceptibility to hardening for a given degree of working is much greater because of its higher recrystal-lization temperature. Experimental Procedure Composition of the Alloy and Rolling Treatment The alloy used in this investigation consisted of zinc of 99.9 per cent purity to which 1 per cent of copper and 0.01 per cent of magnesium had been added.

Contamination introduced by the impurities from the feed stream can impact the PEM fuel cell performance dramatically. The presence of these unwanted trace species such as CO, H2S, NH3, can adversely affect the fuel cell functioning. It has been reported that the major impact of CO and H2S contamination on the fuel cell performance is kinetic while the effect of NH3 contamination is speculated as membrane conductivity reduction only. In this paper, a model regarding the NH3 contamination is described and the mechanism of the NH3 contamination is illuminated by the model calculations.

In November, 1926, the American Engineering Standards Committee (now the American Standards Association) called a meeting of representatives of various professional societies and industrial, educational and governmental organizations to consider what action, if any, should be taken on the classification of North American coals. This meeting was called because a system for the use classification of coal, proposed by George H. Ashley, had been referred to the committee by the Coal Mining Institute of America. This meeting, at Pittsburgh, was well attended and was definitely in favor of taking up the whole question of scientific and use classification of coals, including all the various ranks from lignite to anthracite. The American Society for Testing Materials was recommended as the sponsor organization to take charge of the work and organize the sectional committee according to the rules of the American Standards Association. The American Society for Testing Materials proceeded with the organization of the sectional committee, holding a meeting in Philadelphia, June 10, 1927. Officers were elected, regulations adopted, and general plans for carrying out the work were outlined. The total membership of 28 comprising the sectional committee consists of 8 producers, 2 distributors, 9 consumers and 9 members representing general and scientific interest. From this committee three technical committees of 10 to 12 members each were organized: Scientific Classification, H. J. Rose, chairman; Use Classification, W. H. Fulweiler, chairman; Marketing Practice, F. R. Wadleigh, chairman. The Technical Committee on Scientific Classification was requested to formulate a system of coal classification based on chemical and physical properties of coal and with reference to origin and constitution. The Technical Committee on Use Classification was charged with developing a system of classification, if possible, based primarily on the uses of coal and commercial practice; this system to be correlated with the scientific system as far as possible and desirable. The Technical Commitlee on Marketing Practice was formed to collect and collate information on commercial practice for the benefit of the other two committees. The addition of cement to underground backfill at The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited, Broken Hill commenced in 1967. A deterioration in metallurgical performance at each concentrator occurred as a result, with increased loss of lead and zinc to residues. Investigations to determine the reasons for this problem and methods to counteract it have been undertaken. This paper outlines the effects of cement on lead-zinc beneficiation at Broken Hill and presents an interim report on attempts to overcome the metallurgical deterioration.

WHAT information do you have on precision investment casting? Please send me all available information on the removal of paraffin from oil wells and pipe lines. How can I find out how to remove magnesium oxide from lime? I want a good book on the pickling of steel. Can liquid oxygen be used as an explosive in a mine? Where can I get a bibliography on the plasticity of metals? These questions, selected from the scores of questions asked the Engineering Societies Library staff every day, indicate some of the diversity of the requests received. The samples chosen relate to interests of AIME members but the questions that come to the Library by mail, telephone, telegraph, and in person cover all fields of engineering, science, and technology. Some questions can be answered quickly; others require extensive searching. Those that can be answered in a few minutes or ten, twenty, or even thirty minutes are usually done without charge. For the more difficult questions a charge is made. In this way those requiring considerable service pay for it and the Library finds it possible to serve more persons.

IT has been shown1,3 that many observed phenomena related to annealing textures in f.c.c. metals can be adequately accounted for, at least in a qualitative way, by considering the orientation dependence of the boundary mobility, without any hypotheses concerning preferred orientation of nuclei. It was noted1 that this approach is particularly successful in the common cases of primary recrystallization in highly cold-worked polycrys-talline metals, where nuclei occur in great abundance, and that in the other extreme case, where the number of nuclei is very limited, or even only a single crystal is grown, the orientation dependence of boundary mobility has only a small effect, or none at all, on the orientations resulting from annealing. Recently Dunn described examples3-6 where observed secondary recrystallization textures apparently cannot be accounted for on the basis of oriented growth alone, but also require oriented nuclei, or at least the absence of nuclei in certain orientation ranges. In general, the great difficulty in correlating the preferred orientation of recrystallized grains with that of nuclei is inherent in the fact that nuclei are by nature very small, and that they are usually identifiable as "nuclei" only after growth, i.e., after they have already been subject to growth selectivity. An investigation was carried out by Liebmann and Lücke,' and also a very similar one by Graham and Cahn,' to obtain quantitative information on the orientation depend- ence of boundary migration rates in the recrystallization of slightly deformed aluminum single-crystal rods or plates, in which artificially nucleated recrystallized grains of predetermined orientation were grown. Liebmann and Lücke foupd maximum boundary mobility for boundaries across which the misorientation corresponded to a rotation of 40 deg around a common [Ill] axis, in accordance with earlier conclusions.9,1 Also, they confirmed that such an orientation relationship predominates among crystals growing into slightly extended single crystals from presumably random artificial nuclei. On the other hand, Graham and Cahn found no preferred orientation among crystals grown in a similar manner. It is not as yet known how these observations may be reconciled with each other. The view has been expressed in various papers5'10,21 that selective growth based on the orientation dependence of boundary mobility is not in itself sufficient to account for the formation of sharp re-crystallization textures, such as those often observed in highly deformed polycrystalline metals after annealing. The present work was undertaken to ascertain whether or not it is possible to obtain a sharp re-crystallization texture in a case where random nuclei are assuredly present in large numbers. It was previously found1' that high-purity aluminum crystals rolled 80 pct on the (110) plane in the [1T2] direction, when suitable precautions are taken, may be annealed for periods of about 1000 sec at 350°C without recrystallization. It was also found that the reluctance to recrystallize in this case is due to the scarcity of material in sufficiently deviating orientations to serve as nuclei. By using such a matrix,

Introduction The Harzwasserwerke, a public body of the Federal State of Lower Saxony, supplies drinking water to an area bordered by Braunschweig, Bremen, the Northern and the Western edges of the Harz-Mountains. From the very beginning in 1928, the Harzwasserwerke have been systematically constructing reservoirs in the western Harz which have the function of collecting and storing the frequently occuring flood waters as well as providing drinking water. The Grane-Reservoir with a capacity of 45 Million cu.m., the last of the big reservoirs, was built in 1968-1970. A system of connecting tunnels effectively enlarges the natural catchment area of this reservoir and the surplus waters of the Oker and Radau valleys - where floods occur particularly during the spring - are being conducted to the reservoir. By building the 4.800 m long "Radau-Tunnel", the waters of the Radau valley will now also be used more efficiently and its surplus waters will pass to the Grane Reservoir via this new tunnel and the Oker-Grane-Tunnel which was finished in 1970. The Project The Radaustollen has been planned and put out to tender by the Harzwasserwerke as a conventional "Freispiegelstollen". The horseshoe profile has a cross-section of 8 m2. Lining was required only in disturbed rock areas; lining of the whole tunnel was not necessary. The gradient of the tunnel is 4 % 0 rising = 25 m over the total length of 4.800 m.

On blowing nickel matte in a converter without quartz, first the oxidation of metallic iron and a part of FeS occurs without evolving sulfur dioxide, the formed FeO dissolves in a sulphide smelt and form a homogeneous oxysulphide smelt. On further increasing the FeO content, the oxysulphide separates into 2 layers. Based on the laboratory investigation of FeO-(FeS+Fe°) - (Ni3S2+Ni°) ternary phase diagram we have identified the separation region at 1250°C. The boundaries of the separation region have the form of an arc and the composition of the separated oxysulphide layers is defined by the canodes. In the nickel or copper-nickel matte - silicacalcium oxide slag system at 1250°C three layers, namely sulphide, oxysulphide, and slag may be formed. A high slag basicity due to the presence of CaO can serve to enhance the activity of FeO; a low nickel content in the matte corresponds to a high concentration of FeS therein; FeO from slag and FeS from the matte form a homogeneous FeO-FeS solution, i.e. an oxysulphide layer. The investigation on the "Camebaks" apparatus and by the nuclear gamma-ray resonance spectroscopy method of the phase composition in a slowly cooled oxysulphide layer has shown the presence of four phases: wustite, troilite, ferronickel grains, and calcium oxide-silica inclusions. Knowledge of regularities in the oxysulphides formation makes it possible to use them in pyrometallurgy of nickel and cobalt or preventing their formation.

Most of what has been written during the past few years on marine mineral resources has emphasized the vast potential of the ocean, and its floor, as a source of the vital mineral raw materials upon which our modern technological society depends. Computations have been made to demonstrate that the sea contains sufficient minerals to support any reasonable world population indefinitely. The importance of these resources from the standpoint of strengthening the national mineral resource base has been pointed out. And though the information upon which these conclusions are based is sketchy, essentially qualitative, and often conflicting, there can be no doubt that the mineral potential of the sea is tremendous and that there are compelling reasons for working toward its exploitation. Unfortunately, there has been little emphasis on the problems that must be overcome, from the perspective of the economics of mineral production. Some of these problems have been noted, and some authors have appraised them realistically. However, many proposed solutions have been more romantic than practical, from the standpoint of both technology and economics. As a result the general impression has been given, particularly to those uninitiated in the realities of mineral production, that the mineral wealth of the sea is there for the taking-requiring only a good modicum of courage and technologic innovation to place it within easy grasp. But developing the capability necessary for substantial, profitable production of sea bottom minerals will be far from easy. It will be accomplished much more quickly if the problems are faced squarely, defined properly, and attacked in an orderly, logical sequence. While this approach may lack glamour, it offers the highest probability for success.

Basic procedures in the mining industry have changed only slightly over the centuries since metals and fossil fuels became an essential part of man's economic and cultural life. Mining techniques of the 20th century bear a close resemblance to those of the ancients: exploration, ore breakage and removal, hoisting, and processing. The great advances, however, have been in equipment and machinery of greater size and speed which allow greater efficiency in each of these operations, with a corresponding reduction in manpower requirements. Yesteryear production was measured in pounds per man-day; today a giant and complex, but highly efficient, continuous mining machine can remove as much as eight tons of material a minute from the coal face. If our energy and metal demands of the future are to be met, and at this time it can be assumed that coal will continue to supply a significant part of the energy demand, other dramatic and spectacular technologic advances must be accomplished. Along with mechanization, however, public policy will require the industry to place greater emphasis on health and safety protection, as has been well demonstrated by recent actions of Congress. Together, fossil fuels and metals formed the basis for the industrial revolution-coal to develop power and metals to transform power into useful energy. Strangely enough, however, the mining industry the world over has lagged behind the continuous social changes brought on by the industrial revolution, such as preventive health and industrial hygiene services, and other programs directed to the well-being of the worker. In some countries this resistance, to change may have led in part to the nationalization of the coal industry. Whether this disinclination to social change in the industry of the United States reflects managerial attitudes, inept labor leadership, government neglect, or economic relationship would be the subject of an interesting study. Doubtless the mores of miners and their resistance to change, as well as their geographic isolation from other industrial groups, may have had a strong influence on these factors. In every major coal mining country the accident rate in the coal industry is substantially higher than other industrial groups, and the cost of pneumoconiosis compensation in some countries is greater than the combined costs for all other occupational diseases from all other industries. The high social cost of occupational accidents and diseases may have been a factor in the closing of the industry in at least two countries. Despite diminishing manpower needs, the industry is faced with critical manpower shortages. Miners once reared their sons to be miners; now it appears that the opposite is true. Introductory The steady advance in the price of lead and zinc in the metal markets of the world during the past few years has resulted in an active search for new deposits of these metals, and to the re-examination of known properties that are now idle. There are a number of deposits of these metals in eastern Canada, the best known of which are the Tetreault mine at Notre Dame des Anges, Que.; the Reader mine on Calumet island, Que.; the Stirling property in Cape Breton, and the Federal mine in Gaspe district, Que. . The author has run concentration tests on the ores from the first three mentioned properties. The ores from Notre Dame des Anges and Calumet island presented problems in concentration which were not successfully solved until the past year. Although considerable experimental work has been done by the Ore Testing Laboratories on the ore from the Stirling mine we have not been successful in developing a satisfactory method of treatment. Character and Types of Ores Metallurgically the lead-zinc ores of eastern Canada may be classified into three distinct types as follows: First: - Ore in which the sulphide minerals are fairly coarsely crystalline and can be freed by crushing to 40 or 60 mesh. The zinc blend has a high iron content (not marmatite) and gives a dark brown colour on grinding. The ores of Notre Dame des Anges and Calumet island, Que., may be cited as examples.

The TAG and Broken Spur hydrothermal mounds are located on the Mid Atlantic Ridge (MAR) at 260N and 290N (respectively). Both were initially discovered by exploratory work from surface vessels and both have since been investigated by submersibles. The discovery of TAG resulted from a NOAA Trans-Atlantic Geotraverse (Rona et al. 1975) which fortuitously sampled low temperature materials on the east wall of the MAR rift valley and follow up operations (Rona et al. 1986) located the high temperature (365°C) mound some 5km to the west. In 1994, ODP deep sea drilling (Leg 158) at over 3,500 metres of water recovered core to a depth of 150 m below surface (Herzig et al. 1998) and for the first time allowed a geological interpretation of an active mound. The Broken Spur mound was accidentally discovered in 1993 when sulphide fragments were observed on a deep-sea towed camera system (Murton 1993). Later that year, exploratory submersible dives by Alvin located the hydrothermal field and the area was again explored by submersible in 1994 and 1997. Despite the amount of work carried out, our geological understanding of the MAR mounds is limited. Much effort has gone into measuring fluid chemistry whilst practical difficulties have inhibited good geological mapping of the sulphide areas. It is clear from both TAG and Broken Spur that the mounds are not necessarily located in the areas of highest heat potential. Indeed, TAG is some 2 km from the rift valley axis and has been operational for several tens of thousands of years. Hence, heat availability is not a major consideration and the most obvious control is a structural one. Mapping on Broken Spur indicates a series of isolated vent-sulphide areas, concentrated around a minor graben. Their distribution, size and nature all indicate that they are residual parts of a much larger sulphide body which was at least the size of the present TAG field. The evidence is for a cyclical pattern of mound growth -mass wasting? rejuvenation and the Broken Spur mound appears to be in the rejuvenation stage of the cycle. Mound cyclicity must be related to the supply of hot water which itself is a function of the connectivity of fracture systems. Hence, we return to the theme that the major controls in mound development are structural ones.
